Y’know, one of the things this fandom seemed to be divided into two parts is about Frontier and Takuya’s “Dark Evolution” in the story. Some pointed it was “Vritramon rampaging phase” in the story, and some would consider “Takuya reverting into Flamon” as the dark evolution of this series.
First, what are the characteristics of Dark Evolution, according to the older three series + Savers? Mixing strong negative emotions and forcing your digimon to evolve. All cases of Dark Evolution before and after Frontier were like this. (I know, the OG Taichi was mostly by being a reckless idiot, but i like to think the novel version explained something a little more about this event)
Character has strong negative feelings and then forces their or someone else’s digimon to dark evolve into a mindless beast. – That’s how things worked in Adv’99, 02, Tamers and Savers.
(you may notice that instead of Daisuke dark evolving his partner, it’s Ken who forces a dark evolution on Taichi’s partner. Which implies yeah anyone could do that. Funny enough, Ken also fits the criteria established in those series: He is a self-absorbed and arrogant kid, so those emotions are mixed in the mix and this is why he evolves Agumon into SkullGreymon first. He only manages to get MetalGreymon virus after he cheats with his Evil/Dark Spiral. Meanwhile Daisuke lacks malice, lacks negative feelings. So he’s just a dumbass in ep 22 getting into trouble in the process.)
However, Ghost Game brought a new view of this concept by introducing GulusGammamon. As you can see, Gulus is a dark evolution (somehow) and it differs from every mindless-beast-on-rampage case we watched until now. But before going into GG take on it, I’d like to talk about the peculiar case in Adventure’s reboot series (aka Psi, or Adv:2020) first:
So, one of the things we saw in the episode from the reboot is that Taichi was getting consumed by the dark miasma around the place. We never had something like this before as well – this series was trying to “corrupt” Taichi too. The last time we saw a “tamer” corruption was on a Drama CD which was more a very weird and for fun story (this was done before the Drama CDs for digimon started to get serious stories) than something to take seriously. Anyway, the reboot was trying to corrupt Taichi first. Second is… Taichi dies for a moment which triggers Agumon’s dark evolution based on Agumon’s strong feelings (and the dark miasma, probably). This is going to be reused in Ghost Game, actually.
Now, back to Ghost Game!! Fun facts for you: Gulus is the only Gamma-form to not have a ring on his wrist/paw. Also, Gulus does not need Hiro to evolve either! But it was triggered by Gammamon’s strong feelings at first – when Bokomon died in front of him. Other cases were probably for survival in a life-or-death scenario for him or any of the trio. Gulus’ has another speech pattern from the other Gammamon forms, and the most important detail is he’s totally sentient. Gulus is more like another personality to Gammamon than being a feral beast in rampage.
But what can Ghost Game help us to decide which “dark evolution” scenario counts for Takuya/Frontier?
First of all, if we ignore Takuya for a moment, Frontier already has a “dark evolution” character – Kimura Kouichi. Duskmon and Velgmon are evil forms, and they’re purified into Loweemon and KaiserLeomon later. And heck, Kouichi himself is the “Warrior of Darkness” c’mon guys!!
BUT, Kouichi’s role is most suitable for the “redeemed villain” category. So yeah, which of Takuya’s cases suit the dark evolution criteria?
I’d like to reveal that, maybe, Frontier was ahead of its time. Because now that we got Ghost Game to break the norm and show us a new approach from this concept, it can help us here to notice Flamon was sort of a dark evolution for Takuya.
Frontier already makes clear that the Beast spirit forms cannot be controlled that easily, and I’ll shamelessly plug Shiha’s meta about everyone’s cases here in case we start the discussion about Izumi again.
So if we consider Vritramon the “dark evolution case”, you could say most of the kids in Frontier had it too. Which is odd, right?
But, if you consider Flamon an unusual dark evolution case, one like Gulus is now, it makes some sense. Dark evolution in the Digimon franchise is sort of “punishment” for not raising your digimon correctly – It’s a challenge, and you have to beat this obstacle to gain the new power/form to proceed. Dark evolution does not always mean “evil form” as well, just, as Gennai puts it in the end of Adventure, “a form not suitable for certain occasions” – So this concludes my thesis that Frontier started the unusual dark evolution forms instead.
Thank y’all for reading~

Given how your ideal Myers is based on the H20 version, have you looked up the tie in comics? I'm not saying you're depiction is wrong, but in those he's worse than ever. He does stuff like spiking kids' candy with razor blades, killing an entire family, torturing Loomis' friend to death, cutting out a man's tongue, and burying a girl alive. You can argue it's non canon, but that is still inexcusably evil. Mike may not be as bad as some other killers, but he's still capable of heinous shit.
I really don’t know why you keep asking me this kind of thing. My answer isn’t going to change. If it’s non-canon, why would it matter if it’s inexcusably evil? It wouldn’t apply to the canon character if it’s not canon. One version of him being capable of heinous actions, doesn’t mean they all are. Every canon version of The Joker is The Joker, but The Killing Joke’s universe’s Joker is unrecognizably a different character than Telltale Batman’s Joker. That’s just how media with alternate versions of characters work. I know he does inexcusably evil things in many Halloween timelines. But even when it comes to canon, being canon in one timeline, is not canon in every timeline. Even officially licensed tie-ins aren’t often the exact same timeline. IE Terminator’s novelization, but several parts canonically cannot happen in the timeline of the film, despite it being generally faithful, because they directly contradict time and actions that happen on-screen. Ergo, the novelization and the movie are parallel, but still separate timelines. What is true of Halloween Kills Michael, is not true of comic Michael, is not true of DbD Michael, is not true of H20 Michael. What one does doesn’t affect my perception of other versions, canonically separated, of the same character.
Even when it comes to closer media, like comics, where incredibly different takes on characters are ‘canon’ at the same time, it is and always has been commonly accepted and expected fandom rhetoric, that it’s impossible to judge a character for every single thing they’ve ever been written to do, especially since so many versions of them by hundreds of different writers, contradict each other. And it’s impossible for basically everyone to consume all the content anyway. So some people will like characters someone else despises, and often not because they’re wildly different types of fans, but because they read wildly different versions of the character first, and that became true canon to them. It’s just kind of how it has to work. I will forever despise Wolverine, because I read classic X-Men and he was a shithead and he murdered one of my favorites in cold blood for no reason, and had the gall to be sanctimonious about it. But I don’t expect someone whose mental version of Logan is contemporary Logan, or the films, or X-Men Evo, to feel the same as me.
That logic applies infinitely more to things like Halloween, where there are like 10 canonically acknowledged timelines going. Would I hate OG Star Trek Uhura if the version of her in the JJ Abrams movie did something awful? No. It’s not the same person. Does Tom Holland Spidey affect how I feel about Toby Maguire? It doesn’t matter if some versions of him are awful, and despicable, when it comes to me liking or sympathizing with another. If you were introduced to him in a way that made you hate not just that one, but every version, and will always feel so, or even if it wasn’t a different Michael, but you have a personal reason? —I was buddies with someone who hated him forever because of their own brother, and personal experience—that’s valid. Feel free to never change. But it doesn’t make my interpretation wrong. Mine isn’t. And I don’t need to change mine either.
One of the most important things to remember both in fandom and film criticism, is it’s entirely possible for multiple people with opposing views to both be right (or wrong) simultaneously. What is harmful genuinely to some heals others. Mulholland Drive is both homophobic for demonizing its Lesbian’s love and burying your gays like 4 times, and it has value in queer cinema for being a film about Lesbians center stage that has mattered to some. Even if you don’t like that I feel how I do, because you feel very different, it doesn’t make me wrong. Please stop messaging me to try and get me to change my mind; it both is never going to happen, and genuinely objectively doesn’t need to. And you don’t need it to. You don’t have to care at all what I think or how I feel about this if you don’t want to. I have no power over how you need to think or feel about him yourself. Only over myself and what I think and care for and will create.

I’ve been consuming an honestly problematic amount of isekai webtoons/manhwa lately, specifically the shoujo pseudo-medieval-fantasy-europe with lords and ladies and a legendary swordsman ML who’s the disgraced Archduke of the barren North kind, and the implications of the transmigration trope has been killing me.
A lot of the time, the MC’s life before getting trucked is hand-waved away. Their past doesn’t really come up much in the story unless its to show a few panels of their tragic backstory, or to justify a skill that the plot needs. Which isn’t a flaw, because these types of stories are supposed to be escapist fantasies. We’re here for romance and simpery. But a genre deconstruction would be great. Imagine a transmigration story exploring how dysphoric ending up in a new body would be. Imagine the grief of having your life ripped away from you— no more modern conveniences, no more tasting your favorite food, no more seeing the people you treasure. Who’s going to take care of your dog??? And— Imagine how horrific it would be to have a loved one’s body be hijacked by a complete stranger.
Man— the last one has so much room for inspiration. What if the person you transmigrated into had people who cared about them? How would they feel about the transmigrator? Would they resent them? Pity them? And since a lot of the time, people are transmigrated into heinous villainesses, imagine how complicated the people that the og villainess harassed would feel. The person who was so horrible to you is now replaced by a confused, and, honestly, pitiful stranger. Where’s all your hate and ire supposed to go?
Or, to get even more meta, what if someone is isekai’d into a transmigration novel? Imagine the identity crisis that the transmigrator would go through with the knowledge that they’re a fictional character as well! They’re so glad to finally be able to talk to someone from their world, only to find out that they’re the bland female lead of a mediocre transmigration novel. Not even a good one— nope, people online trash on her for having no braincells and following the original novel lmao. She finds out that there are thousands screaming at her for trying to set up the OG FL and ML. Comedy. Or angst critiquing transmigration audiences. Flip a coin.
The female lead starts to notice how blurry their memories of their past life are; how quickly and adeptly they adapted into living as a noble lady im pseudo-medieval-europe, how they’d always stumble into the main plot despite doing everything they can to live a quiet life. The mindfuckery. The gut-wrenching loss of agency. They were already despairing over not being able to follow the original plot. What are they going to do now?
“Is that why I keep tripping into the main protagonists?!!”

HBD JUNGHYEOK-AHH !!!
yu junghyeok probably is the most complex and yet the most straightforward character i’ve liked in recent years (same with dokja, it’s just JH is my saioshi/choiae haha)
[ quite long personal takes on JH-DJ ] [ spoiler warning ]
YJH’s fate made him repeat life many times; his emotions, as a man, protagonist, character, and regressor = astronomical level of distress
seeking life’s purpose / never give up / made same mistakes / be a good dad-lover / be a cruel king / follow the rice path (81 it’s about u) / sacrifice all / sacrifice nothing ... Yu Junghyeok had tried all method of living, yet it never satisfy him.
he wanted to confront his creator and get clear answer from god
(god: it’s for character development and for reader’s entertainment)
my understanding of JH: “who cares about emotions when from day one to your last breath, your story has been destined to be tragedy” that also applies to DJ because i personally think, they’re mirror each other.
I was fine with ch 516, Dokja’s final decision is so Kim Dokja and i respect him for any path he choose. He said to himself in ch 370 “I had never learned to be cowardly. No, I was taught to pay the price for the things I’ve done“. His ending fit him and i like such Kim Dokja.
But I CRIED A LOT AT THE FIRST CHAPTER FROM WORLD OF ZERO
I don’t know what kind of story, about YJH, that KDJ has been read for decade.
And World of zero is a new story both KDJ and I, as reader, never know.
Reader only get KDJ’s very own subjective view, about YJH, since very beginning. We got fan report of WoS main character from a long time reader’s perspective.
World of zero, the epilog KDJ has been searching, is a story that explain the reason of YJH’s suffering. From 1 to 1864, YJH tried countless different routes ... but this fool didn’t know he’s been chasing his own tail for ever. It’s carbon copy of KDJ’s brand “I was taught to pay the price for the things I’ve done“. Bro. 0th YJH is the OG.
---
KDJ dislike YJH at the early part of the novel. He had read all the good and bad decisions YJH made in all regression turn; and got into WoS world with his 10 years memories of reading it. He really thought 3rd YJH is stupid lol.
And that mirror concept, KDJ projecting YJH as himself who live a life with better options to choose. YJH had option to have companions, friends, lover, family ALL THE THINGS KDJ BEEN YEARNING since his early life THIS STUPID SUNFISH CHOOSE TO BE ALONE INSTEAD LMAO SIR WANNA TRADE LIFE WITH MINE?
KDJ disliked 3rd YJH, he liked 999th --he liked JH who stand up for his companion; and his narration lead us reader to think that 1864th/3rd is bad person, while 999th, his personal favorite, is great YJH. KDJ’s one of favorite movie is Gladiator, we can probably guess what value he hold in consuming media/story.
0th JH and kkoma are my top JH btw, 1864th/3rd = 999th = 1863rd (this is KDJ’s pet, right? i also prefer pet over man) second, and SP (i’m not sure i understand SP, i probably mixed my perception of him with all YJH).
SP to me is embodiment of regrets that pilled up every time JH picked wrong route. He can’t go back, but there’s no meaning to go forward; so he quit the system altogether. But just when he is no longer part of it, his raison d’etre finally appear in the story. YET ANOTHER REGRET WTHELL SP GOT ALL RIGHTS TO SEND COMPLAINTS TO THE AUTHOR.
oh by stating i have ranked my favorite JH, i did the same with dokja .. is this .. also moebius loop between reader and reader as story re-teller??
side note: JH got all things happen on secondary creation (fanart) as canon wow, genderbend / kkoma / be a pet / disciple / be a lover / is both in BxB and BxG pair / also the final boss / KIM DOKJA IS YUMEDANSHI LIVING HIS Y/N LIFE
extra: i always feel like i left dokja in shadow whenever i talk about junghyeok hmmm very biased indeed, i spent 400 chapters studying him but maybe i need another hundreds. My KDJ’s image mostly came from the early part of the novel, I like that KDJ the most. “Why would you fear of losing, when you have nothing to begin with?” emphasized by god themselves (author) near last chapter.
To someone who even lost the traces of his loss, no such thing as ‘loss’ existed.
ch. 536
For someone who is unfamiliar with genuine happiness / companionship / family, and life-time believer that he’s always alone; saying ily or excessive affection would have negative result imo. He (my version of KDJ) is the type who would grow attachment if you give him enough space to breath. Just never let him wander too far. Accompany him but don’t tie him too tightly. Cute.
I noticed i treat YJH like how parents treat a daughter and KDJ is the son hahaha

Novaturient
To heck with it, I'm going to give a in-a-nut-shell explanation of the stories I'm writing. I do have more in-depth versions in my story collection once I update it all and put it out again. But I have drawings I want to post and I kind of want to explain who the characters are before I do. So, I have a six part series I've been working on at random, on-and-off since some point in 2019. (Some of you will probably know, and remember, OUL fairly well.) The names have been questioned and moved about a few times but I think it's all finally been settled. The series has been dubbed, "Novaturient" Meaning: (All meanings copied from google, thanks google!) "Novaturient is desiring changes or alterations, usually in regards to one's life, behavior, or situation. The origin of novaturient comes from the Latin novāre (make new)" (Some of these will be familiar to many who were on MBM back in 2019 especially.) Also, there is mentions of black magic, and falling society below. In the actual stories there are many heavy-topics covered. I will not mention them here because it is a lot to tag. (And those aspects aren't even talked about here because it's just a rough, nut-shell explanation of the stories.)
So, without further-ado, I bring you to the first story. "Liberosis" meaning: "Liberosis is a longing for liberty, an ache to let things go. A recent addition, wytai, is an acronym for “When You Think About It,” and means the sudden realization of how absurd some aspect of modern life is." The story of a man has too much empathy to the point it brings him real physical pain seeing others unhappy. The idea that the world will always move on weather or not people are ready hurt him dearly. He wound up getting into black magic in an attempt to make his dreams come true. The dream of a "vacation" world where people could go to process the pain the world has forced them through. He summoned a "demon", who made the world he dreamed for. But, the man was so happy, he never checked the "terms and conditions." The world built on deceit, feeding off of pain, it was doomed to fall. And, any "OG's" way back from MBM (and even Quotev) will remember the early pitch that was "Klexos" Meaning: "There are ways of thinking about the past that aren't just nostalgia or regret. A kind of questioning that enriches an experience after the fact." The story of a very ill person exploring the house their parent forced them to live in with who was a practical stranger, years later. After getting a terminal diagnosis, and a mystery letter appearing on their hospital night-stand, with nothing but a key and address enclosed. Curiosity consumed them and they went to the house. Slowly exploring and slowly recalling their childhood, and finding out just how much they were cared for by someone they barely knew or remembered. All while also finding a way inside the empath-man's world. And then that brings us to the original story that made me want to make this a visual novel/kinetic novel series. "Monachopsis" Meaning: "The subtle but persistent feeling of being out of place, as maladapted to your surroundings as a seal on a beach—lumbering, clumsy, easily distracted, huddled in the company of other misfits, unable to recognize the ambient roar of your intended habitat, in which you’d be fluidly, brilliantly, effortlessly at home." Which is the story of a person grieving over the loss of someone close. And finding their way inside the empath-man's world as well. Getting the full experience, of slowed time, and easy life. Made perfect for the real would to melt away from one's mind. But, this person only has a rough estimate of two weeks to leave the world. As for, to enter the world, one must be in a coma. And without life support, one doesn't have long to wake up. They must recruit the help of one of the "non-human-demon-aliens" made specially to help others leave in order to go back home. Which brings us to the next, very-connected-to-Monachopsis, story. "Lachesism" Meaning: "The desire to be struck by disaster — to survive a plane crash, or to lose everything in a fire." Which in this story a person falls through a mirror within the house they recently moved into. Finding a "glitch entrance" to the empath-man's world. where they find the world slowly crumbling. The person then speaks with all they can find within the world, slowly understanding the problems it is facing. As well as why so many are now trapped there in a special-man-made-purgatory. And why they went into the world to begin with. Which brings us to the last story, "Exulansis" Meaning: "The tendency to give up trying to talk about an experience because people are unable to relate to it-whether through envy or pity or simple foreignness- which allows it to drift away from the rest of your life story." Which in this story, a person gets a letter telling them they were mentioned in a will, by someone they don't know. And that the deceased person left their house and whole estate to this person. Out of curiosity, they go to the house. Only to find many oddities, some which scare the person so bad into leaving and never coming back for long periods of time. But the hunger of confusion and wanting an answer always made the person return. The person soon finds missing
person notes, and many other alarming things. Showing them of "another world". After finding many more things, they come across a robot, who helps them break-through the glitched entrance of the empath-man's world. To find the world in a second-to-final stage before complete corruption and failure. Seeing the sky grow darker, and the inhabitance doing their best to prepare for the worst. Which then brings us to the final story, which actually wasn't meant to be connected at all to this series. OUL, or, "Out under the lights." Being it's code name, real name being, "Agathokakological" Meaning: "Composed of both good and evil." A story of a world trying to rebound from an eternal eclipse, all while having the life literally squeezed from it by a power-hungry corporation, who doesn't tolerate any form of competition. They found a way to make light from a water dwelling insect. A dearly needed bug for the ecosystem of the world. A young inventor builds a light that doesn't need a creature to work. She tries her best to leave the city where the corporations power is strongest in hopes to find others willing to support and help her with normalizing her creation, hoping to save what's left of the world the best she can. All while meeting others, all who have many problems, ideas, and beliefs of their own. Thank-you so, so much for reading!! And I hope you have a wonderful day!

Hi!!first of all, i love your blog so much. How was your waiting time for tlj? Im a baby reylo and idk how im gonna make it till 2019 [srry english isnt my first language]
You’re doing great anon!! Don’t worry about your english :P
It was pretty hard and it was definitely the most hard for me this summer of 2017 before a lot of new content and information had come out.
The *best* way to keep through the wait is
don’t get discouraged!! Sometimes reylo won’t seem like it’s going to happen, sometimes antis will be particularly mean and active and reylos are inactive. but don’t get discouraged! We went through a lot of ups and downs from 2015 to 2017 and sometimes it was really dark. I mean REALLY dark. People were like “reylo has a 10% chance of being canon” and we were being shit on left and right. People lost friends. But we pulled through! Don’t lose hope!
Follow a BUNCH of reylos!! Follow as many reylos as possible!! There will always be funny reylo posts, there will always be art, there will always be fic recs (and you have 2 years of art, recs, and meta to catch up on!!)
Read, consume, and enjoy! You have the novelization to look forward too, you have bits and pieces that we’ll learn over the next two years, press sightings, blah blah, there’s stuff to look forward too!
If you feel your excitement waning, it’s okay. I know a lot of reylos who are now ex-reylos. They’ll always be welcome here, but they moved on to different fandoms and that’s okay! They will always be welcome and if you feel the need to move on it’s fine. It happens. You won’t always be the same person. I know a lot of people who came back for TLJ and that’s okay too!
Join a chat group and try to stay active with it. I was in a few (but i’m not sure i’m really welcome it’s kind of complicated) and it was so much fun! You make a lot of friends and you get a lot of jokes. Nearly all my mutuals in reylo are from chats! Just talk to people, a lot of people have their own headcanons and theories that are fascinating. I LOVE IT when people send me asks or IMs (messages) and talk to me about their random theories. I’m not alone in this. If you’re mutuals (or if you’re not) and you think someone might like something, take a risk, talk to them. The worst that can happen is they ignore you.
Read the TFA novelization, read @ohtze ‘s Death and the Maiden meta (it’s really good), read some older fics (i’m a little behind on this one but yeah), look at classic og art blogs like @choriquesopicante @solarfugue @elithien and more (but i can’t think of more...)
Join the conversation, now that reylo is popular you might not get 500 followers immediately (when i started out there was literally about 100 of us so everyone followed everyone), but it’s okay! Everyone can make jokes and everyone can join in. Draw art, make a stupid joke, do dumb things! (I made a “russian lady” post which was hilarious to me and 4 other people). Just join in the part. It’ll be fun, even if you aren’t getting thousands of notes, trust me!!

A Guide to Genetic-Testing Kits
Speculative but Promising
Toggle description
There’s momentum behind this concept, though it needs more research to elucidate exactly what’s at work.
Curious about genetic testing, we explored the options: kits that could reveal something about the health of your microbiome, which foods you’re sensitive to, how your body metabolizes certain nutrients. Tests that recommend certain strains of cannabis and beauty routines based on your DNA. And even a test that identifies dogs by their shit. But first, a little bit of background on genetic testing; if you already know this world well, you can skip down for our highlights.
It started in 2000 with a novel way to learn about your ancestry. A simple blood test allowed companies like Family Tree to send DNA data directly to consumers, tracing their lineage back to great-great-grandparents. In 2007, 23andMe revolutionized direct-to-consumer testing with the saliva test, which made it simpler (you spit and send in your sample). And 23andMe created autosomal testing that could be used by both men and women to determine their ancestral lines up to five generations back and break down their ethnic makeup by percentage points. This opened the door for the technology most DNA-testing companies use today.
Soon, a lot of genetic-testing websites cropped up with their own spin on your DNA’s story. It’s estimated that genealogical-testing companies have around 26 million DNA profiles. And because of companies like GEDmatch, which have aggregated test results from multiple websites, it’s possible that most people’s DNA can be identified—even if they’ve never done one of these tests themselves or uploaded their own DNA. Forensic scientists have partnered with some of these sites to solve crimes (the Golden State Killer was identified from his distant relatives’ DNA).
Genetic testing and these companies raise serious ethical and privacy concerns. Given this, why might a person choose to submit their DNA? Besides learning you’re not as Irish as you thought, is there a reason for the average individual to be interested in personalized genetic testing?
New research has focused on single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and what they can tell us about our health. SNPs are the most common type of genetic variation among humans and occur normally throughout our DNA. Each person has between 4 and 5 million unique SNPs in their genome. These SNPs act as biological markers and determine various aspects of our health.
In the 1990s, an SNP that prevents normal blood clotting was identified in the gene called Factor V. Scientists found that patients with deep vein thrombosis often had this particular SNP. Since this breakthrough, the medical community has been able to use genetic testing to identify risk for over 2,000 diseases by determining whether people are carriers of certain genes. Newborns are screened to help with early diagnosis. And we’ve learned more about how drugs are processed based on a person’s genome through pharmacogenetic testing.
Because genetic tests can outline your SNPs, the real promise of the test results is that they could empower people to optimize their lifestyle based on their individual genome. This is the field of nutrigenomics: It tries to tell you how your genome interacts with nutrients on a molecular level—and how different foods will affect you.
For example, if you have a certain SNP, you may be someone who can’t convert beta-carotene into vitamin A efficiently. So a nutrition-testing kit might suggest that you supplement or eat more vitamin-A-rich foods, like sweet potatoes. And a recent systematic review found that genetic-testing kits that provided lifestyle recommendations led to positive lifestyle changes, especially related to nutrition.
Do these kits tell you the whole story of your health? Well…they can give you insight into how certain genes are related to nutritional outcomes (like how well your body converts an antioxidant you eat into a vitamin you need). But only blood work can detect whether you’re deficient in a nutrient. And the story of one SNP is not the story of how your entire genome interacts with nutrients. When it comes to determining which diet is best for you, genetic tests aren’t totally there yet. But what they can do is help create and reinforce healthy lifestyle choices.
And in the future, maybe they’ll help with much more. Nutrigenomics established itself as a field in the past decade, and other industries, like cannabis and beauty, are following it into the DNA-testing space. Which means we could see some really interesting research in the next five, ten, twenty years.
But back to right now. If you’re ready for testing: See our guide below to get a sense of what’s out there. When selecting a kit, you want to thoroughly vet the company for its scientific accuracy and how it will use your data, to be sure that you’re cool with it on both counts. The most rigorously researched companies will provide the actual studies to back up the recommendations they give you. Be aware that the information a company retrieves based on your DNA may not belong to you and may be sold to other companies; read through the privacy policy to make sure your information is safe to your satisfaction. Also, note that not all of these tests are covered by insurance yet. Many are likely to be covered down the road as the cost of testing begins to decrease and personalized direct-to-consumer medicine becomes more mainstream.
Medical-Testing Kits
Tumblr media
23andMe
The OG genealogy company that paved the way for today’s autosomal testing and saliva swabs is also the only ancestry company that offers health data; the FDA just cleared 23andMe to test for two breast cancer genes and give information on prostate cancer risk.
Tumblr media
EverlyWell
With the Food Sensitivity test kit from EverlyWell, you can screen your body’s reactivity to ninety-six common foods with a simple finger prick. This can help you identify the foods your body has an elevated immune response to. And if you believe you have food-related symptoms (gastrointestinal pain, headaches, fatigue), you can use this information to start eliminating potential offenders from your diet. Keep in mind, this kit does not test for food allergies and can’t help diagnose celiac disease.
Tumblr media
Pathway Genomics
To reduce the trial and error that can often come with prescription medications, Pathway Genomics has developed two testing kits to analyze genetic variants that affect the way you metabolize drugs, which impacts their efficacy and potential side effects. The Mental Health DNA Insight kit analyzes your body’s response to fifty common psychiatric medications, and the Pain Medication DNA Insight kit tests your response to thirteen pain medications.
Microbiome-Testing Kits
Tumblr media
BIOHM
If you’re looking for a straightforward report card on your gut, it’s BIOHM’s Gut Test. Based on years of research by microbiome expert Mahmoud Ghannoum, PhD, BIOHM scores the diversity of your microbiome on a scale of one to ten. And then it compares your bacteria and fungi—which are commonly overlooked—to estimated healthy levels. It gives an analysis of each strain of bacteria and fungi and provides nutritional recommendations to help optimize your gut. And it also sells a collection of well-researched prebiotic and probiotic formulas.
Tumblr media
DayTwo
By combining clinical parameters with microbiome data, DayTwo uses an analytical model to predict the glycemic response to various foods for people with diabetes. This is based on how the foods are digested and absorbed. The results help people create a personalized meal plan to keep glucose levels in check. And through its mobile app, DayTwo recommends meals and snacks, gives nutritional information, and calculates a health score for each meal the user logs.
Tumblr media
Thryve
If you’ve tipped over from gut-curious to gut aficionado: Thryve’s Gut Health kit gives you a panel of your microbiome and sends you back a rating of your overall gut health with a detailed report on each microbe it has detected. It recommends foods for you based on your dominant bacteria and tells you how your microbiome relates to your health in terms of mood, digestion, skin, energy levels, and so on.
Nutrition-Testing Kits
Tumblr media
Nutrigenomix
Aptly named after the field of nutrigenomics, Nutrigenomix applied cutting-edge research on various SNPs related to nutrition and exercise to lay the groundwork for most companies in the space today. You won’t find an integrative app or a cute map of your recommended foods here. Instead, Nutrigenomix’s science-forward Nutrition and Fitness Test gives you a wide array of information related to forty-five genetic markers that affect your nutrient metabolism, cardiometabolic health, weight, lactose and gluten tolerance, eating habits, and fitness (e.g., motivation to exercise or injury vulnerability). It provides tailored recommendations with the research to back them up, whether that’s suggesting you eat more citrus fruits or suggesting you limit your iron intake to reduce your risk of liver disease, arthritis, or heart conditions.
Tumblr media
Habit
It’s the love child of genetic testing and meal-delivery services: Habit uses blood and saliva samples to determine your response to different foods, then compiles your optimal nutrient intake and recommended foods. You also get a thirty-minute session with a nutritionist through the app, followed by an option to get tailored meal plans (for an additional cost).
Tumblr media
GenoPalate
Using data from seventy-five different SNPs, GenoPalate creates a profile of how your body metabolizes different nutrients and offers suggestions to optimize your intake of carbs, protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals. It then recommends the top fruits, vegetables, herbs, meats, proteins, grains, dairy products, nuts, and oils for you. Bonus: It can run analyses on existing data that you’ve sent to 23andMe or AncestryDNA.
Niche Testing Kits
Tumblr media
CannabisDNA
Anxiety from one puff too many is a learning curve most of us could do without. By analyzing seventy of your genetic markers, CannabisDNA recommends the THC:CBD ratio and strains it thinks are right for you based on cannabinoid metabolism. It also makes suggestions for strains based on what behaviors you’re trying to avoid or attain—like if you want some extra help falling asleep or if your munchies are out of control.
Tumblr media
Orig3n
Could your genome help you hack your beauty routine? The Beauty DNA Test from Orig3n tests for parameters related to your skin’s appearance and health, signs of aging, skin elasticity, and response to sunlight to give you an actionable beauty report. For example, you might want to start taking that collagen supplement earlier than you thought.
Tumblr media
PooPrints
If you’re the leave-it-and-run type of dog owner, you might want to reconsider. For apartment buildings that use PooPrints, during an initial “doggy day,” DNA samples are collected from each dog in the complex. Then, when the building finds any rogue droppings on the property, they’ll send it off to PooPrints to determine whose pup it belongs to. And a (large) fine can follow. While this might not be a genetic test to improve your well-being, some may consider it a form of self-improvement (and here’s to a future where you can find out who took a bite out of your sandwich in the work fridge).

Working beyond nine to five and barely getting by, Melanie Thomas is eager to celebrate the impending holiday season and to toast the start of her dream marketing job over drinks with her boyfriend. Unfortunately, he has different plans - like seeing other women. Indulging in a pity party with tequila, Melanie confides in a sexy stranger at the bar. It’s almost Christmas. One night of letting go won’t hurt anything, right? Turns out, it just might, when the stranger is her new boss. Determined to succeed at her job, Melanie won’t be scared away. This is her chance, even if her hot boss has her feeling all merry and bright and wishing for a less-than-professional relationship. Matthew Ryans is burned out and on thin ice at the company he helped build, unless he gets his head back in the game. Yet, his head, both upper and lower, are quickly becoming obsessed with his new assistant. Still, he can’t seem to fully begrudge Melanie’s distracting presence and the Christmas joy she brings with it. Especially considering that her enthusiasm has him reenergized. For once, he is longing for Mondays, but with his heart and job on the line, he can’t risk blurring the lines no matter how strong the lure of holiday mistletoe is. Will their holiday passion be able to fuel mutual career success, or will it only get in their way in the New Year? Twitter⎮Facebook   Mine to Five by Tara September was such a good audio book. I really enjoyed the characters and the story. I felt like it was all very realistic as well. When Melanie finds out that her boyfriend of two years has been cheating on her, she decided to drown her sorrows in tequila. Then she wakes up in someone else's bed the next morning. To top that off, she is also running late for her first day of work at her new job. Then low and behold her drunken mistake is one of her new bosses.  I really loved the chemistry that Melanie and Matthew have. I thought they worked well together and they were good together. I found myself wanting to know more about them. I of course wanted them to be together. I do like that they both had to grow up a bit in order to figure out the other one. I though this was a super cute rom-com book. Definitely worth reading. I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Tara September. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it. with Author Tara September Waffle fries or curly fries? - Neither. I like crispy steak frites … or McDonald’s fries, I know, but they are sooo good. GIF with a hard g or soft g? - Hard, like my men, lol. Fantasy or science-fiction? Hmm both, but if pressed I’d say Sci-Fi. Love me some Star Wars. Superman or Batman? - Superman! He’s super, it’s in his name after all. This is actually a debate the hero and heroine have in my holiday office romance, Mine to Five. Text message or call? - TXT! I have a phobia about having to sort out issues over the phone with strangers. Contest a bill or having to call customer service? Ugh the worst. Twitter for fun, Facebook for business. Alice in Wonderland or Robinson Crusoe? Meh to both. But since Robinson Crusoe is technically considered the first novel ever, much is owed to Defoe for paving the way for today’s literature. Being too warm or too cold? I live in Florida for a reason. Netflix or Hulu? Netflix. I’m OG like that. I used to have their DVD rental service, lol. Work Hard or Play Hard? Play on player! Passenger or Driver? Driver, because in our family that means I have control of the radio and can play an audiobook or Yacht Rock Radio. Plus, I can never sleep in the car anyway, so I might as well drive. Amusement Park or Day at the Beach? In Florida we can do both ;) I’m a huge Disney addict. Used to work for Disney corporate out in LA. Honesty or Other’s Feelings? Other’s feelings! Movie at Home or Movie at the Theater? Theater. About two-thirds of the way back, in the center of the row. If not, I’ll wait in the lobby eating nachos and sour patch kids until the next showing. My husband meanwhile will likely have given up and will see something else solo. Oh, and I LOVE previews. If we arrive after the previews, I’ll wait for the next showing, lol. Please don't take this as offensive (im sorry if i come across that way, i hope not) but i really wouldn't take someone like Yourself to be a Fates fan. Fates and Fgo just tends to be filled with a lot of uh, Problems? For a lack of better words? The fandom and the content is just really REALLY weird to me. There's also like a ton of shows(games?), so im starting to wonder if I just started off on the wrong foot? Am i missing something?
I am a being of many interests. Lol, you’re good though. I very much get it.
Fate is...a weird mix? I don’t even think I can call myself a proper ‘Fate fan,’ because while I collect secondhand info like a lint roller takes lint, I’ve barely experienced any of even just the shows (which is an intentional choice). You are actually correct both times; it is both games and shows. And more. It started as a multi-path lite novel, which got adapted into anime, and more. There’s the big shows, which mostly connect to the original novel, plus a bunch of stories set in that expanded universe, in show game and more formats. I have no idea what you started on, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was bad, because Fate tends to be a roulette wheel. Basically, the short version is that the reason for this is Fate swaps out like their whole creative team for every show and game and thing, and every fuckin /arc/ of Fate Go, so the quality will vary from “Huh. That was...something” to “Oh my god that was a waste of so many hours wtf that was /god/awful” to “oh worm??! This is kinda fun” to “i-is this a spiritual experience?”
So they’re all kind of connected but also not really? I can’t think of a good thing to liken it to, because it’s a weird way to do something, but even many stories with the exact same characters are written or adapted by completely different teams, so they’re kind of all connected in name more than anything else? It’s very much a consume and take or leave only specifically what you want kind of thing.
I can’t speak to the fandom because I’m not really...in it? And have only ever gone into the tags for gifs. But I would not be surprised if a lot of the most vocal ones are terrifying. It seems like that’s often the case in many fandoms regrettably.
Tbh I can’t honestly speak to most Fate media. The only game I have played is Go, the little gatcha phone game. Honestly, anybody who played/plays Fate Go too and wants to roast me for it has free rein. It’s ridiculous, and goofy, and often stupid, sometimes straight up terrible, but also sometimes kind of fantastic. Florence Nightengale tried to chop off all my limbs when she met me and beat a president up to ‘fix’ him. King David pulled the sickest tactical finess in the history of warfare. The game made fun of everyone who takes shipping too seriously and roasted them all in an event which gave me great screenshots for future use:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s a super mixed bag, which is sometimes actually fantastic, and sometimes so bad that I am like “I...want to commit assault against whoever just did the art alone.” But I just kind of skip the downticks and stick around for arcs that get the good writers. It’s goofy, but some of it has made me genuinely happy, and that’s extremely valuable to me right now. (On a good arc) It’s like, the right mesh of funny and serious and goofy and low key but clever for me to get really into but in like consistently a light and non-stressful way.
The only anime I have actually watched is Unlimited Blade Works, which I thought was phenomenal and it wrecked me as a human being. It’s also very beautiful and has some of the best animated fight scenes in anything I have seen ever, and I would wholeheartedly recommend it. I can’t speak to any of the others. And I don’t want to watch any of the other OG paths and no one can make me. But UBW lives rent free in my soul. I mean:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you were a normal human being, you will probably watch this and go “Some of that was confusing, but it was pretty neat. 8/10 stars.” If you wanted to sincerely be a superhero as a kid or god forbid are like me and still haven’t entirely given up on that dream deep down, it’ll be a 13/10 but it will also crush your soul and leave it in little glass shards. Worth it tho. 13/10, would rewatch a 5th time.
Anyway there was your long and unnecessary breakdown of me and fate. The TLDR is I’m actually just the “I have approximate knowledge of many things” guy from Adventure Time and know very little comprehensively. Go is stupid, but the times it’s great are worth the times I want to die to me personally, as a phone game. And UBW is high art and it hurt me in a way that was worthwhile because it made me feel truly heard even if in a painful way by at least one other person. And also it’s just kind of a killer of a story.
