Jinx's Potential Pirate Problem

From what we know from this first season, the Lanes and Bilgewater seem to uneasily coexist as partners in the black market. Bilgewater Pirates try to catch any opportunity to hustle and shortend Zaunites out of their wares if they think they can get away with it. Instead of the threat to Silco coming from Noxus, the outside party agitating for Silco's overthrow, the simpler answer might be from Bilgewater.

In one of the first scenes at the last drop a pair of traders from Bilgewater are trying to cheat Huck, the glasses dude, out of their arranged deal. Vander manages to deescalate the situation with the threat of violence and offers them his pipe too (let's put a pin in that).

Then, during the arcade scene, the audience gets to see what an excellent sharpshooter Jinx is at a young age. Jinx makes all the shots not just once but several in a row alternating back and forth between targets in rapid succession. When I watched that scene, I thought how weird it is that those targets weren't painted to look like caricatures of obnoxiously wealthy Piltovans (the one civilian has isn't meant to be a target) or, at the very least, enforcers. Instead, they made a game out of shooting a class of people Vander and Zaun citizens seem to work with often. Vander had to approve of the game for it to be played by the kids, I'm sure. Vander doesn't want them to challenge Piltover's forces, but he does want to foster a healthy antagonism against Pirates.

This next one is a small thing but I found it odd that when Caitlyn made up a back story she gave her family a pirate origin. Do I think that means somehow it'll be revealed Caitlyn's family has a secret family origin where they used to Pirates. No, I think it's a cute set up for how Pirates are associated with people and objects Jinx has been taught to dislike.

Finally I want to include this concept art of Jinx that was included in the Bridging the Rift series. This outfit wasn't included in the first season. She's in a cloak decorated in waves and tentacles, imagery associated Bilgewater and its related religion. Except for the hood, it's not really Jinx's style, but she's got it on, and she got it from somewhere, so maybe this hints at Bilgewater's growing influence in the wake of Zaun's power vacuum.

Now that Silco is dead I can see Pirates from Bilgewater trying to take advantage of Zaun's supposed weakness by backing out of their previously established deals, and generally just muscling in on the Shimmer trade. I can see at least 1 or 2 chembarons accepting a Bilgewater faction taking Silco's place as long they're offered stability and a lucrative arrangement. I imagine the smarter chembarons are wary of crossing Sevika though, Bilgewater wouldn't offer independence just new masters to control Zaun.

What's something to keep in mind though is that if Finn was Bilgewater's point of contact that means the information they gathered on Silco's operation and especially on Jinx was filtered through his perspective. Sevika made it clear, Finn's an idiot who didn’t know what the hell he was talking about when he tried to disparage Silco and Jinx to her, and it got him killed.

What does it all mean? Well, it means that Bilgewater isn't operating on the right set of knowledge on how to handle Zaun, and worse, how to handle Jinx. They're going to make a big push in Zaun next season, Finn made Jinx sound more flighty and unstable than she actually is. The former is a worse mistake than the latter, so despite the 'mad dog' status Bilgewater will probably think she can either be subdued or put down easily. But just like when Vander handed those traders his pipe (a symbol of power in Zaun), they won't be able handle Zaun or Jinx, frankly the situation will be too overwhelming (there's the pin). Not only are we shown a young Jinx running bullets through pretend pirates but she readily outmaneuvers groups of enemy combatants. Zaun is an acquired taste honestly, there's a lot of moving parts constantly in flux that most people wouldn't be able to handle.

Why would Bilgewater even be on Jinx's case? Silco's dead, some assume that ends Jinx's involvement in Zaun's affairs and on to Piltover. But Jinx is technically a part of the 'old regime' and no symbols should remain of it for people to rally around, and Jinx definitely is the kind to have a cult of personality. They might want to take the heat off of Zaun as they try to gain control by getting rid of Jinx to placate Piltover. I'm not sure how successful that'd be since Piltover will be hellbent to remove all Shimmer infrastructure, the industry they want in on. Or maybe Jinx doesn't like the way Bilgewater's infiltrators are treating the last of what remains of Silco's memory, of what her and Silco cultivated together as a family. Jinx has no reason to play nice with these people and they're unprepared for what that means.

Tldr: I've been so wrapped up in the threat of Noxus, I ignored how entrenched Bilgewater Pirates are in Zaun that lays the ground for an infiltration arc in season 2. So often, whenever there's a scene that implies the presence of Bilgewater (the Pirate hub), it's overshadowed by the bigger personalities of the main cast and how they react to it.

Yandere headcannon for the Arcane ladies!

Vi is your average parenting yandere. Having grown up as a parent for her younger sister, it's only natural.

By personality Vi is a fun, caring person who will absolutely spoil you rotten. Expect to be coddled by her.

On good days she will take you out to fun little dates where she'll make you try all kinds of wonderful street food. She'll also take you to arcade and pretend to lose at the last minute just to see you smile.

On bad days though, Vi is dangerous. She has a temper that can scare even the most hardass cops. And with that muscular built with scars to show for all the fights she got into, it's best if you don't do anything that can tick her off.

Just be a nice, submissive little thing for Vi and she'll adore you. Try to resist or disobey her, and you'll know that she isn't any less crazy then her sister.

Caitlyn is the kind of yandere who wants to know everything about you. And by everything, I mean everything.

She will totally use her cop privilege to find out everything about you. You can expect her to make regular rounds around your neighborhood, all under the guise of doing 'regular' police rounds.

Eventually it won't be enough to just know everything about you from a distance. She'll find some excuse to approach you. Maybe she'll pull your car over as a cop just to talk to you? Or maybe she'll knock on your door for a routine visit?

Caitlyn is the analytical and slow type, so she will not rush anything with you. She'll go nice and slow, starting with befriending you. Sooner or later she'll have you wrapped around her pinky, and you'll be the one to ask her out on a date.

Caitlyn is probably the chillest among the arcane ladies. She is sane enough to respect your boundaries. But do keep in mind that is fiercely protective, and will not hesitate to gun down anyone who she deems as a threat to your well-being.

At last we come to Jinx. She is the most dangerous of the three. Manipulative, stalkery, batshit crazy, you name it. Jinx has every yandere trait in her pack of cards.

For Jinx, it's going to be love at first sight. And since she has absolutely no impulse control, she is going to snatch you away immediately. You are comfortably sleeping in your bed and whoosh. You are waking up in her warehouse.

Jinx does want to make you happy, so she will bring you anything you desire. You want that fancy dress? She'll rob the shopping for you. You want ps5? She'll raid the Sony itself! You ask and you shall receive.

The only thing you can't get is freedom. Jinx has major abandonment issues, owing to how everyone in her life has practically left her. Just the thought of you leaving her will send her into a psychotic break.

The bridge song and, was Zaun once rich?

I think a lot about infrastructure and the built environment. And I frequently find myself humming “...we build no mighty towers...” (I used it as the working title for a relevant report but, understandably, my colleagues told me to stop being weird). It jars on me that the next line is “our homes are built of stone” though. Stone houses are generally a sign that people are doing quite well for themselves economically, or were at some point. Poor people in the past had houses of flammable wood, or more recently sheet metal or other cheap materials that offer poor insulation. We don’t have much information on the state of Zaun’s housing stock, and there are signs the undercity was once more prosperous and populated (eg the cannery and arcade are abandoned, the water tower is dilapidated to the point that Cait and Vi can make it collapse by themselves). Zaun is beautiful, stylish architecture in a state of alluring decay, but are we meant to see it as a place once rich and now fallen? Obviously it’s just a song, even in-universe it doesn’t have to be literal. Many songs just use words that sound good. Also the Doylist explanation for ‘why is Zaun’s architecture obviously not cheap’ is that nobody wants to look at crappy architecture however stunningly animated. From the LoL backstory (which frequently does not cohere with Arcane canon), Oshra Va’Zaun, the port city preceding the twin cities, was very different before a hubristic act of magic or tech made the part that is now the undercity sink, but that was hundreds of years ago, no? Buildings around today would have to have survived the sinking. But maybe they did. Maybe the bridge song is a song of “we used to be equals, our houses are still the same, please help us now we are poor”. To me, that changes the flavour of the Piltover-Zaun exploitation relationship slightly, even if it doesn’t change the present situation for any of the people involved. People are not the history of the place they live, and a hundred years is more than enough to make a new status quo. And to be fair, I don’t think all Zaun’s problems are due to Piltover - clearly the chembarons are only out for themselves and Silco is, at best, thinking of high-level economic prosperity with some hope it will trickle down (”Free trade. Access to the hexgates”). Caitlyn’s probably right in diagnosing the problems of the undercity as both exploitation by its past and present leadership, and Piltover leadership not caring and making it actively worse by sending in Enforcers to administer brutality without justice. Anyway. I like the layers of it, y’know. Even if I may have made them up. It feels very real and not black and white. While generally I think Silco’s right and the undercity would be better off with sovereignty, it’s also quite possible that Zaun messed itself up before and would mess up again, which is what most revolutions unfortunately do.

pic 2: ed and al are from the same artist as the pokemon buttons, my aunt got me the cat pronoun button the christmas after i came out, waluigi Con Dad and dipper all also came from various convention artist alleys, and the “neither” button i believe i got at pride one year.

pic 3: patches!! as u can see i still have a lot of free real estate here but we got Future Corpse and the order of the good death logo, both courtesy of Caitlyn Doughty’s merch shop, a toe beans appreciation patch i actually won at an arcade on my bday this year, and…. you know ;) plus various BIG buttons i’ve picked up at various protests in the last year. there has, unfortunately, been a lot to protest.

Had Makoto really noticed the bruises? The SCARS? Or was it something else entirely? What could Jinx have missed? What could she possibly doin that would make Makoto WORRY About her? "You really worry about me? Why…?" Voice strained in disbelief with just a hint of gratitude and realization hidden beneath. Had it been the alcohol? Or maybe it was in the mental breakdowns she'd have? Throwing shit across the room, clawing at her skull until nails would begin to BLEED? Or it was in the time she'd spend in her family's old abandon arcade throwing punches at that STUPID machine until her knuckles busted and broke and bled? "W-Well, do yourself a favor and stop, you don't need to worry about me. I can take care of myself." LIES. Or maybe DENIAL? Jinx refused to become a burden to anyone ever again. Refused to entrust her autonomy in anyone else. She would NOT depend on ANYONE. No. She wouldn't. Not after… Not again… NEVER. AGAIN.

One of my readers for the void fic mentioned Jinx feeling kinda weak character wise so I’ve added in a section to chapter 3 where Jinx shows Caitlyn this arcade she built from scratch for them inside their evil lair. Random cute fluff with some light angst at the reveal she’s including Vi in the them.

Gosh Vi, like what’s the hold up? Is it the Eldritch horror Caitlyn? The fact that they’re villains just killing people without a care? The human experimentation? C’mon, just ignore that and focus on the super cute arcade Jinx made for the three of you to play pinball in. :’)

Feel like this fic is either going to have Vi just reject them as the last person with a solid sanity stat (with much angst) or just say “Fuck it” and go full How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Void. Getting a high score on the pinball machine while a full blown apocalypse is happening up above.

[Anguished screams of the damned echoing from above as the Void opens]

It took a bit for Vi to give Caitlyn her full attention.

While Vi's own Piltovan apartment was far too small to harbour a gym room, despite it still being quite big for a Zaunite's standards, Caitlyn Kiramman's estate was more than equipped in wealth to refurnish a room, where both women could practise their respective set of combat skills.

The dummy before Vi was not as good as the boxing machine in the old arcade in the Lanes - Do not think about it, do not think about it - but it got its job done. The thick leather cushions on its chest allowed Vi plenty of avenues to pound into it and the sudden swipes with the thick, hard boxing gloves from a set of mechanical arms made sure that Vi had to stay on her toes and remember her defence as much as her offence.

While it was not the same as getting into an actual fight in the Undercity - Vi still had trouble calling it by its colloquial name -, it at least ensured that she did not completely get out of practice. Plus it was a good stress relief. So far, Vi had only destroyed two of those things? Or was it three? She didn't keep count.

It was probably impressive that she managed to destroy any of those devices, based solely on the fact that she was not wearing any boxing gloves or even the Atlas Gauntlets. As a reminiscent trait from Stillwater, Vi had grown accustomed to boxing with her bare hand.

Caitlyn had stepped into the room right after Vi had dodged a swipe of the punching machine before she had seized the dummy by its shoulder and with a sharp snarl twisted it sideways as if she was trying to toss someone into a wall. Naturally, the dummy did not budge, save for some wild wobbling from side to side due to the coil spring it had for a spine.

"Yeh wo-what?!", Vi said in confusion and stopped, realising her throat was clammy. Giving a hand signal to wait, she walked over to a canister, poured herself a cup and downed it. The water from Piltover's wells was icy and crisp. So different compared to the ashen and sulphuric taste of the very river, which had given the town its name.

Vi brushed the back of her hand over her lips and repeated her question: "You want me to give you combat lessons? Are yah sure about that, Cupcake? I mean, even if I hold back my strength, it still won't really be a fair fight. To be honest, I doubt anybody downstream knows how to fight fair."

"We're gonna dive into my childhood for this one," Vi decided. There had been many times where Vi was embarrassed with Caitlyn but what was the use of telling any of those tales when they were so recent? Truth be told, the fighter could be suave but she could also be such a clutch. Caitlyn knew that more than enough now. "There was this game I used to play as a kid, this arcade game. I can picture it now as we speak. I was obsessed with the damn thing and I was sure as hell good at it but it took blood, sweat and tears to get to that point. Anyways, it was a boxing machine and the tally would show up on some flip board after every round. My sister and my brothers would watch me play that thing for hours."

Vi scratched the back of her head and huffed. Even thinking about the story now made her embarrassed. "I was getting cocky with the game when I first started. I thought I was killing it but then one of my brothers, Claggor, went up to the game and beat my high score with a single punch. He was bigger than me, so what, but I was pissed so I went to reclaim my title but I was so flushed with anger, my reflexes went out the window and the machine threw out one of its arms and socked me right in the eye." Vi shook her head a little as a red hue took over her face. "My sister rushed over to see if I was okay but my brothers just laughed at me. Pfft, I was such a little shit back than. Can't believe I let a damn game take my pride away for about a month," Vi recalled and she laughed about the story now.
