watched Genesis of Aquarion (2005) ! holy shit !

I almost dropped this show like twice due to some extremely rough showings in the first batch of episodes but honestly? It really kept turning it around with its insane sense of creativity and pure x-factor. I might love this show?

I have an ongoing relationship with mostly forgotten, boundary pushing 3DCG/2D digipaint composite anime (see: blassreiter); it's such an experimental era, pushing through different philosophies about its integration and Aquarion is definitely one of the more graceful ones. 3DCG feels like a natural fit for mecha works, but the way Aquarion handles its integration and animation feels really slick! It's a pretty damn good looking show to me (for the most part), and I don't know if that says something about my own tastes or how well this show's art direction and visuals hold up.

I got into Aquarion expecting a much more rote, mid-budget show? There's definitely a loose status quo at play but every episode feels like it wants to dig into a major theme or idea, however outlandish. While Aquarion is definitely Cool As Hell, it's not really supposed to be a brutal destroyer or arm of violence; so much of the show is spent pontificating on building a healthier relationship with the earth, the people around you, and your perception of all of it. All of this allows Aquarion to do some truly unshackled stuff, and the ideas and action frequently break out into the outlandish.

Spot one of my favorite episodes from the show, where the crew get trapped in another dimension marked by a completely different art and animation style from the whole rest of the show. So cool.

THE MUSIC TOO! God, the music is so good; Yoko Kanno on score duty and AKINO on insert and title tracks. I have to take a moment to share my favorite insert track (Heath of the Wasteland); while the OPs are legendary, this track is my favorite.

I found myself thinking at the end, "Man, there's so many one-off episodes here that I really enjoy..." and realized... hang on, that's the whole show! Even if the thematic core across the show is a little wobbly, bringing the series' individual cores together makes for an unbreakable whole.

... Where was I?

Yes, the characters!! While the early show (and... some of the later show in bursts) treats its girls pretty badly, I think as the show goes on, it gets away from its early series skeevy disposition (for the most part) and everybody gets their time in the sun! (Even if chained to a man in their emotional arcs. It is the mecha genre.)

I like Apollo and his haughty dogboy demeanor! He's a really fun protagonist, and his connections with the rest of the cast are great. I like Reika and her arc in trying to fight through her depression and sadness! I like the emotional bond she forms with Tsugumi and how it borders on yuri! I quite like Sylvia working past her unhealthy brother complex and finding a stronger and healthier place as the spunky heart of the Aquarion crew!

Even if the bulk of the character writing can be a bit shallow, I did find myself getting really attached to all the DEAVA crew at the end.

Something that does weaken the writing a bit is the "past lives" angle that the writers seem to assume is doing to do a lot of the heavy lifting for them; not something I'm super big on or something that really works in the show. It feels like an early excuse to get the cast together that overstays its welcome in some regards.

There's other caveats, as well. The show really struggles under the weight of the aforementioned "fanservice" and between that and pretty standard tropes tying women to men... it feels like it really struggles with giving its girls dignity; not in a way uncommon to the genre but still uncomfortable enough to mention. It brings down the whole series.

Then there's Episode 17, which... I really don't like dieting plotlines and the entire ordeal at the scale it gets to feels legitimately harrowing, even if it does come down on the bare minimum side of "eating and nourishing your body is good". It's bad and uncomfortable in how it combination sexualizes and denigrates its girls for the weight complex the writers decided to drop onto them for this episode. You're insane. This is terrible messaging.

Due diligence!

I do think once you're able to power through the rougher stuff, Aquarion manages to hit some astonishingly great heights and stays at those heights for huge stretches before it drops the ball. I don't know where it fits in the already stuffed pantheon of mecha anime, but it has definitely Mugen Punched its way into my heart.

Now to never, ever touch those sequels. (If anyone has a link to the original series OVAs, though, hit me up!)

if there’s one thing the Aquarion series got right it was reusing the Genesis of Aquarion song in every single series + OVA’s, like they knew full goddamn well how iconic that song is and they were COMPLETELY RIGHT for using it again

So, like when I was getting back into anime in like 2016 or 2017. I watch three particular anime that just got me back into the bs that anime was, they were;

Starmyu High School Star Muscial, Black Butler, Vampire Knight, and Aquarion Evol.

And three out of four have fucking sequels coming out!!!!!

Like Vampire Knight Memories' been running for a while now, and it went from worse Incest Twilight to the Prince of a Human Empire falls in love with a Vampire Princess whose having sex with her sister in order to stop Vampire racism (also found out that a character I thought was a weird collective fanfic oc was real).

Black Butler's anime hasn't been canon since the beginning and got really fucking weird with Real Ciel and erased the entirety of season 2 'cause it was at least fun and crazy.

And Aquarion's apparently gonna get a fourth fucking season! Aquarion Logos sucked ass, it was just stupid, and I hope they go back to the weird angel doggie cock blocking his master's weirdo human lover while said master's ex acts like a crazy yandere fucking up everyone's lives with BLness! (Seriously, Logos sucked)

And Starmyu's already finished, I think.

I'm just gonna say this, I love these shows, but god, I hope Aquarion and Black Butler's new seasons are actually good.

The official Twitter are the cause of Teppen?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, the tv set anime of typically the Teppen?!!! (Summit!!! ) manga, revealed in Wednesday it can easily premiere on the Abema streaming service about July 2 from 22: 00 s. m. (9: 00 a. m. EDT). It will then air on Tokyo MX channel upon July 2 with 22: 30 l. m. (9: 35 a. m. EDT), and it will also run on Chukyo TV, Sun TV, in addition to Hokkaido TV.

Aquarion Logos

Questo anime è di una bruttezza rara, e sono arrivata fino al 5° episodio maledicendo tutto e tutti. 

Tecnicamente questo dovrebbe far parte della saga di Sousei No Aquarion - anime mandato in onda su MTV in tempi non sospetti cioè anni fa - e Aquarion Evol, seguito di Sousei, che è riuscito nell’epica impresa di mandare a quel paese tutto il suo prequel. 

Bravissimo. 

Sousei lo ricordo con affetto: mecha, reincarnazioni, filosofie, amori impossibili, angoscia, dramma, psicologie dei personaggi, angeli delle tenebre... il tutto contornato da quei cori angelici molto apocalittici. 

Difficile dimenticare l’episodio dove Apollo, Silvia e Reika vengono sbattuti nel mondo dei sogni: un trip allucinogeno, con strade che non portavano da nessuna parte, persone che scomparivano dal nulla e quel senso di oppressione che ti teneva incollato allo schermo. Sono passati diversi anni da quell’episodio, ma ancora è inciso nei miei pensieri. 

E poi la sofferenza di Sirius, i dubbi di Reika e il senso di colpa di Apollo...personaggi con psicologie complesse e tanto, tanto angst.

Infine i dialoghi. Sousei ti spiazzava con frasi come:

Oh incantevole rosa in fiore, scarlatti petali che grondano vita, verdi foglie benevole, fragrante e splendido effluvio che si riversa nell'aria, il mio sangue accogli con le tue labbra con la tua lingua assaporane il gusto bagnatene la gola e morente avvizzisci [...] tuttavia la musa svanisce e la mia poesia resta incompiuta. (Sirius)

Ehm...grazie Sirius per la poesia.

Poi venne Aquarion Evol, il sequel, e qui cominciarono i dolori. Poichè riprendeva alcuni elementi di Sousei ne era chiaramente un suo proseguimento. E non era male. 

Bei personaggi - apparte i due protagonisti che li avrei presi a mazzate -  e combattimenti affascinanti. Certo non c’era più tutta la filosofia del vecchio Aquarion, ma poteva andare. 

Peccato nel nel finale venga detto che il protagonista di Sousei che sapevamo tutti essere la reincarnazione di Ali del Sole, in realtà non fosse tale personaggio...ma il suo cane. 

Il cane.

IL CANE. 

E quindi inevitabilmente ti vai a rivedere tutto Sousei no Aquarion per capire se sei stata sempre poco sveglia tu o all’Evol è preso un infarto. 

La fortuna di averti incontrato/a, la sfortuna di averti incontrato/a. [...] Sarebbe stato meglio se non ti avessi mai incontrato/a... (Apollo/Apollonius e Silvia/Celiane)

Acclarato quindi che il finale dell’Evol rovina il suo prequel e la sua stessa base, avranno giustamente pensato:-” Perchè non fare un terzo Aquarion?”

CONSIDERAZIONI

Gli element non hanno poteri che non siano la propria voce

Almeno negli altri Aquarion i protagonisti avevano dei superpoteri che li aiutavano a contrastare i nemici. Dall’invisibilità alla psicocinesi...e anche chi ne era sprovvisto aveva comunque caratteristiche tali da permetterti di capire la loro presenza sul campo di battaglia ( Tsugumi in Sousei ad esempio) 

Oddio... in Evol c’èrano due personaggi di cui uno aveva il potere di fare buchi e l’altro di riempirli.

Qui invece i personaggi vengono scelti come Element in base al potere della voce, che mi sembra una cosa veramente tirata su con la gru. 

A lezione di calligrafia

Nel primo Aquarion i nemici erano gli Angeli delle tenebre che risucchiavano gli essere umani per il loro sostentamento. In Evol i cattivi erano una razza aliena. In logos gli avversari sono... le lettere. La calligrafia in realtà. 

Grazie ad un virus che viene iniettato nel kanji, quel kanji prende vita diventando cattivo e facendo del male alle persone. Ad esempio il kanji di malattia infetto fa si che la gente si ammali. 

uau sento il brivido dell’epicità. 

Sousei no Aquarion che abbiamo fatto di male per passare da Toma all’alfabeto giapponese?! 

Akira è... Fudo?

Apparte che Akira è il protagonista più antipatico di tutti gli Aquarion messi insieme: serio, perfetto, diligente, sa sempre cosa fare, non sbaglia un colpo, ha sempre le parole giuste, sbuca fuori all’improvviso. 

Questa sua perfezione infatti, varie volte mi ha ricordato il mai troppo compianto Comandante Fudo delle precedenti edizioni. Ci manca solo che Akira sia la reincarnazione del Maestro delle Tre Frecce e siamo apposto. 

I personaggi

Tranne Maia, tutti gli altri sono dimenticabilissimi.

Maia si salva da questo piattume perchè è un personaggio quantomeno originale e abbastanza tosto.  Certo, la sua decisione di passare dal lato dei buoni in una puntata è abbastanza ridicola, ma lasciamo passare. 

L’altra protagonista che tecnicamente dovrebbe formare il tipico triangolo amoroso è di una noia mortale: rappresenta il tipico personaggio timido che per colpa di qualche trauma non riesce a tirare fuori la voce ( giusto per restare in tema). Probabilmente nasconderà un potere immenso e una volta sbloccata, farà il culo a tutti. 

Perchè lo dico? Perchè è esattamente come la protagonista di Evol. Identica. 

I comprimari invece sono trascurabili, con un forse sulla bambina appena arrivata che pare un pò più sveglia degli altri.

Il contesto

Mi fa piacere sapere che la Deava, che nel primo Aquarion era praticamente una base militare, ultima spiaggia contro i potentissimi angeli adesso sia...un negozio.

Il suo comandate è una tizia che di giorno, fa la ragazza immagine del locale e quando le lettere attaccano..si toglie il vestito e tramite pannelli iper tecnologici trasforma il posto in un’area militare. 

Per inciso questo non aumenta il dramma. 

Non mi fa pensare che state combattendo seriamente. 

l’amore

Non è un anime di robottoni che si menano per la salvezza del mondo, senza la sua buona dose di ship. Ma qui si esagera: già nel 5 ° episodio abbiamo il triangolo amoroso e un mezzo inciucio tra la Comandante e quello che vuole fare il politico. Troppo frettoloso. E forzato. 

I combattimenti

Brutti. Velocissimi e senza un minimo di pathos. Il mio cuore ha sussultato un attimo nel vedere nella prima puntata il Pugno Infinito - chiaro richiamo al primo Aquarion - per poi morire di noia nelle battaglie successive.

Questa è una domanda in realtà: perchè le teste dei personaggi sono a punta? perchè hanno quella forma strana? 

IN CONCLUSIONE: Non credo che continuerò a guardarlo perchè mi fa stare male vedere tutte queste brutture. Sembra pure sparito il concetto di reincarnazione che tanto avevo amato nei primi Aquarion, per far posto ad un anime di tizi che combattono il male in modi sempre più assurdi.
