I pieced this quilt. The pattern is called Batty by Apples and Beavers. My friend Becky did the custom quilting. While the quilting was NOT cheap, it is incredible! It really brings the quilt to life! I could not be more thrilled! I’d love to know what you all think of it. The photos are Becky’s as I don’t have it back home yet. SPOOKTACULAR!!!

Rotten Apples & Frontier Justice
 Rotten Apples and Frontier Justice
By CowboyJen
My best friend Kendra had a small overbite that she grew into but there were a few boys who liked to tease her about it. One very hot summer day we were riding our horses in the old apple orchard down in what was soon to become a rural suburban development dubbed Woodland Estates. The two brick walls with cement lions on them already graced the entryway of our riding trail.
I was around 11 and she was 10. A few of the boys were riding their bikes up and down the paved road which had been a dirt path a few weeks prior and the novelty of having blacktop was too much to resist. They basically rode up and down back and forth and the speed bumps were great to “get air”.
We ignored them, they ignored us, the way it was meant to be. One boy, and we will never know why, and perhaps he didn’t know either, suddenly  felt pretty brave and breached the unspoken boy/girl wall.  Maybe having his friends nearby to back him up or maybe to prove he was “a man” or If you believed my mom, it was “his way of showing us he had a crush”. No matter his reasons. He waited until we had dismounted to feed green apples to the horses Beau and Gypsy and veered off the smooth black top.  He stood on his pedals to gain speed as he approached and  he was bent forward over that K Mart bike’s handlebars as he got closer and closer. We saw him coming and sort of just watched the on coming flurry of feathered hair and Starsky and Hutch T shirt.
This boy, thinking to spook the horses and cause us trouble passed us as close as he could and yelled “Bucky the Buck toothed Beaver!”
Kendra was unphased and so were our seasoned mounts. She took the apple that was meant for Gypsy and hit the boy right in the back of the head from about a 12 foot range. The rotten part splatted in his dirty blonde hair but the solid part made an audible “thud” as it connected to his thick skull. He screamed in pain “shit.. ouch!” and slid his bike sideways in the grass, staining his Sears Husky jeans no doubt.  He paused a second on the ground, probably debating if pretending to be really hurt might save him or hoping  his friends were on the way.  No luck either way so he stood  up, picked up his bike and faced us with green grass stains and what was likely sweat, apple juice and tears on his face.
Before he could turn to mount his bike I took my shot. Wham, right in the knee, not as accurate as Kendra but it got his attention. The look in his face was that of a man who suddenly realized he had severely underestimated the enemies he decided to create. Kendra already had two apples in hand and I reloaded while she fired off another shot. One missed, hitting his bike as it dropped to the ground. The other caused him to holler out “stop!” when it hit him in the stomach.
Two tween girls, who both had their own baseball gloves and killed long summer days throwing rocks at trees and golf balls at tin cans are formidable foes. Poor kid realized the error of his ways too late. There was no time for him to formulate a plan. The onslaught of rotten green apples put him squarely in survival mode and he ran to the nearest dwarf apple tree. He hid behind it and tried bargaining. “Stop it you guys!”  One, two, three apples whizzed by him and one hit the tree causing a satisfying splatter pattern. “Come on guys.. stop!”.  A few more hits and we began to flank him. Our horses calmly grazed the shaded grass and we loaded our arms and moved to flush him from his barrier.
In a moment of what I am sure he thought was brilliance, he grabbed a low branch and swung up, taking a hit to the seat of his pants and one to the back. A hard, well aimed hit in the soft part of the small of his back. I heard it and Kendra said “ooo  nailed him”.
Like a squirrel in Traxx Tennis shoes he moved around the tree and climbed up to a more covered branch forcing us to back away to see him better. Kendra seemed satisfied that he was out of range and I followed her lead to walk backwards to the horses. She started to pile up apples and he yelled down “Knock it off you Ass holes, i need to go home”.   We bit into and chewed the bitter green apples while sitting on the ground next to our ammunition pile. The other boys had dropped their bikes by the Lion topped brick walls and were sitting on it, watching. The trapped boy noticed them and pleaded “Guys.. come help”.  They only responded with “they are just girls” but none of them jumped down to aid him.
It was getting to be suppertime and he decided we had grown tired of watching him. He slowly descended but as he hit the last branch before the ground we pelted him with the squishiest apples we could pick up. The splatter was satisfying but watching him scramble back to his perch was even more so.
We ate snacks from our saddle bags and waited. He tried a few times to make an escape.  Once even jumping to the ground and trying to make a run for it. He was not fast enough nor tolerant of pain enough to get more than one step before  swiveling and scratching his way back to his previous perch.  The funniest attempt was when he tried something he had seen in the movies. “I will come down with my hands up” and as much as we wanted to see that Kendra and I bombarded the tree trunk.  Every time he would try the pain of the projectile apples kept him in his place.
In the final stages before the street lamp came on (we had one now) he begged “I’m supposed to be home now. Mom is going to be really mad”.  We sympathized slightly, knowing the mom wrath of those kids late for supper or not home right after the darkness triggered the light to come on. But I guess he shouldn’t have hurled that insult. .
The other boys had left, we were bored and. in desperation, and wishing he would not have hogged so much Kool Aid he yelled. “I gotta pee really bad guys.. come ON!”.  He had two choices, unzip and pee from the tree, which would expose him just enough that we would have future ammo about “what we saw” or well, not unzip. His body made the decision for him. Enough was enough and we rode past him with a final  apple lobbed over his head. We never spoke of that again. Not to him, not to each other, no one. He had done his time. Frontier justice had been served. Lesson learned.
Lessons: Don’t be a bully. If you drink too much Kool Aid and decide to take on two tween girls, it  is  best to have an exit strategy. Girls can’t always throw as hard as boys their age but their accuracy can be scary good. Girls have more stamina and patience in a stand off than you want to test. Straight girls can and will take it to the next level.

Enlarged Reality in Education
Enlarged Reality in Education
With the present reception of portable advances and the ongoing advances in equipment, AR is getting progressively available and extensively utilized in training.
Customary strategies for instruction as we probably are aware it are turning into a relic of times gone by. They are getting progressively digitized and are being driven by innovation advancements. Indeed, the instruction innovation industry (purported EdTech) is to reach $252 billion by 2020, developing at a 17% yearly rate.
Among the most huge patterns in EdTech, increased reality legitimately takes a main position. With more than one billion clients expected to join the pattern by 2020, it opens a pool of chances for instructive foundations and organizations.
In this article Augmented reality app development, we will investigate this EdTech pattern in more detail just as give crisp thoughts and master exhortation on the most proficient method to utilize AR improvement in training.
Utilizing AR in Education and Training: The Opportunities and Challenges
Expanded reality in training can fill various needs. It helps understudies effectively secure, process, and recollect data. Moreover, AR makes learning itself all the more captivating and fun.
It is additionally not restricted to a solitary age gathering or level of instruction and can be utilized similarly well in all degrees of tutoring: from pre-school training up to school, or even at work.
Advantages of Augmented Reality in Education
Open learning materials: whenever, anyplace. Enlarged reality can possibly supplant paper course books, physical models, notices, printed manuals, and so forth. It offers versatile and more affordable learning materials. Accordingly, instruction turns out to be progressively open and versatile.
No exceptional gear is required. Not at all like VR, expanded reality doesn't require any costly equipment. Since 73% of all adolescents as of now claim a cell phone, AR advancements are promptly accessible for use for most of the intended interest group.
Higher understudy commitment and intrigue. Intelligent, gamified Augmented reality developers learning can have a critical positive effect on understudies. It keeps them connected all through the exercise and makes learning fun and easy.
Improved coordinated effort capacities. Increased reality applications offer tremendous chances to enhance and shake up exhausting classes. Intelligent exercises, where all understudies are engaged with the learning procedure simultaneously, help improve collaboration aptitudes.
A quicker and increasingly successful learning process. Augment technology solutions in training assists understudies with accomplishing better outcomes through representation and full inundation in the topic. Words usually can't do a picture justice, isn't that so? Along these lines, rather than perusing hypothesis about something, understudies can see it with their very own eyes, in real life.
Down to earth learning. Aside from tutoring, proficient preparing can likewise profit extraordinarily from the utilization of AR. For instance, exact generation of in-field conditions can help ace the down to earth abilities required for a specific occupation.
Protected and effective work environment preparing. Envision having the option to rehearse in heart medical procedure or working a space transport without placing other individuals in peril or gambling a large number of dollars in harm if something turns out badly. It is conceivable with AR.
Generally, material to any degree of instruction and preparing. Be it learning games for kindergarten or hands on preparing, AR isn't constrained to just one use case or field of utilization.
Difficulties of Augmented Reality in Education
In spite of the recorded advantages, there are sure entanglements you should consider when building EdTech arrangements with enlarged reality:
An absence of fundamental preparing. A few educators may battle to try these new advances, as their experience preparing doesn't give the important abilities. Just the most receptive instructors and imaginative instructive organizations are prepared to apply enlarged reality applications in training.
Reliance on equipment. Utilizing expanded reality in the study hall requires a specific asset base. For instance, not all understudies have cell phones equipped for supporting AR applications.
Content compactness issues. The AR application you fabricate requirements to work similarly well on all stages and gadgets. Be that as it may, it is for all intents and purposes difficult to give a similar nature of AR content on any gadget.
AR in Education, Examples, and Use Cases
Regardless of a typical skepticism, Augmented reality companies advancements offer far beyond pursuing pokemon around town. Here are some extraordinary instances of increased reality in training.
Enlarged Reality in the Classroom
Presumably, the most well-known application for expanded reality in instruction is the utilization of AR applications legitimately in the study hall. For this situation, they can enable the instructor to clarify a subject, give a visual portrayal of the material, and assist understudies with testing out their insight by and by.
In particular, you can discover a for practically any subject, including science, geometry, zoology, language structure, and in any event, programming.
Separation Learning
By utilizing increased reality, understudies can adapt even outside the study hall. Also, on the web or separation learning can be simpler and increasingly proficient with AR-supported instructive materials.
For instance, Modly, a language-learning application, has as of late coordinated an AR-based virtual educator to assist clients with rehearsing their abilities as though they were in a genuine setting.
Promoting in Education
There is immense potential in AR advancements for promoting and publicizing, even in the training field. Various colleges in the USA are as of now utilizing AR visits to expand enlistment and help new understudies discover their way around grounds.
For instance, the Community College of Beaver County, Pennsylvania, utilizes expanded reality to convey different kinds of substance, including video, sound, and advanced productions. Therefore, the application gives a fun and educational approach to investigate the grounds. The application likewise has gamification components to make the experience significantly additionally captivating.
The most effective method to Use Augmented Reality in the Education Field
With so much mammoths as Apple and Google driving AR advances forward, at the present time could be the best time to join the pattern. Committed designer apparatuses including ARCore and ARKit, combined with incredible equipment, for example, iPhone X, make it workable for organizations to manufacture fruitful AR-based EdTech arrangements.
In view of our broad involvement with this field, we might want to give you a fundamental guide for AR improvement in training:
Characterize your objective and target crowd. Contingent upon the age of your clients and the broadly useful of the application, the usefulness will vary.
Clean the thought through statistical surveying and suitability testing to comprehend its genuine potential.
Fabricate a POC to try out the capacities of the picked tech stack (it is a suggested methodology for creative advancements, including AR and VR).
Make a MVP — the fundamental application form, just to test the center usefulness.
Test the item and emphasize toward progress. Consider that you should refresh the application consistently with new AR content.
Augmented reality application development in Education: Lead the Way of Innovation or Get Left Behind
As should be obvious, enlarged reality in instruction has gigantic potential, which is still to be revealed. With the present appropriation of portable advances and the ongoing advances in equipment, AR is getting progressively available and comprehensively utilized. Along these lines, at the present time may be a decent time to make the initial phases toward this path. Else, you chance passing up the opportunity to win your piece of the overall industry.

“The Mommy Myth”: Revolt against the MRS (Part One)
Tumblr media
MRS: As explained, “Today we acknowledge that women inhabit many identities throughout the day, and they can be in conflict with each other, so we are constantly negotiating among them. But what the feminine mystique exposed was that all women, each and every one of them, were supposed to inhabit one and only one seamless subject position: that of the selfless, never complaining, always happy wife and mother who cheerfully eradicated whatever other identities she might have had and instead put her husband, her children, and the cleanliness of her house first. Once you grew up, you were supposed to encase yourself in this subject position as if it were a wetsuit, and never take it off. This asphyxiating and disciplining subject position might best be called Moms ‘R’ Us, or MRS, the wife/mother...”
The Women’s International Conspiracy from Hell (WITCH), Mother’s Day, Cleveland, 1969. Broadsides were posted on telephone poles reading:
Today, one day of the year, America is celebrating Motherhood, in home...church...restaurant...candy shop...flower store. The other 364 days she preserves the apple pie of family life and togetherness, and protects the sanctity of the male ego and profit. She lives through her husband and children. She is sacrificed on the alter of reproduction...she is damned to the dreary world of domesticity by day, and legal rape by night...She is convinced that happiness and her lost identity can be recovered by buying--more and more and more and more.
Tumblr media
“Wages for Housework”
We clean your homes and your factories. We raise the next generation of workers for you. Whatever else we may do, we are the housewives of the world. In return for our work, you have only asked us to work harder...we are serving notice to you that we intend to be paid for the work we do. We want wages for every dirty toilet, every painful childbirth, every indecent assault, every cup of coffee, and every smile. And if we don’t get what we want, then we will simply refuse to work any longer. Now you will rot in your own garbage. We want it in cash, retroactive and immediately. And we want all of it.
Gloria Steinem’s hopes for the future in U.S. News and World Report, 1975
Responsibility for children won’t be exclusively the woman’s anymore, but shared equally by men--and shared by the community, too. That means that work patterns will change for both women and men, and women can enter all fields just as men can.
Tumblr media
The late 1960s for women:
Men got paid more than women for the same exact job.
Women could get credit cards in their husband’s name but not their own.
Many divorced, single, and separated women found it hard to get credit cards at all.
Women could not get mortgages on their own and if a couple applied for one, only the husband’s income was considered.
Women faced discrimination in education, scholarship awards, and on the job.
The collective marriage property was legally the husband’s.
Women kept out of various jobs, like: doctor, college professor, bus driver, business manager.
Knocked out in the delivery room.
Birth Control options were limited (and abortion was illegal).
1960 statistics (it’s not all Leave It To Beaver)
40% of the work force were women, even with young children.
It was not reflected in the law or the media.
“Yeah flirting is fun. A man opens a door for me, I thank him, he smiles---and electricity ripples through us both. A year later I’m flushing out a diaper and he’s opening other doors.” Carold Hanish and Elizabeth Sutherland, Women of the World Unite--We Have Nothing to Lose But Our Men!
Tumblr media
In March 18, 1970. Several feminists came into the offices of Ladies Home Journal to stage what would be an 11 hour sit-in to suggest changes to it (and after that, all women’s magazines) where they asserted as the magazine was a magazine for mothers and wives, they needed to establish an on-site childcare center for employees with young children and it’d be run entirely by women and that “the magazine seek out nonwhite women for its staff in proportion to the population”, then added minimum wage and worker participation in editorial decisions. The Editor in Chief, John Mack Carter agreed to an eight-page insert in the August 1970 issue.
Tumblr media
The insert contained articles and sidebars entitled “Housewives’ Bill of Rights” (demands for paid maternity leave, paid vacations, free 24 hour childcare centers, social security benefits for years of labor in the home, health insurance”. “Help Wanted: Female. 99.6 Hours a Week. No Pay. Bed and Bored. Must Be Good with Children” talked about the inequities of homemaking and the less glamorous parts of homemaking and with all the work to make the home comfy they are greeted by smirking husbands asking what they have done all day.
“Babies Are Born, Not Delivered”, the writer/new mom documented what happened in the maternity ward (to Susan Mayfield, Karen Wheeler, Mrs. Sinclair, Claudia Henderson): pubic hair shaved off, being wheeled into a room on her lonesome, being told by a resident when she would actually have the baby, being told her pains weren’t real and she’d have to wait for the doctor, when about to deliver an anesthesiologist appeared and gave her a spinal despite her protests, doctor pulled baby out with forceps.
The articles spoke to the readers like they are comrades together rather than “I am the expert and you’re not” tone.
Tumblr media
In 1972 (first appearing as an insert in the NYT in 1971), Ms. Magazine was born. Letters to the Editor had women of all ages and backgrounds flooding the section with letters about their grind with sexism. Jane O’Rielly wrote her famous essay “The Housewife’s Moment of Truth” with her “click” moments where she writes that:
I thought that most of my clicks were behind me, but tonight, as I cleared the table, I had a new one. I was complimenting myself (since no one else had) on a meal I’d gone to some trouble to prepare. I began to wonder why so many of us wait trembling for “the verdict” at every meal; why my mother and so many others risk antagonizing their families by asking outright if everything is okay.
I decided it’s not just neurosis. We really know they’re judging even when they don’t say so. Housewifing is an occupation in which every single waking act is judged by the persons who mean the most to you in the world. Is the house clean? Is the food good? Are the children well-behaved?
A thousand times a day our contracts come up for renewal. No wonder our nerves are shot.
Tumblr media
Here are some following article titles from actual Ms. articles:
1973 had “Job Advice for ‘Just a Housewife’” in the November issue and it’s May issue devoted to motherhood with Letty Cottin Pogrebin writing “We care deeply about children whether we have our own or not. We work to improve educational curricula, child-care facilities, health services, and the childbirth experience. We are saying that men are parents too; that fatherhood need be no less important or time-consuming than motherhood...Truly, feminists are talking about choice: about making the decision to become pregnant and choosing a motherly role that is right for ourselves and our children.”
1974 had articles titled “New Help for Mothers Alone” (February), “How the Economy Uses Housewives” (May), and “Surviving Widowhood” and “Must We Be Childless to be Free?” (October).
1975 had “Kids in the Office, and What-Else-Is-New with Child Care” in March, “How Hospitals Complicate Childbirth” (June), and a special section on mothers and daughters in June.
Earlier that decade, writer Alix Kates Shulman (of works like Memoirs of an Ex-Prom Queen, the ultimate Karen Wheeler book, and planned the 1968 demonstrations outside of the Miss America contest) wrote about that her previously equal companionship with her husband deteriorated when they had children.
Now I was restricted to the company of two demanding preschoolers and to the four walls of an apartment. It seemed unfair that while my husband’s life had changed little when the children were born, domestic life had become the only life I had”
His work demanded more travel and late nights, so they wrote a marriage agreement where they asserted that “each member of the family has an equal right to his/her own time, work, values, and choices...The ability to earn more money is already a privilege which must not be compounded by enabling the larger earner to buy out of his/her duties and put the burden on the one who earns less, or on someone hired from outside” and that domestic jobs be shared 50/50 and any “overtime in any domestic job, she/he must be compensated by equal extra work by the other” and had a job breakdown that included childcare duties like: waking, getting clothes ready, making lunches, seeing notes and homework and money and passes and books must be collected, getting babysitters (hours of phoning), calling doctors and checking symptoms and filling prescriptions, staying home with sick kids, providing activities. Shulman and her husband became happier, she wrote more books for adults and children, and her husband after 4 months of the agreement heard their daughter say “You know Daddy, I used to love Mommy more than you, but now I love you both the same.”
Tumblr media
Soon magazines started writing sample marriage contracts with even Glamour magazine featuring an article how to write your own contract. There were also men staying home as househusbands with one telling Time magazine in 1974: “I love my son Adam, but I can see how taking care of a kid can drive a woman up the wall.” Dr. Spock (and other childcare experts) were taken to task for assuming that whatever happened with kids was Mom’s fault and her responsibility. Gloria Steinem cited Department of Labor stats that put the value of a housewife’s work value to be around $8000-$9000 a year because that is what would cost her husband to pay for the services of a housewife, including prostitution (see Marital Rape and faking orgasms). Naturally people cried “Communism!” or “offensive to middle-class sensibilities”. McCall’s magazine citing a study from Chase Manhattan Bank economist noted that for a man to hire a cook, laundress, nursemaid, chauffeur, and gardener he’d be paying $10 grand a year back then and nuns did about the same work as housewives but were entitled to Social Security. Clare Booth Luce, in 1977 for The Saturday Evening Post, wrote that the work of housewives and mothers was now worth $20,000 a year.
Childcare became a hot topic, even though President Nixon claimed there was no need for national child development programs and such a program was anti-family. Also the idea of artificial pregnancies became attractive sounding to some (hey think about it, maintaining dress size and drinking booze and eating whatever and riding roller coasters?). Shulamith Firestone, author of The Dialectic of Sex: The Case for Feminist Revolution, argued women will always be kept down until they were freed from “reproductive biology by every means available” and until artificial wombs were created, moms should be compensated for labor and dads be involved, Ted.......Also that children would benefit by being cut loose from dependency on parents who’d pass their issues on to their children and more kibbutz style households over the nuclear family model. In contrast, Jane Alpert, wrote “Mother Right” where she insisted motherhood was a source of female power and be harnessed in service for liberation and that mothers can pass on the values of empathy, pacifism, cooperation, intuition, protective feelings towards others to counter competition, individualism, and aggression.

Finally have all three of these tops finished, backing made and batting rounded up. Ready to head to my long arm quilter. I’m super excited to have these finished. I’ve chosen the binding too. Still need to make that. The 4th one is completely finished already. These will be gifted to my great nieces for Christmas this year!
I added the eyelashes to these. I feel kind of bad that the first one didn’t get eyelashes. But it did get a bird! This is the first one I did as a pattern test. This is before it was quilted.
Tumblr media
I LOVE this pattern. It’s very easy and goes together quickly. Pattern is called Unicorn Garden by Apples and Beavers.
Which one is your favorite?

The Lossie Lane Quilt: A Testimony of Friendship Between Two Black Pioneer Settlers
By Lucie Heins, Assistant Curator, Western Canadian History
Since the writing of the Matilda Bailey-Day quilt story, a number of quilts made by early Black pioneers have been donated to the Royal Alberta Museum. One such quilt is the Lossie Lane quilt. Through a series of conversations with her granddaughter Christine Beaver, I am able to share the life of another Black pioneer and quiltmaker.
Tumblr media
Above: The Wagon Wheel quilt hand-pieced and hand-quilted by Lossie Lane
Lossie (Barksdale) Lane made a quilt for her dear friend Ivy Beaver. Although it was their experiences as early Black pioneers to Canada that solidified their friendship, they did not actually meet until their adult children married each other on April 8, 1950. The union of Ollie Lenora Lane and James Willis Beaver, Christine’s parents, planted the seed that blossomed into a lifelong friendship.
Tumblr media
Above: Lossie Lane and Ivy Beaver, best friends forever
Lossie and Ivy lived different lives in different communities but both had moved far away from what had been their home in the United States to a new home in Canada. Lossie’s Friendship Quilt is a testimony of that friendship as noted in the inscription on the quilt:
To Ivy Beaver Remember Me From Lossie Lane 1960
Tumblr media
Above: The inscription on the quilt
The Lane family came from Oklahoma, USA. Christine’s maternal great-grandfather Julius Caesar Lane (age 59) and great-grandmother Emma (Bruce) Lane (age 42) had both been born into slavery. They made their way to Maidstone, Saskatchewan in 1909, two years after Oklahoma and the Indian Territories merged to form the State of Oklahoma. Within a short period of time new segregation laws were introduced, making life difficult for the African American community. Many began to look to Canada for refuge; free homesteads were available in Western Canada. In the article “The Shiloh People: Maidstone, SK” author Leander K. Lane writes that a “Canadian border entry record show that at least seventy-five individuals representing 12 different families arrived at Emerson, Manitoba in the spring of 1910. They all stated their destination as Maidstone Saskatchewan.” In 1912 Julius and Emma Leotis’ son Leander Lane Sr., his wife Lossie and their eldest son, Leotis, traveled to Maidstone to join them. They came at a time when Alberta and Saskatchewan sentiments against African American immigration encouraged the Government of Canada Order in Council to bar such immigration. Although the law was never passed, it would appear that Leander and Lossie almost never made it into Canada. The family lore suggests that Lossie Lane had said, “They didn’t have to be so mean to us” in reference to the border officials of the day. Despite encountering racism, many hardships and cold winters, the Lane family were able to find contentment in their new home.
Tumblr media
Above: Leander and Lossie Lane c. 1940s
The Beaver family also came from Oklahoma. Christine’s paternal great-grandfather James Moses Beaver (age 45), great-grandmother Hattie Miller (age 40) and their two sons James “Edward” (age 17) and Walker Miller (age 13) were the only Beavers to cross the Canadian border at Emerson, MB.  In 1911, they further travelled to the city of Strathcona by train. In May 1912 when their household effects and basic farming tools arrived in Edmonton on a freight train, the Beavers made the three-day, 138-km journey to the smallest Black pioneer settlement of Campsie, 16 km west of Barrhead, AB. According to Christine’s granddad, Walker, his mother rode in a horse-drawn buggy while he, his brother and father walked and led a team of oxen pulling a cart full of their possessions. On their way to their homestead in Campsie they had to unhitch the oxen several times to pull the buggy through the mud holes, the muskeg and the underbrush. Walker Beaver said the mosquitos were fierce.
Tumblr media
Above: The Beaver Homestead in Campsie, AB
In March 1920 Walker Beaver married Ivy Belle Bowen in Amber Valley, AB. Ivy was born in Evergreen, Alabama and eventually moved with her family to Amber Valley. Once married, she moved to her husband Walker’s homestead in Campsie where they raised their family. Christine’s father, James Willis, his brother and two sisters attended the Benton School of District #3319, officially recorded by the government of Alberta as the only designated “segregated” or “blacks only” school district in Alberta. Despite this designation, many parents of white students opted to send their children there because it was closer than the school for “whites."
Life was never easy on the farm, but Ivy’s tenacious character coupled with her “waste not” attitude made her a formidable farmwoman. She raised chickens and turkeys, selling their eggs. She also planted enormous gardens. Ivy had a reputation for having one of the most beautiful flower gardens in the community. Her foundation plants included rose bushes, lilacs and apple trees creating a backdrop for the hundreds of seedlings she planted each spring. Every January the dining room table became a plant nursery. She started her seeds in tinned cans she’d saved all year just for this purpose.
Tumblr media
Above: Walker and Ivy Beaver, 1920
After Lossie’s husband, Leander Lane Sr., died of prostate cancer in 1947, Lossie left Maidstone to live with her eldest daughter Rosie (Lane) Walker in Edmonton. Christine remembers that every summer her grandmother came to stay with her family on the farm in the community of Tiger Lily, eleven km northwest of Campsie. Christine’s father James Willis had moved from Campsie in the early 1940s to the second homestead registered to his grandfather James Moses. Lossie took residence on the top floor of the house. There she would spend six to eight hours a day, except for Sundays, hand-stitching quilts. According to Christine, her grandmother “pieced everything together by hand…She had the patience of Job”. By the end of the summer, Lossie would have completed a batch of brand new quilts. Christine remembers that “every quilt on the beds at home was made by my grandmother.”
Tumblr media
Above: Lossie Lane took residence on the top floor of Christine’s family home to quilt. Christine is second from the left.
It was during these summers that Christine learned to sew and make quilts. When Christine was six years old her Grannie Lane instructed her in the art of threading needles. She would thread five to 10 needles at a time and leave them within reach of her grandmother’s hands. Christine remembers her grandmother calling her in a booming voice, “Christmas!” as this was her nickname and “she would give me two squares to stitch together.” She sewed quickly so she could go out and play but Grannie Lane would take one look at her stitches and tell Christine to rip it out and start again. Christine says that to this day “if it doesn’t look right I rip it out.” Christine has become an accomplished quilter due to spending so much of her formative years with her grandmother.
Tumblr media

Having experienced economic challenges, Lossie was always frugal and resourceful. She always used what was readily available to make her quilts. After a fire at the local variety store located on Hastings Street in Burnaby, B.C., Lossie rescued and cleaned smoke-damaged blue and yellow shirts, then took them apart and used them for the blocks, border, and backing of the friendship quilt (below). Although Christine is not sure where the other fabrics came from, it is likely to have been other scraps of clothing, flour sacks, and old curtains.
Tumblr media
Above: The Wagon Wheel quilt.
The pattern used for this quilt is called Wagon Wheel. It is not certain if Lossie specifically chose this pattern for Ivy or whether it was what she had on hand. According to Christine’s grandmother, this quilt pattern was once used to signal wagons heading north to Canada as part of the Underground Railroad. In a radio interview with NPR News Station in Washington D.C., professor of art history at Howard University Dr. Raymond Dabard talks about how quilts were embedded with coded messages using traditional American quilt patterns. One such message was “The Monkey Wrench turned the Wagon Wheel toward Canada on the Bear’s Paw trail to the Cross Roads”. The Monkey Wrench, the Wagon Wheel, the Bear’s Paw and the Crossroads are all quilt patterns. This code was imparted by Ozella Williams known as the quilt lady in Charleston, South Carolina to Dr. Raymond Dabard and Jacqueline Tobin, co-authors of the book Hidden in Plain View: The Secret Story of Quilts and the Underground Railroad. She was also the keeper of stories in the African Tradition. When a quilt with these patterns was put out to be aired, the hidden message was that wagons (Wagon Wheel) were headed north, to stay close to the mountains (Bear’s Paw) until you get to Cleveland, Ohio (Crossroads).
Tumblr media
Above: The Wagon Wheel Block Pattern is believed to have been used historically as a code for the Underground Railroad.
Christine also remembers her grandmother telling her that the colours used in the quilt would indicate whether you would be traveling in a box in the wagon or traveling under the wagon. According to Dr. Dabard, Ozella Williams also mentions the importance of colour in the quilts but did not share examples of how the colours were used. It must be noted that there has been some controversy on the topic of quilts and the role they played in the Underground Railroad. It is not surprising as there is little physical evidence since the making of these quilts was part of a covert operation. Only the stories passed down from generation to generation provide us with a glimpse of this practice. As more of these quilt stories surface, these overlapping oral histories much like the story passed down from Lossie to Christine in the late 1960s, will be hard to ignore.
The Lossie Lane quilt pattern reflects an earlier history of the Underground Railroad while the quilt itself embodies the friendship of two women, two friends, both early Black settlers, who left one home behind on their own terms to make their way to a new home on the Canadian prairies, surviving harsh winters and sometimes harsh words.
Join me next time as we discover Alberta’s history…one quilt at a time.

IS THIS ART?
Countless figures throughout history have tried to explain this incredibly complex question: What is art? And more importantly, what isn’t art?
But still the institutions have no real answer, no common ground upon which they could define a normative of what defines art. Brut art is a problem, so are other outsider artists, and home schooled creatives that defy or just never become part of the institutional system.
It’s the carpenters that put more than the usual love and attention to detail in building their “consumer objects”. It’s the iPhones and iPads and other designer products that always walk the thin line between art and function.
Then you have others that do not agree with the institutional idea that one needs to even be part of the system to be considered an artist. You only need to have ideas and communicate them with the world via your production.
And in the philosophy of aesthetics — the field that studies this question ontologically — there is even more confusion. A materialist philosopher that believes all reality is only material and no immaterial reality can ever exist, will tell you art is pure matter, pure reciprocity between the object and its perceiver.
But they might also say that art doesn’t even need spectators to exist — like the whole status of art is somehow imbued inside the object that it is representing. Almost comically, some believe art is a magical aura (but of course physical, never metaphysical or non-material) that lives in an object, a special part — almost like an extra organ of the body of that object — that pumps pure artistic energy through it and makes us instantly experience art, if we indeed are knowledgable and receptive enough to perceive it.
But it’s all a load of incoherent and over-theorised bull if you ask me.
For me, all of this began with Descartes, when he decided to divide reality into two connected but distinct realities: the material and immaterial world.
There are even jokes about how the common person in the street is always a cartesian — a follower of Descartes — even if they themselves don’t know it; all average people believe in a body and in a soul as two distinct entities.
Now, I won’t go into the fallacies of such beliefs too much as this is an art channel not a philosophy discussion, but just to give a bit of context, I’d like to present three interesting and extremely precise arguments for the contrary — that art is not an object, but an experience.
Because if art is an experience, we surely can come to understand that truly it is impossible to create a functional theory, a list of checkboxes that anything considered art has to tick to really become art, or even fine art.
The first is by Thomas Nagel, the author of the story titled What It Is Like To Be A Bat, who posed an interesting proposition:
While humans can understand and imagine the behaviours of creatures, in this case a bat; merely being able to imagine how it would feel to be able to fly, navigate by sonar, hang upside down and eat insects, would never really be the same as a bat’s perspective.
Nagel claims that even if we were able to gradually turn into bats (think Kafka, but more uplifting), our brains would not have been wired as a bat’s from birth; therefore, we would only be able to experience the life and behaviours of a bat, rather than their mindset.
To behave as something isn’t equal to being something, regardless of how much it looks, swims and quacks like a duck, the shocker is, it might just be a rubber ducky.
And this goes for our language and communication problem too; I could paint a picture of an apple being picked by a woman somewhere in a forest. Some would see a nice lady picking apples, others would see the highly complex concept of Ancestral Sin. Same painting, same communication, immensely different results.
The next story, written by Frank Jackson is also about a woman who’s life is changed because of an apple — not because of eating it but merely by looking at it! Titled What Mary Didn’t Know, it describes a very curious lady who loved natural sciences — the field of colour theory especially.
She knew everything there was to know about colours; their wavelengths, the numerous psychological effects colours have on us, the various types of receptors that are utilised in our bodies to see them … just about everything. But she had one issue. She had been educated about all of this in a black-and-white room.
Black-and-white books, TV screens, and furniture — for some weird reason even Mary herself is black-and-white, but it is a story and if it was OK for Little Red Riding Hood to be red, I guess Mary can be colourless too.
So Jackson argued: Even though Mary had all the same information about colours that we do, she had never really experienced them and was therefore missing one crucial piece of information; one important bit of quaila, as philosophers like to call these magical bits of subjective experience, namely actually seeing red.
Jackson proposed that when Mary stepped out of her room and saw a red, juicy apple, she not only saw colour for the first time, she in fact learned something new. Something that she couldn’t have learned through any text book or black-and-white YouTube video.
She gained a new emotional and preceptorial experience — seeing red. (Remember all those people who told us that we can’t learn everything from books, well they were right in a way!)
And the last, and my personal favourite story curiously also evolves around red (philosophers love it for some reason). One of the greatest minds of the 21st century, John Searle wrote a wonderful tale about a talking room.
Titled The Chinese Room, this wonderful tale of speaking Asian walls stirred the lines of cognitive scientists when first presented in 1980. It describes a room, where one would input a piece of written-down information — be it a question, a statement or just a remark about the weather — and the room, after a period of time, would answer back. All in Chinese for some weird reason, probably because Searle himself said he’s awful at speaking Mandarin (The man speaks more than 6 languages fluently though!).
Well, the room wasn’t some magical artefact from a forgotten time, it was operated by one person. And the interesting fact was, that parson had no idea how to speak or write Mandarin. What he did have though was an assortment of instructions and guidelines on what to do and a giant library of cards with Chinese signs, decorating the walls of the room.
Whenever text was slid through the opening in the main wall, he would open the instruction books at the appropriate page depicting the combination of symbols (he was obviously really efficient at what he did and compensated generously for his job, probably owned a villa and a few Ferraris too).
After locating the right page in the manual, he would then find the appropriate cards on the shelves of the room, align them in the order depicted in the instructions and return the answer back though the slit in the wall. And the person on the outside would be absolutely amazed of how wonderful a computer this contraption was!
But the point of Searle’s work wasn’t to explain away computers by using miniature librarians living in our processors and memory units, he wanted to point out a simple yet profound truth about communication, computation and the mind. One that we have heard twice before, albeit in different iterations and with slightly different points.
Syntax (that is the assortment of signals; be it voice signals, written words or electric currents going to the processors of our computers) does not equal semantics (that is the name we give to meaning; the meaning of a word, a picture, a sign … anything that has some symbolical value to anyone).
The only true way to experience art is to, well, experience it. It’s impossible to not experience something if we wish to even try to comprehend it, let alone understand fully what it is about.
It’s like dreaming about something you have never experienced — I know, dreams almost never look like reality, but to be honest, our dreams don’t just appear as a beam of light from god or some bored alien on Mars that decided to give us a transcendental experience because we’re the chosen one to guide human kind into onto the next level of existence.
It’s all just pieced together by everything we experience during our waking days. Every bit of information was consciously or unconsciously experienced and internalised. It’s the same with art.
You need to be present, you are indeed the key to the question of: What art is? Without anyone to view the Mona Lisa, there is no art, just a peculiar object.
Because to know what art is, we also need to know what art isn’t.
But when does art stop to be? Or what if it never even become perceivable to us as art?
In the moment where there are no more men, no more women, and no more children.
And what happens to art then?
It is, like all that is created from an ego, bound to its creator. When he perishes, so does the essence of all his children, leaving behind a heap of empty material shells. But the intricate architectural dams of beavers, the beautiful patterns of various animals and the chirping and poems of all the beautifully performing singing birds. These don’t perish.
Even if there is no man to hear the song, see the pattern and enjoy the complexity of animal life and their creations they still serve an immediate function.
If there is a female Nightingale around, the song is heard, if there are beavers, they will enjoy and understand the dams and the tigers will comprehend their intricate skin patterns — each species forming its own personal language.
And when they’re gone, so are all their features, all their creations.
And you know why?
Because even if today the thought of a non-sociocentric universe is impossible for most, some things in the world actually weren’t made by us. Neither to amuse or to teach. And because of that, they can last quite a bit longer than our concept of art ever will.
Art is an experience, not an object. But it isn’t only a material experience — and no, I’m not saying it’s magic that makes us live and die, because the last time I checked nobody wrote Emet on my head and magically made me a real boy the way the golem becomes alive in Jewish folklore.
But the point to take home is, the more you know, the more you understand about the world around you, the more things will give you the same experience of art, of the sublime.
Because while surely not any object can produce the same power of artistic pleasure — for me it’s a mid-late Rothko painting, for you it might be a conceptual piece with hay and neon or a realistic portrait of Loui XV or just a nice handmade drawing of your child about how much they love you.
The object is only as important as our understanding of it. That’s why learning is paramount. To be a good artist, and even a good spectator we need to constantly expand our horizons. Because the day we stop learning is the day we create a canon in our life.
And as with every determinate belief that only so and so is an artist and the others are imposters, we inevitably become blind to the ineffable vastness of what art really is.
Art is everything. But to the inexperienced and blind, it is less than nothing, because even nothing takes something form us, whereas a foreign object to a closed mind doesn’t even register. It is like it never even existed.
So to truly experience reality — at least a much of it as we possibly can — we need to stay humble, open and childlike in our awe towards the world. If nothing else, we owe it to either God or our parents or ourselves or just to the lovely abyss that the nihilists of us enjoy staring down.
We owe it to whatever makes us stand-up in the morning to give everything the world has to offer a chance. Maybe we will find a new thing we like, but it’s much more likely we’ll discover a previously completely hidden part of reality that was really just hiding in plain sight.
What is art then?
Everything for those of us that aren’t afraid to look.

Celebrate Legalization with These Infused Canadian Sweets
These layered bars made their debut in a 1950s cookbook from the Vancouver Island city of Nanaimo. They’ve been growing in popularity ever since. (Photos by Mitch Mandell)
GNARLY NANAIMO BARS
Crust
2 tbsp. cannabis-infused butter (melted)
2 tbsp. butter (melted)
5 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa
1 egg
2 cups graham cracker crumbs
1/4 cup sugar
1 cup flaked coconut (sweetened or unsweetened)
1/2 cup walnuts or pecans, finely chopped
 Filling
1/4 cup instant vanilla pudding mix
1/4 cup milk
1 cup butter (softened)
4 cups confectioner’s sugar
1 tsp. vanilla extract
Icing
1 1/4 cups chocolate chips
1/3 cup heavy cream
Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly grease a 9-inch square baking pan. Place all of the crust ingredients in a food processor bowl and pulse until thoroughly combined. Press the mixture in an even layer in the bottom of the prepared pan. Bake for 10 minutes. Let cool completely before proceeding. In a small bowl, stir together the pudding mix and milk. In a large bowl, use an electric mixer and beat the softened butter until light and fluffy. Add vanilla and pudding/milk mixture until smooth. Slowly add confectioner’s sugar until smooth. Use a rubber spatula to smooth the filling over the cooled crust. Chill for at least an hour. Prepare icing by combining the chocolate chips and cream in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir constantly until chocolate is melted and mixture is smooth. Spread icing over chilled bars. Chill until cold, then cut into squares. Store covered in the refrigerator up to a week or wrap individually and freeze for longer storage. Makes 18 bars.
Classic Butter Tarts date back to the pioneers who settled the Canadian prairies. This maple-enhanced version gives a nod to Canada’s east coast.
BLAZED BUTTER TARTS
Crust
2 1/2 cups flour
2 tbsp. sugar
1 tsp. salt
1/4 cup cannabis-infused butter (cold)
3/4 cup butter (cold)
1/3 cup ice water
 Filling
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup butter (melted)
3/4 cup real maple syrup
2 eggs (beaten)
2 tsp. apple cider vinegar
1 tsp. maple or vanilla extract
Mix flour, sugar and salt in a food processor bowl. Cut cannabutter and butter into small chunks, add to the processor and pulse 8 to 10 times. Add ice water a few tablespoons at a time until the dough just holds together; don’t overmix. Shape dough into a disk, wrap in Saran and chill for at least an hour. Place chilled dough on a lightly floured surface (or between two sheets of plastic wrap) and press to about 1/3-inch thickness. Use the bottom of a glass to cut out 12 rounds (a little larger in circumference than the size of a muffin tin cup). Gather scraps and re-roll as needed, trying to use up all the dough. Press the dough circles into the bottom and up the sides of 12 muffin tin cups. Chill for at least 30 minutes. While crusts are chilling, preheat oven to 400°F. Prepare filling by stirring together the brown sugar and melted butter until well combined. Add maple syrup, eggs, cider vinegar and extract; beat well so mixture stays emulsified. Divide the filling between the prepared chilled crusts, filling them to about a 1/4-inch from the top. Bake for 10 minutes, then reduce temperature to 350°F and bake until pastry is golden brown and filling is starting to set, about 10-12 more minutes. Let cool completely before removing tarts from the muffin tin and serving. Makes 12 tarts.
Named for Canada’s national animal, you’ll find variations of these oval-shaped donuts throughout the country.
BODACIOUS BEAVER TAILS
Dough
2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
1 package (2 1/2 tsp.) active dry yeast
1/4 cup warm water
1/2 cup milk (warmed)
2 tbsp. cannabis-infused butter (melted and slightly cooled)
1 egg
2 tbsp. sugar
1/2 salt
1/2 vanilla
3 cups vegetable oil
Topping
3/4 cup sugar
1 tbsp. cinnamon
Mix water, milk, yeast and 1 tsp. of sugar in mixer bowl. Let sit for about 10 minutes or until foamy. Warm the water and milk to just above lukewarm in order for the yeast to grow; too hot or too cold, and this recipe won’t work. Add cannabutter, sugar, salt, vanilla and egg. Using the mixer’s dough hook, add flour and mix until the dough no longer sticks to the sides of the bowl. Increase mixer speed to knead dough for about 5 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic. If dough is sticky, add a little extra flour. Transfer to a lightly oiled bowl and cover with a clean kitchen towel. Let rise until it doubles in size, about one hour. Punch down dough and transfer to a lightly floured surface. Cut into eight equal-sized pieces and shape so that they’re oblong. Use a rolling pin to flatten and roll out each piece of dough into an oval. Use a knife to score a crisscross pattern in the top of the dough. Transfer donuts to a lightly floured baking sheet, cover with a kitchen towel and let rise for 30 minutes. Mix cinnamon and sugar together in a bowl. Fill large skillet with 2 inches of oil and heat to 350°F or until a small bit of dough dropped in the oil floats to the surface sizzling. Keep an eye on the oil during the cooking process and be sure to lower the temperature if it starts to smoke. Fry each tail for about 30 seconds per side or until golden brown. Coat with cinnamon/sugar mix. Serve immediately. Makes 8 beaver tails.
Canada produces 71% of the world’s pure maple syrup. No tribute to Canadian sweets would be complete without maple candy.
MARIJUANA MAPLE CANDY
1/2 cup pure maple syrup
1/4 cup heavy cream
1 tbsp. cannabis-infused butter
Combine syrup and cream in a small saucepan. Add butter and cook over high heat. Make sure to not stir it. Clip a candy thermometer to the side of the pan (it shouldn’t touch the bottom of the pan). Cook, again without stirring, until the mixture reaches 235°F. The mixture will be deep amber and form a soft ball when a little is dropped in a glass of cold water. Gently pour the hot mixture into a medium bowl, taking care to avoid splattering. Beat until smooth with an electric mixer. Roll the mixture into a ball and place between 2 pieces of parchment paper. Using a rolling pin, press to about 1/4-inch thickness. Place on a baking sheet and chill for about 15 minutes. Cut into squares or, for a more decorative look, use cookie cutters to make shapes. Store covered in the refrigerator. Makes 4 servings.
(function($){ function bsaProResize() { var sid = "12"; var object = $(".bsaProContainer-" + sid + " .bsaProItemInner__img"); var animateThumb = $(".bsaProContainer-" + sid + " .bsaProAnimateThumb"); var innerThumb = $(".bsaProContainer-" + sid + " .bsaProItemInner__thumb"); var parentWidth = "772"; var parentHeight = "105"; var objectWidth = object.width(); if ( objectWidth < parentWidth ) { var scale = objectWidth / parentWidth; if ( objectWidth > 0 && objectWidth != 100 && scale > 0 ) { animateThumb.height(parentHeight * scale); innerThumb.height(parentHeight * scale); object.height(parentHeight * scale); } else { animateThumb.height(parentHeight); innerThumb.height(parentHeight); object.height(parentHeight); } } else { animateThumb.height(parentHeight); innerThumb.height(parentHeight); object.height(parentHeight); } } $(document).ready(function(){ bsaProResize(); $(window).resize(function(){ bsaProResize(); }); }); })(jQuery); (function ($) { var bsaProContainer = $('.bsaProContainer-12'); var number_show_ads = "0"; var number_hide_ads = "0"; if ( number_show_ads > 0 ) { setTimeout(function () { bsaProContainer.fadeIn(); }, number_show_ads * 1000); } if ( number_hide_ads > 0 ) { setTimeout(function () { bsaProContainer.fadeOut(); }, number_hide_ads * 1000); } })(jQuery);
This old-fashioned dish of fluffy dumplings steamed in sweet blueberry sauce originated in the Maritime Provinces. Its unusual name supposedly comes from the sound the biscuits make while steaming in the sauce.
BLUNT BLUEBERRY GRUNTS
Sauce
4 cups blueberries (fresh or frozen)
1/4 cup water
2 tbsp. lemon juice
2/3 cup sugar
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
Dumplings
2 cups flour
1/4 cup sugar
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 cup cannabis-infused butter (cold)
1 cup milk
Combine blueberries, sugar and water in a large cast-iron skillet and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer and cook until blueberries have softened and mixture resembles whole-fruit jam, which takes about 10 minutes. Reduce heat to warm and add lemon juice and cinnamon. Prepare dumplings by combining flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in a food processor bowl. Pulse about 10 times until butter is evenly incorporated. Remove to a mixing bowl and stir in milk until just combined. Increase heat under the blueberry pan to medium. Drop spoonfuls of dough into the simmering fruit. Cover and simmer for about 15 minutes without lifting the lid. Serve warm as is or with whipped cream or ice cream. Makes 12 servings.

5 Apps for Teaching Your Child to Tell Time
How hard can it be to learn how to tell time?
For some kids, it’s a difficult concept to grasp. After all, time itself is an abstract concept.
It’s even harder to teach someone how to tell time, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Technology makes teaching how to tell time a breeze.
Let’s look at five apps for teaching your child to tell time.
Jungle Time
As you’d expect, Jungle Time teaches children how to tell time by using engaging jungles animals. When the learner gets the answer correct, the clock face responds with a roar or a smile. This app is a multi-lingual and highly interactive tool for teaching time in 12-hour and 24-hour formats.
Jungle Time has earned recognition from Parenting Magazine, Apple, and the New York Times, and Common Sense Media has given it a 5-star rating. This app is from Jungle Education, a company making iOS apps for iPhones, iPads and iPod Touch. It is $2.99.
Tic Toc Time
In Tic Toc Time, a family of beavers teaches time in series of scaffolded lessons. Learners must unlock the lessons in order before completing the series and moving on. The app incorporates day and night in the graphics by showing patterns of sun and shadow to help children learn how to tell time.
Best of all, the app offers a secure gaming environment. Children won’t be asked to make purchases or travel to other sites during play. This Android app is available in eleven languages, and you can purchase it for $4.49.
Todo Telling Time
The app teaches time and also tells the days and months. Learners will see the changes in the sky as the sun and the moon move across it. The app will also help you teach your child about developing a schedule and sticking to it, and the content is aligned to the Common Core Standards. It’s an excellent choice for kids with learning differences.
The app is the “Best Design Winner at the 2013 Launch Education Conference,” and the company has been recognized by Mashable as a pioneering startup for kids.  Produced by Enuma, Inc, the app costs $4.99 and is available for iPhone and iPad.
Quick Clocks
When reinforcement of learning concepts is vital, try Quick Clocks. This app is clean and straightforward, and its beauty lies in its simplicity. Learners work through three skills levels as they try to beat their previous scores when telling time in 12-hour and 24-hour formats, as well as digital and analog time.
