Apep
Other names: Apepi, Aapep, ꜥꜣpp(y) *ʻAʼpāp(ī); Ⲁⲫⲱⲫ Aphōph or Apophis, Ἄποφις Ápophis, Rereki
Parents:Neith (in some myths), Waters of Nun
Siblings:Ra, Serket
Symbols:Red, Black, Sometimes green, Serpent, Dragon, Lizard, Fire, Water
Domain:Underworld
Powers:Chaos, Destruction
Apep was the ancient Egyptian deity who embodied chaos (ı͗zft in Egyptian) and was thus the opponent of light and Ma'at (order/truth). He appears in art as a giant serpent. Apep was first mentioned in the Eighth Dynasty, and he was honored in the names of the Fourteenth Dynasty king 'Apepi and of the Greater Hyksos king Apophis.
Tales of Apep's battles against Ra were elaborated during the New Kingdom. Storytellers said that every day Apep must lie below the horizon and not persist in the mortal kingdom. This appropriately made him a part of the underworld. In some stories, Apep waited for Ra in a western mountain called Bakhu, where the sun set, and in others, Apep lurked just before dawn, in the Tenth region of the Night. The wide range of Apep's possible locations gained him the title World-Encircler. It was thought that his terrifying roar would cause the underworld to rumble. Myths sometimes say that Apep was trapped there, because he had been the previous chief god overthrown by Ra, and had been imprisoned.
The Coffin Texts imply that Apep used a magical gaze to overwhelm Ra and his entourage. Ra was assisted by a number of defenders who travelled with him, including Set and possibly the Eye of Ra.Apep's movements were thought to cause earthquakes, and his battles with Set may have been meant to explain the origin of thunderstorms. In one account, Ra himself defeats Apep in the form of a cat.
What few accounts there are of Apep's origin usually describe as being born from Ra's umbilical cord.
Rituals Ancient Egyptian priest of Ra performed
In an annual rite called the Banishing of Chaos, priests would build an effigy of Apep that was thought to contain all of the wickedness and darkness in Egypt, and burn it to protect everyone from Apep for another year.
The Egyptian priests had a detailed guide to fighting Apep, referred to as The Books of Overthrowing Apep (or the Book of Apophis, in Greek). The chapters described a gradual process of dismemberment and disposal, and include:
⬩Spitting Upon Apep
⬩Defiling Apep with the Left Foot
⬩Taking a Lance to Smite Apep
⬩Fettering Apep
⬩Taking a Knife to Smite Apep
⬩Putting Fire Upon Apep
──────⊰Types of practitioners⊱──────
Anticosmic
Anti-Cosmic Satanism, also known as Chaos-Gnostic Satanism and Anti-Cosmic Gnosticism, is a belief system that believes that the Demiurge (i.e. Yahweh, God, Jehova, Allah, etc.) imprisoned humans with Cosmic Chains, holding us back from our true freedom in Chaos and Limitlessness. It believes that through the liberation of our mortal chains, we will once more return to Tohu/Ain - nothingness
-Depends on the practitioners definition.
Some practioners may simply not identify with satanism and may just be anticosmic.
A practitioner may choose to work with Apep as a representation of chaos or work with their "anticosmic" aspects. Seeing Ra as a version of the Demiurge
Draconic
Draconic magic is the practice of working with dragons. One may choose to work with Apep as him representing a dragon of chaos. In some books these dragons are said to be the color black and represent chaos. Depending on the practitioner they may not see chaos dragons as bad or malicious beings but a being that existing balance to the universe.
Draconian
Draconian magic is, by definition, magic fuelled by the symbolism and energies of dragons. Although today dragons tend to be relegated to fantasy novels (usually trilogies, of course) or fantasy cinema, their mythological roots are deep and dark.
Some may work with Apep symbolically or not as a representation of chaos and transformation.
General Kemetics
When it comes to Kemeticism like any other religion or practice can be very individual to each practitioner. While a lot of Kemetics don't like Apep for the reason that most see him as a destructive force of Isfet that destroys Ma'at. Some practitioners revere and respect Apep for what ever reason it may be. People have different views on chaos. Chaos being a part of nature and some may be practitioners of chaos. Like any other deity people will have different views on them and wether they like or dislike them. In general I think it's important to not discriminate or harass/attack people who have different views than you. You may be able to get along with them you may not.
*For the general Kemetic practitioner who don't work with Apep you can check out the other posts on the Kemetic pantheon*
──────In Workings⊱──────
Enn:Ayer serpente Apep
Offerings: Dragons Blood, Gold, Frankincense, Myrrh, Red or black candles, Cobra or dragon statue
*Please know basic protections and energy work before attempting any deity work.*
*It is important to note that everyone's experiences are different and will work with spirits for different reasons. Some people may like a spirit while others will not and that's okay. Ask these spirits what they will work with you on as well as ask them if they can help you with whatever it is you need.*
Ways of honoring or working with/worshiping Apep.
Altar
Create an altar/sacred space for rituals/workings or offerings to Apep.
⬩Altar cloth
⬩Black, red, or gold candles (you can use any color)
⬩Incense and an incense burner
⬩Statues of a serpent or dragon

Anticosmic rituals
⬩For the Anticosmic practitioner. Ways of honoring Apep may include. Understanding the place of chaos within the practitioners Anticosmic faith. A practitioner may take the *Banishing of Apep/Smiting of Apep* mentioned above and replace Apep with Ra while adding their own portion of the ritual.
Some may view Ra as the Demiurge
Draconian rituals
Dragons Rouge-Beasts of Watery Abyss
*A word of caution please be careful performing any ceremony from any piece of literature or one made by another person. Invocations mean invoking a spirit within you*
The Ceremony of Apep
Envision the sun disappearing behind the horizon, in the jaws of the Serpent- Dragon of the Underworld. While focusing on this vision, start vibrating the mantra: "Lepaca Apep'. When you feel the atmosphere around you is changing and becomes tense, face the direction of west and begin the
ceremony
Melez!
I, (magical name), invoke Apep, demonic Serpent of the Underworld!
Every day you devour the sun on its journey through the sea of night and fight the gods of light.
Ruler of the seventh hour of the soul's descent into Amenti!
You transform the sunlight into the void of the Black Sun,
Your blood paints the sky red.
I invoke you! Come forth at my calling!
I seek to unite with your force.
To rest in your coils
To pass the land of the dead that is your kingdom.
Come to me. demon of waters and fire!
Lord of life behind the veil of death!
Rise out of the infernal abyss and embrace me with your coils!
Apep! Apepi! Aapep! Apofis! Set! Tyfon!
I summon you in the name of Darkness and Light, Fire and Water, which are
your essence! Hear my calling and rise from the abyss of the Underworld, from the underground land of Amentil
Lepaca Apep!
Lepaca Apofis!
Lepaca Drakon!
May this calling shakes the deepest pits of hell!
Ho Drakon Ho Megas!
Invision that you are on a voyage on a solar barque through an underground river. It gets darker and darker around you. Suddenly Apep appears in front of you. He drinks all water up and swallows the barque. You are now inside of him. Feel how you become one with the Serpent. Inflame yourself in the power of magic that rises in you. You are the unity of shadow and light, life and death. You shine with the light that illuminates the void and the darkness of the abyss. Gradually you are filled up with divinity. Meditate upon this feeling.
When you feel that it is time to end the meditation, close the ceremony with a careful banishment.
Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn
The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn is an occult group formed in England in the late 19th century. It was a magical order influenced by the Freemasons and occult Hermetic mysticism. The Freemasons are a famous secret society, and all three of the Golden Dawn's founders were Freemasons. Hermeticism is based on the supposed writings of the Greek god Hermes and Toth, the Egyptian equivalent of Hermes.
The formula IAO
This formula is the principal and most characteristic formula of Osiris, of the Redemption of Mankind. "I" is Isis, Nature, ruined by "A", Apophis the Destroyer, and restored to life by the Redeemer Osiris.
But before entering into the details of "I.A.O." as a magick formula it should be remarked that it is essentially the formula of Yoga or meditation; in fact, of elementary mysticism in all its branches.
In beginning a meditation practice, there is always
If not, one is not working properly.
a quiet pleasure, a gentle natural growth; one takes a lively interest in the work; it seems easy; one is quite pleased to have started. This stage represents Isis. Sooner or later it is succeeded by depression --- the Dark Night of the Soul, an infinite weariness and detestation of the work. The simplest and easiest acts become almost impossible to perform. Such impotence fills the mind with apprehension and despair. The intensity of this loathing can hardly be understood by any person who has not experienced it. This is the period of Apophis.
It is followed by the arising not of Isis, but of Osiris. The ancient condition is not restored, but a new and superior condition is created, a condition only rendered possible by the process of death.
The Alchemists themselves taught this same truth. The first matter of the work was base and primitive, though "natural". After passing through various stages the "black dragon" appeared; but from this arose the pure and perfect gold.
Even in the legend of Prometheus we find an identical formula concealed; and a similar remark applies to those of Jesus Christ, and of many other mythical god-men worshipped in different countries.

Hello, first of all I want to say that I loved Temple of Endless Night. The writing and the horror aspects were well-writen and I enjoyed the differente perspective between the all the companions character. Now something I wanted to ask is related to a certain comment on Apepi route. What would the ROs think of having children with the MC in the future?.Thank you for writing this amazing game.
Hi there, Anon!
Thank you for these kind words! I'm glad you enjoyed the game, and sorry for replying soooo late.
As for Apepi, he did joke about having kids with the MC in one of the more...physical scenes, didn't he? Well, he would definitely be open to it, and as for what would come out of that...it's impossible to say.
Your character is human, and Apepi is...definitely not.
This could lead to some very interesting outcomes, though I doubt it would be anything that could put you in danger.
Oh, and your gender really wouldn't matter. Apepi is inventive enough that he'd be able to make things work, and you'd have biological kids. Don't ask me how, though. That would be NSFW!
Thank you for the ask! 💛

asteroid Aphophis (99942)
apep, the destroyer (asteroid 99942)
Tumblr media
Apep, also referred to as Apepi, Apopis, Rerek, Apophis, etc., was the greatest foe of the sun god Ra. Apep is often depicted as a demon of chaos in the skin of a serpent. Which is contradictory to Egyptian belief because oftentimes snakes were symbols of divinity and royalty. However, Apep was threat to the world of the living and the realm of the gods as he often attacked Ra when he brought forth day light (this is how Egyptians rationalized solar eclipses - Apep swallowed the boat of Ra). By attempting to stop the day, he also attempted to stop time. Ironically, of all the people to help stop Apep, it was Set who rode with Ra in the mornings at the bow of the ship in order to stab Apep with his spear. IN MY OPINION Apophis in your chart can represent a) what is outside of your control, b) where there is evil/chaos in your life, and/or c) who tries to stop you or disrupt your peace.

i encourage you to look into the aspects of apophis along with the sign, degree, and house placement. for the more advanced astrologers, take a look at the persona chart of apophis!

I have two questions, sorry if they're stupid haha I'm new to this. I'm thoroughly enjoying reading the newbie guides and I thank you for writing them or for linking to them. First: what does Kemeticism think of reincarnation? Second: if Ap/ep or A/popis is bad, then why was a pharaoh named that?
Alison Roberts lays out a whole thing in her book "my heart, my mother" that supports the idea of reincarnation being a viable interpretation of certain aspects of AE religion.
TL;DR: most ppl think its possible, there is historical evidence to suggest that the idea may have been something egyptians supported.
regarding "apepi", it's hard to find much information on the guy. I think the timeframe in which he ruled is important to consider. he ruled during an intermediate period, specifically when the Hyksos were around, and i would expect that this could have shifted ideas around a/pep and isfet depending on where you stood with the Hyksos.
I also think its worth mentioning that none of his crown names appear to have any relations to a/pep in them. I'm still not entirely sure what hte context of the specific name of "apepi" is, but he certainly took really common "omg i love re praise re and re" sorts of prenomens. It suggests to me that aligning yourself with a/pep was just not something you'd really want to do on that level, regardless of the contexts of his given name.
it's definitely interesting, and its a shame we don't have more info as to why. i don't think it really changes the fact that the egyptians largely viewed a/pep as bad, though. the relationship btwn ma'at and isfet (and as a result, a/pep) is nuanced, and there are a lot of blurred areas btwn what is ma'at and what is isfetian, so idk. it just doesn't really change much for me to find out one dude in all of AE history was like "imma be called apepi"

Brazil Doctors and Entities Will Maintain Cannabidiol Prescription despite Council of Medicine Veto
A Resolution of the Council of Medicine has made the use of medical cannabis more restrictive
Tumblr media
Founder of Apepi (Association to Support Research and Patients of Medicinal Cannabis), lawyer Margarete Brito went this Monday (17) to the institution's social networks in order to reassure families and patients currently under treatment with cannabidiol (CBD). The reason for concern is the resolution of the CFM (Federal Council of Medicine) that has made the prescription of medicinal Cannabis even more restrictive in relation to the previous standard, from 2014.
"I'm here to say that this will not affect the distribution of Apepi oils or our commitment to our partner doctors," said Brito.
Published last Friday (14), resolution 2,324/22 restricts the prescription of cannabidiol to the treatments of very specific types of epilepsies in children and adolescents "refractory to the conventional therapies in Dravet and Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome and Tuberous Sclerosis Complex".
However, currently, there are recommendations for the use of CBD and other cannabis derivatives in the treatment of more than 20 medical conditions, including chronic pain, fibromyalgia, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and depression. Prescription occurs in an "off-label" mode — the physician assesses the risk-benefit and assumes responsibility for the prescription.

Lore: The Hyksos Sisterhood
Outside the Campaign
So, the Hyksos were a cultural group that invaded Egypt's Lower Kingdom during the 12-13th dynasty (c.19th-16th century BCE). The 3rd century BCE Greek-Egyptian historian Manetho described the Hyksos as an oppressive invasion force from the Levantine region but modern historians and archaeological evidence tends to argue they were a slow immigration of Caananite origin that culminated in the first "foreign rule" of Egypt by the 15th dynasty and coexisted with Egyptian dynasties during the Second Intermediate Period. Their defeat by Ahmose I is where the New Kingdom period, an Egyptian golden age, is said to have begun.
One more historical note - the list of Hyksos kings is said to include a king known as Apepi, more commonly known as Apophis, who features as a major antagonistic serpent-demon in ancient Egyptian religion, who seeks to devour the sun during its transit through the realms of the dead between sunset and sunrise. The accuracy of the name is disputed, as its recording was done by Manetho many centuries later and seems to be aligned in part with his casting of the Hyksos overall as an evil influence over the Lower and Middle Nile territories.
When picking a starting arc for my campaign, I was reminded of an ancient rec.games.dnd campaign chronicle, where the DM ran his PCs through the Slavelords series of novels for AD&D second edition. I owned this fairly well-regarded modules series set in Greyhawk but never ran it, so I heavily adapted the basic idea of it: a group of slave-taking/trading bandits mixed with a cult and some humanoid monsters. And the rest was the history of the first arc. Enjoy - Me PS. I also finally got the hang of the two different post editors so now I can embed the alt text for images properly from now on.

Who were the Hyksos?
Snake cults were an unfortunate, lingering threat to Khonsuria, stemming from the alliance with the serpentfolk of Zehir and the War of Beasts. Such cults, often directly allied or funded by the serpents or spiders, spread chaos and disorder that weakened the Pharaohs of that period, preventing full-reunification of the rebellious Lower and Upper Kingdoms. So, for the longest time, it had been assumed the Hyksos had been merely been another of these threats - a snake cult whose adherents raided Khonsurian and Baelish settlements and even aarakokra nests, sold or killed the men, and spread their twisted faith to the women, using dark magics to turn them into half-humanoid monsters, like the serpentine lamia, the winged harpies and the eel-like sirens. The name 'Hyksos' first entered the histories of Khonsuria as tales of halfling kith warning of desert raiders in the Herrenia region of the Lower Kingdom during the Second Dynasty, after the Giantwar.
Tumblr media
(Source: 'Never meant for human hands' by Mr Zarono on DeviantArt)
The Hyksos were unique among these other Zehirian snake-cults in a few ways:
Unlike other cults, their membership seemed exclusively women
Where other cults transformed volunteers and sacrificial victims into yuan-ti abominations, the Hyksos seemed to craft their 'ascendance' to a diverse number of forms, including sirens, medusae, harpies, and most commonly, the serpentine lamia.
As such a monstrous bent would indicate, their raids and dealings with outsiders often used the charms and mind-control of these creatures
The cult was exceptionally hard to locate and eradicate, while it seemed to have informants in many settlements including the holy city of Sarkhaen Tair and as far away as the Matriarchy of Lar'tya in northwestern Nerath, no central location could be identified
The cult also seemed to have as much interest in the theft of historical artifacts and knowledge as it did slaves and influence, leading a few to believe it was directed by angels of Zehir, or possibly a dragon or lich
Tumblr media

The Rise of the Hyksos
The Hyksos became more than simply a slightly strange variation on known minor threats during the fall of the Second Dynasty, when the naga Apophis had seduced many of the Pharaoh's court and the sphinx nobility to re-open the old tombs of the first Dynasty and delve once more in the magics of the Far Realm as well as seek out of the forbidden knowledge of the Primordials and even of abominable Bael Turath. Hyksos cultists used their enchantments to fuel the rage of the commoners against their rulers, while their raiders made off with hundreds of slaves bound for the markets in Djeser-al-Moqqara or the profane secrets of Achaemia.
When that Dynasty fell, first to the kinslaying of the Forgotten-King, or then the assassination of his daughter, the Hyksos formally joined forces with the Slavers Society (that a few believed they had infiltrated and controlled themselves) and conquered Rheksus - with an eye to securing access to the Great Library, its necropolis, and strategically pushing back Khonsurian scrutiny of the Sisterhood's exploration of the ruined Kovalese coastal cities. Then Vor Rukoth's emergence became known to the cult via their gnoll allies, so they made contact with the dragon Kraz-al-Manat, offering to act as matchmakers between him and Nistru in exchange for certain preferential arrangements for their own expeditions into his territory.
Tumblr media
(Source: 'The Serpent God' by Aethergee on Twitter)
Secrets of the Sisterhood
The Hyksos had indeed been one of the many serpent-cults in their beginning, but either from that outset or very early on, they fell under the power of the Night Serpent, Apophis, lesser known hero of the Giantwar, spy and advisor to Nistru the Midnight Storm, and one-time vizier (and possibly lover) of Pharaoh Abisha and her husband-son, the Forgotten-King. Apophis transformed the leaders of the cult into powerful lamia with strong warlock and sorcerous connections to darkness and illusion, and through these 'Mothers' she directed the cult both politically as well their interest in esoterica. The cult were allowed to make inferences that they had ties to Nistru as a form of boasting and to attract those who sought the dragon's favour.
As Pharaoh Haramati the First's campaign to retake the Lower Kingdom progressed, the Slavers' Society turned to the Hyksos for aid, and when Nistru first rose and attacked Rheksus in retaliation for violating her territory, it was assumed it had been through the Hyksos. Strangely, the envoys found Nistru, beyond that one devastating attack, strangely passive, and the Sisterhood noncommittal to further support or direct involvement. This was later revealed to be at the direction of Apophis, for whom the Society and their hold on Djeser-al-Moqqara seemed to have run out of value.
Tumblr media
(Source: 'Amirah the Concubine' by Chris Oduro on ArtStation)
The other "great secret" of the sisterhood was the location of their home base, their central temple, in the upper reaches of the Broken Ordnning of Storms in the Herrenia Mountains. The cult travelled to and from this former storm titan's palace via a teleportation circle whose runic name was shared only with the cults 'Mother' (leadership) and chosen 'Aunts' (very closely aligned allies, often other servants of Apophis). The lower fortress is far more commonly known, but is a deathtrap of a dungeon disconnected from the highest peaks save for a hidden stair. It was here that selected cult members would be sent to be fully indoctrinated into the inner secrets of the cult and transformed by Apophis' magics into the monster-women hybrids that held the upper ranks in the cult.
Part 2 of this Lore post will focus on what is currently known of Apophis the Night Serpent herself. - Come back tomorrow for more info.

What would the ToEN RO's ideal date with the MC look like? How would they spend their downtime with the MC?
Hi there Anon!
If you think about it, this is more than just two questions. It's more like eight. Hmm. How should I... Ah! Give me a sec so that my INTJ brain can put these answers in order.
IDEAL DATE
Menkaure: Probably something posh and extravagant. Perhaps he'd take you to some unique location with his magic? Menkaure would be one of those people who'd be more than happy to do something huge on a whim. Of course, this would apply to the sane Menkaure. If his sanity was low, he wouldn't be interested in leaving the palace.
Apepi: Something safe, probably not far from the temple. Apepi may have achieved his goal, but he will never feel truly safe. He knows that there are many people in Egypt who would love for him to die, and he would plan all your dates with this in the back of his head.
M/Z: Something connected to sport or/and adventure. Since M/Z is a mercenary, they would love for you to join them, at least from time to time. Adventure and romance don't have to be far apart, and you can probably come up with the details on your own... :)
Persenet: She'd be okay with the smallest of things. If you want to go to the market, she'll be happy to join you and make a date out of it. If you want to travel to another city, that can also work. Persenet is the easiest one to get along with when it comes to expectations.
DOWNTIME
Menkaure: In our modern times, he'd probably enjoy a spa day from time to time, but back in Egypt...Hmm. He definitely wouldn't want to do anything sporty (unlike M/Z), and neither would he want to go out of his way to get rest. Perhaps an afternoon in the palace gardens?
Apepi: He'd most likely want to spend his downtime with his nose in some old books. An alternative to that could be walking around the temple and checking on things. He has a rather obsessive mind when it comes to details. Details don't wear him out.
M/Z: Sport? Yeah, something sport-related. Or maybe adventure? It sounds strange, but M/Z doesn't see adventuring as work. They don't really see anything they do as work. As a mercenary, they just think that they're living their best life, doing what they love.
Persenet: Something that wouldn't involve people. (Other than the MC and your (potential) family.) Perhaps a nice afternoon with tea or wine? Maybe a gentle stroll outside the city walls? Something simple. Persenet loves simplicity.
Thanks for the ask! 💛

Apep
Apep, also spelled Apepi or Aapep, (Ancient Egyptian: ꜥꜣpp(y) *ʻAʼpāp(ī); Coptic: Ⲁⲫⲱⲫ Aphōph[1]) or Apophis (/əˈpoʊfɪs/;[2] Ancient Greek: Ἄποφις Ápophis) was the ancient Egyptian deity who embodied chaos (ı͗zft in Egyptian) and was thus the opponent of light and Ma'at (order/truth). He appears in art as a giant serpent. Apep was first mentioned in the Eighth Dynasty, and he was honored in the names of the Fourteenth Dynasty king 'Apepi and of the Greater Hyksos king Apophis.
