Part 1 || Part 2 || Part 3 || Part 4 || Part 5 || Part 5.5 || Part 6 || Masterlist
It was a cool morning when you waved goodbye to your mom and skateboarded towards Sakanoshita. The temperature was just right and with the weekend in full effect, the streets were bustling with families and friends enjoying their time off. You smiled to yourself as you turned the corner and cruised through different alleyways to cut the time from being on the main streets. It felt nice to finally have a clear mind and a set goal for yourself. For the longest time, it was as if the path in front of you was endless. Whenever you thought about volleyball, flashbacks of your last game constantly plagued your mind. But recently, thanks to all your new friends, your mind was filled with all the new memories you were able to make with the sport. Just like how Tanaka and Nishinoya would always fanboy over Shimizu and you would have to be the one to drag them away from her. Moments with your fellow first years: Hinata always coming into your classroom to hang out with you, Yamaguchi and Tsukishima grouping up with you during free periods to go over the class material, and Kageyama constantly asking you for critiques whenever you helped him practice with Hinata. Sugawara would always check in on you to make sure that you were keeping up with school and Daichi would check in to make sure that you were having your meals. Asahi would try his best to help you with carrying the water if Shimizu was busy with Takeda and Ukai, reassuring you that it wasn’t a hassle and that it was his way of hanging out with you during school hours.
You smiled to yourself and leaned your head back, enjoying the warm sun rays that were beaming down on you. It was a blessing in disguise to be dragged into their world, no your world, once again. You had missed the feeling of the ball in your hands and feeding off of the hunger and determination that radiated off of the players in the gym. The new found warmth you felt whenever you were with them felt like a new beginning for you. And maybe that’s what you’ve been needing for the longest time: a clean slate from your past and a fresh mind to fall in love with the sport all over again. Stretching your arms, you hummed your favorite song and smiled widely when you saw the store’s front right in front of you.
Skidding to a stop, you kicked your board into your arms before going into the store. You passed by the aisles to try and find Ukai, but he was nowhere to be found. With a shrug, you set your skateboard on top of one of the empty tables and decided to pick out some snacks.
“Oi Coach! Where are you?” you asked as you skimmed the shelves of chips in front of you.
“In the back! I’ll be right out, kid!” he yelled back.
“Osu~” you replied back and grabbed your favorite bag of chips before heading towards the refrigerated section in the front.
As you grabbed a cold bottle of Ramune, Ukai emerged from the back room and ruffled your hair.
“Thanks for coming out kid, I know this isn’t your ideal way of spending your weekend, but I needed your help with the boys.” he said as he grabbed his notebook and pen from behind the counter.
You smiled and waved it off. “It’s fine, coach. I’m glad I can help.”
The two of you sat down at the table and you set your skateboard on the floor. You leaned against the back of the chair and crossed one leg over the other as he mirrors your actions with his arms cross against his chest.
“(L/N) (F/N). Chidoriyama’s infamous female wing spiker and pinch server. Currently on hiatus due to a torn ACL.”
You chuckled and raised an eyebrow at the older man. “Yes, that is I.”
“How did you get into volleyball?”
“My dad; he used to play during his high school and university days. When I was younger, they wanted to figure out what kind of extracurricular activity to put me in. My mom put me in dance while my dad put me in volleyball. I didn’t like how stuck up the kids in my ballet class were, so I dropped it and just had more fun with volleyball.”
“And how long have you been playing?”
You grabbed your chips and opened the bag. Ukai shook his head when you offered him some and you shrugged before answering.
“Hm...probably since I was like six or seven? My dad started off with just receiving and then when I got good at that, he taught me serving before putting me in weekend classes.”
“That’s a long time kid, I’ve seen some of your plays recently and I can see you be a lot of help with the team. Well, that is until you’re ready to personally become a part of the girl’s team.”
“The girl’s team?” you asked more to yourself then towards him as you munched on some of the chips.
“C’mon, I’m assuming you’ve dreamt about making it big. It’s just a matter of time until your body is back in top shape.”
“Coach, I barely told you last night that I agreed to be manager. Let’s take it one step at a time, alright?” you laughed and he sheepishly smiled back at you.
“Yeah, you’re right, sorry I was getting ahead of myself.” Ukai laughed and then cleared his throat. “So what do you think of the boys so far?”
“Hm…” you started as you tried to gather your thoughts and opened your bottle of Ramune. “I think they’re okay so far. Some of them still need to improve on their receives, Kags and Shoyo still need to improve on their quick combo, and overall the team dynamic needs to improve. We just need to nitpick and note down the smaller aspects of it for their next training camp.”
“True, that’s what I began to notice as well. We can start off with different drills and solidify on the current struggles for now. Then after the camp we can get down to the finer details.”
You nodded your head in agreement and said, “Yeah, that sounds like a solid plan for now.”
He sighed in relief and relaxed in his chair. “Thank god you’re here, kid. It gets stressful sometimes being the only one coming up with plays.”
You laughed as Ukai’s typical grumpy face relaxed and got up to toss your trash away. “No prob, coach. Glad I can use my expertise again.”
“Ah, that reminds me, I need you to come up with different plays the boys can try out. I want to add more towards the second year since we’ve been focusing too much more with our starting lineup.” Ukai said as rested his arms behind his neck.
“You got it coach.” you smiled at him and gave him the ‘okay’ sign. He watched as you picked up your board and motioned towards the door.
“Well if that’s all you needed…”
“Ah, wait!” he said while getting up from his seat and went towards the counter. He rummaged around for a paper bag and grabbed the tongs that was hanging off the handle of the heater for his family’s infamous buns.
“Compensation for coming out today. Your snacks are also on the house.” he cheekily smiled.
You gasped and smiled excitedly, jogging towards the counter and watched him fill up the bag.
“What was your next goal if you weren’t injured?” he asked.
You played with one of the wheels of your board and pursed your lips. “I...was supposed to go to Niyama High with my libero and captain.”
“Niyama?! Why didn’t you follow through?”
Silently, you motioned towards your knee as your expression deadpanned.
“Oh, right.”
You rolled your eyes and smirked. “C’mon coach, don’t tell me you’re getting old already and having short term memory.”
He clicked his tongue and whacked you on the head with the rolled up newspaper by the cashier. You laughed and grabbed the bag he slid towards you.
“You know I’m kidding, but anyways, it’s as cliché as it can be. I needed a fresh start and Yu-nii suggested I go to Karasuno. He’d show me the ropes and I’ll be on my merry way.”
“Would you ever consider transferring back?” he asked as he lazily sat down on his chair behind the counter and took out a cigarette.
You immediately shook your head as you made your way towards the door. He lit it up and blew some out, settling into his usual routine at the store.
“Nah, the team is family now. So that means Karasuno is my home. But don’t tell the boys I told you that.” you smirked before saluting at the older man and exited the store.

Whoa, are we eschewing most of the Big Ten for once? Yep.
Despite the fact that we’ve got up to three HUGE Big Ten games to choose from this week, there’s no way that we’re picking all of them because Crow and Chief might actually rebel and go to another blog.
Here are the games we are picking, though... enjoy!
STAFF PICKS - COLLEGE FOOTBALL WEEK 9
Wisconsin @ Ohio State (-14) (O/U 50.5)
BWAAAAHAHAHAAHA! Poor Fox, they wanted to make this a super week of Sports. First the World Series, then the NFL tonight, then more WS and THEN!! Urban returns to the Shoe...too back the Fighting Illini ruined that deal! Ohio State will roll through this and it might not be pretty...I don’t think it will. Tree Seeds take this one hard! tOSU 42-20 and the over - Drew Mac
Speaking of rain, when it rains, it pours, Wisconsin. Ohio State by a lot. Ohio State 35, Wisconsin 21 - Josh Dub
Wisconsin tried to pull out just enough to win at Illinois and it back-fired. Maybe it was a letdown/look-ahead spot, but I think Ohio State does a number on this defense. They’ll hold the Buckeyes below their scoring average, and Taylor will keep things low scoring, but I think Ohio State covers late. Ohio State 31, Wisconsin 14 (OSU covers, UNDER) - James Jones
Well this thing sure looked fun this time last week. Now? Not so much. That being said, I don’t expect Ohio State to just walk all over Wisconsin because Wisconsin isn’t designed to get blown out. But 14 points is enough for me to think Ohio State covers, with the under. Ohio State 27 Wisconsin 14 - Josh Black
So this is why you crapped the bed last week Wisconsin. Looking ahead doesn’t tend to end well (and I hope another team does that this week, ahem LSU) Anyway, the Buckeyes continue to roll over teams and while Wisconsin’s defense has been great, they haven’t seen anything like Justin Fields and this Ohio State team. Bucks roll. Ohio State 41 Wisconsin 17 - Will McLaughlin
Oh Wiscy... You done got caught looking ahead haven’t ya? Well you better make it worth it. I could see this Badger D giving Justin Fields some trouble early but this Buckeye team is the best in the country for my money. It’s a low scoring battle early but a late turnover flips this & OSU covers late. OHST 28 UW 13 - AU Nerd
I think Ohio state is the most complete football team in the country. This will he closer than the experts think though. Bucks 31, Wisky 28 - Son of Crow
Two touchdowns? Man, I know that loss to Illinois was ugly, but that’s a lot of faith in Ohio State. If Wisconsin decides not to pussyfoot around and actually try to convert one of several 4th and shorts (instead of kicking short field goals), the Badgers win going away, and this is more like a 6-7 point line. That being said, Ohio State may be the best team in the country. We’ll learn a lot about them here, but I expect the Buckeyes to pull this one out. 31-24 Ohio State. - Ryan Sterritt
I know Ohio State has been good for one really terrible loss per year recently, but this won’t be it. There’s no way that Wisconsin keeps this game closer than 14 points in the second half. The Buckeyes will get up early, defense shuts down Jonathan Taylor enough to where the Badgers can’t drive, and people are even higher on OSU after this win. Buckeyes 34-16 - Jack Condon
SMU (-13) @ Houston (O/U 66.5)
Houston has been playing better but there is something about this Ponies team. I don’t think they will cover cause that’s a good number of points to lay on the road but SMU will get the W, again. SMU 42-35 and the over - Drew Mac
Lashlee forever! SMU 42, Houston 17 - Josh Dub
SMU has been excellent this year, and Houston is pseudo-tanking, but I don’t know about covering 13 on the road on a weeknight. SMU 38, Houston 31 (SMU wins, Houston covers, OVER) - James Jones
How ‘bout them Ponies? I couldn’t be happier for Rhett Lashlee, who is a great football coach and a better person. Houston is tanking 2019 and building to 2020. This SMU roster is loaded for this year to be their year. SMU 41 Houston 28 - Josh Black
The Ponies continue their undefeated season as College Football in Dallas is alive and well! Good for Rhett Lashlee to land at a program that is having as much success as it has. I watched the end of their massive comeback and Triple OT win against Tulsa a few weeks ago. As for Houston, they fired Major Applewhite because he couldn’t do better than 8-4. Well.... this year so far they are 3-4 and a mess off the field as well. Players have been asked to redshirt, including their starting QB, and Dana Holgorsen hasn’t exactly made the best first impression. Pony Up! SMU 48 Houston 23 - Will McLaughlin
Auburn should really consider bringing in this young hotshot OC to add some flair to Auburn’s offense next season.... SMU 45 HOU 21 - AU Nerd
Ponies. The Dallas jerseys are the best new Uniform in football. Smu 42, UH 20 - Son of Crow
I enjoy that there was almost assuredly a conversation about moving this game to a week night where someone proposed this be slotted in on Friday, and that person immediately being shouted down as a total idiot, because you don’t schedule anything besides high school football in Texas on a Friday night. Anyways, I like the Ponies to continue their undefeated run against the team who’s redshirting their star quarterback and playing the coaches son. 42-28 SMU. - Ryan Sterritt
SMU. 35-27. - AU Chief
I thought about watching the Pony Excess 30 for 30 the other day, and then probably watched The Fugitive (I DIDN’T KILL MY WIFE) or something like that instead. It’s a sign. There won’t be a downfall this weekend. Ponies, large. 45-24. - Jack Condon
Mississippi State @ Texas A&M (-10) (O/U 50.5)
Lord, has there been a team to fall flatter than Moo? And Rutgers wants Moorehead? If I’m a State fan, I offer to pay for the moving company. At least they figured out who the better starting QB finally was. On the other side in the Futility Bowl this year, A&M brings....well... Jimbo Fisher to the game...that’s about the only positive (and I don’t know if its positive really) I see to their team this year. I will say A&M covers but its 51/49 that it will actually happen. I just trust them a touch more than I do State...and that’s saying a lot. A&M wins and covers, 28-17 and the under - Drew Mac
Mississippi State might be a dumpster fire. Texas A&M 35, Miss St 10 - Josh Dub
MSU has finally pushed its chips on Shrader. I think he could cause A&M some trouble here. Neither team moves particularly fast, so this one should be low scoring. When opportunities are minimized, take the dog and the under. Texas A&M 23, MSU 17 (A&M wins, MSU covers, UNDER) - James Jones
Kellen Mond is not a good enough quarterback for A&M to be relevant in the SEC. Joe Moorhead is not a good enough coach for Mississippi State to be a 4-loss football team. Texas A&M 27 Mississippi State 14 - Josh Black
Great job Bulldogs, you finally started the better Quarterback. Things are bad in Starkville and I feel like it would be best for Joe Moorhead and the school to part ways after the year (Rutgers wants him badly). They face another team who has disappointed many this year in College Station. Can you imagine how bad of a loss this would be for ole Jimbo? I don’t think it will happen but you never know which Aggies team will show up. Texas A&M 21 Mississippi State 14 - Will McLaughlin
A&M tried their darndest to go on the road & lose to Ole Miss but no one out Rebels the Rebels. Mississippi State showed some early fight against LSU but just aren’t a good enough squad to string together consistent solid quarters of football. For A&M, their season really begins now. They still have UGA & LSU on the schedule but they have some time to build momentum for that wild finish. I think it’s tight early but Shrader throws a 4th qtr pick to swing this into the home team’s favor. Aggie 31 State 20 - AU Nerd
My gut tells me Aggy is going to get right in this game. And that MSU might have some quit sneaking up in them. Aggy 35, MSU 20 - Son of Crow
Ah yes, the battle of the two most disappointed fan bases in the SEC. I’m assuming this is a game that State is not playing it’s suspended players, but don’t quote me on that. I think I like Kellen Mond to have one of his good games here against a Bulldog defense that’s lost four out of five. Here’s food for thought - if State loses this game, they’ll almost assuredly be playing the Egg Bowl with bowl eligibility on the line. Not good for Moorhead in year 2. 31-17 A&M - Ryan Sterritt
I’m not sure if either of these teams are really any good. I’m sure that Mississippi State really isn’t any good. Jimbo’s gonna be reelin’ ‘em in on Saturday, and Joe Moorhead will start to see that maybe New Jersey is a better locale than Starkville (pay attention, Ryan). A&M in an easy one, 38-21. - Jack Condon
Arkansas @ Alabama (-32.5) (O/U 56.5)
The only thing that makes this one watchable is that Tua won’t see the field. uat 45 (because uat can’t kick field goals) -10 and the under - Drew Mac
What if Mac Jones has been better than Tua this whole time? Alabama 63, Arkansas 27 - Josh Dub
This line is dropping like a rock with Tua out. Arkansas is just awful, but I have a feeling Alabama just gets to a 3 score lead and works on their running game. I don’t see Arkansas scoring more in Tuscaloosa than they did against us in Fayettenam. Alabama 41, Arkansas 10 (Alabama wins, Arkansas covers, UNDER) - James Jones
Sure is tempting to take the under here with Tua being out. But with a week of getting timing down, Mac Jones shows enough to push the cover and over here. Alabama 48 Arkansas 10 - Josh Black
The preseason ends for Alabama this weekend (finally). The combined record of Alabama’s first 7 opponents: 20-30, and if you add Arkansas to the equation, the Tide’s 1st 8 opponents have a combined 22-35 record. As for Auburn’s first 7 opponents: 30-20 and including LSU Saturday, 37-20. That’s a 15 GAME DIFFERENCE! It was evident last week the drop-off from Tua to their backup QB, Mac Jones. Alabama looked vulnerable and Tennessee had many chances to make that game really really interesting. But nonetheless, a 14 point swing on a 4th and Goal play at the 1 put the end to those chances and Alabama beat Tennessee yet again. Arkansas, as we saw last week, is bad. This should be a game Alabama wins handily but if they don’t, I may actually pick LSU to win in a couple weeks in Tuscaloosa, especially if Tua’s health is still in question. Alabama 41 Arkansas 10 - Will McLaughlin
This would be downright hilarious if Bama botched this game without Tua. But that would also mean the end of the world so we wouldn’t get very long to enjoy it. Mac Jones “throws” three 60+ yard TDs by hitting that insane WR corps on three quick slants. Arkansas offense continues its ineptness though Rakeem Boyd gets 100 on the ground running right at that bammer D which irritates the little man. Bama 49 ARK 14 - AU Nerd
Alabama will have to utilize its stud runningbacks and o-line in this game. I don’t pity them one bit. Tide 51, Hogs 10 - Son of Crow
Yeah, no Tua, so I’m sure the gameplan here will be ultra vanilla. Like Bama hearkening back to the pre-Kiffin/current-UGA-playbook kind of vanilla. But... Arkansas is real bad. I’m gonna have to take the under because I can see Saban just choking the life out of the clock in the first quarter, but I think they can still cover by accident. 41-6 Tide.
P.S. I really hope Arkansas tries some other fake punt in this game and it works. - Ryan Sterritt
I mean, it took Nick Saban all of 2017 to figure out that using Tua was the right move. Maybe he’s just not a good coach. Maybe Mac Jones is going to win a Heisman only playing half the season. Playing Arkansas is a good way to start. Bama easy, Najee goes nuts. 49-14. - Jack Condon
South Carolina (-4.5) @ Tennessee (O/U 47)
This one will be fun and the SEC game I will watch outside of Auburn-LSU. Tennessee has been playing better and, if you didn’t know, South Carolina beat Georgia two weeks ago. Yeah, that really did happen, Will Muschamp beat Kirby Smart....IN ATHENS! I will be watching to see if Florida broke the Gamecocks though cause last week was close until the Gators put 2 scores up and then boom, done. Tennessee had opportunities to fight uat and did for a bit but didn’t realize you have to play the refs in Tuscaloosa as well and then tried to leap over on a QB sneak and then it was baseball time for me that Saturday night. I think Carolina wins this one but this is a complete toss up to me. Carolina wins and covers 24-17 and the under - Drew Mac
Vols take a big step towards bowl eligibility. Tennessee 21, South Carolina 17 - Josh Dub
‘Member that time Will Muschamp lost to Tennessee a head coach? No you don’t. It’s never happened. I will not watch this game. It will be bad football. South Carolina 24, Tennessee 13. (Gamecocks cover, UNDER) - James Jones
Will Muschamp has never lost to Tennessee. This game will be near unwatchable, but Carolina is the better team and is absolutely more than capable of covering. South Carolina 21 Tennessee 13 - Josh Black
This is a game I didn’t expect to be picking but it’s a pretty big one for bowl eligibility purposes. Weird saying that for a 2-5 Tennessee team but they’ve made some progress, especially in the last 2 weeks. They’ve got UAB and Missouri still on the schedule along with Kentucky and Vandy so the Vols HAVE to get this one. Meanwhile, the same can be said for South Carolina in their efforts the last 2 weeks and they could have easily knocked off Florida last week to double down on major upsets, but there were some very questionable no-calls in that one that directly costed the Roosters 14 points in an 11-point game. This one for me is honestly a toss-up, if I knew which Tennessee QB was playing, it would make my decision easier but picking the Roosters has not gone well for me so I’m going with the Vols at home. Tennessee 23 South Carolina 20 - Will McLaughlin
I recommend not watching this game. Seriously... It’s gonna be very ugly but not in like the fun, humorous way. If Brian Maurer was 100%, I think I would pick the Vols to pull the upset. But he won’t be a go. Cocks play just slightly less ugly than the Vols. SCAR 27 TEN 20 - AU Nerd
Yeesh this one is gross. I wouldn’t watch this game if I was paid to do it. Scar 17, Tenn 14 - Son of Crow
I’ll admit, I had left South Carolina for dead before the season, and especially so after losing to UNC in the opening week. They’re still only sitting at 3-4, but after beating UGA two weeks ago, they kinda hung with Florida last week? They may not be a good team, but they may be more aggressively average than I thought. In fact, Muschamp could still get this team to 7-5 this year, which would be a miracle with that roster and schedule. He’s also never lost to Tennessee. But when you put your trust in Muschamp, bad things happen (hey Survivor Pool!). I’ll hesitantly say the Cocks win this one, but I don’t like it. 21-17 USC. - Ryan Sterritt
Tennessee emptied the tank last week against Alabama. South Carolina probably feels like they left something on the field against Florida. Gamecocks. 28-20. - Jack Condon

5 Things Thing
Tagged by the one and only @five-foot-a-b1tch! (I’m stealing your number symbols, they look fancy.)
5 things I keep in my bag ① Laptop: Windows 10 Acer laptop in prime breaking down condition! This thing is a few years old. I hope it lasts until I get a new one, lol. I’m a bit attached to it, though... I have fond memories of me playing games in class when I’m supposed to be working. (I’m a high school student, okay? It’s what we all do.) ② 3DS XL: Okay, not ALL the time, but... I do bring it a lot. I take my Pokemon very seriously. All I need to do to have caught ‘em all is to finish the Alolan Dex and then gotten a Diancie. One day, I’ll be a real Pokemon master... ③  Sketchbook: I try not to think about the fact that it has my sister’s ex boyfriend’s name on it. I’m pretty sure it was his when he was in year 9 art, but... he left it here, so yoink. ④ Books: Lots of books. My bag is heavy... ⑤ Laptop charger: The battery on my laptop is warped, so the charger is like a lifeline for it. Well, it has crappy battery life, basically.
5 things I keep in my room ① Birb statues: My dad bought them for me. One of them is a macaw that’s drilled into my wall. The other is a bald eagle that’s sat on my shelf... my bird sits on the eagle, sometimes. He has no fear. ② Plush animals: Most of them are different types of birds... I have an elephant, cheetah and Fennekin one as well though. I also have a really old robotic cat toy, which has been out of battery since forever. It’s furry, though... and again, my bird likes to sit on it. I’m still a kid, so I have a bald eagle plush that I still sleep with. I love bald eagles, y’know? They’re my favourite animal. ③ Assassin’s Creed Special Edition boxes: More specifically, the Notre Dame edition of Unity and the Buccaneer edition of Black Flag. I used to be obsessed with Assassin’s Creed, but now my love for it is more nostalgia for how much I used to enjoy it. I still stand by my opinion that Connor’s the best character, though. ④ Merchandise: Of the Attack on Titan and Undertale variety. I have a Survey Corps uniform, and though... poorly made, I still very much so enjoy it, because I’m a freakin’ nerd. The Undertale merch I got a few days ago from Fangamer. It came with two shirts, one of which is too big for me, but that’s not gonna stop me from wearing it. ⑤ Feather box: I collect feathers. Most of the feathers I have in there are from my bird, since he’s... usually the bird at closest proximity to me in most hours of the day.
5 things I’ve always wanted to do with my life (oh god) ① Concept Art: Getting the obvious stuff out of the way. I enjoy digital painting moreso than doing lined art. It’s just fun to work with colours and lighting and shapes more freely. ② Animate: Probably not gonna happen... especially compared to my art skills, my animation skills are subpar (I know because I tried, I have a YouTube channel with crappy WMM animations in it), and I’m not patient enough to spend days upon days animating a 5-minute video. I have immense respect for animators. Not to mention, every good animation program costs like $500??? What the hell???? ③ YouTube personality: Again, probably never gonna happen, but I want to feel important to a wide range of people. ④ Make a game: It’s not just Undertale that makes me like Toby... Everything he says and does inspires me in some way. He’s my biggest role model at the moment, and I’ve had an idea for an original story for quite a bit. What made me sure that I wanted to do this eventually was a quote he had on his (inactive) Tumblr, when Undertale had its first Birthday. ⑤ Cosplay: Yes. 5 things I’m into  ① Attack on Titan: AoT AoT AoT AoT AoT (it’s always been my most favourite thing ever. I have a place in my heart specially dedicated to it.) ② Undertale: Coming second only to Attack on Titan. I love this game so, so much. I joined the fandom a little late but was immediately charmed by the game the moment I met Flowey. It didn’t take me long to start obsessing over it... by the time I stepped out of the Ruins, I already lost myself to this world. Look at me now. Haha. Ha. ③ osu!: osu! is an Australian-made rhythm game where you click the circles... to the beat. (No, it’s not Japanese, like I initially thought it was. It was actually made by some guy in Perth.) I’ve only been playing for about 9 months and I’m ranked 46k globally out of over 9 million players. Something about seeing you grow out your skill in such a short amount of time is so rewarding. It’s great for improving stamina in my arms (which I’ve always had trouble with, thanks to a certain disability that I was born with) and perhaps the greatest thing about this game is the culture surrounding it. There’s kind of a poetic balance between beauty and elegance, intenseness and frustration, and just... utter weirdness. I love it. ④ Touhou Project: I only recently got into it, but boy, did I get sucked into it. It’s just so damn difficult that it’s impossible not to play it over and over. And, I’ve watched Memories of Phantasm, the fanmade anime... the only good thing about it is the animation quality. And that’s not just me complaining like a hipster... it actually sucks so badly it’s funny. My favourite character is Cirno, in case anyone’s curious. ⑤ Warriors: The one and only book series that I actively follow. The writing’s horrendous in some books, but I love the ideas in it anyway. Plus, Jayfeather is to live for. My favourite book would be either Bluestar’s Prophecy, which was the first book I’ve ever read, Tallstar’s Revenge, which made me shed a manly tear at the end, or Path of Stars, which ACTUALLY made me cry, because that death scene was so emotional. I loved Gray Wing, man...
5 things on my to-do list ① Improve my art: ok. ② Get on top of my schedule: I swear I love my comics... ③ Catch ‘em all: You don’t get it... I take my Pokemon VERY seriously. ④ Actually beat Touhou 6: IT’S. HARD. ⑤ Become a 4-digit player on osu!: Because the community gives 5-digit players like me enough smack for being mediocre... 5 things you may not know about me ① Well, I guess you know NOW, but I was born with a disability. Low muscle tone, AKA Hypotonia. It’s not actually that bad, I think... it does get in the way, but it’s liveable with. ② My earliest memories involved me being a selective mute. This was when I was 4 years old. I only felt comfortable talking at home, and even then I didn’t do it much. I also had OCD, apparently, which I think I can remember a little bit of at the back of my mind. Not too sure, though. ③ I like flowers. For symbolism, partly. But picking flowers has a sort of childish innocence that appeals to me, as well. I don’t think I have a favourite flower. ④ I interacted with Markiplier before I knew who he was... Everyone else on the server at the time knew, though. I was one of the few people on who was very confused. My exact thoughts were, “Who the Hell is this loser?” I was like... 12 or 13, maybe? It was back when he still played Minecraft. And I’m preetty damn sure it wasn’t a fake, seeming as I recall him typing in the chat with words that correlated exactly to what he recorded on his first episode of Drunk Minecraft. I didn’t say anything until after he finished recording and hung out for a bit because I practically just got on the server. ⑤ I’m half Italian. Have you ever been to an Italian Christmas family reunion at midnight? Because I have. It’s loud.

2017 Through Tweets
Who would have thought that Twitter would become such an integral part of, like, the world? The President uses it to endanger the entire world and it’s possible that it might end him one day. LeBron James used it to call the President a “bum”. Reporters are using it to break stories and woman are using it to share their experiences with sexual harassment and assault. Neo-Nazis use it to organize and radicalize morons across the world. Notable people get harassed and doxxed on the platform and Twitter has done a less-than-stellar (some might even say “bad”) job at handling these things. It’s a weird time.
But what about me, Paul Nichols? What have *I* been tweeting? Well, in the past, I spent a lot of brain power trying to come up with clever and funny tweets, which had mixed results. These days, I only try to either tweet out I link to something I like or made or a quick point or observation that I thought of. This year, that meant a lot of angry tweets about Trump. I tried to include very few of those because they aren’t that interesting. I also like to live-tweet award shows. I’m only human. It’s cool to look back at what I have written over the past year because it’s the closest thing I have to a journal. Yes, very naval-gazey. This is more for me than for you anyway.
Tumblr media
First tweet of the year. Turns out buckling up doesn’t help that much when you’re in a minivan that is on fire and heading off a cliff.
Tumblr media
I just really like this tweet. Context: The previous night, I went to a get together at Dave and Buster’s with my former co-workers at Elevation Trampoline Park. Seeing people play DDR and look ridiculous while scoring a lot of points made me think of this.
Tumblr media
This tweet could either end up being genius or incredibly sad (the usual metric of my tweets). It’s just been so weird that the most conspiratorial people who love to accuse everyone else of being sneaky and maniacal are the ones actually in power now. Blaming other people for things gone wrong becomes much harder when you’re the one in charge. Let’s hope that this actually becomes true.
Tumblr media
I stand by this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really like live tweeting award shows. It’s like being at a watch party and by yourself at the same time. Oof, that’s sad. Sorry.
Tumblr media
That weird line from that weird movie finally started to make sense to me one day as I was walking back to my apartment from class one March day.
Tumblr media
“It’s my opinion!” is a rallying cry among morons of all shapes and sizes to try and absolve themselves from taken any responsibility for what they say and how it affects people. The First Amendment only protects people from getting punished by the government for expressing their opinions. Everyday citizens and private companies and corporations can respond however they want to your dumb opinions. On the other hand, Having no opinions at all makes you not only boring, but a different kind of moron who feels like they don’t need to care about anything that doesn’t directly affect them.
Tumblr media
This, in a nutshell, says a whole lot about my life.
Tumblr media
2017, though mostly terrible, has actually been an inflection point year for me, starting off with graduating from college. I had that tweet from high school saved just so I could reuse it for college (because I’m the type of person who plans out tweets years ahead. And then writes about his own tweets). I tweeted this out as I was walking to Gallagher-Iba on the OSU campus for the graduation ceremony.
Tumblr media
This was in response to Bill Maher saying “nigga” during his show. Now, I stopped watching Bill Maher back in January because he’s become increasingly insufferable and smug to me as time has gone on. If you’re not black, just air on the side of not saying nigga, it’s not that hard.
Tumblr media
Everyone needs to get some self esteem (present company included). Can you imagine how many conflicts, even on a global scale, would be avoided if people were just comfortable in their own skin and weren’t afraid to ask for help?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
June and July were hard months for me. My grandfather died in June, so my parents were in Chicago for most of those months and I was just by myself trying to get a job. I probably wrote over 30 cover letters and sent out 20 more inquires to places and, at the point of the second tweet, I had no interviews. I was pretty down on myself and really questioned whether or not it was going to happen for me (”Fun” Fact: This is literally the first time I have ever used an emoji). Looking back it was crazy because I had only been out of school for two months, but when you’re in the thick of it, it feels bad...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...but it ended up working out for me and I got a job! I started on August 28th and so far it’s been pretty good. This was another highlight in the inflection point year.
Tumblr media
I sure do tweet about opinions a lot, don’t I? Not exactly sure if I had a particular target in mind when I tweeted this, but I have a few now. In this disastrous first year of the Trump Presidency, people have started to pay attention to politics who had previously not been involved. This is generally a good thing, but it also leads to people saying things that they believe are significant, but are actually pretty pedestrian. Politicians do this a lot too, weirdly enough. In another realm, it gets really annoying when people talk about music. Hip-hop is now the most popular form of music in the world, so everyone is saying their Rap Opinions more than ever these days. It’s draining.
Tumblr media
2017 was the Nazis came back in style, which meant that all of the “good” white people had to reassure their POC friends that they were one of the good ones. It’s basically doing the absolute least to address an actual real problem just to make themselves feel better.
Tumblr media
I don’t think I’ve crossed over into full blown nihilist yet, but 2017 has brought me closer than I’ve ever been. Seeing people’s different versions of “resisting” and the mixed results that have come from that really do make me wonder if we can actually make positive change on a national and global scale. I don’t know about that, but I do know that “love” won’t be the solution. Don’t think that’s ever been the case. The only things (I think) that can make a difference these days are laws, money, and rich people’s fear of embarrassment. We’ll see.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Continuing on the nihilist tip, I’ve finally accepted the fact that politicians are, for the most part, bad people. I think I’ve known this in the back of my head, but it’s a hard thing to come to terms with. Imagine a news media that wasn’t afraid of offending politicians? They’d be getting hammered and embarrassed every day and we might even be in a better place than we are now. Politicians are just people, not superheroes. These days, they’re mostly just rich people with law degrees and blind ambition.
Tumblr media
To round out my year of self-righteous tweets, I touch on one of the Internet’s favorite activities: hating something! This tweet was in response to the Netflix movie Bright starring Will Smith as a cop and Joel Edgerton as an orc cop. Of course you’re allowed to not like things, but why waste the energy always talking about the things you hate. Just let Bright be a movie. When they put up the tweet of the screenwriter of the film who tweeted after he finished it about how proud he was of himself, that was gross. It’s hard to write a screenplay! It gets to another level when not only does a film become bad, but it’s “irresponsible”. This kind of gets into the reaction from the movie Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, MO. There was article after article about how awful it and how it doesn’t handle race relations well and I guess on an intellectual level that’s fine, but then they start to announce how “they too disliked Three Billboards and that means I’m smart and woke”. Then when a person they respect says they kind of liked it, they’re shocked must know why! Conclusion: Spend more time and energy talking about the entertainment you like than the entertainment you hate. (Full disclosure: I haven’t seen Three Billboards)
Who knows whether or not I’ll be back in 2018 because social media might cost and extra $5 a month to use now that Net Neutrality is gone. Wow, what shitty year. I going to believe that we’ll be okay though. May not be true, but I’ll believe it.

-just chilling in my bed, warm, with the rain outside, happy in the knowledge that I’m on my own here and I’m doing fine. That the panic attacks are coming but I keep doing things like they’re not even there. Knowing that I’ve traveled the world with friends I never thought I’d be able to make, but also by myself because I’m relentlessly confident and capable. Knowing that I made an initially terrifying place a home that will never leave my heart, and I learned to love everything about it. Knowing that maybe I fall in love with people I barely know, with places I’ll never see again, with moments and with feelings too easily, but it’s okay. This semester was the most exciting of my life, and it helped me grow so much. But every year just gets better, doesn’t it? It will hurt so much to leave, because you’ll miss having classes you legitimately enjoyed, you’ll miss Cork and its beauty and perfect size, you’ll miss the friends you made who became family - you took care of eachother and traveled together and made promises to write postcards and see eachother again someday, you’ll miss the teachers who were kind to you, you’ll miss your gorgeous school that felt more right than OSU, you’ll miss having an apartment of your own in IRELAND, you’ll miss feeling like you were doing something big (but that feeling will come again), you’ll miss feeling that every day is new and exciting (but if you try hard enough, you can do that at home, too), you’ll miss cheap flights to amazing and stunning new countries, you’ll miss Ireland’s beautiful scenery and the knowledge that your ancestors are near you, you’ll miss the burgers, you’ll miss the independence, but you won’t miss that weird meaty sewage smell that comes out sometimes?
-learning to cook pasta and salmon from Ane
-Sophia never changing the toilet paper roll
-hot water only between 6 and noon!
-paying so much for electricity
-putting up ghost lights and then tinsel

-Halloween, where you were exhausted but you had fun putting on makeup with Flo and Rachael, then the amazing parade, then meeting up with everyone, doing your first tequila shot, arguing with a nazi
-being known as the short, young, independent, fearless one who’s not afraid to go alone
-FaceTiming rose, David, Rebekah, Carrie/Alison/Bailey/claire, callie, my family at thanksgiving
-the 8 or 9 hour time difference, depending on where I was, and having to wait til 2 or 3 to start talking to my friends and family at home
-really good salmon!
-st. Finnbarr’s cathedral, your favorite and the most gorgeous building in cork
-standing in the kitchen at any time of day, just gazing out the window at the rolling hills and trees in the distance, or the sprawling city, or the sky, or the trains flying by or creaking to a stop
-awful bus service!
-the peaceful 45 min walk to school every day
-that baffling final that started with a 25 min fire alarm
-watching the vagina show with Ane
-writing my columns and having them turn out so long because I learned so much from the people around me about their cultures and I had so much to say
-the aching sadness that presented around the halfway mark as I realized I’d have to leave this moment in time behind and that things would never be the same
-the amazement that I could’ve been so utterly terrified by the thought of this experience, that my conceptions were completely wrong - that id travel alone mostly and that I’d eat a lot more potatoes and that I’d be having panic attacks all the time
-the panic attacks were less than you expected, happily, but they did start waking you up for sleep, which didn’t happen before
-running around London with Ethan at night and spontaneously going on that spinny ride with the operators who were high on weed
-getting pizza with Morgan at sliced that one time where she just asked a random Irish person what their favorite place to get pizza was

-making friends with adorable Ben
-covering my room in sticky notes to learn irish
-Sophia always asking what I’m cooking and me always having to answer either pasta or eggs
-chocolate muffin and Innocent juice from UCC cafeteria
-less than great and very personal memory: randomly getting obsessed with Ms. McGarry & her opinion of my and my academics because she’s everything I want to be when I grow up - kind, organized, in control, a strong woman in a position of power, handles questions amazingly, confident walk, gorgeous, nerdy, slightly awkward, impeccable style. But also, realizing that I’m a solid person in my own right and I don’t need her approval. But it still stinging anyway when I felt that she had liked me more at the beginning and less when she got to know me.
-everything about finding the grave. (See fb profile picture)
