In this freezing February weather, with the trees still bare, the sky’s often grey hue and when it is sunny, glaring harshly through the trees, the lush deep forest green of Serpentine calls to me and makes me swoon extra hard. Vivid Forest Green Serpentine has been treasured throughout West Africa for more than a thousand years. These ancient hand shaped and drilled stone beads were found in Mauritania and Mali, where they are though to have been imported into Africa across important trade routes for Gold, Copper, and Salt at the height of the Empire of Mali. Their origin was the Indus Valley, which was the location of two major Ancient Cultures; the Harappan and Mohenjo-Daro Civilizations. These Precious Serpentine Beads are in the same configuration as they were purchased in Mali years ago. They have been lovingly restrung on fresh cotton cord by our New York City staff. My stony hand-helper otherwise known as "The Thing" brings you Willow Pattern double sided vintage tin earrings complete with antique Trade beads (also known as Prosser Kakamba beads). I'm fascinated by trade beads, because often they had a unique manufacturing process. These beads were made by the Prosser “cold paste” technique, conceived by English brothers Richard and Thomas Prosser in 1840 for the purpose of manufacturing porcelain buttons. The process entails molding cold paste under significant pressure to achieve individual shapes, before it is fired. Recognizing that the Prosser technique could potentially be adopted for beads, French button-maker and bead collector Jean-Felix Bapterosses bought the rights to the technique sometime in the 1850s. However, Bapterosses soon realized the paste used for the Prosser technique was too inflexible for making beads. After some experimentation, he discovered that the addition of cow’s milk made the paste far more malleable. Inspired by the popularity of Venetian Trade Beads, he began to produce pressed beads on a massive scale at his factory in Briare, France, for use as currency by European merchants. Prosser Beads were distinct from other European trade beads in that they were produced in a great variety of colors, and were also translucent. They were received particularly well in the town of Kakamba in the Republic of the Congo – hence the name Kakamba Prosser Beads. According to natives, Prosser Beads were deliberately strung upon weak string so that they would break easily, in turn creating an almost constant demand for more. The RSN Embroidery Studio is currently restoring the beading of a casket dated 1672! Embroiderer Marg Dier has done a huge amount of research into caskets of the period and is reworking the areas now missing such as a snail and a unicorn, with beads from our vintage bead collection. These are all of the beads that I was able to put together that were from animal claws and teeth. I don’t know what kind of animals they came from and can’t even tell you if they were aquatic or terrestrial... But, I know that they were from the tribe that my great uncle befriended and worked with (they lived on his land.) The items were most likely locally harvested from either the forested areas around Rio de Janeiro or Rio Grande do Sul. I know that the tribe lived ina forested area and that there was access to fresh water because they did a lot of spear fishing and I even have a canoe paddle (will be listing that soon too).

My mother told me that they lived in the Amazon... but I have looked at the maps and neither Rio de Janeiro or Rio Grande do Sul were anywhere near the Amazon River. There is so much that I don’t still know....

Anyway.... I don’t know how much to list as a selling price for these and have put them up for auction as a bulk lot on eBay. I set the opening price for $20 (with free shipping) because this is what I feel would be a fair minimal price. I suspect that they are worth much more but being as there are so many “unknowns” involved, I just thought I’d put it out there and let the final price be set by the people who would be interested in this stuff and can use it. Value is only determined by what someone feels that an item is actually worth to them and therefore I feel that this is probably the best way to do it.
