The Flat That Epstein Bought - Liverpool Echo - July 11, 1964
HOME - with the man behind the Beatles, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Cilla Black, Billy J. Kramer, etc, etc.
Reported by Barbara Anne Taylor
---
I don’t want to brag or cause any jealousy, but I used to queue for the Saturday matinee at a cinema that was next to a furniture shop that was called Epstein and Son and that Epstein’s other son manages the Beatles.
And that is as exciting as dancing with a man who danced with a girl who danced with the Prince of Wales.
The other son is Brian, who has in his time pursued many careers until he found his present crock of gold. He did originally embark, with no lack of enthusiasm, on a career in his family’s furniture business.
CRAFTY CHERUB
“I was 21 at the time,” said Mr. Epstein, who looks like a sharp-clothed, crafty cherub, “and extremely interested in design and interior decorating - still am. I served,” he added stoically, “my apprenticeship with the Times Furnishing Company in Liverpool.
“I was fanatically keen on what I regarded as contemporary at the time. I felt quite a missionary zeal about it, so I wasn’t fired with enthusiasm about the furniture in my father’s shop. It all looked to me like greasy great walnut bedroom suites.
“I was full of notions about the customers really wanting the sort of furniture I wanted them to have. I overlooked the fact that my father is a successful business man because he knows what his customers want. However, I persuaded him to stock some of the furniture of my choice.”
When I asked Mr. Epstein if his chosen furniture sold, he received the question a trifle incredulously: “I saw to it,” he said stonily, “that it did” - and having subsequently witnessed something of his adroitness as a salesman, who can fail to believe him?
Mr. Epstein is clever at picking people; he picked his parents very wisely, for his indulgent father then set him up in his own furniture shop in Hoylake.
He was able to revel in the furniture of his choice and provide an interior decorating service to boot. “It was the interior decorating side I enjoyed most, I had lots of ideas and I love experimenting with colour.”
When I asked Mr. Epstein if he was able to submit his clients to his ideas he replied: “The customer is always right.”
Mr. Epstein inhabits the top floor and the roof, where he has potted plants and wrought iron furniture, and swinging chintz hammocks and a splendid view.
He has two bedrooms and a study and one large, long combined living and dining room, which is decorated in white, grapish green and amber and is inspiringly tidy.
“I can’t bear clutter, I’m obsessive about plainness and simplicity, in fact, this room looks cluttered to me,” he said, eyeing with some distaste this positive precedent for orderliness.
The Buyer of Antiques
“I like buying antiques, although I have no knowledge of them. I don’t care about their period or their history. I just care about their shape. I couldn’t live with only modern furniture now, you grow out of such utter devotion. It’s rather sad really.”
“I find it completely absorbing searching for exactly what I want but there’s really not much choice, is there? I mean, there appears to be a lot but when you get down to it there is really very little.
“And isn’t it sad when finally you’ve found exactly what you want, then you discover that it’s exactly what hundreds of other people want too. It sort of spoils the specialness of it.
“I found it an exciting experience furnishing my first home, it takes a lot of time and thought, because you are imprinting something of yourself there. I think there is something of me in this flat, though it’s not exactly right. I long to have a separate dining room... well, what I really long for is a house.
Knows What He Wants
“I know exactly what I want. I can’t describe it to you, I could perhaps draw it. It is certainly nothing like the castles and follies I keep being offered. It’s a house I’ve had in my head for ages, I’ll know it the moment I see it.
“Till then I’m happy here. I look forward to coming home, that’s the big test, and my friends seem to like it and that’s also important because I love entertaining.
“Yes the Beatles approve - at least they approve of most of the furniture: they were a bit scornful about the antiques. Paul is very fond of the rocking chair, but what they all approved of most was the way I had their photographs framed. Cilla thinks it is all fab.”

Came across a yard sale a couple of blocks away from home - they were cleaning out a huge amount of stuff, mostly tools and hardware. I got this antique fan, Pyrex bowl, miniature crock, jewelers vise, slotted spoon, awl and crowbar for the princely sum of $7! The awl even looks exactly like a prop from one of the Room puzzle games!
I was so excited to disassembe and reassemble, clean the dust, rust and grime off these things I forgot to take 'before' photos.
There were also four boxes of vintage blue tiles with flowers that they were just going to throw away that I almost took with me but I had to talk myself out of it.

Shoulder Jug
Salt-glaze pottery is typically stoneware featuring a glossy, translucent glaze with a slightly orange-peel texture. This effect is achieved by throwing common salt into the kiln during the high-temperature phase of firing.
These shoulder jugs were specifically designed to allow a matching butter crock to sit upside down on top of them for convenient storage.
Measures 11" tall by 7" wide
Watch this video from Larry's Antiques where he explains the benefits of the shoulder jug. https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1486685995046920

Not sure if it's still there, but last time I checked there was this Revigator water jar (crock?) for sale at a local antique store. I'd love to own it as part of my collection but I'm concerned about the level of radium and other toxic materials inside. I also don't have a glass case or anything to display it in, but the jar comes with a lid so that might help contain possible radium dust? Last image is what it looks like on the inside. Piece is from the 1920s/1930s.
Any radium experts out there? Thoughts???

🏴‍☠️ Here Be Pirates.....or at the least a singularly jolly pirate of ill repute
🧭 ⚔️ An exhaustive film review of Disney’s Blackbeard’s Ghost (1968).
Tumblr media
Having read other reviews of this jocular cinematic farce, I unearthed assorted scathing reviews that tend to focus with choking gloves on the film's lack of historical accuracy. The humorous quandary? I doubt Disney had in mind a historical replication when conjuring this film to existence. For those curious bystanders, I am a historian. However, there are times when for comedic necessity, artistic liberties must be admissible. Such is the case with Peter Ustinov’s drifting pilfering-plunderer. Rather, Disney focused on the ghost aspect of the retelling, attempting to wield a believably good-natured human being for the savage historical figure. This film bears an almost Scooby-Dooish aura blending a good measure of both cartoonish spookisms and a spoonful of Disney’s atmospheric Sleepy Hollow (1949). However, if you are a ghost hunter in quest of a hair-raising reverie, you are likely to meet with disappointment.  Nevertheless, Robert Stevenson’s ghost story makes for a delightfully outlandish Halloween film. Stevenson was no stranger to the supernatural: this film was preceded by the Banshee-laden Darby O’Gill and the Little People (1959) and followed by Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A few years earlier, in 1966, Don Knotts chanced a comedic encounter with an unseen organ-playing ghost in The Ghost and Mr. Chicken (1966). Though with its light-hearted moments, Steven’s ghost-tale managed to capture what Alan Rafkin had not. The Ghost and Mr. Chicken imbibes a more eerie and surreal atmosphere than Blackbeard’s Ghost, which relies on comedy more than irony, suspense, and mystery. This, of course, arguably, is at the hands of the genius character of Ustinov, who balances both tragedy and jollity into a figure, that if recreated in cinema today, would likely stench of brutality. Ustinova harnesses his natural almost child-like energy with a freckle of Shakespearean monologue to craft a character who is seemingly capricious—grossly depressed and crocked at one instant and reeling and crooning the next. Stevenson does recycle the incantation sequence rehearsed in the Shaggy Dog (1959), which ironically saw Dean Jones reprising the role of Wilby Daniels in the 1976 sequel.
Tumblr media
Did I mention that Luther encounters an eerie portrait as well?
Tumblr media
However, a more colorful plot is constructed: first, Steve Walker unwittingly suffers the brunt of a spooky retelling of the witchery of Aldetha Teach by a possessed Emily Stowecraft. One source recounts, “After a bidding war with the football coach at the charity auction, Steve wins an antique bed warmer once owned by Blackbeard's 10th wife, Aldetha Teach, who had a reputation of being a witch. Inside the hollow wooden handle of this bed warmer is hidden a book of magic spells that had once been the property of Aldetha. Steve recites, on a lark, a spell "to bring to your eyes and ears one who is bound in Limbo,” unintentionally conjuring up the ghost of Blackbeard, who appears as a socially-inappropriate drunkard, cursed by his wife to an existence in limbo unless he can perform a good deed.”
Tumblr media
The uncanny behavior of fortune-telling Emily Stowecraft and the shivery portrait of Aldetha remain the singular instances in the film that one might deem ‘spooky.’ Yet there remains a hint of comedy here as well. So certain was Aldetha of her husband’s flagrancy that she felt confident this would prove an impossible task to accomplish, ensuring his permanent residence in the suspended universe of limbo. A more humorous question remains for the historian: how did a despised outlaw such as Blackbeard manage to procure the ears of the authorities to have his wife burned for witchcraft?
Tumblr media
It is equally amusing that the Daughters of the Buccaneers are aware of the pirate’s spectral presence and live in unison with him without the slightest hint of trepidation, almost invoking Lucy Muir’s devotion to the captain’s ghost and his portrait (much the way Emily Stowecraft swoons at Blackbeard’s painted likeness). In classic film, portraits are as a direct means of introduction as a welcoming party, especially if the character is dead in Rebbeca’s (1940) case and with Captain Gregg.
Tumblr media
I see several artistic parallels to other ‘family’ ghost stories that Stevenson drew on. The portraits being one which echoes back to The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947), where our female protagonist, Lucy, initially receives an introduction to the friendly spirit, Captain Daniel Gregg. In a similar parallel, Steve’s first acquaintance with the benevolent phantom is through Blackbeard’s revered portrait. In a like manner, the phantom-captain performs various ‘good deeds’ toward the widowed mother. Lucy receives a slew of strong warnings that the old mansion is haunted as well: “Gull Cottage…has a reputation as being haunted by the spirit of a seaman who accidentally died there.” In both films, the protagonists ignore the warnings about the blithe spirits who both happen to share the occupation of seafarers.
Tumblr media
Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s masterpiece draws its life-blood from bleak atmosphere, tragic irony, and dark romanticism, whereas Stevenson relies on comedic absurdity and a cartoonishly colonial backdrop. Unlike the Ghost and Mr. Chicken, however, Luther Heggs is never quite certain whether or not the ghost exists, although, like the Daughters of the Buccaneers, the Psychic Occult Society of Rachel insists on the presence of spirits on the mansion grounds. At the least, although manifesting outright slapstick comedy, Stevenson had the good sense to draw from previous ghost films. Blackbeard’s Ghost most closely resembles the nonsensical merriment captured in the colonial ghost story Abbot and Costello in The Time of Their Lives (1946) where Horatio and Melody are imprisoned in limbo for 166 years haunting the grounds of the Tom Danbury estate.
Tumblr media
It is important to note that Stevenson had previously worked on the colonial production, Kidnapped (1960). That was an earlier film, however, completed before Walt had passed, and the production value was quite higher in terms of costume design, set props, and atmosphere. I was disappointed that more attention was not given to set design, atmosphere, and Blackbeard’s ship, Queen Anne's Revenge, glimpsed at the conclusion of the film. Where the Shaggy Dog had an intricate and well-developed plot surrounding the Borgias, witchcraft, shape-shifting, an eerie musical score, and a macabre wax museum, Blackbeard fails in this Halloweenish aspect. Where it fails in atmosphere, however, it makes up for in humor.

The Capture Of The Pirate Blackbeard In 1718, Painted By Jean Leon Gerome Ferris (c. 1863–1930)
Peter Ustinov appeared in several other Disney films, and this presented one of his funniest roles. He is quite believably a disheartened pirate, but unlike Lucy and Luther’s spirited friends, he is less hostile and quickly attaches himself to Steve. This is the beauty of an actor who is able to breathe life into their character and shape-shift into the actual persona. Is this an accurate portrayal of Edward Teach? Perhaps not, but after several hundred years in limbo, one might experience a change of heart. In keeping with the spirit (pun intended) of the other films, Steve appears psychologically disturbed to those on the periphery, making his reputation and mental wholeness questionable.
Tumblr media
As far as dialogue is concerned, Peter Ustinov provides some colorful monologues drawing on his extensive theatrical experience, which provides a unique dichotomy to his comedic persona. For the most part, the other characters lack much development. Richard Deacon delivers a commendable performance as the panicky Dean Wheaton. Michael Conrad, as the football coach Pinetop Purvis remains true to his typically charmingly arrogant self, but if he was included as a competitor for Jo Anne’s affections, this seems lacking, and the romance between Jo Anne and Steve seems rushed. Emily Stowecroft is a curious character, and I wish that more information had been divulged as I feel she must be in some way related to Aldetha Teach. Usually, the musical score does something for the characters, but aside from the arm-in-arm shanty the duo carols toward the end, the music is without, and yet somehow, the quietness of the film is effective.
Tumblr media
Silky Seymour, oddly enough, is deserving of his own paragraph because he remains one of the most unperturbed villains in the Disney cinematic universe. I sense that Joby Baker is attempting to pull off the reticent coolness of a younger Charles Bronson. Unlike contrasting Disney villains such as Alonzo Hawk, Peter Thorndyke, A.J. Arno, Stratos, and Dan (Neville Brand’s character from That Darn Cat), Silky lacks the frustrated energy, and in this regard, he more closely resembles the George Sanders’ villain, Thomas Ayerton, from In Search of the Castaways (1962). He is a peculiar villain that maintains that posh and polished unconcerned arrogance perfected by George Sanders. Of all the Disney villains, his voice is velvety, almost sexy, and his mannerisms unmistakably bourgeoisie. Similar to the other characters, however, he remains mostly underdeveloped, and there is little to know about him save his gambling enterprises.
Tumblr media
I imagine Stevenson had in mind a subdued Shaggy Dog that would be less occultic and with a less threatening villain. Overall, however, this is a charming film worth viewing for the comedy, and the excellent dynamic played between Ustinov and Jones, and if you are searching for a Halloween film for younger viewers, this is a plus. What has led me to admire this film so ardently is Ustinov’s dialogue, the comedic duo of the two, the delightful friendliness of Blackbeard, and the mischievous peculiarity of Emily Stowecroft. Suzanne Pleshette is a delight as well, always maintaining her strong and dynamic personality, and of all the Disney couples, her and Jones’s portrayal is the most endearing. In the end, it is Ustinov who steals the performance, and it is his unrepeatable skill that breathes life, humor, and atmosphere into the film.

WRITING AND LOOKING
Chapter 4, pg. 14/21, Figure 4.18
Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, Shuttlecocks (1 of 4)
Tumblr media
These artists have included a series of ingredients or principles of design into this piece of artwork. First I noticed the use of scale and proportion. The artists used 5000 pound shuttlecocks to demonstrate mocking and humorous tone. Implied lines and balance are noticeable within the columns of the gray building in the background. The focal point obviously is the extravagant shuttlecock which is another important composition of design. Again the artists uses emphasis on this huge shuttlecock to draw the viewers attention.
CONNECTING ART TO YOUR WORLD
Color has affected my life through my constant change in hair. I tend to get bored of my hair color or style quickly. My favorite colors I have done have been purple and red. When it comes to purple I like a pastel and calm appearing tone. There has been a differentiating value of purples in my hair unlike the red. The red color I had was much more saturated than purple. It is bright and consistent in value throughout. I tend to stick to warmer hues like purple and red. If i had a color scheme for my life it would be all warm tones of a beautiful Florida summer sunset.
ARTIST'S CHOICE
Although this painting may appear negative, it is a brutally honest representation of how it feels to have anxiety. I used acrylic paint and medium sized canvas.

PHOTO/DESIGN
Portrait
Tumblr media
This portrait is of woman wearing a tightly coiled blend of flowers on her head representing the righteous pride of being an African American woman. The specific name of the woman is not mentioned. It was taken by Akilah Townsend in Chicago, Illinois. Townsend feels that African American woman with non-European features are not celebrated enough.
Landscape
Tumblr media
This photo was taken in Iceland of Kurkjufell Mountain by Lurie Belegurschi. I love the depth that is created using a stacking technique of similar shaped objects to create dimension.
Still Life
Tumblr media
This still life portrait was taken by Emine Basa. She is incorporating some artisan bread, a pear, fresh garlic, an onion, a wooden spoon, a crock and a homemade clay goblet. She included this material because Basa has been collecting antiques, wood objects, and dried fruits. The artist does a wonderful job dramatizing and cultivating everyday ordinary objects with extraordinary attention to detail in regards to contrast in light. I love the real life steam coming out of the crock.

000|boy next door
Name last name was born and raised in the small town of ooo by her parents; both doctors who work at the same hospital with her father on the morning shifts and her mother with the nights, they made sure their only daughter and child had a parental figure present in her life. Growing up in a small town meant she knew all the neighbourhood kids and all the other kids in the other neighbourhoods. It meant knowing the layout like the back her own hand, she knew which stores had the best antiques, the good liquor shops, the cool hangout spots for teens and children alike, the lowkey drug dealers and druggies and their meeting points, how to contact them. She knew the old crocked willow tree who’s trunk was a twisted heart in the centre of the amusement park turned junkyard where all the couples went to tie a ribbon of their choice to its leafless branches. She liked going there on windy days to watch the colourful strips dance in the air currents. It meant knowing the houses that give the king size candy bars on Halloween. It meant everybody knew everyone and no one was a stranger.
So understandably name was confused to see a moving van parked in front of the house next to hers when she looked out the window in her bedroom on a cool afternoon. Name didn’t recall any of her neighbours moving out, come to think of it she doesn’t remember anyone living in that house. Name couldn’t help the intrigue. It was the summer before high school, everybody already knows one another from grade school, cliques have been formed along with the tight bond that comes with knowing someone all your life, it would be undeniably hard for them to find where they fit in; name could imagine. At least they’ll have the entire summer to figure it out and make friends, not that it’ll take that long, the people of ooo are known for their friendly nature and welcoming aura.
Name had met them that night when they arrived at their doorstep with what she assumed was a peace declaration in the form of ‘bacon pancakes’, they called it, if she remembers correctly. Her father was busy in the kitchen with dinner, leaving name the responsibility of answering the door. Immediately she swung the door open she was momentarily blinded by one of their high wattage smiles. The hair colour haired girl had to blink a few times while they introduced themselves and hope she didn’t come off as rude. Of course she introduced herself and with the door closed behind her, she made small talk with her new neighbours; the twins; jermaine and jake and their little brother finn- the one who smiled- who was only a year younger, in the chill of the night.
Name had been smitten at first sight by his wonderful smile and aura of good humour, not that his brothers didn’t radiate that kind of energy. If you asked name they all looked like triplets with their blonde locks and big eyes with that said there are some noticeable differences in character, for example; jermaine is calmer and sager than the rest while although finn and jake share a sporadic nature finn got it in the heavier doses and jake seemed wiser and more grown up at times during conversation.
Taking the stack of pancakes- name learnt was something their mother made them do whenever they move, which implied that they move quite a bit- they said their goodbye’s and by the time name shut the door, she subconsciously hoped their stay here would be permanent and she’d come to the realisation. She had a crush on finn.
They had the bacon pancakes as dessert, who knew buttermilk pancakes layered with bacon butter cream would be delicious? After saving some for her mother and helping wash up, name went to bed with a mental note to properly say hello the next day.
But she always procrastinated; it’s not like she had anything better to do and seeing finn again should have been motivation enough but she just kept putting it off until the next day. Eventually he made acquaintances, formed a group of his own, as she suspected, he fitted in nicely with the rest of the jocks. She became so busy with her friends that it felt like there wasn’t time to even think about seeing him.
So she gave up the thought all together. Then she found out a window in her bedroom is directly opposite his. It became a subconscious habit to peer into his room from time to time; wondering what he’s up too. There were nights when he’d close the curtains but keep the lights on while name watched his silhouettes on the curtains mimic his actions. Other times would be in the reverse and there were seldom mornings when he’d be passing by and notice your form in the window, he’d stop to smile and wave, hoping you’d return the action but you never did, paralyzed by embarrassment, all you did was look away.
A year passed and nothing changed and that’s when name knew that she was in trouble. She’s had crushes before, none of which lasted more than a month but this was different, a year and counting isn’t something to laugh at. She’s so infatuated with a male whom she’s never once held a decent conversation alone with not even at the neighbourhood cookouts or holiday parties or at school or after big game and everyone’s patting his back. She’s simply too nervous to do anything but watch from the sidelines.
Name doesn’t understand what’s so special about him. Of course there was the thing that started everything, his delightful grin and the things she’s come to notice over the months; his boyish good looks with long blonde locks that looked better kept than his brothers’, she enjoyed watching him play basketball- she noticed was his favourite sport though he did play others- seeing drenched in sweat is a sight to behold, his shirt would cling to his body, outlining his lean muscular form. Name quite liked his wardrobe too, it was as if he had a colour scheme; cool colours such as blues, blacks and greens complemented by a touch of white he got from the backwards caps or beanies he’s seen wearing really ties the whole teenage heartthrob vibe. Maybe it was how he could blend in with the crowd and still be the centre of attention, maybe it was all of those things and at the same time none of those things but whatever it was it certainly drew her in.
Looking back in it she sounds awfully shallow which is far from the point. There was something about him as warm and inviting as his smile that pulled you in. The hair colour haired female was determined to find out, she’d write a list if needs be, in fact she made it a new year’s resolution to get closer to him. So one must understand why she lost her shit when iridella told her she’d be tutoring finn after Christmas break.
