There was no romantic or mystical reason for it, he was just an asshole, and no matter how hard they try to sell this as a cute misunderstanding this was all really violent and invasive. And again, it wasn't written in a way to tantalize ppl that might be into this set up, it was just a lazy hand wave.

The main thing to ask yourself in romance is why they can't be together NOW, or why this complication can't be resolved NOW, and if the answer is as easy as having a quick chat before a violent kidnapping and soul magic without your consent, you might need to beef up ur plot!!

OMGGG NOW THAT YOU’VE FINALLY PLAYED IT, can I just say how satisfied I am to see that Bastien is a traitor 😂 Flashbacks to when horny choices players were so in love with him and would write fics about him, and it was such a cringe time. So when I saw that, it was like winning the lotto of pettiness 😌

I played it when it first started releasing so I’ve known for a while.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I actually thought Bastien being a traitor was a little out of character for him. One could argue that he betrayed us by setting us up with Tariq in the whole photo scandal. But he didn’t. His loyalty was toward Constantine at that time and he acted under his orders: he was never actually on our side. It wasn’t him betraying us: it was simply him screwing us over big time.

Him doing shady shit? That I could absolutely see. After all, he did set us up even though it wasn’t actually a betrayal, rather, him acting on a corrupt king’s orders. But his degree of treason was extreme. Probably the most extreme out of any other traitor in the series besides Barthelemy, who outright tried to usurp the throne. He dedicated life and limb (literally, he received a permanent leg injury) to Cordonia and the royal family. For him to all of a sudden turn around and be a traitor by serving the Via Imperii of all people felt very out of left field for him.

Furthermore, you would think Bastien would have at least informed Constantine and Liam of the Via Imperii. Yes, it would have put a target on their backs, but they would have been much safer being aware of the threat than caught off guard as they were so many times throughout the series.

Plus, the Via Imperii assassinated both Queen Eleanor and Jackson Walker (BIIIIIIG people in Cordonia! Eleanor was queen and Jackson was a Guardian of the Realm) and were behind basically every threat to the royal family during Constantine and Liam’s reigns. I just find it very hard to believe he didn’t tell Constantine or Liam anything about them. Especially when Barthelemy came so, so, so agonizingly close to taking over Cordonia.

There were no hints, no foreshadows, no clues of any kind that Bastien was part of something like this. They’ve changed a lot of stuff around on the fly before. Maxwell becoming a love interest in book two of TRR, Bastien and Madeleine surviving the events of TRR book three even though they were originally supposed to be killed by Anton’s assassins, that kind of thing.

So honestly and truly? I’m chalking Bastien’s betrayal up to The Royal Finale’s terrible writing. I don’t like Bastien, but I really think his treason was just the lovechild of bad writing and shock value. And let’s be real, TRF had a lot of the former and very little of the latter.

thinking more than i should about the ostwick mages. like i love this wild theory that blackwall's sister is alive and first enchanter there, but it's vivienne that really got me spinning.

she was in ostwick first, before being moved to montsimmard, and being 40-something rn, she's pretty much exactly idris' age, they would be classmates as kids, and it's really funny, bcos they are very similar in some cases, and complete narrative foils in others.

they both want better treatment of mages, but going about it in completely opposite manner. vivienne believes that you can work from the inside of the chantry and became influential enough to make big meaningful changes - which sounds absolutely wild, no one managed to do anything like that before, and yet, if she becomes the divine, she's proven right, it actually works. the circumstances are exceptional, but still, the fact that she could lead the famously anti-mage chantry and actually fix circles is remarkable. (i actually have divine leliana in my worldstate, but the fact that it is possible for vivienne is just the proof that she wasn't wrong.)

on the opposite side idris is where anders was at the end of act 3, he just has absolutely no hope that anything about the chantry or circles is salvageable, so he picks the war as the only option left. he wants nothing to go with the chantry to the point that he only went to conclave as a spy and to stop other mages from being too optimistic about whatever justinia will tell him. he's not coming from the place of hope that something about this system can be changed, but from desperation that people are dying and it needs to be stopped. he doesn't believe that chantry can fix anything from the inside, because everything he ever saw chantry do was harming people.

i think they could have been good friends back then, when they were children just arriving in the circle, seeing how shit it was and just both getting the same vague idea that something should be changed. but then when they came to discussing what exactly should be changed, they completely split apart. vivienne sees what she wants to accomplish and puts all her effort into achieving this goal, meanwhile idris anticipates everything that can go wrong and gets ready for that. they would be great partners if they were working on the same project, instead of trying to do exactly the opposite thing than the other.

and then also in personalities they are weirdly similar and weirdly different. they are both very reserved, defaulting to icy politeness the more they dislike someone, and also they know how to play politics very well. but while vivienne actually seem to like the game, or at least outplaying all those orlesian nobles in their own field, idris deeply hates it and wants nothing to do with it.

vivienne managed to found bastien and it's obvious how much she cares about him. more than that, she's friends with nicoline and other members of his family - she found her place and the family of her own, even after bastien is gone. while she may appear cold and unreachable to the inquisitor at first, when befriended, she's really kind and empathetic. she learned how to lower her defenses when around friends and it's a very important skill for one's mental health.

on the contrary, idris never did that, he refuses to let anyone near, because he's to focused on how they can hurt each other, not how they can heal. i think he's a sort of a grim warning to vivienne of how isolated and miserable she would become if she stayed away from people forever. on the other hand, for idris it's a proof of the exact opposite thing - because bastien dies after all, so isn't it better to not even try.

i wasn't really writing it all intentionally most of the time, but they were really just the opposite sides of the same coin. they share the core belief (protecting their people) and some character traits (being naturally cautious and reserved) but then went with complete opposite directions with it.

I was so happy with HC'ing Bastien in RoE and TRR as my medieval husband Raydan Lykel's descendant.

But dear god no, not anymore.

The only time Bastien was ever competent at his job was framing MC. And maybe, maybe, some of his other work for Constantine. I thought it was a coincidence but watching people with no prior experience that just put an effort in do 1000× better has started to make me wonder.
