Even if Sirius was probably a bit cruel to Peter and lacked patience at times, he still spent time with him during school and trusted Peter enough to put James, Lily, and Harry’s life in Peter’s hands. James was his best friend, Sirius went to James’s house when he left home, Sirius was godfather to James’s son, James was one of Sirius’s favorite people and vice versa; and Sirius trusted Peter so much that he put the lives of three people Sirius loved enough to die for in Peter’s hands. Sirius knew the Death Eaters would be gunning for him to get to the Potters, Sirius knew he’d become a major target the second that prophecy was made and James and Lily had to go into hiding, and he trusted Peter enough to go “I am willing to be bait, to let myself be tortured and likely brutally murdered, so you can keep them alive. If I go missing or get captured, you’ll know Voldemort is zeroing in, I can buy all of you time with my life.” Sirius was willing to die in order to ensure his friends would live, and he trusted Peter to keep the Potters safe; we know Sirius distrusted Remus by this point, but he trusted Peter to keep James alive, and he trusted Peter enough that Sirius was willing to die so that Peter could keep James alive after his death. Even if it’s mostly because Sirius thought it was a great bluff, Sirius still was willing to die and leave the Potters’ lives in Peter’s hands so there was a great deal of trust in Peter
Every time I think about this, it honestly just wrecks me. Sirius was such a loyal friend. He loved his found family so much, and that was clear in every single one of his actions and words. Even once they were mostly gone, he still loved them so fiercely and did everything possible to uphold his promises, no matter how much he was constantly thwarted at every turn.
Sirius' entire story from start to finish is just heartbreaking, and a large piece of that rests solely on Peter. Of course he trusted Peter. He was one of Sirius' best friends, regardless of how he might have viewed his mind or work ethic at times, or whatever judgements Sirius might have found in the other. As far as we know, Peter was there from the beginning. He slept in the bed next to the others. He traversed the castle with them, aided them in making the map (you can't tell me they didn't make use of Wormtail for that). HE BECAME AN ANIMAGUS WITH THEM. If they didn't like or trust him, why would they have ever included him in something so great and illegal?
Sirius and James and Remus trusted Peter enough to not only tell him of their plans, but had enough faith in his ability to master the transformation at all. That's a nightmarish process from what we've learned, especially for teenagers with no help. Remus trusted Peter to keep his secret, and as far as we know, he did. He never betrayed that, which also leads me to believe that he valued Remus more than the other two in some ways.
And as you said, there's no way such a massive thing like protecting the lives of three people would have been put in his hands if he wasn't inherently important to them. James wouldn't have entrusted the lives of his wife and son to him, and Sirius certainly wouldn't have handed them over so easily, come up with the idea himself, if he'd had even the slightest hint of uncertainty. James, Lily, and Harry were everything to him. They were his life. He loved them with everything he had, and he purposefully gave them to Peter to protect them as much as he possibly could because he was willing to sacrifice himself to keep them breathing.
Peter's betrayal, whatever the reasoning behind it, must have permanently knocked the air from Sirius' lungs. I can't even imagine the thoughts in his head, the shattering blame he must have felt when he understood what had happened. Everything that had ever meant something to him had been ripped away. He lost his real family for whatever reasons you want to believe. He lost his brother. He lost Remus to distrust. And then he lost the only things he had left, James and Lily dead, Hagrid refusing to give him Harry.
At the end of it all, he only had Peter. And as he stood there in front of that destroyed cottage while Hagrid flew away with Harry on his own bike, as it all settled over him, that realization of everything that had turned so wrong as none of them noticed, the knowledge that he'd made that fatal mistake himself, Sirius lost that one last tie holding everything together.
He trusted Peter to keep them safe. James had trusted them both, and now he was dead. The devastation and rage of that weight must have been unbearable for Sirius.

Here ya go bud. Sorry thing took so damn long. I apologize for any and all mistakes, and hope it’s at least close to what you were looking for. You’re always welcome to request changes!
“SIS!”
The shout echoed through the near empty hall, the familiar voice turning the head of a certain female figure on her way to class with books in hand. She rolled her eyes as she turned to face her brother, better known as the one and only James Potter, who was at the moment being tailed by his friends, the notorious Sirius, Peter, and Remus.
“Yes, Jamie? What in Merlin’s name do you need this time?” She raised an eyebrow, a quirky grin playing about the edges of her mouth. It was James’ turn to roll his eyes.
“I thought we agreed you wouldn’t call me that anymore, sis. You know how embarrassing it is. Especially in front of my friends.” He whined, bumping playfully into her. She giggled.
“Well, I thought we agreed you wouldn’t come dashing after me like my shadow and screaming to attract not just my attention, but the attention of the rest of the school as well. If that’s gone out the window, then ‘Jamie’ is back on the table.” She placed her free hand on her hip and tilted her head, a few strands of her (long/short) hair falling into her face. “You never did answer my question. What do you need from your darling little sister today?” The grin fell from James’ face.
“You know that divination paper I had due today?” James examined the wall as he asked. (Y/n) frowned, but nodded.
“Yeah, you said that Professor Acies gave you an extra couple of days to finish it.” She paused, waiting for him to respond. When he didn’t, realization dawned on her.
“You didn’t finish it.”
He shook his head to imply she was right.
“... And you want me to talk to him, to see if I can weasel out another day or so.”
He nodded once more. She sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose.
“Did you want me to transfigure into a flying bunny and hop through hoops of fire too? Because this is a little ridiculous, James.” He winced at her words.
“C’mon sis. I promise this is the last time.” He was, at this point, pleading with her. She scowled.
“Last time? Last time until what; last time until you get a potions project you can’t do? Last time until you have an argument with a professor and need me to ‘patch things up again’? Last time until next time? You said ‘last time’ last time, James. The whole ‘last time’ line is getting a little old now.” She was now yelling, and drawing attention from students and teachers alike. “Last time was, if I recall correctly, only a month ago. Last time should have been many times before that. But no, there’s always another last time. ‘Last time, I swear’. If you swear it so much, then why haven’t you followed through with it? Huh? I’m sick of your antics, James! Pull yourself together and maybe you wouldn’t be such a mess all the damn time!” She cut off her rant with disgusted scoff, throwing her hands up in the air as she turned on her heel and stormed off, disappearing around a corner.
Sighing as she stalked off through the crowds, she shoved her way to a more deserted tower of the school. Who does James thinks he is, using her to slack off? Stumbling on a stair on her way up, she banged her knee on a cold step. Wincing, she stumbled, catching herself on the wall, and sank to the unforgiving stone. A tear trailed down her cheek as she bumped her knee, moving her skirt and sock to inspect the damage. She winced a frown. A thin line of blood lay across her knee, which was already beginning to bruise. She let loose another sigh, tucking her head against her thighs. What on Earth was she supposed to do about her brother.
“You did the right thing, you know. I would have done the same quite a while ago.”
She looked over in the direction of the voice, and a small smile crept across her features as she saw her boyfriend of two months, the one and only Remus Lupin. Moving her legs away from her face, she slumped against the cool stone wall as he settled beside her and took her hand gently in his own.
“Cheer up, love. You know he doesn’t mean anything by it. He needs help, and you’re the first person he thinks of. Take it as a complement, but don’t give in. Let him be the one to stay up and write and essay all night. Perhaps he’ll learn his lesson then.” He grinned as she giggled; he hated seeing her sad or hurt in any way. Placing a hand gently on her knee, he jerked his head. “C’mon, let’s fix this up and get you to class.” She nodded, biting her lip. Pulling out his wand, he muttered “episkey” under his breath; within seconds, the cut and bruise had reduced to a light yellowish mark on her knee. She beamed, pressing a kiss to his cheek and wrapping her arms around his shoulders to bring him into a hug. He chuckled, lightly resting his free hand on her waist.
“Love?” It was his favourite little nickname. He didn’t know why, but it had been his favourite since forever.
“Yeah?” The way he spoke made it seem as though she had forgotten something. She could feel his light, playful smirk against her ear as he whispered his next line.
“You missed.”
She blinked, and pulled back enough that their noses were less than a centimeter apart so he could easily witness the light blush that lit her cheeks. He chuckled, and pressed a quick little peck to her lips. Her heart jumped, as it always did. The couple quickly pulled away when they heard rapid footsteps coming down the stairs. Suddenly, a shock of curly black hair appeared as Sirius flopped down on the step just above them, mildly out of breath.
“(Y/n), your brother is nearby. He wants to apologise.” He looked between the two red-faced teenagers, and raised an eyebrow. “Though, if I’m reading the atmosphere and your faces correctly, he’s going to be very confused and then very mad, seeing as neither of you has told him what’s happening between you two.” He shook his head, tsk tsking them both. What he was about to say was lost as the soft tapping of James’ shoes came quickly down the stairs to join the rest of the group. When he came into view, Remus had disappeared down the stairs as silently as he had come, and (Y/n) was doing quite a good job at pretending her pinkish cheeks were coloured so because she was angry. Arms crossed, face turned slightly away so he couldn’t see the full extent of her blush, she was secretly quite proud of her acting. James sat beside Sirius, casting his eyes downwards.
“Look sis, I know you’re mad. I understand why, too; I can be a bit much to handle sometimes.” She shot him a glare, and he fidgeted. “Alright, all the time. But I am trying. I did start the paper this time. It’s just that the nuances of divination is a topic I find boring. I just need a day or two to work on it. You think you can help?” James had on a pleading look, and (Y/n) sighed with resignation.
“I’ll see if I can get you a day, but I don’t promise anything,” (Y/n) stated matter-of-factly. James nodded.
“Of course,” he replied. “I can’t expect miracles. Thanks sis; you’re the best.” He grinned at her, and she returned it halfheartedly. By that point her face had returned to its regular tone, and James got up and walked off without question. Sirius shrugged at her, following his friend.
 ---
“I think she’s hiding something,” James thought aloud, breaking the silence. Sirius, beside him, shot him a sidelong glance.
“What makes you think that?” he questioned. James frowned slightly.
“You saw how red her face was. It wasn’t her angry blush either; it was exactly like the blush she had gotten the day of her first kiss.” He paused for a moment. “What if she’s dating someone and doesn’t want me to know about it? Who would she be dating that I wouldn’t approve of?” Sirius snorted.
“How about ‘literally everyone’? Let her live, James. If she wants to date someone, that’s not your choice.”
James contemplated Sirius’ words for a few seconds before scowling. “It isn’t you she’s dating, is it? Please say it isn’t you.” Sirius laughed, drawing the attention of a few nearby students.
“No, it’s a werewolf boy come to sweep her off her feet and steal her away.” Sirius poked his friend’s arm. “Lighten up, James. She’ll be fine.”
---
“So I managed to get him to give you until tomorrow’s class. You have to hand it in then.” (Y/n) had a skip in her step and a smile on her face as she bounded into the Gryffindor common room. James grinned wildly and bounds to his feet, sweeping his sister into a tight hug.
“You’re the greatest, you know?” He set her down. Suddenly, his face went stern. “Now, sit. We need to talk about what you're hiding from me.”
(Y/n) blinked, and convincingly feigned confusion. “I’m not hiding anything from you, James. I’ve got nothing to hide.” A blatant lie, and she knew it; but she didn’t want to say anything and cause a fight between her brother and his best friend. Causing drama was last on her list. James shook his head and steered her by the shoulders into a chair.
“Is it Shawn? Because if it’s Shawn I’m going to kick his bloody ass.”
“It’s not Shawn. First off, he’s with Nancy. Second, he’s not my type.” (Y/n) crossed her arms, replying matter-of-factly. James whirled on her in an a-ha! moment.
“So there is someone.”
“... Yes.”
“You just want me to think otherwise. Is he ugly?”
“James.” (Y/n) frowned slightly at her brother.
“Is it Robert? Philip? Henry? That Birchman kid? Please don’t say it’s the Birchman kid.”
“James.” (Y/n’s) frown deepened.
“Do I know him? Probably. There was that one time you were with that William guy and I thought you were making him up until Christmas dinner.”
“James.” (Y/n) practically had to cut him off before he ranted.
“What?” His gaze met hers, and his facial features took on a look of expectancy.
“Don’t you have a paper to be doing?”
James swore, and ran off to the stairs. “This isn’t over.” With a blink, he was out of sight.
(Y/n) waited a moment before sighing and dropping her head into her hands. “Remus, when is he going to realize I can fend for myself? The over-protective brother act is really annoying, but I can’t just tell him off.”
Remus shrugged. “We could tell him. I don’t exactly like pretending I’m not dating my best friend’s sis when in all reality that’s exactly what I’m doing.” He moved from his spot on the couch to standing behind her, and placed his hands on her shoulders, rubbing some of the knots out. “I know that’s not what you want to do, but I feel it would make things a tad easier.” He pressed a light kiss to the top of her head. “We’ll figure it out.” (Y/n) huffed.
“I know what you mean, but I’m just not sure he wouldn’t have a heart attack or freak out and punch you, you know? I don’t really feel like setting a broken nose.” Remus laughed.
“That’s fair. But we will have to tell James at some point.”
“Tell me what?” James reappeared at the bottom of the stairs, heading for where he left his bookbag on a chair. He slung the bag onto his shoulder, turned to face them, and paused. Before he could say anything, Remus cut in.
“She said she was tense, so I offered to help with her shoulders. Tension headaches suck.”
James snorted. “Damn right they do. So what was it you had to tell me?” (Y/n) thought up something quick.
“You know that ice cream thing from a month ago? Where you were gonna eat it but you left it and it disappeared?” James raised an eyebrow.
“Yeah, why?”
“Well, you know who stole it?”
“Who?”
“Sirius.”
“Seriously?”
“Seriously.”
James cursed, and ran off up the stairs again. (Y/n) relaxed, not realizing she had tensed up. Remus frowned sympathetically, and kissed her cheek. James called down the stairs before either of them could speak.
“You aren’t dating Sirius, right?”
(Y/n) rolled her eyes. “No, I am not dating Sirius,” She called back. To herself, she muttered, “Try the other one.” Remus snorted.
“What’s so bad about Sirius?”
“Nothing, he’s just not my type.”
 ---A Week Later---
James was walking to class with a friend, talking, when the friend let a certain crucial piece of information slip. James cut him off, stepping in front of him to get him to stop moving.
“Wait wait wait. She’s dating who?”
“Remus. You didn’t know?”
“I SHOULD HAVE! SIS!!”
