now that this is us has been over for some time. I have some thoughts and my most important one is Annie Pearson deserved a proper storyline. She’s the only one of Randall’s daughters we really didn’t learn about.

So I feel kind of bad that Jack, William, and Nicky got to have namesakes and Rebecca didn't...but let's be honest, I doubt the four younger grandkids have any vivid memories of her. She moved away to live in the cabin when they were preschoolers and when they were old enough to form memories of her she had deteriorated so much that I doubt they spent any quality time with her. And from spending a lot of time with my grandmother when she had dementia, I don't even blame her for not really knowing who they were: there were a lot of little kids running around. So the only people who have good memories of her are Randall's girls.

My theory is that Jack Jr doesn't name his daughter after Rebecca because someone else has already beaten him to it. In my head, it's Annie, who never got a storyline in the show but grew up to write thinly fictionalized stories about her crazy family and had a little girl on her own she named Rebecca.

To Kill a Kingdom by Alexandra Christo (The Little Mermaid)

Lira is a vicious siren, known for her collection of prince's hearts. However, a serious mistake of hers leads the Sea Queen to transform her into a human, trapped until she can bring her the heart of Prince Elian. Lira is a practiced killer, but Elian is a trained hunter, and sirens are his prey of choice. (YA, high fantasy)

The Land of Stories by Chris Colfer (multiple)

Alex and Conner have had it rough since their father's death, but they find comfort in their grandmother's book of stories. When she leaves it to them on their birthday, they never expected for it to be a portal to another world. Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine (Cinderella)

Ella was given a gift at her birth from a fairy, but it's done nothing but make her life miserable. Fairest by Gail Carson Levine (Snow White)

Small Press Roundup!

As I was making my silly little 2022 book gift guide, I thought I’d round up some (teeny tiny, small, and medium) indie presses to go support this season and beyond. Small press books make especially great gifts since your book-loving friends and family are less likely to already have read them.

Enchanted Lion Books - Beautiful, unique, and translated picture books for kids and adults with more experimental sensibilities. I recommend the Chirri & Chirra books and Sato the Rabbit, A Sea of Tea.

Candlewick Press - If you’re a fan of Jon Klassen and the hat books (or Mac Barnett or Carson Ellis--the group behind the Picture Book Manifesto), you’ve already heard of this publisher, but they do make outstanding children’s books.

Small Beer Press - Speculative fiction fans, run over to Kelly Link and Gavin J. Grant’s incredible, weird, magic book factory. I recommend In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan for the fantasy fans or anything by Elizabeth Hand.

Two Dollar Radio - Their books are cute in trim size and weird in content--the ideal combination. You can also join their tattoo club and get 10 free books. Their lobby/HQ/bookshop/cafe seems like a dream.

Hub City Press - Poetry, fiction, and nonfiction with a focus on promoting diverse stories and underrepresented voices in the South. Novels are more conventional and historical. Good, bleak poetry and thoughtful, specific nonfiction.

Night Boat Books - A bit more on the esoteric side. Their books would be great for academics and poets and anyone interested in queer studies or works in translation.

Wave Books - A poetry press with gorgeous books and lit crit. I recommend Bluets by Maggie Nelson (her other books are published by Graywolf, keep scrolling).

Dorothy - A tiny feminist publisher of fiction or about fiction founded by author Danielle Dutton (check out Wild Milk by Sabrina Orah Mark or The Complete Stories of Leonora Carrington for some surreal, dreamlike times).

Feminist Press - Books with a focus on gender, sexuality, and marginalized voices. (Margot Atwell, publisher/editor, has a newletter On the Books, for publishing nerds out there who want to hear a fresh perspective on what’s up with this convoluted industry.)

Graywolf Press - Want more Maggie Nelson? Or Carmen Maria Machado? Or experimental printing like Telephone by Percival Everett with its 3 versions? It’s all happening in the Minnesota literary world (I’m serious).

Coffee House Press - Also part of the Minnesota book group. Their books are on the experimental and readable side.

Catapult/Counterpoint/Soft Skull - These presses are sisters. You’ve definitely seen these books around--they do hit the bestseller list and are stacked in neat piles at all the best indie bookshops. Danielle Dutton’s (founder of Dorothy, mentioned above) book Margaret the First is published by Catapult.

50 Watts Books - Surreal reprints of older books in stunning colors; the curation of their bookshop is also impeccable and unique.

McSweeney’s - If you have a lowbrow/highbrow sense of humor and enjoy satire, these books are for you. They also publish the creative magazine for creative kids, Illustoria.

Nobrow Press/Flying Eye Books - UK based press for comic and bright color lovers of all ages. I recommend the Hilda series by Luke Pearson and Hicotea by Lorena Alvarez. Katie Harnett’s and Simona Ciraolo’s picture books are also wonderful.

Pioneer Works - This is the book intersection for art, tech, design, music, and science. I recommend Notes on My Dunce Cap by Jesse Ball for (arts) teachers or anyone interested in pedagogy.

Stoops Issue 12 (DIY Issue) is now available!

So I've been doing this magazine for 9 years now and you would think I would have streamlined the process for releases, but being that it is still mostly a one person operation over here with no real industry support or ad dollars, I'm still just doing my best. Each issue hinges on whatever time and money I have to throw into it with hopes of breaking even but mostly coming to terms with the reality that I am spending what others may spend on mortgages, or cars, or alcoholism to put out a skateboarding publication for my own sanity, grasping for a sense of purpose, and for the few of you actually appreciate it. One day I will come to my senses and give it up, but for now, it is somehow still moving along with no drop in quality. And while I know this seems like a pity party of one over here, it is really my segue into the theme of the new issue. Issue 12 has a Do-It-Yourself theme where we explore the concept of creating spots out of nothing. Just as I am creating a magazine with my own resources, accepting the loss of funds to produce something that brings me joy, skateboarders have been doing this for years. Every spot built by skaters using their own hard earned money has no monetary pay off but brings them joy, as well as netting some happiness for others who get to enjoy using the product of that labor. This issue explores the DIY mentality in skateboarding and its importance.

1964 edition of The Crusade Analytical Bible, fully Illustrated and Anointed in Living Color (example)

The Crusade KJV edition I found is way worse for wear, however, and needs a lot of restoration work on the cover. But I figured that since this one's already messed up, I could use it as a ritual bible so I don't ruin my Hebrew Bible during actual workings.

I also picked up a huge Cigar box with absolutely beautiful metal detailing. After a good cleaning and a rub down with Holy Oil and Reverence Oil, it's now housing all (or most; my Bell wouldn't fit safely) of my magical tools. It's absolutely stunning.

This Is Us headcanons, because I have decided to fill in the gaps myself

(BTW, if the showrunners contradicted any of this in their interviews, I do not care because it isn't canon if you don't put it in the show)

Randall does not become President, because I feel that is a wee bridge too far. He does not run for President at the end of the main timeline (2033) but he does run unsuccessfully two more times. Kevin, Jack Jr, and Nicky Jr (more on that later) are special guests at his campaign rallies. He saves in Congress for an appropriate length of time and then retires gracefully.

Beth runs her dance school and continues to be fabulous. She outlives Randall but does not remarry.

Deja and Malik reconnected while she was in med school and he was in law school. A few years after William Jr is born, they have a daughter they name Beth. So Malik gets his own Big Three, and has a teenage daughter and two little kids at the same time. Godspeed to you, Malik.

Tess does not marry the person she was dating in eighth grade, because that's overkill. She goes to the University of Chicago and majors in social work. Eventually she marries and she and her wife adopt a pair of siblings from foster care.

Annie goes to Howard University like Randall wanted to. She writes a series of thinly fictionalized novels about her crazy family as an adult. She becomes a single mother by choice and has a daughter named Rebecca.

Kate remains married to Phillip, who keeps that awesome mustache for a very long time. She opens a bunch of music schools for the blind. Phillip outlives her but does not remarry.

Toby remains married to Laura (aka Vanilla Parfait Lady). They do not have any other kids. He finds a job in LA that satisfies him professionally. He outlives Kate but Laura outlives him: she does not remarry.

Jack Jr struggles with weight as a young kid but Toby gets him into exercising and eating healthy so he overcomes it by his early teens. He does struggle with overdrinking in early adulthood (remember our first glimpse of him was him passed out next to a bunch of beer bottles?) He overcomes it once he starts dating Lucy and never really developed the serious issues all of his male relatives did. Both he and Lucy become the uber Pearsons: successful in both of their careers and with an adorable family to boot. After Hope is born, they have an adorable son named Toby.

Hailey meets her birth mother and sister as an adult but does not develop a close relationship with them. Because there are so many famous members of the family, she was aware that Hailey's parents split up when she was small and has some issues with it. It's disappointing, but that's life. Hailey eventually married a nice guy who is neither the famous guy she slept with or her best friend at the art gallery. They do not have kids. Hailey becomes a very successful art curator.

Remember when only Hailey seems to be invited to Hope's birth and nobody else was around and it seemed to predict Toby and Kate's premature deaths? Yeah, that was crap, they and their spouses were down in the cafeteria eating banana pudding, that's all.

Kevin does continue to act after the present timeline ends in 2022. He never becomes a huge star, but he has a season-long arc on a streaming show, a miniseries that gets him award noms, a voice job. He mostly quits after Rebecca dies and focuses on Big Three Homes and his family, but he does still work occasionally afterwards.

After reconciling in 2026, Kevin and Sophie go to a lot of therapy and marry in late 2027. While they may have wanted kids together at some point, it was not a huge priority for Sophie in her other marriages and they recognize that it is too late now to try for it. It sucks, but that 's life.

Kevin has kind of a Tilda Swinton situation going on with his personal life. For those who are unaware of what that means, actress Tilda Swinton was rumored for years to have one partner she raised her kids with and one she traveled with. She recently revealed this was never the case: she split up with the father of her kids when they were young and remained with the other partner afterwards, but was not involved with them at the same time. Sophie has little interest in Kevin's Hollywood life and only occasionally goes with him to premieres and charity stuff: he'll often take Cassidy, or Madison, or Elijah, or the kids (including Madison and Elijah's son), or Cassidy's son Matty sometimes, or a combination of any of these people. Madison and Kevin do parent stuff together often, and we're often seen at sports events together. The entire collective makes decisions together and helps raise their collective three kids as a team. They often vacation together. Madison and Elijah live at another house in the town where Kevin and Sophie move to, but as we have seen they often hang out at the cabin on weekends. So from a distance, it looks like Kevin is at the very least polyamorous....or maybe has started a cult. Anyway, it's a weird little blended family unit and it works for them.

Cassidy remains close to Kevin and works at Big Three Homes. She does not remarry and remains happily single.

Nicky and Edie married in late 2022. They moved to the small cabin while Rebecca and Miguel moved to the big one. Nicky (who is 85 at the time the story mostly ends, in 2033) dies shortly after the twins graduate from high school in 2039. Edie lives in the cabin another ten years or so before she passes away.

Nicky Jr becomes a major football star and plays for the Steelers, because of course he does. Then he becomes an actor. He basically ends up being The Rock. He marries twice and has a daughter with his first wife and two boys with his second but never really settle down and enjoys DILF life.

Franny becomes a nurse like Bonus Mom Sophie. She marries and has two girls.

Madison and Elijah's son becomes some sort of tech wiz.

I am not sure which one of the four outlives the other, but Elijah dies first because I like him the least.

Rebecca and Jack continue to have a wonderful afterlife together.
