NIMBY namedrops in my vampire TTRPG? More likely than you think...

Episode 3 of NY By Night was very good. We learned so much about the values of each of the coterie. The conversation with Annabelle who has come to NY to warn the kindred was great, but what really made my ears perk up was that she described the neighborhood watch of old ladies that was patrolling that part of the Bronx w/ our coterie as NIMBY.

I think a lot of people are familiar with what gentrification is, but I think NIMBY is somewhat a little more obscure so quick explanation. NIMBY stands for Not In My Back Yard. It’s a political stance typical of residents of a neighborhood who resist the building of public transit and denser housing (apartments, high rises, etc.) wanting to preserve the current neighborhood character. 

There is another movement called YIMBY which is, you guessed it, Yes In My Back Yard. Basically their theory of change is the opposite, they want to build more housing and more public transit in places like NYC. 

But to bring it back to this week’s episode, the Port Morris coterie comes across Annabelle (from LA By Night) who has come to NY to warn the kindred about the Camarilla, explaining the war that happened in LA. However, our coterie seem somewhat resistant to her warnings. They are not concerned with the fights in Manhattan or other boroughs, they are here to protect their own. Besides who’s to say that whatever replaces the Camarilla isn’t just the same status quo?

Annabelle remarks that eventually they will come knocking on the Bronx’s door and even more powerful if no one stands up to them and they are allowed to take over all the surrounding boroughs.

I just thought it was kinda fitting that it was Annabelle who used the term NIMBY. I’m not going to call Annabelle a YIMBY, but it felt kinda close to a YIMBY argument. The belief is that by not building enough to meet demand, gentrification is all but guaranteed to happen as the way we determine who gets vacant housing in this society is by who has the most money. Things like rent control can protect current residents from being priced out for a time, but rent control as we know it only lasts as long as the current resident and their family live in their apartment. Once a rent controlled apartment is vacant, it resets to a new, usually higher price. And thus, as time goes by and demand to be in NYC only increases and people who are priced out of Manhattan start to look next door where the prices are cheaper...well...

P.S. I also think there’s something to be said about vampires who are frozen in time trying to freeze and preserve their territory, but that’s probably for someone more conversant in the lore and politics. But yeah, this episode was very intriguing and gave me a lot to think about.

When I heard that during NYbN yesterday I laughed, mostly because of Isaac’s confused reaction. But today it hit me that Annabelle was talking about the Valley Coterie too… and I cried.

I love them, and I miss them, and their ending broke me. That wonderful family of Kindred scattered and never coming back. Victor and Nelli are busy with their own domains. Jasper has retreated into his labyrinth and wants nothing to do with anyone again. Annabelle’s run all the way across the country. X is in torpor and may never awaken. Eva…

It’s just all hitting me again.

I genuinely enjoyed seeing everyone's reactions. Imma say a few words below the cut!

Starting off hot with Fuego, omg is she one of my favorites to watch when things go down. Even though she is about the same age as Rey and Serif she seems so much more interested in all the possibilities she has as a kindred. Everyday she is learning something new she can do or how she can use her power and Aabria does a phenomenal job with showing and not telling. Her body language is *chefs kiss* I could go on forever about how talented Aabria is but I alas that's not why you're here. Not only that but the realization with Rey and how she wants to tame that type of feral power was so eye opening to knowing now what Fuego is looking for as a kindred. It's a great way to see that she is still a ventrue at heart even if she disagrees with a lot of people in power.

Now Isaac, let me just said ALEX WARD YOU ARE DOING SO GOOD. I love love love the attitude that this character has towards the party. He has been around long enough to not allow them to try and push him around when they are in the wrong. But he is also very good at not coddling them like in labn the coterie had to do with Annabelle. He wants them to learn the hard way essentially and it's such a good perspective to see. It is hard to not step in as a player when you think something could go poorly for another pc but seeing him just sit there and watch things transpire takes a lot of willpower that I admire quite a bit! Not only that but Alex has been coming in with some great lines so far this season! I can not wait for him to unravel a bit more, it's so entertaining to see a kindred lose their cool.

Oh Rey. I love you and your poor choices <3 BUT IM SO HAPPY HE WENT INTO THE PIT OKAY? I absolutely love to see the more physical struggle that he has with his Beast compared to Fuego and her mental struggle. Every ep he has to fight it back and I love that he is still trying to figure it out. It was a one time deal of "oh it will never happen again I will control myself" no! He. Is. Struggling. And that's so important for pc development! You can't always win! I'm so glad Joey is playing Rey this way. It gives the character so much more dimension. Plus who doesn't love an impulsive character? They are usually the ones who help push the plot forward. Can't always talk pretty and get things moving. (But also that frenzy was hella hot I won't lie)

Now Serif is the one I am honestly most interested about when it comes to her home life and sire. She obviously has a lot of issues with free will (especially since her mom seems to be a ghoul) and it comes across so well in Mayanna's acting. Not only that but removing herself from situations that she dislikes or upset her is so good! It's nice to see a character who knows that making a big deal about you being upset in the heat of the moment won't fix the problem. She needs to blow off steam and redirect her feelings until she can talk about it more freely. I need need need a one on one conversation with her and Isaac. I think they have more in common than they realize and could probably benefit from just talking to each other about what has happened so far. Anyways, I am so excited to see where she goes, because as of right now I love her! (Not only that she seems to be the one making connections more on a lower level than the others which is such a plus. Get those thin bloods on your side girl!)

Some la by night thoughts:

going through la by night, and I've come to the conclusion that Jasper and Victor are both power players (I can't tell how much of it is scripted but some of it is not because it unbalances the rhythm of the episode) for different reasons, I guess. Alex Ward knows the system deeply, from what I've seen in nybn and labn, and he can't help but info dump, which is helped by Annabelle who is a new vamp, and B Dave Walters just wants to win all his transactions, which is fair for a Ventrue but I can't help but feel he overruled the others s lot of the time.

Annabelle is - and it pains me to say - annoying. Like, I started this seeing the comments in nybn, where people were fedup with her and I thought it was gratuitous, but this is mid season 2 and she just doesn't seem to grow. My picky issue with it is that she's been a vamp for a while but she keeps acting ignorant for stuff she should know the basics for. Problem with her is that she is a typical Brujah (and Victor is s typical Ventrue) and I've played in a game with these stereotypes and the truth is, they are what they are, but in a more professional campaign it is overwhelming because they never leave character.

I'm having a great time, I really enjoy the show, but damn, the power gaming is driving me crazy now that I've noticed it lol and Annabelle shouldn't have been a consensualist Brujah because she just had a very mighty high horse lol

2. when in canon does your self insert come in? do you have a scene in mind for your entrance?

By the time the show starts, Gabriel is five years old and had come to LA with Chaz. He gets acquainted with Jasper via an old friend of his (@supernaturalinguist 's s/i :]), but I don't think he meets the main cast until I think somewhere between s2ep4 and s2ep9. Not long after Chaz serves his duty as herald, Gabriel's doubts of the camarilla, and his lying and hiding behind Chaz's back come to a head and he leaves him and goes to the only place he could think that would welcome him and protect him now: Club Maharajah. And then he fucks off w Carver lol

3. how do the other characters generally feel about your self insert?

Out of the main four characters:

Jasper and Gabriel were acquainted with each other a while before the others, they get along fine but aren't particularly close. They get along because he's friends with Jasper's partner; they don't really talk aside of that.

Annabelle and Gabriel initially got along well, but it quickly went south with the introduction of Carver. Gabriel grows to be intensely protective of Carver, and with Annabelle's hatred of him, and Gabriel feeling like she's pitying him, he resents her and she tries to ignore his general existence.

Gabriel and Victor have a mutual respect for each other, and Gabriel is thankful for his assistance during his transition into the unbound. If Victor needed his help, Gabriel would come. Victor also sees him as hope that more camarilla vampires could be swayed to his side.

Gabriel and Nelli are the closest, and I think are the only two who see each other often of their own accords. They both understand what being with Chaz was like, and Nelli felt the need to help and protect him after he left. When Gabriel feels like no one else understands him, he'll go to Nelli.
