The Fugitive (1993)
Tumblr media
The Fugitive proves action movies don’t need to be stupid. Asking for well-developed characters, tight storylines, thrilling chases, and spectacular special effects is NOT too much.
Dr. Richard Kimble (Harrison Ford) is convicted of the murder of his wife - a crime he did not commit. After escaping from death row, he searches for the elusive one-armed man; the true culprit. While finding the killer's identity is a challenge all on its own, Kimble must also evade Deputy U.S. Marshal Samuel Gerard (Tommy Lee Jones).
Once this film gets going it never stops - even the murder of Kimble’s wife (played by Sela Ward) is essentially an action scene - but The Fugitive isn't content with merely entertaining through thrills. This is a superbly written film with intelligent, well-rounded characters that feel like they’ve been plucked from real life. It’s not enough that Kimble wants to escape. He wants to exonerate his name. He better. Clever as he may be, he’s pushing his luck every second. He must find the identity of the one-armed man, but where to start? You've got no idea. The film gives you no easy clues.
There’s a fascinating mystery to unravel in The Fugitive. It immerses you fully in this story and makes you feel like you’re right there because you don’t know which clues you should pay attention to. In the beginning, I was taking note of all the characters being introduced. You think you have someone pegged as the killer until you realize they’re just some background character or a minor hurdle for Kimble to jump over and then move on. The way the puzzle is assembled is superb. The primary focus is Kimble, but Gerard is in the film a lot. In most pictures, the two would follow the same paths, more or less. Kimble would board a train and his credit card info would tip off Gerard. The chase would be on but at the last second, Kimble would escape. I’m not saying that’s bad writing. It’s logical, but this picture takes the deductions and the chases to a new level. Kimble’s specialty as a doctor will lead him to a place for one reason and Gerard - as an officer of the law - will pick up on something completely different, something that only he could see. From there, his path will cross with his target's. It makes for a twisty nail-bitter of a chase. They’re both navigating a maze with so many different branching paths you can’t foresee where it’s going next. All you know is that at some point, they’ll see each other face-to-face.
Tommy Lee Jones’ character is one of the most delightful antagonists you’ll find in any action film. The guy’s always making dry comments at his fellow officers, delivering non-stop laughs while also proving himself a worthy foe for Kimble. If anyone else was on the case, the good doctor would stand a chance of solving the mystery he’s trying to uncover. With the brainy Gerard on his heels, it’s a whole other story. There are so many details in both Kimble and Gerard’s actions that by the end of the 130-minute running time (is it really that long? It felt so much shorter) you feel like you’d be able to write their dating profiles and find perfect matches for them.
I could’ve saved myself a whole lot of work by posting “WOW!” in size 200 font but I wanted to do more. I loved this film. I wanted to share that love with you. It comes as no surprise that this expertly-made thriller was nominated as one of the best films of 1993. (On Blu-ray, September 16, 2016)

Chain Reaction (1996)
Tumblr media
I should’ve started my review of Chain Reaction much sooner than I did. I’m already having trouble remembering some of its finer details. Partially because this is one of those generic 90’s "on the run" action movies where nothing is particularly interesting or memorable. Also, it’s as boring a history lecture - even with the explosions that reduce entire city blocks to rubble.
So, the movie begins with this machine that creates free energy out of water, man! Keanu Reeves plays the hero Eddie, and like, the team he works on, including this hot doctor named Dr. Lily Sinclair (Rachel Weisz) finish the machine. But these bad guys come in and destroy the machine, kill everyone involved except for our heroes, and like, it’s a conspiracy cause the “man” doesn’t want us to have free energy, man! Oh yeah, and Morgan Freeman is in the movie too. He plays a guy involved in the project, but I don’t know… he doesn’t seem too trustworthy to me.
The most fun you’ll have with Chain Reaction is making stoner conspiracy jokes and laughing at the perpetual non-science. In the film, we've developed a way to generate clean energy by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen and then burning the hydrogen for fuel. It’s so efficient, a single glass of H20 could power all of Chicago! This kind of story might've worked in the ’50s when there weren’t things like the internet or email. In 1996, several plot points are hard to swallow. For the discovery of a lifetime, all these scientists sure are slow to tell the world...
If questionable decisions (including assassinations by amateurs and massive explosions that could have killed thousands, but conveniently didn’t) and conspiracies that aren’t entirely believable were the worst this movie had to offer, it wouldn’t be all that bad. Unfortunately, this film is 107 minutes of unmemorable. I don’t know if I started viewing it when it was too late, or if I was feeling off that day, but the struggle to stay awake was gargantuan. I had to re-watch key moments because I couldn’t keep my attention on the television.
Chain Reaction is the kind of movie that I’m likely to end up viewing again. Not because it’s good, or because I feel like I missed out on anything. I'm nearly certain that in a few years down the line, when I’ve finally managed to get rid of the big box of random VHS tapes I’ve picked up at garage sales over the years, I’ll be out and about on a Saturday morning and I’ll see another copy on VHS of this film for 50 cents. “Morgan Freeman and Keanu Reeves?! How can I lose for 50 cents?” I doubt even a second viewing of Chain Reaction would help me retain the events that comprise the plot or make me realize that I’ve seen it already. (Fullscreen version on VHS, November 1, 2015)
