One thing I find clever about PL4 is how Emmy reads *Clark’s* letter aloud. We don’t get a voice-over of Clark reading the letter, like with Dr. Schrader, Future Luke, Janice or Angela. (Even if two of those letter-writers were not who they claimed to be!)
Clark isn’t the one who wrote the letter. It’s Luke.
Layton mentioned that Clark was never a fan of ‘typed-correspondence’, but it’s kind of implied that Layton hasn’t contacted Clark in years— long enough to not know where the Tritons were living.
But still, as Layton said, he would never ignore a friend in need. Even after they fell out of touch, he still came rushing to Misthallery to help Clark, knowing something was fishy about the letter.
He still hurried to Monte d’Or to help Angela, despite their troubled past.
He answered Janice’s plea for help— a former student who he cared about enough to risk his and Luke’s life.
Then there’s Dr. Schrader— Layton is absolutely SHOOK when his old mentor suggests that he will open the Elysian box. Layton is even more shook when he finds Scharder’s body on the floor.
Of course, Layton wants to help the letter-writer claiming to be Future Luke, as unlikely as that sounds. Maybe it’s not really Luke, but it’s still a person asking for Layton’s help, so Layton will answer.
And now I’m thinking about how Layton might have emotional constipation, but he still cares about his companions so much. He just doesn’t show it in obvious ways. Maybe that’s why he likes letters so much…
And didn’t CLAIRE give him a letter when she was going to confess her feelings to him?

I still love the fact that Clark was Dr. Schrader’s assistant. It gives a connection between two great side characters, and it feels like everything comes full circle with Clark’s son assisting Schrader’s pupil. I wonder if they had a similar dynamic as we’ve never gotten to see them interact.

Everyone sit down. Everybody sit down right now, we need to talk Andrew Schrader, I have sad and wholesome headcanons to spill.
Major spoilers for the Professor Layton series. Also, heads up, long ass post LOL
Dr Schrader taught archaeology. Targent is big in the field of archaeology. Naturally, the organization would come up during one of Dr Schrader's lectures.
And when it did, even though Hershel's memories of his parents kidnapping are repressed, his brain will still subconsciously recognize the organization.
And when it does, Hershel immediately goes into panic mode. He's in the middle of class, having a panic attack, in extreme distress, and Dr Schrader notices. Of course, he isn't going to call Hershel out in front of the entire class, so he tells the class to go do this random busywork and then will walk around pretending to look over their shoulders like he's checking their work, and then he discreetly slips Hershel a note.
The note asks if Dr Schrader can do anything to help, says that he is always there to support Hershel, and if Hershel needs to take a break from class, or wants to talk after class, he can. But no pressure, do whatever makes him comfortable. Just know that he is always supported and cares for.
And a similar situation happens when the Mask of Chaos is brought up. Except this time Hershel knows why he's so distressed. This time, he whispers to Dr Schrader if they can talk after class, to which Dr Schrader is like "Yes, of course!"
And Hershel ends up breaking down in Dr Schraders office as he recounts what happened that night in those ruins. How he watched his best friend die. Dr Schrader offers him a hug, which Hershel gladly accepts and sobs in his professors arms.
And then after Hershel graduated, Claire died. Hershel was in deep shock, grief. Who called him first? The man that didn't even teach him anymore, but still cared deeply about his emotional well being: Dr Schrader.
AND THEN HERSHEL'S ASSAULT. When Bill Hawks had him be beat so badly he was in a coma for a month. Dr Schrader visited him every single day. Wrote him little letters every single day. Had presents waiting for him when he woke up. Helped him pick up his flat that Bill Hawks ransacked.
And that's why Hershel was always so close with him, called him by his first name, Andrew, got a letter from him about the Elysian Box. They never lost contact. Because Hershel never forgot the man who always went out of his way to look after one of his hundreds of students, who went out of his way to help Hershel even after he no longer taught him. Never forgot Andrew Schrader.

Diabolical/Pandora's Box was the first Layton game I ever tried to play so it holds a special place in my heart. That being said, I never got very far as a kid so I mostly saw Dr. Schrader's introduction at the start ;-; I figured I could draw him (mostly) recovered for @layton-npc-appreciation-week

I've heard it brought up before about how Dr. Schrader somehow managed to escape Targent's notice, but what if he didn't? What if he was Targent's primary mole at Gressenheller, reporting on the most promising archaeology students/future recruits? The guy's already pretty cryptic. It wouldn't be impossible for it to just not come up post-AL

What are your headcanons for PL characters in the years following Layton and Luke’s disappearance?
For example, when Alfendi got promoted to inspector, I think Chelmey finally resigned from Scotland Yard. Chelmey claimed he wanted to dedicate more time to his wife but also he couldn't bear the thought of working another minute with Alfendi Layton. (Chelmey wishes he was more like Hershel.)
Another example… Dr. Schrader, the eternal bachelor, had a close brush with death during an investigation (possibly searching for Layton). Schrader survived but had to get his leg amputated. He’ll constantly change the story of how he lost his leg
Another example… Janice Quatlane opened her own school of music.
It doesn’t have to be related to LMJ or Layton’s disappearance at all

I’ve once again been thinking about my other AU’s and I feel it’s time to finally go in on the little details about them so here’s just a little list of what else I’m working on right now!
Professor Higgsbury - A Professor Layton/Don’t Starve Crossover: A young Theodore Bronev is left alone in an empty house where his parents have disappeared and his brother was adopted by a nice couple. While on the brink of starvation, he is found by a passerby scientist, Wilson P. Higgsbury. Taking in the child in as his own, he gives him the name Winston T. Higgsbury, and the two have the best family bond… until the shadows came and took Wilson to the Constant. As a teenager without a father, an archaeologist by the name of Andrew Schrader finds Winston and takes him in. Now living under Andrew’s guidance, Winston attends Gressenheller University while his adoptive father remains unfound.
Horizon World - An A Hat in Time AU: The infamous Hat Kid is on a quest to retrieve her missing timepieces all throughout the world. Her third stop finds her in the Subcon Forest, and a hidden pathway leads Hat Kid into an all new area: The Horizon. These lands have a variety of different areas, ones dependent on different time periods spanning across three centuries. As Hat Kid explores the five different locations, she finds different people and beings having been cut from her own timeline now finding home here, and she’ll eventually meet the ruler of it all: Moonjumper.
Samsara’s Ultima - A Don’t Starve AU: Wanda, alongside seven different survivors of the Constant, find themselves faced with the one seated on the Nightmare Throne: Wes. He’s using his place on the throne to cause mayhem with his shadowy magic to harm the others, and only when everyone dies do things… start the way they were? Only this time, Wigfrid is the one on the Nightmare Throne. Wanda finds the whole ordeal off, and is the only one that acknowledges or believes it, too. This causes her to do some digging, and she eventually finds out that everyone is stuck in a loop that switches the one seater on the Nightmare Throne every time, along with all scenarios pointing back to the shadows. This means Wanda has to break the cycle fast, as if she is to become the one on the throne, everyone is doomed. Time on the clock is running out, and it’s up to Wanda to fix the timeline.
And these were all the ideas! I have another AHIT AU in mind but that is still very much a WIP so it’ll be talked about later… But hope these sound interesting! I find them really fun myself—

Okay but like low key I've been obsessed with him lately:
Tumblr media
Let me tell you why.
Layton lost his Leon, he turned evil. The same thing happened to his brother and best friend. He lost his mother and girlfriend for good. That's going to affect a guy, and many people, including myself, have a headcanon that Professor Layton is very lonely. But he does have some people.
His old students, like Carmine and Janice. He has Clark and Brenda Triton. He also has the man who taught him how to be an archeologist, who Layton refers to in as "the best" (in Unwound Future: "I learned from the best"): Andrew Schrader.
Honestly, I wish we got more of him in the games. For both him just as a character, and I would also love more depth on Layton's past that we could get through interactions between him and Dr Schrader.
