It was a hot summer day, the sky was clear and the heat in the city unbearable. A vacation was definitely long overdue.

Your parents had a vacation home at the coast but they themselves were currently hiking in the mountains. You were against it, telling them to do something more relaxing, after all they weren´t the youngest anymore. It was always you who took care of them, that was how it was supposed to be, not the other way around.

However they didn´t see it that way, saying as long as they were alive they´d always support you and take care of you, you were all they had after all.

And yet they always said you were the one working too much. You really didn´t. You loved your job, but compared to everything they´ve done for you, everything they continued to give up to ensure you have the best life possible, it was nothing.

Of course you were grateful! How couldn´t you be? But it just always felt like it wasn´t enough, you wanted to do something for them too, yet you could never get the chance.

Being a police officer made your private and personal life very hard.

The reason you took this job was because you wanted to create a safer neighborhood for your parents. And you got so lucky, being just a regular officer taking care of small town thugs. Every time you hear about your colleagues working on taking down a gang, you shuddered.

They were the ones who lost their families first. Of course their work was noble and they were so brave but you just couldn´t bear the thought of losing your parents.

Sure, it was selfish, but they were all you had. What did you care whether some gang wreaked havoc in the city? Let them. You never cared about the city and its people anyway, never really having any friends that lasted.

However your station was assigned to take down the Bonten, every officer had to work on that, no matter what their job was before that. That really was the last thing you needed or wanted right now. And because you were you, you didn´t listen. You just kept doing your work, finding any excuses to go on a standard patrol, saying you´d look for their hideout or something. It was all bullshit.

“Fucking great… mom, dad, thanks for everything you did for me. If I don´t come home anymore, if you´ll never find my body: thank my idiot boss who thought it was a great idea to take out the most dangerous guys in town. Fuck him! Doesn´t he have a family he cares about? There´s an order in this city, he can´t just disrupt it, fucking asshole” you grumbled, a bad habit you had. Every time you were mad about something you had to say it out loud, though you didn´t care if people thought of you as the crazy lady who talked to herself. At least that way they stayed away.

You heard a small chuckle from one of the alleyways, turning around and laughing at the absurdity.

That, was how you met Mikey.

He wasn´t anything like you imagined and that made him scarier than anyone else you could ever dream of meeting. Something that surprised you was that he didn´t kill you on the spot, neither did he have his underlings do it somewhere else, a clean job like it was usual for them.

No, they kept you alive. More than that: they wanted you to cooperate with them. They knew you were on their side and wanted to keep them in the game so that your parents could live a peaceful life. So why should they kill you? Besides, Mikey always found that interesting. The fact that you, a normal citizen with the most boring job imaginable, you out of all people understood that the city needed Bonten to survive, to keep the peace. It was fascinating to him. Everyone else was still believing that gangs like theirs, ruthless criminal organizations, should be exterminated. But not you. You wanted to preserve them and had such a… stupidly admirable determination in your eyes.

Mikey couldn´t help but become infatuated with you. That was why he came to greet you personally, something he never did.

And that was how you started working together, you kept them updated on the investigation, got rid of some proof and evidence and nobody suspected a thing. You were so incompetent at this kind of work that it just worked. You were doing such a good job for them, it left Mikey speechless and actually for the first time in a long time did he feel something else than utter numbness. He liked watching you work, finding it so funny how you deceived everyone around you, you were just as ruthless as him.

But there was a difference between the two of you that kept him looking and coming your way: you did it out of kindness. You were a genuinely kind person, even to him, sometimes he hoped especially to him.

He didn´t like the thought of distractions like yourself but then again he was the boss, he could do whatever he wanted. He was still invincible.

Now the only question was: how did you go about having a crush? He never gave it much thought, you were different than the women he used for a distraction. He wanted to get to know you, but didn´t know how. That wasn´t something he could get as easily as everything else. But that just made it so much more fun to him.

You were so integrated in his life and in the gang by now that he asked you to be an official member, still working at the police station to help them out.

Of course you said yes. You weren´t stupid, this was the easiest and best decision in your life.

Now you were sure that your parents were safe, as if the Bonten would kill their own. Well they did, but only the traitors.

And you´d never be one, they knew that. Even the most skeptical ones out of the lot trusted you by now.

Mikey was… special to say the least. He was a ruthless leader like everyone told you but nobody told you about the broken parts, nobody told you that he covered up all of his pain and hurt with sleepless nights and bloody murder. Though their murder was anything but bloody, it was clean and calculated.

You liked it that way. It was even more cruel and very thought out. Still, he needed a break and everyone could tell. Of course nobody dared to say anything. Never defy me, that was the sole rule everything was based on.

Protect the king.

Especially Sanzu was loyal to him, not that the others weren´t but he was very suspicious towards you. That was why you stayed away from him, no matter what you said or did he always thought you were a spy and honestly if it weren´t for the others you were sure you´d be dead by now.

The only reason you weren´t was because Mikey told him explicitly not to.

To this day you wondered why that was. But you´d find out soon enough.

This morning Mikey told you that you´d be the one to dispose of any proof with him this time.

Which basically meant going to a vacation home as an alibi, it was near the port and in this time a lot of students were there too since it were holidays too.

Somehow the thought of being alone with Mikey excited you more than it should, it was dangerous, you knew that.

And even so…. Or maybe precisely because of that, you fell in love with him.

There was something about the unreachable nature of him, people couldn´t help but keep looking at the burning building collapsing. Your presence was the gasoline.

“I came here often as a kid” he explained when you two arrived at the house. It was in the woods, but still close to the beach and port. Perfect to get rid of proof.

You didn´t expect him to talk to you, least of all about private things. Then again maybe he just needed someone to talk to, someone who saw him as Manjiro and not the coldblooded gang leader.

Some would say you had a savior complex and maybe they were right but what was so wrong about feeling special when you were with him? About him sharing things with you he didn´t share with anyone else?

“Sometimes I wonder where it all went wrong…” he sighed, a sad smile on his face. You could tell how hard it was for him to even do that. It was tragic, really. But then again he had it coming.

Mikey wanted the world and he got it. Mikey was ruthless and always got his way, he didn´t care about anything else but power and bloodshed. There was this darkness inside of him that was consuming the little pieces that were still left of Manjiro.

“Would you change it if you could?” you asked, eyes grazing his slightly.

“Well I can´t so there´s no use talking about it” he mumbled, his eyes wandering to the surface your hand was resting upon.

Yours was so different than his… so soft and clean, so fragile.

His was calloused, had seen more blood than human warmth and was always cold because who would voluntarily touch it?

You.

His heart jumped slightly as he felt your fingers entangled with his own. This sensation was so foreign to him, he couldn´t help but smile slightly.

You made him do things he hasn´t in ages, smile and feel for instance.

“Sometimes I wish I could stay here forever” he mumbled, looking down.

He looked so tired, he always looked so tired. You wondered if he ever slept. Though you highly doubted it.

“Staying a day more wouldn´t hurt, right? I mean you have to be here once a year anyway, why not stay the night?” you suggested. Mikey smiled sadly, he could do it… he was the boss after all. But he feared that if he did he would never want to leave again. And then he wouldn´t.

“Hm...I guess you´re right...I knew it would be a good choice to have you work with us” he smiled slightly but there was his usual sadness and tiredness in it. You smiled back at him, shutting your brain off for a moment to wrap your arms around him and pull him into a tight hug. Because right now, all the other times, he just looked like he needed one.

And you were right, by the way he held onto you, the way he relaxed into your touch. He really needed this. It were moments like these were he wished that he could stay like this forever and just not go back to his life. But he chose this life and he won. He made it to the top. But as clichee as it sounded, that was also where it was the most lonely. If you weren´t there beside him he´d have given up on himself a while ago.

The darkness was so easy to control around you.

You smiled at him, going back inside and getting the job done.

The next day felt like you were in a different world. It felt like a normal holiday you both knew as children and never ever had since then. You two would eat together, watch the sunrise together, even play in the ocean a bit.

Mikey even gave you his shirt when you were cold.

“Keep it” he told you when you were packing away everything, the day was over faster than any of you liked. But it also felt like an eternity, like you could truly escape from everything.

“As a promise. Meet me here this time next year, no matter what happens, okay?” he asked, he had a gentleness in his voice that you didn´t recognize, but it must´ve been there all his life. The cruelness just suppressed it all the time.

“Okay, it´s a promise” you smiled, taking his shirt and putting it in your bag so that the others wouldn´t see. For now everything would return to normal, whatever it was that you two had would have to happen in secret, in your sanctuary.

The smell of chlorine hit Jake’s nose as soon as he stepped through the front door of the Tropic Thunder Aqua Park. Following Amy to the information desk, he envied the little groups of people striding past him to the ticket window, bags slung over their shoulders, inflatable crocodiles and donuts and flamingos under their arms. Once this case was closed, he needed to find a free day for Amy, Mac and him to come back here. Or maybe to a different water park, one with less murder history.

Amy greeted the teenager behind the desk, flashing her badge and ID. The boy’s brows scrunched in momentary confusion, then he paled a few subtle shades. But when Amy mentioned his boss calling because of the case, his shoulders relaxed. Jake wondered if the boy had done something to assume they were here because of him, or if he was just nervous. The name tag on his orange t-shirt read Julius.

He picked up a desk phone and pressed a few buttons, relaying the information of their arrival. Then he fumbled with his hands and bounced on his heels. “Can I get you anything? A water? Dolphin-shaped cookies?”

Jake opened his mouth to ask for those, but Amy spoke before he could.

“No, thank you, Julius.” She offered him a sympathetic smile. “It must feel awful to be working right now.” The boy nodded, relaxing further and dropping down into his chair.

“It’s weird,” he admitted. “When I came to start my shift, there were crime techs everywhere. And they wheeled out a gurney with a black body bag. I thought this only happened on TV.” He shuddered, glancing off into his memories.

“Did you notice anything unusual lately, Julius?” While still smiling motherly, her tone was ever-professional. The kid was easy to trust her. A wave of pride welled up inside Jake. This was his wife.

Julius shook his head. “I don’t think so. I mean, Francesca said she saw the dead guy argue with Darius last week, but she also believes in yetis, so.”

“Who’s Francesca and Darius?” Jake asked.

“Francesca Roberts and Darius are lifeguards; they work here as pool attendants. I don’t know Darius’ last name, I’m sorry.”

“Did Francesca hear what the argument was about?”

Julius shook his head as behind him, a door opened and a tall middle-aged man with sandy hair and the body of a swimmer stepped through. He wore the same white shorts as Julius but his shirt was baby-blue, without a name tag.

With a polite smile, he reached out his hand over the desk. “Sam Kirkwell, I’m the head of Tropic Thunder. I spoke to your colleague on the phone this morning.”

Amy shook his hand. “Lieutenant Santiago of the 99th precinct, this is Detective Peralta. Is there anywhere we can talk more privately?”

“Of course.” Kirkwell waved them behind the desk and through the door he had just entered through. They walked through a small break room, then down a narrow, cream-painted hallway and into an office. Kirkwell sat behind the desk and gestured at the chairs on the other side, waiting for them to sit before leaning forward and folding his hands on the desk.

“Now how can I help you?”

They went over the details of the case, Amy taking notes rigorously while Jake painted a picture in his imagination, forming the scene, adding everything he’d already read in the file and everything Kirkwell told them. So far, the details added up.

The water park had opened at 9 in the morning. At 9:53, a man – Lars Pearson, 43 years old, Caucasian, warehouse worker – came out of the Disco, a popular water slide, with a poisoned dart in his neck. The first cops on the scene assumed he was hit before going down the slide, but security footage showed him happy, healthy, alive at the top. In the middle of the ride, he came through the funnel, but with the disco lights dancing around and no extra light source, the camera in there didn’t show enough to see the dart. No one followed him down in immediate succession, the next person started the ride once the victim had already been at the end.

Everyone leaving the water park since then had left their contact information. Witnesses could only describe that nothing had been out of the ordinary when Pearson had waited in line for the slide. Nobody had seen anyone with a blowpipe or dart gun. Pool attendants as well as camera footage didn’t deliver them any more information, either.

The victim had no family except for a bedridden father and a brother. Had come to the water park with two co-workers who could also not report anything unusual. No fingerprints had been found on the dart.

“I reopened the park, including the slide, about an hour ago,” Kirkwell continued. “Your people were already gone and the officers said there was no more evidence that had to be saved.”

Jake and Amy both huffed in annoyance. It was one thing to move the body if it otherwise floated around the pool. Any possible evidence left in the water slide, however, they could forget. Kirkwell didn’t seem to have thought that far ahead and whoever had given him clearance to reopen hadn’t either. But they would go and see what they could make of it.

“One more thing,” Jake said when Kirkwell was about to show them the slide, “Julius mentioned two pool attendants we’d like to talk to. Francesca Roberts and another one named Darius.”

“Darius Erickson, yes.” Kirkwell looked at his watch. “Francesca should still be around here somewhere and Darius is about to end his shift in a few minutes. I’ll have them wait in here.”

“Actually,” Amy held up a hand, “we’d like to see them before we inspect the slide.”

That didn’t seem to fit into Kirkwell’s plans, but he schooled his expression into a polite smile and nodded. “Of course. I’ll be right back.”

As soon as the door closed behind him, Amy groaned. “How careless can you be?!” she grumbled. “Now we’ll have to investigate in-between a horde of civilians!”

Jake smirked. “You mean we’ll have to ride the slide to search for clues?”

“Seems like it.” She sighed in defeat but Jake was having none of it.

“Admit it, you want to. Otherwise, you’d just order Kirkwell to close the place until we’re done with the investigation.”

“We don’t even have our swimming gear and– You packed it, didn’t you.” He didn’t have to say anything, the grin on his face confirmed her assumption.

The door opened again a few minutes later and Kirkwell pushed a man and a woman inside. Before he could close the door behind himself, Amy turned to him. “We’d like to speak to them alone, please. Mr. Erickson, if you could also please wait outside while we talk to Ms. Roberts.”

“This is stupid, I already talked to the cops this morning, my shift is over! I want to leave, right now,” Erickson ranted but Jake just sternly gestured at the door. It was something he’d practiced a lot on Mac whenever he’d come out of his room before his tantrum-induced time-out had ended. Erickson reacted similarly while leaving the room, slamming the door behind him.

“Ms. Roberts, please sit,” Amy told the woman. She looked in her mid-fifties, had bleached hair with a gray hairline and her orange t-shirt looked a size too small. “We’ve been told you witnessed an argument between Mr. Erickson and Mr. Pearson last week. Can you tell us more about that?”

Roberts shrugged. “There’s not much to tell. When I left the building last Thursday after my shift, I saw Darius in a heated conversation with someone. I didn’t care because he’s been moody ever since his wife left him a few months ago. I only remembered about it when I saw the body…” She gulped. “It was the guy Darius argued with, I’m sure.”

Darius Erickson confirmed that not much later. “Fine, yes. I knew Lars. That son of a bitch is the reason my wife left me.” He was sitting on the edge of his seat, arms crossed in front of him. The light from the ceiling was shining on his balding head and the crease between his brows was thicker than Terry’s biceps. (So to speak. Jake wouldn’t want anyone to actually hold him to that.)

“I know what you’re thinking,” Erickson continued, “but I already told your colleagues this morning, I didn’t do it! I was late to work, my car’s in the shop, my brother drove me. When I arrived, cops were already here.”

Amy neatly wrote everything down on her notepad. “We’ll need your brother’s contact information, Mr. Erickson.” The man threw his arms up in the air with a huff. “We need to check your alibi in order to drop you as a suspect. We ask you to not leave the city and to be ready for more questions.”

For now, they couldn’t actually bring him in for anything yet. Jake hoped they didn’t need to. Not just because that would solve and end the case way too soon, but also because Erickson would be out and about as long as they didn’t have actual evidence to link him to anything.

After the pool attendant had left, Jake relayed the information to Charles, and by the time they were following Kirkwell through the water park, barefoot and pant legs rolled up, Erickson’s alibi had checked out.

The air inside was warm and humid, tropical, with no breeze to provide a little cooling. Kirkwell showed them where the body was found. The Disco slide ended into a small pool area which in turn was connected to a large non-swimmer’s pool. If the body had been left in here, it really would have been floating around the park by now.

People were coming out of the tube and splashing into the tiny pool every thirty seconds or so. The chlorine in the water should have tainted every bit of evidence so far. And since the murder must have happened somewhere between Pearson’s start and end of the slide ride, Jake absolutely saw no other way than to don swim trunks and bikini and start the investigation. For the sake of work.

Amy grumbled a bit about feeling unprofessional in her own bikini while at a crime scene, but Jake could tell she was looking forward to this. She’d been way too overworked lately. And even though they were basically going to enjoy themselves at the water park, they were still going to do their jobs. It was a win-win situation.

The first three rides, though, brought no new revelations.

(That’s probably because Jake didn’t exactly go to great effort. Amy said she wanted to first get a feel for the slide so she could concentrate on the important things. So same thing, basically.)

(She couldn’t fool him.)

The slide wasn’t bustling with people anymore, so a race up the stairs to the top – so they wouldn’t lose precious investigating time, of course – made absolute sense.

“Ha!” Amy exclaimed as she hit the wall first. Jake made sure not to slip on the tiles as he came around the corner not a second later, out of breath and beaming. “I get to ride first this time.”

She got ready in front of the slide, the water gurgling down the dark tube. The light was green, so she put her hands on the pole over the entrance, leaned back for momentum, and flung herself down the tube. She disappeared behind the first turn, her adorable cry of “wheee” echoing back up to Jake.

He positioned himself, head turned to the side to get a good look at the light. As soon as the red would turn green, he’d use all his strength to propel himself down the slide. But the light didn’t change.

A handful of people gathered behind him during the next minutes, waiting in line and growing increasingly impatient. Was the signal broken? Was Amy stuck somewhere down the slide? Did she somehow manage to hit her head in the funnel and now she was lying there, unconscious, and whatever motion sensor was waiting for her at the end of the slide was going to leave the light red for all eternity?

Okay, maybe he was being a tad bit dramatic. But when it came to his wife, he wouldn’t take any chances. (Plus, he was so eager to go again, and he would be careful not to crash into her and everything, right?) She was probably waiting for him downstairs and he was still up here, contemplating ignoring a red light.

He had to admit, it felt slightly weird to do just that, but then he was already gone. Gravity took him down the black tube, around several corners, water splashing in his face constantly. He wasn’t able to see much until he took a sharp turn and found himself in the funnel. Strobe lights and LED cones in plenty of different colors were dancing across the walls, highlighting the path to where the slide continued.

As Jake let the centrifugal force carry him through the funnel, he almost bumped into a pair of legs.

“Ames!” he called out in surprise, his voice carrying around the funnel. “There you are!” With his feet, he decelerated, coming to a stop. It was harder than he’d imagined to climb to Amy at the side of the funnel, the stream of water constantly tugging at his feet. Not to mention the slippery ground in general. “I thought you broke the slide when the light didn’t turn green.”

“I just don’t understand,” she mumbled, narrowed eyes inspecting every inch of the funnel. “How could Pearson get hit with a dart in here? The whole slide is a closed space.”

Jake had an idea. “Maybe the killer waited for him in here. And when Pearson thought he’d waited for the green light long enough, he went in, and when he came here, all the killer had to do was shoot the dart, wait a bit and follow him out at a safe distance.”

Amy shook her head. “That’s what I thought as well, but remember what Kirkwell said? The cameras didn’t show any unusual patterns right before and after Pearson came out. The intervals in which people went on the slide and came out on the other side were all on par with the usual 30 seconds, give or take. And anyone waiting in here would have been filmed, anyway.”

“When did you even have time to look at the camera feed?”

“While you took forever to change into your trunks.”

“There was a long line by the changing rooms!” he exclaimed and gesticulated, which was a mistake. He almost lost his balance, teetering on the spot, one hand against the wall, the other hovering near Amy to use her as a support pillar if necessary.

“Careful, babe.” She took a step, one foot slipping, but she caught herself.

“Let’s try this,” he said, grabbing her hand and bracing himself against the wall with the other. She did the same and, using the wall and each other for balance, they walked through the funnel to wherever Amy wanted to go.

When she reached her destination, she pointed upwards, to one of the light machines. “This one’s not visible from any angle the camera can take. Do you see a dart pistol attached or is the light playing tricks on my eyes?”

Jake carefully stood on his tiptoes, narrowing his eyes at the small black device above. It wasn’t easy seeing clearly with the multi-colored strobes darting around. “Nah, there’s nothing. And I squinted pretty hard.”

Amy let her arms fall against her sides. “Then I don’t get it.”

“He could have brought the dart himself. Maybe he rode the slide one too many times and went crazy from the strobe lights.”

“Then he went home to prepare a poisoned dart arrow, returned, rode the slide, and impaled himself while the lights were watching.”

“Exactly– no, wait, you’re mocking me.”

She nodded with a glint in her eyes. “I am. I am mocking you.”

“Well, I feel very insulted, now I have to go to the wave pool to treat myself. Maybe some fries after?”

And there was the eye-roll he’d been waiting for. “Jake, we’re still working – okay, now you’re mocking me.”

He grinned and leaned over to kiss her, staggering a little but catching himself in time.

“Very professional, Peralta.”

“Hmm, I don’t hear you complaining when–”

Suddenly, a torrent of water flushed into the funnel, followed by a pair of feet, then legs, then the rest of a young teenage girl with dark pigtails and a red-and-black swimsuit. She eyed the pair confused while the pair stared at her, until she disappeared in the tube again, one single eyebrow raised at them.

Jake realized they made quite the sight, poising on the high side of the funnel in the middle of a dark water slide, one arm each around the other’s back while standing half a foot apart for balance, faces close, eyes wide, and Jake was sure his swim trunks were hanging a little low on his butt. He reached down to pull them up.

“Maybe we should–” Amy started, but that was when he lost his footing, and the fall was inevitable. They went down together, the water carrying them out of the funnel, Jake with his head first. The tube was too narrow, the ride too fast for him to change his position as he and Amy were flushed down the drain. All he could do was splutter and turn his face so that less water got into his nose and mouth and eyes, the tunnel’s change of lighting all but a blur of colors, like a disco lightning storm.

What could only have been about ten seconds until they landed in the pool felt more like a small eternity spent preparing for the end. Shaking his head like a dog, he wiped his hands over his face and accepted Amy’s hand helping him up.

“That was an unexpected ride,” she commented.

“Title of your sex tape.”

“Again, very professional.” But she was grinning, half the hair from her bun hanging into her face, tousled from the sudden wild journey.

He was about to retort with another “Title of your sex tape!” when he spotted something. “What if he wasn’t dead yet when he came out here?”

Amy followed his eyes, latching onto the same thing. “Oh my god!”

Simultaneously, they turned to each other and exclaimed, “The vents!”

They went to find Kirkwell who confirmed that, indeed, the vents were big enough for a person to fit into. Someone could have fired the deadly poisoned dart from up there as soon as Pearson exited the slide. Kirkwell promised to have every employee who had access to the vents at the precinct by the next day.

Jake tried to convince Amy to stay at Tropic Thunder a little longer, but she threw one look at him and he knew he didn’t stand a chance against the Amy Santiago Stern Mommy Look. It always worked on Mac, and it never failed to make Jake at least a little bit horny.

That night, Amy left a little late to Rosa’s as Jake hurried to meet the landlord.

He can’t remember if he ever arrived.

    Edith stood outside Loki’s room late that night, waiting for him to open the door, though with every passing moment she doubted more and more that he would. She knocked again and stood back, knowing she wouldn’t be able to sleep until they at least tried to deal with this. After a few minutes she sighed.

    “Come on, Loki; is this really how you want to handle this?” When there was no response she huffed and threw her hands up. “Fine! Have it your way!” She turned and began walking away, grumbling half under her breath, “Just proves you really don’t respect me after all.”

    Not a moment later, Loki pulled the door open and stepped out. “Do not be ridiculous; of course I respect you,” he snapped.

    “Oh, look; he’s alive!” she said sarcastically, whirling around to face him. “And I’m ridiculous? You put me in a bubble! A literal bubble! All over one shooter. What, you trust me to fight aliens, but not one solitary sniper?”

    “We had no way of knowing there were not more.”

    “And if there had been; how the hell does leaving me out in the open like that make sense?”

    “You were perfectly safe within that shield. I know what I am doing.”

    “And yet, you keep missing the point here!”

    “Oh? Enlighten me, then; what is ‘the point’?” he asked almost mockingly.

    “The point is you left me!” she yelled, losing her patience at his tone, startling him. “You left me behind without a second thought. How is that respect?”

    “I was trying to protect you!”

    “I don’t need you to protect me; I need you to trust me!”

    “I do trust you! Have I not proven that by now?”

    “I don’t know, have you? Because it sure doesn’t look like that from my end!”

    Loki tried to ignore how much that stung. He’d been trying so hard, and here she was, ignoring it. “Well, what do you want me to do, then? You complain about my actions, but you cannot be bothered to tell me what in Hel it is that you want?”

    “I did! You’re not listening to me!”

    “I have done nothing but listen to you!”

    “Bullshit! You ran off and left me behind! Do you have any idea what it would have done to me if you’d run into a trap you couldn’t get out of and I couldn’t help you? We go. Together. Always! For a reason! How would you feel if I pulled something like that on you?” she asked, squaring her shoulders and eyeing him challengingly.

    The argument died on his tongue the moment the words sunk in, and he deflated. He hadn’t thought about that. At all. And once that got through, he pondered her question. “… Betrayed,” he admitted quietly at length, “I would feel betrayed.” He walked up to her, hesitating before slowly placing his hands on her hips then moving closer when she didn’t pull away. “I’m sorry.”

    She slid her hands up his chest and sighed, feeling very tired all of a sudden. “I’m… grateful that you were there, though; I don’t want you to think I’m not, just… There are lines.”

    “No, you are… I will try to do better.”

    “Thank you.” She wrapped her arms around his neck and tilted her face up to kiss his cheek. “I love you.”

    “And I you.” He rested his forehead against hers for a moment, closing his eyes, then stepped back and took her hands in his. “I don’t suppose there is any way I can convince you to stay the night?” That got him a raised eyebrow. “To sleep, I swear.”

    She eyed him suspiciously for a moment but allowed him to lead her into his room in the end, guessing (correctly) that he just wanted to be reassured she really was alright. He gave her a blanket of her own then they climbed into bed facing each other, and he turned the light off with a flick of his wrist.

    “Are you very angry with me?” he asked quietly after a while.

    “I’m not very pleased with you,” she replied. “Back with the bandits you said you wanted me to be respected as a fighter, and then you go and do that. That hurt.”

    “You are right. You are exactly right,” he sighed, “I should have seen that, I just… I did not think. You were in danger and it blinded me to all else. Truth is, sometimes I still do not know with to do with you. It surprises me how much I have come to care in such a relatively short amount of time, but I care, and that makes me want to hold onto you, and that…” he huffed a humourless laugh, “Well, clearly I have not figured out yet how tightly is too tight.”

    “Well, we definitely need to work on that, for both our sakes,” she frowned, “And don’t get me wrong; I know I need to work on how stubborn I am, too. We both have work to do there.” She turned onto her back and let out an amused huff. “That’s two assassination attempts in as many months; I’m a popular gal.”

    He laughed despite himself. “That is one way to look at it, I suppose.”

    “Oh, hey, I wonder if they’ve gotten anywhere in Asgard with those prisoners you sent,” she remembered suddenly.

    “I suppose we will find out when we return,” he replied after a moment. He hadn’t really thought about that attack with everything that happened since, but now that she brought it up, his concerns began to resurface. “Unless of course something significant occurs that requires my involvement before that.”

    “Makes sense.” She turned onto her side again and freed a hand from the covers, searching until she found his jaw, earning an amused huff before he took her hand and brought it to his lips to kiss her palm. “You okay about that?”

    “Why would I not be?”

    “Something about that attack bothered you. I’ve been waiting for you to bring it up yourself, but at this point I’m guessing you won’t.” He didn’t respond but she could feel his frown beneath her fingers. “You don’t have to tell me what it is if you don’t want to; I’m just asking if you’re okay.”

    He considered for a long moment, torn between his instinct to keep things himself and the desire to be more open with her like he’d promised to try. “During the interrogation I conducted, the prisoner said… something odd. It left me with questions. I tried to investigate while we were home, but the answers I managed to find were… unsatisfactory, to say the least.”

    “‘Unsatisfactory’ as in ‘they didn’t know’, or…?”

    “I am being lied to,” he replied with a hint of anger.

    “Well, there must be a reason,” she felt him inhale to retort and covered his mouth with her hand, “I’m not saying it’s a good one and you should let it go. I’m saying there has to be a reason, and figuring out what it is might help find the truth. I’m on your side, Loki. At least give me that much credit.”

    He let out a somewhat self-conscious laugh. “Sorry, dýrr minn; habit.”

    “You’re lucky I like you,” she huffed.

    “Only ‘like’?”

    “Don’t push your luck, mister.”

    Three days before Frigga’s Nameday found Edith and Loki stuck in moderate traffic on their way to an event that Edith had drawn the short straw to attend, playing an asgardian board game that he’d conjured to float between them and she was losing miserably at.

    She swore viciously as she lost again, to the amusement of their driver, and crossed her arms at her chest. “You’re cheating,” she accused petulantly.

    “I am not; you are simply terrible at this,” he chuckled, “Though I must say, that pout is terribly endearing.”

    “Fuck you,” she grumbled.

    “Promises, promises.”

    At that the driver couldn’t hold back a laugh, and she glared at him, trying to fight a smile until it peeked out despite her efforts. After that they switched to playing Battleship, which she had much better luck in. Some forty minutes later, traffic finally loosened enough for the driver to find an alternate route to their destination and Edith cheered, to their amusement.

    When they arrived to the fundraiser, Loki exited the car first as Edith took a moment to don her public face then took his offered hand and climbed out, smiling at the cameras for a bit before heading inside the building proper. Loki stood back as she spoke with potential donors, frankly impressed with her skill at schmoozing. He’d known that she could be very charming when she wanted to be, of course, but convincing people to part with their money was another thing altogether. He garnered some attention himself, though he could certainly have done with fewer people flirting with him, particularly right in front of Edith.

    Once the event wound to a close (successfully, Edith smugly informed Tony via text), Edith was leaning heavily on him while their driver brought the car around back, teasing him about the amount of people that had attempted to give him their number. “Lucky you I’m not the jealous type.”

    “Yes; lucky me,” he deadpanned, then scoffed distastefully, “Those people are utterly shameless. Granted, the court is not much better, but they at least tend to keep their attempts out of your sight.”

    “To be fair, some of them probably didn’t think we’re actually dating; we haven’t exactly been all that public about it.”

    “We go out in public together all the time!”

    “I go out with the guys all the time, too, and it’s pretty well known I’m not dating any of them. Since you’re not all that fond of PDA, it wouldn’t be much of a reach to assume it’s like that.”

    “So, you are saying I should be more overt with my affection? That is ridiculous,” he scoffed.

    “Wow, thanks.”

    The car pulled up before them, and he opened the door for her before getting in behind her. She wasted no time removing her heels, sighing in relief. He glanced at the driver then threw up a silencing spell around them to keep their conversation private.

    “I meant that it is none of their business. Such things are not necessary in Asgard for others to know of and respect another’s courtship.”

    “This ain’t Asgard, Loki.”

    “I am well aware of that.” That got a raised eyebrow and he crossed his arms at his chest. “What do you suggest, then?”

    “Nothing you’d be too uncomfortable with. A picture or two of us together on my Instagram should be enough to get the point across. We make it known, and you don’t have to touch me in public; it’s a win-win.”

    “I… I do not mind touching you in public,” he balked.

    “Yes, that must be why we’ve never even held hands,” she teased. He stammered for a moment and she laughed and leaned over to kiss his cheek. “Relax, dude; you’re a private person, I get it. If it bothered me, we wouldn’t have lasted this long.”

    He made to reply, but just then the driver let out a confused ‘what the fuck’ and they looked over to see a lone figure standing in the middle of the otherwise empty street. More importantly, said figure was holding a rocket launcher that was aimed right at them. Loki lunged forward to grab the driver’s shoulder as he took hold of Edith with his other hand, encasing them in his seidr just as the projectile reached them and teleporting them a short distance away.

    “Get to safety!” he told the driver, who looked about ready to throw up. He looked at Edith and hesitated for a moment before conjuring her uniform belt and holding it out to her. “There is no point in telling you to go, is there?”

    “No,” she replied simply, taking her belt and buckling it on over her dress, “Let’s go get this prick.”

How to put 'It Works' to work for YOU!

The powerful idea presented so simply and well in 'It Works' will change your life. I know this because it has changed mine. The fantastic results that I have created using this idea have motivated me to investigate these principles for 25 years.

I want you to be rich with things that make you happy. I'm going to give you ideas and images you can use to help you be more successful with the list technique presented in 'It Works'.

What I have Done With 'It Works'

My annual income is now 35 times greater than it was the day I first read this little book. I have gained houses, cars, boats, businesses, friends, a family, and numerous creative and prospering ideas using the principles set forth in this book.

In the last 25 years I have spent thousands of hours teaching these ideas to other people. I've seen many people use the ideas in this book to create something new in their life, and I have seen others who are not so successful with it. I want you to be one of the successful ones.

How to Succeed with your List

First, let's take a little test. Take a sheet of paper (or your word processor) and without looking at the book write down the 'Three Positive Rules of Accomplishment' that are the key to this technique.

Then go back and compare them to the text. How did you do?

Did you miss a few? I did when I first tried this test myself.

If you read this book and it never goes farther than words and ideas in your mind, then you have lost the advantage of it.

The key to success with this method it to DO IT, not just think about it. Don??t think that by reading it, even many times, that you will know it. That would be like thinking that you know how to ride a bicycle just by reading about it. In order to master the bicycle, you have to get on it and ride, learning to keep your balance as you move forward. That is exactly the way you learn the principles of conscious creation taught by ??It Works??.

When I first started using the technique in this book, I wrote my first list, and started getting great results. Then after a month or so, I stopped writing and reviewing the list, and tried to 'do it in my head'. I didn't get the same results.

I went back to using the list, and the great results started happening again. Then I got what I wanted and let things slide, and the cycle repeated.

Meanwhile I started studying the ideas and teaching them to others. In the process I learned some interesting things I am sharing with you.

What I learned is that each of us has a spark from the Creator which is our own personal creator, like a genie from a magic lamp. The problem with this genie is that he responds to every thought in my mind as if it were a command. If I think of something with desire, he starts creating that for me. If I start to worry or fear, he starts to erase that creation.

Wherever I put my attention, the genie starts multiplying that attention into a real experience in my life. All of this creation takes place in a part of my mind called the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind is the part of my mind that holds the tremendous creative power that I can learn to tap into and use. However, it has a special way of working that I must understand if I want to use my subconscious mind power effectively.

If my attention wanders all over the place, my subconscious becomes full of half-created thought-forms and my life is chaotic or boring. That??s because the genie is busy trying to do a million different things at once, many of which contradict each other. His efforts always follow in the track of my attention, and until I get my attention going in a constant direction, I don??t get the results I would like.

The plan given in 'It Works' helps me to control my attention, and put that genie to work with enough time and focus to produce real and complete results. It will work the same way for you.

My conscious mind sets the agenda, but I often get distracted by the half-formed and malformed effects of previous wishes and desires. Many of those desires are unconscious, created with incomplete understanding or fear or worry. The genie does what I tell him, but he listens to my daydreams and worries and treats them as commands.

This creative power responds to what I believe. I have come to realize that what I believe is not necessarily the same as what I think. It's easy to know what I believe - it is what I act on. It is what I do. Even while I am unable to admit to myself what I really believe, my subconscious mind is working to make circumstances, opportunities, and events in my life to experience those beliefs.

How do I change what I believe, so that I can get what I want? There is a simple way to do this. It has been discovered and rediscovered by teachers and writers throughout the ages.

Here it is:

I can imagine what I want, I can pretend that it is so, and I can repeat this over and over.

The creative genie of my subconscious mind responds to imagination, focused attention, and repetition. That's what the book 'It Works' is all about.

How to Get Faster and Better Results

Here are things that will help you create more successfully when you use the technique presented in ??It Works??. These are things that I have discovered in the last 25 years of using 'It Works.' Each of these is a suggestion based on actual experiences with using the list. Use the ideas that sound good to you.

The most important thing is to do exactly what it says. Follow the plan exactly: Create a list, include what you really desire in order of its importance to you, read the list three times a day, think of the items on the list as often as you can, and don't tell anyone what you are doing.

For faster demonstration of results, you can rewrite the list each day, even if it hasn't changed. Reorder the items on the list according to their importance to you. Doing this makes the ideas new again, and will lead to more rapid success. It??s also important to do something physical with your ideas, as soon as possible. Writing them out is a way to give them entry into the outer world of manifestation. It creates a toehold for their growth into physical reality.

If you have a tape recorder, you can read the list out loud in a firm voice and tape it. Then play the tape over and over again (perhaps in your car as you commute to and from work). This needs to be done and played in private. That's easy nowadays since you can get an inexpensive tape player with headphones.

I found a little digital recorder that records into it's own computer memory, and then plays it back over and over again through headphones. You can also do this with the 'Sound Recorder' program that is built into most personal computers.

Put real amounts, specific items, and specific dates in your list. Some people worry that this is 'outlining' and delays manifestation. But what good is it to get Coke when you want Pepsi, or Pepsi when you want Coke? You don??t plant strawberries and expect to harvest watermelons. The most important thing is not a particular item on your list, but developing your power of conscious creation.

Do you have trouble remembering the items on your list? If so, it may be that they are not really that important to you. Try memorizing the items on your list.

Are you having trouble finding ten things to put on your list? Are you unsure which things should really be on the list? Here??s an easy way to build your list: ask yourself- ??What do I think about all day??? That is what should be on your list. You may have to start by listing your worries, and then turn each of them into a positive desire. For example, what do I worry about? What would need to happen for me to not worry about this any more?

If you have trouble finding things that you want, try thinking of it in another way. What would you like to see happen?

How will you know it is working?

When you receive an idea about something that is on your list, act on it in a positive way. Sometimes the thing you want requires a few intermediate steps. Be ready to go through several doorways as they open before you, to reach your goal. If you want a car, perhaps you will find yourself creating a new set of tires first, or a garage to keep the car in.

Realize that many of the things you want will find you. You will be tempted to say, 'but I didn't do anything, it just happened.' Your inner mind genie will use the simplest and most efficient way to create the results you imagine. It doesn't care who gets the credit. After a while you won't either!

Remember that your genie is working nonstop, according to the program that you set for him. If you say, ??this can??t be working??, he will do his best to make that seem true ?V even while he continues his nonstop creation of the other things you ask for.

How will you know it is working? For most people it is not one thing, or two things, but the fact that one thing after another manifests in their lives. The first thing you get from your list seems to be a coincidence, the second is luck, the third is serendipity, and the forth is a miracle. Finally after many creations, when your friends start wondering what the heck is going on, you will realize that there is a simple and rational law in operation, and that you know how to use it.

Get excited and enthusiastic about the good things coming into your life. If this doesn't seem natural to you, go ahead and use your 'power of pretend' to fake it until you make it. Appreciation is the oil of the engine of creation. Enthusiasm and excitement are manifestations of your appreciation, and confirmation of your positive expectation.

The attitudes that will delay your success or confuse your creation are jealousy, envy, resentment, reservations, uncertainty, and indecisiveness. Put all of those to the side. The more you recognize your own creative ability, the less you will care about those things that these attitudes have been attached to. You just won??t have time for those ways of thinking any more.

There is no such thing as a negative thought - every thought has a positive result in reproducing itself. Every thing you think about grows in your mind and becomes part of your physical life. That??s why it is so important to control what you are thinking. The key to controlling your mind is replacing the thoughts that create what you don't want, with the thoughts that create what you do want. You do not resist the old thoughts, you replace them by putting your attention somewhere else. Using your list is your key to accomplishing this. Use this physical tool to reinforce the thoughts that you want.

Think of your subconscious mind as being like a sailboat in the middle of the ocean. The sailboat is blown everywhere, back and forth, by the wind, which is the power of thought. It needs a keel and a rudder to be able to set a course and make way to a certain destination. Your list is the keel and the rudder of your subconscious sailboat.

Thought follows a certain structure in your mind. The idea comes first, then the belief, then the attitude, and then the behavior. Your strongest foundation, the anchor of your thinking, begins with your behavior. Change your behavior, then change the attitude that changing the behavior reveals, then change the belief that inspires the attitude. Grab hold of an idea that is bigger and more inclusive than the small ideas that have kept you poor and unhappy.

When you are tempted to tell everyone what you are doing to make the changes in your life, send them a copy of this book instead. After you have received 40 things you have asked for, you can start talking about the process you are using. Keep a list of everything you get until you receive 40 things you have asked for.

Many people find this book, and use it to get one important thing, and then abandon this method. How did this book come into your life? Your genie brought it to you, or brought you to it, in response to your conscious or unconscious desire to create a specific experience, or to understand creation itself. Take advantage of this experience, and make this intelligent, conscious creation a way of life, not a one-time experience.

Trying to control other people and make decisions for them is a misuse of them, and of your own creative power. The most important thing you can make is a decision. Trying to take that opportunity for creation away from others is based on fear, not love. Fear in your mind will generally create things you do not want. Lewt people learn their lessons. God loves them, too.

I learned something wonderful long ago, that will give you freedom. I can??t prove anything to you about anything important or meaningful. However, I can tell you how you can experiment and prove these things to yourself. If I walked on water, you would be looking for the rocks. If you walk on water, you will know that there are no rocks. Using this list will show you how to walk on the water of your life. You will have to learn to politely ignore your friends as they yell: ??Hey Peter, get back in the boat!??

The Toyota Principle

The subconscious mind creation process goes on all the time. You don't have to be good to make it work. You don't have to chant, exercise, or repeat magic words. You are rich now with the results of what you have been thinking about. Your life is always full of something. If you want to be rich with something else, change what you are thinking about.

As you develop your ability to consciously direct your creation process, as you build your confidence and increase your will power, your results will come more quickly and be more satisfying. Don't delay this process by calling the results coincidence. Wait until you have received at least 40 items on your list (by receiving something and replacing the list item with a new item) before you judge the results as coincidence or creation.

You are already a success at creating what you are thinking about - everyone is. The biggest enemy of conscious control is self-importance - which may manifest in disguise as self-deprecation, worry about what others think of you, or the desire to have others approve of you. Don't let your ego distract your from taking control of your mind and your life.

Everything in your life is there because you have asked for it through either desire or fear. Nothing comes to you by itself. I call this the "Toyota Principle" because there used to be a commercial advertisement on television for a certain car company with the catchphrase "You asked for it - you got it - Toyota!' When you have used your list for a while, you will begin to see this is true, and then vast realms of possibility will open in your life.

It's a friendly universe.

If you are of a certain religious orientation, you might be concerned about this creative process and think it is a possible affront to God. I don't think it is. Think of the New Testament phrase, ??Pray without ceasing.?? I have decided that this is a description of what we all do all the time. We pray nonstop without knowing it. Practice of the method of conscious creation will show you what prayer is, how it works, and that it is always functioning. I am firmly convinced that learning how my mind works, and how to use it more effectively to help myself and others, is what God wants me to do. How about you?

You don't have to believe in God to use the list. However, don't be surprised if using the list shows you that there is order and structure to the universe, including your mind as a part of that universe. Your world is a lot closer to you and more responsive to you, than you may have considered it to be. It's a friendly universe.

Be careful about including other people on your list. If you want joy and happiness with Jane or Bill, is the joy and happiness more important, or the relationship with Jane or Bill? Maybe the best way to be happy with Jane is let her go find Bill, and let Suzy come find you. As long as you are focused on what someone can give to you, you aren??t yet completely experiencing love.

It may be tempting to think your success is dependent on the channel it happens to come through - your job, your family, a particular relationship or thing you possess. Time and experience will show you that this is not so. In the meantime, place your sense of appreciation and thankfulness on the Creator within you, who has made you in his image as a creator. When the river of your life changes its channel, you had better be ready to go with the flow.

How fast will it work? Faster than you will expect. I put the number one item on my list last week and it manifested in two days ?V and I thought it would be six months or maybe never. Fortunately, while writing and then rereading that list item, I suspended my disbelief. Even before your pen finishes the sentence, the act of creation has begun. Of course there is no magic in the pen or paper ?V the magic is in making the decision a physical thing instead of just a mental idea. No matter how long you use this method, there will be times when you are just utterly amazed at what ??happens?? to you. (It isn??t happening, you are creating it.) How fast can it happen? Don??t blink twice ?V you??ll miss it.

Everything you think will try to prove itself ?V including your skepticism. If you are afraid of what others will think of you, or of what you will think of yourself, then you may be fooling yourself while thinking you are being completely rational. The world is plastic to the molding power of your thoughts ?V even while you think this is untrue, or don??t have a thought about it at all. Everything lives and moves and has its being in a sea of self-modifying thought. You can prove this to yourself, and put it to effective use, with the simple experiment of work with the list for a few weeks or months.

It doesn't take much time or effort. You have nothing to lose. No one will even know you are doing it. They will just think that you have suddenly become incredibly lucky, intelligent, charming, and good looking. It helps to smile a lot.

Creating complete mind pictures is very helpful. That is another book in itself. Feeling joy and enthusiasm about your mental creation is very helpful. It will start to happen naturally as you use this process over and over, because ?{

Part Two - Reagan Administration Undermined the Constitution: A Cautionary Tale from History

This is Part Two of a series I wrote a few years ago.  The sources for all of the following information are “The Report of the Congressional Committees Investigating the Iran-Contra Affair,” published by The New York Times [Times Books, 1988], and two “PBS Frontline” broadcasts, one aired in 1987 and another in 1990.  As I said in Part One of this article, the public never fully understood Iran-Contra, and this helps clarify what the scandal was about.

What happens when a president. vice president and their administration willfully break laws, run a secret war in defiance of Congress, sell arms to a declared enemy of the U.S., actively undermine the Constitution, and repeatedly lie about those activities to Congress and the American people?  How could those events be swept under the rug?  How could they stay covered up, so that even today the American people remain crippled by their inability to learn from their own recent history?  All of those things happened as a result of the Iran-Contra scandal.

Bill Moyers says, “The basic Constitutional issues still have not been confronted.  Can a president, on his own, wage a war that Congress opposes?  And how are we the people to hold our leaders accountable if we are kept in the dark about their deeds?  What happened in Iran-Contra was nothing less than the systematic disregard for democracy itself.  It was in effect a coup, a spirit at odds with liberty.  Officials who boasted of themselves as men of the Constitution showed utter contempt for the law,  They had the money and power to do what they wanted, the guile to hide their tracks, and the arrogance to simply declare what they did was legal.

Part Two of this series focuses on President Ronald Reagan and Vice President George H. W. Bush’s lies to the public regarding Iran-Contra, with an emphasis this time on Bush.  Not only did the president and vice president have the arrogance to simply declare what they did was legal, they had the arrogance to repeatedly lie to the American people about their deeds,  They did this despite the fact that some of their lies had already been exposed but not widely reported.

George H. W. Bush’s most widely reported lie is, “Read my lips, no new taxes.”  A far more serious lie is Bush’s claim that he was opposed to negotiating with terrorist nations.  The Reagan-Bush team was secretly selling arms to Iran, allegedly in exchange for the release of hostages, and then funneling the profit from the arms sales to the Contras.  Bill Moyers says, “At ten high level meetings, top officials have discussed the arms shipments to terrorists.  George H. W. Bush has attended at least five.  He also heads the President’s Task Force on Terrorism.”

Bush said at a press conference, “Today I am proud to deliver to the American people the result of the six months effort to review our policies and our capabilities to deal with terrorism.  Our policy is clear, concise, unequivocal.  We will offer  no concession to terrorists, because that only leads to more terrorism.  States that practice terrorism, or actively support it, will not be allowed to do so without consequence.”

Even as the vice president spoke, the Reagan Administration was selling arms to terrorists.  Bush knew it.  He had attended meetings on the arms shipments.

One arms shipment around the time of the Bush speech netted $800,000 profit.  The Iranians accepted 1,000 American-made missiles without releasing even one hostage.  They paid triple market price for the weapons.  Bill Moyers says, “The arms sales have become big business, off the shelves and off the books, accountable only to the inside trader.  The profits will wind up not in the U.S. Treasury, but in a private slush fund - what North, Casey and company now call the Enterprise. Nearly $4 million of it will keep the Contras supplied with weapons of war, despite the congressional ban.”

By fall of 1986, the Enterprise was making huge profits, but few hostages were released.  Since few hostages were being released, the obvious question is:  Were hostages or profits the real reason for making deals with terrorists?  As Moyers says, “The hostages had become a cash cow for the undeclared war.”  The Enterprise made $16 million by inflating prices on weapons sales to the Iranians.  A sixth arms shipment to Iran generated $8 million profit, but no hostage was released.  Instead, two more hostages were taken.  The Enterprise made additional huge profits with the seventh arms shipment in October,  The Iranians then released only one hostage, but only after seizing another.

Although Bush attended high level meetings on the subject of shipment of arms to terrorists, and headed the President’s Task Force on Terrorism, he continued to deny knowing about arms for hostages,  Bill Moyers showed film footage of Bush talking with a group of reporters.  A reporter asked, “Did you know about the Contra aid or not?”  Bush replied (this is verbatin): “I sense that there were, that we were sending arms, and I sensed that we were trying to get hostages out, but not arms for hostages.”  Another reporter asked, “Did you not begin to smell a rat here?”  The vice president answered (again, this is verbatim) “Not really, no.  I could see that it was, got a little close but not, not enough to say no, this is not arms, that this is purely arms for hostages.”

Another serious lie is Bush’s deception that he was “out of the loop” on Iran-Contra.  To this day, Bush has not publicly admitted he lied about it.  In addition, to this day most mainstream journalists have not worked hard to make sure most of the American people know Bush lied.  The following official minutes of a June, 1984 meeting of the President’s National Security Planning Group show that Bush was in the loop,

National Security Adviser Robert McFarlane:  “There seems to be no prospect that the Democratic leadership will provide for any vote on the Nicaraguan program.”

President Reagan: “It all hangs on support for anti-Sandinistas.  How can we get that support in the Congress?  We have to be more active.”

UN Ambassador Jeanne Kirkpatrick:  “If we can’t get money for the anti-Sandinistas, then we have to make the maximum effort to find the money elsewhere.”

Secretary of State George Schultz:  “Baker’s argument is that the U.S. government may raise and spend funds only through an appropriation by the Congress.”

President Reagan:  “If such a story gets out, we’ll all be hanging by our thumbs outside the White House until we find out who did it.”

Pretending to be out of the loop on Iran-Contra, Vice President Bush later told reporters,  (This is verbatim) “I saw some references in one of these stories to the nine, nine o’clock meetings.  Let me tell you how it works.  Somebody comes in there, like it’s Don Regan,  me and the president, ‘Anybody hear anything new on the hostages today?  We got and heard of that? Has it moved forward at all?  We’ll ask Poindexter.’  Poindexter would come in the room.  ‘No, we haven’t had a report.”  That’s the end of that meeting.  Then you go ahead and talk about the budget, or talk about something else.”

Bush neglected to add, “and sometimes you talk about ways to get around the law.”

Another George H. W. Bush lie was his claim that the deal making which helped continue the illegal war in Nicaragua did not involve any “quid pro quo.”  Bush’s concern during the June, 1984 meeting was that there could be a problem if the U.S. were to “promise to give third parties something in return” for their help in the covert war, in other words, a  quid pro quo.  The truth is, the Reagan Administration did promise to give something in return in many instances,  Vice President George H. W. Bush personally delivered the quid in one instance and then later lied about it,

This is how Bush came to deliver the quid:  After the Reagan Administration decided to disregard Congress and secretly continue the war in Nicaragua, they needed to keep the Contras going.  They then pressured small governments, such as Honduras, for assistance.  Bill Moyers says regarding Honduras, “The deal is simple.  You help the guerillas bring down Nicaragua,  We’ll help you with weapons and money,  It is a quid pro quo verging on bribery, and they [the Reagan Administration know it.”

Reagan’s team did not want to send a U.S. ambassador to Honduras to deliver the quid, because an ambassador might be called before Congress for questioning,  As the government eventually admitted in Oliver North’s trial, Vice President George H. W. Bush was the person the Reagan Administration sent to deliver the quid to Honduras.  As Moyers says, “that quid amounted to more than $100 million in expedited military, economic, and CIA assistance.”  Honduras agreed t the quo.  In return for the $100 million in U.S. help, Honduras served as a base for the Contras in the war against Nicaragua.  

After he became president George H.W. Bush denied what he had already admitted in open court, namely the fact that he personally delivered the quid to Honduras.  Bush told the press (again, this is verbatim), “Honduras, there was no quid pro quo.  The records of the meeting demonstrate that there was no quid pro quo.”

Honduran President Suazo met with President Reagan, Vice President Bush, and much of the cabinet, in Washington, two months after Bush’s visit to Honduras.  In a May 21, 1985 memo, National Security Adviser McFarlane writes to President Reagan:  “It will be important to reiterate to [Honduran President] Suazo the importance we attach to his continued cooperation in enabling the FDN [a Honduran based Contra group] to remain a viable element of pressure on the Sandinistas.  without making the linkage too explicit, it would be useful to remind Suazo that in return for our help we do expect cooperation in pursuit of our mutual objectives,  You could underline the seriousness of our security commitment, which the Hondurans seem to regard as the main quid pro quo for cooperating with the FDN.”  McFarlane is another source supporting the fact that there was a quid pro quo with Honduras, again showing Vice President Bush lied to the American people on the subject,

Unlike the sex lies the media pursued to feverishly during the Clinton scandal, the many lies of George H. W, Bush and Ronald Reagan involved widespread human rights abuses and constitutional issues of statecraft.  As head of the President’s Task Force on Terrorism, Vice President Bush said that offering concessions to terrorists only leads to more terrorism,  The administration knew what it was doing,  Reagan’s and Bush’s concessions did, in fact, led to more terrorism, more kidnapping of hostages and more killing of innocent civilians in Nicaragua, and they knew it,

The many lies of the Reagan-Bush Administration were not as harmless as Bush’s widely reported “no new taxes, as mainstream media misled the public to believe,  Reagan’s  and Bush’s more serious lies led to much human suffering, bloodshed, death and destruction, often mainly for financial profit.  In addition, those lies threatened the constitutional separation of powers,  Reagan and Bush were aware of all that, too.

During Iran-Contra, our system of checks and balances failed us.  The failure allowed Reagan and Bush to hide their dirty linen and bloodstained hands from the American people and much of the rest of the world.  Those issues will be the subject of the next article in this series.

Ocean au (Pool of Blood part 6)

N/A: An idea pop in my mind last night. Let´s make Kokoro and Columbina interact more. We have so many female leads here...I want to make at least passable their relationships.

The New Gotham´s restaurants of 5 stars have a certain reputation more or less like this, if you survive one day with 5 stars, then you´re the best in your field. So, when Kokoro Braddock ordered a private area for a chat with someone else, of course, many people in the restaurant named Ritzo have all their staff more than curious about such an event.

Is she cheating Angel?

Is she working on a new team?

And everyone ignores the crucial fact that Kokoro can read minds, luckily for all of them, Kokoro has no interest in gratifying their theories in any way. Kokoro is on the table she reserved and in moments like this, there´s a small comfort in being a heroine 100%.

In moments like this, as Kokoro watches as all the surrounder be completely empty, that there are more downsides in being 100% heroine, but, then again is not like she had an option here.

"Heya, Kokoro!" Columbina greets the older heroine with a winning smile and ignore some of the staff, on the other side of the room and far away as possible, who are completely shocked to see Kokoro with another woman.

Wait, before she dated Angel...didn´t she date that chick?

Is she really cheating?

"Columbina, don´t be too loud, and I´m glad you agree to meet me" Kokoro´s tone is formal and Columbina continues that same smile as she sits in front of Kokoro.

"Not like I had a choice, right?" she drops the smile and both women let go of the pretence of a normal conversation pretty quick. And really, Kokoro prefers this way.

"Then, you already know what I´ll ask you...what are you, Columbina?" she begins. "Your dog and cat...are not normal, to say the least, and now you want to steal a Pool of Blood...I need to know if this is not..."

"An evil plot of mine?" Columbina completes to Kokoro not really offended. "I get it. I´m a new person in your group. I get it, really. You´re Kokoro Braddock, you love your family deeply and will protect them no matter what and I´m the thief...and you lost many people in your life and will kill me if I so dare to hurt Meggan or your brother or your niece."

"If you get it, as you so nicely put, then tell me...why are you a thief?" Kokoro asked in a straightforward tone. And decides to press another press as well. "Is your sister also the missing daughter of Magneto?"

"My personal life is my own and no one can meddle, not even you, I´m a thief and not a killer...if you think I´m the big bad wolf ...you´re free to take yourself and Meggan out...as for the last question...NO and don´t press this again" she warns cooly and narrow her eyes as Kokoro tries to read her mind.

"Big mistake, Kokoro, you can´t read my mind, and I´d not like noisy telepaths messing with my mind. My sympathise with yourself goes so far, got it?" Columbina states calmly with a fake smile which carries messages that the telepath can read between the lines.

"I can do more than just read your mind, you know that, right? And Magneto can tell as such..." Kokoro challenges back with implications. Now, Columbina´s hand grabs the fork and almost hits Kokoro´s neck that is impassive in her place.

"And what makes me stop was not your power, Kokoro, remember that next time and is my last warning...leave my sister alone" Columbina states dryly and gaze at the unfamous and powerful Kokoro.

The two stare at each other for a solid minute. "Ok, then let´s talk about your plan. I research what is a Pool of Blood, and if we ignore some really bad slashers" the World does not need to know how much Kokoro loves slashers "one part of this Pool of Blood is still dangerous and I want an extra safer net"

"Cosmo and Jupiter explained what the Pool is. What safer net are you thinking?"

"I have a friend in the Coalition...and I want to call some of them to protection"

"The Foundation is not enough?"

"To me? Nope"

Jennifer Walters Star is a meta-human who has graced with her powers thanks to the Gama ray and it was Super Soldier who took her under his wings, so to speak, and provide her with a way to return to her regular human form and how to return to her green glory.

But, Jen the lawyer, and no one can deny how prolific she´s on her profession, refuses on the ground that if she´s now a green woman...she´ll own it.

"Clark?" her tone is amused as she can even imagine what the older hero will request this time as she puts her files, for a new case down, and dismiss her new secretary, Patty Walker, so she can take this call. " Finally calling me...Do you have anything on Lex Luther?"

"Not this time...I would like to introduce you to someone"

"ohhh...Does Little Clark have a girlfriend?"

"Maybe?"

"Wow, that changes everything. I´ll go and judge her if she´s not good enough for you...I´ll let you know" and she chuckles but adds "in all seriousness, I´m happy for you...You deserve to have someone Clark" and the conversation continues as Jen looks at the reports on her screen. It seems the Foundation needs her help again and Power Woman can´t ignore.

Project Pool of Blood is easily ignored as Jen is teasing Clark for finally having a girlfriend.

Kurt Ryder arrives in his office to research his next story, this time is 100% profession relate, not to be confused with his investigation to one Kitty Pryde and her mathematically proved link with Columbina, when his phone rings and judge by the ringtone it can belong to one person.

"Dr Bright, what do you want?"

"What do you think about knowing more about the occult?"

"Are you high?"

"Yes, but the offer is real" and the mad doctor giggles. "plus, Kitty Pryde will cover this fact as well"

"...I´m in"

"Hey!" Lorna greets as Kitty stomps back to her apartment and slouch on the sofa without any grace. "hey!" Kitty responds back and on the corner of her right eye is possible to see Cosmo and Jupiter doing something beyond what´s natural for human´s mind, but, Kitty is too tired to care, so she let the tentacles and screams on its post.

"Ready to steal a Pool of Blood?" Lorna asked with eyes still on the big screen as she´s playing a video game.

"Leonardo Da Vinci once tried to steal a river...I´ll succeed on what he failed!" Kitty promised with a firm tone and even clench her fist in determination.

"Leonardo wanted to steal a normal river, you want to steal something an Outer God craft for, uhm, let´s say her fun here, craft something and now you must steal it" Lorna look at the dog and cat continuing to do their task, ignoring the fact, the tentacles and screams.

"Yeah...and I´ll do it...because I have something great!"

"A dog and a cat who laugh at mortals´ rules?"

"No, well, that helps. But...I have you and I know together we can make this"

"Awww, thank you, in the spirit of me being the important part of your plan, let´s watch a movie"

"Sure, which one?"

"Frozen 3!"

"Frozen 3? How?"

"I bribe your bosses and they let me travel time to get this copy of the movie"

"Oh my god! When this franchise will die?"

"NEVER. Now, shut up, let´s watch Frozen 3!"

Bruce had no clue what was going on around him. He heard Diana ask that the goddess of witchcraft send him away and that her request was obliged. The words he wanted to say in protest felt like they evaporated in his mouth as he traveled through space and time to some foreign location.

He landed on his knees, surrounded by a crowd.

“Warriors!” a chorus of angry voices shouted as Bruce tried to recalibrate himself after such a forced teleportation.

There was the distinct shifting of armour amplified by the thousands reverberating around him, like a shockwave that was meant to knock him to his feet. All it managed to do was seize his heart with panic as he lifted his head to stare down his foes.

It shocked him more than he’d care to admit when he came face to face with an army that was made up entirely of women. Donning leather armour with ancient designs and medieval weapons in their hands, the female cavalry that threatened to skewer him with spears and swords and arrows reminded him of the costume that his so-called partner wore…

“Intruder,” roared an authoritative voice from behind the readied warrior. “Identify yourself.”

With all due respect, Bruce kept quiet while her surveyed what little terrain he could make out from the gaps in their forces. He spotted grass that was the color similar to emeralds, and trees that sway in the seabreeze. There was the sound of the ocean somewhere close but he couldn’t make out the direction it was in, meaning he had no obvious means to escape the angry women’s wrath. Carefully, monitoring them to determine whether or not he was allowed to move, he took the chance to see if he was enclosed in a circle by their army or if he was his back against a wall of some kind.

No matter which direction he cast his gaze, there were hundreds of furious glares staring right back at him.

“I won’t ask you again!” Warned the assertive voice from before.

Bruce knew that he should not press his luck any further he wanted to make it out of such a sticky situation alive, so he turned back around and replied with just as firm a tone, “Am I on the private island of the Amazons?”

Meeting their demands with a question urged the arches to pull on their drawstrings and the spear-throwers to tug their arms back. Furious, the supposed commander howled at him, “You were warned. Atta--!”

“Heads up!” Cheered a familiar, cocky, unwanted voice the second before something sharp landed in front of Bruce. The way it embedded itself into the ground was so fierce, he took a step back for fear of being associated with the soaring trident.

“Dammit,” he hissed to himself as many of the warriors turned to face the direction from which the weapon was thrown. Thinking on his feet, Bruce blurted out the only thing he could think to say in order to diffuse the arising tension. “We mean you no harm! We must speak with your queen--”

“Silence, heathen!” Demanded a woman with long brown hair, sitting on horseback and armed with nothing more than her animosity.

Bruce met her hatred with his signature indifference when a gust of wind rushed by him. “Hey Batman,” said the Flash, as chipper as ever. “Glad we got here when we did.”

Bruce had so many things he wanted to say to that, such as an inquiry about how they got to the seemingly secret island, or why he let Arthur announce their arrival like that. However, he lost his chance to when Victor landed next to him and filled in the gaps faster than the speedster. “Your magician friend really saved your ass just now.”

“You really couldn’t have picked a worse time.” Bruce said, vehemently.

Ignoring his derision, Cyborg scanned the group and whispered to him nothing more than a number, “Five thousand.”

The army was larger than he first anticipated. Unwilling to participate in a standstill any longer, Bruce kicked Aquaman’s trident down from its upright position and stood over the holes in the ground that its prongs had made. Then, he made sure that his voice carried its signature boom when combined with the distortion application in his suit as he proclaimed, “We seek an audience with Queen Hippolyta, on behalf of her daughter Diana! There are demons being made in the Underworld that threaten all of mankind, and she is down there fending them off on her own! She needs your help, now!”

The lie he told was small, but it helped to sell the emergency he was presenting to the army and their commander. As Arthur was pushed through the crowd with his hands in the air, his shirtless body offending the women greatly, Batman stood tall at the front of the haphazard Justice League in the hopes that his stoic demeanour would prove to them that his claim was legitimate and worthy of their attention.

It took longer than he would have liked - with images of Diana battling those lava rock-made demons passing through his mind at lightning speed sending him into a spiraling state of concern - but eventually, the commander spoke over the silence and the chirping cicadas to decree, “Bring them to the queen’s palace.She will know if he speaks the truth.”

Not one to bask in the feeling of relief, Bruce released an involuntary sigh when his spontaneous scheming managed to keep him alive. Considering the chaos that his involuntary teleportation caused, any turn of events that didn’t end with him being sliced in two gave him a fighting chance.

And, as a result, Diana too.

The great hall of the palace was shrouded in gold, almost as if every inch of the room had been bathed in the metal. Filled to the brim with what he assumed to be Amazonian council members, none of the other women had the same presence in Bruce’s eyes as the queen herself. Hippolyta stood in front of her circular throne, appearing domineering and spiteful as she glared at the gathered members of the League.

The gathered men.

“You four are quite brave,” remarked the queen with a false tone of admiration. “Traversing the Underworld, facing off against demons while some of you are nothing more than mere mortals, staring down one of my strongest fleets and commanding them to bring you to me.”

“If it makes you feel any better,” Arthur thought it was wise to chime in at that exact moment. “I’m not mortals like them.”

Hippolyta cracked a smile, Bruce noticed, but it most definitely stemmed from her righteous sense of hatred. “I know, Atlantean. You’re merely the one who threw his weapon at my warriors.”

No one in the room spoke, awaiting Arthur’s reply. Thankfully, the silence drew out over many beats, which was music to Bruce’s ears.

“Tell the queen what you told me, Bat-man.” Ordered the general from the field. Though he’s never told her his heroic moniker, he figured that it wasn’t that difficult to identify him in such a way given his costume.

“My name is Bruce Wayne. Your majesty, I didn’t mean to randomly appear on your island.” Bruce apologized in his own way.

“No? You materialized in the very spot where a raging purple fire spawned in our field.”

Bruce used her words against her, “You said it yourself - you know I’m mortal.”

Hippolyta’s eyes narrowed as she spat, “Then who sent you here?”

“Hecate.”

The mention of the goddess sent the Amazonian council into a frenzy after a collective gasp filled the space. For the first time since he met her, she reminded Bruce of Diana. {After showering, I walk to my closet pulling open the doors. Hanging there was something I was really trying to not wear or use but for this job I had to wear it. The Suit, double breasted striped gangster suit jacket with wide lapels. It was commonly dark grey and white chalk stripe wool. I’m a lifelong writer, originally from California (Los Angeles and then San Francisco), retired now and living in Decatur, Georgia. For many years I wrote under my given name, Priscilla Scott Rhoades, for the gay/lesbian and alternative press in San Francisco, including the Sentinel, Plexus, and the San Francisco Bay Guardian. I also published poetry and short fiction in a number of literary journals, and articles in various magazines and newspapers.

A few years ago I tried writing erotica under the pseudonym Pascal Scott. My erotic short stories have appeared in several anthologies including Thunder of War, Lightning of Desire: Lesbian Historical Military Erotica; Through the Hourglass: Lesbian Historical Romance; Order Up: A Menu of Lesbian Romance and Erotica; Unspeakably Erotic: Lesbian Kink; Best Lesbian Erotica, Vol. 2 (2017); and Best Lesbian Erotica, Vol. 3 (2018).

Who are you and what makes you tick?

What makes me tick? Writing. I truly believe that the writing life is the best life imaginable, and I’m lucky to be able to live it and to share it with my lover, who is also a writer.

What does it mean to you to be an author?

An author is a writer who has been published. A writer is someone who has pages of written words lying around that may never get the blessing of a publisher. Being published is a privilege. I’m extremely fortunate to be a published author. There are lots of good writers who never get published.

What makes a writer a writer?

Writing is an obsession. Thomas Mann said a writer is someone for whom writing is more difficult than it is for other people. The compulsion to write, no matter how your day is going, is what makes a writer a writer. The novelist Don Winslow talks about how when he committed to writing five pages a day, he forced himself to keep that commitment no matter how his day unfolded, including the day he was chased and shot at by drug lords.

A writer is someone who understands that it takes more than desire to write well. As Christopher Hitchens said, “Everyone has a book in them, and in most cases that’s exactly where it should stay.” Everybody has a story to tell, but not everybody can tell a story. Writers need to learn their craft, to study grammar, to respect the beauty of the English language, to take classes, to get a job at a newspaper, to do all the things writers have always been advised to do. And read. If you’re not reading, you’re not a writer. Read everything that’s good. As Jewell Gomez said recently, if you’re reading only authors who look like you, you’re not reading widely enough.

 Tell us about your biggest guilty pleasure. For example, to you sit naked in your pantry in the middle of the night and eat Nutella with your fingers?

Coffee. I joke about it, but I drink too much coffee. Seriously too much. But still, it’s coffee. I’m interested in watching where the American Psychiatric Association is going with their “Caffeine Use Disorder,” which came this close to be included in the DSM-5 (the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, their bible). Now that they’ve depathologized sexual diversity and consensual kink, they’ve got to have somebody to pick on. Guess it’s going to be us coffee drinkers. I’m only half kidding here.

Tell us one thing that you’re passionate about. For example, would you strap yourself to an oil rigging a la Lucy Lawless with a Greenpeace sign in your hands?

Uh, no to the Greenpeace strapping. I’m passionate about my lover, the author Josette Murray. I’m passionate about writing, reading, words, books. That’s about it. Hemingway said he needed two things in his life to be happy: work to do and someone to love. That’s my formula, too.

What’s your writing process? That is, do you have a particular place you write and/or time of day? Do you have any particular things you do before you write? (e.g. do you listen to music, drink coffee, take dance breaks…)

I usually get up between 5:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. and am at my desktop computer first thing, drinking coffee. I write until about noon, then break, and then take it up again in the late afternoon or early evening. This is my schedule now that I am retired, which is wonderful. When I was working fulltime, I wrote when I could—in the mornings before work or in the evenings when they were free, or on the weekends.

Tell us something that most people don’t know about you (unless you’d have to kill us, in which case tell us something that some people don’t know).

Like several of the characters I write about, I was a ward of the state of California and grew up in foster care. I know there are good foster parents out there, but there are too many bad ones, and too many bad group homes. The comedian Monroe Martin, who grew up in care, once joked that foster care is where they take you out of a situation in which you were neglected, molested, or abused and put you into that exact same situation. Too often that’s what happens when a kid goes into care. It did with me, which is part of why I became a writer.

Is there a book by another author that you wish you had written?

The Silent Wife by A.S.A. Harrison. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith.

If time and money were no problem, where would you most like to go in the world?

Europe. I’ve never been. Back in my twenties when so many people I knew seemed to be backpacking through Europe and staying in hostels, I was busy working a survival job, finishing my BA (which took me nine years to complete), and juggling parttime assignments as a freelance writer. If I had all the money in the world—I’m retired so time isn’t the problem now—I’d travel more and see Europe. And I’d do more Olivia Cruises. I got back recently from a Sapphire Literary Adventures at Sea cruise with Olivia to the Caribbean. If I had money, I’d live on a Holland American ship and cruise the world with Olivia.

And finally, what sorts of writing projects are next for you?

I just submitted the second book in the Hard series to my publisher, Sapphire Books. It’s called Hard Luck: An Elizabeth Taylor Bundy Thriller. It picks up where Hard Fall ends and follows the Elizabeth character. I’m currently working on Hard Line: A McStone and Martinelli Thriller. Hard Fall took place in 1989; Hard Luck in 1996. It’s 2008 in Hard Line, and this third book in the series brings the reader up-to-date to that year in the lives of Stone McStone and Zoe Martinelli. And, of course, in every Hard book somebody dies, and there are disturbing circumstances and unanswered questions about the death. Otherwise, it wouldn’t be a thriller, would it?

"So? Make any progress since we've seen you last, Mr. Nigma?"

Edward took a long gulp of water out of the glass Candace had given to him, all the while studying Thorne's facial expression. It had been slightly over twenty-four hours since he'd come face to face with Thorne and accepted his offer. Not long enough to make any kind of serious progress with his 'investigation', but long enough to have something to give to the crime lord. The man looked placid, almost friendly, sitting behind his oak desk, enforcers standing on either side of him, all with their eyes fixed on him. A lesser man might have trembled under such scrutiny, but not Edward. He was a man who relished an audience. He wet his lip, smirked and cleared his throat. This was the beginning of the greatest performance of his career. "Well, it's a bit premature to name names, but I have come up with a few deductions if you'd care to hear them."

Thorne extended a thick hand. He must have thought he looked magnanimous. "By all means."

Edward placed the glass on Thorne desk, then folded his hands. "Well, to start with, Batman, despite several feats that would suggest otherwise, is a man-"

"No shit," one of Thorne's men snorted. He was silenced by a steely glare from Thorne.

"If I may continue," Edward huffed. "He's a mortal man. He's also a singular man. His fighting style and approach to crimefighting is too consistent for it to be multiple men wearing the same costume. The man we're looking for is also somewhat older-"

"Older?" Candace questioned, standing beside Edward's chair with her arms folded. "I've seen him in action. He seems pretty spry to me."

"Older in the sense he's not a younger man," Edward clarified, resisting the urge to snap at being interrupted again. "Remember, he's been active for a decade, and we have to account for a training period before he donned the cape and cowl. He wasn't born knowing every martial art known to man. I would say that he's in his mid-thirties, forty at the oldest. Any older and his body would begin to break down from the physical stress."

"Well, that only leaves a few million suspects," Thorne said. "I hope you have a way to narrow that down."

"As a matter of fact, I do," Edward replied. "Figuring out Batman's identity is simple, depending on what direction you look at it from." The gangster looked at him dumbly and Edward had to bite back a laugh. And to think, Kristen thought he had to worry about him figuring out he was playing him. He didn't look like he could figure his way out of a wet paper bag. "The real question you need to ask is, how does Batman manage to stay active? Where does the money come from for his gadgets, his car, his plane? His upkeep can't come cheap."

Thorne rubbed his chin in thought. "Slush fund from City Hall and the GCPD?"

Edward chuckled a bit. "While that would explain this city's ridiculous tax rates, no. His tech is a bit too sophisticated to be funded by the city. GCPD clearly doesn't have access to it, or else they'd be using it as well."

Thorne's eyebrows raised. "You suspect he's privately funded. You think one of our rich socialites is moonlighting as a vigilante?"

"That would be ridiculous even for Gotham. I do think though, that he's being funded by them. The most likely scenario is that Batman himself is a current or former member of GCPD or some other law enforcement agency who also happens to be connected to one of the upper-class families in Gotham. Or perhaps he's a bodyguard. The best way to stop him isn't finding out his identity, per se-"

"But to cut off his funds," Thorne finished, a cold smile on his face. "Very clever, Mr. Nigma. So then, how do we figure out who's funding him?"

"Well, clearly, it has to be someone with an overdeveloped civic interest-"

"What about Wayne?" Candace interrupted. "Weren't his parents gunned down in an alley? He'd be pretty interested in wiping out crime."

Edward stiffened in his chair. He needed to get them off this train of thought, fast. "I've personally dealt with the man," he said quickly. "Nice, but a bit dim and no sense of discretion. He wouldn't be able to keep something like this a secret." Candace didn't look entirely convinced but didn't say anything else. "I have contacts in high places," Edward continued. "I can look into this question today, then report back what I find out."

"Good," Thorne said, pushing his chair back and standing up. "I have to say, Mr. Nigma, I'm impressed. In one afternoon, you've come closer to uncovering the truth behind Batman than anyone else in this city has for years."

Edward got out of his chair as well. "Well, I'm flattered, Mr. Thorne." Hardly. All he had done was tell Thorne basic conclusions he'd come to years ago, but the idiot didn't need to know that. "If I may ask," Edward asked. "What do you intend to do with the information I give you?"

Thorne chuckled a bit, then reached over to pat Edward on the shoulder. Edward inwardly bristled at the contact but showed no outward reaction. "Don't concern yourself too much with that Mr. Nigma," he said. "Just focus on your work. Come back here tomorrow afternoon with what you find out." His tone was final.

Edward picked up his cane. Nothing incriminating again and he only had two days left before he would put an end to this game. He needed to earn Thorne's trust and get him to open up. "Of course. Good day, Mr. Thorne."

It was dusk when Edward returned to his apartment, having run errands while he was out in case Thorne had him followed. He hung his hat and cane upon his coat rack before taking off his suit jacket and hanging it up. He loosened his tie and sighed. He'd held Thorne off for now, but he would need to deliver something tangible to him tomorrow to prevent any suspicion. He'd have to give a name. He ran a hand through his hair. Not Veronica or her family. She'd been too good to him. Not anyone who had been a client either. Candace had gotten too close to Bruce for comfort. No matter what, his name couldn't come up again. So then, who? Who was he going to expose to Thorne? He felt a slight breeze waft through his office and he relaxed slightly. "I haven't kept you waiting, have I?"

"No," Batman answered. Edward turned to see the man walk around his desk and up to him. He stopped inches away. "Are you alright?"

Edward nodded. "Thorne isn't any wiser to my game, but I'll need to give him information tomorrow to keep him that way."

"What kind of information?"

Edward rubbed his shoulder. "I...might have said that a socialite is funding Batman's activities to get him away from the idea of unmasking him specifically."

"I see." He wasn't angry, Edward noticed. He seemed matter of fact. "Will you?"

"I don't want to," Edward admitted. "But I don't see any way I can avoid it."

"I thought as much," the vigilante said. For the first time, Edward noticed that he was carrying a manilla envelope. He handed it over to Edward. "This is a fake profile I've put together. There's a picture and some basic biographical information. It should be enough to fool Thorne for the time being."

Edward pulled out the paperwork and looked at the photograph. It was of a square-jawed man with a hideous haircut and familiar blue eyes. He scanned the name and did a double take. "'Coleman Reese'?" Edward asked. "Mr. Reese? Mysteries? Seriously?"

"Thought you might pick up on that."

Edward put the paperwork back in the envelope and chuckled. "Never thought you'd have much of a sense of humor. So," he said looking up. "You just happen to have a fake profile ready to go? You really are prepared for everything."

"I try to be," Batman said. "There are some things though that I couldn't anticipate. Some people I never thought to prepare for."

Edward rubbed the back of his neck. "Was I-" his face flushed. "Am I one of those people?"

Batman was silent for a long moment. He took a step forward and Edward felt his heart begin to hammer in his chest. "Yes," he admitted. He was so close if he leaned down just an inch, he could-"Do you still feel safe around Thorne?"

Edward bit back a curse. "Yes," he said. He shook his head. "Honestly, you're a bit over-protective."

"I think I have a good reason to be."

"May I remind you that I personally dragged you out of a burning building and drove you to medical attention?" Edward placed his hands on his hips and glared up at the Dark Knight. "I can handle myself for two more days."

He nearly jumped out of his skin when he felt Batman's glove on his shoulder. "I know. Hopefully, you'll only need one day."

For such a powerfully built man, he had a gentle touch. Edward craved it more than anything. He wanted to melt into it. Impulsively, he grasped Batman's other hand and leaned his face upwards. "You know," he said. "Once this is over, it would be nice to talk to you about something other than Rupert Thorne."

Batman's facial expression didn't change, at least not that Edward could detect, but he felt the vigilante's hand slowly tighten around his own. "Yes," he said. "It would." Edward's heart leaped up and he closed his eyes almost expectantly. Then he felt Batman's grip loosen. He opened his eyes to see him climbing out the window to the fire escape. "Be safe, Edward," he said without looking back. "I'll be back tomorrow night." Then he disappeared.

Edward stood alone in his office and pouted. He'd been so close. Tomorrow. He'd get Thorne and Batman to open up to him tomorrow or he'd die trying.

Standing in front of the desk, Edward watched Thorne thumb through the contents of the manilla envelope with a mix of impatience and apprehension. It was a masterful forgery, Edward had to admit, but would Thorne see through it? Finally, Thorne put the papers down on his desk and looked up at Edward with a smile. "Well done, Mr. Nigma," he said. "Two days and you've found a potential source of Batman's income?"

Edward shrugged. "One credible suspect at least. Mr. Reese, in his position as CEO of a Tech corporation, has the ability to funnel tech Batman's way. He also donates extensively to law enforcement organizations in Gotham City. I think he's a more than credible lead. I've begun going through his financial records for proof, but it may take a while. I'm also looking into a few other suspects."

"Excellent!" Thorne said with a clap of his hands. "I should have hired you a long time ago. You're certainly less messy than my last hired help was."

Edward's ears pricked up. O'Reilly. Thorne was smart enough not to mention him by name, but that was the only person he could mean. He had him. He had him now. "Well," Edward said. "I do pride myself on my efficiency."

Thorne got out of his chair and extended his hand out. Edward narrowed his eyes, but took the hand and shook it, thankful for his habit of wearing gloves. "How would you like to join me for dinner tonight at the Falcon Club?" Thorne asked.

"I'm flattered, but I do have work I need to take care of," Edward answered.

Thorne shook his head. "Busy man. I like that. Well, don't let me keep you from it. Just come back tomorrow at Three. Depending on what you find out," Thorne smirked as he spoke. "I may decide to offer you a more permanent position in my organization."

I'd sooner have myself committed to Arkham Asylum than have anything to do with you and your organization, Edward thought. He smiled all the same. "I'll consider it. Thank you very much, Mr. Thorne." Edward withdrew his hand and tipped his hat to the man. "Until tomorrow." He turned and walked out the door and down the hall.

It took all that he had to avoid giggling as he made his way to the elevator. He had him. The fat fool actually wanted him to join his organization! Just one more slip, and he'd have Thorne dead to rights. He'd finally bring him down once and for all. When he told Batman tonight, the vigilante would want to kiss him. Well, at least Edward hoped so. He'd be pleased with him regardless. He passed a group of men in the hall walking towards Thorne's office but was too focused on thoughts both vengeful and romantic to pay them much mind.

By that time tomorrow, he would regret not looking at one of the men more closely, for the man had noticed him. Noticed and recognized him.

"Hey, Rupe? A couple of the boys found someone they think you should see."

Thorne sat back down at his desk, reading through the paperwork Nigma had left him. The private detective had exceeded all expectations so far, which left him in a good mood. "Alright. Send them in, Candace."

His office door opened and two of his enforcers came in, half escorting, half dragging a third man between them. Thorne looked up. The man in the middle paled when he met his gaze. He was a tall, well-built man. He looked vaguely familiar. "And you are?"

"This is Tom Dougherty boss," one of his enforcers said. "He used to be one of your guys in GCPD."

Tom Dougherty. Now Thorne remembered. "Ah, Officer Dougherty," he said. "I remember you." He scowled. "I remember you stole from me! Then you ran away for five years!"

Dougherty trembled and might have collapsed if the two men on either side of him didn't have such a firm grip on his shoulders. "Mr. Thorne, I'm sorry, I-"

Thorne banged his fist on the table. "Give me one good reason why I shouldn't have you fed to the sharks!"

"No, boss!" Dougherty squealed. "I can explain-"

"We're a bit past explanations," Thorne growled. He gestured to his enforcers. "Take him to the docks-"

"No, wait!" Dougherty interrupted, with a desperate look on his face. "That guy who just left your office! The guy in the green suit! He's a cop!"

Thorne paused. "Mr. Nigma? Is that who you're talking about? There's a slight difference between a private detective and a cop, Dougherty. You ought to know that!"

"No, he really is a cop! His name's Nashton. Edward Nashton. I knew him in GCPD. Five years ago, he was a detective in Cybercrime's division!"

A detective? Was Nigma, or Nashton, or whoever he was, really attempting to take him for a ride? Was he really that arrogant, or was Dougherty that desperate? "Used to be? What happened?"

Dougherty had calmed down now, recounting the tale. "I used to date his dumb bitch friend in GCPD. I dumped her, she went crying to him that I beat her and he framed me! He's the reason I had to run, boss!"

Now Thorne knew Dougherty was lying. "He framed you for theft, did he? I suppose he magically made a couple thousand I was supposed to collect disappear, Dougherty? How stupid do you think I am? If he was a detective, why isn't he still in GCPD? Was he dirty?" Thorne could work with a dirty cop. It would explain quite a bit about Nigma, actually.

"No, he wasn't dirty! He hated mobsters! I'm telling you, he's playing you, boss! I can prove he used to be in GCPD!"

Thorne leaned back in his leather chair and considered this. Dougherty was lying about the money, that was obvious. He'd say anything to save his own skin. But if there was the slightest chance Nigma used to be in GCPD, Thorne needed to take care of that. Finally, he snapped his fingers and his enforcers stepped forward. "Walk Officer Dougherty through our GCPD files and see if he can spot Mr. Nigma. You have two hours." The enforcers nodded, then took Dougherty to a side room. Candace walked forward, shaking her head.

"What do you think, Rupe? Is he telling the truth about Nigma?"

"Oh, I'm certain he's lying about many things, but we need to be absolutely sure. It's not Nigma being a former cop that bothers me. Half the guys on my payroll are or used to be cops. It's the fact that if he was one, he's concealing it. He changed his name even. Why?"

Candace shrugged. "If he was as clean as Dougherty says he was, why would he be a private detective? Those guys are sleazy. He probably got turned down for a raise or a promotion and quit. I wouldn't worry too much about it."

Thorne rubbed his chin. "A man can change a lot in five years," he murmured. "But just to be sure...Candace, follow him back to his office and keep an eye on him. Make sure he hasn't been making any visits to GCPD."

BoA & Haneul

“Red, I’m home. You’re officially off babysitting duty.”

“Good blazes. It’s about time you showed up. Small Fry is ten times the handful now that he’s walking and talking.”

BoA laughed softly while being handed the twin girls as the pirate had made them corny paper pirate hats for them to wear. She had no doubt that once all her little ones were old enough, the pirate lord would take them all a ride on her ‘special’ ship.

After setting the girls down in their cribs for their afternoon nap, she decided to try and find her son. It was normal for Red to lose the little boy who was becoming more and more like his mother every day. Energetic and mischievous. Wondering if maybe he wanted some cuddle time with his mama, the tiny queen ventured into her and her husband’s bedroom only to find something very interesting.

“Hi, mommy!”

“Taekwoonie----What are you wearing?”

BoA had walked in on her son rummaging around her husband’s dresser drawer that held all of his ties. Having picked out a flashy red one, the little boy had tried to wear it like a lady’s scarf. He was wearing his Iron Man t-shirt and dark dress jeans to go along with the tie.

“I’m gonna go to work with daddy tomorrow, mommy!”

“You are? Does daddy know about this?”

“Nope! I’m gonna surprise him!”

The tiny mother was now crouched down in front of her son smiling in amusement. She had no idea what caused her son to come up with such a plan but it was hilarious all the same. If it wasn’t for possibly embarrassing her son, she’d take a picture right here and now to show her husband. Deciding to figure out what was going on here, she asked casually,

“So why do you want to go to work with daddy tomorrow? Is Auntie Red no fun anymore?”

“Nope. Auntie Red is funny. I like her. But I heard daddy talking and I think he’s sad. And when daddy is sad, mommy is sad. And I don’t want mommy to be sad.”

Even though her son’s logic was a little winded, she had a pretty good idea what he was trying to say. The other night, her husband had confided in her once more how he feared he would have no heirs to his company. She had done her best to comfort him and reassure him but of course in the end, they would allow their children to do whatever they wish with their futures.

“Okay. Then let’s both surprise daddy in the morning, okay?”

“Okay! Roger that, mommy!”

The next morning, the two had cooked up a plan and when it was time for the businessman to come down and join his family for a quick breakfast, he nearly fell backwards out of the doorway to the kitchen when he saw the sight in front of him.

Standing side by side with each a lunch box in hand, were his son and his wife. His son donning that same red tie as yesterday which Haneul had briefly noticed went missing this morning. That same Iron Man t-shirt, but instead of the dressy jeans he had on yesterday, BoA opted for him to wear a pair of black dress pants she often had him wear for red carpet events. Oh, and the tie was tied correctly this time by BoA herself. He really did look like quite the proud son as he stood there with his matching Iron Man lunch box.

Meanwhile, the queen had resisted the urge to dress more.....risque and settled for a long pencil skirt and tucked in, conservative blouse. She was holding a Wonder Woman lunch box that their son had got her for Christmas last year. He had told her that he and his father both thought she was the real Wonder Woman and it nearly had her in tears that Christmas morning.

While the little boy was racing towards the car his dad would have normally been taking by himself, said father leaned over to his wife and asked in an utterly confused tone,

“Is he feeling okay?”

“Yep. As far as I know.”

Taekwoonie’s first day at ‘work’ was an amazing one. For everyone involved. The staff loved him. Some commenting about how they hadn’t seen him since he was a baby while the female staff cooed and swooned over him. Telling him that his Iron Man t-shirt was super handsome. Of course they were all old enough to be his mother but in his young mind, he was the real ladies man.

Back in his office, Haneul was trying to focus but his wife had other ideas. “Bo---I need to get this document filled out and you’re distracting me.”

“Babe I can’t help it. You’re so sexy when you’re concentrating.”

“Yah stop touching-----”

“Mommy! Daddy! Christine showed me how to use the copier!”

Haneul was thanking his lucky stars. One more move from his wife and he was going to lose all self restraint and that only spelled trouble. Smiling warmly at his son, he said happily, “That’s great, Tae! You’ll make a great business man someday!”

“Like you, daddy?”

It had him stopping in his thoughts. The words were lost on him as he sat there in his seat; staring in awe at his son. Did he really think of his father that way? A great business man? Clearing his throat and composing himself, he nodded and said happily,

“Here. Sit in the big seat. Check out the view from here.”

“Whoa! I can see everything! I can see our house!”

“Yep. I see the city every day. It’s really cool.”

“Can I come to work with you tomorrow too, daddy?”

And that was the queen’s cue to get another playfully naughty jab in there as she leaned on her husband’s shoulder and asked sweetly,

“Yes, daddy, can we come back again tomorrow?”

Good lord. These two were going to be the death of him.

Tiffany & Jin

“Babe, I’m home.”

“I’m in the kitchen.”

Jin slipped his shoes off as well as his coat and yes----It was now very plain to see, or rather smell, that the fairest doe was definitely in the kitchen. Curiosity getting the better of him, the male padded into the kitchen to see what was up.

This house. It was abandoned. Had been for years, perhaps even decades. So naturally it needed a lot of work. Tiffany took what money she had saved up and used it to buy supplies. It was then that the two of them went to work on fixing up the inside of the house but left the outside a mess. Why? So that no one would know they were squatters. Yes. They were squatters. But they were living the best lives of their lifetime.

“How’s my blogger babe?”

“Good. How’s my handsome private investigator? Crack that case you’ve been working on?”

It was perfect, really. Tiffany had taken the advice of her boyfriend and started up a blog where she shared her baking recipes and makeup tips. Of course she couldn’t give video tutorials for fear of being recognized but people still flocked to her blog. If only they knew they were fangirling over a girl they normally knew to hate and despise. It was bittersweet and yet felt like sweet revenge all at the same time.

Meanwhile, Jin wasn’t exactly on the police force anymore, but he was still getting to somewhat live the dream. After convincing his girlfriend that he could physically handle a gun again, he went and got a concealed carry and got his license to carry under his fake ID. The great thing about being in the police force, he knew all the tricks and knew how to avoid getting caught.

It wasn’t the white picket fence type of dream, but for them it felt just as fulfilling. They had jobs they loved, a roof over their head that had long paid for itself and its repairs, decent cars that they parked in the rundown attached garage. But now that things were falling into place, Jin had more.......domestic things on his mind lately.

“Dinner smells great but.......I want dessert first.”

“Jin. I have to watch the over. You don’t want the chicken to burn, do you?”

“No. But I’m more interested in this oven.”

She had been typing up an article for her blog when suddenly her fingers slipped on the keys and she nearly lost the whole page worth of work. Blushing heavily to where she could feel it on her neck and tips of her ears, she swallowed dryly and felt her boyfriend’s hands lovingly caressing her stomach.

“J---Jin---What are you talking about?”

“Oh come on, Tiff. You know what I’m saying. Let’s make a baby. I think it’s time.”

“But----”

She wiggled around in his hold so that he was no loner giving her a back hug. Instead they were now facing each other with the fairest doe’s eyes wide and full of worry and concern.

“But this is no life for a child. We’re still hiding from the world.”

“True. But we’re making it work. Think about it. People would have even lesser of a chance recognizing us if we had a child with us. And I’ve already thought about schooling. We can home school them. And we wouldn’t even need a babysitter because you already work from home. Think about it, babe. You know this can work. All you have to do is say yes. You’d look so adorable waddling around the house with our baby growing inside you.”

She had to admit, she wanted a family with him. But they weren’t even married yet. Sure she wasn’t a stickler for tradition but still. If she couldn’t have her original dream life, then she could at least have some of it. And being married was part of that. So like any couple would, she decided to compromise.

“Fine. I’ll give you a child if you give me a wedding ring.”

“Deal. I’ll fly us out tomorrow and BoA noona and Haneul can officiate our wedding.”

“You’ve been thinking about this.........I can tell.”

“Yep.”

Ivory & Taeyong

“I can’t believe we’re really here. In Paris. On our honeymoon.”

“I am just as surprised as you are, my love. Twas very generous of BoA to lend us her whole chateau for our honeymoon.”

The two pale immortals were sitting at the patio out on the balcony while sipping on some blood wine. Of course it paled in comparison to each other’s blood but it was nice for a change as well. Ivory would never forget that fateful night where her lover asked her to marry him right before she sunk her fangs and venom along with them into her lover’s bloodstream; successfully turning him into what she was. A vampire. A child of the night.

Of course she would marry him. She wanted nothing more than to spend the rest of her eternal life with him. And now she could. The wedding had been beautiful and perfect despite it being such a secret. Neither one of them had blood family so the only family that attended was the rest of the sisterhood along with their lovers. It was still a beautiful day all the same. Well......beautiful night.

“I had no idea Paris was so beautiful at night. I mean I had seen pictures in magazines that customers brought in but they aren’t anything like the real thing.”

“Indeed. BoA spoke of how breathtaking the sights are at night time.”

“I can’t wait to live the night life with you every night, Ivory. I really don’t think I’ll ever get tired of it.”

The pale royal smiled over at her husband and felt herself glow with happiness. Something told her she wouldn’t get tired of it either. This eternal adventure with her husband. Her soulmate. Her everything.

BoA & Sungmin

“Yah. Stop laughing, noona! It wasn’t that funny.”

“Aigoo. I can’t help it! I told you to be careful when getting out of the gondola.”

Soaked. They were absolutely soaked and smelled like fish but the tiny queen couldn’t help but laugh her royal butt off. Especially when a small fish had flapped and flopped his way out of the male’s hoodie. Well the hood of his hoodie. Giggling, she said in great amusement,

“Your hood makes a great fishing net.”

“Noonaaaaaa. Shush it!”

It had been her first ever gondola ride. Ever. And it was one she would never forget. And there was no one she would have rather spent it with. This boy----This young man......he......he had changed her life forever. But did he even realize it? Probably not. But still, she was grateful. So very grateful. There he stood in all his embarrassed glory trying to ring out the water from his precious hoodie that he refused to toss for a new one.

They had taken the ride and it was perfect. They got to see all kinds of cool things about Venice since she had stated that Paris was getting boring again. Not to mention she wanted to lend her sisterhood sister Ivory and her new husband Taeyong her vacation home for their honeymoon. It all worked out great.

Until it was time to get out of the boat to let a new customer take a ride. Of course she was pretty sure the young male was the only one who saw it as a bad thing but she had a blast splashing around in the water. She had told him to be careful but the male had lost his footing when the boat rocked a bit and down they went. Or rather over they went. Even the gondolier had a good attitude about it; offering them help to get out of the water despite the fact that he too had fallen in.

“Come on, fish boy, let’s get back to the hotel and get dried off.”

“Yah. I like stupid face better. Go back to that one. It’s less embarrassing.”

“How about fish face?”

“Noona!!”

“Okay okay.” She laughed so hard she had to wipe a tear from her eyes while she lead the way back to their hotel. They had the perfect view. But of course the queen had insisted only the best for them and she wasn’t going to settle for anything less.

Life was getting better. Easier. Progress was slow but progress was progress no matter how small. She was slowly but surely gaining proper weight and getting good reports from her doctor in Paris. It felt like it was getting easier to breathe with every nod of approval her doctor gave her.

Not to mention she felt herself getting closer and closer with the male walking next to her. She wasn’t sure if he was doing better himself but if his change in attitude was anything to go by, she could only hope he too was improving. Since when had he become ten times more handsome than when they first met? She had no idea but it made her heart flutter.

“Look. Are you sure this is a good idea? What if those god guys find out you’re doing this?”

“Those fools are stuck acting like musical nerds traveling from city to city. There’s no way they can weasel their way out of performing their musical duties and tracking us down.”

In other words, the Egyptian gods masquerading around as VIXX were currently stuck on tour in Japan. Little did they know that their punishment for the spoiled brat of a pharaoh may soon be coming to an end.

Egypt. She was going back home. Or at least what was a modern version of her home. And boy did it look different. This was definitely not what she was expecting. Buildings that were similar to ones back in Seoul only not as grand as Korea’s. But she wasn’t interested in that part of Egypt. No. She was after a different building.

A pyramid.

Her tomb.

After her private jet landed at the airport, she rented a car for them to take before having to make the rest of the travel by camel. Of course this didn’t bother her any, but it was quite amusing to see the male struggle a bit. She had to admit, when Aedon insisted on coming with her, she couldn’t quite understand why and he wasn’t up for sharing. Just shrugging and claiming he was bored and needed something to do.

It had taken a lot of sleepless nights but she had finally managed to track down what she believed to be her tomb. Her final resting place. It was odd thinking of it that way. Being alive and all and planning on visiting what was essentially her grave. But she had to do this. She had to know who she was. She was tired of living under another pharaoh’s name. She wanted her real name back.

There it stood. The structure she knew to possibly be her tomb. It wasn’t as large as she had hoped it to be but beggars couldn’t be choosers, right? Stepping closer to the huge stone doors, she felt the male walking close behind her. He had remained oddly silent during this time. But soon enough, they were traveling deep into the tomb.

“Shi-----”

The male never got to finish his curse as torches suddenly came to life; lighting the latest room they walked into. There it stood.

Her sarcophagus.

During their adventure through the tomb, she had yet to find anything that might indicate what her name truly was. As part of their plan to try and make sure the queen couldn’t track down her origins, they had wiped any knowledge of her reading hieroglyphics. So in the quiet hours of the night, the woman had secretly been re-teaching herself her own alphabet. Now it was time to put it to use. Finally.

Rushing up to the casket, she started to shove at the lid when the male came rushing up behind her shouting in nervousness, “Hey! Wait wait! What are you doing?!”

“What does it look like??? I’m finding out who I am!”

“But----What if-----What if you’re in there?”

“That’s ridiculous. I can’t be in there because I’m standing right here in front of you. But there might be clues in here that tell me who I am.”

“Listen......Hatshepsut......I know you want to believe this is your tomb, but what if it’s not? And besides, who cares what your real name is? You’re a great amazing woman just the way you are. It doesn’t matter who you were back then. What matters is who you are now.”

Well dang. When he put it that way.

Out of the Darkness - Chapter 5

Chapter 5  

“The Grey…it…was the Grey…”

"T-t-too…too many eyes!”

“Get them out of here!”

“Is she going to wake?”

“She killed the Divine! She needs to die!” 

“Enough!” 

Headache. Pounding, throbbing headache.

Kara groggily mused over how it had been a long time since experiencing one this bad. She’d have to remember to brew herself some tea when she finally went downstairs. Did she have enough foxite to strengthen the healing properties? She might have to make a trip into the forest; damnit. Better get some elfroot while out there; good to have on hand.

As she lay in bed gathering the strength to open her eyes, she soon realized something peculiar. It was quiet. Very, very quiet. She could hear indistinct voices off in the distance, but with the mages taking refuge at The Gull and Lantern, there were usually voices filling the halls. Was it still nighttime?

Slowly, she opened her eyes, and it was then she realized that she was not in her private room. A wave of concern washed over her as she quickly glanced all over the room she was in. It appeared to be a wooden cabin, one room, with various supplies and baubles adorning the few tables and shelves set about. There was a fireplace next to her bed; a luxury the inn most certainly did not provide. She nearly shot up out of the bed and out the door, ready to track down anyone who could tell her what the hell was going on, but a faint green light appeared in the corner of her eye.

The light was coming from her hand. The Fade mark.

Fuck.

The front door of the cabin opened just then, catching Kara’s attention as she sat straight up. A small elven girl appeared, carrying a box of supplies just out of her line of sight. The elf was looking down at the box as she shut the door behind her, so she didn’t notice initially that Kara was conscious. Kara eyed her carefully as she approached, and when the elf looked up, she dropped the box in shock.

“Oh!” she exclaimed, backing away slightly.

Kara furrowed her brow as she swung her legs over the edge of the bed, eyeing the young elf curiously.

“I didn’t know you were awake, I swear!” the elf told her shakily.

She was clearly afraid, and Kara felt a small pang of guilt.

“It’s all right, I only just-“

She was cut off as the elf fell to her knees and lowered her head to the floor. Kara watched her, mouth agape, having been completely dumbfounded by this action.

“I beg your forgiveness,” she pleaded, looking up at Kara sheepishly, “and your blessing. I am but a humble servant.”

Kara was speechless. The mark on her hand proved the events of the last few days wasn’t a dream…but this couldn’t be real! At this point, she simply decided to muster up an obvious question.

“Where am I?” she asked the elf gently.

“You’re back in Haven, my lady,” she told her, remaining on her knees. “They said you saved us. The Breach stopped growing, just like the mark on your hand!”

Kara took another look at her left palm and confirmed that the young elf was right. There was still a greenish glow, but it had been reduced to a sliver of light. She couldn’t even feel a hint of pain from it. And the Breach was stable too? Maker be praised, she actually did it.

“It’s all anyone has talked about for the last three days!” she added.

Kara’s eyes returned to her in a snap. “You mean I’ve been unconscious for another three days?”

She lowered her eyes slightly. “Yes, my lady.”

She hoped this wasn’t going to become her new sleep routine, but there were more important things to worry about.

“And you said the Breach is stable? So the danger is over then?”

“The Breach is still in the sky, but that’s what they say.” She rose to her feet once more and began backing up towards the door. “I’m certain Lady Cassandra would want to know you’ve wakened. She said, ‘at once.’”

Cassandra. Kara wasn’t sure if she was the first or last person she wanted to see.

“Where is Lady Cassandra?” she asked her.

“In the Chantry, with the Lord Chancellor,” she explained, now headed for the door at full tilt. “At once, she said!”

And with that, the elf was through the door and gone.

What the fuck just happened?

She could get past the three-day coma and even the waking up in the strange cabin, but the girl was acting as though she was trembling before a god. The bowing, the averted gaze, the “I am but a humble servant” talk; where in Thedas was that coming from? Clearly there were some significant developments since the Breach was closed, and she knew she needed to find out what they were. Her best option was obviously Seeker Cassandra.

Kara took a few moments to get her bearings, and the first thing she noticed was her change in attire. She now donned a white, long-sleeved linen tunic and warm brown trousers; not the clothing she’d been wearing under her armor initially. Peeking into her shirt, she noticed that she was even wearing a different breast band than before; she didn’t want to know how she’d been dressed that way.  

She further investigated the room to check for anything that could be of use. To her surprise, resting up against the far wall were the weapons she’d used on the way to the Breach. The bow was a little banged up, and there were almost no arrows left, but the sword was in excellent condition. She made a mental note to equip the latter before she left the cabin.

As she reached for the sword, something in the corner of her eye caught her attention. She turned her head and was met with the sight of a fresh set of armor sitting on one of the wooden chairs. She reached for it almost hesitantly, making sure none of the pieces fell to the floor, and examined it. It was a set of leather armor, complete with gauntlets, trousers, boots, flat pauldrons and scarves for the neck and waist; all of which were dark gray in color. Just as surprising, the pieces seemed to be her size. Had someone honestly taken her measurements while she was unconscious? What was the point?

Rather than waste time guessing, she donned the armor as quickly as possible and gathered her weapons. She fastened them to her back and belt and headed for the door, taking a deep breath before opening it. She’d seen Haven briefly before arriving at the Conclave, and despite it being a harmless little town, there was no telling what it was like now. However, there was only one way to find out…

A rush of cool air brushed against her face upon opening the door. She wasn’t fazed, however, and stepped out immediately as the door fell shut behind her. Two soldiers stood guarding her cabin a few yards away, and they both nodded to her as she approached them slowly. She responded in kind as she walked between them and down the snowy stairs.

It was immediately evident where the voices she’d heard upon waking had come from, as she was met with the sight of dozens of people lining the dirt path. They were all stood behind two rows of soldiers on either side, and at least half of them were making a poor effort to look casual. She eyed them carefully, then decided to walk straight through without making eye contact with anyone. She couldn’t be certain that none of them still found her guilty, though it appeared that the local forces were at least trying to keep them from attacking.

“There she is!” one woman whispered.

“Hush! We shouldn’t disturb her,” another warned.

There were more whispers she couldn’t quite make out, and frankly, she didn’t want to. The presence of so many people whose full attention were on her made her uneasy. Their intentions, whether good or bad, didn’t matter to her; she just wanted to get to the Chantry and speak with Cassandra.

She made it through the crowd and up another set of stairs, at which point she finally noticed the Breach. The foreboding portal still hung in the sky giving off a sickly greenish hue, but it was nothing like it had been. There was no longer a stream of energy seeping down into the valley, and no demons flying in every direction. The elven girl was right; it was stable. She was almost relieved. Almost.

The Chantry wasn’t a great distance away, but she made haste anyway. She passed by more onlookers and guards along the way, many of whom lowered their heads upon her approach. It was the same sort of behavior the young elf had been showing, and she was growing concerned. They may not have been attacking her, but they sure as hell weren’t treating her like anyone else. Kara practically burst through the doors of the Chantry when she finally reached the building, and very nearly slammed them behind her out of relief.

The main hall was surprisingly empty, at least of the contents she would normally expect to find. There were no pews or altars in sight, and instead it was lined with candles and barrels and the occasional bench. There were a few lay sisters and revered mothers scurrying about, all of whom nodded politely as she passed them by. Kara kept her eyes open for Cassandra as she made her way further down the hall, and as she neared the door to the next chamber, she heard a noise that told her she was on the right track.

It was the muffled, yet shrill, argumentative voice of Chancellor Roderick.

“Have you gone completely mad? She should be taken to Val Royeaux immediately, to be tried by whomever becomes Divine!”

“I do not believe she is guilty.”

Kara raised her eyebrows as Cassandra proudly yet calmly declared her belief. She began to understand why no one had rushed to put her in chains the moment she stepped out of the cabin. But if the Chancellor thought otherwise…

“The prisoner failed, Seeker,” he continued firmly. “The Breach is still in the sky. For all you know, she intended it this way.”

“I do not believe that,” she reaffirmed.

“That is not for you to decide. Your duty is to serve the Chantry.”

What a stubborn bastard.

“My duty is to serve the principles on which the Chantry was founded, Chancellor, as is yours.”

The conversation could have continued for hours, Kara thought, but she knew she needed to make her presence known. As she heard the Chancellor start to respond, she opened the door and stepped inside. Cassandra and Leliana stood on the far side of a large table in the center of the room while Chancellor Roderick was positioned closer to the door. As soon as he caught sight of her, he scowled.

“Chain her!” he ordered, referring to the two templars that stood on either side of the door. “I want her prepared for travel to the capital for trial.”

Kara glanced between the two templars, deciding whether or not she should reach for her sword. Fortunately, Cassandra was quick to make the decision for her.

“Disregard that, and leave us,” the Seeker ordered.

The templars brought their right arms to their chests and nodded, quickly exiting the room and shutting the door behind him. Roderick glared at the Seeker, and Kara had to fight to hide her satisfied grin.

“You walk a dangerous line, Seeker,” he sneered, clearly attempting to be intimidating.

Cassandra walked up closer to him, looking him straight in the eye.

“The Breach is stable, but it is still a threat. I will not ignore it.”

Kara approached the table slowly, unsure of what to make of the situation. The Breach was in the sky; it was sealed, but still dangerous, according to Cassandra. She hated to think so selfishly, but she still didn’t know what all of this meant for her.

“Am I to assume that I’m still a suspect in all this?” she asked them, keeping her tone as steady as possible.

“You most certainly are,” Roderick declared.

Despite his confidence, Kara looked to Cassandra for the true answer.

“No, she is not.”

Leliana approached the group with purpose, her expression stern.

“Someone was behind the explosion at the Conclave; someone Most Holy did not expect. Perhaps they died with the others…” She made a point to shift her gaze to the Chancellor before adding, “Or have allies who yet live.”

For a woman with such delicate features, Leliana could strike fear into a person’s heart with a single glance. As her icy blue eyes met his steely gaze, he was suddenly struck with an unpleasant realization.

“I am a suspect?!” He threw his hands in the air in frustration.

“You, and many others.”

“But not the prisoner…”

The statement sounded almost like a question, though she suspected he already knew the answer.

“I heard the voices in the temple,” Cassandra explained. “The Divine called to her for help.” She passed Kara a reassuring glance, and it made Kara feel surprisingly calm.

Roderick folded his arms over his chest. “So her survival, that thing on her hand…all a coincidence?”

“Providence,” she countered. “The Maker sent her to us in our darkest hour.”

The three of them looked to Kara, and she suddenly found herself feeling very shy. Cassandra seemed absolutely convinced that she was their savior, the product of divine intervention. It was…overwhelming, not to mention a complete turnaround from her attitude when she first encountered her.

“So…does this mean you’ve changed your mind about me?” Kara asked her, unsure of what else to say.

“I was wrong. Perhaps I still am. I will not, however, pretend that you were not exactly what we needed when we needed it.”

Kara couldn’t think of a sufficient response, so she simply nodded.

“The Breach remains, and your mark is the only hope of closing it,” Leliana told her.

“This is not for you to decide!” Roderick cut in angrily.

Cassandra had briefly walked to the back of the room and returned with a large book in her hand, stepping between him and Leliana as she slammed it on the table.

“Do you know what this is, Chancellor?” she asked him, pressing her index finger to an emblem on the cover. “A writ from the Divine, granting us the authority to act. As of this moment, I declare the Inquisition reborn.”

Kara was thoroughly confused now, as she was unsure of the meaning behind the “Inquisition.” She went along with it, however, and simply watched as Cassandra walked towards the Chancellor with purpose.

“We will close the Breach, we will find those responsible, and we will restore order –  with or without your approval.”

She managed to back him very nearly into the wall, holding a stern gaze as she made her declaration. He was too proud to show it, but her words obviously got to him. He stared between her, Leliana and Kara, scowling at each of them. Knowing he was powerless in the face of the late Divine’s decree, he left the room in a huff, slamming the door behind him. Kara finally allowed herself to smirk.

“This is the Divine’s directive,” Leliana explained. “Rebuild the Inquisition of old. Find those who will stand against the chaos.”

She sighed as she tucked a long strand of red hair behind her ear, staring down at the book.

“We aren’t ready. We have no leader, no numbers…and now, no Chantry support.”

“But we have no choice. We must act now,” Cassandra interjected, turning to Kara. “With you at our side.”

Kara blinked a few times, trying desperately to hide the wave of anxiety that washed over her. She immediately thought of Redcliffe, of the tavern, and Arl Teagan. She had a life there that she was expected to go back to, people that needed protecting. She didn’t even know what it would mean for her to join this “Inquisition.”

“What is the Inquisition of old?” she asked them. “I’m not familiar with it.”

“It preceded the Chantry,” Leliana told her. “People who banded together to restore order in a world gone mad.”

Preceded the Chantry. No wonder she’d never heard of it. The Chantry had been around for nearly a thousand years; it was hard to imagine a world without it.

“After, they laid down their banner and formed the Templar Order,” Cassandra added. “But the Templars have lost their way. We need those who can do what must be done, united under a single banner once more.”

Kara couldn’t argue with the necessity of a unified force, especially against whatever or whoever caused the Breach. Still, having the Chantry against them, no matter how wrong the organization was, would make it that much harder to make a difference.

“I agree with what the Inquisition is trying to accomplish, but will it gain any footing with the Chantry working against it?”

Cassandra and Leliana exchanged glances.

“The Chantry will take time to find a new Divine, and then it will wait for her direction,” Leliana explained, quite accurately.

“But we cannot wait,” Cassandra added. “So many Grand Clerics died at the Conclave. The Chantry must rebuild, and in the meantime, we will act. If the people of Thedas believe in the Maker’s will, both farmers and kings alike, they will recognize our efforts. And if we are to act without the support of the Chantry forever, then so be it.”

It was better than any answer Kara could have come up with, and she agreed. Still, her mind drifted to her reason for being at the Conclave in the first place, and without realizing she found herself asking-

“What if I refuse? What if I want nothing to do with the Inquisition; to simply leave Haven and return home?”

“You can go, if you wish,” Leliana replied plainly.

“You should know, though, that while some believe you chosen, many still believe you guilty,” Cassandra pointed out. “The Inquisition can only protect you if you are with us.”

“We can also help you. ”

Kara had merely been hinting at her other options, but they made excellent points nonetheless. She knew they were right. She appeared to be safe enough in Haven for the moment, but who knows what would happen if she walked into a city with the mark on her hand? Would she be praised, or killed on sight?

“It will not be easy if you stay, but you cannot pretend this has not changed you.”

And Cassandra was right. Kara’s life changed completely the moment she walked into the Temple of Sacred Ashes seven days ago. What occurred to cause the explosion, what force placed the mark upon her hand, she could not remember; but it happened nonetheless. It may have been out of her control, but it was up to her to decide how to press forward. This Inquisition wasn’t only the best chance to set things right, it was simply the right thing to do.

“If you’re really trying to restore order, as well as find whoever is responsible for the Breach…”

“That is the plan,” Leliana confirmed.

“Help us fix this, before it’s too late.”

Cassandra held out her right hand, holding Kara’s gaze. She contemplated it for a moment, and then finally reached out and shook it.

With that single gesture, Karalynn was now a member of the Inquisition.

Trish Talks

"If you don't remove your hands from her in the next 2 seconds, you will no longer have hands." The raven haired woman said threateningly to the man who she had witnessed place a hand on Trish's arm as the blonde leaned against the bar.

"Jess, you're on time!"

"Always for you." She muttered, staring at the man who was frozen in place, practically burning into him with her eyes.

She took a step closer to the man, quickly placing her hand on his shoulder and squeezing until he let out a yelp and let go of Trish's arm.

"What did I tell you, dude? Never touch a lady unless she asks you to. Got it?" She said, looking down at the man, still squeezing his shoulder as he nodded quickly.

"Jess, let's go get our table. Leave the man, please." Trish said with a smirk as she stood up and watched Jessica unhand the man.

"After you." The taller woman said, still keeping her eyes on the man in front of her, following after Trish once the blonde got far enough away from her unfortunate new acquaintance.

"Thank you for not bashing his head in, babe." The blonde said, running her hand up Jessica's arm.

"Like I would ever do something like that." Jessica replied sarcastically, smiling at Trish's facial expression.

"I can name plenty of times where that exact instance has occurred or nearly occurred."

"Listen, I'm not going to sit around and let guys manhandle you without teaching them a lesson. No one needs to be putting their hands on you. Except me, of course." The private investigator huffed as she sat down at the table across from Trish.

"I get it, Jess. You know I do. I do the same for you." She responded, tilting her head when she watched a bright smile coming over Jessica's face.

"You're damn right you do. You're the most adorable angry person, it makes me equal parts proud and equal parts hot for you."

"Jessica!" Trish scolded half-heartedly, "We're in a restaurant!"

"Watch me not care."

"Welcome back to Trish Talk. I'm Trish Walker and I'm here with our special guest, Jessica Jones, a private investigator."

"We all know that's not why I'm on your show, Trish." Jessica said dryly as the blonde winked at her in response.

"You are very right. I brought you on to clear the air, if you will. We've heard a lot of rumors lately about the two of us and our relationship. Some say we're just best friends, others think we're more. I've heard rumors that we're soulmates, as well as rumors of us being related."

"Yeah, I've heard them too."

"So. Care to set the record straight then?"

"Sure thing, babe. Trish and I are actually soulmates. Lucky her." She said, throwing a wink in for good measure. "And surprise to all of the slowpokes out there-we have actually been married-that's right, married. Lucky me. For 3 years."

"Nearly 3 years." The blonde chimed in, grabbing her wife's hand from across the table.

"Fine, nearly 3 years. Our anniversary is next week, I figured I'd round up."

"Why don't you tell everyone about the rest of our family."

"Well, we've got a set of twins at home." She said dryly before waiting a beat. "I'm just kidding, we don't have any kids. That sounds like not a lot of fun at this point in time."

"Nice, Jess." Trish said with a huff.

"We do have some animals though. And by some, I mean one. I talked Trish into getting a bearded dragon. His name is Buzz and he's great. Way better than some boring cat or dog."

"Jessica has been attempting to get me to agree to a snake now." The radio host said as she watched the raven haired woman shrug her shoulders.

"I think it would be so badass to get a snake. Like a huge snake. I'm still working on her. Maybe for my birthday or something she'll finally cave. We'll need to see."

"I don't think we ever need a snake in the house, but I will buy you a pass to the zoo and you can see the snakes there."

"I mean. That's a start."

"Just think how offended Buzz would be if we had to split our time between him and a snake."

"You're laying it on a little thick there, Walker. Yeah, Buzz is a badass, but I don't really think he cares about us." Jessica said with a smirk as Trish pointed at her quickly.

"Hah! So you agree that having Buzz is not the same thing as a dog or cat."

"Well duh! He's better than a dog or cat. We can go off and do whatever we want! We don't have to be that couple that's all 'oh, we have to get home to feed the cat or let the dog out,' you know?"

"Okay, you got me there, but we will eventually be getting a dog or cat."

"I understand. We don't have to worry about that for a while though."

"Onto some questions from our callers!" Trish said as she winked at Jess and squeezed her hand.

"Hi, I was just wondering how you two realized that you were soulmates?"

"I think we both always just felt really strongly for each other and kind of knew it in our hearts. But it was really solidified before we'd started dating." Trish said quickly as Jessica nodded along.

"You know how soulmates always have each other's backs and stick up for each other at all times? To the point where it's sometimes really irrational?" The PI chipped in.

"Well this was kind of like that. I was dating this one guy, and he was kind of an ass." Jessica huffed as Trish said that. "Me and my then-boyfriend were out for drinks at this bar and he was drunk and got a little handsy."

"And I happened to show up for a drink and saw that, and I broke his arm." Jessica said slowly.

"And that is how we knew for sure. We're both irrational about each other and people touching each other. Obviously not if it's a normal interaction, but any sort of more handsy interaction is a real no-go." Trish added, trying to not make themselves seem crazy.

"Now that we've talked about violent tendencies, let's move to the next question." The raven haired woman said.

"Hi Trish and Jessica! My name is Tanya. I was just wondering what the craziest thing you've done for each other?"

"Like crazy crazy or crazy romantic?" Jessica asked before Trish could speak.

"Both, I guess!"

"Sure thing, Tanya. Well my little spitfire Trish got really mad one time when we were out at dinner."

"Jess!" Trish whined as Jess just shrugged at her.

"Oh please, it wasn't that bad. This woman came to the table to talk to Trish and ended up flirting with me instead. It was hilarious. My sweet little Trish went on a rampage. It was adorable and if I didn't know her so well, it would've been terrifying."

"I think we just hit the crazy Jess story. So the romantic Jess story-which I'm surprised she's letting me tell on live radio because she's got a huge badass reputation-is the time after we'd been married for about a year and I went on a book tour. We hadn't seen each other in about 5 weeks and it was really hard. Until at my next book event, she stood up and asked a question.
