i shuffled my everyday playlist and got cynic by noah kahan (which i actually haven't listened to in a while so i might need to go in and update my playlist oops)

but for ronance, i am imagining that after everything is said and done and there are no more Upside Down shenanigans to be had, the group kind of dissolves after a while with nothing but memories tethering them to hawkins, or at least robin and steve quietly dissolve out of the group

robin leaves and goes to chicago to go to university and steve follows because they cannot be separated, nancy heads to boston to go to college and get her degree in journalism, and the rest of the group kind of end up in various places, from what robin's heard.

and it's not like robin and steve mean to drift away from everyone else, but mike ties nancy to the party so they're all still in contact with each other, and eddie and the rest of corroded coffin end up in boston too after following gareth and jeff to college, so they're all in touch with each other still because of location

but robin and steve are kind of on their own after a while of stilted conversations where they don't actually have that much to talk about with nancy or eddie or the others when there's not monsters attacking them

and drifting apart hurts, but at least robin and steve have each other, right?

and by some miracle, at the beginning of her senior year of college - robin ends up performing some original stuff at an open mic night with her guitar in front of some producer from LA who's in town looking for people to scout - robin gets asked to send some people a demo of her work

she's freaking out of course, but she ends up pulling something together, because she's got plenty of material written, she just never really put it all together like this before

but she records some stuff in her college's music studio after bribing some of the techs with steve's baked goods because steve works at a bakery now and is really good at baking! and she thinks her tapes sound good if she's being honest. steve hypes her up too, he's been telling her for years that she should be majoring in major

she sends her tape to the address she got from the guy and she doesn't hear anything back for a while until she does!!! she hears back and they want her to come out to LA to live there and record there and have a music career

and she's a little reticent to drop out of college because that's so cliche and what if everything falls apart and she doesn't make it?

steve tells her she's going to make it

and that he's coming with her of course (do not separate!) so if things go south, at least they'll have each other

so she gets to LA and she ends up making it pretty big, not right away, but after a couple years, her songs are on the radio

she should be happy, right?

but LA is full of fake people. people who pretend to be rooting for your success, but are actually talking shit about you behind your back. she tries to make friends, but a lot of people hate her guts for making it so soon, not "paying her dues" of living on people's couches while she tried to make something of herself

she has steve and he's always been there for her and she loves him with all of her heart, but she knows this city is eating him alive too

they have each other, but it's so hard being out here without any other support system, without people who love them and want what's best for them

they tough it out for as long as they can, but she knows she can't live here long term without the fear of becoming just like those people she hates

so maybe they leave and maybe they end up in nashville, because that's a music city too right?

and though her agent may have disagreed with the decision, she could feel herself turning into a cynic the way all those people in LA were and she hated it, hated feeling herself become jaded and distrustful of everyone around her

I miss the days when one was better than the last I miss the taste of growing pains I knew would pass - Give me the open mind that I had before

and in nashville, there's a journalist for one of the music magazines there who looks awfully familiar

she and nancy reconnect after many years apart. she finds out that nancy moved here after college, that all of corroded coffin are here too, doing really cool stuff in the local metal scene, that the party are all spread out in the midwest, but no further than a four hour drive from nashville

and it feels like home, this city, in a way that LA never did

there's a lightness here, and laughter here, and family here. that's not something they had in LA

robin continues to have a successful career and she and nancy grow to become friends, real friends this time around, not just bound together by circumstance, but because they choose each other

and maybe it's more than that after a while, maybe it shifts to something else when she asks if nancy's seeing anyone, just curious, and nancy boldly lets her know that while she's been dating both men and women in nashville, but nothing ever seemed to stick, and she's been hoping this really cute singer-songwriter woman she knows would ask her out

robin is a little slow on the uptake on a good day, but she thinks she gets where nancy is leading her, so she asks if maybe nancy would want to go out with her sometime

and nancy says yes, of course. after everything they've been through, they deserve to have something good
