Episode 1: FORESHADOWING GALORE
Was it a perfect episode? No. The pacing is still a bit iffy, the dialogue bland, and important scenes felt rushed/undeveloped. But did it give me hope and/or satisfaction? Yes. Light on action, but heavy on foreshadowing, this episode lays the groundwork for three of our favorite theories – Dark!Dany, Political!Jon, and Jonsa.
As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, I never thought that we would get all our theories openly confirmed in the first episode. The showrunners are giving us the last moments of calm before the storm, and it makes sense that they allow the viewers to enjoy Jon’s homecoming and the various reunions between several beloved characters before they hit us with the major twists those theories entail. What they do instead is pepper the episode with strong hints of these outcomes. In this post, I’ll be highlighting the plot points and dialogue that support these theories, rather than going through the premiere scene by scene.
Let’s jump right into it. This is a long one.
Arrival at Winterfell
After a heartfelt hug with Bran (and thank the gods that we finally get a semblance of humanity from the Three-Eyed Raven in this), Jon turns to Sansa, who had been watching their reunion with a small but fond smile on her face. As Jon rears up to embrace his “sister”, the camera makes sure to cut away from them to focus on Daenerys and Jorah, watching them from a distance. Bran is kept in frame, observing their reactions. Sansa too, turns her gaze on the newcomers, even as she wraps her arms around Jon.
Tumblr media
I will admit to being disappointed that the reunion hug between Jon and Sansa was much briefer and less intense than what we got in the HBO trailer, but in retrospect, that fact makes me go “hmm”. After all, they chose that particular sequence to be the first and only snippet from S8 to show in that trailer, despite the episode’s truncated version of the hug (or any other scene from the season, really) being a possible option. A photo of this scene shot from yet another angle from a Spanish(?) publication was circulating the internet only days ago. D&D want us to pay special attention to the relationship between Jon and Sansa.
Podrick Dany certainly is.
Dany and Sansa eye each other from across the courtyard, before the former approaches the Starks. As Lyanna Mormont and Lord Royce stare at her with suspicion, Jon makes introductions.
“My sister, Sansa Stark, the Lady of Winterfell.”
“Thank you for inviting us into your home, Lady Stark,” Daenerys says with a fixed smile. “The North is as beautiful as your brother claimed, as are you.” (You know, one way of interpreting this line was that it was Jon who told Dany that Sansa is beautiful. Because, well. She is.)
Sansa is not impressed by the transparent attempt at flattery. She looks Dany up and down and leans back slightly in thinly-veiled disdain, but her words and voice are perfectly civil. “Winterfell is yours, your Grace.” Take note: neither she nor anyone else in the courtyard bends the knee to their would-be queen.
Daenerys doesn’t buy Sansa’s act for a second, but Bran doesn’t have time for this catfight and tells everyone what’s what. The Wall has fallen, and the Army of the Dead (+ dragon) are marching to Winterfell. That sobers them up quickly.
Meeting the Lords
Everyone is gathered in the Great Hall. Pay attention to the framing. At the head table, Sansa has been relegated to Jon’s right, where Davos, as the Hand of the King, used to sit. Daenerys has taken up Sansa’s former seat to his left, where the Lady of Winterfell typically sits. In this first shot, however, Dany is standing by the fireplace, leaving a visual and metaphorical gap between the Northern pair and Team Dany, represented by Tyrion, who is seated at the far end of the table.
Tumblr media
As acting leader of Winterfell, Sansa is the one running the meeting. She establishes the fact that she has called on all the banners to retreat to Winterfell, and asks for an update from Lord Umber, last of that once-mighty House. A young boy no older than Bran was in season 1 pops his head out from behind one of the nameless Lords. He is small, and cute, and has been singled out by the script, so clearly he is doomed.
He addresses first Sansa - “We need more horses and wagons, my Lady,” – then Jon – “and my Lord,” – who flashes him a quick smile – “and my Queen.” – and only then Daenerys, who does not love being third on this list. “Sorry,” apologizes awkwardly. His business is sorted out, and he is sent off.
Jon instructs Maester Wolkan to send ravens to the Night’s Watch to summon them to Winterfell. “At once, Your Grace,” says the man, out of habit, probably, but it’s all the excuse Lyanna Mormont needs to stand up to sass Jon for renouncing his crown (mostly because D&D have designated her the improbable mouthpiece of the North and have not bothered to introduce us to any of the other lords).
Jon tries to make his case, but nobody is convinced, not even when Tyrion tags himself in. As he tries to sway the Northern lords, the camera cuts to the other three – Jon in between the two women, Stark and Targaryen, black and white. They really couldn’t be more obvious about the symbolism here, but in case you missed it, the showrunners give us more evidence that we’re not about to get The Hair Braiding That Was Promised.
Tumblr media
Sansa is facing the lords, addressing Tyrion, but is clearly speaking to Daenerys when she asks just how Winterfell is supposed to feed Team Dany’s massive armies and the dragons. Like the responsible leader that she is – take notes, kiddos – Sansa had spent the past few months stockpiling supplies to help her people through winter. Was the North expected to support these newcomers too? “What do dragons eat, anyway?”
“Whatever they want,” says Dany.
The two women look at each other with no further pretense at friendliness. Battle lines have been drawn.
(Jon sits there, pretending not to notice.)
Tumblr media
A Proposed Proposal
Davos, Varys and Tyrion are discussing how to salvage the alliance between their respective sides. Davos tells the others that Northerners do not trust easily, that this trust needs to be earned. But he is hopeful that it can happen. “On the off chance that we survive the Night King, what if the Seven Kingdoms, for once in their whole shit history, were ruled by a just woman and an honorable man?”
He is talking about a possible marriage between Jon and Dany, but at this point the audience knows the truth of their relationship, and by the end of the episode – spoiler – Jon does too. Whether or not the GA realizes it yet, this makes the conversation equally applicable to the Jonsa side of the triangle.
Plus, le gasp! A Stark-Targaryen marriage? How dreadfully romantic.*
*Okay, I am actually strongly anti-Rhaegar, but the show plays them as some kind of grand romantic pairing so I will try to contain my antipathy for the purposes of this review.
A Darker Turn
Down at the courtyard, Daenerys is feeling somewhat put upon.
“Your sister doesn’t like me.”
Jon tries to mollify her. “She doesn’t know you. If it makes you feel any better, she didn’t like me either when we were growing up.”
“She doesn’t need to be my friend. But I am her queen. If she can’t respect me…”
WHAT, DANY? IF SANSA CAN’T RESPECT YOU, WHAT WILL YOU DO?
We’ve been saying it for a long while now, but guys. Dark!Dany is coming. While certain elements of the fandom persist in denying the obvious trajectory of her character arc, the foreboding undertone of this line is hard to ignore. What made this even more chilling was that she said this to Jon, a member of her family, who doesn’t yet know at this point in the episode what Dany’s extreme reaction tends to be for insubordination.
(Oh, but we know.)
When Sam learns of what Daenerys did to his father and brother, he could barely hold it together long enough to excuse himself from her presence before falling apart. Despite what Dany stans would have you think, this is a perfectly human and normal reaction to hearing such dreadful news. Also human and understandable? Mistrusting the kind of ruler who would execute a man for not bending the knee. Especially since Sam has personally seen a more humane sort of leadership before in Jon, who he later urges to take up his birthright as the true heir to the Iron Throne.
Other metas have discussed Dany’s approach to leadership and her increasingly draconian (an apt word, no?) attitude towards what she feels is her rightful position as Queen of the 7K. That she can and will take what is hers. A sense of entitlement not dissimilar to that which she attributed to her dragons earlier in that public display which did not endear her to her Northern subjects…
Side note: We’ve seen the indiscriminate destruction that an unchecked dragon can reap before when one of them – then only half-grown – killed the young daughter of a goatherd in Meereen. We even received a handy reminder of this straight from the mouth of Dany’s staunchest supporter and ally only in the episode before this one: “Dragons don’t understand the difference between what is theirs and what isn’t. Land, livestock, children…letting them roam free around the city was a problem.” – Jorah Mormont, S07E07.
And because it hasn’t been hammered into our heads enough, we are reminded of this again later on, when her Dothraki riders list exactly how much her dragons had consumed just that same day (“only eighteen goats and eleven sheep”, which apparently means “the dragons are barely eating”). This is followed by a powerful shot of said dragons surrounded by the charred bones of the livestock that could have fed dozens of people.
The same people who cowered as the dragons flew over Mole’s Town, and whose fear she appeared to relish.
Foreshadowing much?
That Dragon Flying Scene
Oh boy. I’ll be honest. I wasn’t excited to see this one at all. In the end it was both more and less awful than I imagined it would be. The dragon riding scene is bound to be controversial. Thrilling to some, pandering of the worst kind to others. To me, it smacks of fanservice, but let’s give the show the benefit of the doubt and try to parse its storytelling purpose in the greater scheme of things.
Despite Daenerys’ unsubtle threat towards Sansa in the previous scene – which Jon was conveniently prevented from addressing due to the interruption of the Dothraki – and the sight of Drogon and Rhaegal apparently sulking whilst surrounded by the remains of the food they are “barely eating”, the showrunners made the odd decision to play this scene with a note of levity.
Out of nowhere, Dany oh-so-casually encourages her lover to try riding her dragon, a foolhardy decision based on what, exactly? The one time Jon had a moment with one of her “gorgeous beast(s)”? Dany teases him about his initial reluctance, and laughs at his ungraceful attempts to hang on as the two dragons freewheel over the snow-covered lands of the North before landing in front of a beautiful waterfall for a “romantic” moment.
In dialogue calling back to Jon and Ygritte’s famous cave scene (listen, are D&D just going to troll us by recycling  all of Jon’s best hits?):
Tumblr media
“We could stay a thousand years, says Daenerys, looking back at Jon. “No one would find us.”
“We’d be pretty old,” says Jon with uncharacteristic humor.
I believe Jon’s lightheartedness stems as much from his being home with his family at long last as the thrill of dragonriding with a pretty girl by his side. The two flirt using cheesy lines straight out of bad fanfiction before sharing a kiss which I suppose will please the stans.
Not me, though. Romantic music playing in the background or not, like in boatbang, the supposed passion of the moment is interrupted by a third party which makes the whole thing awkward. The final shot of Jon’s eyes widening as he sees Rhaegal staring directly at him as he kisses the Dragon Queen made me snort, but it is unclear whether it was played for a laugh, is meant to underline the awkwardness of this romance, or be an ominous portent of the revelations to come.
Tumblr media
And Now For the Good Stuff
That terrible unnecessary Disneyfied brightly lit, panoramic, even mildly comedic sequence contrasted sharply with the scene between Jon and Sansa only minutes later. We are treated to a Jonsa staple: a warm, candlelit scene full of tension, fluttering eyelashes, and heaving bosoms. This time, the air is shimmering with a new emotion – jealousy.
The two start off by discussing a message from Lord Glover, who “wishes (them) good fortune but he’s staying in Deepwood Motte with his men.” This immediately sparks an argument between them about Jon having bent the knee. They’ve had variations of this fight before, and to be honest, it’s a little tired. While I fully understand Sansa’s reservations about the presence of Dany and her armies in the North in terms of logistics, I tend to be more sympathetic to Jon’s insistence that the discussion on Northern independence needs to take a back seat for the moment given the gravity of the threats they are facing. But Sansa clings stubbornly to this old argument, and she (rather unfairly) lays the blame for Lord Glover’s desertion at Jon’s feet (let’s blame who is really at fault here, Sansa – the disloyal lord himself).
But of course, that’s not really what they’re fighting about.
“You didn’t tell me you were going to abandon your crown,” she says, voice shaking with anger as she turns her back on Jon.
Jon, frustrated, moves several steps closer. “I never wanted a crown. All I wanted was to protect the North. I brought two armies home with me, two dragons.”
Sansa spins around. “And a Targaryen queen?” she spits out.
Ah, and here we come to what appears to be the true cause of her wrath. Jon reminds Sansa that without Daenerys (and her martial strength), they don’t stand a chance against the Army of the Dead. Sansa is silent. She cannot argue the need for the armies and the dragons, but she takes particular exception to the woman who leads them. Why, Sansa? TELL US WHY.
It’s in their eyes as much as their words.
Jon heaves a deep sigh, closes his eyes. “Do you have any faith in me at all?” (Y’all, this line just about broke my heart cause he just wants her to love trust him.)
Tumblr media
Sansa’s eyes are soft and slightly glassy. “You know I do.”
Tumblr media
Jon takes another step or two towards Sansa, never breaking their gaze. “She’ll be a good queen. For all of us.” His eyes move away briefly. “She’s not her father.”
Sansa looks down, gathering herself with a deep breath. “No, she’s much prettier.”
Jon gives a pained smile of acknowledgment. It is his turn to avoid her stare.
“Did you bend the knee to save the North?” Sansa asks him, her eyes unfocused. “Or because you love her?”
Jon glances up at Sansa, but doesn’t respond.
END SCENE.
(Let’s give a standing ovation to Sophie and Kit for acting the hell out of this scene. I want a hundred gifs of this, people. Please get on it.)
The subtext is rich, rich, rich, my Jonsas. The dream is still alive.
One Last Thought - The Importance of Sansa Stark
Nothing made me happier than seeing our Queen in the North Lady of Winterfell given all the credit and respect that is her due after seasons of anti bullshit. See:
The people’s deference to her position and the role that she plays in the North
Tyrion’s acknowledgment of her survival skills - “Many underestimated you. Most of them are dead now.”
Arya’s steadfast defense of her - “She’s the smartest person I ever met.” - when Jon (Jon???) himself was expressing frustration towards her (check out @athimbleful 's recent ask for an explanation for Jon’s behavior in this scene)
Even Dany’s behaviour towards Sansa (first with that cringey introduction), and later when she singles her out for not “respecting” her, despite the fact that none of the Northern lords were showing her any warmth is an indication of her awareness of Sansa’s alpha status, which is right and just and exactly as it should be.
As recent promo materials, cast interviews, etc. seem be strongly pro-Sansa, I am reasonably optimistic that this all bodes well for our girl. For that alone, I will breathe a little easier...
...at least for one more week.

What do promos  tell us? - Characters and their journeys
It’s been a couple of days since a new teaser dropped for s8
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We also had this
Tumblr media
Putting these two little teasers together, we get what will be one of the two major plots of the season: D@ny in Winterfell (which is, in its very nature, politically-driven)
A thing I want to point out: teasers like these ones (clips) are very malleable. People in editing can make it look like one thing before the season premieres, and then, it’s another thing entirely (I’m not talking about these teasers in particular, because the fandom, at least the part of fandom I interact with, was right in their theories and assumptions. I’m talking in general. Go watch the trailers for previous seasons, especially the early ones, they can be misleading, and that’s actually its purpose)
Ok, with that out of the way...
Given season 8 is the final season, it’s already established that we know these characters: their way of acting, of thinking, of approaching things.
For example:
We got the ones that are involved in the Big Game, the politicians/diplomats (Tyrion, Varys, Sansa, Cersei, Davos, Missandei)
We got the ones involved with prophecy/magical elements (D@ny, Jon, Bran, Melisandre, Night King)
We got the warriors (Jaime, Brienne, Arya, the Hound, Tormund, Beric and the Brotherhood, Gendry, Yara, the armies of men and the dead)
We got the loose canons (Euron and Bronn, though I really wish Bronn will somehow ride north with Jaime)
We got the unlikely heroes (Theon, Sam and Pod)
We got to a point where we know these characters’ traits and faults, we know what they’re good at and what their bad at.
But how were these characters introduced?
(I will focus on promotional pictures for this. This meta will focus on Jon and D@enrys, since they are two of the main players used to promote the series before it premiered)
So let’s start with Jon:
Jon Snow-Season 1
Tumblr media
This is the first promo pic we had of Jon Snow. It has a quote of the oath of the Night’s Watch, instantly painting him, at the eyes of the audience, as a warrior, as a defender of men. It clearly contrast with the one for Cersei, which paints her at the eyes of the audience as a cunning, not-to-be-trusted politician
Tumblr media
Now let’s go to Season 2:
Tumblr media
After all that has happened in S1 (i.e: the political intrigue of the South), we see Jon is still tied to the Night’s Watch, still tied to his vows, as another part of the oath is quoted on his poster. His poster is apolitical, with no ties to all the political upheaval that Westeros is going through. He’s still a defender of men, a knight on a noble crusade. Only now, he will learn that there is more than one way to defend people. He will learn that information is as valuable as a sword when it comes to battle. It is from this season onward, that Jon will learn how to be a strategist. It is in the season 2 finale that he infiltrates the Wildling army under Qhorin’s command. No matter how things might seem, he’s still a sworn brother of the Night’s Watch, the watcher on the Wall, the sword in the darkness. His loyalty lies with them and this quote reminds us of that.
His ties with House Stark are severed, even though the fact that he’s the bastard of Winterfell is constantly brought up throughout the seasons. Let’s compare his poster to Robb’s:
Tumblr media
Robb’s promo poster is political. He ended season 1 being crowned King in the North. The War of the Five Kings is at its genesis. But the Young Wolf is different from the other kings, he doesn’t want the Iron Throne, he goes to war to avenge his father and achieve northern independence. His quote is “the North remembers”; it’s a promise to the enemies of House Stark and the North. It instantly solidifies the conflict between the North and the South. There’s also another poster with the same line, made to represent House Stark/the North:
Tumblr media
There’s also a Joffrey/House Lannister poster (I apologize in advance to all House Stark stans):
Tumblr media
With this one. I’m so sorry, I apologize again, the audience gets the true nature of Joffrey, and also the behaviour of House Lannister overall, once Joffrey ascends as King. I’ll talk about the one for House Targaryen when I get to D@ny.
But let’s jump forward to season 6 (I make this jump because for season 3 and 4 it’s the same poster for all characters, nothing really distinctive about them):
Tumblr media
Season 6 promos had the motif of the Hall of Faces, from the House of Black and White. At first sight, this promo poster doesn’t seem like much. I mean, it doesn’t have any quote on it that relates to the character so, what’s so special about it?
Well, in the GOT wiki, in the photo gallery for season 6, are all the teaser posters for the seasons, with a quote relating to the character’s journey up until this point. Jon’s quote is: "The long night is coming...and the dead come with it." Again, this quote keeps him tied to the Night’s Watch and their fight against the Night King. He’s still the knight on a noble crusade, only this time, he’s not part of the Night’s Watch, but he still has their fight against the Others as his top priority. He is the shield that guards the realms of men (a line he says to Beric in S7 during the wight hunt, mind you).
A side note: something I observed is the connection Jon’s quote has with the other Starks (sans Arya, since she’s training to become No One). It’s the first time a promotional teaser poster links him to the Starks. By making this connection, it’s clear that, when at first, his fealty was with the Night’s Watch, now it is with his House. What is the connection? The sense of loss and being at a low point. We all know it’s been that way for the Starks since season 1. The quotes from House Stark are the following:
"I've won every battle, but I'm losing this war." - Robb Stark
"If I'm going to die, let it happen while there's still some of me left." - Sansa Stark
"Anyone can be killed." - Arya Stark
"Show them how it feels to lose what they love." - Catelyn Stark
Season 7 was the same as seasons 3 and 4: same quote (a House Stark-related quote) for all the characters, with the tiny hint of the Night King. Nothing particularly special, but we could point out the use of a quote heavily related to House Stark “Winter is here” (a line said by Sansa to Jon in the season 6 finale, mind you) and the hint of the Night King in the eye of the characters, alluding to the fabled “Ice”, the Night King and his army of the dead. So I wouldn’t be so surprised if the promotional posters for season 8 contrast the ones from last season, alluding to the fabled “Fire”.
So, now let’s go with D@ny
D@enerys Targaryen-Season 1:
Tumblr media
The first promo we get for D@ny establishes her as someone in completely different world from Westeros, a woman out of place, and she’s holding one of her dragon eggs. To add to it we have the quote “I do not have a gentle heart” (one said by her to Jorah). So this promo poster sets her as a, in lack of a better way to explain myself, a strong woman (ugh). We bear witness to the hardships D@ny has to face in season 1, but she faces them all and at the end comes up on top, with the birth of her dragons.
Now, let’s see season 2 D@ny:
Tumblr media
The quote she is given for the season 2 poster is a way to introduce, little by little, the mentality of House Targaryen. So far, in season 1, we’ve learnt about the Targaryens like history, through the eyes and minds of other characters (Aegon the Conqueror, Mad King Aerys and Rhaegar during Robert’s Rebellion are the most notable), but we got to see glimmers of the Targaryens with Vyseris’ behavior and later D@enerys’. The birth of her dragons is a catalyst for her: she’s still Khaleesi, but we get to see more and more of the “dragon” in her.
youtube
It is in this season, we start to see D@enerys embrace her Targaryen roots.
Her promo poster is also very similar to Robb’s: its quote is also used to represent her House in the House Targaryen teaser poster
Tumblr media
It heavily features fire: the small pyre, the dragon egg cracking, and the Targaryen sigil, the three-headed dragon. It represents the birth of the dragons, that we see at the season 1 finale, but it also represents the return of House Targaryen with D@ny and her three baby dragons. Let’s not forget the full quote “I will take what is mine with fire and blood”. From now on, D@ny is in a quest of power to get what she thinks was taken from her: the Iron Throne.
As I explained earlier, season 3 and 4 didn’t have posters that stood out individually, character wise.
So with that said, let’s jump to season 6:
Tumblr media
As I explained with the Jon poster, at first glance, it would seem that the season 6 promo posters would be no different to those of previous seasons, that is until I looked up the pics in the GOT wiki and saw each one had a quote. D@ny’s quote was the following: "I will do what queens do. I will rule." By this point, she has her armies and is Queen of Meereen, she’s in a good place. But season 5 threw at her new hardships that tested her as a ruler and by the end of the season she ended fleeing the city atop Drogon. So, in season 6, we see D@ny readjust herself amongst the Dothraki in Vaes Dothrak, but later, when she murders all the Khals and the Dothraki see her as the “Unburnt”, she becomes their leader, gaining another army for her quest for the Throne. She deals with situation in Meereen quite swiftly (with the intervention of Tyrion, but it didn’t prevent her of going all Dracarys) and she gained new allies in Dorne and the Reach. So she ends the season with a long-awaited moment: sailing for Westeros.
Her quote is about power. Her goal, from the start, was to get back to Westeros and reclaim the Throne. She wants to rule, she seek that power. But, just as Jon’s quote connected him to the Starks’, does D@ny’s quote connect her to anybody else? If we concentrate on power, then yes, her quote connects to others:
"When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground." - Cersei Lannister
"Everyone is mine to torment." - Joffrey Baratheon
We have Cersei, who seeks to maintain power since the very beginning, and we also have Joffrey, who, as King, did what he pleased with his subjects (the little shit). But there’s another quote, but it doesn’t connect, rather it serves as contrast:
"I was never meant to rule." - Robert Baratheon
Here we have a Lord that went to war and won, thus making him the King and establishing a new dynasty. Everyone knew Robert was a great warrior, proven time and time again on the battlefield, but when the time came for him to lay down his warhammer and rule, he proved he wasn’t the man for the job. He was a warrior, not a ruler. And I think it’s the same with D@ny, she’s a great warrior, she has proven herself as a conqueror, but we’ve seen she’s not fit to rule. As Daario points out in season 6:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The difference between Robert and D@ny is that Robert was well aware of his inability to rule, whereas D@ny is uncapable to see her own faults as a ruler. Also, I find this parallel/contrast between Robert and D@ny super ironic.
D@ny is great in a battlefield, but she fails when she has to bring people together. She’s great when she has to set ships and armies ablaze (which is very cruel, because you know, death by fire sucks), but she fails when diplomacy is involved. Her tenure in Meereen is a big testament to that.
Sansa puts it better:
“Now, I’m sure cutting off heads is very satisfying, but that’s not the way you get people to work together”
In conclusion:
We get introduced to Jon as a guardian, as a protector. That image of him never goes, even after he leaves the Watch. His role in the story, overall, is the one of a defender, of a honorable knight that fights for a noble cause. From the start, he is the watcher in the Wall, the sword in the darkness, the shield that guards the realms of men. That’s his main goal: to protect people from the threat of the Night King. And throughout the seasons, we’ve seen him become not only a leader, but a strategist, someone that values information as much as he values an army.
On the other hand, we get introduced to D@ny as a woman out of place, but that quickly acquires power, and that’s her goal. Neither of these things really go away in her story, too: she is a woman out of place because she longs for home, and tries to find it anywhere she can. She acquires power very quickly and becomes a formidable force all on her own, but as her power rises, the more she embraces her Targaryen heritage. Her role in the story, overall, is one of a conqueror, just like her ancestor, a warrior. While there are some savior tropes (white savior tropes) in her storyline and she tries to do good for the ones that can’t defend themselves, her story is mainly driven by power. Her main goal never stops being the Iron Throne.
And also, they’re the last two Targaryen: one, a defender, the other, a conqueror. Their stories go in opposite directions. That’s the reason why in the last season, Jon and D@ny are going to clash. And it’s been spelled out for us from the start.

“Tis the season to be Jolly…” Or is it?
Tumblr media
Brief, solution focused therapy....Sally Nilsson, Hypnotherapist in Surrey
Imagine the scene…
The perfect Christmas dinner has just been demolished and all the family are sitting round the roaring fire. Granny’s supping a sherry, the kids are playing Buckaroo and the adults are enjoying a game of Charades, laughing their heads off.  Perfect. Will your Christmas be like this?
Here’s a few ideas on how you can enjoy or maybe even just get through Christmas this year but first I’ll share with you why ‘the season to be jolly’ can be far from this for many people. Please visit my website for how I can help further with more detailed information on mental health issues at horleytherapy.co.uk
Illness and bereavement this Christmas
Why does it seem that so many people fall ill or even pass away over the festive period? Last year my beloved father in law died and our family were in Sweden for his funeral the week before Christmas Day. Now my Dad is ill.  Are you going through bereavement or caring for poorly loved ones or are you suffering with an illness whether physical or emotional?
Caring for yourself and others can be very stressful and left untreated may lead to depression.  Often the situation is not in your control. Having control is an important emotional need for all of us.  Think about what you do have control of right now. Making sure you have sufficient medication in the holiday season is very important.  Visit poorly loved ones as often as you can and if you do have a concern, give yourself ample time to make a GP appointment.  GPs are stretched to unbelievable limits, especially in the Christmas week and New Year, same for A & E departments.  With the flu season upon as make sure those who are vulnerable have had their flu jab.
As a carer you may well be thinking constantly of others and not yourself.  It is not selfish to think about your needs so give yourself a break.  You are no good to anyone if you burn yourself out. If you can, try to normalise the end of an elderly loved one’s life.  We are born and we will die.  Us humans do have a lifespan.  The best we can do is to be kind, forgive (if there have been broken relationships) and spend time with those we love at the end of their lives.  If a loved one has passed away, however difficult the end may have been try to remember a time when you were together and happy.  Sit quietly and bring the memory into your mind for a few minutes.  Breathe slowly and really emerse yourself in the memory, where you both were, what they were wearing, even the smell of their perfume or aftershave.  This can be a great comfort.

at my website horleytherapy.co.uk goes into more detail about the symptoms both physical and emotional.  Stress and anxiety are closely related and the best advice I can give when your heart starts racing, you feel angry, jealous, worried, you breathe too quickly and you can’t think straight is this. Calm yourself down with your breath.
This has worked for my clients and myself so many times and it is amazing to believe that such an easy exercise can reverse a panic attack, prevent an argument and help you to think clearly, quickly and safely.
When you can feel the stress symptoms just beginning or you know there is a stressful situation coming up take yourself to somewhere quiet. If you are in the car, pull over where it is safe and get out and move away.  Better to be sitting but standing is fine too.  Close your eyes and breathe in slowly for the count of seven then out for the count of eleven.  If this is too much you can try five and eight or whatever feels comfortable.  The idea is that you need to breathe out for a longer count than you breathe in.  Feel the breath coming in and out in the stomach, not your chest.  Keep this up for 2 minutes.  Put all your focus on your breath and not your stressful thoughts. Any unwanted thoughts you can notice but then imagine moving them away and return to thinking about your breath.
This exercise works for many reasons but two are: it helps to rebalance the amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide in your body and  also it enables you to step back and observe the situation more calmly and with logic.
Anxiety this Christmas…
Whereas stress is something that is real and actually happening, anxiety is what you think will happen or what you thought happened in the past in a negative way.  One of the main reasons that anxiety can take hold is a misuse of your imagination.  Your imagination can be used so successfully to solve problems and find solutions. This is what we were born to do.  When your imagination backfires and becomes damaging is when you begin to think of all different scenarios that could happen. Thoughts go round and round in your head and it becomes impossible to think clearly.  Catastrophic thoughts or black and white thinking come into play. This will not help anyone. Examples of these are “My friend didn’t call me back, she hates me” or “My homework is rubbish, I never get it right”
To calm down begin the breathing exercise for stress as above. Step back from yourself and mentally observe the situation from a distance.  Do you have evidence that the bad thing will happen?  What is the very worst thing that can happen? Is this likely? Think back to a time when you thought something really bad was going to happen and either it didn’t or it wasn’t nearly as bad as you thought it would be.  Reframe the issue and see if you can think of an alternative scenario.  An example of this is when a checkout assistant in the supermarket seems sullen and unhelpful, making you feel angry. What if they have just found out they are going to be made redundant and this is their last shift?  Try this with other scenarios during your day and reframe them.  It will keep you calmer and p erhaps help you to be a bit more understanding.
Tumblr media
Depression this Christmas
Depression is normally brought on by a period of stress or anxiety when you have not been able to see a way out of a problem and the future looks bleak.  Separation, the loss of a job or loved one can all lead to depression. Please see the section on depression at the website horleytherapy.co.uk for a more detailed account and how I can help.  Christmas can be a particularly difficult time.  There may be something that happened to you at Christmas time so when the season is coming up you can pattern match to the bad memory.  What if you prepare yourself this time and stop repeating the same experience?
If the memory is about a place, a group of people. a particular date or an event you are expected to attend which all have reminders say to yourself beforehand that you will break the pattern and do something else. You don’t have to put yourself through the bad stuff.  Make a plan to do something completely different at the ‘trigger’ time and please, make it a pleasant experience.  If a loved one passed away at Christmas, think about them the week before, visit their burial place then. They will understand.  If a partner finished with you or you with them it may not be a good idea to get out all the photos, put on the records you loved together and drink a bottle of vodka.
You have choices!
Money worries cause anxiety which can lead to depression.  Peer pressure and the need to ‘keep up with the Jones’s’ can be avoided.  Be honest with your family early on. Explain that there just isn’t enough money in the pot this year for the Samsung Galaxy S8 or Pandora charm bracelet.  If your children are lucky enough to get pocket money then ask them to make a contribution to their presents. A secret Santa gift for little cash means you have remembered loved ones. Don’t feel guilty. It’s just stuff.
Christmas Day with people you don’t get on with. Don’t put yourself through it – again! Arrange to see them before or after Christmas instead.  Here’s some handy phrases to get out of it.
We’re not doing Christmas Day at ours this year.  Our local pub are doing a festive meal and we’ve just managed to bag the last 4 places! We really want to see you though so how does (insert date) sound?
We’ve been invited for Christmas Day by our friends (insert) and we’ve put them off for years so we’re going to theirs.  Will definitely meet up (insert date).
Do you know, we’ve never told you this but actually we don’t really like turkey, mince pies, Christmas cake etc so we’re going for sushi just for a change.
We’ve been a bit stupid and accidently invited the partner’s boss for Christmas Day! Can’t get out of it now.  Will definitely see you before or after.
Tumblr media
Overspending at Christmas
At this time of year you cannot avoid the huge, beautiful real Christmas trees that COST A FORTUNE. As for the baubles, tinsel, decorations, lights etc, etc. Give it a rest. Does your house and garden really need to look like a scene from ‘Deck the Halls’?
When I was a kid a wonderful memory was making paper chains. All you need is a pack of coloured paper cut into 2.5cm strips and some pritt stick.  If you can drag your offspring away from their consoles/phones for an hour you’ll be giving you and them some real family time.
You may be able to cut a small tree from a local farm or choose a garden centre that doesn’t have Titchmarsh blaring out from the speakers and go for the cheapest option. Alternatively, go to the town outdoor market or get a small artificial one from Wilco’s.
Go to Church  We live in a more secular society and you don’t have to be a born again Christian to go to a carol or Christingle service.  I am not religious but there’s nothing I like more than belting out ‘O Come All Ye Faithfull’ and watching the kiddies all wanting to be angels – such innocence.  Tell you who might like this – your elderly relatives!
Turkey Many of the traditions are so out of date. I am not a vegan or indeed vegetarian but do you really need to spend up to £100 on a goose or turkey?  There they were, minding there own business, scratching around and being sooo looked after then CHOP!  Surely you can have the food YOU like to eat at a price YOU want to pay.
Lonliness at Christmas Are you likely to be alone this Christmas?  If you want to be alone and are happy about that then you have every right to be. You can get up when you want, eat and drink what you want and listen to your music or watch your TV.
What if the idea of being on your own makes you sad?  Do you know someone who is going to be on their own this Christmas, a neighbour, someone recently bereaved, or someone who has no family or has separated? Can you lay one extra place at your table for that person?  If they feel it will be too much of an imposition, can you pop round with a goody bag and an hour of your time for a chat?
Tumblr media
Get out of the house If you are going to be on your own be good to yourself.  Set your alarm and get yourself ready for the day.  If you are able bodied make yourself breakfast and go for a walk.  Walking in nature is uplifting, even in the rain, or just getting some fresh air and walking around where you live will fill some of the day.
Helping others Often when we feel sad or anxious we spend long periods of time on thinking negative thoughts of what could have been or what might be in the future.  Focusing outwards can prevent this. Is there a local food bank or soup kitchen or somewhere you can help others less fortunate than yourself? An hour spent doing something for someone else will give meaning and purpose to your day. Perhaps there is an animal shelter that could do with some help?
Keep yourself busy Just because it is Christmas Day doesn’t mean you have to do Christmassy things.  What about that cupboard you have put off clearing or the shed that needs sorting out?  You can go to any charity shop and pick up a jigsaw puzzle. Any type of arts and crafts activity will give you something to concentrate on.
Listening to your favourite music relating to good times or watching comedy can help.  So can picking up that book which you have been meaning to read but haven’t had time. Rather than spending long periods of time at home alone are their some shifts you can swap at work?  Your colleague will be grateful for the time off giving you the opportunity of holiday time later in the year.
Pefection Very often at Christmas there is an expectation that everything has to be perfect. Do you know what? It doesn’t.  If you expect that this will be the best Christmas ever, Uncle John will behave, your kids will love their presents, your partner will get that special gift for you, the meal will arrive on time and be delicious, you could be setting yourself up for disappointment.  There’s nothing wrong with a little bit of pessimism.  What will be will be.
Alcohol  Have you been in a situation where alcohol has spoiled your Christmas?  Bringing together groups of people who don’t normally get on or simmering arguments with partners become inflamed when alcohol is in the mix.  So often the day starts early with Champagne or Prosecco, and continues with glasses continually being filled. It’s like no-one has ever had a drink before so they need to consume as much as humanly possible over a ten hour period. Danger!
Enjoying a drink is great when you can handle it.  How about going out a few days before for a celebration knowing that just for Christmas Day you will cut right down or not even drink any alcohol. It is only one day and chances are you will wake up on Boxing Day with a clear conscience (and head), guilt free and feeling very pleased with yourself for a successful and happy Christmas.
There may be one family member or friend who you know will over do it.  I appreciate this is not the easiest conversation to have yet you have the right to a happy day so speak to them beforehand and make it clear that although they are very welcome at your house you will not accept any bad behavior or repeat of a previous alcohol induced bad event.  If they do play up they will be asked to leave.  After all the day is for everyone to enjoy, especially where children are involved.
Remember what is important this Christmas
1.   Tell the people close to you that you love them and mean it
2.   Make time for others who need you
3.   If you can’t say something nice then zip the lip
4.   Make a conscious effort to include the children
5.   Be realistic about expectations. You don’t need perfection
6.   Think about what you are spending. Keep to a budget
7.   Plan ahead for the meal. So much can be prepared beforehand
8.   Watch the booze
9.   Think about who you really want to spend Christmas with
10.  Have fun!
I hope you have a fantastic Christmas.  I will be here if you need me and invite you to send me an e.mail at [email protected]
With any worries now or in the New Year.

The Ideal First Smart Phone For Kids Does Not Have A Screen At All
When is time to get a cell phone for your young adults, mother and fathers have a very difficult time identifying which smartphone is the best choice. Utilizing a smart phone is a large deal for your kids and you must establish simple rules for your little ones from the very first day.
Tumblr media
There is no correct or incorrect time to give your child their first cellphone, however a large number of specialists think that the longer you procrastinate to deliver them their first cellphone, the better. Although, what if you are a parent who would love to be able to reach their daughter or son with out providing them with their personal mobile phone too early? We’ve identified a solution. Relay is a touch screen-free, water-resistant, cellphone that allows your kid to contact your cellphone with the touch of a button. Parents can talk to their girl or boy’s Relay device using a Relay application employing their personal mobile phone. For couples with children who would like a cell phone with narrowed telephone numbers to call to their children, Relay permits children to get in touch with parents when they are at their house from school or out with close friends, without the increased fear of the things they may be watching at on their displays or all the several other threats associated with giving a kid smart phone use prematurily.. Mother and fathers may additionally use the Relay app on their cell phone to individualize their daughter or son’s device to play music files, offer language talk and translation with their friends and family who have Relay mobile phones. The Relay smart phone itself is normally $50 and there exists a $10 charge every month to run it on the network system. Relay is offered by many discount stores. It comes in five fun color styles, so you’re pretty sure to find the best last-second surprise for your own child, or a niece or nephew. The preferred cell phone for teenagers can be found in all sizes and shapes, from one-button press-to-call safety devices, to advanced Android cell phone with drop shield, to the most inexpensive iPhone if you want to have your kids employ the same plans. It's still a difficult find when looking for the kid in your life. We are here to help you look for a mobile phone for your little ones, preteen, or teen - any age, actually. We're specialists on choosing smart phones for teenagers, as much as we can appropriately look for the best smart phones in the United States. We’ve evaluated valuable aspects, such as parental controls, endurance, ability limitations, device tracking, and price. The preferred mobile phones for young adults will be extremely basic devices primarily meant to start a line of interaction with mom and dad. For teens, we went forward and planned for low-cost basic phones that enable phoning and texting while not having too many product features for your family to get caught up in. For high-school individuals, we included low-priced smart phones that have a strong balance of value and function while maintaining dependable parental settings using Android and iOS. Since more recent iPhones and Android smart phones running the latest operating systems (like iOS 11.4 and iOS 12 beta) provide substantial parental configurations build in, adults should feel secure shopping for these cellphones for teenagers and children at their disposition. Moto E5 The latest Moto E5 is not simply a single smart phone but instead a series of very affordable smart phones with different product highlights. Although their difference, they all make great spending budget selections for your youngster. While cheap Android cellphones can be performing on dated software program or equipment, the Moto E5 is sold with brand-new Android and processors 8.0 software package. The Moto E5 Play is usually toned down a little bit, rendering it more budget-friendly at less than a hundred dollars. In England, a standard Moto E5 and the Moto E5 Plus will be accessible soon. Besides the basic Moto E5, many of the others will include a water-resistant layer that should help make sure your young adults would not harm their phone. Samsung Galaxy S8 If you need to really get your adolescent an incredibly capable smart phone but get worried they might harm it and waste a lot of money, the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active is your best choice. It has every one of the general performance a front runner Android smart phone calls for, yet it’s crafted strong. The Galaxy S8 Active screen is sharp, the camera is great, and the battery is forgiving if your child forgets to charge it one night. All that is packed into a chassis with an great rating. In other words, it can handle a whole lot of carelessness. We dropped one screen-first onto a rock floor from five feet up, and the display screen was fine. The Samsung Galaxy S8 Active is available in the US on Sprint, AT&T and T-Mobile. Clients on other systems and in the UK can look in its place at the Galaxy S8 and the most popular Samsung Galaxy S8 cases. Iphone SE Right from the Apple group of cell phones, their iPhone SE is not the preferred phone, but it’s still helped by Apple with the new iOS 11 enhancements. In spite of its age, it continually performs very well with Apple’s A9 processor, and it will offer your child all of the cell phone performance they can need. The perk of their generation is that this is sold at a very good deal for an Apple piece of equipment. One of the primary drawbacks about delivering your teenager an iPhone cellphone is that it’s not built to be exceptionally resilient. Luckily for us, this is an issue that can be corrected with a low cost iPhone SE case instantly. Apple's iPhone 7 or iPhone 8 If cost is not a huge predicament and you plan to purchase a phone case (or your teenager has established themselves to not be careless), the iPhone 7 make for exceptional options. Your son or daughter should never come to feel held back by any deficiency of capabilities (or design) on these modern gadgets, even though you can feel safe that the parent controls on iOS will be all you need to keep track of your teen’s usage. Although the upfront price tag will be higher, software help and support for these types of more recent iPhones will go on for more time, so you would not need to be stressed about upgrading anytime soon. As an extra benefit, the iPhone phone cameras are impressive, so you will get to see a lot of beautiful photos of the things your teenager is doing. Discover one explanation to give your daughter or son a smart phone: if they're often out of reach of trustworthy grown-ups and may need to get in touch with you or some other care-giver. Don't purchase your children an expensive, sophisticated cell phone. The Wait Until Eighth program, which champions only getting teenagers cell phones once they reach the 8th grade, makes the right arguments, although it too easily elides cell phones and social media, which are not the same elements. The plan's central point, though, is that younger kids generally just require cell phones for calling and limited text messages. The preferred cellphone for tweens and kids is a plain voice mobile phone, a screenless Republic Wireless Relay, or a pure tracking device like the TrackR Bravo. When you try to step up to a smart phone, do not spend too much cash. Young children are not liable. That's part of what would make them kids. They may lose cell phones, drop cellphones, soak phones, and destroy phones. Assume it can happen. There are always a bunch of sound phones in the budget selection that are somewhat brand-new, secure versions of their os's, aren't aggravating to work with, and don't look and feel totally uncool. You will discover even plenty of decent ones below two hundred. We will not enter the never-ending dispute, by no means settled, about cellular phone radiation and children and teenagers, however a good amount of mother and fathers have mentioned concern to us about any of it. The good news is that radiation problems only really come into play when a telephone is placed exactly up to your head for very long periods of time, and young children do not communicate on the smart phone with their friends much these days: they text. Rapid interactions with dad on a rudimentary cellphone, for security or other uses, won't injure any person. To experience long conversations, purchase a cheap wired headset. Whatever smart phone you purchase, be sure to grab a decent, tough case for it. My girl uses a Galaxy Note 4 in an Otterbox Commuter cellphone case. I could not expect how inspiring my kid turned into using the S Smart pen, frequently doodling and making ideas. go As a result of the pen, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 isn't just a mobile phone, it clearly is an unlimited diary. Try to make a deal with your young fella: In the event they obtain a cellphone, you're allowed to glance at it. I check my child's telephone regularly. She's alright with this; that is the deal. I don't examine her messages, but she is aware I have that option. An extra prerequisite when giving your teen a smartphone is to get the right service plan. The most cost effective approach is Wi-Fi-only, without SIM card. If that's the case, your daughter or son only experience coverage in well-known Wifi networks, and won't be able to send out conventional texts or place standard cellphone calls. Your son or daughter may, nevertheless, use Facetime and iMessage on Apple iPhones, or Skype for text messaging and phoning to other Google accounts on Google Android smart phones. Your company might give you a phone on a payment on monthly basis deal. Whenever you are sharing a data plan with a kid, make sure that you place a limit on their smartphone to a particular volume of periodic data to make sure they may not consume all of yours.

Samsung Galaxy S8 v iPhone 7 Plus speed test
The Galaxy S8 is the latest flagship smartphone from Samsung, and as such, it's brimming with the most powerful components on the market right now.
Powering the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ is the industry’s first 10nm chip, which unlocks better speeds and efficiency.
Samsung has coupled that processor with 4GB of RAM, so clearly, it's no slouch.
Meanwhile, the iPhone 7 Plus is powered by Apple's latest in-house system-on-a-chip, A10 Fusion.
When it launched, the A10 Fusion was the fastest single-threaded mobile system-on-a-chip ever released.
iPhone 7 has 2GB of RAM, and iPhone 7 Plus has 3GB of RAM.
YouTube account EverythingApplePro has devised a speed test to pit the smartphone rivals against one another.
Both smartphones have to open a succession of mobile apps open after another.
The prominent YouTube video-maker also performs a number of quick tasks within certain apps like, for example, exporting an identical video project in VideoShop.
It the latter that really seals the Samsung Galaxy S8's fate.
The flagship iOS and Android smartphones are pretty much neck and neck until the dreaded export task.
iPhone 7 Plus powers through the first round of apps in 3 minutes 38 seconds.
It takes the Galaxy S8 a staggering 7 minutes 35 seconds to complete the same task.
That's almost twice the amount of time.

Apple iPhone 8 will debut a brand-new all-glass look, with a curved OLED display and no physical Home Button
Fortunately, Samsung Galaxy S8 owners will be unlikely to notice this drop in speed during day-to-day usage.
The Galaxy S8 either matches – or outperforms – the iPhone 7 when loading single apps, like popular social network Snapchat, the Camera, or lightweight mobile game, including Super Mario Run.
In fact, it's only when faced with crunching a monstrous video file, like the project in VideoShop, that any discernible disparity between performance appears.
The video test caused some controversy on YouTube.

How You Can Stop Milia In Youngster's Skins.
Though it has actually been a month from several social interactions (unique opportunities devoted with family and friends) accounts Http://piekna-szczupla-Zdrowa.info in my January documents are actually mostly from the picturesque range. The Solar system individual could need a great deal from your house individual in order to be in a partnership with each other as well as may even be actually a trouble. And also if you look at our 2017 results throughout each one of indiscernible our company have actually observed powerful development in our much smaller packs and in our far from home business. Relying on an individual's total exposure time to the sun and baseline skin shade, this sort of radiation loss subjected skin tissues. There is actually merely a great deal dark patina someone may use in a lifetime. During this moment, the continuing to be lighting of the day will designate multicolored shades on the landscape making it possible for the visitor to delineate the other components from the views. I would say that our team remain to be very concentrated on managing costs, and you would certainly possess observed that the composed costs grew 2.5% in the fourth, which is below our team have actually been developing at. And also growth features assets in our customer method as well as electronic as well as information analytics. This was revealed that the old pagan globe typically believed in a triumverate from three magnificent women called in some cases the Fates, occasionally the Poise, with the authentic singular the planet goddess honoured in 3 parts of maiden, mama, and also crone (Harrison, 1903). Reos went on that the little ones of the group's forty-three participants were kept apart coming from their parents, and also got special " training" that was given in " extremely serious shades." She included that " there was a lot of paddling entailed, and also a bunch of being actually enclosed in dark areas." The instructor's punishments " left bruises", and the Order parents on their own were in some cases purchased to beat their own children. Our experts stayed up and watched the sun collection (overdue) and also had whole lots even more pictures. The next day, an oil driller unloaded my vehicle for me (wonderful individual) as well as I stayed expecting to hatch a gold egg so I could possibly come to Anchorage to take the truck back. In Sunshine Lifestyle Resource Control, our company ended the fourth with $655 billion in assets under administration. To apply power as well as ruthlessness over someone weaker in comparison to you, or even various, is a huge zing for a particular kind of individual, and also such individuals are certainly not especially rare. Sun exposure is useful as well as necessary for vitamin D synthesis, but too much visibility could be harmful to the skin and also general wellness. Called after the Roman deity Diana that was the Deity of the Sorcerers in Charles Leland's publication of 1889 called Aradia (Barrett, 2004). If SunPower allotments are up to around $5 each allotment, after that I will examine a SURGE technique to magnify intermediary phrase increases. Direct exposure to sun light is actually an additional root cause of allergic-type skin reactions. For one, I prefer it were a little better: This is actually perfectly legible in broad sunshine, however phones like the Galaxy S8 and also iPhone 7 are brighter as well as extra clearly readable under the sun. And afterwards I guess - and Administrator's statements stated that this is actually the first quarter where you brought together the Sun Lifestyle and also the Assurant service in one typical platform, and I guess this is for Dan or for Administrator. The trend around the globe article Paris Weather Contract is distinct; photo voltaic are going to continuously take market allotment coming from coal as energy needs rise as well as coal-fired nuclear power plant retirement lives develop.

“Tis the season to be Jolly…” Or is it?
Tumblr media
Imagine the scene...

Stress this Christmas...
The list is endless of what can make you feel stressed at Christmas and the section on
stress
at my website horleytherapy.co.uk goes into more detail about the symptoms both physical and emotional.
Anxiety this Christmas...

Samsung's Galaxy S8 is the most beautiful phone in the world
It’s the first question on your mind, so I’ll answer it right away.
The Galaxy S8 does not explode.
I’ve been testing Samsung’s latest phone for a week, and it never overheated. There was no popping, sizzling, smoking, and definitely no fire. As far as I can tell, the Galaxy S8 doesn’t have the same battery flaw that its predecessor did.
Of course, it’s always possible there will be problems once millions of people get the Galaxy S8 in the coming weeks. But you have to trust that a company as maniacally focused on winning as Samsung won’t make the same mistake twice in six months.
On top of that, the Galaxy S8 is an incredible phone, and it puts Samsung on a path to redemption after that embarrassing blunder with the Note 7 last fall. It’s bigger and better looking than the iPhone. The curved screen sets a new standard for smartphone displays. And it’s packed with essential features like wireless charging and a best-in-class camera.
Still, it’s not perfect. While the hardware and design are the best you can get, there are a lot of questionable things going on with the software, especially Samsung’s decision to make its own digital assistant called Bixby. Oh, and Bixby’s voice features won’t be ready when the phone launches.
The Galaxy S8 and its bigger brother the Galaxy S8+ go on sale April 21, starting at about $729.
The best-looking phone, ever
The Galaxy S8 isn’t just a gorgeous Samsung phone. It’s the best-looking phone ever built.
Most of that is due to the curved display, which covers over 80% of the phone’s face. The curve is supposed to give the impression that there aren’t any borders around the screen, which Samsung calls the Infinity Display. (That’s a misnomer though. You can totally see bezels on this thing.)
It’s an impressive feat of engineering. At 5.8 inches, the Galaxy S8’s screen is larger than the iPhone 7 Plus screen, but packed on a slimmer and more attractive body. The iPhone looks chunky and outdated by comparison. We’re getting closer and closer to the dream of having a phone that’s all display on the front.
Want to go bigger? The Galaxy S8+ bumps the screen size to 6.2 inches, but I found that model a little too big for my tastes.
There’s another reason the S8 looks and feels so good. It’s made from two identical pieces of glass on the front and back, which makes it comfortable and natural to hold or slip in your pocket. Couple that with the large display, and it feels like your content is almost floating in your hand. Brilliant.
To make room for all that screen, Samsung removed the home button and replaced it with digital keys at the bottom of the display. There’s a nice haptic feedback when you press there, and it wasn’t much of an adjustment for me.
There’s more to like. Wireless charging. Fast charging. A camera that still can’t be beat. Expandable memory. And better-than-average battery life. It’s all the stuff you care about on one amazing-looking phone.
But there is one major flaw to the design. Since the home button is gone, the fingerprint sensor has been moved to the back, right next to the camera. It couldn’t be in a more awkward place. I constantly found myself fumbling for the sensor, which resulted in smudges on the camera lens. It would’ve been much better if Samsung put the fingerprint sensor in the middle of the phone.
Software flubs
My big problem with the Galaxy S8 is the same problem I’ve had with the last few Samsung phones. Although Samsung continues to perfect hardware and design, it still misfires when it comes to software. Samsung’s modifications to Android are too noisy compared to the “clean” version that ships on Google’s Pixel phones.
And things get even more complicated with the introduction of Bixby, a new Siri/Alexa/Google Assistant rival developed in house by Samsung. Samsung’s ultimate vision for Bixby is to control everything on your phone with your voice. Want to adjust the brightness? Ask Bixby. Want to send an email? Connect to a Bluetooth speaker? Beam video to your smart TV? Bixby, in theory, should be able to handle all of it.
But after a disappointing demo of an early version of Bixby, Samsung delayed the voice control features until a software update comes later this spring. Bixby was clearly too limited and flawed to make a public debut. That’s nothing short of an embarrassment, considering Samsung hyped Bixby before it even announced the Galaxy S8 and added a dedicated button for launching the assistant on the side of the phone. Now that button does nothing.
Bixby isn’t just about voice, though. There’s also a feature in the camera called Bixby Vision that can analyze objects and bring up relevant information like shopping links and things to do nearby. But I had mixed results with Bixby Vision. It was good at recognizing books and pulling up Amazon links, but it didn’t always recognize other objects. For example, I took a photo of a Pepsi can and Bixby pulled up images of beer cans instead. I’m not sure it’s a necessary feature anyway. I’d rather just Google things than point a camera at something in the real world to do a web search.
Finally, there’s Bixby Home, which lives to the left of your main home screen and contains cards of information like weather, upcoming calendar events, and news clips. It’s almost an exact clone of Google Home, which is also part of Android and works a lot better.
Overall, Bixby is a mystery to me. There’s no reason to add a proprietary, inferior digital assistant when Google already has it nailed. And I worry that some users will get confused by two assistants battling it out for your time on the same device. Although Bixby doesn't ruin the S8, you’re better off ignoring it and using Google’s services instead.
Security snafu
One of the newest ways Samsung is pitching to unlock your phone is also one of the least secure: facial recognition. Although it works every time and it’s faster than the fingerprint, it’s not as secure as it should be. In fact, someone was already able to fool it with a photo, and the S8 even warns you that it’s not foolproof when you activate it. However, Samsung tells me it has since improved the facial recognition feature with new software. That seems true. I wasn’t able to fool it with a 8x10 photo of myself no matter how hard I tried.
And Samsung says facial recognition was never meant to be totally secure. It’s just another way to “open” your device, like the standard swipe-to-unlock feature. But that’s not the way Samsung has been pitching it. In fact, it’s the first option to “protect your phone” when you set the device up for the first time. This is nothing short of a security blunder. You shouldn’t use the facial recognition feature and Samsung should remove it altogether.
Conclusion
The Galaxy S8 is the kind of phone I’ve been dreaming of: a massive screen on a compact, well-designed body. It’s about as close to perfect as you can get. But because the software isn’t as refined as the hardware, I found myself pining for a phone like this either running the clean version of Android or even iOS. (My dream may come true with the next iPhone, according to the latest rumors.)
I have a feeling the software quirks I mentioned won't bother most people. And those quirks can easily be hidden or ignored. The Galaxy S8 is a great phone and it sets a new standard for all premium smartphones.

Great Design: Product Study
Tumblr media
Arguably the most beautiful phone to be released since the smartphone generation began, the Xiaomi Mi Mix is not just all looks. The innovations crammed in to this sleek ceramic body have literally pushed technology to the edge. It is actually considered a concept phone, yet it’s fully functioning model is already flying off the shelves in Asia and awe-inspiring first impressions from technology reviewers around the world. Even when importing from the 3rd party Chinese market and including import tax, the Mi Mix still comes in at around the price of the newest iPhone but with improved specs in almost every area, which is great design in itself.
Tumblr media
Aside from better specifications, a natural innovation for the annual regurgitation of smartphone designs, the Mi Mix provides great value for design. The first manufacturer to attempt a bezel-less display would have a number of problems to face. Apple are rumored to consider this for the upcoming iPhone 8 and Samsung’s newest model shown below, the S8 has a screen falling over the side edges to give the illusion of being all display, but the top and bottom still houses important components such as cameras and physical buttons. This phone is now over 6 months old and creating waves that other global designers will surely take note of.
Tumblr media
What Xiaomi have done first and better that anyone else so far is boldly push the display right up to the top and sides of the phone leaving almost no bezel. In fact, 91.3% of the front face of the phone is touchscreen, the highest produced so far (iPhone 7 Plus is 67.7%). This gives a huge 6.4 inch display with smooth curved corners, another interesting first for smartphones, with a similar front area footprint than the smaller screen (5.5inch) iPhone 7 Plus. To achieve this and keep some essential features such as a front facing camera, speakers and microphones, the engineers had to relocate these to the bottom end which usually houses some physical buttons or fingerprint scanners. All buttons have been removed to save internal space and the camera has been relocated to provide the same function, in a different location to all other similar phones at the slim bottom chin. This also houses the microphone and ultrasonic sensor for dimming the display during calls, replacing proximity sensors that cant be located beneath the surface, saving space on the bottom chin. The fingerprint scanner on the back further frees up space and having tried out phones with the same layout, i think it is an important change in ergonomics to not have the main scanner and button on the front, like in the iPhone range, as it is awkward and time consuming to operate in certain use cases and is essential to considering the display on
You may have noticed there is a screen where the speaker used to be...what use is a phone without a speaker to hear a phone call? The Mi Mix steps up to completely change the way you hear the caller, again, before any other smart phone. Without the space for a physical speaker, the designers and engineers understood the essence of sound waves being just vibrations. The ceramic back plate is vibrated by a contained piezoelectric motor, causing sound waves to travel along the cantilever back plate and clearly project the audio from the call in to the users ear. Truly a great design innovation that previously restricted design aesthetic.
Tumblr media
It’s flat side edges are easier to grip than an iPhone’s curves and is slightly thicker than Apple’s latest product making it more substantial to hold on to such an expensive and essential technological tool. I hope other designers value the ease of use through ergonomics above creating the thinnest phone as it should be primarily made to be held.
The innovations don’t stop with the physical components, using a Mi Mix to capture photo and video is transformed when the almost the whole 6.4 inch display is your viewfinder. From what i have seen it can have some pretty awesome effects and gives a wider view of the scene, while others have created interesting illusions with the unique design.
Tumblr media
Part of the reason i believe this phone exhibits great design features is the way it comes across in use and the feeling it gave it’s reviewers, as well as myself, when i first saw it used hands on. It feels like a phone from the future. It’s bold all-in design approach has several visible innovations as well as internal, which are neatly hidden away from any concern. The experience it creates really feels like the designers have tried to deliver the next generation of smartphone at a value price to consumers.
It begs the question, how long can brand loyalty and affinity last when more desirable options become available from overseas at better value? I for one would love the chance to buy one as i have several qualms with Apple’s recent iPhone designs and i believe many would follow suit if the Xiaomi had a similar retail and marketing presence as Apple or Samsung, the market leaders.
