For this ask game. WoSH as in Wishing on Space Hardware, my twenty-part Iron-Blooded Orphans sequel fic.
4. What detail in Wishing on Space Hardware are you really proud of?
Aaaah! There are so many I can't talk about because they're spoilers for the current story!
I've very much enjoyed fleshing Chryse out. You know, naming districts, putting in a public transport system, alluding to the criminal underworld, giving Yamagi a set of dodgy Russian lads and an Irish granny as neighbours . . . that kind of thing. The city is pretty nebulous in the show proper, so it was fun trying to give it some depth and join together the disparate backdrops we see.
(Arbrau encompasses what was once Russia so that's why there are people named Alexi living in one of their former colonies. Mrs Finucane did not deign to explain her presence, just sailed into the fic from stage left and installed herself upstairs.)
5. What do you wish someone would ask you about Wishing on Space Hardware? Answer it now!
I had been hoping someone would ask me about the title I gave the whole series. It is, as previously stated in the notes and more explicitly via the gimmick I added to Ragnarök in G Minor, taken from the song 'A New England', written by Billy Bragg and famously covered by Kirsty MacColl (a version I greatly prefer).
I saw two shooting stars last night I wished on them, but they were only satellites It's wrong to wish on space hardware I wish, I wish, I wish you'd care
There's a few of reasons this stuck out to me at the time I was putting together the plan for a longer series after finishing To Catch a Falling Star. First and most obvious, 'space hardware' is the Gundam franchise's bread and butter, and I'd argue the degree to which the mecha provide the solution to each series' problems is a key indicator of what that series is doing. In Iron-Blooded Orphans, the mecha are ultimately a millstone for our protagonists, trapping them in the meat-grinder of their life as soldiers. So the third line of this verse fits very well, especially since my fics explore issues around searching for answers in the wrong places and trying to break free of harmful modes of thought or action.
Then there's the 'two shooting stars'. In IBO, a shooting star is Shino's motif, with all that that implies about how he ultimately burns out. The recurring idea throughout writing the survivor version of him that he is 'just the pieces left over' ties back into this. However, in the wider context of writing an IBO sequel, the two shooting stars are Orga and McGillis, who both relied on 'space hardware' to carry the day, dazzling people into believing in them despite that being a mistake. I think I've mentioned before that I made a point of never writing anything from either of their points of view: they are the ghosts haunting the narrative, who have ceased to matter as actual people; all that remains is the impressions they left behind and what those drive others to do.
Finally and most importantly, there's the last line of the verse, where the singer does what they have just declared wrong: I wish, I wish, I wish you'd care. Because wishing, desiring, wanting is so very human. It's just what we do, regardless of whether it's a good idea or not. We can't help it. In the fic, Yamagi is perhaps the one who most visibly struggles with this in these particular terms, since it forms the crux of his romantic troubles, both with Shino and in his absence. But it's the issue underlying everyone's actions. Ride's 'I have to try' attitude to revolution. Kudelia's war of attrition against the pillars of an unjust world. Almiria's loneliness. Iverson's Gundam-stanning. Gaelio's fears over being betrayed again. All these people who've learnt the hard way that wishes can be invested in the wrong places, doing it over and over again because they can't help it. They're human. They want. That's our nature.
So yes, that's why my Gundam fanfic series is named for a 1985 song about being let down by some bloke who clearly wasn't worth it.
6. What’s one fact about the universe of Wishing on Space Hardware that you didn’t get a chance to mention in the fic itself?
Very few details have not made their way into the fic by this point! What have I got left . . . ?
Ah! Right, yeah, so, the way I think about the Martian Union's government -- and please bear in mind this is not a fully-formed idea, which is why it's only alluded to in-text -- is that it's not a party system. Representatives are selected and voted for on an individual basis and government ministers are drawn from the resulting Assembly as required. When Kudelia talks about consensus and deadlock, this is why. And the Chairperson is appointed by the Assembly rather than themselves being an elected representative. They're there to act as a trusted mediator and a mouthpiece for the body at a global level.
This structure might well change as time goes on. It emerged after the Earth blocs ceded control and it's both very new and relying on pre-existing bureaucracy to enact its legislation. In theory, it avoids some big issues with party politics and gives people more direct control over who represents them. But the extent to which that works in practise is variable. There are still powerful interests at play, tilting the scales one way or another. It's nonetheless an attempt to do better than the Earth, since the impression I formed from events in Arbrau is that political leadership is very much not in the hands of regular people there (the parliament appeared to be electing the Prime Minister on its own, without it even being a leadership contest within one party??).
21. If you wrote a “missing scene” in Wishing on Space Hardware, what would it be?
Honestly, the way this series came together, I've already done tons! History of a Catastrophe is basically *all* missing scenes (a creative decision I'm still not 100% sure I pulled off; that fic is meant to feel like an inexorable piling-up of events but that's possibly not the best reader experience!).
I did toy with the idea of writing a bunch of smut based off all the times I faded to black over Shino and Yamagi getting it on. To the point of typing out the following, which picks up where the final chapter (pre-epilogues) of To Catch a Falling Star leaves off:
“Working up a sweat with you sounds great,” Shino says, rising to catch Yamagi's mouth. He manages to be less clumsy this time. Their tongues flick and slide over one another, Yamagi pressing down in return. In a second, the contact goes from careful to urgent. In another, Shino feels himself harden against the weight on top of him, a greedy need rushing through him. Yamagi lets him breathe, grinning. “So you can kiss properly.” “Yeah – 'course I can! You wanna maybe let me try for longer next time?” “I'll think about it.” A hand worms its way under his shirt. “Hmm.” “Hmm?” “The Union Military probably doesn't stock cabins with stuff to help its soldiers fuck, does it?” That . . . isn't something Shino had considered. “Nah, probably not.” If his experience with Gjallarhorn is anything to go by, big militaries are real stingy about that sort of thing. And Eugene certainly wouldn't have guessed he'd need to make up for their shortcomings. Yamagi's lips purse. Then he shrugs. “Oh well. Guess I'm finding out how you taste.” Shino's brain must still be frazzled from – everything – because it refuses to understand what that means until his trousers are most of the way off and Yamagi's mouth is moving over the front of his boxers, breathing hot air in places that were already getting nicely warmed up on their own. Duh. Obviously.
Which was fun but honestly, it felt like I would just be repeating the same joke about Yamagi being more experienced than Shino. While I'm not a proponent of smut needing plot justifications, I didn't think this would really add much to what's already there in terms of characterisation.
So a more serious answer is that I would have liked to dwell more on the period between the end of the anime and bringing Shino back. I think there'd be worth in looking at Eugene coming to terms with being left in charge and how that leads him to joining up with Kudelia, or in going deeper into one of Yamagi's relationships, to see him struggling with the things he can't properly let go of. Because I worry with those two in particular that effectively starting with 'fixing' their situation robs some of the impact of what they went through, and I think it'd be worth revisiting to underscore how much they gain from Shino's return.
24. Are there any easter eggs in Wishing on Space Hardware, and if so, what are they?
Oh, there are a bunch. I raided the Gundam back catalogue for incidental names, so there are call-outs to the other series all the way through. The SAU rep who has one line in The Ares Affair was originally explicitly named 'Winner' because I do not like Quatre from Gundam Wing very much, and the 'guy with the long braid' Shino is mentioned as having danced with in Revolution for Beginners... is obviously Duo, who I do like. There's a very explicit My Next Life as a Villainess reference in Love, Death and Cannoli, which doubles as a voice actor joke if you know the dub for that show. There was going to be a sneaky little OG Gundam reference in History of a Catastrophe, alluding to some ideas I have about the origin of the Calamity War, but I ended up cutting that entire section. Oh, and for the final fic and with reference to my previous post from this ask game, I decided that the 'small ocean' created by terraforming Mars is situated on the Utopia Planitia, which is not not a dig at Star Trek.
23. What’s a trope, AU, or concept you’ve never written, but would like to?
I nearly wrote 'crossovers' before remembering @thedancingwalrus-blog and I are responsible for Geniuses and Madmen, a Batman/Iron Man mash-up from a few years ago. I do really admire people who can get crossovers to work on the regular though; it's a very hit-and-miss prospect for me.
But a concept I'd like to write and haven't . . . I can do you one I *started* writing only for my interest to fizzle. There's a 1985 Transformers comic, part of Marvel UK's attempts to pad a monthly comic for weekly publication, called Man of Iron. And it's weird, in context of the 80s cartoon bombast that characterises most Transformers fiction. It's almost a ghost story, featuring a spaceship buried under an English castle, the Transformers flitting around the edges and being more threateningly alien than they're usually presented. There's a greater emphasis on them being these weird things that are concealing themselves (imperfectly) as human vehicles, and the eventual open conflict is pretty apocalyptical in its depiction.
And I thought, what about following that approach in an ongoing sense? Treating Transformers as a horror story of these beings who'd snuck into our mechanised, industrialised world and were having a war over control of it? It could almost be like The Magnus Archives, with various 'encounters' slowly building into an interlinked narrative. Indeed, the framing device for the couple of chapters I wrote was the Intelligence and Information Institute, a secret US government department from the old Marvel comics that would have eventually turned out to be working with the Decepticons because of course.
I dunno. I enjoy the concept and I'd like to see where it goes, but I've mostly fallen out of the Transformers fandom on account of the franchise's complete refusal to innovate or reinvent itself any more.
I might end up posting what I wrote of it at some point though.
30. Have you ever written something that was out of your comfort zone? If so, what was it, and how did it affect your approach to writing fic thereafter?
Honestly? Between Family. I'd written an explicit sex scene maybe once before this. Not out of any disdain for that kind of thing, it had simply never been something I felt inclined to do. I guess I just found Shino too sexy to resist, huh?
Actually that's not so far from the truth. You see, in writing him, I didn't want to lose sight of his being a canonically sexually-active character, with what seemed to me to be a fairly typical teenage attitude towards exercising his libido. Since I decided this wouldn't change much over the time period I was covering and saw no reason to assume Yamagi wouldn't grow up to be likewise active (plus a belligerent dislike of turning him into a blushing violet), sex between them was inevitable. Sure, I didn't have to be explicit to make the point that the sex precedes the romance/dependency and doesn't solve any of their issues. But I still had to think about it. And thinking about it was hot. As was the idea of chucking Eugene into the middle. Eventually, I just couldn't resist writing it out in full.
Which was fun. More importantly, it offered new vectors for exploring the characters I hadn't used before. That kind of unlocked whatever had been holding me back from writing sex scenes previously (probably just the idea that they are hard and would look silly), allowing me to add them to my toolkit.
I am unlikely to suddenly become a full-time smut writer. But it's nice to know that I can write it, when I want to.
37. Promote one of your own “deep cut” fics (an underrated one, or one that never got as much traction as you think it deserves!). What do you like about it?
I am a little disappointed The Haunting of Takaki Uno hasn't seen more readers, as it's one of the parts of WoSH I'm most proud of on a technical level. I think I managed to pull off a very solid structural conceit, as well as exploring something quite thorny with regards to the classism of the setting.
I do kind of get why it didn't get much traction -- it's gen, it's about a character who even I struggle to have something to say about -- and I'm certainly not unhappy with the response it *has* gotten in comments and kudos. But still. It feels like it got skipped a lot and I'm a bit sad about that.
41. Link a fic that made you think, “Wow, I want to write like that.”
If I ever manage to write something as brutal as Order 3066 by Dailenna, I will be a happy bunny. It's a Fullmetal Alchemist (manga) fic that explores Riza Hawkeye and Roy Mustang's time in Ishval and is a brilliant example of how to comprehensively grind characters down, with an exquisite eye for the mundane details that surround atrocity. It is as much about boredom and numbness as it is the misery of serving in a pointless, genocidal war and the dawning realisation you're doing so on the side of the perpetrators.
One of my greatest ambitions is to be able to write proper horror and this is the kind of excoriating story I aspire to.
(On a more topical and light-hearted note, I aspire to the kind of comic timing LaoraRyn managed with The Scientific Method, a Gundam 00 fic that played a not-insignificant role in me deciding to make Haros more than a sight gag in an IBO setting.)

Thank you so much for asking so many questions!

Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them; While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain: In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened, And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low; Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets: Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern. Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. - Ecclesiastes 12:1-7 KJV
This Bible passage continues to remind all of us that the day will one day come when we will have trouble seeing, hearing, eating and getting around. And when our final breath is taken, our soul will return to God, who created us and gave us the breath of life. It tells us how important it is to learn about God early in life. Studies have shown that those who come to the Christian faith early in life, even if they walk away for a while, will return to God. Oftentimes, this happens after they have children of their own, or when they experience a tragedy, and it humbles them to turn their hearts back to God.
There was a book was on the History of Knitting in the United States. In it, it spoke of the need to teach children when they were young, and they were required to finish at least three or four rounds on their stockings before they could play. Learning young was considered important so that they could continue to knit and contribute to the family when they grew old and had trouble seeing. If learning to knit was considered important to a person and that person's family, then consider how much more important and absolutely vital it is to always have God in our lives and to put Him first!
God blesses us and watches over us everyday, from our first breath to our last and everywhere inbetween. And God's Holy Word and His Spirit and overall presence brings the peace and warmth of His love, protection from evil and the promise of everlasting joy in His Kingdom of Heaven when our mortal life comes to an end. What better reasons for faith in God are there? God gives us good advice all throughout the Holy Scriptures. May we listen to Him and take His message to heart, so that we will feel secure in our beliefs today and all the days of our life. May we always remember to thank Father God Almighty and the LORD Jesus Christ for His almighty power and saving grace. For He is our strength, and He alone is able to save us, forgive our sins and gift us eternal salvation and entry into His Kingdom.
May we make sure that we give our hearts and lives to God and take time to seek and praise Him and share His Truth with the world daily. May the LORD our God and Father in Heaven help us to stay diligent and obedient and help us to guard our hearts in Him and His Holy Word daily. May He help us to remain faithful and full of excitement to do our duty to Him and for His glorious return and our reunion in Heaven as well as all that awaits us there. May we never forget to thank the LORD our God and our Creator and Father in Heaven for all this and everything He does and has done for us! May we never forget who He is, nor forget who we are in Christ and that God is always with us! What a mighty God we serve! What a Savior this is! What a wonderful Lord, God, Savior and King we have in Jesus Christ! What a loving Father we have found in Almighty God! What a wonderful God we serve! His will be done!
Thanks and glory be to God! Blessed be the name of the LORD! Hallelujah and Amen!

Remember Your Creator
1 Remember now thy Bo're (Creator) in the yamim of thy bechurot, while the yamei hara'ah come not, nor the shanim draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no chefetz (pleasure) in them; 2 While the shemesh, or the ohr, or the yarei'ach, or the kokhavim, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain; 3 In the yom when the shomrei habayit shall tremble, and the strong men shall stoop, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows grow dim, 4 And the delatayim (doors) shall be shut in the street, when the sound of the grinding fades, and he shall arise at the sound of a tzipor (bird), and all their banot hashir (daughters of song) are brought low; 5 Also when they shall be afraid of height, and fears shall be in the derech, and the almond tree shall blossom, and the grasshopper drags himself along, and desire shall fail; because haAdam goeth to his bais olam (eternal home), and the mourners go about the streets; 6 Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the bor (cistern). 7 Then shall the aphar return to ha'aretz as it was; and the ruach shall return unto HaElohim who gave it. 8 Hevel havalim, saith Kohelet; all is hevel.
9 And moreover, because Kohelet was chacham, he taught the people da'as; yea, he applied, and searched out, and set in order many meshalim (proverbs). 10 Kohelet searched to find out divrei chefetz; and that which was written was yosher, even divrei emes.
11 Divrei chachamim are like goads, and like nails firmly fixed are the collected sayings that are given by Ro'eh Echad (One Shepherd). 12 And further, by these, beni, be admonished; of making many sefarim there is no ketz; and much study is a weariness of the basar.
13 Let us hear the sof (conclusion) of the whole matter; Fear HaElohim, and of His commandments be shomer mitzvot; for this is the whole duty of haAdam. 14 For HaElohim shall bring kol ma'aseh (every work) into mishpat (judgment), with every ne’lam (secret thing, concealed thing), whether it be tov (good), or whether it be rah (evil). — Ecclesiastes 12 | Orthodox Jewish Bible (OJB) Orthodox Jewish Bible Copyright © 2002, 2003, 2008, 2010, 2011 by Artists for Israel International. It's so fucked up. Every once in a while after reading news and analysis and opinions about the war I remember: Russia can just stop.
I don't mean that at this point just stopping is enough to end sanctions or not be held accountable etc. I'm not talking about a ceasefire to start negotiations.
I just mean this war. Literally nothing compelled these actions that was not within their own control.
Whatever narrative about the reasons you believe in, none of them actually offer a situation in which Russia is facing anything truly existential that made it necessary to start this war or to keep it going.
Nothing justifies it. Nothing hangs on the balance for them if they stop. They still have their nukes. People still buy their oil. Nothing changes for them.
Again, I don't care about political and security "fears". I'm not talking about Putin's ego and plans.
I mean solid on the ground reality about Russian economic, cultural, political or social world that was never at stake at any point.
The cruelty is staggering. They can just fucking stop killing us and their own. They can just stop this genocide at any point and be no less secure in their position as a nuclear power and a major oil exporter etc.
They have made no agreement to fight this fight that they might need to break. Their people won't starve without Ukrainian wheat. Their ships have access to multiple oceans and seas. They could have done just fine without invading.
Then we all sit here discussing with great leaders of Europe how we can reach cease fire, or apply fair sanctions, or where to draw the line at supporting Ukraine when in the end Russia can just stop. But sure, let's be fair and even-handed with them.
And this point absolutely floors me. What an absolute horrid, inhumane mindset, to decide not just to slaughter people who posed you no threat, but to also do it to your own when you hold the power and the cards and can chose not to throw your son's into the meat grinder for some fucking land bridge or whatever.
Russia can stop this war at any point and just fucking leave.
They have all the choices and options without real consequences at this point and they act like the world is being mean and unreasonable when they can. Just. Stop.
Ukraine didn't start this war but everyone expects Ukraine to twist itself into pretzels to end it. Making impossible decisions about occupied territories, deported and detained and POWs and how much land it can live with losing, how to guarantee the genocide won't just cary on, how-to survive as a people and a nation, how to rebuild and how to have some guarantee that it won't happen again in a few years.
Yet Russia can just stop.
And the consequences? It gets to keep more of its young men alive.
It can make it's billions on oil and gas more easily.
It can keep posturing about its might to it's own cowed populace and look big and important.
They won't need to rebuild their cities or try to recover their cultural spaces and monuments.
They won't need to struggle to find their loved ones sent to far flung parts of Russia.
Their children won't need to learn how to walk without their limbs on their new prosthetics or face the life long trauma of being bombed and seeing your parents and siblings shot, blown up, raped and starving to death.
They won't need to plead for aid and help to crawl out from under a devastated economy.
They won't need to worry about where theur kids will go to school or their sick to hospital because their schools and hospitals haven't been levelled.
They can stop at any time.
I fucking hate them so much.

All believers should recognise the grace and strength available to young persons. They should also help the youth to channel their strength and talents to serve God and others. When young people discover their divine purposes early and are guided to fulfil them, we will have less of unfulfilled and misdirected youth. The future of nations will also be more secure. Beloved young man and woman, this is your brightest hour to shine for the Lord. The things you can easily do for God now would be ten times harder for you to do in 30 years to come. David slew Goliath as a teenager. Jesus Christ and His disciples were young and they did greater works in the name of the Lord. In the Old Testament, one of the most cherished prophets of God, Samuel, started even younger than a teenager. God spoke to him and used him mightily so much so that none of his words fell to the ground. In Psalms 127:4, the Bible says, “As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth.” God needs you too to perform His greater works. The old people are handy but their strength is little. The glory of the youth is his strength. The youth is mostly admired for their strength. The Bible compares the strength of the youth with that of an eagle. God used Daniel, Meshach, Shadrach and Abednego mightily in Babylon, though they were young men. The name of the Lord was praised in the heathen land because these Hebrew young men rose up to be mighty weapons in the hand of God. You too can be His battle axe! In the New Testament, Apostle Paul assigned a high post to Brother Timothy in the church as a young man. He told him, “Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity” (1 Timothy 4:12). Timothy served the Lord fervently from his youthful age. Beloved, I encourage you to imitate Timothy, Daniel, Meshach, Shadrach and Abdenego. Similarly, adults should counsel young men and women to accept Christ and serve Him wholeheartedly.

DCLM DAILY MANNA 14th February 2023 DEVOTIONAL
MESSAGE: One thing very common to most people especially the youth, is the inability to reflect deeply about the possible outcome of many of the decisions and actions they take. This is even more pronounced during festive periods. At such times, youths tend to throw caution to the wind as they give themselves to unrestrained pleasures. Recently, there was a report of four young secondary school leavers who got drowned at Elegushi Beach, Lekki, Lagos, Nigeria while trying to celebrate the end of their secondary school final examinations. Every year, we keep having records of such tragedies marking similar celebrations like birthdays, graduation parties and even valentine day which today is noted for. Those who fall, victims of these tragic incidences, never imagined that such supposed moments of joy and celebrations will result in their tragic end. Our passage today is a direct call to the youths to be more reflective about their lives and actions. The Preacher urges them to see this time of their youthful age as the best time to remember their Creator and surrender their lives to Him. He cautions them against pushing that decision forward till it becomes practically too late to take the decision any more as death would have come and forever end every opportunity of getting right with God. A life lived in pleasure without God is vain. There is no better time to draw our young people to the Lord than now. Today is the real day everyone actually has assurance and guarantee over. In fact, whatever will happen at the very next moment is not within the control of anyone. It is for this reason that it is considered foolish for anyone to gamble with his life and opportunity which today presents. Young people must quit the idea that youthful age is supposed to be a period for pleasure. It is foolhardy to hope to get reconciled with God later in one’s life after one has passed the youthful age. There is no time better than now! Are you already caught in the euphoria of the lustful and sinful activities that mostly charactise today? What if today is to be your very last here on earth; how prepared are you to face God? The real day to mark is the day you get reconciled with your Creator. Why not make today that day! THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: A life lived in pleasure without God is a wasted life. Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when youwill say,
"I find no pleasure in them".
before the sun and the light and the moon and the stars grow dark, and the clouds return after the rain; when the keepers of the house tremble, and the strong men stoop, when the grinders cease because they are few, and those looking through the windows grow dim; when the doors to the street are closed and the sound of grinding fades; when people rise up at the sound of birds, but all their songs grow faint; when people are afraid of heights and of dangers in the streets; when the almond tree blossoms and the grasshopper drags itself along and desire no longer is stirred.
Then people go to their eternal home and mourners go about the streets.
Remember him - before the silver cord is severed, and the golden bowl is broken; before the pitcher is shattered at the spring, and the wheel broken at the well and the dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.

A City of Bells
Chapter IX — Part III
“And now,” said the Bishop, when the boys could eat no more, “I’m afraid we must go to evensong.”
This was not the end of the party but only an interruption to it, and it was not even necessary to go out of doors, for a covered way led from the Palace to the Cloisters and the Cloisters led directly into the Cathedral.
A silence fell upon them all as they entered the Cloisters, for the Cloisters always imposed silence. They were built round three sides of a square, the fourth side being occupied by the Cathedral itself, and in the square the dead were buried; those very same bishops whose pictured faces had smiled and frowned upon the Christmas party, together with deans and canons whose names on the headstones had been washed out by wind and rain. It was bright moonlight now, with a blaze of stars, and the headstones showed up black and sharp against the snow. The feet of the living clanked harshly as they passed and all unconsciously they tried to go on tiptoe. Mr. Phillips, the organist, had gone on ahead with Peppercue and Barleycorn so that when the others came into the Cathedral the candles were already flowering in the darkness and the organ playing softly.
They began with a hymn, “Once in royal David’s city,” after which evensong pursued its accustomed course until they got to the anthem, and it was here that Felicity and Jocelyn, who had never before attended evensong on the party day, had a shock, for it was Steggall’s anthem, “Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth.”
It was always sung on the party day and Grandfather considered it a most depressing choice, and had said so more than once at Chapter meetings, but was not listened to because what always had been done at Torminster always was done, suitable or not, and would be till the Day of Judgment, but Felicity and Jocelyn were not concerned with its suitability so much as with its beauty.
Felicity had always considered the twelfth chapter of Ecclesiastes the most haunting poem ever written. She found in it the same beauty, tinged with a feeling of eeriness, that years later she was to find in the poetry of Mr. Walter de la Mare. “Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them; while the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain.” A boy’s clear treble rang out in the great Cathedral, where the candlelight fitfully shone on shadowed faces and carved stone and wood dark with age, while above them the pillars soared into darkness and all around them the night pressed in. A strange mutter of voices, quiet but very ominous, took up the next verse. “In the days when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows shall be darkened.”This lament for the fate of man, for the passing of his youth and joy and the coming of old age and death, was very queer and frightening, all the more so because one was not quite certain what it was all about. “Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher, all is vanity … The mourners go about the streets … The wheel broken at the cistern.” Was that the end of the matter? “The spirit shall return unto God Who gave it.” In that word “return” Felicity suddenly found comfort. The fate of man in this world was certainly a thing to be lamented over, a thing of uncertainty and loss and pain, and no amount of easy optimism could alter the facts of the case, yet in death he “returned” to his starting point of sun and moon and stars that are not darkened. Her mind wandering, she thought that the writer of this poem, when he chose sun and moon and stars as the supreme givers of joy, must have felt as Ferranti had done that man can best understand the meaning of perfection when he takes as its symbol a circle of white light. They were very akin, Ferranti and this writer whose name she did not know … Suddenly she started and touched Jocelyn’s arm as he sat beside her. The mist of sorrow that was in his eyes cleared away as he looked at her and whispered the thought that was in both their minds. “The answer … Our play must be presented as a great lament.”
The anthem ended and they knelt down to pray, their lowered eyelids shutting out even the faint candlelight so that each of them was alone in darkness. To Jocelyn, even more deeply depressed than Felicity because depression came more naturally to him, it seemed that the darkness of human life was too great to be endured. The words of the prayers flowed on unheard by him as he sank deeper and deeper into desolation. It seemed that he had touched rock-bottom when Felicity, wise through that knowledge of his thoughts that had come to her through love, put out a hand and gently touched his side. Instantly his spirits rose a little and opening his eyes he saw the candlelight. So often in his experience the minor miseries of life had been eased by the touch of humanity; would the great miseries, when they came, be eased by God’s touch? One would have to be old to know and the old, he had noticed, and not the young, Were more often the men of faith.
They sang a last hymn and filed silently out of the dark Cathedral and through the moonlit Cloisters. Safely back in the Palace any eerie feelings that might remain were dispelled by Mrs. Phillips. “How those boys can sing like that after all that tea,” she said, “beats me.”

The Inevitable Creep of Death
Ecclesiastes 12:1 (ESV) Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come and the years draw near of which you will say, “I have no pleasure in them”
Solomon ends his old age treatise with an important lesson to the young. Let God be the center of your life when you are young. If not, you'll grow old, discontent, angry at the world, regretful, and perhaps bitter. Why? Because as you get older, life gets harder. Not so much in that you are challenged with new problems but that your body and mind are challenged to do old things.
Solomon's last admonition is a simple yet profound truth. You will be the result of your life when you get older. And when you're young you're far too uninformed to know what decisions you should make. So look to God when you're young and your life will be pleasurable when you're old.
He then uses a series of metaphors to describe the process of getting older:
Ecclesiastes 12:2 (ESV) before the sun and the light and the moon and the stars are darkened and the clouds return after the rain,
Here he speaks of vision loss. And what you will see are the terrible choices you made when you did not consider God - that is the clouds returning.
Ecclesiastes 12:3 (ESV) in the day when the keepers of the house tremble, and the strong men are bent, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those who look through the windows are dimmed,
Here he speaks of trembling hands, weakened legs, tooth loss and even more vision impairment.
Ecclesiastes 12:4 (ESV) and the doors on the street are shut—when the sound of the grinding is low, and one rises up at the sound of a bird, and all the daughters of song are brought low—
Here he talks about hearing loss (doors on the street being shut and low grinding sounds.). He also speaks of the tendency of the aged to rise early and yet not behold fully the morning songs of birds.
Ecclesiastes 12:5 (ESV) they are afraid also of what is high, and terrors are in the way; the almond tree blossoms, the grasshopper drags itself along, and desire fails, because man is going to his eternal home, and the mourners go about the streets—
Here he mentions the inability to try new things (terrors in the way), gray hair (almond tree blossoms), and a general sense of sloth about yourself. Desire fading is referring to a diminished sex drive.
Ecclesiastes 12:6–8 (ESV) before the silver cord is snapped, or the golden bowl is broken, or the pitcher is shattered at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern, 7 and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it. 8 Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher; all is vanity.
Finally, several metaphors sum up the resultant death awaiting us all.
If there's a problem with the young it is they do not take the effort to listen to the old. They are certain their lives will go on forever and every mistake can ultimately be made up. After all, they are under the illusion they have all the time in the world.
But Solomon was perhaps the most notable person in his day. And he too experienced the slow and inevitable creep of death. His building projects behind him, his lovers no longer interested him and all his gold and silver could not stop his life from ending.
No one can stop it and yet we like to push it out of our minds. But notice that Solomon does not ask us to think about death but about our Creator! He is the one who gave us this life and in Christ when this is over, we pass from death to new life. We enter an eternal realm of glory.
Solomon warns us of searching for meaning beyond these fundamental realities:
Ecclesiastes 12:11–12 (ESV) The words of the wise are like goads, and like nails firmly fixed are the collected sayings; they are given by one Shepherd. 12 My son, beware of anything beyond these. Of making many books there is no end, and much study is a weariness of the flesh.
When we keep our lives simple before God, we avoid the high cost of seeking out what may never materialize as we imagined. So we do well to listen to this old preacher and righly align our lives in the wisdom he's offered.
Ecclesiastes 12:13–14 (ESV) The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. 14 For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.
