let me say it again: Nina Zenik is not skinny. She is fat. She is hot. Those two things are not mutually exclusive, so why am I still seeing fanart where she’s thin?????

the movie really undersells the fact that frodo spent half a year planning to make his departure from the shire as inconspicuous as possible and merry and pippin and sam saw him doing that, figured out he was leaving the shire and that it had something to do with bilbo’s ring, and then spent nearly as long preparing to go with him. icons

One difference between the Lord of the Rings books and the Peter Jackson films that I find really interesting is what the hobbits find when they return to the Shire.
In the books, they return from the War, only to see that the war has not left their home untouched. Not only has it not left their home unscathed, battle and conflict is still actively ravaging the Shire. They return, weary and battle-scarred, to find a home actively wounded and in need of rescue and healing. All four launch themselves into defending their home and rousting those harming it, and eventually succeed. But their idyllic home has been damaged, and even once healed, is never quite again the Shire they set out to save.
In contrast, in the Jackson films, they return to a Shire shockingly untouched by the horrors of war. The hobbits of the Shire talk, in the Green Dragon in Fellowship of the Ring, about not getting involved with issues "beyond our borders," and it seems those issues have not invaded their sanctuary. After having been bowed to by kings, dwarves, elves, and men alike at the coronation in Gondor, their only acknowledgment upon returning home is a skeptical head shake from an older hobbit.
One of the most poignant scenes to me in Return of the King (and there are a considerable amount) is the scene where Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin are sitting in the Green Dragon. The pub patrons bustle around them, talking loudly, clapping excitedly, drinking cheerfully, just as they had in the beginning of the story. But the four hobbits sit silently, watching almost curiously at what was once familiar but is now foreign to them. Their home has not changed. But they have.
Which is the deeper hurt? To come to your home to find it irrevocably changed, despite all you did to keep it untouched and the same? Or to return home but no longer feeling at home, because it is only you that is irrevocably changed?

Hello! You have been gifted the brain dump bug! Use when you want an excuse to talk about something that's been rotating in your brain!
thanks for the ask!!! Here are some whale facts I learned today and am currently obsessing over :)
Each whale family speaks their own language
Orcas having hunting “secrets” and tricks that are known only to specific regions and even families
Ex: only New Zealand Orcas know that flipping a stingray upside down will put it to sleep!! No other orcas who eat stingrays in any area of the world know this!!
Antarctic Orcas have babysitters! And their pods can be as many as 75 orcas (which is huge!)
Orcas will push their dead calves through the sea for days, even weeks as they mourn.
Patagonia orcas will go up to the beach, hide in the ocean, and then get ONTO THE BEACH with the waves to catch pups. Like they time their attack with the wave so they’re just emerging g from the water onto the beach. It’s crazy. And this is a skill that has to be taught by an elder orca while the “student” is young and is passed down from generation to generation!
There is no record of a direct orca attack on humans in the wild! There’s no scientific reason for this! A videographer in the doc I just watched was gifted half a stingray by the matriarch of the orca pod just because!! She might have thought he was an underfed calf or something.
Humpback whales in Alaska have yearly reunions with their friends

Lockwood and Lucy swapping abilities would not go well because Lucy is constantly staring at Lockwood and not ghosts and Lockwood has audio processing issues.

Can't find that post that's like 'you don't like that fat character if you have to portray them skinny', but soooo true. Thinking of the S&B adaptation, and all the skinny Nina fanart I've seen around lately. You can talk a big game, but you don't actually like Nina Zenik.

if you want to actually start to end homelessness, you need to give homeless people unconditional homes, including when we use them to do drugs or sit around drinking. either housing is unconditional or it isn’t
someone sitting at home alone, an active alcoholic, squandering your charity, drinking all day is better situation than a street homeless alcoholic. someone using drugs in your charity house is better than them doing the same w no shelter
most of you would not like most street homeless people, I definitely don’t and didn’t when I was street homeless. for every one person who uses unconditional shelter to turn themselves around, someone else will do jack shit and very slowly, if ever, work through the issues that made them homeless, will maybe never be able to live independently. still better than street homelessness, still worth doing. ultimately either you believe that shelter should be universal or you don’t
homeless people actually can’t be rehabilitated if you want to end homelessness. we either affirm the right to shelter for the worst drunken, lying, filthy, cheating, self destructive homeless people that exist, genuinely irredeemable wankers, or we concede that shelter is not a right

Netflix robbed us of seeing Cameron and Ruby act out the aching, mortifying scene of Lucy's reunion with Lockwood at her Studio Apartment of Depression and I'll never forgive them for it.

I want a story about a king whose son is prophesied to kill him so the king is like “whatever what am I supposed to do, kill my own kid wtf is wrong with you” so he just raises him as normal, doesn’t even tell him about the prophecy, and instead of some convoluted twist of events that leads to the king’s murder the son grows up and when the king is very old and dying and in excruciating pain the kid is just like alright I'mma put him out of his misery.
