Please, when you see something written in Cyrillic, don't assume right away that it's russian. Russian is not the only language that uses Cyrillic. There are also Ukrainian, Belarusian, Bulgarian, Macedonian, Montenegrin, Serbian, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Tajik, Mongolian.
It's a sensitive topic especially for us Ukrainians because russian language is a weapon. It's a colonial language, it's presented like one and only true slavic language, it erases and replaces other languages. Belarusian is literally on the verge of extinction because of russian. Ukrainian has been banned 134 times throughout history, it is still called a "village language", a dialect of russian. Russian colonialism is literally the reason why there are so many russian speaking people in Ukraine (I was one of them btw). Ukrainian is banned on russian occupied territories and people are getting in trouble or even killed for using it there, Ukrainian POWs in russian captivity are getting brutally beaten for speaking Ukrainian.
Like okay, I can get why there's this confusion, so here's a clue to understand that the language you're looking at definitely is not russian — the letter і. If you see ї (like i but with two dots) it's 100% Ukrainian. If you see j it's Serbian. Russian alphabet also doesn't have such letters as Ђ, Љ, Њ, Ў, Џ (dont confuse with Ц ). Yes, it's not always gonna be easy to detect that the language in front of you is not russian, but when you have trouble with it just ask or run it through any translation app and it'll probably tell you the language.
Hope this will be helpful.

You wanna talk about settler colonialism? Talk about this:
During the two-year occupation of Melitopol, Zaporizhzhia region, Russia has brought over 100,000 of its citizens into the city
(Svidomi)
100k people in 1 (one) occupied city. I'm not talking about Mariupol, I'm not talking about Crimea, or Donetsk, Luhansk. It's just Melitopol, it's just the last two years.

Historically, some of the biggest Russian opponents to domestic repressions are imperialists. Solzhenitsyn, most famously, is, on the one hand, bravely fighting the GULAG, and on the other hand - a vile imperialist with a sense of fascism. These aren't new phenomena, in many ways. Somehow one feels that [moving away from imperialism] is unlikely in Russia, because it goes so deep. This is just the latest Russian invasion of Ukraine, this is not just one war, this has been going on for centuries. Russian imperialism is embedded in Russian humour, Russian literature, codes of thinking. It's not about statements. It's not just about policies. When Pushkin writes, I don't know, "Кавказ подо мною" ("The Caucasus lies below me"), one of his famous poems... the amount of imperialist psychology that goes into saying that - that goes very, very deep. So until those much, much deeper sort of deep cultural roots of Russian imperialism, racism and oppression are addressed, nothing is changed. So let's think what we have agency over, in a way. [...] we can change the way Russia is perceived globally and in the West. Because this idea that Russia is a great power that has the right to a sphere of influence and that has the right to suppress others because it's great - that sits very deep in people's heads across the world. We can start working on that. So why don't we start working on that? Let's get people in my world - Britain, America - to re-read the Russian classics and understand how much imperialism and oppression of others there's there. Let's start de-mystifying this idea of "the Russian mystic soul" and really start rooting it to very specific histories of violence and oppression. Let's start changing the way Russia is perceived, so it's no longer seen as inevitable and so vast and huge that you have to drop on your knees in front of it, which still sits in people's heads. That means changing the way the universities overfocus on Russia studies and completely silence the voices of Ukrainians, Georgians, Kazakhs... There's so much we can do that will make people's perceptions of Russia rooted in reality. And they will help gain self-confidence to say, "Stop, we're not dependent on you".

Am I the only one here who is so damn angry about the fact that a large portion of the Slavic representation on the Western media is either Russian, Russian-coded (e.g. the Grisha Universe by Leigh Bardugo) or copies the narratives about other Slavic nations that exist in the Russian discourse about them?

The Russian state using ethnic minorities as cannon fodder - with a focus on Buryats
Article written in 2022, update on the Free Buryatia Foundation in September 2023 given at the end of the post.
Tumblr media
Putin announced on October 14th 2022 that by the end of October, his partial mobilisation process would be complete
Tumblr media
The recruitment target was 300,000. 222,000 were recruited, and it was claimed that there'd be no more plans for future recruitment
The mobilisation process soaked nation wide outrage which lead to mass protests.
It drew in criticism from some of the Russian political elite
The mobilisation process disproportionately affected ethnic minorities/impoverished regions (many impoverished regions have a high ethnic minority population)
Tumblr media
Tuva Republic
Regions that held high populations of ethnic minorities bared the brunt of war-related deaths.
Both Ukrainian media and authorities have levelled accusations at Russian ethnic minorities - that they committed war crimes in Bucha, Ukraine
This accusations was made in May 2022 by Lydmyla Denisova, Ukrainian ombudsman for human rights
Tumblr media
Buryats and Chechens were being accused of this
This was a form of scapegoating (not to say they 0 ethnic minorities have committed war crimes in Ukraine of course)
The Free Buryat Foundation investigated this and produced a report that challenged the notion that Buryats were ever sent to Bucha, let alone being responsible for the war crimes committed
Tumblr media
Victoria Maladaeva is the vice president of the Free Buryatia Foundation.
Tumblr media
She said:
Dagestan, Tuva Republic and Buryatia Republic have the highest death tolls
Moscow, with 17 million, had >50 deaths.
Buryatia with only 980,000 had 364
A Buryat is 7.8 x more likely to die in the war compared to an ethnic Russian.
A Tuvan is 10.4x more likely
The biggest losses were at the beginning of the war and numbers gradually decreased.
Mobilisation was first and foremost carried out in ethnic republics
The day Putin announced this, authorities came to Buryatia at night, went into people's homes and took them from their beds.
No one was given draft notices
They even took men with multiple children, men from the same family
Endangered ethnic groups reside in Dagestan
Tumblr media
There are very small communities of those people with populations of around 13,000
Despite this, those minorities were still drafted
There are also very small communities in the Sakha Republic.
They are so remote, helicopters are needed to be called for medical treatment
They almost never come because of how remote these communities are
Funnily enough, helicopters came immediately to draft those people upon Putin's announcement
Putin is a Russian imperialist through and through
None Russians are treated like second class citizens
Russian cultural chauvinism is seen even in small things - such as names
Putin would frequently mispronounce Kazakhstan's president's name. If you have an ethnic Buryat name for example, Russians are reluctant to use it, instead assigning you an "easier" Russian name
Tumblr media
Kassym-Jomart Tokayev
Unfortunately, many of the people of Buryatia believe in the Russian narrative about Nazi ideology in Ukraine
It is one of the missions of the free Buryatia Foundation to help Buryats understand that this is Russian propaganda
The focus on Buryat/ethnic minority war crimes has a racial element
When an ethnic minority commits a war crime, their ethnicity is singled out
It should not matter the ethnicity of a war criminal
78 Buryat soldiers from the 11th air assault brigade were barred from terminating their contract
They were imprisoned in Luhansk.
Only Ilya Kaminskiy returned. The fate of the other men is unknown
The Free Buryatia Foundation knows they cannot help everyone but they do their best. They help people in terminating their contracts for example and have been quite successful in this.
The Free Buryatia Foundation was established to counter Russian propaganda and to protest the war.
People worldwide took an interest to this, so they founded the free Buryatia Foundation.
The Free Buryatia Foundation is the first ethnic anti war organisation in Russia
Tumblr media
They aided in founding anti war organisations in other ethnic regions such as Tuva, Kalmykia, Udmurtia, Sakha
Many Buryats fled to Mongolia and Kazakhstan
Tumblr media
Some men were able to come back after being drafted, some were not
The economic situation for Buryatia is dire. It ranked 81st out of 85 of Russia's regions when it came to living standards
Buryats had to spend money on a list of supplies for war that Russia did not provide them
Very recently, on September 1st, Russia banned the Free Buryatia Foundation, labelling them as undesirable and anti Russian.
Here is the website for the Free Buryatia Foundation:
And here is where you can donate:
Please spread around or give what you can.

RUSSIA’S SHAM ELECTIONS, where people are “helped” by armed soldiers who check to ensure they vote correctly—or else.
Does this look like they are helping to conduct a fair, peaceful and democratic election process? Or does it look like repressed voters under duress, who are being forced to vote for Putin under threat of armed Russian soldiers? (source) (source) (source)

Like I mentioned in my last post, I tend not to dwell on politics much, but I accidentally came across an article in Politico about the history of Russian colonialism in Alaska, and just when I thought I couldn't hate Putin any more...ooh boy. Read it here.

Reading about the Bolshevik army of the Soviet Russia storming Kyiv 106 years ago, in January 1918.
Heavy artillery shelling of the city for days, targeting the city centre. Use of chemical weapons.
Once they got into the city, they proceeded with their standard terror methods. Summary executions, murder, robberies, rapes. They shot random passersby in the streets and then immediately took their clothes off in search for anything of value to loot. The corpses were just left lying in city parks for days.
Before getting to Kyiv, the terror committed by Muravyov's bolshevik army in other places was unspeakable.
Their methods just never change.
Article on the topic (in Ukrainian, but you can use the browser translation)
Soon afterwards, the bolsheviks got kicked out of Kyiv. In March 1918, Soviet Russia officially recognised Ukraine's independence. And then later that very year, it invaded again, and occupied it.
Regimes in russia change names, but its essence has never changed in centuries.

Being an Eastern European/Central-Eastern European/post-Soviet fan of the Hunger Games, I have to say that it really rubs me the wrong way when US-American/other Western fans throw a tantrum when u tell them that u see similarities between how Panem functions and how other empires than the US function, too. Like, even in criticism of imperialism, everything has to revolve solely around Americans.
I do not mean to say that Suzanne Collins did not write “The Hunger Games” trilogy and “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” without taking inspiration from her geopolitical, economic and cultural context, because she obviously did, and those elements are very obviously visible in the story.
But those are not the only ones.
Another very obvious inspiration for Panem was the Roman Empire, and surprise, surprise! There are more than one European/Western empire that took/takes inspiration from Ancient Rome. Britain, France, Spain, also Russia, just to name a few. That means that people from different regions can have different associations when reading different texts of culture and that is perfectly normal. It does not mean that they are manipulated by the goddamn CIA if they don’t have the same associations as Americans while reading it 😆
And for instance, for me as an Eastern European, the first association I had while reading THG trilogy for the first time, for instance, was the USSR and modern-day Russia, simply because I come from this geopolitical context and I know it better.
Ceasar Flickerman even reminded me of several modern Russian propagandists, including Vladimir Solovyov.
The political and economic structure of Panem reminded me of the way the modern-day Russian Federation functions, with monumental Moscow at its center, and oblasts and republics basically serving as feudal provinces for the production of goods and natural resources. Regions and republics in which people often lack access to basic goods and improvements.
Heck, even President Snow very often reminded me of people like Joseph Stalin and Vladimir Putin, with his pretending to represent the people only to hold a tight grip on the state as an authoritarian/dictatorial leader.
Does that deny the American (or America-inspired) elements in THG universe? Of course not. But it certainly does not mean that others should not also see the empires that abused them and their ancestors in Suzanne Collin’s novels.
Because some elements are just common, dare I even say, universal, in many empires.

How to make any territories "originally Russian" in 4 ✨easy steps✨:
First, you need to take the indigenous population of these territories (eg Crimean Tatars or Ukrainians) and deport them to remote areas like Siberia or Kolyma, killing thousands of men, women and children in the process. This way, if years later some of the people come back to their homeland, the number of indigenous population will never return to the previous level.
In the meantime, relocate many Russian families to the now vacant territories. You might also want to build several military bases in those areas, thus resettling many of your military men along with their families. In just a couple of generations, these territories will be populated largely by the descendants of your soldiers (and your new soldiers, of course!).
Establish language control in these territories. You can do this either by banning the local language entirely (i.e. making teaching, literature and songs in that language illegal), or simply by creating such an environment in which it will be possible to achieve any success in any specialty only by using the Russian language. You can mix these two techniques together.
If you still want to reduce the native population, try starting a war and using that population as cannon fodder. Highly effective!
If you did everything right, congratulations! Now the true experts, such as Elon Musk and many other "very intelligent'" people, will call these territories "originally Russian" and will urge the people there to surrender to you so that you can continue to torture, repress and kill them👍 Also you will always have a neat casus belli on your hands!

Please do not post or reblog Meduza.
yes, it's Russian "liberal, anti war" media. No, please do not spread it around. At least if it's about anything Ukraine-related. Seen an article? Go to the (Ukrainian) source. Reblog that instead.
Case in point: they stole Babel's material about Ukrainian art-historian fighting against Russia appropriating artists and art of other nations. They added their Russian colonial spin on it, posted it and kicked off a storm of Russian fasc who are now attacking said historian.
