Feenie’s magecraft focuses on transmutation. With select materials, he can transmute one thing into another. He mainly uses his magecraft to heal wounds and create pseudo organs and flesh.

Has at one point intimidated a person by showing them a transmuted heart and lying that it’s theirs.

His wish for the Grail is… Well, he plans to give the Grail to the Association, so he doesn’t particularly care about the Grail.

Thinks Gene Rum is a cooooooooooooold bitch with a stick up her arse.

Gene and Rott has some history. Both tend to be employed by the same people.

Rott may be a murderer, but he has standards! No killing children, no harming children, if employer does anything to children he will kill them.

Has killed more employers than actual hit targets.

In the manga, Rott can change into silver lizard form. He doesn’t like changing his form since the more he uses that ability, the more monstrous and mindless he becomes.

Rott is indeed a Chimera, a mage who is able to turn into an animal to some degree. He didn’t become a Chimera from his own volition, so that’s also a reason why he rarely uses his ability.

As a Chimera, he’s gained some lizard perks even in his human form. For starters, his saliva is toxic and has lizard eyes. He also can shed his skin to heal certain wounds. In Chimera form, he’s covered in nigh-indestructible scales.

Rott was an orphan who was adopted by a mage named Zagreus Berzinsky. The man wanted to create mythical beast of yore by forcefully fusing children with all kinds of beasts. Rott was one of those children.

Rott was able to escape with a few kids. Eventually, they made their way to the Clocktower. While he himself never went to school, he 100% made sure his “younger siblings” are enrolled in the Clocktower. It’s for their safety.

His wish for the Grail is for an antidote for Chimeratization. Oh! And to kill off Zagreus too!

Gene (Jean?) Rum

Gene, short for Genevieve. (Or Jean, short for Jeanette)

Straight-laced lipstick lesbian.

Likes books because, unlike people, they’re actually engaging. Nah she’s just a bit awkward and self-conscious.

Grew up reading Shakespeare, Arabian Nights, and Grimm’s Fairy Tales.

Since she’s broken into Ivan the Terrible’s library at least once, I can tell you that she’s a professional lock-picker. Wizard who took a level in Rogue.

Gene’s magecraft focuses of aeromancy, the control of wind.

Her most famous technique is the ability to make thread-thin tornado chakrams. Anyone who touches these tordano-wheels will get sliced. If she focuses a bit harder, she can imbue her chakrams with lightning.

She makes those storm-threads with a small buckler-sized spinning wheel she bring along. It’s her mystic code and she’s very protective of it.

Cabik Pentel

The current patriarch of the Pentel Clan, a family of esoteric assassins/mercenary group.

Hardly ever emotes so it’s hard to tell what he’s thinking.

But he’s usually very honest and won’t sugar nor exaggerate his words.

The only reason he’s can understand other people (to a degree) is because his brother is such a good person.

Yeah, Cabik loves his brother very much. And as such, he loves his brother’s twin daughters. He’s somewhat of a cool uncle to them.

Doesn’t quite know how he feels about being patriarch since the clan is awful as all hell. He’s good at being an assassin, so he’ll continue the work in the meantime.

but track has always been his kinda thing regardless of where he’s at, tried out for track his freshmen yr of high school n was the star of the team tbh

he met a gal going by the name dinah during a track meet the middle of his freshmen yr

she was taking photos for the yearbook and stuttered over her words more often than not, even when she teased william

and like...tbh? william adored her immediately

it really wasn’t soon at all until they started dating, like, they were the high school couple

they complimented each other v v well and were prolly always together lbr

i’m hc’ing that his family also adored dinah like it’s law

dinah is the one who like...really encouraged him to pursue writing as something more serious than just for fun, because will had always enjoyed writing--esp poetry--but he didn’t want it to get in the way of his future w the stables ??

and like...fuck, they were so cute, guys. they were so mf cute.

dinah got diagnosed w/ lung cancer in the beginning of their junior year; she began online school halfway thru b/c she didn’t have the energy physically to go to class, went thru a looot of chemo

william was with her the entire time, y’know, if he wasn’t in school or at track he’d probably be with her the most, trying to cheer her up in the ways he could, helped her study for their SATs bc he knew it was rly important to her

by the summer she was in remission and they thought that was it--still super fucking careful, but they really genuinely thought that that was the end of it y’know ?? that she’d just be better ??

they got into a few months of senior year with her being healthy enough to go to school again, but the further time passed...dinah relapsed, rapidly, and the cancer had spread to other parts of her body

they spent their last valentine’s day in the hospital, and the next day she was gone

it...crushed william, just kind of changed his life, y’know? dinah was all he knew and he really didn’t know how to live w/o her

spent a lot of his time locked away in his room or never even home to begin with, just wandering about hopelessly or sleeping, or trying to sleep that is

poured his heart into his poetry, though--in dinah’s honor, he tried so mf hard to keep doing what he loved even though he was so hurt

it was because of his constant hard work, and dinah’s past encouragements, that william entered and won a poetry contest during his senior year. got a hella scholarship that made everybody proud of him, just b/c he was ~defying odds~

kinda put on this mask so that others wouldn’t see how bad he was doing ?? b/c he’s the level-headed brother, y’kno, the one who always had his shit together and knew what he was doing

dinah and william won cutest couple and even prom king n queen as a sort of tribute to dinah but will didn’t even go to prom tbh he got drunk and threw cans of beer off of a cliff

anyways, he graduated high school n attended ucla bc that was his dad’s school and gdi he’s tryn his best to follow in his footsteps

even got into his dad’s frat b/c he was that determined

he didn’t rly partake much in parties but he did indulge every once in a while, y’know, just to do it, was finally getting his shit back together and doing well for once y’know?? he joined track n took it p seriously

when angela heart died, all of that fell apart again

he took an entire year off of school b/c at that point his mental health had taken a really bad turn, depression was sort of controlling his life and he was spiraling so mf far down that he sometimes couldn’t recognize himself

during that time he published his first and second poetry book under w.c. heart; it’s super morbid, depressing, you can pretty much feel his depression as it manifests in the pages. it begins with poetry from his earlier years, of when he was with dinah and then afterwards, when she dies

the second poetry book is about healing, and then how sometimes you can fall back even when you’re doing good (i.e. around the time lil baby angel died)

when he finally did go back to school he had a much better mindset, seemed to be doing well--was one of the best on the track team--partied a little harder, did drugs more often than usual but nothing too extreme y’know ??

his junior year he got into a p bad car accident n derailed into a body of water after crashing his side of the car into another and losing control of his vehicle

like honestly thank god for the stranger who immediately stopped their car and went totally-hero on the situation, they got william out of the car before he could drown and essentially saved his life, before calling 911 and just. disappearing as soon as the sirens were audible

somehow his left leg got mc’fucked in the incident and it just so happened to ruin his track career

also gave william a fear of swimming/deep water + driving. like. he never wants to be in control of a car again. it really added onto his anxiety and was probably the root of his panic disorder tbh

he took another year off of school to recover from his injuries and to just fucking...put himself in some therapy, because he knows. when it’s time to take care of himself. is really still determined to b the best, he’s just trying to take his time now.

got addicted to painkillers b/c of the injury, sought them out after his prescription ran out; it varies between oxy, vicodin, n percocets and like...they mix really badly w/ his antidepressants tbh ??

that’s v v hush-hush bc he doesn’t want people to worry about him moreso than they already do after like...all these tragic mf events y’know.

he had moved out of his greek house to live on his own but after his second time coming back to ucla he moved back in b/c that way somebody could kick his ass if he fell down the rabbit hole again y’know

his antidepressant, lexapro, causes hallucinations and now he’s been seeing dinah everywhere, hearing her voice, etc. etc. he thinks he’s finally going insane and also keeps it v hush hush b/c he doesn’t want people to think he is

he looks worse for wear but he just. keeps on pretendin’.

he’s always been the (or one of the) least fussy child, hated starting conflicts

if anything he’s always been a mediator ?? the peacemaker, tries to resolve things before they get outta hand

he hates fighting, physical n verbal, refuses to partake in it

even when dinah n him would get into arguments he’d be really quiet during them

that being said he wasn’t like antisocial or anything just bc he was quiet y’know ??

aaah, this was so so sweet of you, and im really happy to know that im able to cheer you up in some way, so thank you so much!!! ♥♥♥

so, it took me some time to reply to this because as soon as i read your message i was like ‘HELL YEAH i can do this for tianshan’, and i got really excited about it, but when i actually sat down to write i completely blanked out. as i was thinking about this, i realised that i don’t really know what could make them happy, and of course i have a couple of headcanons for that, but it was pretty hard to come up with five things for both of them. in the end this is all i could manage to do, and im not satisfied with it, but i know that if i don’t publish this now i never will (i have to thank @heytian for helping me out with this, though in the end i messed up everything, sigh. also i’d love to know everyone’s opinion on this!!). okay, so…… things that make he tian happy:

i. mo guan shan: predictable, maybe, but that doesn’t make it any less true. they haven’t known each other for long, but guan shan already had a big impact on he tian and his life. he gave he tian a reason to change and to show a softer side of his personality that we weren’t aware of before, and i also think that he made he tian open up more, allowing other people (well, mainly jian yi and zheng xi) to get closer to him. this might be too cheesy, but i do believe that guan shan brought light into he tian’s life, he filled all the empty space in it just by being himself, and at this point is so clear that he tian loves and cares about him so much, i just don’t think there’s anything else that makes he tian as happy as just being with guan shan

ii. basketball: i think that basketball is one of the very few things that he tian enjoys tbh, he always looks very happy and excited when he plays it, which makes sense, because sport can be very liberating in a way, it really helps to free your mind from everything and just focus on what you’re doing in that moment, and it’s also a great way to connect with people, two things that in my opinion he tian really needs

iii. music: we’ve seen he tian with earphones on a lot of times, and i know we don’t really have any confirmation that he actually listens to music (i mean, i often put them on without playing anything just so people won’t talk to me, so), but im just going with it because i think it’s something that fits his character really well. when you are lonely as he tian used to be, you long to fill all the silence and empty space with something, and music is a great way to do that

iv. animals: let’s be real, he tian is a big softie at heart and probably loves all kinds of animals a lot (even if he has a preference for dogs), and i know this is getting repetitive, but pets are great for company and they are a huge help to make you feel better, so i think he tian would be really happy to have one

v. affection: this isn’t probably the right word for what im trying to say, but i didn’t know how to summarise it, and i also don’t know if im going too ooc, but i think he tian really wants to belong, to feel needed and wanted and appreciated, loved, so i can see him being very happy to receive those kind of small gestures that show that someone really cares about him (and by someone i mean guan shan [coughs])

things that make guan shan happy

i. he tian: i know, i know, im biased as hell, but the thing is……..just as guan shan made he tian’s life better, i think that the other way around is true as well. yes, he tian made a lot of mistakes and has a lot to apologise for, but despite his unorthodox methods (which let’s be clear, im not excusing) he succeded in making guan shan understand that he is not alone and that not everyone just wants to use him. he brought life into guan shan’s life too, he brought acceptance and friendship and love, and again, he did not do it in the best way, but he did open guan shan to happiness, and i do believe taht in the future they both will make each other incredibly happy

ii. food: i think that food holds some of guan shan’s happiest memories tbh, from cooking with his dad, to helping his mom grocery shopping, to always eating dinner together, food has probably had a very important role in guan shan’s life since he was a kid, and to this day i feel that doing anything related to it is what makes him feel more at peace

iii. friends and family: well, i don’t really have much to say about this tbh, guan shan just gives me the feeling of being a family man, and he probably never had many friends but i think he is someone who treasures them and is happy to be around them even if most of the time he looks and grumpy and completely #done with their shenanigans (he secretly loves them a lot)

iv. videogames: similarly as basketball for he tian, i think that guan shan finds playing videogames very relaxing, because they are a good way to make yourself focus on something and forget about all your troubles for a while, and even if we’ve never actually seen guan shan playing them, i think that’s something that he could enjoy a lot by offering him an escape from reality and a way to channel all the feelings that he tends to bottle up inside of him and that otherwise would make him explode

v. creating/fixing stuff: this……doesn’t really have any base whatsoever, but i think that, just like with cooking, there’s a lot of satisfaction into taking different things and putting them together in a way that works, and i feel like guan shan would really enjoy that, because it’s something that makes you feel accomplished and proud, and i think that guan shan needs this, needs to know that he can create something special, that he is good enough to do that

it’s August 15th, 2019

work has been good, but terrifyingly busy. my project re: alpha ejection has picked up massive speed. im making mounts and just as fast im running them on the micro CT and spending hours processing and matching on Blob 3D. it’s so fun though. i feel intensely satisfied with my work. I think it is a function of me finally feeling like I KNOW what I’m doing and why I’m doing it that makes me feel so proud.

After a full week with Eric in Denver at the USGS doing pretty uncessful FTIR on garnet and a day at Mines doing some sweet FIB/TEM on mesh garnet I literally haven’t done a thing for that lab. I’ll reach out to Eric to see if I can help lol.

And again, after scrambling to finish up landslides for a ESCO meeting I haven’t done any more work, although I have an assignment. I will go into that lab tomorrow.

I am finally finished with the GRE. I felt awful leaving, with a 154Q 161V, but I got my official scores back which were the same + a 6.0AWA!!!! Not retaking, officially. I feel good enough. Especially since I heard back from USCS, Princeton, and UCR! All positive!!! I’m starting the v fun process of ranking the schools for who I’m even gonna apply to. I should share my spreadsheet, it’s amazing. I still love Emily Cooperdock and still hate LA. Still feeling iffy abt Boulder bc staying feels weird. Still cannot wait for my interview with Davis, I feel like I could be happy there.

I had a minor freak out after my last nutrition appointment, I just don’t know how to take supplements and don’t want to. So I’m not. And the SIBO diet sucks dick. So I’m also not doing that. I had to have an extra therapy appointment. I’m glad I did. That same week I tutored a kid (unsuccessfully) in chem 2, but I did tell him I wasn’t a fuckjng chemistry tutor lol.

Saturday I got my hair dyed back to silver!!!! It’s so pretty I love it I love my silver hair sm. That night was weird tho. Went to the geobio picnik with Toby— best part was holding Ben Johnson’s baby! Weird part was going home with Toby and trying to keep her calm enough to sleep. I ended up giving her some meds and they seemed to help. But like, at the picnik, we pretended to be dating. Ellie was like “Weren’t you already dating” and we yelled “Yes! For months!” And walked away holding hands. She bought me baby’s breath. My favorite flower. That whole thing is a lot.

I’m still ‘dating’ Tiley and don’t wanna be at all. I tried to schedule smthing with them for next weekend but ??? they never responded to my Snapchat asking where we wanted to meet so. maybe they’re finally giving up on me. The worst part is that I’m really lonely and want to be dating a girl who gets me flowers.

Weirdly, my romantic life is a big reason I want to leave Colorado. Fresh start Spencer is best Spencer. Less than a year and I’ll know where I’m gonna be. Yikes!

I asked for letters of rec today for GRFP and grad school and Alexis and Becky and Jim responsed enthusiastically. Waiting to hear back from Lon. He’s my one “academic” reference so I neeeeeed him. Jim is my fave. We had a massive political rant at 9am and he made fun of me for being in the lab after he leaves and before he gets in :’)

Life is pretty good. Pain was bad today for no reason. I love Christie so much, Sue is very kind and helpful. I’m upset to be losing my health insurance so I can’t see them. Oh well. New beginnings and all that. The gym is good, signed up for 24 hour fitness last week and I’ve been pretty consistent about going even when I’m exhausted, which is often. Tia is good but annoying.

I saw Steph and Caitlin last week and they’re both good but I can’t help but feel like I’m not either of their priorities or friend but I know that la just my shit brain. Caitlin and I hung alone yesterday, we’re doing it again Sunday and Thesday. I know she loves me.

My first CSTPR article was published! Already got another one lined up!!!! Also writing GRFP! Fuck!

I keep thinking of new things but overall I’m ok. I’m busy. I’m good. Mostly busy.

Hi! Im just curious, do you think writing fanfics has helped you to improve in writing? Like your fanfics are GOALSSSS so do you think it helped you develop writing skills etc? Also have you ever dabbled in writing original work? What would you say are the pros and cons of writing fanfics vs original work? (I sound like im interrogating you im so sorry but im really interested in what you think abt this!)

Hey there bubs!! (Sorry if this is a little long, I get v excited when people ask me these kinds of questions!) I think I’ve always been writing little short stories here and there pretty much my whole life, but Insanity Love was actually the very first official fan fiction I have ever written. It’s been more than a year since I’ve started it, but I definitely feel like practice is the key; even now, after going on about a six month hiatus from writing, I look back on it and find the writing style a little cringey (OTL). There will always be more to learn and more styles to evolve into and better syntax and flow and you kinda just never stop getting better. Actually sitting down and just spending hours upon hours building worlds and developing characters has definitely helped me understand and appreciate how hard people work to put out the content they do. Even though I personally prefer writing fanfics, I’d definitely be open to starting something from scratch and making my own characters bc ngl, that sounds really fun. Pros of writing fanfics, though, are that you have an easily accessible fan base and that makes it very easy to have people see your work and read it. Also, because it’s fan fiction and you’re dealing with people/characters that readers already like and know intimately, it may be easier on you in building a story. Original work is a little harder to get out, especially when huge platforms like AO3 aren’t really tailored to it. But(!!) it’s definitely worth a try, especially if you find yourself wanting to publish it online; there’s no copyright problems, and you have the chance to win a lot of awards and recognition if you end up entering it in contests like my sister did (she won the Scholastic Regional Gold Key and went on to nationals im so proud of her TT). I’d say some of the only downsides of writing fanfics would be a lot of (well meaning 99.9% of the time) pressure you get with updating and putting out new content. I think the thing that intimidated me the most was seeing all these super successful and talented authors blowing up and getting tons of hits, but please trust me when I say that if you put time and effort into a fic, you will get the recognition you deserve. I hope this helped you bubs, and if you have any more questions pls don’t be scared to hmu ^^^

Persian male cat bites Himalyan’s neck

Dr. Kris, never had this in 30+ yrs experience with cats. I have a Persian n male, 3 yrs old, sweet, easy going, loving to all, even our yappy Yorkie. All are spay/neut. 7 months ago I adopted a 3 month seal PT Himalayan male, recently neutered. Now the male Persian mounts, no other word for it, the Himalayan and his hips do little jerks. Himalayan doesn’t retaliate, just lays there. Sometimes Persian starts by biting, not hard, the Himalayan’s neck. My husband says ” very disturbing” . As long as Elvis isn’t hurt, I leave them. Your Persian is literally now “doing the Elvis”. Hip thrusts and all. It’s sexual behaviour on display. Just like Elvis did in the 50s. Believe it or not, cat’s have a “lust system”.

Ok, ok, ok. So here is what’s happening. Mr. Himalayan arrived on the scene. That’s a relationship change. Relationship changes in groups of cats are all about psychology. It doesnt matter that he’s been around for seven months and just starting the behaviour now. Because it’s all about how they feel and think about their group as time goes by.

If it gets worse, your Persian might need something else to occupy his time. Toy’s, treat ball, more places to climb and hiding spots for Elvis. Of course, Feliway Friends and Zylkene could play a role as well.

But I agree with you – as long as Elvis isn’t hurt, it seems reasonable to leave them.

This all assumes they are successfully neutered and spayed for sure!!! It’s hard to screw up that kind of surgery, so I would be surprised if they were not. Im also assuming there is no vaginitis / lower urinary tract infections going on (which can change behaviour and odours produced by your cats).

P.S. – Your hubby is hilarious!

Tortie constantly wants more food

Hi Dr Kris! I adopted a beautiful tortie girl 5 weeks ago, aged 3.5 years. She is very loving and was previously homed, not a stray. I am feeding her ZiwiPeak wet food 3 times a day (first thing in the morning, when I get home from work and later in the evening before bed). She has a small amount of dry food available but will only eat a few at a time if I encourage her or during the day when she’s alone. In the evenings she seems to constantly want more food, meowing whenever I get up (especially if I go to the kitchen where she is fed, obviously). I’m feeding her as guided on the can, and she often leaves some food from her second meal. I also introduced some poached chicken but she vomited a couple of times while eating that (though this was hours after eating, early in the morning), so I have been holding off giving it to her again to see if she is sick at all without the chicken. She doesn’t jump on the counter and only occasionally begs for food off our plates (we never give her anything), and will typically just watch from afar when I’m preparing human meals. I am able to get her to sit while waiting for meals now.

I get the feeling she isn’t liking being left alone during the day and is trying to make up for it by being needy at night. I give her lots of attention and try to play with her, but she just isn’t really interested in playing much at night until after the third meal. I tried a treat ball but as she doesn’t really like dry food much she isn’t keen on that. My vet suggested feeding her more regularly but that is obviously difficult while at work (she didn’t like the automated feeder I got her), and trying a limited diet if she is vomiting regularly, before any further tests etc. I’m really worried about her, I just want her to be happy in her new home and do the best for her wellbeing. Is it likely she is still just settling in?

Dr. Kris:

Ooohh torties are awesome. I once house sat while working in Vancouver Island, and it was me and this little Tortie watching movies over winter.

Ok, lets talk about food first. Maybe it’s the issue driving her behavior, maybe it isn’t. Because maybe she could just be settling in. That could make one anxious, right? And then, it could be both. Because you have a cat. And they are mentally complex. So the only way you really know is to test things. Like you’ve been doing.

So your cat is a specialized hunter. They are designed to eat 10 to 20 small prey items in a day. Now some are better at this than others. Some are more driven than others. Now imagine a voice in the back of your cats head – an urge to go hunt 20 to 40 times per day. “Let’s go hunting….let’s go stretch our legs, let’s stalk and sprint and pounce….”.

It’s the same frequency that we check our smartphones right? Now imagine your forgot your phone, and you’re stuck at work. It feels weird. You reach into your pocket every 10 minutes, and it’s not there. You can’t satisfy the urge…

We’ve got to activate her brain when she is eating the wet food. Satisfy the voices in the brain.

Start simple, then go more complex.

Test it, then report back. Extra points for considering calming pheromones (like Feliway) or adding Zylkene into their food for a couple of weeks.

Does it work? Great, problem solved. Doesn’t work? You’re the proud owner of a cat. The feeding enrichment now becomes your baseline, and you work up from there to solve the other potential issues driving her behavior.

Test it, and report back to us!

Cat coughs after drinking water

Hello Doctor Kris, I have a 2 year old female cat, she’s generally very healthy but lately almost every time she drinks water the water seems “to go down to wrong way”. She makes noises like she’s coughing up a hairball for around 20-30 seconds and then everything goes back to normal… is this normal? This used to happen occasionally when she would drink from the water fountain, but now it also happens when drinking from a bowl. We had a vet check her today and found nothing wrong

I gave her hairball medicine just in case. She’s using her litter box normally and eating normally as well… sometimes when she eats she will try to expell the food out, like a piece got stuck in her throat or something. It seems water is the main irritant though.

Dr. Kris, I write to you with an update. Since my comment my cat still hacks (I have a video of her doing this, I wish I could send it to you) when she drinks water. There was a day when she did it 2-3 without actually drinking water, so we worried a took her to the vet again. The vet said he heard a noise inside her throat and took xrays, we found out that her heart might be a little bit bigger on one side. We are waiting for another vet who is a specialist to do a ultrasound. I live in Turkey so forgive me if I don’t use medical terms.

When I play with her (I make her chase a ball around the house) she never shows any distress, actually I get tired first. I have played with her this week and nothing has changed in that regard. A couple of months ago the doctor saw redness at the back of the throat and said it was gingivitis, we gave her medicine once and it went away.

We’re still waiting for more results, but if you could tell us what to watch out for I’d appreciate it… thank you! (Lucia)

Hi Lucia, you are on the right track. You were right to be concerned, as cat’s are really good at putting the food and water down the right tube. I would be looking for irritation, inflammation or something affecting the path of food and water from her mouth to her stomach. Sometimes when they hack, it’s actually a cough…it can be tricky to figure out, so make sure to bring the video to the specialist as well.

Assuming she is otherwise ok, main thing that I would be watching for is her body weight. If she’s dropping weight, I want to know and figure out what is going on faster.

Vaccinations for cats – which ones, and for how long?

I recently read some conflicting opinions on the need for certain vaccinations for cats (other than rabies). What is your opinion on how often vaccines should be given and at what age they can be stopped? (Peggy Zamboni)

Good question Peggy.

I promise you I am going somewhere with this.

As a vet, I will meet all sort of people from every walk of life.

And our experiences in life will of course give us the opinions we have, right?

So the biggest positive impact I can make in a person and their cat’s life is to respect their views, and work with them towards their goals. The things that are important to them.

And that is why I resonate with what Bruce said in 1971.

“You must be shapeless, formless, like water. When you pour water in a cup, it becomes the cup. When you pour water in a bottle, it becomes the bottle”. When you pour water in a teapot, it becomes the teapot”.

Someone really believes what Jenny McCarthy says about vaccines? It’s ok. We are all susceptible to the larger than life opinions of celebrities at some time or another.

Someone has had a bad experience with vaccines in the past and is concerned about how a new kitty in their life might react? Very reasonable way to feel, isn’t it?

Someone had had a pet or family member pass away or get really sick from infectious disease? We talk about the role of vaccines in preventing that.

So, I need to be formless, and bend to that person’s situation, their history with vaccination, and how they feel about this medical procedure (a vaccine is technically a medical procedure, with pro’s and con’s like every other medical procedure).

Bad diseases can drip, or they can crash. So can reactions to medical procedures, like vaccination.

So, for me, it’s a case by case evaluation. Not one size fits all. I definitely tell them about legal obligations if their cat is interacting with the public (i.e. rabies vaccination), and will form my opinion based on the age, behavior, medical status and exposure to the illnesses we vaccinate for.

I’ll tell people if I’m strongly for vaccination for their cat or kitten, or if I feel it’s much lower on the priority list to optimize the health of their cat. I always want the big health bang for the buck.

And the last thing I tell people about vaccination is that nothing that we decide is written in stone. We can always re-evaluate any plan.

Cat is overgrooming

I have 7 indoor cats; healthy, get along for most part, and use the litter box. I have a pair of orange and white, 7 yr old sisters that do slightly bully the others. One sister, Libby, is licking off her fur and it seems to be getting worse. First it was just on her tummy, then the underside of her tail, and now one of her arms. Is there anything I can do to help this? (Sheila Tabone)

Dr. Kris:

Yes.

Assuming that Libby has no thyroid issues, acquired allergy or food sensitivity, parasitic or other physical health issues (hint hint take her to the vet), then you might be looking for ways to help her with social stress and anxiety.

There is lot’s of info about that if you google it.

But here is the trick.

I used to work with fish. Big, large rainbow trout, way back in the 90’s. Part of my research was looking into social stress. Sometimes fish would bully each other as well. And you know what we knew to be true? That the fish that was the bullier, was sometimes just as stressed out (physiologically speaking) as the fish that got bullied.

And things could get better when we modified stuff about the fish tank, just as much about doing anything with the individual fish. The tank was what we needed to treat (for science geeks out there, the tank was the experimental unit, not the individual fish).

Your home is the tank. Help Libby as an individual, but also realize that true success comes from making changes for all the cats.

Now why do vets always say check them out in the clinic first, even though you have a strong hunch it may be a behavioral / anxiety problem?

Three reasons.

First, lets say it is purely a social stress and anxiety problem. Well, that’s an immunosuppressive force hitting your cat. Chronic stress is a driver for physical illness. And unless you catch that, it’s hard to make them healthy in the way you intended.

Secondly, some of these guys need supplements or medication.

Lastly, it always sucks when you have all the right techniques in place to deal with the social anxiety and stress, and the undetected medical illness makes it look like nothing is working…your cat has concurrent issues and all your efforts become confounded.

Cat is peeing on the bed

I have a 10yr old cat that seems to have taken up not urinating in kitty litter trays even though they are clean. How can I stop this behavior. He is always urinating on their bed I changed the mattress but that has not helped he is doing the same thing to the new mattress. Is there something I can spray on the mattress to put him off using it. Is there anything that is chemical free that i can use? Thanks. (Gladys Gauci)

Kitten has seizures

Hello Dr. Kris! I’d be ever grateful if you could help me with my question. Six months ago I rescued an 8 week old kitten from a gas station parking lot. She has been having a grand Mal seizure occasionally, the first on Nov. 24th, then one 6 weeks later, and a less severe seizure last week. When I brought her home she was seen by a vet and de-wormed. Her stool has been mostly loose and very smelly since being wormed. The same vet saw her after the first seizure and ran tests which were normal. He thought maybe she was getting too much fat in her diet so recommended low fat canned food but she’s since had the other two seizures. I found a blog that suggested grain and gluten in her canned food could be causing intestinal inflammation and her seizures, so recommended changing foods and supplementing with natural healthy omega fats. Since she was a stray it’s unknown if she had head teams but didn’t seem to have a head injury when found. Have you experienced the seizure reaction in cats due to grains and gluten in their food? I’ve since switched all my cats to grain-free, gluten-free and carrageenan-free food and have made coconut oil available for my cats to nibble at their option. The kitten’s stool seems improved already. I am very concerned to stop the root cause of her seizures because I also read that the more seizures she has, the more likely she will be to have them in the future. I live by two seizure rules.

I don’t like seeing them very early in life, and they are rarely good news if they begin very late in life.

You are really an awesome person for intervening for this little life you found in the concrete jungle of a gas station.

You are doing an amazing job focusing on nutrition. It’s the foundation of good health and trying to get them to return to health. To answer your question, I have not observed seizures in kittens due to grains and gluten in their food.

When seizures start this young, then I think about Congenital anomaly’s (things they are born with that affect their nervous system), encephalitis (things that cause inflammation in the brain – not food based though), FIP, Toxoplasma, Cryptococcus (I use to see that a lot on the west coast) and toxicity. There are probably other reasons, and a talented veterinary neurologist could help.

You are right. Find out the root cause if you can. It’s not inexpensive to do that. Do the best you can.
