been trying to draft a post about the blatant anticapitalist* messaging in sweeney todd like its time period being moved up to the height of industrialization the set frequently being made to resemble a factory sweeney's whole entire fucking monologue in "We All Deserve To Die" being about how powerful people get to just ruin people's lives on a whim and theres nothing at all they can do about it save for hopeless violence the complete dehumanization of lucy johanna and toby literally being mined for parts and discarded (hair, sex, teeth, labor) to the point where their own families no longer recognize them as human the cannibalism being a moneymaking scheme and also a metaphor so blatant it's not even subtext it's just text and sweeney's revenge being not rational, no, but clearly caused by the power structures he lives within the way sweeney's death is not a victory and neither is turpin's because they are both villainous but they are not the villain, the actual enemy is the system that produces them and just killing its most obvious outgrowths will not stop the machine from grinding out endless misery but what can you even say it's all right there. just listen to the factory whistle

Ahshhshdhdhdba few weeks ago I was fighting (silly and illogical) feelings of being a lil bummed bc a guy I was friends with and had a huge crush on in highschool recently had a kid with his ~perfect petite super feminine good Catholic~ wife and like. I haven't been in highschool for a decade. This is fine. I know it's silly to be even slightly upset and I'm much happier with the person I am now than who I was then and you couldn't PAY me enough to go back to that.

I'd love to hear more of your thoughts on the more mature version of Scooby doo

i am of the vested opinion that a lot of the mature takes we've seen are more about the place of scooby doo in culture, and not actually all that invested in the characters and premise of scooby doo. from velma to the live action movies to mystery incorporated (if i recall correctly mi's showrunner has admitted on record he does not give a shit about scooby doo), there is no care in who the gang are as people within a fictional setting, as vectors for worthy storytelling in them of themselves. i think it's perhaps why the venture bros. parody of scooby doo, with the members being pastiches of american killers, works more for me because it has something broader to say about american fiction and storytelling, as most of that series does.

this is all one long preamble to say that i would merely continue my sincere investment in the characters and add in a dash of realism. the original show already takes place in the 70s-- which already raises an interesting question about why a character like shaggy is still a beatnik in-universe 20 years out of the 50s, as one example.

to delve a bit further -- i need to update my old designs for them, but i'd make the gang multicultural and of various identities as one way to introduce conflict rather easily. how would daphne move through the world as a black trans woman, for instance? how would fred, being an adoptee with a father in prison (taking influence from be cool and mystery inc here)? these are simply springboards for discussion-- but most importantly they are borne from an interest in the gang as complete characters worthy of introspection, whose stories are worthy of development as they are, rather than as means to satirize the innocence of childhood and the media associated with it. scooby doo as a franchise is well over 50 years old; it genuinely boggles me how we have of yet to see someone simply say "i genuinely like these characters; what would happen if i took them seriously?"

i hate the phrase “protestant work ethic.” what is uniquely protestant christian about gaining worth through work? how is a protestant (a category which encompasses everything from the amish to anglicans; “protestantism” is literally any western christian denomination that isn’t roman catholic) more disposed to hard work than a catholic, or a muslim, or a jewish person? by “protestant,” do you really mean to say “american”? how about “capitalist”? why don’t you say this instead? it’s a dumb phrase.

Sorry, but while I appreciate asks, lately they're genuinely too broad. I don't want to continuously think of the 30 or so students plus faculty to get an answer to an anon.

That said, on multiple times I've drawn Dimitri with cat ears/tail and I have the Ferdinyand AU+an emote on discord for him with cat ears. I also have drawn those two on my (now inactive) art blog with dog ears.

(That's all I got for this and I might not answer more huge asks like this openly. If I get non-anon I can at least answer privately and not clutter my blog.)

currently thinking that perhaps Gaster is not a skeleton, but a closely related type of monster

Perhaps risking hitting a hornet’s nest by tossing out this post but like I care a negative amount about whatever personal backstory an artist puts into writing a song. like sometimes it’s fun but it feels beside the point to me in some ways. for me I hear Speak Now as this album that is about the mythology of girlhood and the stories that girls tell each other—but more importantly themselves—to survive it. any other theme or autobiography that surfaces is secondary to that.

#and maybe some part of it is because widely speaking #culture can’t comprehend women and girl artists making art about broad reaching ideas and topics #so culture reduces it strictly to personal experience. women and girls only ever write songs about specific personal experiences #whereas bob and bruce can tell any story with any pov and get called a genius #but taylor and beyonce and olivia and britney (and now phoebe to a certain extent) put out a song #and the red string comes out to find out who it’s about now #(actually maybe perhaps beyonce has transcended this with renaissance now. idk.)#the point is i want to know less about the personal life of every songwriter I like
