I swear I have read your big post regarding Peter Parker's neurodivergence and why it is best to avoid labelling him, but he definitely has a weird brain
Can't find it and feel kinda sad about it cuz I deeply related to it
i know exactly which post you're talking about and i can't find it either! i've raked through my archive, and it's just - nowhere to be seen. i think tumblr eated it (it happens.)
really, tumblr's search functionality is so so useless, i don't know what to tell you. there are plenty of keywords i can search to find it that post, but the search functionality actually just does not work!
undiagnosed audhd-addled peter parker, my darling, my light, my life, my everything.
i think peter parker's such an interesting creature to write, because a lot of people will point to a certain behaviour about him and say "this is an autistic thing, right?" but a lot of those behaviours are actually, in my head, tied to certain traumas in peter's life too.
people say "oh, the food thing, peter's a picky eater because he's autistic" and yes, absolutely. but also it's tied to his trauma with his parents.
Tumblr media
peter gets overstimulated, and yes, it's an autism thing, but also he was bitten by a radioactive spider and his senses are dialled to 11.
Tumblr media
it's a similar case i've found for myself, too – where a lot of friends i have kind of diagnose me because i have autistic traits, but actually - i'm hesitant to claim the label or pursue diagnosis because, actually, i know where these certain behaviours come from, and they come from certain traumas. there are events i can pinpoint in my life and say "yep. that's where this behaviour comes from."
so - i think there's a lot of overlap between trauma and autistic traits. the brain is very complex! i think the reason for that overlap is maybe as simple as the fact that people with autism and people with trauma are both doing the same thing - developing behaviours to protect themselves or soothe themselves. so - i think it's nice to be able to see a character like peter parker, who may or may not be autistic, but recognise behaviours in him and see yourself in him.
people who go undiagnosed for whatever reason - people who are really good at masking - so good, in fact, that they have no idea they might be on the spectrum - everyone and anyone at all can look at peter parker and recognise themselves. because i think we discredit the thought that every single brain does the same thing! develops certain behaviours in order to survive. every brain has that same software - we've just all been faced with different hardships that we need to overcome, and that's were all the differences come in.
autism is a spectrum, i guess - everyone falls into it to some degree. and i think events in your life probably push you along on it. but i don't know, i didn't study brain science. probably what i'm saying is very stupid and uninformed. of course there's brain chemistry involved. but i know people in my life living with autism and certain events in their life have exacerbated certain behaviours or made coping with it a lot more difficult. so maybe trauma is a catalyst.
#a lot of my traits have been exacerbated lately and i remember it was much easier for me before#and some of my friends have said “oh it's because you've been masking too long and now you're facing autistic burnout.”#and that made sense to me i think.#but then i found out about the stress thing. me overproducing stress hormone. and that's a very physical thing.#and that explains why i've been overstimulated more than usual lately. and why everything feels like too much.#and i wonder how many of these traits of mine are going to subside once i have lamar removed#and it makes me wonder a lot of things. and it's so weird how much your brain is tied to your biology.#i wonder how much i'll change. i wonder how i'll feel. i wonder if i'll still feel like me. i wonder how much me is me right now.#and how much of me is being altered by weird freaky hormones. who am i?? who will i be??#i'm almost looking at this as like. a superhero origin story of some sort. like this is my spider-bite moment. maybe.#will i be different? will i cope with things differently?? now that my body isn't fighting something anymore??#maybe i'll be normal. i don't know. i don't know.#i don't know what it'll mean for me.#but all of these things mean i relate to peter parker in a certain kind of way#i don't think you have to be diagnosed with autism to recognise and empathise with those traits i think#i think everyone can see themselves in peter. and i think that's the benefit of having characters that aren't diagnosed.#because there's so much overlap in the human experience. and certain feelings aren't exclusive to just one group of people.#peter has such a rich identity actually. it's an autistic thing. it's a queer thing. it's a jewish thing. it's a trauma thing.#there are so many overlapping parts of peter's identity that inform who he is and how he behaves and it's never just one thing.#it's a product of all of his things.#just like me! just like everyone.#so me? i guess i can be a million things. you can explain what i am in a million different ways.#a hundred different psychologists can all come up with different ways to explain why i be the way i be.#i don't think it's something that can be simplified.#sorry wow. i'm really going off here in the tags.#i hope people don't think i'm stupid. i don't know brain science. i'm just philosophising as usual.#sci speaks

What the fuck are the Trials
Since the show is based on the books and not the games, and more people are more familiar with the games that the books, I thought it might be helpful to sort of officialize the posts I’ve done about specific topics in the books.
Here are the previous posts on Triss&Geralt as well as Coën
TLDR: So looking at this process, according to the books the way a Witcher becomes, well a Witcher looks like this:
There is the Choice which is the decision to become a Witcher made when you are a child
Eat a lot of magic mushrooms that give you the strength and ability Witchers are known for
Then the Trial of the Grasses which is a concoction of mutagenic elixirs injected into the bloodstream which mutates you into a Witcher
Then finally there are the Changes. This is a big step and one that requires a mage. This is when the hormones are changed and a Witcher becomes permanently sterile
then there is training until you earn your medallion and BOOM, out onto the path with you
Now, have a post about what the trials are as far as the books are concerned
It’s important to note that in the books, The Witcher are a dying breed so the Trials are really only mentioned in Blood of Elves when Ciri trains with the Witchers and the two prequels, Sword of Destiny and The Last Wish.
Let’s start out with the basics of the Trials, here is a passage from Blood of Elves where Triss is wondering why the Witchers at Kaer Morhen are being so secretive in regards to Ciri:
“It’s obvious. They want to mutate the child, subject her to the Trial of Grasses and Changes, but they don’t know how to do it. Vesemir was the only witcher left from the previous generation, and he was only a fencing instructor. The Laboratorium, hidden in the vaults of Kaer Morhen, with its dusty demi-johns of elixirs, the alembics, ovens and retorts…
None of the witchers knew how to use them. The mutagenic elixirs had been concocted by some renegade wizard in the distant past and then perfected over the years by the wizard’s successors, who had, over the years, magically controlled the process of Changes to which children were subjected. And at a vital moment the chain had snapped.
There was no more magical knowledge or power. The witchers had the herbs and Grasses, they had the Laboratorium. They knew the recipe. But they had no wizard.”
Later:
“And now they want to mutate the girl but can’t. And that might mean… They may ask me to help. And then I’ll see something no living wizard has seen, I’ll learn something no living wizard has learned. Their famous Grasses and herbs, the secret virus cultures, the renowned, mysterious recipes…”
Now, what Triss doesn’t realize is that Geralt and the others are not planning on subjecting Ciri to the trials at all but are instead trying to hide Ciri’s magical ability from Triss. They are worried she will report them to the Chapter.
Of course, until they tell Triss this, she is deeply suspicious and goes on to talk about the mushrooms Witchers have access to which are extremely unique.
“Of course, thought Triss. They’re feeding her those legendary cave saprophytes – a mountain plant unknown to science – giving her the famous infusions of their mysterious herbs to drink. The girl is developing quickly, is acquiring a witcher’s infernal fitness. Naturally, without the mutation, without the risk, without the hormonal upheaval. But the magician must not know this. It is to be kept a secret from the magician. They aren’t going to tell me anything; they aren’t going to show me anything.”
Later:
“I don’t give a fig for your trust, witchers. There’s cancer out there in the world, smallpox, tetanus and leukaemia, there are allergies, there’s cot death. And you’re keeping your “mushrooms”, which could perhaps be distilled and turned into life-saving medicines, hidden away from the world. You’re keeping them a secret even from me, and others to whom you declare your friendship, respect and trust. Even I’m forbidden to see not just the Laboratorium, but even the bloody mushrooms!”
Triss as a mage has extreme bias against the Trials and for good reason! Most of the populace doesn’t have access to any information on the Trials outside of vague ideas but Mages have access to first hand accounts such as this from Blood of Elves:
“On the third day all the children died save one, a male barely ten. Hitherto agitated by a sudden madness, he fell all at once into deep stupor. His eyes took on a glassy gaze; incessantly with his hands did he clutch at clothing, or brandish them in the air as if desirous of catching a quill. His breathing grew loud and hoarse; sweat cold, clammy and malodorous appeared on his skin. Then was he once more given elixir through the vein and the seizure it did return. This time a nose-bleed did ensue, coughing turned to vomiting, after which the male weakened entirely and became inert.
For two days more did symptoms not subside. The child’s skin, hitherto drenched in sweat, grew dry and hot, the pulse ceased to be full and firm – albeit remaining of average strength, slow rather than fast. No more did he wake, nor did he scream.
Finally, came the seventh day. The male awoke and opened his eyes, and his eyes were as those of a viper…”
~Carla Demetia Crest, The Trial of Grasses and other secret Witcher practices, seen with my own eyes, manuscript exclusively accessible to the Chapter of Wizards
When most people think of the Trials, they are thinking similarly to Queen Calanthe in Sword of Destiny.
Here is what Calanthe says to Geralt when talking about what he might do with his child surprise:
“You are astonished,’ she stated. ‘Well, I’ve studied a little. Since Pavetta’s child has the chance of becoming a witcher, I went to great pains. My sources, Geralt, reveal nothing, however, regarding how many children in ten withstand the Trial of the Grasses. Would you like to satisfy my curiosity in this regard?’
‘O Queen,’ Geralt said, clearing his throat. ‘You certainly went to sufficient pains in your studies to know that the code and my oath forbid me from even uttering that name, much less discussing it.’
Calanthe stopped the swing abruptly by jabbing a heel into the ground. ‘Three, at most four in ten,’ she said, nodding her head in feigned pensiveness.
‘A stringent selection, very stringent, I’d say, and at every stage. First the Choice and then the Trials. And then the Changes. How many youngsters ultimately receive medallions and silver swords? One in ten? One in twenty?”
Later Calanthe asks Geralt:
“Do you believe a Child of Destiny would pass through the Trials without danger?’
‘We believe such a child would not require the Trials.’
‘One question, Geralt. Quite a personal one. May I?’
He nodded.
‘There is no better way to pass on hereditary traits than the natural way, as we know. You went through the Trials and survived. So if you need a child with special qualities and endurance… Why don’t you find a woman who… I’m tactless, aren’t I? But I think I’ve guessed, haven’t I?’
‘As usual,’ he said, smiling sadly, ‘you are correct in your deductions, Calanthe. You guessed right, of course. What you’re suggesting is impossible for me.’
‘Forgive me,’ she said, and the smile vanished from her face. ‘Oh, well, it’s a human thing.’
‘It isn’t human.’
‘Ah… So, no witcher can—’
‘No, none. The Trial of the Grasses, Calanthe, is dreadful. And what is done to boys during the time of the Changes is even worse. And irreversible.”
Later:
“The risks are too great,’ Geralt said quickly. ‘As you said. At most, four out of ten survive.’
‘Dammit, is only the Trial of the Grasses hazardous? Do only potential witchers take risks? Life is full of hazards, selection also occurs in life, Geralt. Misfortune, sicknesses and wars also select. Defying destiny may be just as hazardous as succumbing to it. Geralt… I would give you the child. But… I’m afraid, too.’
Then in The Last Wish, Geralt describes his own experiences with The Trials:
“Kaer Morhen…That's where the likes of me were produced. It's not done anymore; no one lives in Kaer Morhen now. No one but Vesemir. Who's Vesemir? My father. Why are you so surprised? What's so strange about it? Everyone's got a father, and mine is Vesemir. And so what if he's not my real father? I didn't know him, or my mother. I don't even know if they're still alive, and I don't much care.
“Yes, Kaer Morhen. I underwent the usual mutation there, through the Trial of Grasses, and then hormones, herbs, viral infections. And then through them all again. And again, to the bitter end. Apparently, I took the changes unusually well; I was only ill briefly. I was considered to be an exceptionally resilient brat…and was chosen for more complicated experiments as a result. They were worse. Much worse. But, as you see, I survived. The only one to live out of all those chosen for further trials. My hair's been white ever since. Total loss of pigmentation. A side effect, as they say. A trifle.
“Then they taught me various things until the day when I left Kaer Morhen and took to the road. I’d earned my medallion, the Sign of the Wolf's School. I had two swords: silver and iron, and my conviction, enthusiasm, incentive and…faith. Faith that I was needed in a world full of monsters and beasts, to protect the innocent. As I left Kaer Morhen, I dreamed of meeting my first monster. I couldn't wait to stand eye to eye with him. And the moment arrived.”
So looking at this process, according to the books the way a Witcher becomes, well a Witcher looks like this:
There is the Choice which is the decision to become a Witcher made when you are a child
Eat a lot of magic mushrooms that give you the strength and ability Witchers are known for
Then the Trial of the Grasses which is a concoction of mutagenic elixirs injected into the bloodstream which mutates you into a Witcher
Then finally there are the Changes. This is a big step and one that requires a mage. This is when the hormones are changed and a Witcher becomes permanently sterile
then there is training until you earn your medallion and BOOM, out onto the path with you
This is why it’s such a big deal that Triss was brought to Kaer Morhen. Without a mage, someone cannot become a full Witcher and Triss believed that was why she was there. Of course, this wasn’t true but it’s a valid concern to have.
One thing I want to note, there is absolutely NOTHING in the text that says that being a Witcher is limited to any sort of gender boundary. The fact that Triss so readily jumped to Ciri becoming a Witcher and the fact that Geralt didn’t specify  boys until he was talking about the sterilization process...well, there is a likelihood female Witchers actually existed.
Again, in the books Witchers are a dying breed and you can literally count on one hand the number of Witchers we meet. Of course, considering mages are the ones who made Witchers, it makes sense that female Witchers are either strongly discouraged, banned or simply not talked about.
One big point Triss has against Ciri’s training is that she won’t “develop” correctly like a woman “should” due to the mushrooms and harsh training and considering how so many northern mages place importance on beauty I could definitely see mages not wanting to have female Witchers, considering it a “perversion”.
Just a fun thought I often have about the books that I haven’t seen anyone point out.
So overall, here is what the books have to say about the Trials, it’s a touch different from the games but I find this very fascinating and interesting. Let me know if you want me to do a specific topic or relationship next, but for now, thanks for reading!

Number 17 on the list, please! Obviously carolight;)
Hi friend! 💓 I hope you like this! It’s a lot longer than I intended I hope that’s okay!! Also I didn’t have time to proofread it because I’m heading out for dinner with my parents in like 7 seconds so I’m sorry for any mistakes!
~~~~~~~~~~~
Dr. Dwight Enys arrives home just as Caroline and Horace were finishing supper. It had been a particularly stressful week: a rather vicious cough was making its way through the district- affecting old and young alike and not a cure in sight; not to mention the steady decline of his friend Hugh’s health, which worried him greatly- for if Hugh was gone who would he talk of his nightmares with? Dwight is, understandably, utterly exhausted. The sight of his wife’s face still manages to bring life back into his tired eyes as a warm smile forms on his face. He approaches where she is sitting, leans down for a kiss and she presents her cheek. He kisses it softly, thinking nothing of the action. “My love.”
“Hello,” she acknowledges. “I asked Mrs. Bird to save you some potato pie, your favourite.”
Dwight moves to the small table to pour himself a glass of port. “Ah, that is kind, but I am not hungry.” If he had been facing her at that moment he would have noticed that a flush of fury came across Caroline’s face. “How are you, my love?” he asks, wondering particularly if her morning sickness had subsided. His back was still to her as he poured himself another glass, knocking it back quickly, attempting to drown out the worries of his working week.
“Oh, how interesting, Dr. Enys.” Dwight’s blood cools- Caroline’s sarcastic tone coupled with the use of his professional name meant only one thing: Dwight was in serious trouble. For what, though, he could not say. “I did not suppose you cared for my wellbeing any longer. For it seems you’ve certainly no care for your own!”
He desperately longs to roll his eyes but instead thinks it wise to fix them lovingly on his wife. It was true that he had skipped supper four times this week, mostly surviving the days on a hearty breakfast, but it was not something he was unaccustomed to. He could not understand her worry, nor indeed her apparent anger, over the matter. “Are you upset with me, my love? I assure you I am in near perfect health. I admit to feeling rather tired but you needn’t worry, I am used to such long days.” He smiles slightly before yawning widely.
She rises to her feet, slamming her hands against the table, causing Dwight to recoil slightly. “I too am used to long days - days without you. Had I any idea you were so eager to repeat such days perhaps I’d have saved the admiralty my constant petitioning to bring you home!” She launches her napkin onto the dining table - where it knocks over a vase, spilling newly picked flowers over the tablecloth - and stalks out of the room, hot angry tears spilling from her eyes. Once she reaches the middle of the stairs, her tears turning to guilt and shame at having been so harsh. She knew her anger was in part due to the small human growing inside of her, who seemed to zap half of her energy while supplying double the emotion. She had a mind to go apologise immediately but thought better of it- perhaps what he needed was harsh words.
A quarter of an hour later, Dwight dares to enter their bedroom. His head is bowed and his hands are behind his back; she quickly glances at him as he enters, amused.
He sits beside her on the bed. “My love, I am sorry for not being more present recently. You see there is a rather troublesome cough affecting a large portion of the county. I’ve prescribed fifty different potions and none seem to be making any noticeable improvement,” he sighs tiredly.
Caroline strokes a stray piece of hair out of his face and cups his cheek. “Why did you not tell me of this?”
He smiles sheepishly. “I did not wish to trouble you.”
Her eyes roll into her head and she huffs dramatically. “Dwight, I am not some delicate flower incapable of coping with troublesome news!”
“You are in a delicate condition, though.” He pulls her shift up and places a hand on her small swell.
She raises her eyebrows coyly. “And whose doing is that?”
A grin flashes across his face. “Mine,” he states proudly, kissing her, sinking them both into the bed.
She shoves him playfully away. “Exactly. I think such a culprit should be brought to trial.”
He edges closer to her and props his elbow on his pillow, his eyes alight with mirth. “And what is my sentence to be?”
She considers this thoughtfully for a moment before saying: “You must stay home tomorrow,” she holds a hand up as he is about to interject, “yes, I know many people are sick. You are permitted to attend on those who come to Killewarren for assistance, and attend on house visits where necessary,” she emphasises necessary, “but I - we - should like your attention for a day.”
He considers this reluctantly but recalls his inability to provide a cure. Perhaps a thorough read through of his medical journals abed with the strawberry bonbons he had bought yesterday would be good for everyone. “Very well.”
She peers around the room thoughtfully. “My love, have you a calendar? I wish to mark the occasion on which Dr. Enys has chosen his wife in place of his patients!”
He nudges her shoulder gently. “Very funny,” he remarks sarcastically, a trait of hers which had steadily been working its way into his personality.
“Yes. My taste in humour is second only to my taste in men. Now, come and kiss me,” she mocks crossly.
Dwight obliges eagerly, taking her in his arms with remarkable vigour for a man so exhausted he could not keep his eyes open thirty minutes ago.
Gotta be blunt here:
I’m logical-minded.
No, this does not make me ‘super smart’ or ‘above you’ or anything stupid like that.  It means that I make decisions based on what I believe is the objectively smart thing to do based on the information that has been presented to me or acquired by myself.  I will forego food for a goal, I will appease the people around me so they don’t trigger my many, many issues.
I’ve decided to work through those issues.
I’ve decided it’s not healthy to latch onto people who would hinder that.
I’ve decided that I’m going to work on myself and figure out how to interact with the world around me.
You may not like it.  Most people, in fact, don’t.  My mother is very emotionally driven.  This does not mean she ‘follows her heart’ or that she’s ‘overly dramatic’, both of which she’s been accused of.  It means she makes decisions based on what is emotionally the best thing to do.  She will protect her children from potential threats, she will shout when she’s mad and cry when she’s sad.  She is emotionally driven.
She doesn’t like how I do things sometimes, I don’t like how she does things sometimes.  I need to ‘understand how she feels’ and ‘loosen up’.  She needs to ‘see the bigger picture’ and ‘just think about this for a second’.  These are arguments we use against each other.
Thing is that most of the world is emotionally-driven.  That’s how most people communicate.  That’s how most people work their way through the world.  That’s how most people get jobs and meet people and do normal person stuff.
Not me.  I don’t play by those rules.  And yeah, my life is different because of it.
I’m uptight.  I’m annoying.  I’m ‘goody-goody’ in some points and a ‘stickler’ in others.  I’m ‘heartless’ and ‘cold’.  And that’s how most people see me once they realize how I interact with the world.
So, yeah.  I’m going to ask things like ‘why’ and ‘why don’t you try this instead’.  Is it because I hate you and want you to fail?  Hell no.  It’s because I want you to succeed and can’t understand why you’re doing it the way you’re doing it.  It’s because all I see is screaming and kicking and no one is taking the lead and proving themselves and their cause as something worth diligent thought.  All I see is a mosh pit of anger, and anger subsides.  Feelings change and emotions fade.  Debates last.  Points last.  Logic does last.  And so does some emotion when it’s got a good foundation.
People were enslaved and treated below the standard of living in several ways.  No rights to marry.  No rights to their children.  No rights to work, food, or sleep.  These are logical points and fucking disgusting.  Slavery was shit.  People were angry, people were killed, and several revolts later and people taking the fucking lead, slavery was eventually abolished in US (after far, far, faaar too long).
And then there was fucking segregation.  No equal rights.  Couldn’t sit on a bus where you wanted to.  No equal access to water.  Education was a joke.  Laws to keep people from marrying inter racially and more.  But someone ‘Had a Dream’ where this was no longer so.  In this speech, charged by emotional fervor, he listed his points.  He made a logical speech that was charged with emotion that made people fucking care.  I respect the hell outta it.  I respect that movement.  I respect that people got together, made points, made some waves, did some pointed actions, and made some actual progress.
Now what we’ve got is stupid-ass prejudices that do no fucking good.  When I was a child, it was a black man who protected my brother and I from bullies of literally all colors, and only a white one ever dared to give me a black eye and only a white one ever tried to choke me out.  That black man was the vice principle.  When I was a kid, there was a white teacher who sat with me while I had a meltdown over not getting math and there was a black teacher who sat there patiently while I couldn’t figure out how to draw a Christmas tree and gritting my teeth and getting really angry.  Both of them were fan-fucking-tastic.  When I got to high school, our school had the biggest, most disciplined band in the entire city.  They were our pride.  And yes, they were led by a big fucking black man.  He was a big ass black man who could have probably made an excellent ninja and he was at once the sternest band director and one of the friendliest guys you’ll ever meet.  My therapist is a black lady who had to hear me spill my guts about this whole thing earlier this week.
To me, there are good people in every shade.  I’ve got hero stories about Mexicans, too, because they’re awesome.  I’ve got stories of when I’ve fucked up so bad that I actually did have to cry for forgiveness.
But this isn’t one of them.
Stereotypes of that sort were fiction to me because that’s where they belonged:  fiction.  I was of the sort that I had actual real-life models of what good people looked like, and they looked like a lot of people.  So I didn’t get the anger until it was explained to me.  And I won’t apologize for looking for a logical reason.  I won’t apologize for trying to use my brain and wondering why people would just scream when, instead, they could use those amazing explanations that I had to wrench outta some people because they didn’t think explaining things meant anything and talk to people in charge.  I won’t apologize for grieving over what I saw to be your lost shot to make a difference about this.
You guys can be really logical when you want to be.  Most of you are emotionally driven and I probably hurt your feelings.  But your feelings come and go.  So do mine, albeit sometimes a bit easier and more quickly.  Sometimes they last a really long time that feels like forever.  But your emotions are not the end-all to a discussion.
Having a dream that puts little black boys and girls in the same well-stocked and funded classroom as little white boys and girls is.
Demanding equal rights in a specific point-by-point basis is.
And yes, there are idiots out there who try to use ‘logic’ as a deterrent.  I can’t do anything about those fuckwads.  All I know is they’re not there to learn and I’m sick of their mistakes costing me.
I do not get your emotions easily.  I do not understand as easily as others around you might.  They are emotionally-driven.  I am not.
I understand achievement in the face of adversity.
I understand progress and movement.
I do not understand standing and shouting so loudly that no one can hear a single voice among the crowd.
Unfollow me if this is discomforting.
Unfollow me if you think this makes me racist.
Unfollow me if this is something you can’t live with.
Because me being me makes people uncomfortable.  But I can’t be a sounding board and maintain my sanity any longer.
I like to listen to you guys and I’d like to try to understand your emotions.  But you can’t shout another apology out of me.  I’m done apologizing for who I am.  I’m done apologizing for trying to cover a trait of mine that is very real.
I’m done.
If you leave, I won’t blame you.  If you want me to unfollow you, I’ll do that, too.  But I’m done being shouted outta asking questions when I don’t understand something.  Because unlike you, who get it instantly, I do need the stupidest crap explained to me.
It means I’m a logical person and emotional solutions are something I don’t pick up easily.  Not when there’s a logical solution I can see and offer to try.
This has been an Amy announcement.
Bitcoin Q&A: Enterprise "blockchain" gentrification?
Bitcoin Q&A: Enterprise "blockchain" gentrification?
Tumblr media
Hi, i am just wondering… Shall we say that 5% of the total population get out of their relief zone… They usually transfer to cryptocurrencies. When do you consider that this gentrification will come, mainstream person friendliness? Group be then? Will say, "that is gentrified, i’m too ? It’s already happening. At the second, it’s mainly matters that persons call… "blockchain" , "company blockchain," "blockchain" proof-of-inspiration, "blockchain alliance," and projects utilizing blockchain to do blockchain blockchain blockchain… And yes, this is Consensus "Blockchain Week" in the big apple. I need to have forgotten to go there. I came right here rather. They will say that phrase quite a bit. Gentrification is already going down, the makes an attempt to wrap all of this in a sanitized corporate atmosphere.The awesome thing about it is, that doesn’t do away with the core ideas and values anymore. They’ve built their possess little neighborhood and it’s boring. They’re doing their possess little thing. The consultants are making great money The humorous factor is, I estimated this in 2013. I advised that they (banks, gigantic software corporations) would start blockchain tasks funding. With this funding, they’d instruct program builders to work on "blockchain" . How will they teach program builders to work on "blockchain" ? They might purchase my booklet, or do some publications online, and finding out from the existing Bitcoin code base.They will to copy existing code, learn about cryptography fundamentals and elliptic curve . They’re going to learn about private-public key , hash algorithms, and consensus algorithms. They are going to be taught about proof-of-work. So, , these developers will discover Bitcoin . Persons concept that used to be a humorous . How would they probably do it ? Then I went to a convention in Singapore. Vitalik Buterin and i had been each doing shows for the meetup. A younger child in his early 20s came to me and stated, "Mr.Antonopoulos, i’ve been staring at your videos." "i have been in the blockchain house for a 12 months and a 1/2. A few months ago, I discovered Bitcoin." , "What? How will you be within the blockchain house for a year and a half of, however best notice Bitcoin in the last two months?" He said, "I went to a financial institution of america presentation." "A advisor pointed out this new science called ‘blockchain,’ Hyperledger and Ripple." "They pointed out ‘dispensed ledger technology,’ federated ledgers, proof-of-authority, proof-of-stake." "All of that. They didn’t say the word ‘Bitcoin’ as soon as. It wasn’t on the slides." "Then I was once hired, received involved in a challenge, started working with Hyperledger, and studying ." "however whenever i might seek for , i would in these weird open-source communities on GitHub." "I observed things I had on no account heard of. I began noticing that ‘Bitcoin’ came up rather a lot." "I proposal, ‘what is the relationship between blockchains and Bitcoin?’" "’Does Bitcoin use a blockchain too?’" The complete time , i am sitting there ."particularly? Uh-huh… Then what happened? Particularly? Uh-huh." i am listening, however on the within, i’m screaming. He said, "and then I learned your movies, watched them, and now i am relatively occupied with Bitcoin." "I got here right here to learn about Bitcoin." I thought, ‘Oh, this is it! ‘ the beauty is that financial institution of the us paid to coach this guy, and now he is working for us. And they keep doing that. If you’re educated on the boring company dime after which one day — doing with Hyperledger… And ‘disbursed ledger technology,’ and many others. — you come across Bitcoin and it blows your mind. It blew my mind and it blew your intellect. We are all here considering we had that epiphany. We had that same experience of, ‘Wow, this is very specific. It’s weird and enjoyable!’ whilst you get involved and reading, you go down the rabbit hole. We see that happening. I feel that is one of the most interesting parts of this area. Neeraj asks, "hi Andreas. After plenty of investments and large research in the blockchain area, it is clear that exclusive blockchains do not need any advantages over current database ." "but I still see a lot of primary tech giants engaged on their confidential blockchains, providing them as a provider." "they’re investing a lot of money in development, as well as in advertising.Is there whatever i’m missing?" "Do confidential blockchains offer over database ?" "These tech giants have first-class skills. Still investing lots in confidential blockchains?" Yeah. There is one most important consideration , which is the hype element. Confidential blockchains, and the phrase "blockchain" itself, come with a lot hype. Folks automatically make incorrect assumptions about its characteristics and capabilities just in view that… It has the phrase "blockchain" in it. Folks assume that if it’s a blockchain, then it have to be immutable. That’s not the case. If it’s a blockchain, then you have decentralized manage.That isn’t the case. If it is a blockchain, then it is censorship resistant, impartial, competent to "track fact," or no person can cheat the foundations. None of these things are real. These are not traits of all blockchains. They are traits of some blockchains with consensus algorithms. Of a blockchain which are shaped through decentralized consensus. Men and women use the phrase "blockchain" as a way to indicate all of these characteristics, whether they’re genuine or now not, in view that they are able to elevate a ton of cash. The consultants who promote this junk to confidential businesses don’t care . They’ll be funded whether or now not succeeds. Numerous them proof-of-thought, prototype, or minimum potential product (MVP) .So far, they have got been failing in very large numbers. Establishing on a blockchain is elaborate. It requires new skills, potential, and tooling. If you will spend all of that effort, you must get anything in return. If all you might be doing is making a program clone of Ethereum and strolling it as a confidential community, proof-of-authority as an alternative of mining, with a couple of nodes on the cloud through Amazon net services (AWS), that isn’t comfortable. It’s not decentralized and for this reason it’s not immutable. It is not impartial or censorship resistant. It has none , it is going to still be rough to increase that platform. It nonetheless requires the new tooling. It’s going to have part cases which can be commonly unpredictable, just like the probability of forks, attacks, problems with propagation of transactions, nodes going out of sync, improvements and renovation. This implies you have simply exposed your self to a whole boatload of latest, untested, experimental technological know-how. Get nothing in return, rather than a slow, inefficient, centralized database.There be applications where exclusive blockchains are critical, applications the place the current fame quo is a centralized service provider. , the clearinghouse operate. In those cases, you have got a bunch of banks, fiscal institutions, or parties who do not believe every different. They’re going to need to put into effect a type of federated, closed blockchain. The situation is, if they are trying to build their own, the task will become a specifications warfare. Design-by way of-committee , the place competing events inside this coalition framework will try to… Insert their own intellectual property. Committee technical requirements on the entrance-end, while attorneys… Are securing patents on that technological know-how , to get an part on . Will introduce their own pet projects and protocol changes to get a aggressive abilities. Effectively, the same problem at the beginning had.The rationale the events chose to make use of anything like this is for the reason that they don’t believe every other. They grow to be sabotaging development efforts. Some of the intriguing of open public blockchain development is that… Aren’t, , be driven by company interests within a committee. Alternatively, it’s pushed with the aid of a very giant quantity of volunteers who’re developing with distinct motivations. Lots of these motivations are impartial towards interests of quite a lot of businesses worried in progress. Even though there are corporate-subsidized builders, they arrive from so many distinct industries, representing a variety of pursuits and purposes that they don’t seem to be immediately influencing the protocol. To influence the protocol, however they most commonly can’t impact the protocol to offer competencies to anybody party. It is very problematic, even within the case the place you need to build a federated closed approach, which is fairly better than a wholly centralized … A clearinghouse or trusted third occasion. Even a use case the dynamics of design-with the aid of-committee projects will undermine it.We have now noticeable banks attempt to do these tasks over and over. I have labored on enormous initiatives like this in monetary offerings, with a coalition of banks looking to create… "the following open standard" for payments, for international wire transfers, for bank cards or credit card chips, and many others, These necessities transfer very slowly, typically the least usual denominator, the least functional model, or in the opposite path with the aid of the whole lot within the kitchen sink, crammed with too features and capabilities. All people needs their little pet venture to be integrated, and so they fail. We saw this within the telecom wars within the ’80s and ’90s, when they had been seeking to compete with the web. Closed units of progress. We noticed this with the standards for electronic mail that failed.Internet e mail was once higher and easier. We saw this with requisites for directory services and identification which failed. Company units were too intricate, developed by opponents who had been jockeying for position. We saw this in the development of protocols like integrated services network (ISDN), which was once purported to be a competitor to internet broadband. We noticed this in the progress of messaging and video conferencing. In all of those circumstances, when the industry avid gamers tried to together and create a usual set of requisites, and protocols, they failed. Open blockchain development publicly and collaboratively… A collection of mutual principles, external the purview of company interests that… Force the design-by way of-committee progress of personal blockchains. Exclusive blockchains are inefficient and don’t present any of the benefits of decentralization. The fee to put in force them is just too excessive. The possibilities of competitors coming together and making a impartial, open average that serves the wishes of the industry, as a substitute than jockeying for role, is beautiful slim. But let them keep attempting. As we saw with the open internet, organizations , "We can’t be on the open internet; it’s too wild, insecure, and outside of our manipulate!" eventually saw that, correctly, these are the advantages: being impartial, being outside of the manage of any group, having standards which might be designed… For a extensive kind of functions as an alternative than a special niche.. That to corporations participating on the open internet, seeking to construct their own competitor. I believe the equal confidential blockchains. The intranet of cash is an extraordinarily slim use case, with advantages, and is really still rough to reap. .
Bitcoin Q&A: Enterprise "blockchain" gentrification?
Tumblr media
Hi, i am just wondering… Shall we say that 5% of the total population get out of their relief zone… They usually transfer to cryptocurrencies. When do you consider that this gentrification will come, mainstream person friendliness? Group be then? Will say, "that is gentrified, i’m too ? It’s already happening. At the second, it’s mainly matters that persons call… "blockchain" , "company blockchain," "blockchain" proof-of-inspiration, "blockchain alliance," and projects utilizing blockchain to do blockchain blockchain blockchain… And yes, this is Consensus "Blockchain Week" in the big apple. I need to have forgotten to go there. I came right here rather. They will say that phrase quite a bit. Gentrification is already going down, the makes an attempt to wrap all of this in a sanitized corporate atmosphere.The awesome thing about it is, that doesn’t do away with the core ideas and values anymore. They’ve built their possess little neighborhood and it’s boring. They’re doing their possess little thing. The consultants are making great money The humorous factor is, I estimated this in 2013. I advised that they (banks, gigantic software corporations) would start blockchain tasks funding. With this funding, they’d instruct program builders to work on "blockchain" . How will they teach program builders to work on "blockchain" ? They might purchase my booklet, or do some publications online, and finding out from the existing Bitcoin code base.They will to copy existing code, learn about cryptography fundamentals and elliptic curve . They’re going to learn about private-public key , hash algorithms, and consensus algorithms. They are going to be taught about proof-of-work. So, , these developers will discover Bitcoin . Persons concept that used to be a humorous . How would they probably do it ? Then I went to a convention in Singapore. Vitalik Buterin and i had been each doing shows for the meetup. A younger child in his early 20s came to me and stated, "Mr.Antonopoulos, i’ve been staring at your videos." "i have been in the blockchain house for a 12 months and a 1/2. A few months ago, I discovered Bitcoin." , "What? How will you be within the blockchain house for a year and a half of, however best notice Bitcoin in the last two months?" He said, "I went to a financial institution of america presentation." "A advisor pointed out this new science called ‘blockchain,’ Hyperledger and Ripple." "They pointed out ‘dispensed ledger technology,’ federated ledgers, proof-of-authority, proof-of-stake." "All of that. They didn’t say the word ‘Bitcoin’ as soon as. It wasn’t on the slides." "Then I was once hired, received involved in a challenge, started working with Hyperledger, and studying ."
