Blorbos at Conference!

Long time, no update, but this project is moving forward! This weekend, we're at a conference hosted by the Society for Cinema and Media Studies, or SCMS, presenting as part of a panel devoted to fan studies.

Why do panels matter?

First and foremost, it's a way to get research before a bunch of other researchers while it's still in progress. This helps catch poorly formed ideas, surface new good ideas, and share what's coming up with the fan studies research communities. It's also good for our humble PhD student CVs!

The Findings

Of course, the most interesting part is what, actually, we're presenting, AKA the findings! They're a work in progress, and the hardest part is the coding (talked about here). Therefore, I'm focusing on what I could do deep analysis on relatively quickly. (note: these images don't have image IDs because I summarize them below, but they're graphic representations of what I talk about in the text).

The majority of survey respondents were young: about 39% were 18-22 and 32% were 23-27. A further 17% were 28-32, about 8% were 33-37, and then it got progressively smaller from there. Shoutout to all 3 respondents who were 63 and over! So glad you're here.

In terms of social media usage, most people used tumblr - unsurprising, since that's where we got our most traction for the survey. Discord was the second most likely. Part of a later analysis will be seeing if these terms are more likely to be used by different age groups or on different platforms, which is cool.

Almost everyone surveyed had heard of these terms. Blorbo was the most-used and meow meow was least used, but very, very few respondents had not heard of these terms at all. This may be in part due to how we used them in our survey recruitment, since we did want to find people who knew what these terms were so that they could define them for us.

These numbers slope slightly down because something broke when we imported them into NVivo (a coding software) and frankly I don't understand it well even when it actually works, let alone when it breaks.

Here's a little visual of the terms you suggested for characters. Unfortunately, NVivo crashes every time I try to exclude words from this word bubble (like "term"), so it's not as clear as I'd like it to be, but there are some interesting ones. Particularly interesting are the cluster of gendered terms; husbando and waifu, malewife, sexyman, boy, girl, etc. I want to do some analysis of this because it parallels some preliminary coding results. Y'all also really find your blorbos scrunkly/skrunkly/scrungly, huh?

I also want to figure out how to tell the visualizer that "glup" and "shitto" go together, because "shitto" all by its lonesome over there is cracking me up.

Qualitative Findings

Like I said, the coding is...so far from done. That's mostly due to some Ao3-author levels of life disruption from both of us. BUT! I can tentatively say a couple of things:

There are notably clear definitions about these terms. We weren't sure if there even really was a definition of "blorbo", but it clearly refers to a very specific kind of one-true-character. By contrast, comfort characters are associated with experiencing positive emotions, and meow meows are more likely to be evil or morally grey (but you love them though).

Unsurprisingly, your characters make you happy. We're distinguishing between general positive emotions, attachment, relatability, and one-true-character belovedness. Also sexiness, but that (surprisingly) hasn't come up that much.

There are a couple of ways in which darker themes come up. Villains remain beloved, but a recurring theme is also using tragedy or trauma in fiction as catharsis.

Finally, there's a lot of playful and tactile language. "Rotating him in my mind" really is that common.

Additionally, I'm really interested in the role of gender. Many of you referred to your blorbos/meow meows as your guys, with some of you clarifying that it was "my little guy (gender neutral)". Others noted that most characters you'd seen people describe as blorbos or meow meows were men/masc. This did not come up for comfort characters. Analysis of the characters you consider exemplars of each definition will help flesh out this analysis.

Still to Come

SO much. Who are these characters? Is a specific character exclusively a meow meow, or are they also a common comfort character? What types of positive emotion are associated with each type? Are these character types or do they speak to a fan's individual (or a fandom's communal) relationship with a character?

Additionally - we didn't ask about neurodivergence, but many of y'all referenced it. I'm looking forward to exploring that as well.

The author is claiming "variety" for Wyll, but it's just egregiously antiblack. Most of the mod white washes Wyll, while the rest removes his blackness to replace it with other identities - which is still extremely antiblack.

You’ve taken the subway thousands of times since moving to New York.

Morning rides, squeezed nearly to death between commuters in suits blinking back sleep and school-uniformed kids scream-laughing and paper coffee cups gripped tight by winter-numb fingers.

Long trips with your sketchbook on your lap, riding the line all the way to Pelham Bay Park and back, to surface above ground out where there’s a little more space to breathe, until the setting sun floods orange glow between the buildings just before you descend again.

Late nights coming home, Namjoon’s head thudding back against the train window behind him as he dozes off, one arm thrown around your shoulder to ward off any drunk creeps, his free hand interlaced with Yoongi’s on his other side.

It’s always been the three of you, first in friendship, and now that the two of them have figured out they’re something more, you don’t mind it. But when it’s late and you’ve had enough drinks to feel warm all the way through, to melt something open inside of you, and you glance over to see a loving flicker of eyelashes exchanged as Namjoon leans down and presses a kiss to Yoongi’s temple, you can’t help it.

There’s a little bit of an ache there, right behind your ribs. Sometimes.

But mostly, when it comes to the train, you take the 6 to school. You go through the motions this morning the same as you always do: headphones around your neck, bag slung over your shoulder, immediately dropping into the first empty seat you see as the train doors shudder closed and the car starts to move. Six stops down, 51st street to Astor Place, five days a week, you know it like a heartbeat.

You just wish you knew him, too.

Subway Boy, as Yoongi affectionately labeled him the time you got two pitchers of margaritas deep and made the mistake of confessing to your roommates about your crush— if it can even be called that. Can you truly have a crush on someone you know nothing about, not even their name?

Well, you know a few things.

He must live further north than you, because on the days you see him, he’s already on the train when you board at 51st.

He must like music, because he always has a set of fancy bluetooth earbuds in.

You’re pretty sure he’s an athlete of some sort, because he’s usually carrying a gym bag—and because during this summer’s heat wave, the one and only time you’ve seen him wear shorts, you nearly fainted at the thick, defined muscles of his thighs.

He has an affinity for jewelry, delicate silver always glinting through the multiple piercings in his ears. At odds with this, he seems to prefer to dress comfortably, and you’ve seen him in enough branded school t-shirts and sweats to figure he must also be an NYU student, though you can’t say for sure if he’s undergrad or graduate.

You deeply hope you’re not crushing on someone who still needs a fake ID to drink, but there’s no way to be certain.

Most importantly, you know that he is absolutely stunning. Elegantly handsome, with expressive deep brown eyes, skin like glass, and round cheeks and full lips that flush frozen pink on particularly frigid New York days. His hair has changed colors a few times over the months that have passed since you first took notice of him, but it’s currently a honey blonde, and long enough that he often reaches up to card a hand through it. He does it now, pushing loose strands back to expose his forehead as he frowns down at his phone.

On days where you share the same car, you notice very little else that happens on the ride, thoroughly entranced in Subway Boy’s beauty and his mystery. The train could probably catch fire and you’d miss it entirely.

Today happens to be one of those days, and excitement glitters in your bloodstream as you realize he’s seated across from you. The rush of seeing him always feels like its own reward, some kind of cosmic sign that the day is going to be a good one.

And then the train stops moving.

Hi!!! Thank you so much for the ask! I'm so flattered by your belief in my ability to write a good story!!!!

Short answer: YES VERY MUCH SO.

Long answer: Would you believe I have that entire year outlined? I have so much of that series outlined, and I am working on multiple parts of that series as we speak. The thing is (the issue on the table, to quote Hamilton), I have a LOT of Dasey ideas. And, as I think most of my readers have figured out (some of y'all have even teased me about it <3), I am incapable of writing anything short. It's long and detailed or NOTHING.

So, to continue with this long answer, that year is on the docket. I VERY MUCH want to write it. I am excited to write it. I'm just also excited to write this current AU I'm working on, these four other parts of the kick at the darkness series, the werewolf fic, the Life with Luca series, the vampyre series, the WSC AU, the mustache fic, etc, etc, etc. See? I have a problem. I have too many ideas.

I am praying that I get a chance to write all my ideas and flesh out all my outlines because I think they're all good stories and I'd love to share them with you. I'm just a woman with a lot of responsibilities and not always the best health, and not nearly enough hours.

BUT. I hope. One day. Honest I do.

also just learned via your post that "Drafts" is a thing?! I've been tagging things I intend to come back to later with "undescribed" but the trouble is I've had no luck navigating my own blog with tags - I can't search for anything on my blog at all ever, let alone make a search like "all images/videos not tagged #undescribed" - so that's me seeking help within the here-to-help post. Getting back on track.

I haven't used the "described" tag or similar tags because I believe accessibility should be the default and inaccessibility should be the deviation from the norm ...but this has resulted in me being in a pickle in terms of my ability to access things, so maybe I should get off my high horse :') I will happily use the tags y'all laid out in your pinned post tho :)

when it comes to describing text-based things I'm a whizz, usually can do it every time.

when it comes to fanart I have a fun time doing it, but struggle with not making it verbose, and so I struggle to do it with any regularity.

when it comes to popular media (GIFs/images from TV shows, films, musicians, famous people) I'm basically always starting from complete ignorance, but if I have the energy I look through other people's tags and do some online sleuthing to figure it out.

in terms of my convention for IDing people, I do tend to mention people's skin colour across the board, and I don't tend to gender people unless I can easily find out their gender from a reputable source. happy to switch conventions for posts on y'all's blog tho :)

also I'm relatively new to this so will make mistakes - if anyone who successfully uses a screen reader on tumblr (mine doesn't work on tumblr at all) notices some of my formatting decisions make things scuffed or less helpful, please do let me know!

I've checked out ya pinned post and I'm amazed by the image-to-text tool[1] and case-converting tool[2] you've linked! thanks for sharing them - this could make things way faster! :D tho obvs ya gotta check that things are all in order [1] https://ocr.space/ [2] https://convertcase.net/ (sidenote does anyone know how screenreaders would read an inline link, and is there a proper way to format things so it's actually helpful - I'll link the image-to-text tool again as an example) (it's just occurred to me that tumblr asks might do funky things with hyperlinks so mayhaps this should be a seeking help post on my own blog - ah well, ho hum, we live in hope!)

LOVELOVELOVE ur writing ur my fav tmr writer on here!!! lately ive been suffering from extreme brainrot about reader who was alone in her maze i have sososo many ideas youre an icon and a visionary so i was wondering if u could write a reader that survived in a maze by herself but instead of being awkward and standoffish shes kind of a himbo? HEAR ME OUT like she has 2 braincells total but she came into the maze kind of jacked with combat experience for some reason so like a few days in she goes into the maze at night bc why not? what could go wrong? and she ends up killing a monster? and she still spends like 3 years in there despite the monsters being less than an obstacle bc she cant map the maze for shit. once she gets out (shes buff as hell) she meets the gladers and is all omg people!!!! friends!!! absolutely no self preservation around these strangers because shes a dumbass plot twist she cannot register human beings as threats, all shes ever had to worry about are monsters and the occasional mean sheep and the only human she knows even exists is herself and well shes alright so 🤷 the gladers are sus because shes so lax about them but also she survived the maze on her own and is very physicially intimidating so oh well right flashforward and the gladers are seeing her in action for the first time and she is. so offputting she only knows how to kill monsters reader will watch a man come up to her with a giant gun with no reaction and then upon thomas or somebodys request she will "do something" (she BITES the motherfucker in the NECK) and everyone is like what the fuck????? reader watches the gang sprint for the lives away from Some White Guy (armed killer working for their lifelong captives) and is like what the fuck???? if u can id love to see gallys reaction to this hot mess

Alright, this has been sat in my inbox for forever, I have rewritten it about 50 times. And for the life of me, I cannot figure out how to make this work.

So, I am simply giving up so I can move onto other requests because I haven't done much for a long time.

I am very sorry, this was a very funny request but I cannot work out for the life of me how to make this work in an easy way that doesn't do loads of time skips.

You know I should share how I got Ryoshu's Pierre ID. Ima share that experience here. Y'all know catalysts right? Idk wtf they are proper but I figured a method that helped me get Don's Telepole in the past.

anyway thank you for the ask, because now i get to talk about one of my oldest OCs that i have and still use :')

for L.... i have a few options, but i'll go with my mans Lincoln!

this is my boy lincoln orion!! i have some art of him but i want to change his design a little again so for now i'll share a picrew of my special guy <3 lincoln is one of many ocs of mine that i struggle to make in picrews but that's okay

ANYWAY lincoln is an oc i made when i was like 12 or so and he's so so important to me, even if i don't think about him as much as i used to. he's a bitch and i like him so much.

the original premise behind lincoln, whose name used to be spelled linkin b/c i was a huge fan of linkin park growing up (still am, don't @ me), is that he was a mutant fella created via illegal human experimentation. (side-note, how many of y'all had ocs like that at some point? because i feel like that's a weirdly common oc premise.) why? good question! but he's here!

lincoln has changed and evolved a ton over the years as i've refined him into a more rounded and interesting character, and even if i don't pay as much attention to him as i used to he has a special place in my heart.

i want to. bring him back somehow. maybe throw him in a proper story.... gonna have to think about that.

anyway i'm tired and about to head to dinner so uH real quick rapid-fire lincoln facts:

his original design had wings but i hated drawing them and figuring out how he'd wear clothes with them, so i got rid of them. however, i didn't just say "no wings now," i wrote it into his original story that his wings were removed. owie!

he exists in kind of a vague setting i've done a little worldbuilding for with mutants and regular humans existing alongside each other, but that one needs some rehauling honestly-

he's a prime example of "sometimes i have cis ocs but if i think about them long enough they stop being cis." he can be a little non-binary. as a treat.

one of the oldest pieces of digital art of mine that i have saved is actually a drawing of lincoln's original design! if people want to see that i'd be down to share it as like a comparison <3

he has a lot of tattoos that i always forget how to draw

i originally created him to be a background character in an rp my friend and i were doing on feralheart, and then i got attached to him so i kept him.
