#and gus is LITERALLY standing on his stomach and grabbing both sides of his face
Note
Proposal: Peppino is a really caring S/O, friend, husband, what have you, but he's really oblivious when someone's interested. No matter how much Gustavo flirted, showed special attention and affection to Pep, our lovely protagonist dismissed it as as Gus being really nice (which to be honest, he is).
Rotating this in my brain bc i am still thinking of how to characterize him in this way so thank u 🧡 This is also why i havent tried to do any real shipping content w him (cause i wanna do more stuff w him and the bosses)😭
🤔🤔🤔 I feel like hes not exactly oblivious. He can read a room and take a hint, but hes a little dense (a little bit!!!!). His indifference/lack of a reaction comes off as being completely unaware but in reality, he is thinking of Other Pressing Matters. Like. When traveling through the gnome forest for deliveries, hes very aware of them being Weird and Friendlier than usual (which in the past, HAS actually translated to some level of flirting) but he doesnt want to look too deep into it bc the forest is Hot and its full of Bugs and it makes him Itchy and Sweaty and hes Tired from delivering everything ON FOOT bc his stupid scooter and car cant drive on fucking GRASS.
Like hes Aware but he doesnt pay it any mind. Two to three strangers being sweet with him? Yeah sure that makes sense i guess. He’ll entertain them :) But like, the MAJORITY of his customers in this forest being equally weird and friendly? Maybe gnomes are just Like That. Gustavo is clearly a weird and friendly little guy. Dont think too hard about it 😊👍🏾 Hes got other shit to worry about.
So honestly Gus would be in hell trying to woo this fuckin man 😭 Not because hes not trying hard enough, and not bc Pep is so completely oblivious, but bc in this specific instance, Peppino is just a man stressed about 40 different things all at once, and allocating ANY of that brain power to determine if his friend it flirting or being friendly when Gustavo is just known to be very friendly to everyone is a waste of his precious, LIMITED mental energy 😭

//Fushiguro Megumi
Warnings: NSFW, somnophilia, implied cockwarming, masturbation, sniffing, cursing
Characters: Fushiguro Megumi X Fem!reader
[Date: 2 March 2021]
Megumi walks into the dark and quiet space of the apartment; having just come back from another assignment on dealing a bunch of curses. He's been out of town for a week straight which he was not used to.
Undressing his jacket, Megumi carefully enters the bedroom he shares with you. Seeing your sleeping figure under the blanket causes his face to relax. His plan was to quickly take a shower and join you in bed for the night.
The sound of sheets rustling and you mumbling causes the male to halt his movement. The last thing he needs is to disturb your sleep. He watched you tentatively, your body that was laying facing away moved to rest on your back.
You mutter something under your breath before staying stilled. Megumi only let out a sigh of relief after confirming that you were still in slumber; chest moving up and down in a steady rhythm.
He eyed your sleeping face; a small smile ease its way on his face at your tranquil profile. His sight wanders to your body, going lower and lower, before his eyes widen.
Your lower body was covered with the blanket before you shifted so he didn’t realize that you were dressed in just a black shirt and red lace silk panties.
Your legs were bare before him, the exposed skin reminds him how much he craves the warmth and touch of it against his own. The embroidery of your tight panties fit your shape from your waist to your ass; the sight of it was erotic to his eyes.
Gulping down nervously, he slowly approaches you at the side of the bed. He has to admit, being away from you for that long did cause him to feel a bit lonely but he didn’t expect it to turn into sexual frustration. Judging by your face, he knows that you're tired as well; being a jujutsu sorcerer yourself.
But the heat pooling in his guts tells him satisfying himself later in the shower was not enough to eliminate the desire he was feeling but, at the same time, he doesn’t want to wake you up just to please him. He feels too guilty to do that.
So he finds himself tugging on the belt of his pants, pulling it down and steadily climbing on the bed- standing on his knees between your legs, looking down at your clothed cunt. Just a bit, he thought, just enough to calm down before he finished it off later by himself.
He needed something of you to get off later.
Glancing back to make sure you were still asleep, he dipped down his head to hover over your clothed pussy. He took a deep breath before rubbing his nose and lips against your heat. It was nice and warm; he could feel the humidity radiating through the thin fabric of the panties.
The smell of your juices invades his senses and he was quick to feel his arousal heightening from just the scent.
Megumi closed his eyes to rub his face slowly across your cunt. Although there was a piece of clothing separating himself from your heat, he could imagine nibbling and licking on your folds. Imagining the feeling of your wet slick dripping down his chin as he eats you out sends an electrifying pleasure straight to his cock.
He straightens up and looks down, his dick now hard and erect; tightening itself against his boxers. His hands move to facepalm himself- cheeks flush in embarrassment.
God- he looks like some kind of pervert getting off of you while you were asleep and getting hard from just sniffing your heat.
He moved to release his dick from the confinement of his boxers, a hand lightly gripping on the length. The vines were protruding out, head red begging for release as pre cum starts to dribble out of the slit. Megumi starts to pump himself- his pace slow and steady, watching your lips fall apart from sleeping.
Fuck does he wish those lips were on his dick right now.
The only light illuminating the room was the lamp on the table beside you, giving him a good view of your body to him. He could feel the pre cum coating his length as he started to quicken his pace, feeling his hands getting wetter. His eyes wander to your breast.
With the absence of the blanket, the cool night air must have made you shudder. He could see your tits perking up behind your shirt, the sight of your pair of nubs mocking him. He wants to tug it, bite it, suck it- imagining himself abusing your pretty little tits until your cry from the sensitivity.
“nghhh....shit...mmhhhm”
He could feel his length throbbing against his palm; begging him to release. But he still needs a little bit more to edge him- to climax. Megumi turns his gaze to your clothed pussy. the memories of your walls engulfing him in a tight embrace- rubbing him every time he rams into you. He could feel your nails digging on the skin of his back, moaning for him to go deeper, faster.
He could still feel the heat of you pussy like yesterday. You felt so tight- so good with his dick stuff into your pretty little hole, streams of moan and his name like music to his ears. Shit, he could fuck you for hours without getting enough of you.
The reminiscent of those feelings was enough to push him to climax. With back arch and head bent backward, he closes his eyes with mouth agape; letting out a frustrated moan as he has to keep his mouth shut to not wake you up. Hot strings of his cum shot out against his other hand, his palm already ready to shield his seeds from dirtying you.
His hand that was gripping his length was slowing down- still milking out every ounce of his cum and pleasure.
It took him a full minute to calm down.
He stares down at his palm coated in white; sighing in disappointment and embarrassment before deciding to head to the bathroom quietly to clean himself up before you wake up.
“Megumi?”
Every fiber of his body froze at the sound of you calling out his name. Panic surged through him as he stared at you; eyes open and already awake, looking back at him still laying down.
Shit shit shit
Explain himself? Clear up the misunderstanding? He is literally in between your legs, dick out still wet and palm dripping with his seed. It was pretty clear what he was doing.
“How long were you awake?”
“When you started sniffing me”
“........”
He felt his soul leaving his body at that moment. God, he should have just dealt with it in the shower and waited for the next day to save himself from this situation from happening. But now, he has been caught red handed.
“Look, I-“
“-Aren’t you going to continue?”
The words die down in his mouth; eyes widen at your words. He stared down at you and examined your face. He could tell your gaze was trembling, face slightly flush and breathing unsteady.
“Do you want to? It’s late now, better to get some sleep” He asks you gently, knowing how tiring dealing with curses everyday can be mentally and physically.
“But I want to.......” Your words caught him off guard. Something stirred in him watching you mutually wanting the same thing as him. Maybe...the stress of being away from him has the same effect as him being away from you and now- the sexual tension thickens in the air.
With a final verdict, Megumi proceeds to undress himself out of his shirt, putting his weight slightly on top of you; hands caging you at the shoulder, feeling the mattress dip down as he puts the rest of his weight on his palm.
“Sorry, I’ll be a little rough” he whispered closer to you, eyes staring back at yours intensively. A hand silently moving to pull up your shirt, releasing your breast with a bounce “bare with me”
You let out a moan as he dips down to take a nub between his lips. His wet tongue swirls the perk nub, coating it with his saliva before suckling it with a bit of force. His hand took care of the other nub, pulling and pinching at it.
The motion causes a wave of pleasure surging through your body to your core. You arch your back as Megumi began to grope and lick harder at your breast.
“Me...gu...mi...” The moan you let out was shaky, fingers lacing through his spiky black hair.
You watch his lips go lower; leaving a trail of saliva as he licks from your torso to the navel of your stomach before finally reaching your panties. He glances back at you, eyelash long and visible thanks to the lamp illuminating his features.
There was something about looking down at him, his face close to your hip bone- teeth biting at the edge of your panties asking for assurance. You nodded back at him as you watched him pull the clothing away from your heat.
You can feel the cool air between your crotch; his hands finding their way to spread your legs wider and position it so that your knees are up.
“You're so wet” He hummed, watching as you squirm when he traced the lips of your pussy with his fingers. You grip onto the sheets and bit back a moan, feeling his finger rubbing your wet folds.
“Could it be-“ Megumi question, spreading your folds to enjoy the view of your juices dripping down. He chuckled at your reaction, your knees buckling at the pleasure as he played with your cunt.
“-Did you get turn on by me masturbating in front of you?”
You blush at his question but it only serves as a confirmation to him. You push his chest lightly with your foot, causing him to smirk at your pouty face.
“I’m not the one who was rubbing and sniffing at someone’s underwear while they were asleep”
Megumi grabs onto the ankle of your foot on his chest; positioning it to rest on his shoulder as he moves down to your core. He could have a clear view of your wet pussy; puffy and warm ready to be devoured by his lips.
“I guess both of us are perverts to each other” He declared before you felt his lips on your heat. Megumi moved his tongue to lick between your folds; making sure to slightly suck on the skin which he knew would drive you crazy.
Moans and mewls escape your lips with tears threatening at the corner of your eyes. It felt so good to feel him eating you out, the sensation of it transforming you into a mess; toes curling at the overwhelming amount of pleasure
Megumi continues to lick and suck on your folds, taking his time to indulge himself while drinking you up. The sound of him slurping you up echoes together with the sweet sound of your moans. He could feel your thighs tremble against him.
He detaches his mouth from your heat, a string of your juice can be seen at the corner of his lips.
“I’m gonna put it in now, okay?”
You watch him grip onto his length, rubbing it against your folds before his head slowly enters your hole. The stretch was uncomfortable at first; your walls trying to adjust his length pushing to expand your hole.
He leaned down closer to you as he slowly pushed his cock into you; his face twisted at the amount of warmth and how tight your hole was rubbing against his length with every movement. You wrap your arms around his shoulder, pulling him closer to your chest until he is fully in you.
“Megumi, start moving. I can’t wait any longer” You begged against his ears, causing the male to groan. He began to thrust into you, the sound of wet noses filled the room as his pace started to pick up.
“Shit, your so fucking tight. You feel so good clutching onto my dick. Fuck- your so warm. So good taking me in”
 His thrust speeds up, feeling your walls throbbing against his length. You could only think of his hips moving into yours, the feeling of his dick ramming into you so roughly.
“You're so big Megumi. I can feel you reaching my womb. Faster Megumi, I want your seed inside me, filling me up”
A growl erupted from his throat. The way you dirty talk was making him feel more aroused, ramming into you with no mercy; hearing you moan and scream his name in pleasure. God, how can you be so sexy and erotic begging him to cum inside you?
The both you can hear the mattress squeaking as Megumi’s thrust moves in a godly speed, feeling his skin slapping against yours. Each shove reaching your sweet spot leading you into a drooling mess. The heat of his body against yours was overwhelming but you grip tighter; feeling your orgasm getting closer.
With one last harsh thrust, the both of you come undone. Orgasms wash over every inch of your body like a tidal wave. He could feel you tighten up against him as his cum filled you up, the excess fluid dripping out of your hole and deliciously pooling on the sheets.
The heat in his gut was no longer there. The one week of missing you has escaped just like that after connecting with you.
You hold each other’s sweaty bodies, shuddering and trembling from the overwhelming orgasm. You let your fingers wander to his back, tracing the muscle in a soothing motion. He could feel your breathing under him, the intimacy between the both you relaxing him.
“Can we stay like this?” He nuzzled his nose against the junction of your neck, taking in your sweet scent that reminds him of home. He was still in you but no sensual intention was behind his question; only meant to hold you close against him lovingly.
You pat his head, a small smile of endearment on your lips.
“Of course you can”

Do You Want the Knife You Left In My Back, or Can I Keep It?
Rating: Teen and up, Gen
An injured Hunter wanders into Hexside. What was Luz supposed to do, just let him bleed out on the floor?
Ch1/?: Backstabber
Ao3
“The human must be truly formidable if the Emperor sent both of us to capture her.”
Hunter glanced back at Kikimora. “Nah, he was probably just worried that you’d mess it up, so he sent me to make sure it went smoothly.”
Kikimora studied her claws. “I know it was you that attacked me when I tried to bring the palisman to the Emperor. You and the human.”
Hunter whipped around. “Oh, do you want to talk about that now? Because I know that you knocked my airship out of the sky and tried to have me killed. So you have nothing on me. You tell the Emperor what I did, I tell him what you did.”
“The human really must be formidable if she managed to get the palisman from you.”
Hunter rolled his eyes behind his mask. “She’s really not. I was a little bit busy fighting you to worry about her.”
“Truly a strong foe,” Kikimora continued, “So strong she was able to overcome you.”
“What are you talking ab—”
A blast of magic hit him, and magical bonds snaked around his hands and feet, yanking on him and sending him to his knees. Hunter struggled and tugged against the ties, but they held firm. “HEY! Kikimora, what—”
Something sharp touched his back, right between his shoulder blades, and he froze. “She attacked us from behind,” Kikimora hissed in his ear, “She went for you, first.” Something slammed into his back, like she’d punched him. “She was brutal. Merciless.”
Kikimora twisted her hand, and Hunter felt a tingling shock, and then—
His world exploded. Heat flooded out from the wound, and Hunter heard a guttural, choking scream.
Oh, wait.
That was him.
Kikimora pushed him facedown to the ground, knife still in his back. “I killed her, of course. It was a tough fight, but to avenge a fellow coven member? Of course I didn’t give up until I succeeded.”
Hunter coughed, blood coating the inside of his mouth. “Kiiii…”
“That’s what happens,” Kikimora hissed, “when people try to replace me.”
She walked off, and Hunter just lay there on the ground, his mind fuzzy with pain.
He had to…
Ugh—
Hunter pulled out his staff, and inch by agonizing inch, used it to pull himself up, shaking. He twisted, reaching for the knife, but the movement just tore more, and the world blacked out for a second. He gripped his staff tightly, his knuckles white.
Kikimora could easily kill him in this state, if the wound itself didn’t kill him.
That meant the only thing standing between her and total control over the coven and Uncle Belos’ complete trust was… Luz.
Kikimora would probably go to the owl house first.
That gave Hunter the advantage.
Xxx
“Thorn vault!” Luz called, slamming her hand down on her glyph. The plant erupted outward, pushing her over Skara’s head to the goal. Skara jumped, but missed her by inches. “Ah! Not again!”
Luz touched down. “You’ll get it someday.”
“Unlikely!” Gus called from the bleachers, “I predict never!”
“Zip it, twerp!” Skara yelled back, “Just wave your flags!” She dusted herself off. “One more try?”
“One more try,” Luz agreed, “Amity, you ready?”
“Always!”
Gus screeched, pointing. “Luz!”
Luz whipped around in the direction he was pointing to see an awfully familiar staff moving slowly towards her.
And the person clutching it like a lifeline.
Amity raced towards Luz, skidding in front of her, an abomination already rising out of the dirt. “Stay back!” she warned Hunter, “I beat you once, I can do it again!”
Luz put a hand on her arm. “Wait! There’s something wrong!” She moved cautiously towards Hunter—he looked awful. Residue magic swirled around his wrists and ankles, and…
“Is that blood?!” Luz rushed forward to him, taking his arm. She stifled a scream at the jagged blade sticking out of his back, blood staining his white cape red. “Ohmygosh, what happened to you?!”
His chest heaved with ragged breaths. “Kikimora—never thought—this open—” He slumped against her. “After… you…”
“Find Viney!” Luz yelled to Skara, “Amity—”
“I’m not leaving you alone with him!”
“Okay, fine, Gus, get Eda!”
Luz lowered Hunter to the ground, holding him up so that the knife wouldn’t go further in. “Don’t die!”
Amity hovered over them. “What did you mean, ‘after you?’ Were you coming to hurt Luz?!”
Hunter coughed, blood flecking his lips. “I…”
“Amity, he’s in really bad shape! You can’t interrogate him right now!”
Hunter pawed weakly at her hand. “Kikimora… want… to kill… you… exposed…”
“Okay, okay, I get it. Big bad coven leader wants me dead. Now shhhhhh, stop moving around, you’re going to make it worse!”
Puddles landed next to her, Viney sliding off of his back. “Whoa! You must have been having the most intense grudgeby match of all time!” She knelt next to them, gently turning Hunter onto his stomach. “Oooo, that’s bad. You should have gotten the healing teacher, I don’t know if—”
Luz grabbed her arm. “No! No teachers! Please.”
Viney hissed, examining the knife. “This isn’t just a regular knife—there are some kinds of objects that are enchanted to be resilient to healing magic—in case you really, really want to make sure your enemy bites it.” She drew a circle with her finger, and the knife glowed golden. “This one isn’t too powerful—I can stop the bleeding and put a patch on all of the internal problems, but I can’t seal it up. He’ll have to heal on his own. Where did you even get this knife?!”
Hunter whimpered, and Luz grabbed Viney’s hand. “It doesn’t matter! Just do it, before he dies!”
“Okay.” Viney snapped her fingers, and Puddles shooed Luz to the side, offering Hunter a cloth to bite down on and gently holding him still with his talons. Viney took a deep breath, and the knife glowed again, floating out of Hunter’s back, the cloak floating away, too. Hunter let out a muffled scream into the cloth, and tensed, which just made the blood spurt harder out of the wound. Viney drew a circle over his back, and the bleeding abruptly stopped. Puddles coughed up bandages, and a needle and thread, and Viney nodded to Luz and Amity. “This isn’t going to be pretty. You might want to look away.”
Amity pulled Luz away. “Luz, what exactly are you planning to do now? Just dump him on the doorstep of the conformatorium and run away?”
“No way! What if Kikimora finds him first? We can’t just send him back, she is literally trying to kill him!”
“And he’s trying to catch you!”
“That doesn’t mean I’m going to let him die!” Luz took Amity’s hands. “Amity, you fought him too. You didn’t feel even a little bit bad for him?”
Amity looked away. “Maybe a little bit,” she admitted, “But… if you’re not going to leave him with his coven, what is your plan?”
Luz bit her lip, staring at the ground. “Iwasthinkingmaybehecouldstayattheowlhouse,” she mumbled.
“What?”
“I was thinking he could stay with me,” she said louder, “At the owl house.”
“What?! No way! Luz, are you crazy?!”
“Ooo, hehe, jury’s still out on that one, Amity, you know that.”
“I’m serious, Luz, you can’t let him into the owl house!”
“Look at him, Amity, does he look dangerous to you?”
Amity looked back to where he was lying limp on the grudgeby field, Puddles nuzzling his face. “… I guess not… but still, he doesn’t have to attack you, all he has to do is put a trap, or let someone else into the owl house to bump you off!”
“The only people out for me right now are him and Kikimora. And Kikimora is also trying to kill him. Sooooooo I’m not overly worried about it.” Luz gave Amity’s hands a squeeze. “C’mon. I think I can handle one stabbed guy in a fight, give me that much credit at least.”
“… Fine. But good luck convincing Eda, she doesn’t exactly have the most… friendly of feelings towards him.”
Speak of the devil, Eda flew over the fence on her staff, Gus hanging onto the end. “I heard a kid got stabbed! Luz, you didn’t tell me it was knife day at school, I would have come to watch!”
“Kni—okay, sure, that’s a thing. It’s not knife day, Eda. None of the students got stabbed.”
“What? So what happened?”
Luz pointed across the field. “Uhhhhhhhm, soooooooo?”
“No. Absolutely not.”
“Eeeeedaaaaaa, I haven’t even asked anything yet!”
“Okay, let me set parameters for your next few sentences, then. If you are about to ask me if we can, in any way, shape, or form, take care of the Golden Guard and his lovely new piercing, the answer is no.”
“But Eda—”
“No. Nada. Nein. You speak Spanish, right? No. Any other ways I can say it?”
“Eda, he needs help!”
“Dump him on his coven’s doorstep, ring the doorbell, and run away. We’re not taking care of him.”
“Eda, listen—”
“No, you listen, Luz. That kid is trouble—and not the fun kind. You try to be nice to him, and he’ll stab you in the back. He’s been Belos-ified through and through.”
“I thought the same thing about Lilith!”
“Yeah? Well, I didn’t. My sister’s too much of a nerdy dork to ever be really horrible. This kid’s a nerd, sure, but he’s not Lili. He’s dangerous, he’s desperate, and unlike Lilith, he’s working completely for Belos, not himself.”
“Eda, Kikimora’s trying to kill him!”
“Well, I hope they succeed at murdering each other, and maybe take Belos down with them while they’re at it.”
“It would be murder to leave him at the coven!”
“Guess I’m going to be a murderer, then. Add it to the list of crimes.”
“Wouldn’t you want him to help me if I was in his place? If you were stuck in the owl beast form, and King was trying to kill me, wouldn’t you want him to help me?”
“I sincerely doubt King’s murdering skills, and NO, I think I wouldn’t want you anywhere close to Belos.”
Luz gave Eda big puppy-dog eyes, and her mentor sighed.
“Buuuuut I guess I see your point. Gah. Fiiiiiiiineee. You can take him home.” Eda leveled a finger at Luz. “But you have to feed him, and water him, and clean up after his messes, and keep him entertained, understood?”
“He’s not a pet, Eda.”
“I said, understood?”
“Understood.” Luz hugged Eda. “Thank you!”
“Oh, and if he tries to hurt you, if he tries to sell us out to Belos? I will do Kookymora a solid and finish the job.”

Leave Her Wild: chapter 3 - N. MacKinnon
Summary: MacKenzie heads to Washington and cashes in her bet with Nathan.
Warnings: swearing, fluff and stuff
Word count: 2,565 (swear they will get longer)
Series masterlist / Puck ‘n Grind’s masterlist
Tumblr media
Washington.
The two texted back and forth over the week. Mostly randomness with a splash of real life. A friendship was blooming with the text conversation but what else could come of it? Neither one seemed to want to touch the subject. Kenzie wasn't even sure what to make of the attention from Nate. She threw herself into work as she normally would.
MacKenzie spent a few days in Colorado Springs for work but took advantage of her time off by hiking the Garden of the Gods. She was was halfway through Palmers trail when she feels her phone and decides to stop for water and take in the view plus check her phone thinking it was work. She laughs to herself realizing it was in fact not work.
Nate: how’s Colorado Springs?
She snaps a picture of her view and sends it.
Kenzie: gorgeous as always
Nate: holy shit are you hiking alone?
Kenzie snaps a selfie where you can see she’s alone and sends it.
Kenzie: don’t worry not anything too dangerous today. Lol
Nate: ok… not worried. Anyways, thought maybe dinner could be in DC since we will both be there next week.
Kenzie thinks about it and starts walking again. She realizes dinner out of town may in fact make things less awkward.
Kenzie: depends on my schedule but that should work
Nate: good. Enjoy the rest of your hike.
MacKenzie did just that. One thing most people knew about her was she loved adventures and trying new things. She rarely goes to the same vacation spot twice. Always wanting to try new restaurants and really only frequents Gus’s place in Denver. She liked to be free which drove her mother insanely crazy but MacKenzie didn’t seem to care. Her dad was her biggest supporter. Constantly sending her wanderlust Instagram posts after she taught him how. At least her mom had home in Kenzie’s brother, Cameron. Cam was doing everything he was expected to do including recently proposing to his high school sweetheart which Kenzie thought was dumb as seniors in college. His life was his life that was for sure, well and maybe their mother's life too. She couldn't control Kenzie which meant Cam got all of her energy.
The flight to D.C. was a breeze but busy would be an understatement as MacKenzie met her client at the end of the week. The demands were insane in the time frame. She spent almost all weekend in her hotel room working and talking with her team back in Colorado.
Nate: would you want to come to the game? I have tickets.
Kenzie: I would love to but I don’t even know if I can do dinner I’m so swamped
Nate: you need to eat right?
Kenzie: I mean, yeah. I’ll order in
Nate: how about you come to my hotel, we have an amazing restaurant here. You can work and eat
MacKenzie thought it over as she looked out her window. Walking the block and a half to Nathan’s hotel tomorrow night seemed doable. He had a point that she needed to eat and could work while they ate. It would complete their wager from the card game in the same instance. Wondered if Gabe or one of the other players would be around to ensure the dinner happened. MacKenzie thought she wouldn’t have the awkwardness of it feeling like a date this way. Plus, she wanted to try the restaurant out since last time she was in town and another client mentioned it. Mosi was all for the dinner when she called ensuring Kenzie her condo's mail was indeed checked. She thought this was the perfect arrangement and MacKenzie couldn’t find a reason to say no. Thinking Nate would already be at the arena for the game she sent a text.
Kenzie: Yes, to dinner at your hotel if you are still up to it after the game
She starts typing away again and laughs when the ping is almost immediate.
Nate: Perfect. I'll text you when we are back on the bus.
MacKenzie decided to turn the game on while she worked. She normally would have something on as background noise while she worked. She knows she can get lost in work and wanted to make sure she knew to pack up her laptop and such waiting for Nathan's call. She hears his name and looks up to see him score with less than a minute left. The Avalanche was already been leading but that goal ensured their win. She decided to change then couldn’t decide if she should pack up her work yet. “How sure how much time would he take between the game and the bus?” Kenzie asked her reflection. She texted him nice game to see if he would respond. He did a few moments later so she packed up slowly. Kenzie walks down to the street turning to head over to his hotel, humming to herself trying to not over think this very simple dinner. She slows down as she sees the charter bus in front of the hotel. Fuck.
"MAAAAC! Good to see you!" Gabe's voice comes booming out of the bus with some others chiming in as the stepped off the bus. MacKenzie awkwardly smiles at the team and then catches Nathan out the side of her eye. He’s staring at her as he walks down the step.
"Did you walk?" Nathan looks down at MacKenzie puzzled.
"Well, hello. Nice game. And yes. Just two blocks." MacKenzie pulls at her loose curl and then slides her finger down her messenger bag.
"Ready for dinner? I see you brought your work." Nathan taps her bag with his knuckle. MacKenzie nods and follows Nathan into the hotel. She awkwardly stops and he realizes it. “Whatcha doin’ there?” Nate walked back so he was standing in front of Kenzie.
“Isn’t the restaurant that way?” She points in the direction of the sign she stopped next to.
“Yes but they deliver to the room and I’d rather change into sweats and let you work in comfort.” He pulls at his tie. “Less eyes too. Come on.” Nathan placed his hand briefly on MacKenzie’s lower back to lead her to the elevator.
“I normally take the stairs.” MacKenzie looks around Nate for the steps.
“My room is on floor 12 and I just had over 20 minutes of ice time. Can we please take the elevator?” Nathan looked into MacKenzie’s questioning eyes.
“Fine. You have a point.” She smiles but gets lost calculating if that time is high or low for him.
They make their way to Nathan’s room. MacKenzie is surprised how nice it is. She’s not sure what she expected but it wasn’t this. Nathan’s suits neatly hanging up. Sweats sitting in his open luggage next to the closet. She realizes he hasn’t moved from behind her.
“Everything okay?” He moves to grab a pair of shorts and shirt.
“Yeah. Just not what I was expecting. You literally live out of suitcase don’t ya?” She watches him take off his suit coat and gulps at how his shirt is sticking to him.
“Some trips it feels like that. This one we won’t be home until the 26th… then a home stand with a few games on the road… and I’m boring you. Set up wherever you want and I’m gonna go change then will be right back.” He heads to the bathroom shut the door softly.
MacKenzie stares at the uncomfortable looking desk chair in a moment of indecision wanting to be set up so she’s working when Nate returns, she decides the bed was a better option for her to sit. Getting out her laptop Kenzie starts typing as soon as she hears Nate opening the door. He smirks when he sees Kenzie on the bed and moves to the desk to find the menu. She cannot help watching him. His muscles easily seen in the shirt and shorts he picked. He hikes up his pant leg exposing his thigh. Kenzie coughs focusing back on her work again.
"Here it is." Nathan turns around and walks towards MacKenzie handing her the menu. She stares at the menu then her finger lands on a cheeseburger and fries. Nathan moves to the other side of the bed, sitting to call in the order. He hangs up and starts to move.
"You can stay here. That chair is horrible looking." MacKenzie looks over at Nathan and he stops moving then looks down at his feet before swinging them up and adjusting to sit on the bed.
"Thanks." He looks over at her screen. "So what exactly do you do?"
"Simple description... I am a social media consultant." MacKenzie giggles. "Speaking of... your social media..." "Is non-existent." Nathan finishes her statement.
"Yeah, only two posts. That’s shocking for someone your age. Nate, do you know how you could amplify your earnings post career?" MacKenzie moves her computer and shift so look at him. He rubs the back of his neck and rotates on his hip to look at her better.
"Yeah. No, yeah. I get it. Just not my thing but you looked at my socials?" He bites his lip.
"I did after we ran into you at the bar post-game. Would've felt funny giving you my number if you had a girlfriend." MacKenzie admits.
"No girlfriend. So did you say you watched the game?" Nate changes the subject which Kenzie made a mental note of.
"Background noise while working. You can turn the tv on now or just talk to me. You scored." Kenzie looks over at Nathan.
"Empty netter but yeah. Nice win." Nathan says softly. The knock on the door stops their conversation. "Oh, dinner!" Nathan pops up and answers the door.
Dinner was delicious. The two shared backgrounds such as where they were from, college for MacKenzie, boarding school and early days of hockey for Nathan. They were laughing at each other's stories which lead to both laying on their stomachs watching a video for MacKenzie's work on her laptop.
"Kenz... Kenzie. Wake up!" Nathan whispers and MacKenzie's groggy self pops up and lands on Nathan's naked torso.
"Holy fuck!" She yells out. Nathan's hands steady her.
"Hey." Nathan backs up and bends to look her in face. Panic written all over her face. "You okay? We fell asleep talking." He looks at her.
"Why didn't you wake me? What time is it? Fuck. Sorry. I'm on a schedule." MacKenzie pulls away and looks for her bag realizing Nathan plugged her computer in at some point.
"It's 6:30. We just slept. I sleep shirtless and, uh, must've taken it off in my sleep. Sorry, should've put in on before I woke you. Hold on." Nathan moves to the other side of the bed and throws his shirt back on. "Let me call you an uber." He grabs his phone.
"I can walk. I don't have a meeting until noon so I'm fine. Thank you." MacKenzie points to the bathroom and Nathan nods.
She stands in front of the mirror for way too long just looking at herself. Pinches her cheeks and starts ranking her fingers through their loose blonde curls making them manageable enough to put up in a high ponytail. She grabs Nathan’s toothpaste and brushes her teeth with her finger.
“Well, Mac. This will have to do.” She bobs on the balls of her feet to psych herself up. Returning to the room she notices that Nathan had changed and slipped on some shoes. “Whatcha doin’ Nate?”
“I’ll walk with you. I wanted to grab coffee from down the street before we leave for the airport.” He grabs his wallet.
“You don’t have to.” Kenzie whispers as she heads to her bag.
“I don’t, but I wanna.” Nate smiles at her. She notices those soft eyes again. Almost gray but then again blue.
They head out of room to the steps. MacKenzie took a deep breath not realizing she was holding it until they got to the door.
“Why good morning you two!” Gabe’s voice comes from around the corner with a bag and coffee in hand.
“Mornin’” Nate answers and pushes the cross walk button.
“Glad to see you Kenzie.” Gabe nods and starts whistling while heading back to the hotel.
“Don’t mind him.” Nate breaks the silence after crossing the street.
“I’m assuming he’s thinking you got lucky last night.” MacKenzie tries to control her racing heart.
“I’ll talk to him.” Nathan assures her. She stops and looks up at him.
“Did you want to?” She puts her hand on her head not sure she really said it out loud.
“What?” Nathan stops and looks at her confused.
“Did you want to sleep with me?” She looks to see if anyone could hear her.
“No. Well… damnit. Hi. Let me start over.” Nathan looks deep in her eyes and cups her face.
“Go ahead.” She’s not sure if the words actually could be heard or not.
“I like you. You are easy to talk to. In the short time I’ve known you I’m constantly wanting to know more. I’m just bad at dating.”
“Why do you say that?” She moves closer to him without thinking.
“I’m not romantic. Plus my job isn’t the easiest for most of the year to maintain a healthy relationship. Plus, there is those who just want me for what I could give them.” He drops his hand to her hip. She sees his chest rise and fall.
“Who says you aren’t romantic?” MacKenzie questions.
“Every girl I’ve dated.” Nathan grumbles. This makes Kenzie laugh. “Well, they have.”
“I like you too, Nate. You intrigue me.” She feels the heat in her cheeks.
“So to answer your original question, yes. I would very much like to be physical with you but I also want to date you. Like not to fuck it up by…” She stops him by pushing herself to her tip toes to softly kiss his cheek.
“Well, saying all that is a start in how not to fuck it up.” She smiles at him. “Let’s get me back to my hotel then we can visit this whole dating thing when you return to Denver.” She starts walking and he quickly grabs her hand to walk with her.
“Here we are.” He stops at the doors of her hotel. “So, I’ll see you in two weeks, Kenzie.” Nathan drags out the two while contorting his face.
“It’s not that long plus you will be busy and I have this plus another project to finish before then.” She rubs the back of his hand with her thumb realizing how large his hand was in comparison which could crush her hand if he wanted. “Thanks for dinner Nate.”
“Can I?” He starts and gulps. MacKenzie watches his Adam’s apple bob. “Can I kiss you?” He asks with a quiver in his voice. She nods her head yes. Nate brings his hands up to her jaw holding her face up while he leans in pressing his lips to hers. Kenzie kisses him back and cannot remember a first kiss quiet like that. He releases while sucking in a deep breath.
“I…” Kenzie touches her lips.
“Well, see you soon Kenzie.” He kisses her forehead then turns quickly to head back down the street leaving Kenzie wanting more.

Luz’s mother really doesn’t want to send Luz to camp. She knows once she leaves, there is no going back. But Luz has a knack for getting into trouble, and one day she stumbles into the same type of people her mother would have preferred she avoided. After helping Luz dissolve her high school bully into dust, Eda and Lilith know right away that this kid is just like them - a child of the gods. So Luz hops on a Pegasus and heads to Camp Half-blood, where she embarks on a dangerous quest that makes her both friends and enemies... and she might even save Olympus along the way.
Chapter Twenty-Five: Willow Talks Us Into Trying Strategy Four
Tracking the sow was the easy part. Figuring out how to kill it without getting speared by the one non-severed tusk? Luz was slowly realizing that part was going to be a lot harder.
They’d left Demophon’s farmhouse, traveling down the path the Crommyonian Sow had fled through. It left huge tracks everywhere it went, so they were able to catch up to it multiple times. But the sow was clearly smarter than it looked. Every time it realized it was outnumbered, it would flee, leaving Luz and her friends chasing after it. After multiple attempts, they’d eventually been able to corner it by a little creek where it stopped for water.
Unfortunately, Luz had not been quick enough when she charged, her legs still sore and exhausted from the hike, and when the sow charged it slammed into her, sending her sailing into the creek.
It probably would have speared her right through with its tusk if Willow and Amity hadn’t gotten it to turn at the last second. Luz was alive, but now she was soaking wet and horribly uncomfortable.
Once the sow realized it was once again outnumbered, it fled, and Luz had been helped out of the water by Gus. She stood on the bank shivering, turning Aletheia back into a ring and looking at her friends in despair.
“How are we supposed to kill this thing if it keeps running?”
“We need a concrete plan,” Gus said, but he was looking just as winded as Luz felt. “The Crommyonian Sow was notorious for running until the hunters were too weak to keep chasing it. It would retaliate the second they stopped to rest.”
“That’s it! That’s our strategy right there,” Willow said, turning to look at Gus. Her face split into an eager smile. She sheathed her kopis, glancing to the tree behind them. She hummed, scanning it for a moment before nodding. “Luz, Amity, go sit in that tree.”
Luz’s legs were already protesting. “You want me to do what?”
“Relax, I’ll get you up there,” Willow chuckled, walking over to one of the bushes underneath it. She closed her eyes, curling her hand and pulling the thick roots of the bush downward, collecting them in a pile before twisting her hands and intertwining them together. When she finished and opened her eyes, Luz realized she’d somehow made a flat surface out of literal branches.
Willow really was something else.
“Get on, quickly!” Willow said, and Luz’s eyebrows lifted. It wasn’t that she didn’t trust Willow, she trusted her with her life, but that definitely didn’t look like it would be able to hold both her and Amity’s weight.
“I can’t hold it for long, hurry!” Willow insisted, and Luz was snapped back to reality when Amity grabbed her hand and dragged her to the bushes.
“Come on, Luz!”
She was dragged over to the bush, and Amity was the first to step on it. It seemed to wrap around her ankles, stopping her from sinking. When Luz stepped on it next, it morphed around her weight, and she was surprised by how solid it felt.
“Ok, up you go!”
Willow raised her hands, and the bush rose up, allowing Luz and Amity to reach out and climb onto the thick double branch extending from the stump of the huge tree. The two of them got comfortable as Willow lowered the bush and returned it back to how it looked before. Luz and Amity’s feet were dangling off the side, the second extending branch resting almost like a backrest behind Luz and Amity’s shoulder blades.
Luz had climbed trees before, so she wasn’t exactly frightened of heights, and the branch was only about eight feet off the ground. But she noticed that Amity was clenching the branch of the tree tightly between her hands.
“Are you okay?” Luz asked gently, reaching over with one hand to rest it comfortingly on her shoulder. Amity grit her teeth and nodded.
“Yeah, just give me a second to adjust…” she mumbled, and Luz nodded, turning back to Willow and Gus on the ground. Gus had popped his tent in a can, but it was clearly only for show. Willow was sitting just outside the entrance to the tent, her knees propped against her chest.
“So, what exactly is the plan here?” Luz called, and Willow chuckled, looking up at Luz affectionately.
“Capture the Flag strategy 4,” she said, and Luz’s eyes widened.
“Oh!”
Willow lifted a finger to her lips, and Luz got the message. Keep quiet.
Strategy 4 was something that the three of them had been working on for the game the week after they left for their quest. Gus, being smaller than Luz and Willow, was going to stand in the open and wait to be attacked by another camper. Then, Luz and Willow would leap out from their hiding place and disarm the camper, taking them as their prisoner. Gus reckoned they could have taken out a sixth of the enemy campers by the time the game was done.
Now, the Crommyonian Sow would be their enemy camper.
Willow and Gus got comfortable, leaving Luz and Amity sitting up in the tree waiting. Luz distracted herself with the sounds of the birds in the trees before sunset and the colors of the summer forest around them. At some point when Luz looked down at her other friends, she thought Gus might actually be sleeping, leaning against Willow’s shoulder as the pair leaned against one of the rocks in the clearing.
It was peaceful, and Luz had no idea what to do with herself. She fidgeted nervously, not really realizing she was doing it until Amity caught her gaze and frowned.
“Luz?” She said quietly, and it was Luz’s turn now to jump. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah, of course,” Luz said quickly, doing her best to keep her voice down. “I’m just… thinking I guess. It’s almost dark, which means we have less than a day to find Hestia and save her.”
“We have enough time,” Amity insisted, reaching over and touching her hand. Luz felt her body relax at the touch. “We’re less than three hours out of the mountain now. Once we kill the sow, we can get some rest and make it before the afternoon tomorrow. We have too.”
“You especially,” Luz added, and the uncomfortable swirling in her belly was starting to return. “I feel like I missed something back at Demophon’s. You… made a promise and something weird happened.”
“I swore on the River Styx,” Amity explained, her face twisting with an expression Luz couldn’t read. “It’s… one of the biggest promises you can make in our world. It’s an oath that can’t be broken, by either mortals or gods.”
Luz had a very bad feeling about what Amity was implying, and she swallowed. “So… when you promised to free Hestia…”
“I can’t back out,” Amity said, confirming Luz’s worries. She bit her lower lip, and Luz felt another terrible sinking feeling in her stomach. “I have an obligation now.”
“Why would you do that?” Luz asked, shaking her head. It seemed like a big risk for Amity to make on the fly, especially since they’d only just met Demophon.
Amity fidgeted like she wasn’t sure how to answer. She eventually just sighed, tearing her gaze away from Luz and towards the slowly sinking sun setting behind the trees.
“It’s not like I’m not already trapped. I’m stuck in this prophecy with you whether I like it or not.” She suddenly turned her head, her eyes wide. “Not that I don’t like that we’re in a prophecy together, it’s just that in general they kind of suck, and-”
“I get it,” Luz quickly interrupted, though it was impossible not to keep the blush off her face when Amity cleared her throat and started again.
“Anyway… what I meant is that deep down I already know that this is what I have to do. So what difference does it make to swear it? It was worth it, just to see the look on Demophon’s face when I did.”
Luz remembered it. The glittering in his eyes, the way his shoulders rose. The way it had inspired Willow and Gus in a way Luz’s speeches sometimes did. She remembered her dreams, and all the times Hestia would stand firm, and not give into Belos. She remembered the times she’d looked in Luz’s eyes, and reminded her why she was on this quest to begin with. Why Hestia still had the strength to keep fighting against Belos.
Hope remains, and so I remain.
Amity gave Demophon hope. And that to her was worth the consequences of an eternal oath. It was the most selfless thing Luz had ever seen.
The fluttering in Luz’s stomach got worse, but she knew this time it wasn’t from nervousness. It was something else entirely, and it shot right up in Luz’s stomach to her chest, ringing in her ears.
Luz had never wanted to get closer to anybody in her entire life. Something on Luz’s face must have changed because suddenly Amity was blushing so brightly it went all the way to her ears.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” Amity breathed out, and Luz’s gaze flickered up from her lips to her eyes. It was then that she actually realized that she’d been looking at Amity’s lips. How long had she been staring at her lips?
Luz’s mouth felt dry, and despite the blush creeping up her face, she kept her eyes locked with Amity’s.
“I just think you’re amazing.”
Amity clearly hadn’t been expecting that. Her blush was now taking on a purple color, and her mouth opened and closed like she was trying to figure out what to say.
Luz didn’t want her to say anything at all.
She leaned in, closing the gap between them, and kissed Amity.
The first thing Luz noticed was how soft Amity’s lips were. They fit right between her own as her eyes fluttered shut, and for half a second it was all Luz could focus on. But then Amity made a surprised little sound in the back of her throat, and for a moment Luz panicked, ready to pull away.
She didn’t need to. Amity’s surprise quickly faded, and Luz felt her left hand slide up to Luz’s face, her thumb gently pressing against the line of Luz’s jaw as she returned the kiss. Luz’s heart hammered in her chest as the pressure from Amity’s own lips increased, and Luz reached forward to gently steady Amity from her position in the tree. It slipped around her waist, and then there was nothing but Amity.
Just Amity’s hands on her face, and her lips on Luz’s. The smell of lavender and mint despite the hours of hiking, and the feel of Amity’s waist under her hand. She wanted to get closer, and she probably would have if leaning any closer wouldn’t have resulted in her falling out of the tree. So she settled for wrapping her arm as far around her waist as she could, inching Amity closer to her.
The hand on Luz’s face slid down to the back of her neck as their position shifted, and Amity changed the angle of the kiss, somehow managing to get impossibly close to Luz despite the awkward position. Luz’s brain short-circuited, unable to do anything but just kiss her back.
Eventually, Luz had to pull away just to take a breath. Her eyes opened, and she saw Amity looking back at her. Her gold eyes had darkened, and she was just as out of breath as Luz, her lips parted as she took in quick breaths.
She looked beautiful.
Luz felt herself begin to smile, unable to control herself. She had just kissed Amity Blight.
And when she saw Amity’s lips pull into a smile of her own, she wanted to do it again.
Luz might have done it. She might have leaned back in again and kissed her harder, and try her best to repeat what was probably the best moment of her entire life.
But obviously, she was still a half-blood. She was never going to get that lucky.
“RHEEEEEEEE!!!!”
The noise itself startled Luz so badly she would have fallen out of the tree if Amity hadn’t reacted fast and wrapped her arm around Luz’s stomach. The Crommyonian Sow came sprinting through the trees and barreling towards Willow and Gus, mouth open, eyes glinting murderously. Willow hadn’t leaped into action and dove out of the way with Gus, and the sow charged right through them, barely missing.
They scrambled to their feet, weapons drawn. The sow huffed furiously, its eyes bearing down at them and shifting back and forth as they got closer and closer. Amity touched her bracelet and drew Dikē.
“It’s going to run,” Amity whispered, her eyes widening in horror.
Gus, thank the gods, seemed to put two and two together. With an angry yell, he charged on the sows left, sending it into a startled backpedal towards the tree Luz and Amity were waiting on. Luz and Amity tensed, waiting for just the right moment.
“On three,” Amity whispered, slowly pulling her sword from her belt. Luz nodded and reached over, her hand hovering over Aletheia.
“One,” she said as the monster took two steps back.
“Two,” the sow turned tail, realizing it had been tricked.
“Three!”
Luz and Amity leaped off the branch, and Luz’s knife appeared in her hands. With a ferocious scream, Luz spun the knife downwards, landing on the sows back and digging the blade right into its neck. Next to her, Amity hit the ground gracefully, stabbing her sword right into its side.
The Crommyonian Sow screamed in pain and dissolved into dust, and Luz landed with a thump on a pile of it, still clutching her knife in her hands.
“Alright!” Gus whooped, throwing his spear up into the air in delight. Willow sighed in relief, sheathing her own sword and shaking her head fondly at Gus’ excitement.
Luz exhaled, brushing dirt off her shorts while turning her knife back into a ring. She heard footsteps from behind her and turned her head to see Amity walking up. She had sheathed her xiphos and extended the hand not wrapped around her shield. There was a deep blush on her face, and Luz was suddenly reminded of what had happened right before the sow burst through the clearing.
She was feeling a lot less brave now.
When she took her hand and let Amity pull her to her feet, she hoped the red on her face wasn’t too obvious.
“Thanks,” she said awkwardly, and Amity cleared her throat.
“Uh, no problem.”
“Guys!”
Luz’s attention flickered back to Gus, and she couldn’t help but feel slightly relieved at the interruption. That kiss was still lingering in the back of her brain, and she knew that if she thought too hard on it right now she wouldn’t be able to focus on anything else.
She had kissed Amity.
Gus had retracted his shield back into a watch, and he reached under his button up to clip the spear to his belt. “That was awesome! We have got to use that during capture the flag.”
“That was really dangerous, Luz,” Willow chimed in, narrowing her eyes disapprovingly at her. “You could have hurt yourself jumping on its back.”
“It just felt like the best way to do it,” Luz said with a shrug. While the landing hadn’t exactly been pleasant, her legs didn’t hurt now any more than they had during the hike.
“You did the same thing you did with the Mino- er, Pasiphae’s son,” Gus added, holding out his hand for Luz to high five. “You’ve got a signature move!”
“A really dangerous one,” Amity muttered, and when Luz looked over at her she was looking just as disapproving as Willow had.
“A signature move is a signature move,” Luz shrugged, but she was unable to keep the grin off her face. “It’s not fun if it’s not dangerous.”
Amity sighed, but even though she was shaking her head Luz could see that Amity’s eyes had softened affectionately. The swirling in her stomach returned. “You’re impossible.”
“We should probably rest for the night,” Willow said, and when Luz turned to look at her she had this confused furrow in her brow. Her gaze flickered back and forth between Luz and Amity, and she saw Amity clear her throat and look away. “It’s almost dark, and we won’t be able to see a thing anyway. This will probably be our last chance to get any kind of rest before tomorrow.”
“Alright!” Luz said, unable to keep the excitement out of her voice. She turned and started walking towards the tent, already on board. “I can’t wait to actually get some rest, my legs feel like they’re going to fall off.”
But of course, whenever a demigod thinks they can expect what happens next, something changes. Luz didn’t even make it halfway to the tent before the first arrow flew, scraping past Luz’s ear and landing with a thunk in the tree behind the tent.
Luz spun quickly, drawing the sword version of Aletheia, doing her best to cover herself, but then another arrow went flying past her thigh and managed to graze it. Her leg exploded in pain, and she gritted her teeth to try and keep her vision from spotting out. Gods that arrow hurt.
She stumbled back to her friends, who were all standing there, weapons drawn and ready, eyeing the trees from where the arrow had come. But no more arrows flew, and instead, the forest was eerily quiet.
Luz fought to control her breath, doing her best not to look down at her thigh. A gasp of pain came out of her throat as she fought to control herself, but with every second that passed, the wound just seemed to get more painful. There was now numbness crawling up her leg and into her hip, and she was unable to stop the next cry of pain, dropping to her side on the ground and clutching at it.
“Luz!” Amity exclaimed, kneeling down next to her. Her eyes widened as she took in Luz’s leg, and she turned to look out at the forest.
“Who’s there? Show yourself!”
It was quiet for another second before a group of figures walked out of the trees. Luz’s vision was going blurry, but she was pretty sure there were twelve of them, and they were all clutching bows. The closer Luz looked, the quicker she realized there was no way they were human. Well, at least not from the waist down.
Considering they had the lower half of a horse, Luz was almost positive that they’d been tracked down by the centaurs of Mount Pelion.

Slumber Party... OF DOOM!
So. Here is my submission for @johnnysfire ‘s TOH Prompt challenge. For anyone who doesn’t know the prompt chosen was “Evil.”
I asked my lovely friends from discord whether I should go emotional or lighthearted with this and they said lighthearted, so here we are. It was actually really really fun to take a topic like evil and twist it to something fun and hopefully fluffy. I had to keep a lot of things shorter then what I would’ve liked to meet the word count (spoiler alert, I still went a little over), so one day I do plan on fixing this up and making it an actual one shot, detailing the game and everything. Until then, enjoy the read! My idea going in?
Haunted Boardgame:
(EDIT: Um so Tumblr ate and spat out some paragraphs at random the first time I posted... so hopefully everything is in its correct order. Yikes.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Pillows?"
"Check."
"Blankets."
"Check!"
"Hot chocolate?"
3 sets of eyes turned to the green-haired witch sitting in the corner. Amity Blight was currently too busy staring at the glow that inexplicably seemed to surround Luz as she sounded off the ingredients for her perfect 'Slumber Party' to notice her companions all staring at her.
"..."
Amity's eyes shifted only slightly to the left as her ear twitched, finally noticing the silence and the fact that everyone was staring at her.
Wait.
Everyone was staring at her.
"Oh um..." Amity looked around panicked, flushing red as she realized she had completely zoned out. She quickly analyzed the scene. Willow had wrapped a fluffy blanket around herself as Gus clutched a pillow excitedly to his chest.
Right. The checklist. Refusing to look at Luz (to avoid any further embarrassment or lapses in attention), Amity quickly reached out and snatched her sound-off item. Only barely remembering what it was at the last moment, Amity somehow saved herself from the splash of scalding liquid that flew out of her mug.
"Hot chocolate, acquired!" She grinned forcibly and altogether too nervously.
Finally risking a glance up to her crush she realized that Luz was giggling, the human's eyes closed as she snicked softly against her hands.
Amity's ears pressed flat against her head as Willow chuckled to her left.
"Well that would be Amity for 'check.'" The plant witch giggled, shifting her body to face Luz excitedly. "So. What happens now?"
"Yes, what new human traditions are you going to show us? I'm so excited!!" Gus squeaked happily, crushing the pillow in arms.
Luz grinned. "Just a little more patience my friend. We've got to start this off correctly. So… if everyone would grab their cocoa, probably a little more gentler then Amity over there, then I'll begin the toast to make this the best slumber party ev-"
THUMP THUMP
Luz stopped short as all those in attendance whipped around to face the door. Amity was finally able to unhunch her shoulders and stare with the rest of her friends at the mysterious knock at the door. The human was inquisitive herself.
"Luz, I thought you said there was supposed to be no one home tonight?" Amity questioned her curiously, cocking her head slightly to the side.
Luz's brow furrowed as she got up.
"There isn't anyone home tonight."
The entire room seemed to hold it's breath as Luz approached the door and pausing for what had to be dramatic effect, opened it sharply.
"HAH! GOT YOU… absolutely nothing…"
Amity peered around Luz's body to see exactly what was going on only to be met with the same sight and disappointment. An empty hallway.
Glancing both ways in the doorframe, the human shrugged nonchalantly as she went to close the door.
"Wait!" Gus cried from behind all of them. Flinging the pillow away from him and into Willow's stomach, he jumped up and dived underneath Luz to swipe something up from the ground.
Holding it proudly over his head both him and Luz marched back into the room, the bedroom door closing softly behind them. Willow and Amity leaned in close as Gus dropped the mysterious object to the ground with a soft and dramatic thump.
"What… is it?" Willow asked curiously, inspecting what looked to be a black rectangular box that lay before them.
"Is this part of the slumber party?" Gus asked curiously as Luz picked up the box and gave it a small shake.
"Not that I'm aware of. Let's open it!" The human said excitably, turning the box over to rip it open.
"Wait!" Amity yelped, grabbing Luz by the arm to stop her. Realizing what she was doing, Amity immediately dropped the contact, blushing profusely as she pointed to a small piece of paper that had fluttered to the ground.
"A note!!" Luz's eyes twinkled, causing the blushing witch to somehow go even redder. "Amity, you should read it for us!"
"What?!" Amity choked in surprise. "Why me?!"
"You found it! Besides you have a nice voice!" Luz explained casually, shaking the box slightly and holding it up to her ear.
Amity found it difficult to breathe as she shakily grabbed the note and held it in front of her, Willow and Gus scooting forward in excitement. Trying to ignore the thundering of her heartbeat in her chest and the full attention of the room, Amity glanced down at the note.
"Dear Sleeping Party attendants! You have been called upon to vanquish the evil from within this board! Inside you'll find what seems to be a normal board game, but is actually a prison for a very powerful and evil spirit! The only way to keep it's villainy contained is to play and win the game. The world is counting on you. Good luck! Mwehehehehehe."
Amity frowned and reread the note to herself. The world? That seemed farfetched to say the least. Where did this box even come from? Who sent it to them? Looking up Amity saw the stars dancing in Luz's eyes. Her crush was sold. Gus was practically buzzing beside her.
"I've heard of objects that could be bound with spirits before, but never like this!" He babbled excitedly.
"I have! You know how many human stories are filled with things like this? How long I've been wanting to do this?!" Luz grinned, finally figuring out how to open the box.
As the top lid slid off, a cheap and busted old board fell to the ground with a cloud of dust. Flipping the box over, a pile of cards, dice and one rather large hour glass spilled out as Luz gave it one final shake. Willow automatically went to organize everything and flipping the board over Amity saw a long and complicated maze pattern. The entire board seemed to be black, with the path cutting along through it a dull, brownish red. It seemed like each square had one of 3 icons sprinkled randomly throughout. In the very, very center of the board there was some sort of design. Amity reached forward and brushed the dust and dirt away from it as Luz and Gus talked excitedly above her.
The chatter quickly faded as everyone's eyes slid to the symbol that Amity had just uncovered. It was carved into the board itself, the deep grooves of the design painted in a faded and chipped white. Luz stared curiously while Gus, Willow and Amity all exchanged a concerned look. The design was simple, a small circle, with 4 tight loops surrounding it in all 4 cardinal directions, connecting in a diamond pattern in the very center of the circle.
The Witch's Knot.
Luz looked up at the plant witch curiously, one eyebrow raised as Amity swallowed the lump that was quickly growing in her throat.
"Oooh. That's elegant." Luz cooed.
"It's not elegant Luz…" Willow breathed quietly.
"That's," Amity pointed at the symbol, "a witch's knot. It's a symbol used to ward off evil."
Luz turned her head down to the board game and nodded. "Oh I get it, because of the evviiiilll theme this game has going on right?" She chuckled lightheartedly. When no one responded in kind, the human became quiet, her grin slowly slipping off her face.
"No. You don't understand. The Witch's Knot isn't just some superstition or tradition. In the Boiling Isles it had been used as a spell, carved to literally seal away evil. It hasn't been used in centuries though." Amity explained further, staring at the ancient white symbol. A cold feeling crept up her back.
Maybe there really was something to this game.
"Well, that makes what I'm about to say next, something that I have wanted to say forever by the way, a little more somber…" Luz gulped as she grabbed the dice Willow had set aside. The human tossed them into the air, and as they all watched the cubes crash down, she spoke again.
"Let the game… begin."
***
Despite the incredibly dramatic and powerful gesture, Luz had no idea how to play the game, none of them did. Luckily for the companions, Willow eventually found the directions taped to the inside lid of the box Luz had tossed aside. They were scribbled out in child-like handwriting but they were detailed enough to understand:
- Rolling the dice will move your character that many steps forward. On the board there are 3 different symbols. These represent your obstacles, fail to complete them and you lose your life. The only way to reverse this death is for a living player to revive you by taking a detour off the fastest route. Be warned, choosing this path will waste precious time and you will be risking your own life. You may only revive one player per game.
- Each player must choose a small token to represent themselves on the board. You will work together with those around you to overcome each obstacle in your path to the sigil. The goal is to reach the end with at least one player still standing to revive the The Witch's Knot protecting us from the evil.
- You may not begin the game until you have flipped the hour glass. If the last grain drains from the timer and you have not reached the end, evil will be unleashed.
-The Board itself is enchanted to tell if the players are worthy. It will be the judge and jury for the challenges you complete.
[ ~ ] Draw a blue card and cast the correct type of magic listed on it at the board. If you fail to cast the correct spell you lose your life.
Below are the symbols you will encounter on your quest:
[ + ] Draw a pink card and complete the challenge listed upon it. If you fail to meet this challenge you lose your life.
[ * ] Draw a green card. Answer the question on it correctly to move forward. If you get it wrong you lose your life.
Now having read through the rules, everyone seemed a lot more hesitant to start.
- When your token reaches the end, the correct lines to reseal the evil will appear. Read them aloud in a strong and clear voice.
"This seems like a bad idea." Amity echoed the thoughts of everyone in the room. Her amber eyes flicked up and caught Luz's warm brown ones. The human gave her a shaky smile.
"Come on Ami," Amity had to remind herself to keep breathing at the idea of her nickname. "It will be fun. Besides… I'm not exactly itching to find out what happens if we don't play." The human admitted quietly. Taking a deep breath, she grabbed the dice.
They had all chose board pieces to represent themselves from Luz's large collection of knickknacks. Luz was a small figure of Azura while Amity was Hecate. Gus found himself a tiny rubber chameleon toy while Willow fittingly found a small plastic flower. Each kid seemed to fidget with their tokens as Luz looked at them each in turn. Nodding, the human set her figure down on the start square. Immediately a buzzing sound filled the room and the dull red path illuminated itself. The symbols now glowed their respective card color.
"Well. That seems ominous." Luz laughed nervously, her eyes growing wide as the light from the path traveled towards the Witch's Knot, as it reached the chipped white paint, the symbol flashed, changing it's paint to a bright angry red. "Scratch that. That is just ominous. Is my soul about to be consumed? Did I just sell my soul to a board game?"
Willow set her piece down next, a small ring of light forming around it as the board recognized yet another player.
"Well, I wasn't really using my soul for anything important at the moment. Let's do this." The plant witch grinned and Amity watched as Luz's confidence swiftly returned.
Gus whooped and set his own piece on the board earning him a wide smile from both of his friends. Soon all sets of eyes drifted to Amity who was staring down at the note that had been originally taped to the box. She couldn't shake the horrible suspicion that someone was setting them up. Looking down at the now glowing and obviously magic board, it was clear they were already too far into the trap to back out now. Taking a deep breath she placed Hecate down right next to Azura.
"Alright. Let's do this." Amity nodded, swiftly grabbing the hour glass sitting next to her. "Is uh, everyone ready?"
"Oooh! Can I say it? Amity pleaaaseeee?" Luz jumped in suddenly, startling the green-haired witch into nearly dropping the time piece. Resetting her heartbeat, Amity handed the hourglass to Luz who grinned widely.
"Alright. This time for real. Let the game begin." The human announced as she flipped it and begun their countdown.
The dice magically floated over to Luz as soon as the first grain of sand hit the bottom of the glass. It was clear who was going first. Tossing them out in front of her Luz rolled a 3 and 5. As she reached to move her figure, it zoomed away from her hand, darting forward 8 spaces by itself. The symbol beneath it glowed a bright pink. A challenge space.
Luz grabbed a card, and the race against time began.
Gus was the first to die, his token being swallowed by the board itself after he lost his balance 2 seconds into a 5 second handstand.
Amity was the next to lose to the game. Her concentration on a fireball spell having been completely shattered by Luz's supportive hand laying on her shoulder. Amity knew it wasn't her simply being startled like Luz apologized profusely for, but there was NO way she would be explaining that today. Not over a stupid board game at least. Fate of the world or not.
Luz and Willow were about 3/4th through the path leading to the sigil when just a few spaces ahead the path split in two. Written in very faint lettering was the words: "Forest of Revival" by the detour path. Looking down it, the companions saw every single square through the 'forest' was lined with knowledge cards. The path itself eventually weaved back to the sigil, but was easily twice as long and packed with symbols.
If they wanted to revive someone it would be a struggle. Deciding to move forward Willow rolled her dice and landed on a spell square.
"Summon a small abomination to pick up your token off the board."
The group fell silent. Willow had never been good at abominations. She slumped in defeat.
Amity had to speak up, the painful memory of her teasing hanging over the entire room.
"You've got this." She said quietly, looking anywhere but Willow.
Luz's eyes flicked worriedly towards Amity, before they turned back to Willow.
"Amity's right. I've seen you do much cooler then a little abomination." Luz cheered helpfully.
"Thanks you two, but I think we both know what happens now." Willow admitted holding a hand up and drawing a pristine circle.
The resulting pile of barely sentient goop unsurprisingly earned a negative reaction from the board and Willow's token disappeared.
Luz wasted no time grabbing the dice for the next turn. They only had about 20 minutes left.
"I'm going to revive someone." She announced, rolling the dice and moving her token into the empty space before the forest.
"Wait, Luz! The forest is full of knowledge checks. Chances are you're going to get something you haven't learned yet. And we won't be able to help you." Amity spoke up quickly.
"Yeah, well you can't really help me if you all are dead right? Look. I'll be fine. There's 12 spaces to the revive square. If I roll double sixes, I'm there."
"That's a pretty big IF Luz..." Willow said worriedly, glancing over at the hourglass.
Turns out they didn't have to be worried at all. As double sixes appeared on the dice, Azura shot forward safely through the forest and landed directly on the revive square.
"I'm reviving Amity." Luz announced decisively as the square began to glow a bright yellow and Hecate appeared beside Azura.
"Me? Why?"
"Because statistically you are the most obvious choice. Top Student and well versed in multiple different magic tracks." Gus nodded, tapping his chin thoughtfully. "Good choice Luz!"
Willow merely looked away in shame and Amity felt guilt twist at her heart.
"Well that's not exactly true, but I figure since all of us are always getting up to magic mischief that Amity should get to be a bigger part of this adventure. Plus, historically we have made a pretty good team." Luz beamed, somehow melting the tension of the entire room with her words.
She practically melted Amity face too as heat rushed to the witch’s cheeks at the compliment.
They resumed the game, getting further and further through the forest. As the sand ran down in the hour glass, Hecate and Azura inched closer towards the sigil and the evil within the board.
"1234...5...6... and 7. Nice! Just enough!!" Luz counted excitedly as the board moved her token into the final square before the Witch's Knot. She glanced worriedly at Amity who was still several spaces away and then at the hour glass with just a sliver of sand left.
They were running out of time.
Luckily the board seemed to recognize Luz's finish as a team victory and Hecate was pulled straight to the end, standing alongside her friend/rival Azura.
Two white cards appeared in front of Luz and Amity.
"Ok. So... now we just read whatever's on this card and the evil gets re-sealed?" Luz asked uncertainly, fidgeting with her card.
Amity simply stared at the white card still laying in front of her, dread building in her chest. If there was ever a time for the trap to spring... it would be now. Haunted objects like this often came with a curse, especially here in the Boiling Isles. The ancient symbol currently pulsating red in the center of the board reminded Amity that there was a chance that whatever 'evil' this board contained may be far too old and powerful to simply be sealed away by two witches in training...
"Yep. And hurry! There's not much time left!" Gus's panicked voice jolted Amity out of her thoughts. Taking a deep breath, Amity snatched the card up and flipped it over, almost completely in sync with Luz.
"To defeat the evil within in this board, I hereby announce that-" The two read off in unison.
"... King is the greatest of all time."
"... Luz is a buttface."
The entire room fell silent as the two finished the 'spell' causing the Witch's Knot in the middle to flash a bright, blinding blue before the entire board went dim.
From the doorway the companions could all hear a malicious cackling.
Amity turned around slowly, only to see the resident demon of the Owl House rolling around on his back, laughing.
"YOU SHOULD'VE SEEN YOUR FACES! Oooooh. Oh nooooo! The evil of the board is going to get usssss. Wheeeeheheehehe."
"King!!" Luz reprimanded angrily, but the smile on her face gave away her true feelings. "You know, if you wanted us to play a board game you made, you could've just asked!"
The little demon pushed himself off the floor and wiped his eyes. He walked to the center of the board and kicked over the hourglass, seconds away from running out of sand.
"Psssh. Like I'd want to be involved in your silly little 'Sleep Party' thing anyways. Not that I got an invite or anything..." King grumbled.
Amity felt bad for the little guy, even if the game had them all stressed over nothing, he just wanted to feel included. Reaching forward hesitantly, knowing she didn't have the best relationship with the demon, Amity gently scooped him into her arms and coddled him.
And to both of their surprise, The King of Demons let her.
"Besides, it's not my game anyways. I just wrote those last two cards." King continued, crossing his arms defiantly from his position in Amity's arms.
Luz frowned. "But if you didn't make it then... who did?"
"I don't know. Eda just had it laying around. I found it a couple of days ago and planned this spectacular and amazing prank to pull on you guys for not inviting me. And it workkkeedd! Hah!"
Amity tensed. Nobody knew who made it? A board this enchanted had to have been made by someone.
"No, that's not right. There has to be some sort of clue, right?" Luz frowned, looking around at her friends.
"I don't know, I didn't look." The demon king shrugged before stretching out and curling tightly into Amity's chest.
"Try flipping it over? Maybe there's a name or something. That's what my dad's always do to our stuff in case it gets lost." Willow suggested helpfully.
Everyone nodded as Luz tentatively reached over and flipped the board over. On the back, faintly scratched into the cheap cardboard, were two initials and a small inscription. They had found their answer.
L + E - Vanquishing evil together. Forever.
The End
