Dumb and perhaps unanswerable question but what's it like writing 3k+ words in a day? Even on my most productive days I can sit for 8 hours and do nothing but write obsessively without even stopping to eat but I only have like 1-2k words down when I finish. Obviously there's no wrong way to write blah blah blah but I don't get how even when the words are flowing for me they come at a fraction of my typing speed.

My aggressively worded, long ass OPINION is below the cut.

Ok, first, this is a Perceptive question. Your spotting a big and poorly communicated issue. It’s just embarrassing because everyone who gives advice games the system. We all end up looking like we do 10k an hour 10 hours a day 10 days a week. It’s not a good system. Most of us have actually figured that out. But we’re also not sure how to then get people to keep listening to us here when there is an infinitely nicer sounding lie over there. So we just kinda keep misrepresenting ourselves. It’s the social media effect.

Is it an unanswerable question though… mmm… halvsies. I was reminded recently of one of my more personally influential writing teachers, Eileen Workman, a wonderful, magnificently giving woman, who I have sadly not seen in forever. One of the best tidbits of wisdom I got from her was, while there are no 'right' answers, there are always a multitude of wrong ones. Now it’s easy because we writers are often a pretty negative lot, to focus on that last part. There are a huge number of wrong answers to any writing question. Oh, dear, how can you find what you need in that swamp. A little harder is to look at the first part and have that negative voice pop up in your head again, ‘There’s no right answer? So there’s no answer?” And no, that’s not what it means. It means there is no single, one and only, answer. But that’s very different. There are answers, there are answers that are right for YOU, and you get to pick and choose which answer or answers best fit your needs at this time. There is such a multitude of wrong answers precisely because the absolutely right answer for someone else can still be the absolutely wrong answer for you. I don’t know you or your work better than you do. So I can’t actually tell you what to do. Though I’m full of myself so I will try. All I can actually do is say this is what I know and this what I experience, and I hope they help you think about your similar problem.

Believe it or not, putting in my score of 4380 words that provoked this question in the nanowrimo website, I put that wobbly mouthed frowny face as my attitude toward it. For two reasons. The reason I wrote 4380 words is because I was behind, and I have now not completed that nano on time. And I am already a day behind on the official one. Which embarrasses me considering how many nanos I have “won”, it’s like being a marathon runner, signing up for the iron man, and not being able to clear the first mile. I not only should be able to do the work, I KNOW I can because I have done it many times before. And yet, I am having lots of trouble. Because I’m writing in this bang-bust cycle of nothing and then alot right now, my aim with the hope of hitting 5000 words.

And that’s the real answer for me. What does it feel like to write 3K+ words a day: an annoyance that I write so little and strong desire that I wrote 10K+ words a day instead. It’s not about how many words you write. I used to feel the same way about 5K. I used to feel the same way about 3K. Used to be 1K. It’s about how happy you are with your fulfillment of your own expectations.

Back in 2006, in graduate school on an entirely different continent from my birth for the purposes of a degree in the teaching and practice of creative writing, I was firm in what I thought was my reasonable expectation that I would shortly be a published author, that I would launch in a career in that, and could leverage that writing career into a teaching job at my alma mater, so I could teach all the little college brats like myself who wanted to become authors AND do it better than I felt I was taught myself. That was my expectation. And at low levels it still is my expectation.

Now, in 2020, with chronic pain, medicated for mental health issues that have landed me in the mental hospital twice, living 15 minutes from my alma mater where the one and only creative writing teacher is now one of my first teachers, who I have been holding a grudge against since 1992 because of how disgusted I am by the way he teaches, I am a little dissatisfied. He’s got the job I want and I’m not going to get it. And I hear about him teaching it all the time because I’m connected to the writing community here, and he is all there is. While I am teaching nobody. And have one short story and one self published novel to my name. I wrote the first draft of the sequel to my first novel, now more than six years ago and I’m pretty much giving up on it.

From the point of view of 2006, every time I produce something as pathetic as ONLY 3k+ words, it’s a slap in the face reminder of how little I have accomplished and how much I have failed in my life goals.

Which I don’t say to say, ‘Hey, feel sorry for me.’ That’s not the point. I say it because I suspect that this is an exaggeration of the same basic emotional tug of war that a tragic number of writers are going through. It is worth questioning do you have an equivalent of my 2006 expectations. It may not be as a big or dramatic. It may be as simple as ‘real writers write a novel every x amount of time by writing y amount of words every single day.’ And then what’s your reality? What are you actually living with? Was that part of your expectation? Can the number of words you are producing live up to that expectation? Will a higher number of words live up? How much higher? Are you sure it’s only that high?

Because my 2006 judgements and expectations, 10k an hour or whatever won’t cut it. Because the daily word count is what I am judging by. It is my measure. But what I’m trying to judge is only tangentially related to word count. My 2006 expectations are of a life I don’t have.

If I wrote a million words a day, it would just drive me nuts that I still wasn’t writing enough to make a difference. How much do I have to write? And I know that answer for myself, even if I usually look away. It is an impossible numer. It’s when you add every positive integer together and get -12. Because that’s what the impulse is really about, trying to get the life I expected of myself in 2006 when it’s 2020.

Is it the same for you? It may not be. We’re all different. But I wouldn’t be surprised if you had some expectation of being a “better” writer than you are already. Of being more “productive” than you are. Of already being an author. All those things are things you can’t ever write enough to fix. Because the word count is the wrong measure.

So, let’s take a step back. Farther back. In my aggressively held opinion, one of the best books on Creative Writing has nothing to do with Creative Writing. It’s called Start With Why by Simon Sinek. He’s got a Ted Talk that is essentially the same content, just less examples. His method is very simple. He calls it the golden circle. Three concentric rings. In the center circle is WHY. Why are you doing what you’re doing? In the middle circle around the why is HOW. How are you doing what you’re doing? In the outer ring is WHAT. What are you doing?

What you’re doing is writing. How you’re doing it is trying to hit a certain word count. Which may or may not be the way to go. Why you’re doing it… that’s usually real complicated. Took me years to figure out. Sinek’s critique is that most everything goes from the outermost ring inward. While in contrast, the most successful companies, which is his area of focus, go from the inside out.

You want to write a story. Cool. You’ll do that by writing to the point that you don’t eat and you don’t take any breaks and that will get you the biggest word count which will be the most amount of work in the time available. Because… You want to write a story. Which is cool. But it’s also a tautology.

Instead of that, I’d like to give you an example. Let’s take imaginary writer Bela. Bela hasn’t had a great life.

Bela believes that sharing her life story will help others who have suffered the same trials and tribulations but have no voice to speak it. She wants to speak in defense of those who can’t defend themselves. She wants to be the voice for the voiceless. That’s WHY she wants to writer her life story.

Ok, so HOW is Bela going to do that? Is she just going to scribble down her life story and then run down to the photocopy joint and spend her life savings on copies and then just jet around town tossing the manuscript copies out her window. We all know the answer is no. But WHY is it no?

Speaking about things that others won’t or can’t

That’s six goals and none of them are necessarily writing. Writing is how she is choosing to ACHIEVE her goals. It is one choice out of many ways of HOW she can fulfill her WHY. AND they are exactly what she’s going to look into to figure out HOW to do that AS THE PROCESS of achievement.

How can she share? Well, that might be about tone. She might focus on writing in a style that shows we’re all in this together. Or it might be about pursuing a particular outlet for publication or/and partnership. Such as working together with NAMI to be able to speak to the numbers and types of mental issues that come from her types of previous trials. Doing that is not taking time away from her writing, it is acting in concert with it. Her word count would be less of a measure than her ability to express those words in the way she wants.

I’m just going to skip ahead to the last one because I suspect you get it. And the last one is best for the next topic:

How does she speak about things others can’t? That’s hard. That means she has to talk about things that she doesn’t want to talk about. That means she has to relive traumas she would rather shove down and ignore enough that she can bring people into the experience with her. Maybe even because of that.

Is she going to write that 8 hours a day, 7 days a week, without taking breaks, without eating? Plunging ahead just to get it out and done and over with?

No. For several reasons.

First, she can’t. If she’s digging that deep into trauma, that schedule is going to giver her a mental lapse. Part of her self care will need to be figuring out a sustainable schedule. Because she’s not in a sprinting race. Look back at what she wants to do. You see a WHY like that and you know it’s not about one day of writing. It’s not even one book. This is a lifetime endeavor. So it’s a lifetime that has to be figured out so she won’t burn out. Each bit of writing is just HOW she is dealing with these issues this time. So her health, for the purposes of all the times to come, is more important.

Two, even if she’s writing a happy scene in her story, she’s not a brain in a vat. There’s no friendly scientist helpfully pumping constant nutrients into her tub. If you don’t take care of your body’s needs, your capabilities, of any and all kinds, deteriorate. When you’re tired, you don’t think as fast. When you’re hungry you don’t think as clearly. When you’re engaged in long monotonous tasks, you don’t pay as close attention.

For you, it might be interesting to measure your word count per time period. If you aren’t on a sudden jag of inspiration, you might very well do more words per .5 hours when it is earlier in the day than at the end, when you are tired and hungry. Looking at the total word count is only looking at the average of your total output. So if you do very well at some points and very poorly at others, it looks exactly the same as if you just did an even string all the way along, which isn’t necessarily true at all.

Most people have specific times when they write more and better than other times. Most people also don’t figure out when that is. Myself, I’ve got the easiest version up. I can figure out on a monthly basis which day of the week I do the most writing and which day I do the best. It does not shock me at all that my busiest day of the week, Wednesday, is my least productive day. I have plenty of hours still to write on Wednesdays but my stress and other difficulties eat into the time I have and I can’t write as much or as fast because my mind is always half on the other stuff I have to do that day. I hate Wednesdays. Even though I technically could write as much, I won’t. Because all that cuts into my capabilities.

But this extends deeper than a day. It extends to hours of the day. Sometimes even minutes. It extends to what you have going on. It extends to how long it has been since you have taken a break. It extends to if you are hungry and definitely to if you have low blood sugar. It extends to you being tired. All of that contributes to lower word count numbers.

That’s not saying don’t work at the bad times. Work whenever you like, however you like. It does mean that the more you have going against you in a given writing period, the lower you have to set your word count expectations.

If you have been writing all day without a break and without food, you have to expect that your word count per minute will be significantly lower than at the opposite end of the day. That will bring your average down. So it’s either: don’t measure them equally, or do everything you can to mitigate the slow down.

This is relatively minor when it’s just this one time, to make up. But for most writers, that’s actually when most of their writing is happening: that “one” time to “make up.” And if that is the case, then it’s just a lie. It’s not a bad one but that is what it is. And what really has to be done is to treat that as the norm, and take care of yourself accordingly.

The first words out of Orson Scott Card to us going to his Uncle Orson’s Writer’s bootcamp were: “Exercise or Die.” Because it’s the same thing. Not metaphorically, just is. We don’t take care of ourselves because we don’t want to. We don’t have time. We can take care of ourselves when we’re caught up. It’s just this once. Nope. Because it’s not catching up. It’s that people choose “I want to be a writer,” as their WHY and the only way to fulfill that is to write, which is real trouble if you need to sustain your body while writing.

I know for my body, I’ve been in physical therapy for some years now. That’s not normal. But what my therapist keeps trying to hammer into my head is. What we, as writers, do with our bodies is not natural to our bodies and it does real damage. My physical therapist pretty much does say to me every other time that I have to get up. I can’t sit there for hours at a stretch. At least every 40 minutes you have to take a break, otherwise there will be physical repercussions.

That’s one of the reasons that the Pomodoro method is so popular and effective. Because it forces the body to move every thirty minutes. Not as convenient for the brain but the brain is part of the body, not the other way around.

The brain, as much as the rest of the body, needs food, exercise, and rest. Just to survive, let alone thrive. And we would say that to anybody except ourselves. Somehow we, as writers are exempt from self care. Yeah, right.

Look back at Bela’s list. Writing isn’t the most important necessity, only the final one. You must write to have written. But you must sustain your capabilities in order to write. If you want to produce the most that you are capable of writing, the body must be maintained and cared for. You must be maintained and cared for. The more your body decays, the harder it is for your brain to work at peak efficiency. So if nothing else will get you to do it, do it for your word count. The healthier you are the closer you’ll be to your best. The less healthier you are, the more you will struggle to get those words down. And this is a cumulative effect.

Finally… Bella won’t go on that writing tear because she just doesn’t have to.

To be completely hypocritical given how much time I spend writing, nobody has to write like that. And it’s actually not the best way to write according to SCIENCE! Though to be a bit Republican about it, fuck the scientific establishment, you do you. And YOU can do your own science.

There are a lot of ways to write. There is no right answer to which is best. There are a lot of wrong answers to which is best for you. But you can figure those out. And among the possible right answers you can pull together and invent any number of strategies.

For myself, the most I have ever written in a single day was staying up all night in high school once to finish a short “novella” for the annual high school literary magazine. I wrote about 20 pages. So that was good. And then I didn’t write for three months. So that clearly wasn’t sustainable.

I did write for about seven years with the maxim of EVERY day. Better one sentence than nothing. And the longer it went, the more and more often it was just one sentence. Until I started talking to my therapist about it and she suggested I go into the mental hospital and not write anything for a while.

The most effective method in terms of word count per time for me, I honestly hate. It’s that same pomodoro method. Write for a short sprint, usually about 30 minutes, and when the alarm goes off, you stop. Period. No ifs. No ands. No buts. In the middle of ultimate inspiration you get your butt up and go take a break for a dead minimum of ten minutes.

Doing about six of those a day can pretty reliably bump up my numbers. But again, I hate it. It requires more self discipline than I usually have. It just has the advantage that I can’t get overused to what I’m doing or get as tired.

The other advantage it has is limits. Tasks expand to fill the time you have. You can give yourself too little time to write. You will not be able to meet your goals. For writing, you cannot give yourself too much time. You will just write and write and write until your time is up unless you’re already at the end. The Pomodoro method short cuts that. It teaches your brain that you don’t have all day. You have 30 minutes. That’s it. And your brain starts to respond to that and shove out more words at a time in an attempt to stretch the content instead.

But that’s timing, and honestly, that’s not what I usually find drives out the words. Timing and timers are great but it does come back to that WHY. Just adjusted for the moment. When I write, on the days I do well, I know why I am writing the particular section I am writing, I know how I want it to come out, and I know what general actions I want to happen. That combined with forcing myself to consider myself first and other things, like my word count, second are what really pushes me occasionally into the 5k+ realm in a day.

So how much are you pantsing and how much are you plotting? Would plotting more before you write help you to say more because you’d have goal posts? Experiment. Be your own guinea pig. It might be the opposite. You might be plotting too much and you need to worry less about hitting these abstract goal points and more about just letting the words roll and feeling the emotion of the moment.

If I know that part of WHY I am writing Ashla & Bogan is that I want to actually demonstrate a friendship between Anakin Skywalker and Obi Wan Kenobi, so Obi Wan is being honest that Anakin was a good friend. Then HOW I want to do that today is to write about Anakin Skywalker trying to save Obi Wan Kenobi’s life by stealing him out of a medbay and racing him around the hospital just ahead of Count Dooku. It’s not a random chase. The necessary events have to be based around my central WHY, which confines me and points me the same as the Pomodoro. I know a lot about the basic structure of WHAT beats I actually want to write and what their goal is before I ever start typing. And as I type, the beats that need to flow in next generally come to me because I know, at the core, what I’m up to.

The less I have to come up with on the fly, the faster I go. When writing papers for school, which went faster? Having the research done and selected materials ready for access before starting the paper? Or writing the paper and then grabbing for materials for research in progress?

Fiction is not that different. You’re inventing the materials but if you are inventing in the middle of writing, you are devoting a lot of energy to that instead of just on how to communicate what you’re inventing. And that will slow you down. That’s why people’s speed usually improves moving towards more plotting instead of towards more pantsing.

Everyone’s mileage varies but you only have one pool of energy for the whole you. So two tasks concurrently usually slows people down, exactly the same as a computer. If I have to imagine up on the fly what Count Dooku is going to say, even in principle, when he catches up, then I have to pause and figure that all out in the moment. Even if I can keep writing, it’s not going to be as fast as if I just typed up the speech I already imagined. So, something to think about.

Also Improv skills can also help. I am really good with rolling with it. One of my favorite tools is, “Yes…”. Can Anakin outrun Count Dooku? Yes… and… Count Dooku can cheat and cut through the wall to catch up. Can Anakin beat Count Dooku? Yes… but… he can’t do it with a lightsaber. So can he draw on the Force to do it? Yes… the dark side. It cuts off about half of my possible decisions and makes me think faster with the added advantage that it naturally presents itself as point - counterpoint which works well in written fiction. So that might help you out as well.

And finally… the really terrible classist item that I can’t make fit anywhere else and is unfortunately 100% true. You have to spend money for a high word count if you want one. Not necessarily a lot but some is necessary.

There is just no way around this, you only have a choice of how you spend the money. And the hope that you have already spent it in some way. The people who venerate Kerouac and his ream of butcher paper and typewriter or that all you need are a pencil and paper are fooling themselves and fucking lying to you. The world has moved on. Not from the typewriter but from all the other people whose name doesn’t get on their name on the cover who made up for that style of production. Those people have all lost their jobs and consequently, we have lost the ability to rely on them to make up for our own troubles.

The barrier to entry for just starting writing is nearly non existent. That far, and no farther, they are right.

The barrier to regular continuation of writing is fairly high because we’re still not evolved to do it. Story yes. Writing no. We are not designed for this activity. And you have to compensate for the fact that you are destroying your body if you want to keep it up.

If you want to write and you want to write a lot, your body is going to suffer. We do a very different exercise but it’s the same thing in principle as athletics as a career. Thankfully, we can cheat in some ways that athletes can’t. Relatively modest increases in pricing can result in significant gains. And relative increases help us on similar levels to all or nothing investments. Which isn’t true for athletes so much.

The more you invest, the better off you are AND that doesn’t mean you have to invest a yacht’s worth. It can be that one sentence sort of thought. Just one sentence, just one way of taking care of yourself, is good enough to start with. Just keep doing it as you can and build what you have to build.

Myself, I have Scrivener, Word, Textedit and several other writing programs that I don’t use anywhere near as much as those three. Luckily, no one has to have Scrivener, and you can write in anything you like as long as it works for you. Doesn’t matter as long as it makes you comfortable. Luckily you can also put off Word until you are done with a story and actually feel like submitting it.

But if you are going to submit in any professional way, you MUST have Word. Period. Not an option.

Luckily, Word also has the advantage that it is one of the best programs for holding large document files. It knows how to work with novel sized data in ways that pretty much everything else doesn’t. That’s a perk. Take those where you can get them. Until you need Word, find the program that you love and stick with that. If it’s free, great. If it’s not… consider it a work related expense. Because it is. You need to spend that money to make your work quality. Because discomfort in your access to the document will slow you down. Always. Think of it like glasses. You need glasses in order to read, if you need glasses. You need a program you like in order to write to keep it all clear in front of you. This isn’t an option this is a need. Treat it that way. If you have any issues with your current program, take time to see if another program works better. That will let you go faster.

You also need something for hands, wrists, arms, back, etc.

I have a Herman Miller Aeron Chair. It was a gift. They are good. I don’t know that they are so much better than lower priced competitors that it is worth paying more than 1K for. It’s a chair. A good chair. A 1K+ chair… that I don’t know. I suspect you can spend a quarter of that and get something perfectly adequate in exactly the same ways. But you do need something. If I’m sitting on my bed instead, about 3 hours into the writing sprint, the ache in my back starts taking precedence over the ache in my soul to write. So, you need to find a way to stop that. It’s especially good to stop it before you notice it. Because you will start to slow down before you are consciously aware of the discomfort. Absolute best is to make yourself comfortable years before it rises to the level of consciousness. Because all this stuff has cumulative effect. One day of aches is bad, but sitting the way that will give you aches once your body gets older has a much greater and more painful effect. It’s what the teachers have always said, sit up straight or it’s going to stick that way. To which my response was ‘Fuck you,’ and now it’s stuck that way.

I have a Kinesis Advantage keyboard. Not the Kinesis Advantage 2, the first one. Because that’s how long they last. I’ve heard people say that they have had their Maltrons, (which the Kinesis is the cheap American knockoff of) for multiple decades. I’ve had mine right around a decade. It was and remains the best $350 I have ever spent - or the best $3 a month I’ve spent, paid up front, for the last decade. The reason I physically CAN type as fast as I do is the Kinesis. Because most of the little aches and pains of typing are gone. I can type thousands of words a day, every day, for months, without pain. But once you get carpal, your days are numbered. Every tiny little strain eats away at your body and makes you slower. It starts fast and it accelerates. It takes me longer to redevelop symptoms than it does to cure them with my good keyboard but there’s no point really. Much better is to never develop any symptoms in the first place. Because I cannot recommend hunting and pecking while wearing a wrist brace while it all still hurts.

Thankfully, from what I hear, there is a great spectrum of effectiveness for keyboards. You can spend less and still be in good shape. But if there is one bit of money that is going to help your typing speed, it’s forking over for a good ergonomic keyboard. You just CAN go faster on an ergonomic keyboard once you adjust than you can on a regular keyboard. And it keeps that wrist brace off.

Also, not necessarily monetary, usually more about time, look into how you type. I mostly touch type. Mostly. But I do better if I also look. There are also alternate layouts. Colmak actually has studies showing that it is faster. I have a keyboard overlay for Colmak but I never use it because I can’t adjust to it so far. So, it’s always looking for what works for you. The Qwerty touch type experience may not actually be best for you.

OR there’s 10K an hour’s essential tip: buy a microphone and Dragon Naturally Speaking. Because almost no one can type 10k an hour, no matter how prepared you are, or how good your keyboard, but a lot of people can talk at 10k an hour with some aggressive practice. I’ve done that. My results are middling at best. I think in tandem with my typing enough that I feel like I pause too much to make it worth it. But your mileage may vary. I’ve also been able to just use what came with my Mac almost as well. So it’s definitely not zero money but you might be able to get away with money you’ve already spent. Or not, as it pleases you. I guess it more likely that most people will not reach 10k an hour. Most will not reach 10k a day. Just ever. And holding yourself to something you can’t do, just because someone else can do it, is an unfair comparison between the two of you and an unfair expectation of your body. Find your maximum and build around it.

But also, most people have no reason to hit 10k or whatever. We’re not writing business proposals for the meeting on monday. We’re mostly taking time out of our lives to create something that has not existed before we tried to cram it into existence onto a page. That takes time. Same way making the lightbulb took time. You can’t go as fast if you are doing more or are having to loop back around again and again. Or as is most common: both. Writers are doing too much work to go at their top speed in other endeavors.

For instance, I wrote the first 4k of this in noticeably less time than it takes me to do half that word count in a piece of fiction. Because I don’t have to make any of it up. I don’t have to imagine it. This is just what’s already in my head. So it’s easier. Faster. Because it is a different activity. I can’t judge the two by the same standard.

Because this is transcription, really. I’m just putting down what I already think, more or less. Trying to create at the same time is another activity which takes from the same pool of energy and also takes time. So I have to go slower. Inevitably. And then there’s the reason I love Nanowrimo. While we’re trying to do two tasks that slow us down, we try to add a third one in there, elegance. We want to make sure that it doesn’t just go but that it also looks good doing it. Leave that for editing and you will go faster. I am a deep fan of the double parenthesis. “She ((however you move the stick shift to make it go faster)) and sped off into the night.” Or “He ((did something cool with his hair)) and winked.” Because the double parenthesis never occurs in regular writing and I can just search for it, and anything I put in it is an editorial note that means I never have to get a word right or interupt my flow to look up a detail. And if it’s a first draft, especially a Nano, I don’t need the right word, I need just whatever I need to know to figure it out later. If I even do that much work. When I’m being good ;) my shifting the time costs away from the moment of writing, creating before and editing after, I can do more writing in a given moment.

And yeah, that’s about what I currently know about it. Though I am always learning if I can. It comes down to:

Making sure you are measuring what you want to measure. And, if you are not. reconsidering your measure and measurements.

Have in your head specifically WHY you are doing what you’re doing.

Take care of your body.

Try not to write at the expense of your body, even at select times.

Try different schedules. Keep track of which schedules produce the best results.

Adjust your ratio of Pantsing to Plotting, even in specific scenes and sprints.

Spend some money to take better care of your body and your writing than you can yourself.

Treat creation, transcription, and elegance as three separate tasks. If you have to do all three at once, it’s going to take you longer than any of them on their own.

AND: Remember to not beat yourself up over any of this because all of it is hard. Treating it as easy is another way to delay yourself by devoting some of your limited energy to conflict with your own psyche. What you do is what you do. When it is done, it is done. If you decide you want to do better or more, work out a plan for experimentation going forward instead of focusing on how the last time wasn’t good enough.

THE EARTH’S APOCALYPSE

Disclosure

Apocalypse: Greek, meaning disclosure.

For us, the anonymous authors, the most important part of this book is a full disclosure about human existence upon this earth. It is our intent, to the best of our abilities, to disclose the real truth throughout this book. Only if humans know the real truth about who they are and why they exist can they set aside their differences and unite together and live in peace and harmony, not only with each other, but also with planet Earth.

At the time of the writing of this book, mortals have developed technology and weapons that could easily wipe out the entire human race. What present mortals don’t know is that the human race existed on Earth five previous times during the past billions of years that the earth has existed. In light of the fact that modern humans can only trace their origins back a few hundred thousand years, and this would be a speculation because human writing and the recording of human history has only been around for a few thousand, it should make sense that billions of years of Earth’s existence produced other time periods when humans existed.

The real truth is, the ancestors of modern humans have been around for over two million years, since the end of the last major ice age. Even two million years is a drop in a bucket compared to an ocean of time that the earth has been able to support and sustain living organisms. When humans are upon earth, they do things that are not natural compared to how other life forms live in symbiosis with the natural world. Symbiosis is when life forms live with each other on Earth and exist for the mutual benefit of each other. Humans exist for humans. Their intelligence dominates all other life forms. They exploit the earth for their own benefit unlike any other life form can. This unnatural way of existing upon Earth causes the earth to warm, thus eliminating any possibility of another ice age, but what happens if humans destroy themselves? They would no longer cause the earth to warm and another ice age would be the result.

If you consider the span of two million years in a timeline of five BILLION years, and you give each of the past five time periods when humans existed upon earth two million years each (enough time for humans to develop great civilizations and then kill each other off), that would still leave 4 billion, 9 hundred and ninety million years for Earth to exist without humans. Even five separate human time periods of two million years each is nothing compared to the time that Earth has been around. In the spectrum of time, it would seem that humans are of little significance to the earth’s existence, but the real truth is, the earth wouldn’t exist, couldn’t exist, without humans, any more than your own personal dream world could exist if you weren’t the dream character creating and experiencing it.

One might ask, how did humans come to exist on Earth? The simple answer would be an honest answer to this question: How did your dream self get inside your dreams? When you dream, isn’t it a world? Isn’t it an environment in which you are participating with other people, with other life forms, with plants, animals, buildings, etc.? Doesn’t it seem perfectly real while you’re dreaming? The real truth is, the exact same way that your dream world exists, so does planet Earth. The exact same way that you enter a dream and start living in a dream environment is the exact same way that you became a conscious, living part of this earth. (These concepts will make more sense as you continue to read this book.)

A little over one thousand years ago, humans discovered that by mixing three simple elements together, charcoal, sulfur, and salt, and sparking it with heat, it would explode. This discovery, as most discoveries do, happened by chance. A woman actually discovered it. She built a fire with wood and coal over a piece of ground that contained a lot of sulfur. She didn’t know what sulfur was. She simply found the place where she wanted to cook some meat and built a fire. She heavily salted the meat to taste. As some of the salt fell on the coals sitting on the sulfur ground, it ignited in a never before seen fashion. This woman discovered a powerful explosive powder. It didn’t take long for men to figure out how to use this powder to make weapons to kill. Gunpowder gave humans more power and control, not only over the natural world, because now they could kill any animal easily, but over each other. In just a few hundred years, until the early 20th century introduced a power much more destructive than gunpowder, men would masterfully manipulate gunpowder to create unimaginable weapons of destruction.

Gunpowder was discovered in each of the last five human time periods, before the start of the last ice age. Weapons of mass destruction (powered ONLY by gunpowder) were eventually developed by humans and used to kill each other, ending the human race at those times. What had never been discovered before, in any of these previous human time periods upon earth, was nuclear fission. Nuclear fission is when the nucleus of certain elements split spontaneously or on impact with another element to release extraordinary amounts of energy. These other civilizations didn’t get that far along before they killed each other with gunpowder. It was early on during the industrial age in Europe (about 1780) when nuclear fission was first discovered, again by accident. Another hundred years or so would pass before men once again learned how to harness the power of a nuclear reaction to kill.

Anyone can make their own gunpowder and a gun with which to use it. That’s easy. Not everyone can make their own atomic weapon. It’s not that easy, but soon, VERY SOON, in the spectrum of modern time, creating an atomic reaction and using it as a weapon will be as easy as making gunpowder for a gun. Soon, anyone upon earth, with a few simple instructions, will be able to make an atomic weapon.

Many people believe that all people have the right to bear arms, i.e., own a gun. In the United States of America there are approximately 300 million gunpowder-driven firearms, one for every man, woman, and child living in the United states. What if there were 300 million nuclear bombs controlled by unregulated and opinionated individuals? What if a man entered a stadium full of people with a gun? How many people could he kill until he was gunned down himself? Not more than hundred, if that. What if he entered that stadium armed with a nuclear weapon? How many people would he kill? EVERYONE!

We know that the predictability of anyone being able to produce a crude but powerful nuclear weapon is certain - VERY CERTAIN! A nuclear weapon will replace a gun as the weapon of choice by individuals and groups who want to make a political or religious statement to the rest of the world. Once this starts happening, it is only a matter of a very few years before mortals, once again, for the sixth time during Earth’s existence, annihilate the human race.

Gun rights advocates claim that if everyone is armed, then it creates a safer society. This simply is not true. The real truth is, arming a person outside of a “well-regulated militia,” is dangerous and stupid. Gun violence in the United States of America, where the most vociferous gun rights activists exist, is shocking! Now consider what the United States would be like if everyone had the right to own their own nuclear weapon? A single instance of road rage would destroy an entire freeway system and any population living in close vicinity. It doesn’t matter how much control the governments of the world are trying to maintain over the production and manufacturing of nuclear weapons, in the near future, these impotent governments will not be able to stop it.

Why does a human want to kill another human?

There are two main reasons why humans kill each other: in protection of self-preservation and in protection of self-worth. Don’t take a man’s castle, his wife, his kids, or his food … or his gun—his ability to protect himself and his stuff! But just as important, don’t take away that man’s self-worth and value!

Arguments and disagreements about religion (philosophies) and politics (government) are, and have always been, the main reasons why humans, mostly men, have killed each other. Politics protect self-preservation. Religion protects self-worth. To end the desire that humans have to kill each other, we must first learn how to support and protect the ability of an individual to exist in this world, and just as important, we must learn how to support and protect the ability of an individual to have and maintain individual self-worth. To accomplish these two things, we must get rid of the philosophies and governments that have caused the problems, and will continue to cause the problems unless we get rid of them. How can this be done without more violence? What can free us from the threat of being killed by other humans? The answer: the real truth—understanding each other in a way that we have never understood each other before.

Well was it said, then written, the Truth Shall Set You Free! Who actually said this? Where did the idea come from? Millions of humans have lost their lives over fighting about from where this saying originated. The real truth is that it was first coined during the time of the first ancient Greek philosophers. Veritas liberabit vos, is how it was first written.

Writing has only been around for a few thousand years. Telling a story, or writing it out, for entertainment has been around for a lot less time. The ancient Greeks were the first culture that wrote down stories as a means of teaching and entertainment. Long before the Hebrew stories about Moses were first written down (they had been told orally for centuries), the Greek stories, the Iliad and Odyssey were fictitiously written stories that taught morals, entertained, and inspired the Greeks.

The real truth is, the Greeks were commissioned by Hebrew tribal leaders to listen to their oral histories and help them write their history down as a story. The stories of Moses that began Hebrew mythology are no more real than Greek mythology, but don’t attempt to convince a Jew, Muslim, or Christian of this. They will kill you! Why would they kill you? Because it is from their personal belief that they are a chosen people of the Hebrew god, who, according to the story, chose just one man, out of all the people upon Earth at that time, (Abraham), that Jews, Muslim, and Christians gain their self-worth and value. Remember, religion protects self-worth; and if you threaten a man’s self-worth, he will kill you, as he has done with gunpowder in the past, and as he will do with a nuclear weapon in the near future.

The only way to stop this human atrocity from happening, is if we can convince the “children of Abraham (i.e., Jews, Muslims, and Christians),” that Abraham was no more real than Prometheus (the main character of the Greek story). This can only be done if we can help people understand the real truth.

Because societies and cultures have developed that have placed themselves above all other societies and cultures, the people belonging to these societies and cultures believe that they have more rights to the resources of Earth than everyone else does. The ability of an individual to exist upon Earth by using Earth’s limited resources, is self-preservation. Remember, politics is the protection of self-preservation; and if you threaten a man’s self-preservation, he will kill you, as he has done with gunpowder in the past, and as he will do with a nuclear weapon in the near future!

The only way to stop this human atrocity from happening, is if we can convince the people of the world that we are all equal human beings and that there are plenty of resources on earth to provide for all of our needs equally. This can only be done if we can help people understand the real truth.

We intend to disclose the real truth to the people of Earth throughout this book. We intend on presenting enough evidence of who we really are as human beings and why we really exist as human beings to convince all people that we should not be killing each other. WE SHOULD BE LIVING IN PEACE AND HARMONY.

If our disclosure of real truth falls on deaf ears, human existence will end once again. This time, there will be no need for the solar system of planets of which Earth is a part. Just as easily as a dream world disappears when we wake up from our dreams, so shall this earth and the solar system and universe that sustains it disappear. Just as easily!

Our disclosure is truly THE EARTH’S APOCALYPSE!

Shortly after the New Testament of the Christian bible was created during the 4th century C.E., an esoteric piece of extraordinary Greek literature was anonymously submitted to the Catholic (Greek: worldwide) Church. The church’s councils were given charge of creating an official Roman Christian religion. The treatise was written in Greek. It was titled, the Apocalypse; which in the Greek language means, the Disclosure.

This comprehensive and detailed disclosure about the struggles of humankind was written in allegoric religious prose. This type of symbolic writing was familiar to the new Catholic Christian religion. Nevertheless, no other piece of literature associated with the world’s major religions has been more grossly misinterpreted and misread than this Greek masterpiece.

No other culture of a human society has ever been as proficient at using forms of allegory and symbolism as the Greeks were—none anciently, nor modernly. For this reason, it was by Greek hands, and first in the Greek language, that the New Testament of the Roman Catholic Church was written. Almost a thousand years prior to the creation of the New Testament, it was Greek writers who were commissioned to create the stories of the Old Testament. What these Greek mythical masters created has affected the world more than any other piece of literature.

The piece of extraordinary Greek allegoric literature mentioned above as the Apocalypse was eventually translated into other languages until it became known as the book of Revelation. The proof of the misuse and gross misinterpretation of this masterpiece is obvious in how most modern Christian faiths define the word Apocalypse. These misguided systems of belief have distorted the author’s original idea for his work. His literary work is a revelation—a disclosure—of certain things that he wanted to express about human nature and the state of the world.

Unscrupulous and ignorant religious leaders tout the book’s title as a symbol for the “end of the world.” When modern Christians hear the word “Apocalypse,” they immediately think of the world ending in some cataclysmic way. The book of Revelation says nothing … absolutely nothing … about the end of the world. Its storyline ends with a new world (a new heaven and new earth) ushered in by truth, justice, peace, and equality. The word, apocalypse, is not mentioned, not one time, in the body of the work.

The book presents the Christian savior, as a man riding on “a white horse … called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war … and out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations; and he shall rule them with a rod of iron … KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”

Ironically, when this “savior” comes and judges the people of earth, there are ONLY two main groups of people who are punished: “the kings and merchants of the earth”—the politicians and business people. Politicians are meant to support and protect an individual’s right to self-worth and value. Businesses are meant to support and protect an individual’s right to self-preservation. Combined, these two social entities should exist to protect all people’s rights equally, but they combine in secret, behind the backs of the masses. They do not combine in secret to support the self-preservation and self-worth of the masses. They combine in secret to protect their own selfish interests. Revelation’s author knew how corrupt the politicians and business entities of the Roman Empire had become. He knew, however, that he couldn’t openly condemn these powerful secret combinations. He had to present the idea to the people the best way he could without openly defying and condemning these great powers. He wrote the allegory of Revelation:

The politicians and business people, “who have committed fornication and lived deliciously [on earth], shall bewail [earth], and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning.” This “burning,” like most everything else written in the context of the story, is not a physical, but an emotional one.

The “lake of fire burning with brimstone” was taken directly from ancient Greek mythology. The River Pyriphlegethon (Fire) was the place where tormented souls would go and forever sail throughout the underworld in misery. These condemned sailors were distressed (felt a burning) because of the way that they treated others during their mortal life.

Revelation’s author witnessed, firsthand, the suffering of the masses upon Earth (throughout the entire Roman Empire) as a result of the power and control of Roman politicians and business owners. The masses were suffering unlike at any other time, up to that point, in recorded human history. These sufferings led to great uprisings throughout the Roman Empire.

Emperor Constantine called on the “kings and merchants” throughout the land for advice. Once gathered and consulted—the councils at Nicea being only a part of these gatherings—these “kings and merchants,” who were also the people’s spiritual leaders, found a way to give hope to the masses. They gave the people what the people had already been convinced to accept as their only hope: a promised Messiah, a savior, who would, who could, save them.

This messianic theme was presented for hundreds of years throughout Greek literature. The Greek gods, always aware of the miserable situation that the masses were experiencing upon earth, created saviors to show their mercy and compassion to mortals. Hercules, born of a virgin mother and of the great Greek god, Zeus, was just as popular throughout ancient Greece, as Jesus, the Messiah, the Christ, the savior of the world, was throughout the Roman Christian empire.

The story of hope that Hercules implied worked for the Greeks. These types of stories quieted the ignorant masses, gave hope to the poor and downtrodden, and controlled the exploited majority existing under the power, wealth, and control of the Greek “kings and merchants” … the Greek politicians and business people.

Revelation’s author tied into the idea that one of Jesus’ disciples, John the Beloved, became immortal,

“Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that the disciple should not die; yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?”

Revelation’s author is the same Roman-Greek who authored the Gospel of John. Written for the new Christian mindset, the idea would hold that if John the Beloved was immortal, then he would have lived through the rise and fall of the Great Roman Empire. He would have known the cause thereof. He would be able to disclose this cause to the world. He could offer an allegoric warning to the world of what had happened when the “kings and merchants” of the Great Roman Empire maintained their control and power over the people. He could also give people hope and show them the way to a “new heaven and a new earth,” but only if the people were willing and able to get rid of the secret combination of politics and business and start to control things for everyone equally.

Unfortunately, the corrupt Christian religious leaders didn’t have a clue of how to interpret the author’s symbolism. They never looked beyond their false prophecies and corrupt teachings. Their pretended learning gave them prestige and power in the eyes of the masses and allowed them to control the people. They could never connect Revelation’s symbolism to its original source: early Greek writings, especially those of the Greek Old Testament.

These corrupt spiritual leaders turned a beautiful hope-laced piece of literature into a fear-based speculation of unprecedented emotional influence. Instead of seeing Revelation as a disclosure (Apocalypse) of what actually causes human misery, religious leaders turned the story into a fantasy about the devil. Nothing is more evident of this deception than the following verse:

“Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for its number is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six (666).”

The author embedded this important clue to demonstrate the corrupt ignorance of the religious leaders who would make future attempts to interpret this easy-to-understand phrase. Revelation’s author knew that NONE … not one Christian leader of any sect … would have the “understanding” to solve this simple riddle. In their ignorance and deception, Christian leaders would attribute “the number of the beast” to the devil. They couldn’t have been more wrong … and corrupt!

The “man” and “his number” came directly from the Old Testament:

“Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was Six hundred three score and six (666) talents of gold.”

The “beast” and its “number,” its “image,” and its “mark,” was all about the economic system upon which the people of the earth were dependent—a system completely controlled by the “kings and the merchants.”

The people of the world had become materialistic and completely dependent upon this great beast. Revelation’s author would disclose that this economic system was like a “great whore that sitteth upon many waters [i.e., throughout the whole earth]; with whom the kings of the earth have committeth fornication [i.e., corrupt politicians and governments] and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.”

It is an economic system that has power to give life to its own image, deceiving the people of Earth to believe that worldly things and economic prosperity, and the image of economic success was more important than being kind, equal, compassionate people. This great “beast” causes all people, “both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand [i.e., in the works that they do], or in their foreheads [i.e., in the thoughts that they have]. And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.”

This “first beast,” was the Great Roman Empire that fell. Revelation’s author recognized the inevitable: a second beast, “another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon [i.e., pretending to be innocent like a lamb in its own defense {horns} proclaiming its greatness and power]. It doesn’t take a genius to see that history often repeats itself; that this same economic system that had caused the fall of the Great Roman Empire would be the result if the people continued to allow “kings and merchants” to have power and control over them.

The modern United States of America couldn’t be a better representation of an economic power with “two horns like a lamb [that speaks] as a dragon, where politicians and business have power and control over society.

The profound DISCLOSURE (the Apocalypse) that the people of modern Earth have repeated history is evident in the emotional distress that most people upon Earth are experiencing today.

“The smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosever receiveth the mark of his name [in his right hand or in his forehead].

Economic distress and disparity is the cause of most of our problems. The people of Earth are being forced to participate in the economic structure outlined and controlled by Earth’s politicians (kings) and business corporations (merchants). There is no government that exists upon Earth that is just, fair, and equitable for all. There is no government that represents the masses. Governments represent and are controlled by the “kings and merchants of the earth.”

The people of Earth can no longer afford to wait upon “Hercules” to save us. We must become the force—the “man riding upon the white horse with a two-edge sword coming out of his mouth.” We must “smite the nations,” the “king” and the “merchants” with one voice, a strong voice as if it were coming from heaven, proclaiming that we want a “new heaven and a new earth.”

We must unite together and create a just, worldwide government whose existence and purpose is not to punish the wealthy, but to work with them to fulfill the great and last judgment that the Christian “Hercules” proclaimed would be his final judgement upon the people of earth. We must unite, for we are the “Sons and Daughters of man.” We must regain our glory as equal human beings. With the power of ONE VOICE, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all, we must “gather all the nations together” and separate the people in power and control who do not give meat to the hungry, water to the thirsty, a home to the homeless, health and mental care to the sick, and care for and help those who have been imprisoned for cause, not always a just cause, but because they were forced to worship the beast and his image … we must separate the people in power, who do not provide these things to all people equitably, from those of us who do, or at least who want to.

We are each individually upon this earth writing our own “Book of Life.” However, we cannot write, we cannot live upon earth and write our own book, when we are forced by poverty and inequality to subject our minds and souls to the great beast that others have created—to that beast that receives its power from the politicians and merchants of the earth. WE ARE WRITING THEIR BOOK OF LIFE!

The wise Greek authors who were responsible for the stories of the new Roman Christian savior, Jesus, knew what they were doing. They knew what had worked and what had not in their own culture. They knew what caused the downfall of the Greek Republic, of the Roman Republic, and eventually of the Great Roman Empire. They warned us and gave us hope. Yes, they used a fictitious Hercules-type character to represent a hope that all of us share, a spirit of unity, faith in humanity, and love for each other.

It’s this “Spirit of Christ” that exists in each one of us born into this world. It is by this HOPE and SPIRIT that we can change the world, making a new heaven and earth. These Greek authors presented the great judgement of Christ as simply those who take care of the poor and needy and those who don’t. Those who do, are saved … those who can save the world. Those who don’t are condemned … they are the problem. These authors presented this parable in the modern New Testament, the twenty-fifth chapter of Matthew.

The author of the book of Revelation profoundly presented the same idea of the judgment of the world that the Greek New Testament authors presented in Matthew. Regarding this judgment, he wrote that all the people of earth will “stand before God; and the books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, ACCORDING TO THEIR WORKS … ACCORDING TO IF THEY GAVE MEAT TO THE HUNGRY, WATER TO THE THIRSTY, HOMES TO STRANGERS, HEALTH AND MENTAL CARE TO THE SICK, AND COMPASSION AND LOVE TO THE IMPRISONED.

We have no hope UNLESS we have the right hope! We must come to realize how all ancient religious scripture was written, from where its concepts came, who actually wrote it, for what purpose they wrote what they did, and when they actually wrote it. We must no longer allow ourselves to be controlled and deceived by religious and spiritual leaders who haven’t the intelligence to figure out the very basic and easy clues given in the greatest DISCLOSURE ever penned by a mortal: the APOCALYPSE.

We must release ourselves from the bonds of ignorance by which we have been chained for thousands of years, controlled and manipulated by the “kings and merchants and false prophets” of Earth. We must realize that our salvation rests solely in our own hands.

The authors of this book comprise a think-tank of extraordinary human beings who have done the research, spent years of study and contemplation, and read everything humanly possible in order to be able present a plan to the human race upon Earth that will keep history from repeating itself. There has never been a “Hercules” who has saved anyone. There has never been one who has changed the world for the better. Hercules does not exist, but the “Spirit of Hercules” exists in each one of us. We know what will save our world, what will save us from each other, what can usher in peace on Earth and goodwill towards all. We know what needs to be done.

We offer this Apocalypse to the people of the world in hopes that they will see through the ignorance of the past and join with us, placing our names in the ONLY Book of Life® that exists upon Earth, legally and properly. By submitting our names and personal information in the Book of Life®, we commit ourselves to the establishment of a ONE World Government and a NEW Constitution and its order of law. This NEW Constitution shall establish law that provides each and every human being living upon our earth with the basic necessities of life, (i.e., nutritious food and clean water, secure housing, basic clothing, health and mental care, and education), free of any debt or charge, from the moment of our birth to the moment of our death.

Ensuring that customers get what they want is called a service quality. Managing service delivery is the single most effective mean for differentiation among companies. The customer participation is service process is quickly increasing due to this reason. Service operations managers need to decide to which extend the customer is involved into delivery process. It is expected that in nearest future only two extreme formats of delivery will prevail: complete employee service and complete self – service. The mixture of these two extremes is still present in businesses today, even though the increasing self-service delivery will change the situation.

Customer’s involvement is usually mandatory, obligatory for the delivery processes. However, the service operations manager needs to know very well the specifics of service product: the level of necessary customer involvement will vary depending on this. There are cases when customers provide only minimal assistance throughout the process: they stay passively preoccupied. Nevertheless, in most cases customers substitute employee service with the self-service: they play active roles. Especially recently, customers tend to be more active in self – service.

Increasing customer involvement has a lot of benefits as practice has shown. For example, Internet auctions and Internet banking are all self – serviced. Such new business models (aimed at using full customer self – service) have great success in establishing their market position and achieving greater market share. There is a growing competition between these emerging self – service based companies and traditional employee based service companies.

For example, Internet stock trading companies – customer trading stocks successfully competes against traditional brokerage companies – employee trades for customers. In this example, the outcome of the competition is obvious - the workload between the company and customer (serf – service) is a decisive factor. The expenses for hiring new employees for service delivery are absent. The company gets pure income. This is another reason why service operations manager should try to increase customer participation as much as possible.

The difference in the proportion of workload which is outsourced tot eh customer or end user influences the company’s service delivery process and infrastructure as well as costs’ reduction. In addition, the impact of increased customer participation in the delivery process on the service quality is defined by the self – service level. Customer’s self –service is an important, sometimes even bigger, part of the service. Productivity and customer efficiency also has influence on service quality and expected demand. When a customer participates in the process, the perceived value of the service is increased many times, because customer himself has done something by himself.

As a result, customers increasing participation in the service processes will bring changes on the market with high competition level. There are many questions to be answered before the company decides to use full self – serviced delivery. Among them are: Will the self – serving companies be able to gain enough of market share to be competitive on the market compared to traditional approaches? How will this result be achieved by self – serviced companies? Who will be the leader: new approaches to delivery or traditional ones? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each service delivery approach? These questions can be answered only by the service mangers that have tried both approaches and found out which one is better.

The role self – service and customer in the process of delivery is very important, because the customer creates the value of the service by himself. He is the one responsible for the delivery quality and there is nobody else to blame for faults. Outsourcing delivery of service to customers gives competitive advantage to the company. People like to be involved in the process which will bring benefit to them; they are doing it not for somebody else but for themselves.

Service manager needs to decide what services can be outsourced or what amount of this service delivery can be handles by customers. If the service is not very complicated or difficult to do and does not require highly specialized skills it can be outsourced to customers. In addition, even if some knowledge and expertise is required in service delivery it still can be outsourced: customer needs to be provided with certain information on how to accomplish the task.

There was a mathematical model developed on how to calculate profit levels of two companies: one using full self – service delivery and the other using full –service. The research resulted in the interesting finding that the optimal, the best proportion of the workload to be outsourced is 0% or 100%. If the number is somewhere in between, the company may even encounter minimization of the profit figure. The service operations managers, therefore, have a choice of two options: to outsource as much of service delivery as possible or continue using traditional service delivery approaches. Also research has shown that companies with self – service had higher income rations than the ones with full service due to the absence of expenses for having employees to deliver this service to customer.

The key characteristic of the service delivery is the combination of simultaneous production and consumption. Customers get involved in the process so they influence the outcome of the quality of service delivery and the satisfaction by it. Before the service transaction can be completed, the customer needs to contribute some information or effort. The quality, therefore, depend on this information or effort of the customer.

Because services are intangible, there is always a risk associated with the service delivery. Introducing self - servicing, attributes part of this risk to customer’s role. For this reason, the service operations manager needs to try to increase the level of customer participation. However, the service provides will always risk in this situation in the control over the encounter cannot be ensured with relying on customers to perform the task of delivering service.

The most important issue of the customer participation are the roles which customers take in the service delivery. It is important for service managers to remember that customer comes to a service encounter with an idea in mind about what their role should be in this cooperation. This idea might have been derived from previous experience with similar services. Most often customer knows what to do because he has seen it in the advertising, on television or heard through word – of – mouth. It is also important for service manager to know and make necessary adjustments, that not all customers will come with correct and the same understanding of their roles. Necessary facilities need to clearly explain what should occur.

Roles also have important involvement of control issues. Clear communication of the information and mutual understanding of the roles which each party needs to perform will clarify the amount of control each party has. It is a proven fact that this mutual understanding between parties resulted in higher satisfaction received from service if both parties understood beforehand what their roles should be. There are a couple of strategies proposed which help service managers to manage customer participation. For example, telling customers in advance what are their expected roles. The customer needs prior training in operational procedures – this will increase the satisfaction level of service delivered.

Although there has been a lot of discussion in the literature about the customer participation in service delivery, the definition and management of the roles needed in the participation are still unexplored. However, it is a fact that if individuals have no necessary information about their roles and roles of service provider, they will get involved in coping others that can result in anxiety and higher dissatisfaction level.

The control that customers feel during their participation in service encounters influences the level of satisfaction they receive from service. Service operations manager needs to know how to increase this satisfaction. One way is to offer alternatives, choices within the servicing setting. For example, remote availability of electronic resources, photocopying of printed materials and self – servicing facilities, reference consultation on – site or by telephone.

The problems in service encounter usually appear because of the conflicts: who has more control in the service interactions. Both customer and provider of service have a need for control. It is generally accepted that customer participation has positive impact on both providers and customers. Here questions start to appear: how this positive participation can be stimulated and managed? Service manager needs to know how to manage customer participation in service encounters to have beneficial outcomes for both sides. Service providers must develop mechanisms and find ways to make sure that customers know what is expected from them and put effort to facilitate the outcome.

Customers need to be empowered to co-produce their own experience. Increasing customer involvement brings cost and convenience benefits for organization and customer himself. Service manager needs to remember that the greater the involvement of the customer in the service delivery, the greater the likelihood that this experience will meet expectations of both company and customer. If it does not happen, the customer also bears the part of responsibility and the service provider is not the only part to put guilt on.

Introducing self – serving methods of service delivery, company will gain loyalty from those customers who think of themselves as part of the organizational family. Moreover, through communicating with customers, service provider may directly learn defects of service and have immediate feedback about what should be done to improve.

It is important to understand that service is a not just a delivery of product, it is a process, a deed, a performance and effort from both provider and customer. It goes beyond the first encounter with a customer; it builds relationship between the company and society represented by this customer. Service operations manager should be aware that they do not only create the economic value for the firm but also social value for the customers. Customers have expectations that their rights are respected and the company needs to stick to ethical standards and contribute to the development.

It is impossible to quantify the value of service delivered, but the value of quality it adds to the company is obvious. The managing delivery quality is equally important as increasing customer participation in the process. It has a significant impact on whether this person, this customer will deal with the company again, use its service or not. They must have handled so many cases already, and yet there was no sign of grumpiness on anyone’s face - from the guards as we went in, the people who assisted us, and even down to the cashiers! To top it all off, we had sooo many questions to ask. You’d expect annoyance or apathy from them, but they were doing their jobs very well and had on very pleasant faces that smiled at us and such friendly vibes while assisting us properly all throughout.

Going back, this is what we learned from our inquiry.

Apparently, we are only allowed to use one account to avail of the maternity benefit once I give birth. Both my husband and I had our own PhilHealth accounts, but since my last contribution had been September of 2016 (Ladies, best not to overlook your contributions! This way, my account would have to be deactivated and we won’t have to pay for my unpaid contributions over the past few months which would amount to PHP2,400.00!

I’m due to give birth in a few weeks and I was still allowed to accomplish the form... and it was approved!

Thank goodness I got a tip from a friend whose wife gave birth recently that I should still try to go for the application at SSS. So today, Pao and I ended up at Robinsons Place Imus to figure out how to go about the process of claiming the maternity benefits from SSS.
