Hi, friends! The last chapter of The New Marguerite is up, and just like I did with Nightingale, I’ve made The New Marguerite available for download as a PDF. You can download the full story here.
I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has read and supported this story. I’ve been absolutely blown away by the amount of love it’s received. It might be my favorite thing that I’ve ever written, and I’m so glad to know that you all have been enjoying it too.
As a bit of a bonus that may or may not actually be interesting to people, I thought I’d share some of the resources I used to research this story! There are some really fun digital archives out there that were an absolute treat to explore, so if you want to delve deeper into the world of opera in 1890s New York City, this is for you.
Resources
Metropolitan Opera Archives
I literally started writing this fic because I couldn’t get enough of the Metropolitan Opera’s incredible archives. Not only do they have records of every single performance, they also include details like cast and production information, reviews, and photos. I have spent hours upon hours looking through these archives and find them endlessly fascinating.
New York Tribune (Library of Congress)
Another thing that I find incredibly interesting is reading old newspapers. Copies of the New York Tribune from 1892 and 1893 were very helpful. The page that I’ve linked to here includes reviews from the Met’s reopening on November 27, 1893.
Music
Faust is my favorite opera, and the many references to it in Phantom were what prompted me to first listen to it. For obvious reasons, there are also a lot of references to it in my story. If you’re not familiar with the opera and want a little taste, I thought I’d share a few of the scenes that feature in the fic.
Act 3 No. 9 (The Jewel Song)
Act 3 No. 18 (Faust and Marguerite’s duet)
Act 5 (Finale)
Just for fun (and because I have an intense love of Gounod), here are the two pieces from Romeo et Juliette that I mentioned.
Act 1 No. 3 (Je veux vivre)
Act 4 No. 17 (Amour, ranime mon courage)
And finally, the mad scene from Ambroise Thomas’s Hamlet and Henry Bishop’s “Home, Sweet Home,” which feature in the final chapter.
