Diasomnia Character Songs and Associations

It's finally here! The end of the character songs and associations series! It took a bit longer to get out than I thought it would, but it's now finished.

Here is the seventh dorm, Diasomnia; the dorm of the spirit of nobility. The final of the seven, but also, interestingly, the dorm that started this entire idea.

Notes: Every song is from my liked songs playlist (so feel free to judge me for my taste, haha!) and I only allowed myself to use an artist once for this project. There is also some strong language and mature themes in some of the songs, so be aware if you choose to listen to them. I’ve included: - A song that represents them, - A song they'd listen to, and (for some) an additional song, depending on the character and circumstance

Malleus Draconia

Represented by: Nymphs Finding the Head of Orpheus - Nicole Dollanganger

This song was actually what inspired me to make this series. It just reminds me so much of Malleus. The narrative setting is similar to the ruins he loves to explore, the music itself is somewhat ethereal, and the lyrics reflect the loneliness Malleus often feels, as well as his fear of loss and change.  It's powerful, it's reflective, it's strange, and it's beautiful. Much like Malleus himself.

Listens to: Symphony No. 40 in G Minor, K. 550: IV: Allegro assai - W.A. Mozart, Sinfonia Varsovia, Yehudi Menuhin

Malleus likely listens to primarily classical music, and probably knows how to play many of the pieces he listens to. He would especially enjoy the playfulness of Mozart's compositions, as most Mozart pieces (operas, symphonies, etc.) have a light mood, and are usually filled with jokes. Absolutely perfect for a fae prince!

Lilia Vanrouge

Represented by: Phantasmagoria - Polkadot Cadaver

This song feels very Lilia to me. With a focus on (possibly?) playful scaring, and the uncertain or hidden origins of what people see. There's spooks and startles, but is generally meant to be fun... or that's what's assumed. The Avant-Garde metal genre also suits the unique, fun intensity of Lilia's character.

Listens to: After Life in Purgatory - Lock Up

Okay, I know that 'Lock Up' is grindcore, and not the thrash metal that Lilia canonically listens to. BUT he would totally also listen to music like this. It's fast. It's loud. It's full of screaming. Lilia would love it! (And he'd probably somewhat relate to the lyrics of this song too, considering his past...)

Bonus - Suggests for Music Club: Renewal - Veil

Lilia would suggest something like Veil to play in Music Club, arguing that it's more "gentle" and "approachable" for non-metal fans than some other subgenres, which, yes, that may be the case, but still... Cater would be a bit freaked out.

Silver

Represented by: イジメ、ダメ、ゼッタイ - Babymetal

Silver is an interesting character, being both gentle and fierce simultaneously, which is well-encapsulated in Babymetal's music. The lyrics to this song also are akin to Silver's worldview, and his wish for balance, harmony, and connection.

Listens to: Over the Edge - Sarah Jarosz

I think Silver would listen to softer music, probably a lot of folk, bluegrass, and country music. and, like Jade, he would especially love songs about nature and the outdoors. It just seems like it would suit him!  However, I also think he shares a lot of his father's taste in music, resulting in some very strange playlists...

Sebek

Represented by: Soap - The Oh Hellos

Sebek seems to struggle a lot with his mixed identity, outright rejecting half of his heritage. (I think that's something he will learn to accept at some point in the future, and be able to become even stronger in himself and his identity as a result.) However, Sebek is also a bold, determined individual, and truly cares deeply for those he loves and respects... even if he may not outwardly show it.

Listens to: String Quartet No. 6 in F Minor, Op. 80, MWV R37: II: Allegro assai - Felix Mendelssohn, Quatuor Ébène

Because I think Malleus favours classical string music, I also think that Sebek would believe that he should also listen to similar music (as it is obviously superior!) And while he does enjoy many classical pieces, especially Mendelssohn's compositions, it would probably not be Sebek's preferred music in most situations, even if he does listen to it often.

Bonus - Prefers to listen to: Oscar Wilde Gets Out - Elton John

I'm not totally sure why, but I think Sebek would really like music by Elton John! I think that the softer pop rock sound would be something he would enjoy. Oscar Wilde Gets Out would definitely appeal to Sebek, for the literary allusions and references if nothing else.

Time to share some Starry lore because I’ve got a cute scene in mind. I love to vocal stim, sounds, phrases, but particularly songs. I’ll hear a song that feels just right and I’ll sit and chew it for hours til my throat’s sore. Currently favorite is The Valentine in Starfield (Is it still a sea shanty if it’s in space?). The reason I bring this fun fact up is because I can just see myself sitting for hours stimming with boys over new songs. Especially if it’s any new pieces for the theater. While the scripts and lyrics are predesigned by Fazbear, there’s something unquestionably their’s in performance that make it worth repeating. Worth remembering. Humming through daily tasks. Parroting their tone, their voice. Another sign of their existence that’s more then the capacity to destroy, then just simple property… They do end up being slightly upset when the Glamrocks try to introduce their songs to stimming sessions. (Sun/Moon: “That’s my human bonding time :(“ Monty: “Get cooler song selections then Sock and Buskin.” Freddy: “Pls do not misuse google search privileges to make insults.”)

One of the three absentmindedly starts a song and the others join in almost immediately. Unless it's a headache day, the backstage is never silent between those three, there's always a bit of humming or singing or even just echolalia.

Back to BaL! Sometimes, for fun, all 3 purposefully mess with the cadence or pitch, either to make each other laugh or just to get creative or because it sounds nice, and they end up liking something and it's like "!!!!"

When they sing that version later, it feels like theirs -- like it's those moments spent together. Proof of their existence and how it affects the world around them positively. Reminders that they're loved, and they love (in a cosmic kind of way, but also it's a self insert so fuck it we BaLl (aaaay finally used the joke @lavenoon fgjdfklgjld).

Also yeee I can see them being really, ACTUALLY insulted when one of the animatronics, who doesn't know because those little sing-stimming sessions are private with Y/N, jokes about how those songs are lame and they should be singing some of theirs instead because they're catchier. Oof

Which, just now, made me realize that BaL Sun's anger runs cold, so he just goes totally silent, straightens up and get that intense stare. Maybe Moon's even the one who talks through the speaker to deflect and does that overly-sweet anger of like "Catchy, huh? Hopefully we don't catch those inflated egos of yours -- there's barely enough space for all of us and your big heads as it is! We'll come back later~!" to excuse themselves (and then prank them to hell and back of course! But there's no proof : )) ) (ALSO OH MY GOD SOCK AND BUSKIN THAT'S FUCKING GOLD. THAT'S SO CANON NOW AND THE BOYS THINK IT'S HILARIOUS)

Back to the singing, I think that another thing that they do especially well is that they can sing at the same time, so even for solos they can add back vocals to each other, or play around with the pitch since they do-and-don't share a processor and can adapt in microseconds -- wait actually they can definitely sing rounds, too!!

Oh my god now I'm imagining them singing rounds with vastly different moods at the same time, perfectly calibrated so that both of them come out loud and clear and also enhance each other's -- lining up or losing one of their voices at just the right moment to be chilling. It's like you're getting the song and the reprise but both at once

while i'm here: i have been on sort of a mild classical musical kick since seeing tar, which was great and which also reminded me that classical music is good, which led me to the subsequent revelation that i can listen to classical music including opera while doing kinds of work that are too demanding for me to listen to english-language pop [meaning all non classical not just like top 40 and the electrosad spotify girlies] music (and if the kpop explosion has taught me personally one thing it's that lyrics are a MUCH bigger part of my pop listening experience than i thought they were - i've never listened to a kpop song i managed to find memorable or distinctive in any capacity and i have to assume that's because what the words say is actually a major part of how i engage with songs - to my own surprise!!!). it's totally possible this phase will extinguish itself before i run myself out of the small staple of things i already like because i have some kind of personal experience with them that let me get to know them (playing them badly on the piano, singing them badly in high school, stage managing them mediocrely in college) or in some cases because they are just Super Fucking Famous and have Penetrated. but in case i don't! i am open to suggestions any classical heads would have. but like suggestions for the basic bitches of the classical world, please. suggestions for the girlies whose favorite arias are still "un bel di" from butterfly and the queen of the night area from magic flute. girlies who are like, wow have you heard about this guy VERDI? (the main thing i have been listening to in these moods is really just the last ten or so minutes of act three of otello - from right before he strikes desdemona to the ground - if you know you know!!! the greatest ten minutes in music history maybe). girlies who still go wild for rachmaninoff's prelude in c-sharp minor and think the first movement of the moonlight sonata is exactly hyped enough. (my choral faves are i think a little more eclectic although equally Basic at heart, since they all come from the set of "things selected by a moderately ambitious music department at a private high school but not one with like a famous performing arts program or anything": faure's requiem, haydn's te deum, the famous parts of messiah, anything palestrina. in the two months or so the chamber choir spent learning our way around britten's five flower songs i did eventually come to appreciate it - we had a conversation, several of us, towards the end actually, where we realized somewhere in listening to recordings and plucking out our parts over and over our ear-brains had adjusted and it actually sounded to us like music now, and when i listened to a recording a year or so later i truly could not recall what i had once and for a prolonged time found so strange and off-putting about them, and was really grateful to have gotten that experience because i felt like it taught me something important about like, how music works and how art changes and that some things are made to be appreciated by people who have some visceral even if inarticulable sense of the boundaries they're pushing at, who know what a certain type of music sounds like for example enough to be surprised by the specific ways this doesn't sound like that, and how if you have enough music in you that surprise can go from "wrong" to "neat," and how that applies to everything probably and it's both ok for people to make stuff that can only be liked by people already in love to some degree with the form it's playing around in and also ok for me to not be sophisticated enough to enjoy it, which is why there are many movies in particular where i'm like This Simply Seems Engaged In A Project Best Assessed By Someone Who Has Watched A Lot More Movies Than Me - but, like, i wouldn't listen to britten on purpose, because i like it when classical music is pretty. basic!!!)

🎶 for music I listen to whilst I write... it's a mix-up for me. I think I write/work best in complete silence, but also, when I put music on, I can achieve that same concentration and tune the music out as subconscious white noise? I try to listen to whatever suits the mood - for persona 4 (golden) or adayu, I like looping a corner of memories like a madman. for my brief forray into tommary, the teen wolf song who are you, really as well as this other one called blood in the cut were all I listened to for an entire winter and then some, though I never ended up posting any of it, haha. for my invisible era of eobarry in the flash fandom, the song another way out thanks to this one edit made the song everything for me. for more amoral enemies to lovers pairings, my go-to is this foe yay playlist I've had for over half a decade on spotify. this is the one I've been looping most as of late, and they're all made of songs I particularly liked from several of this one-sided spy/sniper fic's ambience playlists on 8tracks. for alex rider, it's got to be these three playlists for june, july, and august when I first got into the fandom and was incredibly hyperfixated on ar and yalex. for any complicated pairing ever, the song make me wanna die—courtesy of an ancient steter amv on youtube that I can no longer find probably because it’s long gone—is blast it at full volume and embrace the emo type vibe. sorry for all the links sdkfjsklsjdf if you can't tell, I'm super invested in answering everyone's asks!!

🤩 favorite character to write? I'm quite a snarky, blunt, and sarcastic person IRL and I've got plenty of one-liners to spare which also means characters ready to quip at any and all times are both the easiest to write and my favorites. I've not published any yet, but I've got several WIPs featuring your friendly neighborhood spiderman that have convinced me writing peter parker is nothing short of fun, though his quips don't usually have as much mean-spirited bite behind them. likewise I haven't posted anything for teen wolf, but stiles is the same way except that he can be a little bit meaner and mean it, too. lastly, alex rider my beloved and his matter-of-factly one-liners. canonically he's all "it looks like I sleighed him" or in response to a certain someone being crushed, "I'd have been disappointed, too." they come so naturally to me when I'm writing, and it's super fun to reread lines that seem to fit so well for the characters!

🤭 according to ao3, my most used tags are light angst... followed by angst, LOL. my personal favorite tag to use, however, is the "gen or pre-slash" tag, thanks to suzie. ever since I discovered its existence, I've been using it profusely in all my fics that lean more toward gen than slash. it's a gen fic according to the relationships, pairings, and orientations tag, yes, but that gen or pre-slash tag I've slapped on is me telling everyone to come get a pair of slash goggles free of charge, if they'd like. like those people who hand out opera glasses at the opera. it feels like the exact opposite of those "don't read this as a ship fic" warnings hahaha. it's gen, but also feel free to read it as slashy as you'd like!! I adore this tag.

The last song that I listened to is Asking the Heaven by Liu Yuning, an opening song from Word of Honor. When you're utterly obsessed with a show it's impossible to ignore the OSTs, right? So, yeah.
