So it’s been a year…

One year since Disney released episode 1 season 3 of The Mandalorian

One year since I published chapter 1 of Be-All And Endor

I don’t really remember much of the first 20 weeks of that year, just that it was a flurry of proofreading and finalising and uploading (the hard parts) and comment reading and new friend making and massively appreciating (the wonderful parts).

Proofing and publishing 2 chapters a week with average lengths of around 10k words was exhausting. But for the first 8 of those weeks I had Din Djarin on the screen (intermittently *ahem* but this isn’t a post about the quality of s3) and for the rest of the year I had my readers leaving comments and sending messages, and it was… overwhelmingly the best year of my life.

I mean that. The best year. Ever. Because of you. Any of you, all of you, if you’ve ever even just clicked on my fic and given it chance, you’ve raised the hits on it. Even seeing that metric tick up has made me so thankful.

Because I didn’t think I could write. I always wanted to be an author but never believed in myself.

I did an English degree with writing in mind, but told myself nobody ever does anything with an English degree. I took creative writing modules, and when the published author who ran the class gave me scathing feedback, my dream fully died. I got an okay grade, hardly anything to be proud of, and I graduated and went to work in another industry.

I suffered from clinical depression.

One day many years later, I found a favourite author online and messaged him to ask when his fourth novel in a series was being published, and (emboldened by the anonymity of being online) cheekily offered to proofread it for him. Except he took me seriously and sent me the prologue to see what I could do. Like, for a real book you can buy on Amazon. After feeling sick for two whole days I went all Autistic Obsession on it and sent him back the most thoroughly proofed bit of writing anyone had ever seen. And I got the job. (I say ‘job’, I’d volunteered for free in exchange for the privilege of reading it in advance, so I can only ever call it semi-professional since I didn’t earn from it).

This, amongst other things, lifted me from my depression. I came off the pills and felt happier, more creative. Once the proofing was completed, the author encouraged me to write my own stuff, but whilst I’d gained some confidence… my brain was empty. I had no clamouring stories to get down on the page, no gems ready to polish.

Then in summer 2021, a friend sat me down and showed me the first 3 episodes of the Mandalorian. And my brain chemistry was instantly altered. I binge-watched the first two seasons, by the end of which I was unequivocally in love with Din Djarin, and then I binge-watched them again.

Around that time, I moved to a different country. Well, Wales is still the UK, but it’s a different country to England, and I was now 170 miles away from my friends. I went because as a single woman on a middling salary, London is too expensive to live in and having rid myself of an overbearing long term relationship, I was NOT keen to get into another one just to pay the bills. The pandemic meant I could work remotely, so I upped sticks and moved to Cardiff, resolving to visit my office in London (and my friends) once a month. It’s 2 hours by train, totally doable.

So what to do with all the spare time I suddenly had?

By Easter 2022 I’d started writing. 9 months later (yes, it’s my actual baby), Be-All And Endor was complete and I began publishing alongside season 3’s release.

Now… it has over 62.k views and 1.2k kudos 🥹🤯

Did I think it would be this popular? No way. I can’t even believe it now. I still see SO much wrong with it, which is why I’m still proofreading and editing it.

A professional proofread/edit takes a long time, and if you’re wondering what I’m doing to it, it involves the following:

Checking for things like clichés, non-inclusive language

Checking all adverbs to see if a better word can be used (e.g. ‘bellows’ instead of ‘shouts loudly’… adverbs usually end in -ly and it’s not good to overuse them)

Rephrasing any passive sentences (simply put: ‘the ship is flown by Din’ is passive; ‘Din flies the ship’ is active)

Reducing average sentence length (shorter sentences are easier to read)

Going through every single damn polysyllabic word (e.g. anything that has more than 3-syllables) and seeing if a shorter synonym can be found (this helps the rhythm, as too many long words slows things down and can make readers stumble… and I use them a lot 😖)

Checking the 50 most frequently used words and seeing if I can find synonyms for those (helps give more variety in the language)

Ensuring Din’s name isn’t overused or underused, and adding epithets (e.g. ‘the hunter’ or ‘your Mandalorian’) where it’s overused but it’s too confusing to just say ‘he’/‘him’

These are the big things, but there’s more too - I’m streamlining decisions I made to use certain phrasings throughout; tweaking Din’s word choice here and there to ensure his voice is captured the best way possible; revamping some of the photos. And with all the tiny tweaks, it’s slowly padding things out too… when publishing was done it was 393k, now it’s 403k, although it’s not extra content as such, just better described.

I’m up to chapter 13 so far, and I’ll probably be doing this for another 2 years to get through all 40, because (a) I want to write other things too so that slows down the proofing, and (b) I so badly want to be proud of this project… everyone’s telling me I should be, and I am in a way… but it’s more gratitude to others than pride in myself… and I feel like if I get this proofing done and finally have a story I’m truly happy with, I can at last let myself be proud of what I achieved here.

I confess, I’m so envious of those who can post something without obsessing over it. I know it’s a facet of my autism, and I’ve long since accepted that my neurodivergent brain will not let me be cool about things other people are cool about. If I’ve learned anything, it’s that I should turn it to my advantage, so okay… I’m gonna make this fic the same quality as a published book on your bookshelf. And meanwhile I’m gonna enjoy and love all the fics that people can write and publish with far greater speed than I can, because the greatest thing about this fandom is that every contribution is worthy of appreciation, no matter the author’s experience or writing method. Quality fic isn’t synonymous with proofreading, and I hope it’s clear that I’m describing my obsession with perfecting my own writing, not other people’s. I’ve read so many amazing authors on here, and I want them all to know how much I love their work (any recs are from the bottom of my heart).

So anyway, this long and rambling post has turned into something unintended… I guess you now have some insight into my mind and the origins of Be-All And Endor and the future of it. Not what I meant to do, but I’ll leave it in for context.

Because the real reason I started writing this diatribe was because I wanted to express my true and undying gratitude to everyone who has ever read, commented, or left kudos on my fic over on AO3, and/or messaged me, followed me, interacted with me, or reblogged my masterlist here on tumblr 🧡💚

I know I am insanely lucky to have received the level of support I have, and I don’t take that for granted at all. I want to give back to this fandom, and I love reading and reccing other people’s fics, meeting new moots, and hopefully soon I’ll be publishing new fics for you all to read too. Fresh material is percolating, so it won’t be too long now.

today is 4 march 2021 (lockdown 3.0, day 59), it’s 8pm.

it’s a wrestle-with-my-privilege day.

i was listening to this newscast explaining amazon’s efforts to block unionisation plans by their employees in the us. this, and i cannot stress this enough, IS SUPREMELY ILLEGAL EVERYWHERE IN THE EU (as far as i know). corporations CANNOT interfere in ANY WAY when their employees create or join a union here - wait, this is not the eu anymore - in the eu and the uk. however amazon has been hiring unionisation blocker consultants or whatever the fuck they’re called and paying them 32 000 moneys A DAY, when we know that egghead bezos, bald amazon darth vader, made 75 BILLION DOLLARS in 2020. during. a. pandemic. and the people who are brave and angry enough to put up a fight against amazon’s ridiculous work conditions get... warnings from their supervisors? threats and intimidation? for wanting to be treated fairly? how does this make sense? how is this not an incredibly easy moral choice? i hate it i hate it i hate it i hate it i hate that this is happening in this world. this is my world too and i don’t want that abhorrence in it.

i’ve also been talking to the mom of the kid i’m babysitting. she’s a single parent and has a good salary, but it’s not a lot in london with a child. in the company she works for, she’s seen that a good university degree can open a lot of doors, so she’s understandably worried about getting her kid into a good school. here in the uk, that’s very much a ‘where you live’ or a class thing - or money really. isn’t it all the same thing?

i hate that idea. i don’t want to buy into this bullshit system of class, money and influence, because that’s not how it’s supposed to be. i want to believe that it doesn’t matter what school you go to and that it doesn’t matter what university you go to. what matters is you becoming and being a person who is good at being a person for yourself and for others.

but of course i can think and say that... because i’m very privileged.

all that becoming a person who is good at being a person is only possible if you have a roof over your head, food on the table and time and a job that doesn’t suck the life out of you. i have that and more. and i think everybody should have that, no questions asked. i hate that this will make me sound like a naive idealist to some people.

i grew up in a family that had no political awareness to speak of. one of my parents especially holds very strong spiritual beliefs that i can only describe as neo-liberal - meaning that the self is at the centre of everything. you should lead by example, you should be the change you want to see in the world, your thoughts manifest what you imagine so manifest what you want out of life and manifest the world you want to live in.

increasingly, through lived experience and ongoing world events like the pandemic and climate change and the anti-racist movement, i find myself more and more repulsed by this way of seeing things. there is some wisdom in there, i’m not disputing that, but we live here on earth, together. people of colour cannot manifest racim away. struggling parents cannot manifest better jobs out of thin air. us amazon employees cannot manifest bezos giving them a fair wage. every single problem that plagues us is bigger than any one person - except, i guess, the matter of bezos (what does he do all day that he gets paid millions of dollars per second anyway? if this keeps going he’ll start taking himself for a god. nobody should have that much power). together. that’s where all our solutions will come from.

it’s so hard. it’s so hard to do anything where a lot of people need to agree on a solution. it’s hard to know where to start when you feel like a grain of sand on the vast, vast beach of existence. but we have to start. i have to start.

this is part of a daily practice i’m encouraging myself to do for the duration of the third UK lockdown. i’m taking some time to note where i am each day, letting myself sit with what comes up without judgement or pressure. feel free to join in!

Lockdown Diary Part 8

A personal account during the lockdown in the UK due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

23/03/2020 8:30pm Boris Johnson, UK Prime Minister, gives a live address to the nation to, effectively, put the country on lockdown to stem the spread of the deadly coronavirus strain, Covid-19.

Many of us have been self-isolating for days but this latest development within the UK in reaction to the pandemic feels very serious and very scary. I decided to keep a simple diary and where better but online.

Day 211: I stayed up till 5am last night. The last thing I watched was Ronny Chieng, a Malaysian comic in the states. It was a Netflix comedy special and bloody funny. Other than that, a quiet night, nowhere near as fucked as Friday night. As I type, I am about to finish off spicy af sausage cassserole for tea and watch a film - all quite sedate. I’ve work tomorrow, after all!

Day 212: Every time I try and watch something on Amazon Prime, it errors or doesn’t load so I have to uninstall and reinstall, which is a pain the fucking arse. Glad I don’t pay for it. I watched half of the Tom Hanks film last night, A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood, based on a real life children’s TV actor. It’s good but weird. I’ll finish it tonight. Jo Broom called and told me (well, reminded me of, actually) some good info, especially about insulin lasting 4 hours and the liver producing sugar for when you wake up). Day 213: I didn’t watch the rest of that Tom Hanks film last night, doing so right now. I got a call @5.30pm from Tall Tom asking to pop round which he did (social-distancing at the front door). He dropped of a canvas print he’d ordered of on eof my pictures from FB. Fucking gobsmacked! That’s how much he likes them. I am still in shock. What a brilliant thing to do! Day 214: Finished A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood last night, I enjoyed it. Today has been standard. Half way through the third week back from furlough and, while I am still very glad to be working, I now also relish pasrt of being paid 80% for fuck all! My walks have been tentative today, I have done something to my right ankle, it feels sore but OK when walking at pace. My phone and Google Fit are playing up - I am suddenly walking 8km/h! Day 215: Phoned Dad - Rita sent an email a couple of days ago telling of a lump in his ear which he had removed and they are going to check for cancer. When I spoke with him it was usual dad - nothing to worry about. He spoke very highly of the staff at Stamford Hospital where he had it done. They took skin from his nesxk to put on his ear lobe where they performed the op. I had pie and veg tonight. It’s a real change and I am stuffed as I type this. SB pee-ed me off at work big time late this afternoon. Diary updated! Day 216: Dan’s in court today for his drink driving escapade. I think he’s pleading not guilty - I’m not sure, neither has he been each time I have talked to him about it. It was scheduled at 4pm and he’s meant to let me know how it went. As I type, it’s just gone 9pm. Fuck knows what’s happening. I guess he’ll let me know in his own time. Meanwhile, work was OK, nothing hectic, I am on my first Friday beer, just about to eat meatballs and pasta and watch Taxi, a film written by Luc Besson. End of my 3rd week back and it’s a bit like I wasn’t furloughed for 6 months!

Day 217: I switched off that Taxi film after 30 minutes. It was bollocks. Dan got a 20 month ban (reduced to 15, if he does a course, which he says he will) and £1100 fine. At least it’s over and done with now. I got up at gone 2pm today. I have to cut this late sleeping habit out at the weekends. That being said, it’s 8.40pm, just about to dive in the shower, eat and then get on it. Clocks go back later so I’ve an extra hour to play with!

Day 218: Still managed to stay up stupidly late last night, up at before 1pm (but in real terms, that’s just before 2pm!) Had a video chat with Fog - I was meant to go up to his yesterday to listen to the footy but, ‘cos I was up so late, I didn’t. Anyway, during our chat, we’ve decidied to go to Honolulu when it’s safe, specifically to go to McDs. It was a bizarre conversation - I can’t actually remember the details!

Day 219: The lady (I think it’s a lady) from the Oundle Chronicle emailed to say she didn’t think William (the student) has contacted me (he has but is fucking useless), so she’s found some questions for me to answer and wants me to pick my favourite 4 (hi-res) photos. I’ve written a couple of paragraphs that answer her questions and I was to pick photos that have had the most likes on FB - finding that info out, without trawling back over my posts, is easier said than done! Got the car tyres sorted today - an advisory from the MOT that Julian did last week.. I do like Oundle Tyre and Exhaust centre. Work was fine. Marke had to deal with Eileen Baxter and chatted to me about it. I had it all the week before last. She’s delightful but the least IT savvy person I have ever known in a workplace whereby a computer is integral to the role!

Day 220: I’ve been doing press-ups and toe tocuhes after each exercise for a little while now. 7 press-ups, doesn’t sound much but when I did it before and rapidly increased the numbers (up to 22), it played havoc with my shoulder which I thought was becoming frozen. So, I will icrease the amount slowly. I can just about touch my toes now. When I started, I barely got past my fucking knees! Work was standard today and I had an interesting chat with a recruiter about a job at Jagex, a computer game firm responsible for Runescape which is, apparently, a big deal. Posh playing tonight. At one point, when leading at home to Burton we were top. Now it’s 2-2 with minutes to go and we’re third with fucking Lincoln top. Day 221: I sent an email to Shirley from HR (re) asking about the salary discrepancy between mine and Mark’s. She’s going to talk to me tomorrow about it. I had a lomng chat with Barrzy tonight, always good to catch up and reminisce. I’ve just had two sausage rolls (on the cheap shelf from Co-Op, Dauphinoise dotatoes (ditto), mixed green veg and onion gravy for tea and I am fucking stuffed.

Day 222: Typing at gone 4pm on day 223! Had a meet with Shirley. No dice on the pay until it can be reviewed next year. All pay reviews are on hold. She explained that the salary offer was based on available budget rather than a pay grade or bench mark. Day 223: Typing this very late on day 224. Usual Friday. I rang him to let him know I was not being serious on FB and we chatted for 30 mins or so. Top man. still, it does remian that I am missing a beer this Friday - roll on tomorrow night!

Eyes on the prize I guess, though he is looking forward to a break back in the UK in June, when he is going to be exploring a job opportunity with a friend of his.

Which kinda suggests he is not seeing living in DC as a longer term prospect. Though I can't say that I blame him much - he doesn't have any friends or life here currently. It started to encourage people to sell more than just collectibles, and quickly became a massive site where you could sell anything, large or small. Unlike other sites, though, eBay survived the end of the boom, and is still going strong today.

1999 saw eBay go worldwide, launching sites in the UK, Australia and Germany. eBay bought half.com, an Amazon-like online retailer, in the year 2000 – the same year it introduced Buy it Now – and bought PayPal, an online payment service, in 2002.

Pierre Omidyar has now earned an estimated $3 billion from eBay, and still serves as Chairman of the Board. Oddly enough, he keeps a personal weblog at http://pierre.typepad.com. There are now literally millions of items bought and sold every day on eBay, all over the world. In plenty of time: the need for slower supply chains

There are shortages of lots of things at the moment: shipping and freight, computer chips (with a knock-on effect on cars and other products now that chips are in everything), oil and petrol (thanks to hackers), rare earth metals (used in chips and batteries). And so on. And the flow of goods is slower (covid and brexit).

For over 50 years the world has been optimised for the speedy, predictable and efficient delivery of cheaper products. But the world is becoming less predictable. So maybe *optimising* is the wrong approach for the future - because just in time may end up looking like just about to break. Maybe supply chains need to run slower and fatter: more slack, more give in the systems, more resilience. More spare parts in the inventory, more stock on the shelves and on the balance sheet: demand for warehouse space surges in the UK.

Walmart losing ground

Walmart says its grocery business is "rapidly" losing ground to competitors. A leaked memo outlines that it’s getting ever harder to stay on top. It’s not a surprise that discounters have grown faster, and that Amazon is catching up in general retail. But Instacart approaching parity with Walmart in online grocery is notable.

Again, the background is an unpredictable world - the pace of change is higher, driven by technology, capital, the virus and looming in the background climate. 2PM reckons that Walmart needs to invest in winning and retaining customers for Walmart+ (an unlimited free delivery membership programme a bit like Prime). And empower stores and staff “to be able to fulfill these orders, giving customers more options and better service. A lack of investment in its store employees, many of whom don’t receive benefits and rely on erratic scheduling, would sink Walmart’s subscription strategy”.

Two thoughts:

Could supporting unionisation offer a valuable difference, one that Amazon couldn’t stomach?

Should Walmart buy Fedex to build out its logistics infrastructure, before someone online like Shopify does?

Elsewhere: New 'Russian Lidl' supermarket to open in Yorkshire. Mere (the European brand for Svetofor) says it will be the cheapest supermarket in the country.

Rapid grocery delivery

US rapid grocery delivery co Gopuff is buying the UK’s Fancy. Others in the UK: Getir, Gorillas, Dija, Weezy, Zapp. Eventually one or two of these may get enough scale to consolidate.

Southern Co-op extends Snappy Shopper home deliveries to new areas - Co-operative News. The retailer has filled nearly 10,000 orders through the partnership. (Related: Sainsbury's ex-boss invested in Snappy Shopper recently.)

Amazon expands in-garage delivery service - this piece is also a decent summary of the state of in-home/in-garage grocery delivery by others like Walmart.

Buy Now Pay Later says it increases order value 85%

“When retailers remove price as a barrier, everybody wins. That’s why businesses that offer Affirm’s pay-over-time solutions see an 85% increase in average order value and a 20% lift in repeat purchasing on average.”

That’s from an advert by Affirm, a “buy now pay later” financing company. The general model for financing used to be lending - charge the consumer an interest rate. The new general model of retail financing reverses that. Now a BNPL company like Klarna, AfterPay or Affirm will make a 0% loan to the consumer, and charge a fee to the retailer because, unlike Some Bank’s credit card, BNPL is a payment channel that can increase sales value and volume.

The other key innovation seems to be having enough data that you can pre-approve customers in the shopping basket checkout itself, accepted with a click. The shopper can try the goods at home before the first payment is taken. Not all is rosy with BNPL of course - you can see that it could amplify problem debt.

eBay: The First 10 Years.

Yes, you read that correctly: ten years. eBay was created in September 1995, by a man called Pierre Omidyar, who was living in San Jose. He wanted his site - then called 'AuctionWeb' - to be an online marketplace, and wrote the first code for it in one weekend. It was one of the first websites of its kind in the world. The name 'eBay' comes from the domain Omidyar used for his site. His company's name was Echo Bay, and the 'eBay AuctionWeb' was originally just one part of Echo Bay's website at ebay.com. The first thing ever sold on the site was Omidyar's broken laser pointer, which he got $ 14 for.
