31 Days Idol Challenge - Oliver Riedel

Day 29: At Award Ceremony

One thing I really like about photos of Rammstein from award ceremonies, is how they dress. I love how they just seem to all put on whatever they feel like, so that the more or less always have at least one 'odd man out'.

My photo of choice is this group shot from 1998 Echo Awards, because I really like how Oliver went with a choker. Photo by Axel Kirschof.

I feel like it's appropriate to add a passage from Flake's book Heute hat die Welt Geburtstag (It's the World's Birthday Today), where he wrote about when the band got nominated for their first Echo Award. It is such a good example of "six inexperienced East Germans entering the celebrity circus":

Beforehand we had long conversations about what we should wear. We definitely wanted to all wear the same thing so that people would see we were a single entity. Since this was the first time we'd been invited, we got there on time. On time meant two hours too early. When we walked down the red carpet, there was of course not the slightest reaction from the audience, which wasn't bad, however. The only person who recognized us was the security guard for Die Toten Hosen, who were also nominated and of course actually received an award. We attached ourselves to Nena's manager, whom we knew from the industry tour. We stood around in the lobby with him for hours and were horribly thirsty. Then the ceremony finally started and we thought it was all very exciting. Otto Waalkes was sitting in front of us. I stared at the back of his head the whole time. I thought back to how, when I was a kid, I would go over to our neighbor's place just to watch the Otto Show. Every single gag got rehashed all over school the next day, and I didn't want to be left out. And now I could practically touch him. I was so excited my palms were sweating. All the nominees were introduced with a short film. When they finally showed our film, there was absolutely no applause since of course no one knew who we were. There was only bored silence. I think Aerosmith got the prize. We realized that we'd gotten all dressed up for nothing and felt appropriately foolish. Thankfully though, there was a giant afterparty. We hadn't known about that either. There we could eat and drink as much as we wanted and didn't have to pay. We weren't the only ones who got exorbitantly drunk; those who were still there at four stayed till six. Moses Pelham broke Stefan Raab's nose. The next day, a bunch of zombies stood freezing on the train platform, waiting for the train with their Echos in their hands. Or not, in our case. Then two years later, we got the award. We stood there on stage like six bumps on a log and didn't know what to say. Under no circumstances did we want to toss out an embarrassing litany of thank yous. When it was my turn at the mic, I just talked about my vacation in Sri Lanka - I'd just gotten back two days earlier and was still overflowing with impressions. Plus, while the boring ceremony was going on, Ben Becker had been teaching us that drinking vodka mixed with tonic water was very refreshing. The trophy they handed us was I guess supposed to represent a sound wave - I mean, I don't know what an echo looks like, technically speaking - and it was pretty heavy. It was an unwieldy thing to have to hold onto at the party afterward, so I just left it sitting around somewhere.

do you have any online resources for Balkan books? i'm learning croatian so it would be cool to practice reading actual books instead of just balkan twitter

balkandownload.org , knjige.club and iirc libgen has some croatian and serbian things

go crazy :) if u want croatian book reccs too, from our authors id reccommend anything by ivica ivanišević (my fav is "primavera", esp since its very classic dalmatian setting) and renato baretić. baretić's "osmi povjerenik" is a cult book, but since it uses a lot of dialect, and a made up dialect too, it might be too advanced. "hotel grand" is also a fantastic book of his, that one might be easier to get through.

if you want classics, one of my favorite book series is "grička vještica" by marija jurić zagorka (the first croatian female journalist). its 7 books, with plot taking place during maria theresa's rule of hungary, but the speed and the twists are like a modern netflix show. she did the "enemies to lovers" trope back in like the 1910. and she and jane austen are the only people ive ever liked it from. ive read all the books like 5 times, and insisted my sister is named Nera after the main character. if netflix producers read this, they would sign the production papers within 10 seconds of finishing the books. unlike krleža, she wrote in a quite simple style and language (tho there is nothing simple about croatian anywhere i guess).

if you want to read some poetry i recc dobriša cesarić - he is one of the most famous croatian poets, and his poems are simple but with incredible flow. you can also find the texts online without downloading. just google dobriša cesarić pjesme. :) "balada iz predgrađa" is one of his best ones. "voćka poslije kiše" is something every single croat can quote.

grigor vitez was also a wonderful poet but he wrote for children - idk what level youre at, but that might be a good start too! his poems are beautiful. "kad bi drveće hodalo", for example.

on topic of poetry, since this is a communist and antifascist blog, i recc you the main poem of yugoslavia: desanka maksimović's "krvava bajka" about genocide in kragujevac. its short and you can find it on wikipedia.

from recent books which were translated to croatian i rly enjoyed nita prose's "maid" and from this french author "fresh water for flowers" (too tired to remember her name rn). anthony doerrs "the light we cannot see" is a bit reactionary but still a great read. "the cathedral" (cant remember the author rn) also won me over.

if you want to watch a good movie i recc "svećenikova djeca", if you can find the torrent. idt i was able to last time when i wanted to watch it. :/

from bands, if you want to hear some dalmatian music and accents, i reccommend daleka obala, tutti frutti band, dino dvornik ("afrika" and "manijak" are bangers), oliver dragojević (listen to "nadalina" its super cool!), TBF ("genije" plays in my head always) and if u wanna see the traditional split dance just search "splitsko kolo" on youtube :)

i can also just send you my own book if u wanna read that lol (im a published author in croatia, and a class traitor for advocating book piracy here on tumblr i guess) . it does use some dalmatian slang tho.

So, you write songs? That's amazing! I watched the videos of, I'm assuming, you playing guitar and singing. They were really good ❤. I play guitar a bit, albeit badly, and I sing even worse 🤣. How long have you been playing guitar? And do you play any other instruments?

You're a communication major with a minor in broadcast journalism? What kind of job to do you want to get when you graduate? Do you plan on doing something music related?

I hope you don't mind me asking so many questions hehe.

My favorite genres of music are classic rock and early 90s grunge. Some of my favorites are Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains. Since you write music, what are some of your biggest musical inspirations?

I love animals 🥰. I have two cats and a dog. What kind of dogs and cat do you have?

yup, that was me drunk at a friend’s house last night. one of the videos is an original, the other is a cover of rich men north of richmond by oliver anthony. i’ve been playing for six years now and i also play a bit of bass, banjo, mandolin, and keyboards. honestly if it has strings i can probably pick out smth half decent on it.

as far as the major, hopefully im going into radio or music journalism while i play in a band on the side. i definitely don’t mind the questions at all!

my biggest musical inspirations are probably guns n’ roses, the dogs d’amour, rock city angels, zach bryan, and bon jovi.

i have a fat calico cat, a border collie mix, and a black lab. i can’t find a picture of my cat but these are my dogs, pearl and cane.

Abel Ferrara's version of Jack Finney's novel The Body Snatchers is nothing if not economical. The economy extends to the title: Don Siegel's 1956 version and Philip Kaufman's 1978 one were called Invasion of the Body Snatchers; Ferrara even drops the definite article. The story, too, has been pared down. Ferrara's version sets the story on a military base in Alabama instead of the urban California of the previous films. It also shifts the focus to a teenage girl, Marti Malone (Gabrielle Anwar), who comes with her family to the base when her father (Terry Kinney) is sent there by the EPA to investigate chemical pollution. The dynamic of a rebellious adolescent in a military culture is perfect for the conflict between individualism and conformity, the theme that unites all of the versions of Finney's story. In addition to her father, Marti's dysfunctional family consists of her stepmother, Carol (Meg Tilly), whom she dislikes, and her young half-brother, Andy (Reilly Muphy), who annoys her. Andy is the first to sense that something is seriously wrong in their new home when, during an art class at day care, all the other kids produce identical finger paintings. As they hold up their paintings, the teacher murmurs approvingly at each one until she comes to a halt at Andy's, which is unique. She clearly disapproves. One by one, the fact that people are being somehow replaced by identical but emotionless beings becomes clear. Ferrara is not particularly interested in the mechanics of invasion and transformation that took up more narrative space in the previous films. We get some nicely disgusting body horror scenes, but the response of Marti to the alien takeover is what drives the plot as she teams up with a handsome young helicopter pilot named Tim (Billy Wirth) to fight off the invaders. Tim's stoic military manner keeps us unsure whether he's not already one of the pod people, an ambiguity that persists until the end of the movie. Body Snatchers is a good rethinking of material whose previous versions are now considered classics. The source material was mined again for a fourth version, The invasion (Oliver Hirschbiegel, 2007), which starred Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig but bombed with the critics.

It is September! It is fall, for whatever flavour fall is for you. For me, it is the beginnings of oranges and a joint-warbling gradient of temperatures that range from the 80s to 60s. This is the shortest playlist of the year so far, but it felt complete and it was nice to loop it over the workday.

There wasn't much of an originating theme here other than the concept of school beginning, summer ending, treading into the depths of fall. I was grateful for Dead On A Sunday to drop 'Bloody September' this month (or maybe it was August as I often throw songs that aren't right for the month into future playlists) as it let me have a good dark ending for the start of October.

It looks like 'C'est la vie (Edit') is not currently on Spotify, but here it is on Youtube. Like any dance song, there are a couple of versions but the plain "(Edit)" one is what I dug.

Unlike their other albums, Boy Jr.'s Sheesh! isn't available outside of Spotify, as it was for a commercial music library, which is exciting for them! I would like their music to be in things.

Introduction

Hello there and welcome to the final chapter of this extended series of blogs looking at the musical tastes of James Bond over the last 60 years .This chapter covers those tricky titles from the Ian Fleming James Bond stories that the script writers producers and song writers had a real struggle with. Two of those tricky titles Thunderball and the Spy who loved me have been dealt with in prevous chapters of the blog.

This Chapter of the blog deals with On her Majesty’s Secret service and Octopussy.

Casting The New James Bond

In 1967, after five films, Sean Connery resigned from the role of James Bond and was not on speaking terms with Albert Broccoli during the filming of You Only Live Twice.[27] Over 400 actors, including many of the most famous performers in the Commonwealth, were considered for the role of James Bond.[17]

The confirmed front runners were Englishman John Richardson, Dutchman Hans De Vries, Australian Robert Campbell, Scotsman Anthony Rogers, Greek Giorgos Fountas[28] and Australian George Lazenby.[14] Broccoli also met with Terence Stamp about playing the part.[29] Broccoli was interested in rising star Oliver Reed but decided his public image was already too distinct.

Future Bond star Timothy Dalton was asked to audition after his appearance in The Lion in Winter but considered himself too young, as he was 25 years old and did not want to succeed Connery as Bond. In an interview in 1987 when he was playing Bond in The Living Daylights, Dalton said "I was 24-25 then, I had a good career then as a young man in films The Lion in Winter and Mr Broccoli kindly asked me if I was interested, I think I'm just too young for this role. I think Bond should be between 35 and 40, and as a 25-26 year old and I wouldn't have been right".[17]

Broccoli and Hunt eventually chose Lazenby after seeing him in a Fry's Chocolate Cream advertisement.[18] Lazenby dressed the part by sporting several sartorial Bond elements such as a Rolex Submariner wristwatch and a Savile Row suit (ordered for, but uncollected by, Connery), and going to Connery's barber at the Dorchester Hotel.[19] Broccoli noticed Lazenby as a Bond-type man based on his physique and character elements, and offered him an audition. The position was consolidated when Lazenby accidentally punched a professional wrestler, who was acting as stunt coordinator, in the face, impressing Broccoli with his ability to display aggression.[14

The film website Screenrant recently published an article called How all 6 James Bond actors compare to the Ian Fleming Iconic Book spy they said this about George Lazenby.

Lazenby only lasted one movie in the role of Bond, but he couldn’t have had a better shot at the part. The tragic On Her Majesty’s Secret Service wouldn’t have worked without anyone else in the role, and journalist Ben McIntyre argued that the actor came closest to embodying Fleming’s take on Bond in his 2008 book For Your Eyes Only. It’s easy to see where McIntyre’s argument comes from, as Lazenby’s Bond took himself more seriously than Connery's did, much like Fleming’s version of the spy. Outside an infamous fourth-wall-breaking opening gag, his storyline was also more grounded, which allowed Lazenby to embody Bond’s troubled side.

Casting the leading lady

For Tracy Draco, the producers wanted an established actress opposite neophyte Lazenby.[30] Brigitte Bardot was invited, but after she signed to appear in Shalako opposite Sean Connery, the deal fell through,[16] and Diana Rigg—who had already been the popular heroine Emma Peel in The Avengers—was cast instead.[8] Rigg said one of the reasons for accepting the role was that she always wanted to be in an epic film.[18]

The Iconic Villian in her Majesty’s secret Service

On her Majesty’s sees the return of Ernst Stavro Blofeild this time by Telly Savalas he was played Donald Pleasence in you only live twice and would be played by Charles Grey in the following film Diamonds are Forever.

Recently Screenrantly published an article on their website titled Every James Bonds Iconic Villian Ranked and for George Lazenby they chose Blofeild lets face it they couldn’t choose amybody else.

George Lazenby only ever starred in one Bond movie, so he only ever faced one Bond villain, and that movie was sandwiched into the middle of Sean Connery’s arc, so he had to share his villain with Connery. But that villain happened to be Bond’s ultimate big bad, Ernst Stavro Blofeld. Connery faced other unforgettable villains like Dr. No and Auric Goldfinger, but Blofeld was their boss. Blofeld’s portrayal in the Bond movies – particularly in You Only Live Twice – has influenced how supervillains are depicted on-screen for decades. Blofeld is the quintessential Bond villain: a diabolical criminal mastermind who’s always one step ahead of 007.

A bunch of different actors have put their own stamp on the role of Blofeld over the years. Telly Savalas played the character opposite Lazenby in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and Charles Gray played the part opposite a returning Connery in Diamonds Are Forever. But the most iconic take on the character (by far) is Donald Pleasence’s chilling performance alongside Connery in You Only Live Twice. The glint in Pleasence’s scarred eye is both mesmerizing and unsettling; he’s a captivating presence whenever he appears on-screen. Every James Bond movie villain since Pleasence’s Blofeld has been competing for the silver medal.

OHMSS A unique James Bond film

Taking over from Somebody in the lead role is difficult enough but when you take over the lead role from somebody as well known as Sean Connery in the most successful film franchise that is James Bond that task is even harder still

Considering it was it was also George Lazenby’s first lead role in a major film I thought George Lazenby’s take on James Bond in his only film was excellent On Her Majesty’s secret service is a unique film in my view in that its more of a charector piece than your usual James Bond spy story indeed more than in any other Bond film the gadgets take a backseat to the story for once and its more about the love story between James Bond and Tracey Draco than anything else

This is highlighted by the fact as well that the What Culture website picked the relationship between the too as their moment of the whole film.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service, despite George Lazenby's terrible performance as Bond, is one of the most elite installments of the series. It does many things incredibly well, but it's Bond's relationship with Tracy di Vicenzo (Diana Rigg) that really makes the film linger in one's mind.

It seems clear the film put a huge amount of effort into this part of the story - in fact, at one point, the film basically stops in order to show a very nice romantic montage of the pair set to Louis Armstrong's "We Have All the Time in the World" - and while it made for a very different film compared to its predecessors, it sure as hell paid off.

OHMSS offers up a genuinely moving, chemistry-filled romance that pulls viewers right in and is so good that not even Lazenby can ruin it. Besides, any deficiencies in his performance are counter-balanced by Diana Rigg's wonderful turn as Tracy.

In the end, the film concludes with Tracy's murder and this scene is still absolutely devastating all these years later. With this tragic ending, OHMSS basically does something similar to what No Time to Die did decades later, but it did it far better.

Screenrant published an article called Each Bond actors defining scene 6 moments that defined James Bond for George Lazenby they Chose Tracy’s death scene

George Lazenby only played Bond in one movie, but it just so happened to be one of the greatest Bond movies of all time. On Her Majesty’s Secret Service sees 007 falling in love for the first time and ends with him marrying Contessa Teresa di Vicenzo, better known as Tracy. Just as Bond seems to get a happy ending, and he heads off on his honeymoon with Tracy, his bride is gunned down by his enemies in a drive-by shooting. This is one of the saddest moments in Bond history, and Lazenby nails the raw emotions of a widowed newlywed in tears, cradling his dead wife.

Tracy was never mentioned enough in later movies, but nonetheless, in OHMSS itself this love story is easily its greatest asset, although the cinematography, action sequences and the franchise's best incarnation of Blofeld (played here by Telly Savalas) deserve mention too.

Tracy’s Death was also included in another Screenrant article titled 10 greatest James Bonds scenes ranked from worst to best landing at number 5 in their list they had this to say:

George Lazenby only appeared in one James Bond movie, and the actor had the hard job of replacing Sean Connery, the original 007 who, according to many viewers, is still the greatest to ever play the role. However, Connery’s Bond wouldn’t have worked in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, as evidenced by the movie’s strongest scene. When 007 married his love interest, Tracy (Diana Rigg), only for her to be murdered by Blofeld (Telly Savalas), the unstoppable spy experienced his most crushing defeat in the franchise’s history. Poignant and brutal, this scene marked a turning point for Bond’s unflappable screen persona.

Besides the James Bond and Tracey love story the film sees bond trying to stop Blofield spreading Germ warfair by using innocent girls which he calls his angels of death indeed the Colider film highlighted these ladies as one of the highlights of the film in their article The 16 deadliest Women in the James Bond franchise arriving on the list at number 10.

The Angels of Death are 12 extremely attractive, wealthy, and sophisticated women who were selected by Irma Bunt (see below) from various countries to assist the Head of the crime organization SPECTRE, Ernst Stavro Blofeld (Telly Savalas), in contaminating, sterilizing, and eventually ransoming the world's food supply.

“TOTAL Infertility! In plants and animals. Not just disease in a few herds, Mr. Bond. Or the loss of a single crop. But the destruction of a whole strain. Forever! If my demands are not met, I shall proceed with the systematic extinction of whole species of cereals and livestock all over the world!” - Blofeld

Though a global threat, the ladies are actually regularly brainwashed and hypnotized, unbeknownst to them, thinking they are simply being treated for their specific food allergies in a luxurious Alpine facility.

Irma Bunt played by the German actress Ilse Steppat made an appearance in the same list making number 7 in the chart so a film that a film considered by some as a flop does have some highlights this is what they had to say :

Portrayed by the German actress Ilse Steppat, Irma Bunt is the stern middle-aged subordinate of Blofeld’s who runs the “allergy institute” in the Swiss Alps, “helping” the ladies with their allergies by day, and brainwashing them in their sleep. When Bond (the underrated George Lazenby) checks into the facility as a patient, she thoroughly has his luggage inspected, and informs him she enforces strict rules on all guests, such as not disclosing last names or room numbers. But then, his cover is blown, and after a relentless car chase, there is a big explosion, causing Bond to believe Bunt is dead. However, she later turns up at his own wedding, and attempts to shoot him with an M16, but she kills his new bride instead

My thoughts on her Majestys secret service

Cinemagoers who came to see the film in 1969 most have had a big shock when they saw a more charector led story with a much more sensitive and emotional James Bond than they were used to but for me agaIn that's ok because sometimes a franchise even one like James Bond needs to take risk sometimes to stop it going stale and boring.

The film is will written and is well directored by Peter R Hunt It is the only Bond film to have been directed by him (with this serving as his directorial debut), he had served as a film editor and second unit director on previous films in the series.

OHMSS features some of the best action scenes you will ever see in a Bond film the Stock car race and ski-ing sequences being particularly good that Yard Barker published an article called the 25 Greatest set peices in the Bond highlighting the films finale at Piz Gloria.

Again, listen to Soderbergh. This is an exquisitely shot and edited set-piece that kicks off with three helicopters assaulting Blofeld’s Piz Gloria stronghold, proceeds to crosscut between a tightly staged firefight and Tracy di Vicenzo (Diana Rigg) holding her own (and eventually killing) one of Blofeld’s thugs, then concludes with a (literally) breakneck bobsled chase. Director Peter Hunt’s aerial, exterior and interior photography matches perfectly; you’re always aware of where the characters are (including Bond as he belly-slides down an icy slope, machine gun blazing), and what they’re trying to achieve. This is how it’s done.

on this evidance then its such a shame that he never any more bond films after this.

If it was up to me Lazenby should have ignored his agents wishes and stayed in the role for one more film at least then perharps audiences would have got used to his more sensitive portrayal as James Bond

Mind you I think I am right in saying if George Lazenby had continued as James Bond we would not have had the Roger Moore era of James Bond that I loved as a child so perharps you can’t have everything you want

Music

John Barry who provided the soundtrack for the film which I conisder to be his best work for Bond provided an instrumential theme tune as he had done for the first two films Dr No and From Russia with love.

Barry felt it would be difficult to compose a theme song containing the title "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" unless it were written operatically, in the style of Gilbert and Sullivan. Leslie Bricusse had considered lyrics for the title song but director Peter R. Hunt allowed an instrumental title theme in the tradition of the first two Bond films. The theme is built around a lament bass, which establishes the story as a tragedy. Barry's composition was described as "one of the best title cuts, a wordless Moog-driven monster, suitable for skiing at breakneck speed or dancing with equal abandon.

The instrumental theme for ONHMSS is a John Barry classic . It would not grace the pop charts under its own steam. the dance band The Propellerheads would release a remix of theme working with David Arnold for his album James Bond remixed. the single reached number 7 in the UK charts you can listen to it by clicking here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zN8GcRGNWe4

Barry also composed the love song "We Have All the Time in the World", with lyrics by Burt Bacharach's regular lyricist Hal David, sung by Louis Armstrong. It is heard during the Bond–Tracy courtship montage, bridging Draco's birthday party in Portugal and Bond's burglary of the Gebrüder Gumbold law office in Bern, Switzerland.

The song doesn’t appear till 30 mins into the film gentle and reflective the song was the last studio recording by Louis Armstrong and features a beautiful and thrilling string arrangement that was modifed by Barry to play on Low strings as a jaunty theme for Bond in some of the films earlier sequences one of the most interesting and symbolic uses of music in the Bond film as 007 discusses Tracey with her father and Draco suggests that her daughter needs a man to dominate her !

Barry recalled Armstrong was very ill, but recorded the song in one take. Armstrong did, however, make some further recordings in 1970 and 1971. The song was re-released in 1994, achieving the number three position during a 13-week spell in the UK charts. When it was used for a Guinness infinity beer campaign.

The song was reused for a second Bond movie, when it was used as the soundtrack for the closing credits for the 2021 release No Time to Die.

Octopussy

Octopussy is a 1983 spy film and the thirteenth in the James Bond series produced by Eon Productions. It is the sixth to star Roger Moore as the MI6 agent James Bond. It was directed by John Glen and the screenplay was written by George MacDonald Fraser, Richard Maibaum and Michael G. Wilson.

The film's title is taken from a short story in Ian Fleming's 1966 short story collection Octopussy and The Living Daylights,

I like this film a lot again as with all the Bond films I enjoy it has a good mix of action and comedy and is well written and well directored by John Glenn ( his 2nd James Bond film after (for your eyes only)

His direction of the film was picked out of the What Culture website Best Bond moments article

Octopussy, with its stubborn insistence on prioritizing cringy comedy over thrills and a generally ill-conceived plot, is definitely one of the low points of the series (and one that totally ignored what made the previous film work) but it's not a total wash-out.

If there's one person who really comes out of the film with their dignity intact, it's John Glen, who directed five Bond movies, starting with For Your Eyes Only and finishing with Licence to Kill.

Glen is definitely one of the best directors the series ever had; he was already doing great work as an editor in the franchise, and once he stepped into the director's chair, he always directed with flair and precision, delivering many stunning visuals in the process.

Once again, just like with For Your Eyes Only, Glen does a smashing job and ensured that, despite how dated the film is on a writing level, it still looks absolutely terrific - especially during the picture's aerial action scenes.

The film also has Maud Adams this time returning as Octopussy She featured at number 9 in the 10 most deadliest women in the James Bond Franchise on the Movie web website who had this to say about Octopussy

Octopussy: [Bond sneaks into her room] Good evening. I wondered when you might arrive.

Bond: So, you are the mysterious Octopussy.

Octopussy: And you are James Bond, 007, licensed to kill. Am l to be your target for tonight?

Bond: Oh no, not necessarily. Depends how much you tell me about jewelry smuggling. And why one of our agents was killed in East Berlin.

Maud Adams plays Octopussy, a powerful smuggler of rare jewels, and the leader of an ancient cult of lone, fierce, and heavily trained acrobats, all of them women, and living on a secluded island in India. Her associate is an exiled Afghan prince, Kamal Khan, who also has members of the Cult of Octopus among his servants. Octopussy will eventually join forces with Bond (Roger Moore) against her ally

Music

Rather than use the word Octopussy in the title of the song the producers of the James Bond film did the most refreashing thing and decided not to mention it all instead we got a song called All Time High.

Once again John Barry provided the Soundtrack for the film theme "All Time High" with lyricist Tim Rice. "All Time High", sung by Rita Coolidge, is one of seven musical themes in the James Bond series whose song titles do not refer to the film's title. "All Time High" spent four weeks at number one on the United States' Adult Contemporary singles chart and reached number 36 on the Billboard Hot 100.[25]

If your wondering where the title of this blog comes from it features in the 3rd James Bond film Goldfinger which is rightly seen by many as a classic Bond film and probably the best Bond film ever made. it was the first Bond film to make over a 100 million at the box office with a great mix of action comedy girls and gadgets and featured a great Goldfinger title song sung by Shirley Bassey the song itself made the top 30 in the UK charts

The Misguided Anger Of Oliver Anthony & The Working Class

Pioneering folk singer-songwriters The Almanacs, which included influential folk musician Pete Seeger, penned the protest song “Talkin’ Union” in 1941. The song is about forming a labor union, including the positives and the roadblocks that would get in the way, but it mainly is about how necessary they are. That song was written in the 1940s, but the need for unions has extended to the present day. Protest music itself is an idea that’s just as American as baseball, apple pie, and McDonald’s. A lot of these songs, as well as the ideas that these songs express, are timeless. Labor unions, for example, are just as important now as they were almost a century ago. An artist being able to express their thoughts through song is a right that’s guaranteed by the First Amendment, but that free speech works both ways. Just as an artist can release a song that has one point, they can release songs that has the opposite.

This year has seen the rise of two songs, almost back to back, that the (mainly) right side of the political spectrum are championing, more specifically Jason Aldean’s “Try That In A Small Town” and Oliver Anthony’s “Rich Men North Of Richmond.” The former song has already faded from most people’s minds, as most folks who defended the song forgot about it a couple of weeks later, and moved onto Oliver Anthony’s “Rich Men North Of Richmond.” There is something to be said for an independent artist that was a nobody a week ago suddenly blow up and have millions of plays on streaming services out of nowhere, but that’s a good topic for another piece. This piece, however, is about the complicated subject matter of the song.

At first glance, “Rich Men” is a song that aims to unite the working class against politicians and corporations that don’t pay them fairly. Lines like “I’ve been selling my soul, workin’ all day / Overtime hours for bullshit pay / So I can sit out here and waste my life away / Drag back home and drown my troubles away” make a lot of people think that. The chorus, while still having that idea, is a little less interesting, because all Anthony says is that rich men north of Richmond are bad and they want to control you. So far you’d think the song is ultimately about the blue collar worker struggling to get by, but the song takes a dramatic turn in the second and third verses that made me understand why conservatives specifically love this song.

Thanks to many Republican politicians using rhetoric that purposely divides people, there always needs to be a hypothetical “they” to blame for their problems. Well, who does Oliver Anthony blame for his? You’d think that he would blame the corporations, the politicians, or the capitalist system that they all benefit from, but instead he blames “the obese milkin’ welfare.” With lines like “Well, if you’re 5’3” and you’re 300 pounds / Taxes ought not to pay for your bags of fudge rounds,” the issues with the song start to present themselves. Anthony’s idea of blaming obese people on welfare for his woes is very odd, but it’s also very misguided. What Anthony and people that love the song don’t seem to realize that you don’t need to punch down on others to make a point. Bruce Springsteen, John Mellancamp, Tom Petty, Woody Guthrie, and Pete Seeger didn’t punch down on people to make their points about wanting to be paid equally, or their everyday struggles as blue collar Americans.

Seeing these types of songs, especially “Rich Men North Of Richmond,” getting popular, makes me wonder where other songs and artists like this are. A few of the popular heartland-rock artists of the 1970s / 1980s are still making music and regularly touring, but there aren’t modern artists in this vein that are a household name. I’ve been thinking about all of this for the last week, especially with the song debuting at number one on the Billboard 100. Personally, I have mixed feelings on the song itself, because as much as it attempts to make a great point in the first half, it’s the rest of it that leaves a very sour taste in my mouth. The song itself, looking past the controversy, is mediocre, and it sounds as amateurish as you can get. It’s still cool seeing the power that people can have on the music industry and seeing a completely independent artist rise to the top, especially about the average blue collar worker’s experience, but why him, though?

Springsteen, Petty, and Mellancamp were so popular in their time for being vivid and grounded storytellers, whether talking about themselves or characters in their music that accurately represented the average American. While Anthony’s “Rich Men” sort of does that, it just feels like he’s angry about how the way things are, and doesn’t know how to properly articulate it. This song relies more heavily on emotion, versus what he actually has to say, and maybe that’s why people are resonating with it, but there are other artists out there (especially in Appalachia) that speak more to the average American’s experience and do so in a way that doesn’t blame anyone or paint anyone else as an enemy.

A great example of an artist that should be held in the same regard as Oliver Anthony is Adeem The Artist, a country / folk singer-songwriter from North Carolina that speaks openly about their expediences as a queer and non-binary person in the South. Their last LP, 2022’s White Trash Revelry, is a record that has a lot of themes and ideas that speaks to the average (Appalachian) American’s experience, such as racism and white supremacy, the opioid epidemic, toxic masculinity, and poverty. When I listened to “Rich Men North Of Richmond,” I immediately thought about the song “Books & Records” by Adeem The Artist. That song is a much more compelling look the blue collar worker’s struggle, because it’s a very grounded song that has Adeem (or an unnamed character) having to sell their books and records just to be able to eat.

That’s a sad reality for many everyday people; they don’t want to sell their prized possessions, but surviving is much more important, so they do what they need to do. There is a warm sense of optimism at the end, however, saying that they’ll buy them back someday, which is something that “Rich Men” unfortunately lacks. Instead of providing an answer to Anthony’s grievances about being paid unfairly, and what he can do to remedy that, he points a finger at groups of people that he feels that are to blame. He ultimately shrugs and says that’s the way it is without really offering any solution, or pondering why he’s in that position. Books & Records” doesn’t punch anyone down, or blame anyone, it’s just an honest look at being poor and having to sell your books and records so you can eat.

I don’t think that “Rich Men North Of Richmond” is going to stick around in the weeks to come. A lot of the people that love the song are going to move on, just as they did with “Try That In A Small Town.” If they truly resonate with the message of being paid unfairly, and being angry with politicians, they’d protest, form labor unions, or much more simply, vote for politicians that are not going to let these corporations commit unethical and unfair business practices. The sad reality is that the same people that love this song are still going to vote for the politicians that the reasons for why they’re facing these hardships. They don’t realize that those politicians don’t care about them, and only care about their self-interests. The most powerful weapon that we have in this country is our vote, and the only way to at least attempt to upend the capitalist system that benefits the corporation and disenfranchises the average worker is to vote for the politicians that will repeal or enact laws to limit the power of these corporations.

Until that happens, more songs like “Rich Men North Of Richmond” are sure to get popular for a week or two, only for people to forget about them (and what they say), just to move onto the next guy that says the same thing in a slightly different way. The cycle is going to repeat over and over again, and that’s the way a lot of politicians want it to be. They don’t want anything to change, and they have both trained people to live with the way things are, and divided people in a way that blames their fellow Americans, instead of everyone uniting together to take them down. There are many hypothetical “theys” that politicians want to paint as the enemy for people to point their fingers at, and “Rich Men North Of Richmond” buys into that propaganda, but the real enemies are the politicians themselves and that’s who we really need to go after.

I wrote this piece last week, right as the song was starting to get traction, and I wanted to add onto it at the very end, because Anthony has come out in the days since to talk about his thoughts as the song has gotten bigger. He has come out and said he thinks it’s funny that Republicans have co-opted the song, and that it was played at the GOP debate, only because he wrote that song about people like that. He also said that he celebrates diversity, and people need to unite together instead of be torn apart. Those sentiments are fine and dandy, but those welfare lyrics still don’t sit well, nor give me the impression he loves diversity, and the fact that he hasn’t quite denounced his Republican fanbase is telling. You can say you’re an “independent” all you want, but most people that say that, they lean towards the right. It’ll be interesting to see where the song lands on the Billboard 100 this week, considering the hype has pretty much disappeared, as to be expected, but we’ll see.

Beats & Pieces Big Band - Good Days

Think of big bands and you’re most likely to think of the halcyon days of mid-twentieth-century jazz and the likes of Duke Ellington and Count Basie. This would infer that big band music is an obsolete format, a relic from decades of yore. Founded in 2008 and directed by conductor, composer, arranger, and producer Ben Cottrell, Beats & Pieces give the lie to that notion. With Good Days, their long-awaited third studio album, they show once again that big band music is a living, expressive thing, more than capable of continuing development in our own times. Put simply, there are things a big band say and do that cannot otherwise be said and done, and Beats & Pieces say and do plenty here, with exhilarating immaculacy and imagination. This ensemble swings, twenty-first century style. Good Days ranges emotionally from the funereal to the exuberant, the ecclesiastical to the profane, the pacific to the chaotic. Fleetingly, you think of Charles Mingus, Keith Tippett, Gil Evans, Charlie Haden’s Liberation Orchestra... But there’s also a post-rock undertow to many of these tracks which shows a consciousness of such contemporaries as Björk, Radiohead, or Everything Everything. PLOT DROP #3 — 𝐌𝐀𝐋𝐀 𝐓𝐄𝐌𝐏𝐎𝐑𝐀 𝐂𝐔𝐑𝐑𝐔𝐍𝐓

when the time comes, all students who signed up for the scavenger hunt portion of the night are gathered together just inside of the doors of the great hall and receive a golden bracelet that will glimmer as each group captures their coin. the students are sorted into groups of four and the head of the group ( determined at random ) is given the first location by means of PARCHMENT, only listing the location itself and no additional information on how or where they'll be able to find their clue . . .

anthony goldstein, delilah goldstein, gregory goyle, and pansy parkinson are given the location of the viaduct stone bridge.

lisa turpin, ripley jinyoung ahn, valerius snape, and elowyn prewett are given the location of the waterfall.

once the students begin searching for their first clue, they notice it’s far more difficult than it’s been in ANY of the previous years.. the clues and tasks have been challenging in the past, of course, but never have they been considered deadly . . .

nevertheless, the golden bracelets glimmer with each group that's able to gather their coins, but at a certain point they burn with words etching into the golden surface : abandon your task and return to the great hall at once. when the students are gathered back at the great hall, a hush falls over the room as headmaster dumbledore approaches the podium to speak, and it seems as though he's reluctant to dampen the night with the recent discovery.

madam rosmerta's body has been discovered on aurelius grounds by students participating in the scavenger hunt, with writing on the wall declaring MALA TEMPORA CURRUNT, seeming to be written in blood. in latin, the phrase translates to bad times are upon us.

no one is certain how long her body has been there or what the message means for wixkind, but no students who visited the music wing earlier that very day recall seeing anything out of the blue. the special guest, the minister of magic himself cornelius fudge, is also announced to have left almost immediately after hearing the news from the returning student groups.

six and seven year students are recruited to assist professors and staff to lead all students to the safety of their common rooms, and they're urged to remain in their dorms for the entirety of the night. students are overheard wondering if aurors will be called in to patrol the halls, why the minister of magic fled once he heard the news, how madame rosmerta's body came to be in the music wing, and much more on their way back to the dorms.

OOC INFORMATION :

—– THE SCAVENGER HUNT was cut short due to group ten and eleven discovering the body of madame rosmerta in the music wing, where they were supposed to encounter another task / clue. each group's members were chosen by a randomizer, as was the matching of character groups to tasks. some groups completed all of their tasks in the time before the body was discovered, and some only got partially through them.

—– CLASSES have been called off for an entire week, from november first to november eighth as aurelius is having its security tightened and protective enchantments around the castle put in place. a curfew is in effect until further notice, requiring all students to be in their respective common rooms or dorms by 7PM sharp. students will notice aurors patrolling the halls and roaming the grounds, and they might be occasionally stopped by aurors or staff to be questioned on what they're doing / where they're going.. aurelius students are asked to be cooperative and understanding, since they're only being questioned for their own good.

—– THREADS for the scavenger hunt were originally supposed to be held on discord, but we thought it might be less confusing to divvy up the tasks this way! if you'd like to hold threads taking place during the scavenger hunt for your groups, please feel free, but it's not necessary; you can also just plot through what happened with your characters based on what tasks they were delegated through messages if you'd like !

—– INJURIES during the scavenger hunt are to be expected, but for any major injuries, please get with an admin for approval! scrapes, sprains, and minor injuries that can be healed by just visiting the hospital wing are fine, but any other major injuries are subject to admin approval.
