ML Theory: Episode 22, Finale, Ladynoir, and Everything Else
This will have rocketear and finale synopsis spoilers - be warned.
I genuinely do think that the two part finale of season 4, "The Last Attack of Shadowmoth" (which is,,, a title to say the least; more on that in a bit) is gonna be so tense for a variety of reasons.
Rocketear Analysis
We have a couple of gamechanger episodes coming up. Rocketear definitely was a gamechanger as Adrien was able to realize that Alya and Nino are aware of each other's identities with Ladybug giving them permission. And he's angry about it. He knows that Ladybug lied to him about the rules, and he also knows that her being the guardian is definitely something that has led to their relationship being affected (flashbacks to a previous s4 ep when he's like it's cool if she's the guardian, as long as their partnership isn't affected - well that was some foreshadowing, wasn't it?). Honestly, seeing that as Marinette makes all the rules now as guardian, her decisions should be able to include her knowing Chat's identity. But. Chat Blanc exists, and I think that her not telling him about it and hiding it from him is a parallel to how she wanted Alya to hide the truth from Nino (obviously this failed too - Alya went behind her back to tell Nino the truth). She knows that he'd understand if she told him and its better to tell him that he may destroy everything if they knew each other's identities than left him feeling isolated and alone and at risk for literally getting akumatized. By isolating him, she's quite literally putting the world at risk for Chat Blanc 2.0, rather than her telling him something heartbreaking and being there for him so he doesn't get hurt by Shadow Moth's intentions. I think that she'll come to realize this in the finale and learn from her mistakes.
I think that in this screenshot, we got a snippet of foreshadowing of what's to come:
Tumblr media
I saw some people theorize that this is foreshadowing that Adrien's real identity is between Ladynoir, and while this could be general foreshadowing for the entirety of the show (Marinette is in love with Adrien, and that's why she can't love Chat Noir), I do think that interpretation could be misplaced here due to the tone of the episode. Instead, I believe that this is foreshadowing that Chat may reveal himself to Ladybug. After all, she literally knows the identity of literally every other person who has a miraculous, and is the guardian.
*Side note: It also reminds me a lot of Felix. Could be a reference to that? Not sure what my thoughts on that being, but it's just somehting that struck me.
Episode 22
In my mind, it would make most sense for Adrien to reveal himself in episode 22. We've been told by the people who make the show that since episode 22 is the 100th episode of the show overall, it will be incredibly serious. This episode may run the highest risk of Adrien being akumatized into Chat Blanc again, as tensions are definitely running high. However, another akumatization event could happen, and Chat could be left out again, making him angry. I think that him getting akumatized is more likely, however. This is because of his appearance in Sentibubbler - I think that's foreshadowing. After everything is taken care of, Chat Noir and Ladybug will get into an argument. Chat will tell Ladybug that he knows about Alya and Nino, and that he thinks she's a hypocrite. He was loyal to her, and now he's having his doubts about their partnership, because he doesn't even think its a partnership anymore. Ladybug is the guardian and has more secrets that she is keeping from him. She talks about Chat Blanc and tells him that him finding out her identity leads to basically the end of the world. Adrien is surprised that he was akumatized before. He then gets mad at her for literally hiding this from him when they could've taken precautions beforehand, and then could possibly assert that he doesn't know what else she's hiding from him. He also, at the same time, doesn't feel like he should be Chat Noir anymore if he poses that much of a risk to the world. He detransforms in front of her and gives her the miraculous. He tells her he won't be a problem again, and leaves.
Finale
Ladybug, of course, realizes her mistake and tries to get him back. However, over the course of 23 and 24, she is caught up with Alya and Nino's problems with them not hiding their secrets. Adrien is already scheduled to leave Paris for a couple of weeks with Lila, and Ladybug trying to persuade him to stay is basically one of the main conflicts of the final episode. Pair this with "ShadowMoth's Last Attack" and you've got a season finale. I think the name of the season finale, is, as always, a misdirect. There's no way Gabriel is getting all his miraculous taken away until season 5, as that's when the full reveal happens, so it seems like he'll return to just regular old Hawkie. I don't think it would make sense for him to be disarmed now and for next season's finale to have the full reveal. Here's the synopsis below so we can dissect it.
Shadowmoth's Last Attack
Having understood that if Ladybug always triumphs, it's thanks to her prudence, Papillombre (Shadow Moth) conceives a diabolical plan around a super villain endowed with the power to push his victims to take all risks. When Marinette learns that Adrien must leave Paris for several weeks with Lila, new muse of the Agreste brand, she is ready to do she is ready to do anything to stop him. How far will she go? Even to the fatal risk of betraying her secret identity for love? And will Adrien take the risk to finally stand up to his father?
Okay, so let's dissect this. What I said before adds up to Adrien leaving with Lila. It would also explain why Marinette would potentially reveal herself to Adrien, if only to get him to stay. Because she knows that he's Chat, and maybe her being Marinette will somehow influence his decision. Or, it may show him that she's finally willing to trust him with everything.
It could also allude back to the song in the movie. Since the Miraculous movie was originally intended to act as a finale to Season 5, we can take things from early development and see if they end up fitting in the narrative. In this situation I'm going to quote "Ce mur qui nous separe" (English translation: The Wall Between Us), the French song that was made for the movie when it was intended to be the Season 5 finale.
It’s strong when I see him I want to scream on the rooftops our love that reaches out to us But I know that I can’t It’s not the right moment We have to be patient be patient
Here's the French translation in case the translation Genius gave me was wrong:
C’est fort quand je le vois Je veux crier sur tous les toits Notre amour qui nous tend les bras Mais je sais que je ne dois pas Ce n’est pas le moment Il faut être patients Être patients
This part of the song is from Marinette's perspective, and the fact that she's saying that she has to wait for the right moment to actually be in love with him probably means that she knows Adrien's identity. Because why would she "know" that she can't love him? Why is it not the right moment? Why do they have to be patient? Her being Ladybug and being unable to be in a relationship may explain why it's not the right moment, but the fact that she says "our" love points me in another direction. She knows she loves Adrien, and she knows that Chat, and therefore, Adrien, loves her. But she can't tell him her identity yet. However, her knowing his identity would make sense. I remember that before season 4 started airing, a lot of the fandom wondered if Chat was going to have to reveal his identity to her because she's the guardian. After all, that would make sense. Them making it a problem over the course of the season would mean that it would have to be handled in some way. I think that her finding out Chat's identity is probably the most logical course of action, as she can't be a good guardian until she has all the information at her disposal.
There are two specific lines which I find interesting in the finale synopsis. The part where it says, "Papillombre (Shadow Moth) conceives a diabolical plan around a super villain endowed with the power to push his victims to take all risks," is particularly interesting. This could mean a couple of things. Shadow Moth could be akumatizing Felix - after all, he stopped at nothing to try and replace Adrien in order to ruin his relationship with his friends. He kissed Ladybug when she told him no. He was snooping in Adrien's things. Clearly, there was nothing he wasn't willing to do in order to get the ring back. (This whole thing is never explained either after Felix - why is the ring so important?) Maybe that will make a comeback? Or, the "his" in the synopsis where it specifies that the villain has no limits, may be referring to Shadowmoth. In that situation, it could be Lila who is again akumatized. She has clearly no limits, as she's working for Shadow Moth willingly, and likely knows his identity. This is one likely scenario. Or Shadowmoth will akumatize Adrien. He may feel detached, and Gabriel will interpret it as being sad that he's being taken away from all of his friends. Adrien is known for being quite stubborn, and having Ladybug fight Adrien's akumatized state would be season finale material. However, if he is akumatized in the finale as something else, then the Chat Blanc akumatization in episode 22 is unlikely (they wouldn't do something like that twice in a row). Of course, his akumatized state would be different than Chat Blanc because people can be akumatized into multiple different villains and Hawkie doesn't know that Adrien=Chat Noir.
The second line that I find particularly interesting is this one:
And will Adrien take the risk to finally stand up to his father?
Now, why would Adrien stand up to his father? Maybe with literally everyone betraying him, he'll find no reason to stay. He needs a constant in his life, and telling his father that he needs him to be here for him may be a step that he makes. After all, Ladybug and him are having their biggest fight, his best friend Nino told him that he finds his hero persona absolutely abhorrent, and he doesn't feel like he has a place on the superhero team. He needs someone, and he's hoping that Gabriel can be that person.
That could be one scenario, or Adrien may find out about Hawkie's basement. Now, this, could raise a lot of questions for him. While I believe that Adrien would have the normal tendency to be like "father, what the hell." He may honestly believe that this is all he has left, and therefore, will assist his father. This takes me back to the season 2 opening card.
Tumblr media
Where is Chat Noir? With the villains.
Maybe Adrien will have his well deserved Dark!Chat Noir arc. Or maybe, he'll be a spy for the Quantic team. Ladybug and him will make up, and he'll tell her that he can spy on Hawkie for the team, and that's how they move into season 5 - with Adrien as a double agent. He will help his father in everything that he does, and therefore, get access to more information that he can share with the team. He can help establish a meeting for Hawk Moth to get caught, with evidence, by planting cameras, calling police, etc.
Honestly, I'm hoping for the latter subplot, as I don't want Chat Noir to go evil for everyone's sakes. I do think that the latter would also give him a cementable role that would logistically make sense and help establish him as an strong character, and more importantly, a valuable member of the team and Ladybug's true partner.
Or, they could go down the more simpler route, and choose Adrien to find out, be shocked, and then yell at his father for being who he is. Gabriel just assumes because Adrien is only just Adrien, he doesn't have to worry about him. He will threaten Adrien, and Adrien will stay silent in front of him, but tell the team on the side. Of course, this doesn't really mean double agent Adrien, but it still implies spy Adrien. It also still manages to make his character more relevant.
Regardless, there's a lot of different ways that line could go, and I'm excited to see where it moves on from there.
Implications on the Love Square
The love square seems entirely messed up this season. There is almost nothing going on in relation to it, especially in regards to Ladynoir, Ladrien, and Marichat. Adrienette has honestly the most action right now, especially with the reverse umbrella scene, them helping out Juleka together, etc. This leads me to think that while we'll get a lot of Ladynoir in the finale as they repair their relationship, Adrienette may be the strongest ship of the four when moving into season 5. Let me explain why.
Over the course of this entire season, Adrien has been getting closer to Marinette, and is honestly more warm with her than he has been with Ladybug. This can explain what everyone has been thinking - a reverse love square. Even if Ladybug and him make up, Chat may honestly want to go and see other people. This includes Mari. What Nino said about Ladybug finding him annoying may actually really affect him and his feelings and make him realize that he can find love elsewhere. It's also the fact that it was enunciated twice during Rocketear that Alya couldn't fall in love with someone that she didn't really know. That could lead Adrien to wonder if he really knows Ladybug, which will definitely complicate his feelings. The Kagami thing was never going to work out, so he just needs to find someone else who cares for him. He knows Marinette; he has called her similar to Ladybug - he may rebound from Ladybug to Marinette. Ladybug may realize that she messed up, and she has already shown that she is becoming more indifferent to dating Adrien, due to what happened with Luka. When she and Chat Noir fix their relationship, she may see him as the only person she doesn't have to lie to, and therefore thinks about pursuing a relationship with him. Therefore, a reverse love square would make the most sense in this situation.
If a ship were to start actually dating in season 5 - it may honestly depend on how the finale is. The two most likely ships imo are either Ladynoir or Adrienette. If Ladynoir makes up during the finale, then the barriers to them dating aren't really present, unless the Alya thing actually makes it complicated for them. Adrienette may get together, but Marinette is wary of dating because she's Ladybug. However, we all know she's weak in the knees for Adrien and will definitely say yes if he asked her out.
Therefore, I feel like this season is leaning more towards plot and character development, and while it may set some things up for season 5, it is important to pay attention at the little shifts in the square, because they are happening right in front of us.
Alya and Marinette
I wanted to be able to talk about this at some point in this theory, but since everything else is more Adrien centric, I added it here at the end. Okay, so we know that Alya is lying to Marinette about telling Nino things. We also know that Alya has bended the rules for Nino multiple times, both before and during Rocketear. This could go one of two ways: Alya telling Nino teaches Marinette that she needs to be able to trust Chat, and therefore helps her realize that she doesn't need to be so secretive and lie all the time. It could also lead to a plot where Alya basically messed up largely by telling Nino, and everything goes downhill from there. Ladybug shows Chat that they can't know each other's identities because of what happened with them. We also Nino is a bit of a blabbermouth - love his character, but he is. He told Adrien not only his identity, but also Alya's. He also told him that they know the other's identity. This is bad, and Adrien knowing definitely affects the plot later on. If Adrien ends up revealing himself to Ladybug, it is likely that she'll find out about Nino saying that, and having to revoke their kwamis. This could lead to a strained relationship with Alya. In fact, it is likely that at this point, Marinette will already have a strained relationship with Alya, as it could be revealed that Alya told Nino about Rena Furtive. This could lead to Ladybug being defensive and worried that she made mistakes, and literally just closing the Miraculous box because of it. Maybe Alya will go rogue? After all, it was mentioned in Rocketear (and I appreciate that they talked about this) how Alya was a reporter and that by extension means that her personality is one of a truthteller. Alya getting angry at Mari could definitely lead to a situation where she threatens to tell he everyone. I don't think Alya would or could do that, but anger leads to akumatization, and an akumatized Alya would not be good for anyone as her judgement would be impaired. Regardless, Rena Furtive may be a short time hero, and Mari and Alya may end the season in a fight. I don't see that being resolved in the finale, as no fight like that is mentioned in those episodes. There is also simply too much going on in the finale for it to make sense. It may be resolved later on, just like how other problems in season 3 started being solved in the beginning of season 4. Or, it could be fought out and resolved in episodes 23 and 24.
Therefore, I think that the Nino carelessly revealing his identity and Alya carelessly disregarding Ladybug's orders may lead to a plotpoint at some point where Alya and Ladybug fight. While I do think that it would be nice if Alya proved Ladybug wrong and showed that they were stronger for working together, I do not think it's likely. The show was deliberate in showing that Alya had a weakness for Nino, and has shown before that it has led to many situations where there were risks for everyone involved. Even Hawkmoth said that love and secrets don't go well together (is he talking from experience?), and I feel like that was so deliberate, but it could also be alluding to Chat and Ladybug. (Side note: it was so weird for Hawk Moth to say that, as he had no idea of the situation; regardless I do think this it's heavy foreshadowing.) Therefore, I do not think the situation that Alya has placed herself in is a situation which will have a peaceful ending.
Final Notes:
I personally cannot wait for the "Gabriel Agreste" episode. I think that the fact that we did not get it yet means that it has serious story implications. Personally, I believe it's going to explain allllll the backstory we need for the whole Bourgeois/Tsurugi/Agreste history and tell us why Emilie is the way she is right now. Of course, maybe it won't do everything, but the fact that it is named after Gabriel makes me wonder if it'll be his origins episode of sorts.
EDIT AFTER MEGA LEECH: IF GABRIEL AGRESTE REVEALS ADRIEN TO BE A SENTIMONSTER I WILL BE SO SO EXCITED BC ANGST BUT ALSO LIKE??? WHAT ABOUT THE PLOT? WHAT ABOUT THE NINE YEAR OLDS?
Chat snapping is honestly something that I cannot wait for. All of his anger has been building up over the entire season thus far, and the implications of his feelings are definitely serious for the show's plot.
I wonder if Mayura will be making a comeback at some point. While this is less relevant, Nathalie's health seems to be making her bedridden for a long time. Maybe she'll return to a similar state to Emilie? I saw theories that stated that if Hawkie gets his wish, Nathalie's life may be sacrificed for Emilie's, and idk, I think it's not likely that it'll happen, but it would be cool if it did. The ultimate payback for his actions being the loss of Nathalie.
Look at the end card of Rocketear:
Tumblr media
He's looking at the moon, which was shown in New York to be something he does when he's sad. Also possible reference to him destroying the moon in Chat Blanc.
Kitty do be on a roof all alone without his lady :(

Dedicated to @panthergoddessbast ❤. House Rules Erik was requested. SMUT. Dom!Erik. Sub!Reader. SUPRISEEEEEE!!!!
------------------------------------------------------
Part Four: Still Employed
Work today had been an interesting endeavor between the unique customers, item recommendations you made to said customers, and the flashbacks you kept having to the previous night. Everytime you thought of what the dick did, you felt it as if it were happening right then on the spot. You felt like you were still getting fucked as you were standing to ring up customers and as you were assisting them on the floor. Your knees crossed as you attempted to keep your mind focused and your body calm. Still, you caught yourself daydreaming of the dick. It was magical compared to what you'd been dealing with. You needed it again and as soon as possible.
Erik still hasn't called you back after you called and texted him this morning, a thank you for returning your car. Part of you feels some kind of way, but a more reasonable side of you understands being busy and not responding. Still, you know he'd better say something eventually because you know exactly what you want and he's going to give it to you one way or another because you had a deal. Just because the sex was amazing doesn't mean you don't want your stuff.
Your attention is drawn to the door as he walks through. You finish up your statement as you tell a thirty-something about the next season of shoes that's supposed to release. "Yeah, you should come back. I've seen a few of them and if you like this shoe, you need to see those. It's crucial! Excuse me," you nod making your way to Erik who stands relaxed with his forearm on the counter. He drums on it with his fingers as you walk around behind the register.
"Miss me yet," he deadpans, eyes set on yours. "I missed that dick," you smile watching his eyes sparkle. God, he was beautiful. "You know what you want yet," he leans in closer with both forearms on the counter to ask, his deep brown eyes still holding yours. You nod. "I can't hear you," his low voice rumbles and you drop your gaze to his full and plump lips.
"Your eyes drooping. Long night?" He smirks. "And a long day," you add. He looks good though. He looks bright-eyed and bushy tailed despite running the streets all night. "So what you want? Shoes? A purse? Clothes?" His eyes follow yours as you sway on your feet. You love this part. "All of the above," you smile, "And some more of that dick. I'm going to need that as soon as possible." His eyes twinkle and your thighs press together. You can feel his dick still and you need it. "You a greedy lil bitch ain't you?" "Mhm," you swallow. "Mhm what? What are you?" His head tilts waiting for your reply as he lifts your chin with his rough index finger. "I'm a greedy lil bitch," you whisper for his ears only. "And who am I," he squints dramatically as though he's confused. One thing he doesn't need to do is play with you like this. You will drag him to the back room so fast and leave security to do their job alone, fuck the customers. "Daddy," you whisper. "Good girl, Jae. You get one thing. Choose."
You pull your face away from his hand to look at him. "That wasn't the deal though. You said anything and anything doesn't denote a limit. Therefore, the limit does not exist," you smile, a smug bobble in your head. "The limit does n--That's cute," he grins before his face snaps back to a neutral expression. "I'm choosing for you. Go pick your shoes and bring em back. You got two minutes so I suggest you move that ass."
You already know which ones you want him to buy you, you've thought about it enough. You scoot to grab your size in the Multiplaticool heels in black kidskin. It has four separate slender straps adorned with gunmetal cube studs starting from the arch. They're split in two and rejoined up the front with rope laces. You plan to wear these sexy babies with the tight-fitted black dress you already purchased online. You also grab the multicolored pair too while you're at it. You have to try him, he might say yes and buy them.
Scooting back to the register, you blow a breath and watch him swipe his credit card. $1,295 plus tax.. only the one pair, the black ones.
"Aw, the greedy lil bitch wanted both pairs," he teases, humored by your irritated pout. You feel him watch you as you store the shoebox behind the counter. "I'll be happier when I get my matching purse and dress," you frown. "And that dick. Like I said, I need that too and very soon." He smiled at that. "You like this dick, Jae?" Your pussy jumped with another flashback. "Hm?" He leans closer and you have a customer waiting behind him for you to ring her up. He looks back at her and steps aside, still watching you closely as you smile at the woman and bag her boxes, sending her on her way. She avoided your eyes the whole time and you flushed knowing she heard the tail-end of your convo. Erik returns to his original position in front of you. "You want it? Tell me how bad," he purrs causing your walls to clench. "Really bad, daddy. I want that dick so bad. We can go to the back right now and I'll ride you like no other bitch has ever ridden you, I swear."
"That won't be necessary," he smiles. "I want my dick sucked right here. You let me nut in that pretty mouth and I'll buy you that purse."
You look around at your customers who are in their own little worlds. His words have you spinning and desperate to get on your knees. "What's it gonna be," he asks already knowing what you'll decide. You pretend to look for something behind your counter and drop to the floor. Catching the hint, he chuckles moving behind the counter and shuffling the items around on top. "Guess I'm you today," he grins as you rush his zipper down and then his pants. You pull his semi-hard dick through the designed hole of his Armani black briefs and drag your slick tongue from the base around the material to the fleshy tip of his wide penis, looking up to watch him looking out over the floor. He waves and a second later you hear a woman's voice as he congratulates her on her purchase as though he actually works in this store. The box lands on the counter and he's repeating the steps he watched you take to ring her up, his hand coming down subtly to push your head onto his dick, it growing in your mouth and lengthening down into your throat. "Enjoy," he smiles nodding at the retreating woman as he moves his fingers into your long black and blonde twists, yanking and pushing your head in the motion he wants you to follow. "Throat that dick, bitch.. just like that... like that," he whispers still looking casually out at the floor. You do just that and he thrusts into your mouth, his movements a bit more obvious now. "I got you," he says reaching out to grab another box of shoes from someone's hand. His hips still and you grab his legs to suck his dick sloppily with no hands, enjoying it with your eyes closed as he completes another transaction. He's doing your work and you're sucking his dick in ecstasy at the same time. It's an arrangement you'd love to get used to. If you weren't worried about getting reported and fired, you would do it as often as you could get away with. You moan and he looks down with an intrigued grin. Your eyelids flutter open and you see the customer staring down into your eyes awkwardly. She clears her throat with a quiet smirk as you detach your lips bubbling with spit from Erik's shaft, spit still dangling in a line from it to your wet chin. Your heart thuds hard in your chest and Erik's mischievous smile looks on pleased. "Have a good day ma'am," he says as she walks away with a smug and humored expression. Your heart is still pounding. You really didn't expect to really get caught. "I aint stay stop," he chuckles bringing your head back to his raging erection. "You want that purse, you better show Daddy how bad. You a greedy lil bitch.. remember?"
"Yes, daddy," you moan more quietly this time, sucking his dick hungrily into your mouth again as he rubs your hair. "Good girl," he whispers.
"I got you. Right here," he calls to another customer. You hear them step up and firmly determine to keep your moans to yourself this time.

Liar Liar V1: Chapter 12
A Mutual Agreement
1. Both parties are sworn to secrecy regarding the contents of this contract even beyond its termination. (I can't tell anybody? Not even my sister?) (Not a single soul. ...Maybe close family members are fine. Only if they promise to keep it to themselves and you know they will.) (Add in close friends.) (...Fine, but only after it ends. You get it? After. It. Ends.)
2. Interaction irrelevant to the discussion of the contract clauses and maintenance is unnecessary. (Is it discouraged, though?)
3. The course and details of the relationship are to be indisputably decided by Kise Ryouta and Sugiyama Saeri is to comply unquestioningly. (This is very important.) (But you can't change what I've already said about our 'meeting'...) (I can't? Or can I?) (Well...) (...I still cannot believe that you could come up with such a ridiculous story.)
4. Only the bare minimum is to be done for maintaining the mask of the relationship and it should not be to the inconvenience of either party. (Especially Kise Ryouta.)
*CANCELLED*5. Sugiyama Saeri is to obey every whim and fancy of Kise Ryouta.*CANCELLED* (What?! No way. That's not happening.) (You said that you'll 'do everything and anything [I] ask you to'!) (It was just a figure of speech!) (I can leave now, you know?)
5. Sugiyama Saeri is to carry out the whims and fancies of Kise Ryouta to the best of her ability. (Only 'to the best of her ability'...?) (Let's be realistic.) (Fine. This is also very important, by the way.) (Quit it.)
*CANCELLED*6. Kise Ryouta is allowed the liberty of ignoring Sugiyama Saeri, but not vice versa.*CANCELLED* (This is redundant. And it's not like I'm the irritating kind of person.) (Well, I don't know you.)
6. The date of this contract's termination is to be decided by Kise Ryouta. 6a. But it can only take place at least *CANCELLED*a year *CANCELLED* 6 months*CANCELLED* 8 months after the start of the contract. (So that it justifies the 'serious' aspect of our relationship.) (Our FAKE relationship. And a year is too long!) (And a half is too short!)
7. Both parties have no further reason to communicate after the termination of this contract. (So we can go back to being strangers.)
Signed, Kise Ryouta Sugiyama Saeri
(Just wondering, what will happen if a clause is broken?) (...)
(...Actually, why do we even need a contract?)

Saeri could not stop sneaking glances.
A stunning beauty. The epitome of sophistication. Class and style personified. Mature sweetness in full bloom. Jaw-dropper, head turner; —her own reflection, off the shiny acrylic glass of a bus stop billboard.
...So, she may have been exaggerating a bit.
Noticing yet another passer-by's appreciative stare in the background from the makeshift-mirror, she pursed her lips to cage the escaping grin she has been bearing since her exit from the bespectacled stylist's apartment, wanting to fake casual indifference to her new appearance even though her heart squealed otherwise. Clothes do maketh the man, she mused while running lined eyes up and down her chiffon dress and black pumps. Having turned down offers from modelling scouts on the streets before, the girl knew she was much prettier than the average of her peers but it never occurred to her that she was capable of such loveliness. It excited her. It made her elated, jubilant. She was betrayed when her thoughts leaked a smile, which froze uncomfortably when she caught the blonde model's eyes in their reflected images.
"Are you done crushing on yourself?" Every fantasy she owned about strutting down a catwalk crashed and burned when he spoke. "Well, I've always been this good-looking my whole life, so I won't understand the kind of happiness you get when you can look like a star for the first time, but aren't you a little too happy?"
"...why can't you let me be great?"
Saeri spun away from the billboard and fixed it stonily on the road, unable to live her previous enthusiasm. She drew her mobile up from her bag to ascertain the time, and seeing that it was closing in to six, permitted a new kind of thrill to floor her over. Five more minutes to getting into her family's car and probably thirty more to exit it, and thereafter, another five to step up to Akashi in her current regalia, to seal their marriage deal when he becomes smitten with her at first glance. Just forty more minutes to securing her dream, and the thought rekindled her smile and lit her face up once more.
Lured by movements from the corner of his eyes, Kise turned right again to make another comment. However, upon witnessing how miserably she failed in containing her glee—which bubbled out between closed and open-lipped smiles as she fiddled with her phone—he locked his jaw and sighed instead, deciding to let her be while clasping his hands behind his head. Though he was honestly surprised by how comely she looked when she first stepped out of Sa-chan's room all dolled up, he didn't feel the overwhelming need to gawk and marvel as he was already accustomed to beautiful females from his part-time profession and home (neither did he have the time to anyway considering how flustered she became after seeing the clock). But now as he watched her burst into another round of bitten-down grins, he realised he couldn't look away.
Her delight was still as effervescent as ever, but unlike before, it wasn't a narcissistic kind of thrill. It was more of a hopeful joy; something purer and softer on her features, something that brought the best out of her smile, and most of all, something that hooked him to her. Now having both the time and inclination, he began noticing how the chocolate tendrils that spilled close to her skin shone with its fairness, began studying the way her lips curved into lotus-dusted cheeks to lift them up, began melding into the rhythm of her falling lashes and deeper into the crescents they sheltered.
Has she always been this—
...
Unable to ignore the mounting pressure any longer, Saeri locked her phone and whipped to her left. "What?"
Her scissor-like query cut the line and dropped him from his daze, and golden orbs instinctively repelled to the pavement. "N-Nothing."
"What?"
"It's just—" His fingers broke out of their weave so that a hand could drop to his side while the other rubbed the flush on his neck. "Well..."
Honey met cinnamon.
"You look very pretty."
...
The pure shock reflected in her dilating pupils made him miss a beat. Should I have said that...?
...
It was a compliment she'd heard so many times before, and yet when he said it, it felt like the first.
Saeri could do nothing but blink owlishly until a creeping heat across her nose stung her senses into revival and swiveled her head frontwards again. The beating of her heart grew louder and louder as she rummaged the list of responses she should give, which grew more and more scrambled as well. She didn't know why, but scolding him came first, and what followed were also aggressive in nature. A 'duh' or an 'I know' were her habitual replies to flattery, but somehow those options felt so unnatural in that moment, as did everything else.
And it wasn't flattery this time. Not with him.
"...Thanks..." In the end, she did none of them. "For everything else today too..."
Kise returned his attention to her (having allowed it to stray to passing cars when she remained silent and hidden for too long) and yellow brows rose at how red she was. He'd expected a vain smirk instead of this contented simper; expected some haughty affirmation to his praise or even a fierce, reproachful denial, not this bashful, mumbling, bag-clenching girl who couldn't even meet his gaze. Neither did he expect the push to compliment her all over again, but instead: "Thank Sa-chan. She really is a miracle-worker!"
"Hey, what are you implying?!" Her knee-jerk retort flew out before she was even aware that it did. Nonetheless, it settled her into her previous state of comfort and she could breathe normally again. "Send me her address," she said, "I'll mail her a box of Osakan treats as gratitude."
It took a second for the basketballer to welcome the return of the easy, grounded atmosphere they were both used to. Yellow hair tousled as hands tangled behind his head again. "Hmm... She likes you," his eyes sought the sky for recollections of his stylist's words, "so I think she'll be happy enough to just see you again."
A sigh. "You make things sound so simple..."
"Well, you're my girlfriend, so it should be. Right?"
"Idiot. We aren't really dating, you know?"
"Obviously!"
Following the tugs on their lips, both turned—one to the left, one to the right—and like mirrors, they found their own grins on the other.
A furious volley of car-horns then brutally mauled the serendipity between them, yanking every pair of eyes on the sidewalk towards a decelerating silver Mazda. Its backseat window fell just in time to show Hiroki snatching his hand from his father's steering wheel, and the university student almost slammed himself into the car-couch in his own race to visually incinerate the blonde flower vase who had the nerve to stand next to his precious sister, especially in that stupid, plain hoodie and those old, wrinkled jeans when she was adorned so beautifully and sophisticatedly.
A growl straight from his guts. "Saeri, get in."
Chest still turned inside-out from the shock, Saeri stooped down to interrogate her brother about the commotion but her mother beat her to it, although she sounded more like background chatter than the main dialogue, especially with the monopoly of her attention by the intense glare from black eyes.
("Hiroki! What is the matter with you?! All of a sudden... You could have shocked your father into an accident!")
"Get. In. Now."
("Honestly, you're already twenty and you still want to be scolded! You better behave yourself at Akashi-san's party. And— Oh, Sae! Who is that?")
The two high-school students exchanged looks and discomfort, with the girl breaking the silence first. "Well, thank you for today. Again..." And tentatively, "we'll see each other again? ...Again..."
Ah, she found herself pondering over her immensely redundant repetitions, that blank, floating feeling came back... A fleeting montage of what transpired between them and the Kaijo players surfaced, but she subdued it before it made any troublesome waves.
There was a dollop of regret when she heard nothing from him, but it morphed into irritation and relief when she realised that it was her brother who muzzled him and not unsavoury feelings. The vehicle's door was already expecting her before she could even raise her hand in farewell, and her lips curled for the blonde boy once more as it slammed shut. Bunta and Nobuko twisted their backs from the front to relieve their curiosity. "Sae-chan, who is that? Is that your boyfriend?"
At their eager, expectant faces (though her mother leaned towards a questioning rivet), the brunette opened her mouth to reply, but a terse, masculine voice seared out instead.
"No. He is not." The suit that Hiroki wore creased along the torso as he embedded his arms across it. "Let's go."
As he intended, the entire exchange was audible to the tall teenager standing outside who dared not move under the dark-haired and dark-tempered man's scrutiny. The car finally started to glide away, and even when it was a small fleck down the road, Kise still felt like Atlas under the World. It took the vehicle's complete disappearance and a minute more for him to shake off his fear of that man to accommodate memories of the day. When that happened, his steps bounced off the pavement in the manner they did after a good basketball match, and he didn't know exactly why they did either.
-
Silence bowed to the click of her heels and her entrance challenged the brightest lights of the abode, be they chandeliers or even the moon. Wherever her dress fluttered, eyes and whispers followed. 'Is that the Sugiyamas' second child?', 'Can you believe she's only sixteen?', 'What a perfect set of looks, smarts and conduct!', 'We must marry her in!', 'She's way out of your league. Forget it!' A mansion of big-leaguers and the crème de la crème, and just by being at the centre of their interest, she topped them all. There were only so many smiles she could throw, so many laughs she could sprinkle, so many glasses of champagne she could sip, so how was she expected to hold the throngs of conversations that flowed towards her from all around? It was a problem that—
Saeri wished she had. She hoped. She sighed.
...
Tightening her grip on the slender glass of wine she simply could not swallow, the brunette tested the balance of the highboy table she was leaning on as she inched forwards in her ninth attempt to call her brother.
"Nii-chan..."
Tenth.
"Nii-chan...!"
The same, old view of his back. Maybe she should have realised that whisper-shouts just don't work in this chatter-brimmed environment, but how else was she going to get him back to her side without alerting everybody around of her crippling need for company?
"Hiroki!"
Yes, he's turning back and— Saeri gasped, affronted. Even her own brother was ignoring her! Pricked by the thought of having stayed at the same spot for far too long, she conceded to the urge to wander around Akashi Manor, a solitary activity that would not look as sad. Dumping one last betrayed glare, she wordlessly left him to entertain (read: flirt with) to his heart's content all the rich, esteemed women crowding around who were far too old for him in the first place. Trust Hiroki to steal her limelight; ever since the Sugiyama family's first steps into the manor's foyer, all attention has been focused on their first-born. Sure, many of her parents' associates and friends have praised their daughter, but every single time after the second line of remarking on how pretty she'd grown, they would deviate to listing and fawning over every attribute the tall, raven-haired stud possessed. And they never went back to her. Bunta and Nobuko would fuel them by inserting new information, and Saeri would just stand by and smile and nod.
She was genuinely proud of her sibling for the most part, but the nagging irrelevance she endured got too heavy and the girl was condemned to just hope and wait for the time she could humbly brag about her own achievements as well. Irritation first seeped in when Akashi's father graced their family with his presence, and Saeri could not believe that her brother would just snatch her future in-law's recognition so selfishly; the only line directed to her was that his son should be somewhere in the house and nothing else, not even a compliment. (Actually, all Hiroki did was greet Mr Akashi as he was supposed to, and the latter's steely praises just snowballed automatically from there.) Insecurity and loneliness then entered when Bunta and Nobuko detached themselves to make their rounds with the former's boss, felt when Hiroki started to mingle with the other adults, and fully cemented when Saeri realised that there was nobody else she knew or was young enough for her to properly socialise with.
And the worst part: it had already been more than half-an-hour in and there was still no sight of vibrant red hair and heterochromatic eyes.
Granted, the Akashi Manor was a huge labyrinth with far too many rooms for two people barely living in it (then again, considering the number of maids and workers housed there...), and nearly every square-metre it encompassed was covered by leather shoes and lethal stilettos, so the chances of bumping into a particular individual were made very slim. And yet, on the other hand, they were soul-mates, kindred spirits holding on to the same red thread. It was Heaven's will for Saeri to adopt his surname, so shouldn't Akashi Seijuro be the first person in his residence to witness her current magnificence?
And speaking of 'residence' and 'magnificence', her mind stewed while her eyes attempted to consolidate her surroundings, having ventured into another chamber (the drawing room, she presumed). Acres of marble, Persian rugs, exquisite woodwork, silverware, art pieces, antique china, the sheer size of the abode—everything the mansion had defined opulence. No, the title Akashi defined opulence. As Saeri marvelled over the many (and counting) trophies and awards collected by the family, she caught her reflection in the extensive cabinet (which practically bordered the room) that boasted them and her resolve to produce an heir that will contribute to the collection intensified a thousand-fold. This was the house she wanted to live in, this was the life she existed for, this was everything perfect to her. She was tailored for such prosperity, such affluence, such luxury. She knew it, and she definitely will not permit it to remain as a dream or a wish. It was going to be her reality.
And there—as her eyes drifted away from the gold-handled case to the adjacent chamber—was the man she was going to marry.
Saeri now knew where the guests of her age-group were congregating at. Crowned in red and mantled in blue, Akashi Seijuro was knighting the adoring daughters and admiring sons of his father's associates with his attention, flawlessly holding multiple exchanges at once. During a rare break he got in between their questions, his ruby and golden gaze trailed up and landed on her.
She was locked.
Every other body faded into a blur; Akashi was the only person who made her vision clear. Her chest was thudding in slow-motion and more torturously than usual; he was magnetizing her more strongly than ever, and she didn't know if it was because of his navy bespoke suit or that charity smirk-smile he gave or anything else. All she knew was that she wanted to talk to him, and she deserved to more than all of the other girls—not because of pride. This feeling stilling her was too strong for that.
The sole of her shoes began to lift.
"I'm sorry, but I see you hanging around by yourself, and I personally find it a sin to let such a pretty girl wander about alone. Gosh, what are the others thinking?"
Taupe eyes blinked at hazel, at coffee-coloured hair, at the string of English words she slowed to comprehend. At the tall, Caucasian man who suddenly appeared before her.
"My name is Gian," he smiled winsomely, angling a hand at her, "are you an associate's daughter, or are you directly related to Mr Akashi?"
Sifting the meaning of his words and overcoming the surprise, Saeri threw a shaky grasp and an even shakier reply. "M-my name is Sugi—I mean, Saeri Sugiyama. I am Mr Akashi's employee's daughter." She was certain that it was grammatically correct, but she wasn't as confident in her pronunciation, especially to a native speaker. Her mind was stretched; it would be rude and unpleasant to immediately excuse herself after a stranger's introduction (which she would've been flattered to welcome under different circumstances), but she was already so determined to stride towards Akashi and talk to him. He had already resumed his conversations, and her line of sight was passed to the handsome foreigner.
"Oh, Sugiyama? You're Hiroki's sister, then!"
"Yes. You know my brother?"
"Yeah, I just met him! I'll be returning to Japan next spring to attend his college for an exchange programme. Great guy, your brother is."
"He is," she nodded, "I'm really sorry..." Gian was charismatic with his bubbly personality and cheerful grins, but the girl wanted to pull herself out and cross over to the other room and...and what? She blinked at blank space. Was she going to just snatch him from the group and start their own chat? What did she even prepare to discuss? Was she going to shoehorn herself in to their conference? Will she even latch on to the topic? Or was she going to stand by awkwardly and pathetically pray for somebody to include her, as it had been for the duration of the party so far?
Saeri felt her heart sink, and Akashi Seijuro had not even raised a word nor a finger to her.
The Caucasian cocked his head apologetically. "You're really sorry...?"
"I'm really sorry," she lugged the ends of her lips up, "if my English is difficult to understand."
Their introductions continued, and amidst the foreigner's animated accounts of his experiences in Japan, brown eyes lingered to the side to find the departure of a redhead's back, a kingdom come she feared to accept.
From: Kise Ryouta To: Sugiyama Saeri
(Today, 8:59pm)
So...how many times have you been hit on?
.
From: Sugiyama Saeri To: Kise Ryouta
(Today, 9:00pm)
If by 'hit on' you mean being talked to, then twice. The first by a foreigner who's 'hitting on' everyone he sees, and the other by a 70-year-old grandma (not Akashi-kun's) because I was the only one left sitting at our table. She just left with her bodyguard-helpers, by the way. She got tired and needed to rest. I hope I wasn't the cause...
.
Another sigh escaped Saeri's as she looked at her plate of crustacean shells and half-filled glass of (probably luxury) mineral water, and then at the surrounding vacantness. She had been getting enthusiastic in her conversation with Gian(who, contradicting her initial belief, did not approach her with the intention to flirt; he was just an exceptionally friendly character) but they were interrupted when the dinner buffet commenced and everyone was ushered to the field-sized garden where round tables were set up. The girl then misconceived that she was finally saved from future lonesomeness when her family returned, but after the food and Mr Akashi's speech—which amazed her as he spoke words of gratitude and yet every guest still felt as though they owed him—Bunta, Nobuko and Hiroki floated away to mingle even more, as did most of the party's attendees. Fortunately, Kise's text flew in immediately after the departure of the sweet geriatric (or dowager; she was the mother of a CEO) who shared her table, and the brunette had something to relieve the isolation she felt.
Saeri did not envision the party to turn out like this at all. She saw herself happily conversing with the other teens who had tagged along with their families as she did, not resorting to online correspondence on her phone and repetitively checking her feed on social-media. She saw her parents describing her academic excellence to colleagues and her brother possessively guarding her from hopeful suitors throughout the function (in accordance to his tirade during the car-ride), not simultaneously leaving her behind in a mansion full of strangers. She saw herself having fun, not suffering boredom. Were her expectations just too romanticised? Was her head too high in the clouds?
She heard the crushing of grass under soled feet and assuming that the Sugiyamas were finally reminded of their fourth member's existence, turned around to snap out of childish resentment, "just leave me alone like how you've been doing, okay?"
...
Heterochromatic eyes blinked. "If that is what you wish..."
"Oh my God," the girl could have cried when he started to turn, "I'm so sorry, Akashi-kun! I didn't mean that! I thought you were my family or something!"
"I know," a teasing smile then faced her.
Though imagining suicide at how disrespectful and unfilial she sounded, Saeri relished her settling nerves when the redhead drew the seat beside her and lowered himself onto it.
"I apologise for taking this long to greet you," he started, "but there were many guests and you were quite elusive."
It sounded more of an explanation and accusation rather than an apology, but she was too giddy to care. "I-It's fine, I understand that you were very occupied."
"And so were you. Gian talks to everyone, but he only stretches his conversations with beautiful women. He got you engaged for a considerably long time."
There were two things that disintegrated all coherent thought she possessed. Did he just call me beautiful? Did he just reveal that he observed me? She wanted to pinch herself to ascertain that she wasn't in a dream, but she couldn't even move to change the dumbfounded stare she knew she had on her face. Fortunately, the arrival of a third presence jolted her into motion once again.
"Seijuro-san," it was a girl identified as one of those who was previously sticking to him. She flashed a distasteful once-over to Saeri before donning the honeyed smile she wore for Akashi. "Mayoka-chan really wants to see your horses. I tried explaining to her that it will be inconvenient for you, but how can I refuse my precious younger sister's pout? I'm so sorry, but can you bring us to the stable?"
Saeri had better morals than to return the look she gave, but beneath the friendly and welcoming demeanour she portrayed to the newcomer was a storm of curses, mental shooing and a reluctant acknowledgement of the opponent's move. Not bad, she admitted, not only giving him the impression that you're a good and caring sibling, you're also luring him away to a place that's probably quiet and secluded so that it's just going to be the two of you and a little twerp you can easily ignore. What a tactic! She spared a displeased glance at the girl, who reminded her a lot of Shijima (and it wasn't just biasedness talking). Akashi-kun, you better say no to this home-wrecker!
And that, he did.
"My horses are sleeping at this hour," he said, coolly diplomatic, "and I would hate for their rest to be interrupted as it will affect their performance on the track."
The girl was prepared for such an answer, but her plan of insistence simply could not be put into action, especially with that piercing gaze of his that clearly warned her not to test him. "Oh. Is that so?" She filled, "I guess I'll have to explain that to Mayoka-chan, then." Having lost all sense of purpose in interrupting their talk, she finally left, and Saeri could not help but smirk triumphantly when she shot her a glower of jealousy. Now that she's out of the way...
"Wait..." The delayed realisation finally kicked in, and brown eyes blew up as quickly as the volume of her voice. "You have horses?!"
"Yes, I go horse-riding as a hobby."
He replied so matter-of-factly that she felt obligated to tone herself down as well. "It suits you, Akashi-kun," she found herself saying, "I guess that being able to steer and control an animal as majestic and free-willed as the horse will give one a great deal of satisfaction."
"My sentiments exactly," he nodded, tints of approval in his silk-sheathed knife-smile. The brunette was still stomaching that wondrous fact, and she tried hard to shove her excitement away. You're not a kid, don't ask to see his horses. You're not a kid, don't ask to see his horses. Deciding that they should depart from this topic lest she blurt her desire, her brain scrambled to find an alternative topic.
Considering that it was the only apparent thing common between them, Awards Day came up and she didn't know if it was a good idea or not. Thankfully, he was receptive to it and they entered a discussion without traces of disdain in his expression. It wasn't until their addressing of the Street Dance Club's routine that the dancer felt the regret.
"You have an impressive sequence five minutes into the dance," the redhead agreed, but she knew to expect a less amiable continuation. "Unfortunately, from the recent rehearsals, it is clear that the assigned dancer is unable to execute it well enough. Change her for someone more competent."
"No, we cannot do that!" Her response shot out more heatedly than she'd like, but even his narrowing eyes failed to impede her. "Yuzu's been really looking forward to her solo, and she's been working harder than anyone for it. I cannot even suggest to Chiaki that we should change her. It's something important."
"You are willing to sabotage your club's success for one mere member?"
"We won't be sabotaging anything," she pleaded, now completely seeing him as a Council President and not her crush, an occurrence that has been happening more and more frequently. "Please, give her more time. She'll perfect herself."
Akashi studied the earnest desperation in her eyes, and though disapproving, he relented the sigh he gives during council meetings. "Fine, but she has one week. If she botches even by next Wednesday, you are to find an alternative dancer."
"One week?! That's impossible!"
"It is final."
Saeri bit her tongue to prevent any escalations of the frigid atmosphere between them. She took a minute to calm herself and retrieve the usual flutters of her heart whenever she was near him, and then wracked her mind for something else they could talk about while grabbing the glass on the table for something to fill her twisting hands.
"So...you have horses?"
She wanted to dump her drink on her own head.
Amusement dawned on his face. "Are you still marvelling over that fact?"
"No! ...Yes..." She lied in reflex, but then backtracked as she looked away. Unable to resist, she let out: "can I see them?"
"They are sleeping," she heard him repeat, and wanted nothing more than to curl up and waste away, "perhaps I'll invite you to the stable in my residence in Kyoto to see them, should the appropriate day arise."
It took awhile to sink in, and when it did...
"What?!"
Water flowed down her knees and calves like a spring when her grasp loosened in her surprise, which was so numbing that she did not even realise her folly until the redhead bent down to gently tap her leg twice with a napkin before pressing it into her palms.
"I-I'm so sorry," she groaned, frantically drying herself, "I'm just so clumsy around you."
Again, she only knew of her mistake when he addressed it. "I doubt that Ryouta can appreciate what you just said to me, Saeri."
Helpless to his drawl, she looked up, and when she did, found a glint in his eyes that she could not leave alone.
"But then again, he probably can. Since the two of you are not actually dating."
