sometimes when i say i “ship” something i mean im invested in these characters relationship and how their personalities will compliment/clash to make each other better/worse and im obsessed with the way their storylines intertwine with each other. and other times when i say i “ship” something i mean i find the idea of these characters dating hilarious and i dont care about their dynamic beyond a few memes. like an actual ship vs a crackship.

but sometimes i see a ship and think “oh thats funny” but then i find out people actually ship it and have written 80k words of meta on why the ship is Good, Actually. but when i read it i am overwhelmed by the They Would Not Fucking Say That-ness of it all. and in recognizing how They Would Not Fucking Say That i am forced to think about the ship and its dynamic in detail to decide what They Would Fucking Say. and by the end i can’t even crackship it anymore. because once you think about it too hard the ship stops being funny it just starts being bad

Because of being such slow and clumsy typer Hunter would write text drawfts before hand(in notepad so he d copy and paste), speculating how the conversation would go.

Also beside sending flapjack pics he d for sure infodump her about plants (after a while) (she d infodump back + send pics of clover and her plants)

He initially typed Like That (h.EELlo) because he was rushing himself to get the texts out. He worried that if he took too long, she'd lose interest in the conversation. But eventually he gets more accustomed with the keypad and only makes typos as often as the average teen. And when he's Not talking with Willow, he likes scrolling through their chat log. Makes him smile. However he cringes an awful lot because he used to be really REALLY bad at typing.

Once he's realized that she's not gonna ghost him if he doesn't answer her immediately he's comfortable enough to take some time to draft what he's gonna say. He even weighs the pros and cons of specific terminology. He's like "should I use this word? It's a big word. Shows her I'm smart and I know big words. Or maybe it'll come across as pretentious. Should I use the word pretentious? It's also a big word and it shows I'm smart but--"

But once they get in The Zone (i.e. a common interest in the usage of plants in magic.) he stops worrying about structuring his texts so much cuz he just gets carried away with all the yammering. She's also yammering. He likes that. Makes him feel less annoying. And he likes to read what she has to say. She's really smart.

(I admire people who have standards and actual wishlists for what they want for Hunter and Willow's relationship in season 3 but listen to me. Listen very carefully. I am starved for them to just have a single goddamn interaction. Hunter called Willow by her name in King's Tide and it was barely audible and it sustained me for weeks. I will take whatever the fuck this show chooses to give me. They could go all the fuck out with fireworks. They could never acknowledge Hunter's crush ever again. Just so long as they INTERACTION. I am starving, for the love of God.)

WHY HUNTLOW IS A FORCED AND UNREALISTIC  SHIP.

1. First impressions:

Raeda has the most amicable meeting. About Lumity, Amity shook Luz's collar and almost got Principal Bump dissect her. It stems from misunderstanding, because Amity doesn't know Luz is human but a strange non-Abomination that Willow used to cheat. About Huntlow, Willow seems to be violent for no reasons at all. Hunter disguises as a Hexside student so to Willow, he's just a student that she doesn't know. He's not a threat at all. Yet she summons the vines to wrap him tightly and drags him down the ground so hard that the asphalt gets damaged. Treating strangers like this is not fine and out of character for Willow.

Also, when Hunter is about to leave again, Willow drags him down the ground and takes him to the field without asking his permission. This crosses boundaries a lot. In comparison, even though Amity sees Hunter as an enemy in Eclipse Lake, she just simply uses Abomination magic to capture him, not dragging him down violently like Willow.

2. Understanding:

Raine and Eda have a genuine common interest in music, magic (Eda is interested in wild magic and Raine supports her). Luz and Amity are both interested in Azura, the idea of being not enough for anyone, the idea of being accepted and loved for who they really are. Amity is also interested in Luz's glyph magic and she learns to draw it many times. 

About Huntlow, I don't see any common between them besides flyer derby. The whole “Half a Witch” is forced. Half a witch means a witch who is not powerful enough. Willow is a powerful Plant witch, her fathers just didn't realize her real magic talent and put her into Abomination track, which isn't her forte. If you're only good at Maths, but not Chemistry, does it make you unintelligent overall? Of course not. 

About Hunter, first off, he is not even a witch. He's a Grimwalker with no bile sack, his pointed ears were adjusted to look like witches’. Also, he's skillful at using magic staffs so no one sees him as powerless. He's the elite Golden Guard, one of the most powerful figures under Belos. No one dares to call him half a witch, even if they do think he's weak. And how he quickly recognizes the illusion of Willow in S2ep18 is unrealistic. How come Gus, Willow's long-term friend can't figure out before Hunter? The fact that Willow seems to be scared of Hunter is understandable. Last time, he literally locked her and her friends up, then kidnapped them, he also worked for Belos. Who knows if he's gonna do the same?

Hunter and Willow know little about each other. It's one sided. Hunter knows Willow is a strong and independent person, a caring and selfless girl. But Willow knows too little about Hunter compared with Luz, Gus and Amity. They never have a serious talk about Hunter's trauma caused by Belos, only a short scene of Willow cutting his hair. In Thanks to Them, Hunter has a deeper conversation with Luz and Gus than with Willow. With Willow, he just blushes even though nothing happens. Gus and Hunter's bond makes more sense than Huntlow to be honest. They both like Flyer Derby, they both like Cosmic Frontier, Gus knew about Hunter's being Grimwalker and his conflict with Belos, Hunter comforted Gus when he felt sad in Labyrinth Runner and when he missed his Dad. Hunter's screentime with Gus is even more than with Willow. Their platonic bond is stronger than Huntlow's forced romantic one.

Feeling development.

The way Willow and Hunter like each other is too rushed and unexpected. Starting with Hunter, he met Willow only one time in ASIAS and started to have a crush on her? He only met her once directly and already blushed? And Willow, she treats Hunter the same way she treats everyone. Only until Hunter has power and saves her does she fall for him. It's so rushed all of the sudden. Some people say they live together in Luz's house for months so they have feelings for each other. But there are no bonding moments between them besides the cutting hair scene. Even though the show is cut short, from Willow's scrapbook, she and Hunter don't have any bonding moments between the two of them.

Comforting.

It's one sided again. Hunter is understanding and sympathetic towards Willow. Meanwhile, how Willow tries to comfort him is questionable. He just lost Flapjack and Willow isn't understanding at all. She gives him the Flapjack picture, causing him to feel grieving again. He's been struggling to hold back his grief to focus on helping others. This backfires really back. She should have waited until Hunter brought things up about Flapjack first, just like Gus. He knows Hunter is a Grimwalker since the Day of Unity, but he doesn't bring anything up first and waits until Hunter says it first. He thinks about Hunter's emotions after being traumatized by Belos 

Also, when Hunter looks upset, Willow should have stayed to continue to comfort him?! Instead, she acts like she's the one who is hurting and leaves. Imagine you're feeling sad, someone tries to comfort you. You haven't felt better since you need time, they feel sad and leave you. Now you feel guilty because you can't be happy to make them happy. This is making things worse. Hunter can't even make himself feel calmer after Flapjack's death, yet now he'll feel guilty because his own sadness and grief makes Willow feel sad! Also, when Hunter calls out, she keeps walking and ignoring him. 

In conclusion, Willow and Hunter are better off as friends. They don't have any romantic chemistry or deep understanding. The ship is so forced and rushed.

Personally I find the chemistry between Luz and Hunter obvious and if the show was created even 5-10 years ago no one would have much of a problem with Hunter and Luz shippers. It would’ve been what everyone expected to be endgame. Sure, I love lumity, it’s a cute sapphic high school romance. But narratively, there’s a case to be made for lunter while lumity is more just to be cute. Plus Luz is bisexual so any argument about erasing her sexuality doesn’t make sense. Plus it’s not like fandom is on the same level as the actual tv show like if a group of people want to imagine Luz and Hunter dating that does absolutely nothing to take away from the canon sapphic romance! I don’t have anywhere I feel like I can express this without getting literalky DOGPILED by Twitter teenagers who think the end all be all of queer liberation is making cartoon teenagers kiss.

I somewhat heard that type of rant that I've been interested to discuss before.. But I think it's better if Hunter has been introduced first than Amity tho. To make Hunter as a Male Lead. Yet the romance plot of TOH didn't go on that route. Because (ugh, another straight couple in Disney)

Unfortunately, everything has been already set by arranging Willow and Hunter as a pair instead Hunter is compatible to be paired with Luz because, Luz is with Amity now and both had feelings for each other before Hunter came. So I can understand what they're trying to defend the sapphic canon ship because THEY NEED LGBTQA+ REP, so if there is a straight couple in their favorite cartoon/show, the fans will gone RIOT and they will forced to make the straight couple to stay friends or platonic then shove it to everyone's throats. But their annoyance of not wanting Luz (who is a CANON BI) had a chance to NON CANONICALLY be together with a GUY who has 10x potential chemistry than Lumity. (I also love Lumity too from enemies to friends to lovers). The thing is, Willow shows to become the heroine for Hunter yet still GoldenLuz/Lunter scenes has more sparks even tho they're jumping to make a side couple (Huntlow) alongside with Raine and Eda (Raeda).

And the biggest and shittiest agenda they've got in the TOH fandom is to make these two characters (Luz and Hunter) as sibling-coded into their dynamic which is a HEADCANON. But FOR THEM IT'S A FACT because of the quarrel, all that banter and starting to helping and protecting each other away from danger/harm. And yet they theorize that when we look at Lunter, it's like there are both young Philip and Caleb.

So the issue of Lunter is because the TOH fandom can easily took it down or banish the ideas and options about Luz and Hunter to become a non-canon ship especially boy x girl ships in general media where the main protagonist is a BISEXUAL/GAY/LESBIAN or part of the LGBT rep. Some of them are a bit oversensitive by the "non-canon" ships might be ruined their canon gay/sapphic ship. Like only you can ship this MC with their same gender and NOTHING ELSE. I tried to keep away from the shipping discourse because the majority wants Lunter to see as siblings, and then they will despise somebody in every fiber of their being who ships Luz and Hunter where they are both BI for each other. Like who are they to have a right to demand a person who just wanna ship without their validation? Toxic TOH fans ain't had a right to accuse somebody because they LIKE a ship that they DON'T like. Yet also the Lunter shippers didn't wish for Lunter to be canon as well. Because they can ship them without a problem canon or not-canon as long as they don't attack nor cause such any harm to others. Yet these antis has so many claims to prove that their ship Lunter is wrong and there's nothing to support of shipping them romantically. So they will non-stop accusing Lunter shippers based on their ship which i migt turned out to become 'problematic' by many.

Luz and her bisexuality is the purest rep where she likes and attracted to guys and girls. Yet when they keep telling to such people that it will erase her sapphic love between her and Amity if Luz is going to be with Hunter in the long run.. That doesn't mean Luz isn't Bisexual anymore. How can these people pushing the hatred towards Lunter where they haven't heard the word "multishipping?" So every shipper has options which good ships to be shipped with this character. They never acknowledged poly ships too so, it's too late to speak up to toxic anti Lunters out there. Stubborn as hell lol. As a Bisexual, people must understand that they cannot ruined their Bisexuality by liking or dating a guy!

Luz Noceda: Luz is obvi staying with Amity for the rest of her life. Luz is hardcore gnc, and legit uses any pronouns. He slays. They’re still bisexual :)

Amity Blight: Amity is a cis girl that’s a lesbian. I Like it that way. I know lots think of Amity as transfemme or demigirl, and I like those ideas, I really just want a cis queer like Amity :) (also she’s Maybe demisexual)

Honestly I love huntlow. Despite the short amount of time they were on screen (CURSE YOU DISNEY) but they were still great and I love them

I’m gonna be completely honest, I don’t like romantic!finessa, in fact there was even a period of time when I really hated romantic!finessa (don’t get mad but I actually have the finessa tag blocked because I don’t like it). I understand why people like it/I see the appeal of it, but it just doesn’t do it for me. I see Finral and Vanessa as the besties of all time, the friends that sing karaoke every Friday night, dare each other to jump off increasingly more dangerous things before they both break their legs, and eat far too much ice cream together.

When it comes to Finral and Vanessa, the only character I ship Finral with is Finesse and I don’t ship Vanessa with anyone (though I am partial to Vanessa x Charlotte). Also there’s not a lot of good m/f relationships like this in shounen, so to see one like theirs makes me so happy. I love physically affectionate platonic relationships, especially with m/f friends.

I know how much you love Finessa so I don’t know if this was the answer you were hoping for but I do feel like in another life I would be so annoying about them. But in this life, it’s gonna be a no from me.

How is Huntric incest if Darius/Alador is varely just a screen they share in the ending?

Also, by that metric, wouldn't Lumity and Huntlow have to get cancelled or something? Because Camila says: "I never expected to be the mother of 6" when referring to Luz, Vee, Amity, Gus, Willow and Hunter? Bam!! They're all siblings now.

And as cute as the Dad Darius is because we want Hunter to be loved and belonging, Darius could just be a mentor to him, and that's not bad.

For me it's more of Darius grieving the loss of his mentor, The Golden Guard, and redirecting that energy into becoming a good Mentor and being the positive guidance this teen needs.

We do have a good reference that there is a type of contract to legalize one's adoption when King formalized being a Clawthorne. We never see that with Hunter and Darius, or Camila and the Hexquad for that matter. So, it's up to interpretation.

That take me to the last point: Hunter IS a Noceda-Clawthorne just like Luz.

The sibling energy between Luz and Hunter is hard to deny, Luz welcomes him as family, Camila and Hunter can bond through her favorite books the same way Luz connects with his dad through TGWA, both being arcs or acceptance and healing, he likes wolves just like his new mom!

And Hunter reconnecting with the family Belos took from him and all his predecessors first by being found by Flapjack which we know is THE palisman of Evelyn/Caleb and later him being accepted into the Clawthorne because there is no denying Belos was right: from all of the grimwalkers he is the one who resembles Caleb the most.

Abd what did Caleb liked? Magic, wonder, wood carving and palisman.

The narrative works in a way that both Luz and Hunter belong to both worlds.

Uhhhhhh, welp sorry for rambling i just believe the Hunter and Edric are incest to be a VERY weak statement considering the ending.

TLDR: we don't have set in stone iF Hunter is being adopted by Darius, Darius and Alador getting together/married and Hunter having a romantic relationship with anyone. As far as we know Hunter/Willow could just be platonic.

THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I THINK- on owl house Twitter everyone throws the word incest everywhere cause there's BARELY any critical thinking when it comes to found families. I swear to God.

On top of that, even with such little screentime, the fandom eats it up like crazy. And that's not a bad thing until people have gotten worse whenever they see huntric shippers lately. There was never any valid reason to dislike huntric cause it's not even REMOTELY problematic, but because of the Aladrius/Dadrius nugget, these fuckers count this as a "victory" just so they can watch the huntric ship die.

Over SMALL screentime, and ambiguity. Like you said, Darius personally is more of a mentor, than he is a father to Hunter. I also think Darius and Alador were barely developed enough. The blush feels like an afterthought. Not to mention Darius deserves better, Alador's redemption is kinda rushed to me.

How I think marriage would look like in the boiling Isles.

First, marriage as an institution can NOT exist in the Boiling Isles if they are a Queer Utopia. Marriage is the way that society rewards coupled people, if you're single you're frown upon, don't have economic benefits, and sometimes it can even affect your job. Which means that for the aro-positive (tho aro ppl can be married) queer positive world of the boiling Isles this is completely contradictory.

HOWEVER partnerships that look like marriage do exist: odalia & Alador, Willow's parents.

What do I propose instead?

There's a magic ritual, that is not marriage but the closest they have to it.

Taking my inspiration from a soul mate au fic I read once. This ritual bounds souls in a way that the persons on it can feel the physical pain of the other (though in lesser afinity).

Also, I do think it is monogamy in its nature, in the sense that you can only be soul bond to one other person, 'cause you know, it would be agony other wise. However this bonds can fade or be broken with time (mainly when they are use by the people on them to hurt each other, or themselves).

I think this headcanon goes in hand with the Isles more gruesome way of doing things.

Anyways, small Lunter idea that kinda dunks on Huntlow a bit. Imagine a version of “For the Future” where everything is the same except when Willow holds Hunter’s pinky, blushes at him, and tells him that he’s one of them, Hunter doesn’t blush back and just sincerely thanks them all for being such great friends.

Then he lets go of Willow’s hand and runs over to Luz where she’s admiring her new Palisman and almost yells “I’m so happy for you!” with a bigass smile and blush on his face. Then he takes her free hand in his and kisses it.

But seriously, this is such a cute idea. It honestly makes a bit more sense to me (also in lieu of the fact that we never really saw the Huntlow relationship blossom that much). Hunter just cares for/loves Luz so much.

Within the scenario, I'd imagine Luz being so flustered by the sudden change in Hunter's tone. She doesn't know whether to take it platonically or romantically (she's still with Amity for now), but she can't lie to herself and say she doesn't have feelings for Hunter. This might be the little incident that pushes her towards him though~

As for Willow... she's a little dejected, not gonna lie. She really hoped Hunter would return those feelings, even if subtly. She won't say it, but being called just 'friend' by Hunter hurts a lot more than she thought it would.

When it comes to Hunter's side of huntlow, one of the most compelling aspects to me is him getting comfortable with wanting, even when he doesn't feel entitled to it.

Hunter's experience with love is very depressingly one sided, with him putting everything into his devotion to his Uncle, and receiving the bare minimum (at best) in return. He's never dared to ask Belos "Can you sit and talk with me for a while? Can you please think fondly of me? Can you be kind to me?" because he's been programmed to believe that this is far more emotional labour from Belos than he deserves to ask for and he should be grateful with what he is given.

Hunter has resigned himself to not expecting much from relationships. Any trace of kindness will have Hunter pledging undying loyalty to whoever offered it to him, because he believes that person is going above and beyond what Hunter deserves.

He's not going to stop them from being kind to him. He will do anything for it. But I wonder if he sometimes feels guilty for accepting it so wholeheartedly. For being too weak to resist the warmth because he's been starved for so long.

Anyway. This friendship with Willow, the budding romantic feelings and the (eventual) relationship.

The popular consensus around the time that Labyrinth Runners aired, was that Hunter wouldn't even be sad if Willow rejected his feelings because her friendship is enough for him. And while I agree that remaining friends with her is first and foremost Hunter's priority, I don't know if he wouldn't be sad. At least a little. Because in this hypothetical scenario, if Willow rejected Hunter, that means that he must have taken a huge leap and done something that he never thought he had any right to do. He asked for more. He revealed to her that he wanted more.

This is a tricky concept to articulate without giving some people the impression that I'm saying Hunter would believe he's entitled to Willow's romantic attention and if she rejects him, he would get all mopey about it. I'm stating quite the opposite.

Would he gracefully accept being rejected? Yes.

Would he make her feel bad about it? No.

Would he continue to treasure his platonic relationship with her because he still adores having her in his life? Of course.

But would he be sad? Even a little? Well....what I'm saying is that I think it would say a lot about his growth and his feelings of self worth if he was a little sad.

He deserves to feel sad.

I think very early on, when Hunter first cut off Belos, he thought he had everything. He had food and shelter and clean clothes and books and a sewing machine and safety and warmth and fun and love. Everyone was so nice to him. This was practically a utopia.

But as time goes on, he should eventually come to terms with the fact that he's not the luckiest boy in the world, but he simply has what everyone is entitled to. These aren't luxuries. They're rights.

And I think an interesting mental journey for him is realizing that it is not disgustingly ungrateful for him to continue wanting, even when life feels idyllic.

It's not selfish to want to kiss Willow, even when being her friend is already so wonderful.

It's normal to want. It's human nature. And he is somewhat human, isn't he?

I like the idea of Hunter taking initiative in steering his relationship with Willow in a more romantic direction (with her consent, obviously). I like what it says about him and how secure he's become in himself.

It demonstrates that even if his insecurities still linger, he is willing to seek out things that he would have once believed himself unworthy of.

Maybe this thing with Willow won't work out. And that's okay. It's just life. But he at least wants to try. He wants to pursue a relationship. He wants more.

I think it puts him in a humiliating position. But also a brave one. Empowering too.

I would like Hunter to stand in front of Willow and unapologetically ask "Will you love me please?"

Uk honestly guys unpopular opinion here, I know people are upset by the lack of ‘canon’ Huntlow being shown via a kiss or another romantic gesture but I kinda love that it wasn’t. I love seeing everyone’s content for them being together and in love, but I also like personally headcanoning them as a flavour of Queer Platonic and I like telling my sad little shrimp brain that that’s representation in their whole story all tied together by the lack of a kiss or explicit romantic display on screen. Like both options are amazing! But i like that both options are available for us uk?

Oh my gosh i hope this doesn't sound silly or anything but THANK you so much for outlining everything i Really Don't Like about huntlow. GOD. i only got into toh SUPER recently and i have literally felt like i watched a different show because everyone cannot shut up about it. why. why. It literally sucks?

and i LOVE hunter, he's one of my favorite fictional characters ever, and willow is Fine, but i still don't even get, like, why'd they even include huntlow in s3 when it was being shortened so much? personally, i feel if you removed everything ship related between them from the whole show, absolutely none of the plot or characters would be affected at all. the ship is just so boring and adds nothing to the characters, plus it really bothers me how hunter and willows platonic relationships with other characters are SO much more interesting than their romantic one and all those just feel so. shafted? in favor of like 2 scenes where they look at each other and the crowd goes wild or something. they've had like. A handful of scenes together in total. it's so underdeveloped and again Boring!!

i don't know. i was really hoping for a focus on luz and hunter as one of the main dynamics of season 3, not to mention how gus should've been the on to comfort willow in for the future to parallel their first meeting instead of hunter. just. YEAH NO YOURE RIGHT. If you took out the romantic implications of hunt//low, literally fucking nothing would change plot-wise. It adds nothing meaningful or good, and in fact actually makes their characters LESS interesting and more diluted rather than if they were implicitly platonic. It also plays into the terrible trope of “most important person in the world above everyone else is a romantic partner”. It’s just bad and not at what TOH is about. It’s just. Ugh. A platonic relationship would’ve been so much better and more intriguing. I also really, REALLY wanted more Luz and hunter interaction this season- and I really thought we were gonna get that after TtT- but no. Romance instead.
