Just got fully caught up with Your Turn to Die. Thoughts under the cut!

Fucking loved it.

I first gave this game a shot two years ago and while I enjoyed it quite a bit, I found myself bouncing off because I wasn't a huge fan of the point-and-click adventure style puzzle solving.

Fast forward to today and holy shit am I glad I stuck with it. The shift in gameplay styles in each chapter is super novel and I had a ton of fun adapting to each of them. While I think the minigames could use some work (saving Gin from the cage and a few of the chapter 2 attractions were kind of awful), the overall gameplay loop is a lot of fun.

I think most of my grievances with the gameplay are because it's being made in RPGMaker MV. It's an engine issue - not much you could do about that at this point. Later chapters fix a lot of these issues by using the game's strengths (analysis, puzzle-solving, character knowledge) a lot more often than just "click on this thing before a timer runs out!"

Some of the logic during debates can be a little strange, too. A few times in the first two chapters I found myself getting really frustrated because, while I was technically finding potential arguments and item-statement matchups, they weren't the ones that the game wanted, so it counted them as incorrect. Also, not being able to draw statements out of characters without lowering the timer in the Gin/Q-taro minigame kinda sucked. However, I had none of these issues during the chapter 2 main game and the chapter 3 banquet, so overall the game improved on that front quite a bit.

Music isn't great, but it's one dude doing his best with garageband loops. At the very least, each song fits its respective moment super well. I'd love to see this game with an original soundtrack, though...

The art is great. Character portraits are super dynamic, character designs are super solid and memorable, and the backgrounds look absolutely fantastic. There are a few awkward character portraits (Q-taro and Gin's can be a little strange sometimes), but those are nitpicks. Game looks great.

The characters and story... hoo boy, where do I even start? I don't dislike a single character in this game, which was a shock coming from the Danganronpa series. The worst I can say is that some of the characters weren't super interesting, but that was only for like two of the dolls in chapter 3. Big fan of Keiji, Sou (Shin?), and Reko. Every character feels unique and feels like they have a place in the story. Even some of the first characters to die are given proper characterization as the story goes on, meaning that really any character can be someone's favorite.

Sara is a pretty good protagonist, too! I often have trouble relating to protags in these kinds of games, but Sara is fairly interesting in her own right. If she were a side character instead, I think I'd like her a bit better... but hey, she isn't, so I'm not judging her on that. She's a fine protagonist with lots of character.

The story has the highest Revelations Per Hour of any game I've ever played. God damn. You get zero down time, especially in the latter two chapters. I haven't been this surprised by a game in a long, long time. Fuckin' love it.

By the way: On my playthrough, I've chosen Reko over Alice and Kanna over Sou. No dolls have survived.

Overall I loved what there is of YTTD so far and can't wait for even more in the future! Also, Alice is trans and you can't convince me otherwise.

i don’t remember much from the black room tbh? i remember it feeling sucky but nothing too in depth

it’s kinda weird tho cus while most of my canons are pretty canon compliant save for a couple things (like i rarely ever have non canon relationships or anything like that) i do remember dating nao, and im also pretty sure sara came out to me as aro or aroace but that’s still kinda iffy i’m not rly sure

also we unofficially had like a found family thing it was so great ajdjdhsh me nd nao were together, sara was like a sister to me and we sorta adopted kanna<3

ooooh it’s actually coming 2 me now ok my most prominent memory (in-game) is when nao died actually, and when i played the game i voted 4 kanna but i remember sara voting for shin with like barely any hesitation sjdjdjsjw man i loved her so much /p aside from in game tho i do remember when alice got convicted for murder and breaking up the band n stuffs, man it was so stressful like holy shit,,,,,,,, it was so shocking too i never expected him to do something like that :(

How different do you think Shin's character, or the story in general, would be if Shin had been a girl instead (let's call her, I dunno, Shinko. Souko can be her false name)? Obviously I don't believe it would make a /tremendous/ change to either the character or story, but it's just something interesting and fun to think and discuss about.

I agree that’s a fascinating topic!! At the core of Shin’s character is someone who worries tremendously about how others perceive them. Would the others perceive Shin differently if Shin were a girl? Would fem!Shin adopt new strategies to counter different kinds of expectations? Even subtle changes in the writing could make the story feel very different to us.

Personally, I’ve always thought that one of the best cards up Shin’s sleeve in canon is that he’s a man! Because we take men’s words seriously, even if they’re liars. If Shin were a woman, she might struggle more to be believed.

Before I go any further, I’ll keep calling her Shin, since Shin is a gender-neutral name. (That’s a plot point in the game! When the cast wonders if “Shin Tsukimi” could be the alias of one of the girls.) Based on my quick research, it seems like “Sou” is a masculine name. While “Shinko” and “Souko” sound sweet to me, I feel weird making up Japanese names, since I’m not Japanese. So I’ll keep using the original names, but I’ll try to be as clear as possible.

When I brought up your question to my sister, she pointed out to me that we could play this out in two ways. The first is the way you suggested, that fem!Shin pretends to be fem!Sou. But we could also do this the “Shakespearean way”; what if Shin was a girl pretending to be a boy? What if fem!Shin still chose to adopt the persona of the strongest man she knew, Sou Hiyori? This route would be especially emotional if fem!Shin were a trans woman or nonbinary, and still felt compelled to hide something essential about herself in order to survive. I don’t believe I’m the most qualified person to tell this kind of story, but that premise sounds intriguing. The subtext of Shin’s arc is already about repressing your true nature; this would simply be making the subtext text.

(Obviously that type of plot point can be handled in bad taste! But I think it could be a thoughtful exploration of gender issues, if written well. The focus of Shin’s name reveal here should not be “shock value,” and should instead feel like the natural culmination of her arc—that’s how Shin’s name reveal already feels in canon, so the new sentiment should mirror that. I think it also helps that we have another trans character in Alice, who lives more openly, and would bring a necessary perspective to this type of story.)

But let’s go back to the first way that you suggested, that fem!Shin pretends to be fem!Sou. What are some changes we might see if our lying antagonist presented herself as a woman?

I definitely think her biggest disadvantage would be that we take women’s words less seriously than men’s. To use a sad example, I think even Sara struggles with this. Would the group take Sara as seriously as a leader if she didn’t have Keiji backing her up? I don’t think they would.

In contrast, Shin is a liar who tries to command the group’s attention by behaving outrageously. This is already an incredibly dangerous gamble in canon. It’s made even more difficult by Shin beginning the game with a timid personality. I can imagine Fem!Shin struggling even more. It wouldn’t be a tremendous change, like you said, but you could definitely play it up. Maybe Fem!Shin would need to rely even more on acting “cutsey” to get what she wanted, if folks wouldn’t believe her when she tries to sound confident.

Perhaps Q-Taro might even throw Fem!Shin under the bus in the First Main Game, like he does with Nao, Gin, and Kanna? I remember that my sister and I joked that the reason Q-Taro doesn’t call Shin “useless” in canon was because of the unspoken “Bro Code.” (In other words, Q-Taro wouldn’t target an adult man—even one as weak as Shin—because that would endanger himself too!)

On the other hand, folks might be more “delicate” with Fem!Shin, and less likely to threaten her with violence? That would be an advantage! I’m especially thinking of how the group goes on a witch hunt for Shin in the beginning of Chapter 2, and Reko says that she wants to beat up the “beanie bastard,” while Keiji says he wants to throw handcuffs on Shin. Later in Chapter 2, after Shin takes the Sacrifice Card from Q-Taro, Q-Taro “stomps around” in a rage planning to attack Shin! Would they talk differently if Shin were a woman? It’s possible!

The downside of men being “taken seriously” is that we overlook their vulnerabilities. Shin is frail, but this is mockable in canon because he’s a man. If Shin were a frail woman, that would be expected. I think folks would be more careful with their threats and jokes if Shin were a woman. This also ties into how people often don’t take it seriously when men are victims of abuse—something masc!Shin likely struggles with in his regular life, since being an abuse survivor is an important part of Shin’s character.

Being a woman could also subtly change Shin’s relationships with other characters!

For example, Shin’s power games with Keiji would look different. On the one hand, I could imagine Keiji trying to be “nicer” to Fem!Shin, at least in the beginning. On the other hand? We could make this darker. I could imagine Keiji flirting with Shin to intimidate her. But instead of trying to “push her away” like he does with Sara, he’d be trying to put Shin in her place. Keiji is a master with words, and he could use them to devastating effect to remind Shin that she’s a woman while he’s the man in control. (To be clear, there’s no reason Keiji couldn’t flirt with Shin in canon! I’ve even written a ficlet of this exact scenario that I never intend to publish. I’m simply thinking that it would appear more “normal” for Keiji to flirt with another woman in public, and Keiji is concerned about appearances in this Death Game too.)

What about Shin and Kanna? One detail I thought of is that Fem!Shin might feel a little more hurt that Kanna sees her sister in Sara instead of her. Masc!Shin can rationalize that Sara is a girl, but Fem!Shin has to rationalize even more. I started thinking about how Fem!Shin might worry that she’s too old or not pretty enough for Kanna’s affection? Personally, it makes me emotional in canon how Shin was sure that Kanna would pick Sara over him if she had the Sacrifice. We know he feels self-conscious about it. I like to wonder what his thoughts were. Fem!Shin’s worries might look a little bit different, even if they’re worrying about the same problem.

As for Shin and Sara, their rivalry would also look different, even if it’s subtle. Fem!Shin would lose the advantage of “being a man,” though she still has the advantage of age. Maybe Sara would sympathize more easily with another woman? Maybe she’d feel a little sad that Fem!Shin won’t join the group of “The Idiot Girls”? Or perhaps their arguments would turn even pettier. I do want Sara to still be able to attack Fem!Shin to try to claim the smartphone!! Just because you’re a woman, don’t think I’ll go easy on you!

I will write things that annoy me about every yttd character and then the things I love about every yttd character, no one asked for this but I am bored

Part 1 out of 3

Sara: literally nothing about her annoys me, maybe her uniform but besides that I love everything about her

Joe: This is mostly the fandom's fault but I hate how some people water joe down to only "uwu sunshine baby", he is positive a lot of the time, but he's a teenage boy, he won't always be cheerful, some people in fanfics literally don't let Joe have problems and it's just so 😡. BUT I absolutely adore how he is still relevant in the story even after he dies, and how it doesn't feel obnoxious that he's still present in the story but he isn't forgotten

Keiji: this is my personal opinion but Keiji just makes me uncomfortable yk. But I like how well it is portrayed how men are taught by society to keep their feelings to themselves, also I like how he feel morally grey even when he's on the side of the protag

Shin: His fashion sense, literally what, like ik he's like a job hopper but you didn't have to make him look homeless 😭. But his character and how his sudden personality change is explained in a way that didn't look like it was used only for shock value is something I love

Kanna: there's literally nothing I don't like about her, maybe that she was easily used by shin but that's not that much her fault. And I love how she is able to have character development in a way that still makes her act like a child (which isn't that common in games/anime but it should be)

Gin: Sometimes how he's put in trouble so often is annoying, but it's not for no reason at all so it's justified. I love the gin mastermind theories a lot

Q-taro: I WAS SO MAD AT THIS DUDE FOR THE FIRST CHAPTER AND THE FIRST HALF OF THE SECOND CHAPTER. But I like how subtle and not in your face his character development is, and also his motivations of coming back alive to the orphanage

Kai: I'm pretty neutral about Kai tbh, so there's not really anything that annoys me that much about him, but I really like how he plays such a big role in the story even after death

Nao: She was annoying to me at first, but not really anymore, her relationship with Mishima was really cool, their bond was noticeable without rubbing it in your face, and also the ending where Sara escaped with nao is just so 😭✋

Mishima: I don't have anything that annoys me that much besides how fucking underrated he is. I really like his bond with Nao and even if he's the first death, he doesn't feel forgotten either, I think they couldn't have picked someone better to die first, OH ALSO, him being the protag in your turn to shine is so epic

Reko: Some people really just water her down to goth lesbian and just- no- But I do love her fashion sense, also how even after she destroyed the bongos you could tell she cared about alice, I just feel like nankidai nailed the sibling thing

Alice: STOP WATERING HIM DOWN TO UWU TRANS BABY FOR THE LOVE OF GOD HE'S MORE THAN THAT. His efforts to reunite with Reko were just so- 💔💔💔💔💔💔, I really like how he accepts he isn't the best person, and even if he says bonds don't matter, he still cared about people

Hey, I'm Shin Tsukimi/Sou Hiyori from Your Turn To Die. I'm looking for anyone, really. In my timeline I was trans, Reko and I made it, so we lost Alice and Kanna. Keiji and I had a very...complicated relationship. It was romantic, but it was debatable whether it was abusive or just using a bdsm style to cope, because there were still moments where it was nice. Sara was involved as well, I don't think it was romantic, but there was something there. Keiji was a lot softer with her than me. Kanna and I were close, too, she was like a younger sister to me, and I really did sort of snap after losing her. The real Sou and I also were romantically involved before he disappeared, which was brought up several times on the 4th and 5th floors by Midori, but that one was a little more obviously abusive.

sara: sara is a she/they bisexual :D some of this IS influenced by my friend, mari, who id kins sara and i just see her as the irl sara chidouin so sara is a she/they bisexual, leaning more towards men.

joe: joe is a he/they bisexual (leaning more towards women) oops. again influenced by my OTHER friend, milo, who id kins joe and i see as the irl joe tazuna... and off-topic but he and mari are best friends and it’s so cool im friends with the irl joe and sara guys

keiji: keiji is pan :] he had an online boyfriend in college and it was really sweet.. tho he does like to date guys more because he feels more comfortable opening up towards males. uses the pronouns he/him.

kanna: kanna’s a kid so she’s not able to decide yet (n we don’t know her actual age so she might be way younger than i think) but she goes by she/her :D

q-taro: q-taro is the straightest man i’ve ever seen LOL sorry uses he/him. but he’s also not afraid to admit that he finds a guy attractive n probably attended a few pride parades with the kids from the orphanage to support them :]

shin: OHH THIS ONE IS SO TOUGH. i feel like shin would either be gay, but im also leaning towards aroace (i feel like his relationship w midori did some numbers on him and tbh i cannot see him being romantically interested in someone). uses he/him primarily, but doesn’t mind they/them :>

reko: reko is a lesbian she’s literally the gayest thing in yttd. she hates men and it SHOWS it’s canon n i dont see her dating a man anytime soon i am a solid rekonao shipper. she uses she/her but honestly would not care if any others were used.

nao: nao is bi, leaning more towards women. i picture nao being that one bisexual who only talks about cute girls and never cute men (probably comphet). she uses she/her :D

kai: oo kai.. kai... kai is so difficult. i also can hardly see them being romantic with anybody. but i also do see them being a very very good malewife and caring quite deeply for their partner. im gunna go with pan as well. they use they/them pronouns primarily, but! is okay with he/him :> he/they go go awooga

gin: gin is also. a child 12 years old, no sexuality for him. i feel like he’d get most of his info ab the lgbtq from elder sibling figures like sara n joe tho :D so he’s supportive of it! uses pronouns he/him

mishima: mishima uses he/him and is bi! he’s very quiet about it though, and he’s quite oblivious and tries to see everyone as a potential friend (opposed to a romantic interest). so he doesn’t really get crushes often lol

alice: Our canon trans king y o yo uses he/him and he’s ! bi! leaning more towards women! he doesn’t really seek romance however, he just wants 2 focus on himself for now :>

ranmaru: i hc ranmaru being non-binary! he/they! and gay (nblm)! mentioned this in my other post, but he had a pretty toxic ex and that helped them realize that he’s never really been attracted to women, and that was a whole mess of comphet. they’ve only come out to a few people, and the people that he has have been very supportive :>

naomichi: i hc kurumada being straight, he/him. he’s also really affectionate with his friends, so much that they think he’s gay lol

hayasaka: i hc hayasaka being aroace (he/him) he’s never felt any romantic attraction to anyone and the thought of it makes him very nervous

mai: mai is bisexual, leaning towards women, and she uses she/her! mai loves dating ladies. she loves being a wife, pampering people is something she adores :D (and she would also not mind someone being a wife to her. she loves femme lesbians)

anzu: Another she/they bisexual awooga. in my little au anzu had a really big crush on ryoko for quite a long time before she realized ryoko was straight :( guhrugj pain

hinako: hinako is also a child but she uses she/her. surprisingly good at remembering pronouns and sexualities tho

2-2 hands down!! the raised stakes, the way your choices now GENUINELY matter.. you caused reko/alice’s death and now you have to live with the aftermath of that, everyone working together to escape and for an extension when that fails!! the shin reveal and him desperately trying to save kanna! and how could i not love the joe ai scene slfjdj i sobbed, i put my hand up to that screen against his and sobbed man 😭😭 nothing will ever live up to that chapter/part

26. Do you have any headcanons for any characters?

YES HI i am here to spread the trans kai agenda 😌 he/him but also gnc as fuck. kai who is the spitting image of his stunning mother and took to homemaking so well because it was what she did and being with her and helping around the house were some of his happiest memories <3 the only other hcs i can think of at the moment are sexuality ones so i won’t go too off BUT i will say… that yes i think keiji is bisexy, NO i don’t think he ever got any because he’s too much of a loser <333

uhh tbh im not sure?? im the type of person who likes all of the popular characters, opinions, & etc… mmm i like ranger? but idk if that’s an unpopular opinion,, i think keiji and sara would be an amazing brotp if ppl didnt actually ship them… and here’s one i found online: i think shin and kokichi aren’t that alike.

26. do you have any headcanon’s for any characters?

mainly sexuality headcanons,, joe & sara are bi. shin, keiji, and pretty much almost everyone else of the male cast are gay. alice is trans. reko and nao are both lesbians… etc… non lgbt headcanons, though… i think ranmaru and anzu are a godly brotp,, i think if they were friends and not in a death game, they would have max’s & eleven’s dynamic from stranger things. and they would also go to karaoke and sing “wannabe” (spice girls) & a bunch of lemon demon songs DJJCJD

30. did you vote for kanna or shin?

i actually watched a no commentary gameplay instead of playing it myself, but i’ll always vote for shin. no questions. shin is one of my favorite characters but i’d rather to what shin wants me to do (which is to protect kanna and not vote for her),, also voting for shin leads to the best/least angsty route sjdhcjd

YTTD Gender/Pronoun's And Sexuality Headcanon’s

Sara Chidouin - Sara is genderqueer and bisexual .

Joe Tazuna - Joe uses he/they and is pansexual...but didn’t realize he was LGBT until Sara told him. They were talking about crushes one day and Joe was like “There’s this cute boy in my class!” and Sara isn’t judging but she also didn’t know he wasn’t straight so she asks “A guy? Are you attracted to both genders?” Joe is confused by her confusion and is like “Yeah!…Isn’t everyone either attracted to both genders or gay?” Sara had to have a long talk with him.

Gin Ibushi - Gin doesn’t really think about his gender and sexuality at this point in his life. But eventually he figures out that he’s genderfluid after hanging around Reko/Alice/Sara for a bit and talking to them about gender.

Keiji Shinogi - Keiji uses he/him pronoun’s and is a semi canon bisexual character! He has a lean towards men.

Alice Yabusame - Alice is a trans man who uses he/him pronoun’s and is demisexual and pansexual.

Reko Yabusame - Reko is a lesbian that uses any and all pronoun’s.

Nao Egokoro - Nao is pansexual and uses she/her pronoun’s, but isn’t upset if she’s referred to as they/them or he/him.

Kazumi Mishima - Mishima is trans and uses he/they pronouns. He is attracted to men, but chooses not to label his sexuality as to not be put in a box.

Q-taro Burgerberg - Q-Taro is gay...but he hasn’t figured that out about himself. He’s so devoted to his career and helping the kids at the orphanage that he’s never really had time to explore his romantic options. But if he did he’d realize that he could only imagine himself being friends with women. He also uses he/him pronoun’s.

Kai Satou - I’m continuing to spread my nonbinary Kai agenda! Also they’re attracted to men.

Kanna Kizuchi - Kanna uses they/she and has just realized she’s a lesbian.

Shin Tsukimi - Shin is an asexual gay man who uses he/they pronoun’s. I refuses to believe that I’m wrong about this one. /J

Dolls

Ranmaru Kageyama - Ranmaru is trans and uses they/he pronouns. He’s wearing bandages because they were walking home from top surgery. He’s also the token straight character.

Naomichi Kurumada - Naomichi is trans and gay. He uses he/him pronouns.

Anzu Kinashi - Anzu doesn’t know what pronoun’s are and is a lesbian. (Jokes aside she uses she/her.)

Mai Tsurugi - Mai is a trans lesbian that uses she/her pronouns. Good for her!

Shunsuke Hayasaka - Shunsuke uses he/him pronoun’s and is aroace.

Hinako Mishuku - Hinako is a lesbian demigirl.

Some thoughts about Shin and Alice, and the darker side to their relationship

Last night when I was looking through my queue for Alice-centric fanart to push to the top for his birthday, I realized I had a lot of Shinalice posts in there. It got me thinking about how part of the appeal of their dynamic--and the desire to see them have a friendship or a romance--is the “knight in shining armor saves the damsel in distress” aspect of their backstory. So far, they haven’t discussed this with each other, but as fans we know that Alice murdered Shin’s abuser Original Sou, thus “saving” Shin. A typical happy ending for this kind of story, after the knight slays the dragon, is for the knight and the princess to get together.

But something I’ve been thinking, is wouldn’t it be more interesting if it were more complicated than that?

When Original Sou died, Shin’s life wasn’t automatically “fixed” and “happy.” He lost one set of problems, only to be replaced with a different set of problems. It’s easy to imagine Sou telling Shin that he was worthless without him, and Shin internalizing this. Shin lost his abuser but he also lost his closest friend, and he didn’t have the resources to move forward and process his feelings in a healthy way.

This is moving into more headcanon-territory, but it would be especially heartbreaking if Shin was financially dependent on Sou, and then he lost that security too. Then he would have had to transition to being financially dependent on his parents instead, which would have been painful and humiliating.

Anyway, lately I’ve been imagining a scenario in Chapter 3 where it comes out that Alice accidentally killed Hinako in his First Trial by leaving her to die. And then Shin has an outburst like, “Isn’t that typical of you! Stupidly ripping apart people’s lives without thinking about the consequences!”

There’s a part in the bongos side quest in Chapter 2 when Alice tells Sara about his guilt for the murder, and how he wishes to atone for how his actions harmed people. He says that he wishes to help his own family, but he also says--in a line that I found very moving--that he wishes to help the “victim’s family” as well.

...I am... / ...not a person who asks selfish things. / I intended to atone for my crime...! For the victim's family!! And for my own...!!

Alice’s “own” family is Reko, who was heartbroken by the murder. But who is the “victim’s family,” if not Shin?

I think it would be very interesting if Alice and Shin could have a discussion about this. I’m always very interested in stories that deconstruct the “knight in shining armor saves the damsel in distress” trope. Such a discussion could easily lead to more tragedy, with Alice despairing over the unintended consequences of his actions, while Shin becomes more hardened.

But, we can also imagine these two men pulling through in a more positive way, with Alice committing to the path of redemption and taking advantage of his chance to help “the victim’s family” at last. Perhaps Shin could also start to move forward healthily if he learned to see Alice as a genuine friend, something he has desperately needed all his life.

I think that would be a cool fanfiction anyway, to give Alice a chance to be a real hero that way.
