I just don't care for the critique that succession centers whiteness. 1) I'm not saying it's without fault but the whiteness is a very fucking intentional pillar of the show and if people actually understood the show properly they'd get why it's like that and 2) what ppl who say this are identifying is an inherent issue with Hollywood as a system, not necessarily with succession. Because, yes, the amount of media that centers whiteness in it's critique of capitalism/colonialism is a huge systemic issue. But there is a world of difference between a show like Succession that is, for lack of a better word, intentionally weaponising whiteness to make a point, and something like Killers Of the Flower Moon which is almost totally condescending in how it critiques capitalism and colonialism through a white gaze. In both cases, you have whiteness bring centered, but in Succession's case it's self-contained and deffers to nothing but the system itself. In something like KOTFM, you have whiteness being centered OVER the Indigenous people, and individual white people are constantly deffered to as "the true big bad" as a very individualised, localised critique......i think if people want to say that media critiquing capitalism and colonialism shouldn't always be about white people, then they should say that, and advocate for actual systemic change in a white supremacist industry. stop acting like individual shows are the problem instead of symptomatic of a bigger problem. Because even though Succession is smart about centering whiteness, one thing you should ask is why you're more likely to see a show like that than a show that doesn't.

The painting is a perfect plot device because it doesn't just work for the romance. Because, lord knows, we want more of that from Mike's plot in season 5. And the painting beautifully sets that up too. The painting opens a seamless door to Mike's desire to be a hero who is able to save and protect his loved ones who have been constantly endangered.

Will painted him because he loves him and Mike is gonna find that out, yes.

But that painting existed and was used in the first place to shut down Mike from talking about himself as not special and correct his self-view into viewing himself as the hero he wishes to be.

Will sees Mike as a hero. Romantic. But that opens the door to really dive into in season 5 the fact that that is important to Mike. The fact that at his core, Mike just wants to save people.

What a beautiful balance and way to really lead into that all in one: the way we are getting a closer look at Mike and his view of himself and how he wishes he was seen is by someone seeing him that way.

We are gonna learn even more about Mike's mind in season 5 and I am so excited. An expansion on the van scene but not on what Will said, on what Mike said. We skip over that too much. But what Will said was just a setup for season 5 to talk more about what it was in direct response to.
