Love that 2023 is becoming the year of ‘actually? fuck this.’

WGA, SAGAFTA, and UPS have come across my dash today, but there was the Canadian Federal Worker’s Strike earlier this year and the various ongoing airline strikes in Europe too. Granted that I don’t know a lot about those last two in particular, but I find it somewhat telling that many of the industries whose workers were particularly abused during the pandemic are now striking. And they should. They did their jobs to pull people through the most strenuous parts of lockdown and got dumped on for it, both by their higher ups and the worst parts of the general public. 

Big changes move a little slower than we’d like sometimes, but one bright spot in the abyssal pit that was the pandemic is a rather urgent sense of working class unity. It’s not universal, obviously—bootlickers have always and will always exist—but the pandemic really spotlighted how much being working class sucks and how needless that suffering is. You used to have a blue collar vs. white collar animosity running through any discussions about stuff like this, and that has taken a very firm backseat post-lockdown.

A lot of it is down to the fact that a lot of people had time to sit around and learn, even if they weren’t actively trying to. They saw it. They saw people being treated like garbage by their jobs in every sector of employment. They experienced—in a very personal and organic way—the soulless indifference to human pain that we’ve allowed to become the accepted norm in businesses across the world. 

That kind of injustice puts resentment in your chest. So deep you can feel it at your spine. You can’t do much about it at first, but the next time you encounter a similar injustice, you won’t have indifference or a passive hope that kindness will win. Often, it’s something that would alone be somewhat inconsequential. A lit match has very different effects on concrete and gunpowder, after all. All the same, that event can often serve as the starting pistol for societal change bubbling beneath the surface. 

I feel like the WGA strike is that event. It’s a very publicized strike, mostly because it’s headed by a group that knows how the media machine works. They have connections and skills within that area; they don’t have to explain their grievances to journalists who may or may not be receptive. It’s pushed worker’s rights up to a profile that ensures they’ll be covered in tabloids as well as op-eds and financial columns. That is very much a good thing.

It’s not the first one. It’s not the hardest fought. It’s not the most important by itself. But it is a fight worth having, and a signal that better things are to come. As long as we win, of course.

I genuinely hope American media sucks for a while! I hope the big companies keep trying to churn out shit and that it’s all embarrassing garbage! I want it to be extremely apparent to everyone how important the writers and actors are to create good media and that they deserve to be compensated appropriately!!!

It's still surprising to see people say that when they see the upcoming strike post I made that this is the first time they're hearing about it, especially because I've seen several posts now talking about the same strike.

That being said: regardless of what kind of blog you are, please spread the news about the genocide, the strikes, boycotts, etc.

Even if you are a small blog, spreading word allows for more people to know what's going on and also do their part in protests and strikes, and maybe even the right people will be able to do more than what you're able to do.

And reminder: there is an upcoming strike on February 18th-25th. Prepare accordingly, protest, boycott, call your reps, and spread the word so more people are aware.

I will say I get the vibe that a lot of peoples interest and support for strikers is a bit too much for a vicarious ‘burn it down’ thrill, rather than for the actual goals of a strike.

Like UPS has agreed to come back to the table and it is very possible they will concede to Union demands and avert a strike. And if that happens (so long as the union does not make concessions on its key demands) it’s a good thing. It’s a victory for the laborers. It is the same ultimate conclusion that a strike would intend to produce except without the workers having to go on (not so great) strike pay for a week or two.

#I understand to an extent bc I think such a major strike would be very politically significant for the labor movement #But UPS submitting to union demands to avert a strike also accomplishes this. Maybe in a less visible way but all the same #Also on a personal note I would love to see UPS get absolutely fucked but again: strike goals are more important here

a quick word about the writers guild strike, for those of you who currently AREN'T guild members but would like to be one day: the WGA has always strongly enforced its right to ban from future membership any non-member who crosses the picket line and engages in scab writing, aka writing for any of the struck companies during the WGA strike.

so if you're seeing job openings for screenwriters at places like netflix, amazon, paramount, etc and you're thinking "hey, maybe i'll apply and get my foot in the door," just know that you WILL be scabbing and you WILL be barred from ever obtaining WGA membership. permanently.

Free Palestine - ceasefire now!

EDIT: the strike is over but I am leaving this post up in case any of these resources are helpful

There is currently a strike for Palestine taking place from February 18th, 2024, to February 25th, 2024. During this time, I will only be posting about Palestine on this account and doing what I can to spread awareness. If you are able, I highly recommend participating in the strike in whatever way you are able - something is always better than nothing. Staying home from work and/or school, not buying anything that isn't strictly necessary, using your social media platforms only to boost posts about Palestine, etc., are all ways to help the efforts!

Do you guys notice how when Shawn Fain, president of the United Auto Workers union, started planning a general strike, he did it by a) targeting his messaging towards unions with the ability to safely and effectively strike in large numbers, b) laid out a clear, actionable plan for those unions to follow (setting contracts to all expire at the same time, since many unions cannot strike while under contract), c) is using union contracts to set clear, actionable demands that can be met in order to gauge success and provide an end goal, and d) started organizing FOUR YEARS before the proposed strike date to give people the chance to plan accordingly, because it takes a really freaking long time to get tens of millions of people organized?

You notice how he didn't do it by slapping a message on Twitter saying 'hey nobody go to work on Monday, that'll really show 'em'?
