Alibagh.

In the middle of June, at the zenith of the Indian summer, when birds drop dead mid-flight, my flatmate, her sister, and I took a ferry to Alibagh, a district close to Mumbai that hosts several beaches, mostly untouched and mercifully uncrowded. That was just last weekend. 

I had been to Alibagh over two decades ago, with the creative team at Grey. The girls of the team had not been involved much in the planning and logistics of that trip--the guys had handled it. It was an extremely fun trip that one. So this little getaway of ours had big boots to fill, which it kind of did and didn’t. Let me put it this way: the trip with the creative team had been a pair of neon pink beach slippers with shells and starfish and beer mug detailing on the strap that spelled FUN, and this trip was ballerinas--comfortable, feminine, and goes with everything.

Alibagh falls on the ports side of Mumbai. We took a ferry from Mazgaon Dock to Mandwa jetty, almost missing the ferry because of some last minute route snafu. I was completely convinced that we wouldn’t make it. It was so touch-and-go that when we finally managed to make it, just 5 minutes before the ferry left port, we were delirious and couldn’t stop giggling like we had inhaled glue fumes. I will never forget that morning and that adrenaline. 

The ferry ride to Mandwa jetty takes about an hour. The sea was just amazing, and when we landed, I was pleasantly surprised to see how well they had maintained the jetty, a complete revamp from the last time we had been there. While coming back to Mumbai, we had lunch at a restaurant at the site--mine was a very delicious chicken and pesto pasta. I didn’t take pics of it, preferring to just eat it.

From Mandwa, we took a cab to the hotel, which was...well I don’t want to talk about it. I blame us. We waited till the last minute to book hotels and all the good ones were taken by then. Next time, we’ll do differently...and there will be a next time. 

This trip taught us a lot about the layout and geography of the region, the kinds of beaches, distribution of hotels, cab fares, distances between places and more. The next time around, we’ll make better choices. Not that this one was a bad trip. Everything was fun, except the hotel we booked. 

There’s nothing else to tell except what can be told through photos.

That’s Alibagh Beach. Alibagh beach is a serene and totally gorgeous beach. It’s not frothy and fun, it’s serious like poetry. My flatmate and her sister took several selfies and I walked along the shore and collected jingle shells. I have a plan on how I want to use them. I want to create some physical token for each holiday I am taking. Let’s see how it turns out.

Just look at these patterns left on the sand by the restless sea! And they were all on the same beach.

There was this house on the beach that I really, really liked. I think after everything has been done, I will settle by the sea, in a house with a terracotta tiled roof and a front yard, not in some plush building.

And because we were still under the receding influence of the cyclone Biporjoy, the winds were a bit stronger than usual.

A restaurant we ate at. R&B here stands for restaurant and bar. There was a cat on the scene. 

The trip was satisfactory. We’re doing it again. Bye.
