WIP Wednesday

I've been tagged for WIP Wednesday a few times over the last couple of months (most recently by @rotschopf-thedrow) but I was working on stuff that I wasn't allowed to share for most of it. Anyway, I've been revisiting my Regency AU, so have a snippet of the beginning of chapter 2 :)

Kaidan pinches the bridge of his nose and rubs his eyes in the hopes that the words on the page in front of him will stop blurring so badly. The dull ache building at the base of his skull promises a headache severe enough to put him out of service for the rest of the day soon, and it's hardly even afternoon. Even before the pain began, Kaidan had been considering moving today’s meeting to another time. He’d likely pushed his luck with the Council far enough by arguing against this partnering at all, but the little he knows about Commander Shepard makes him seem the sort of man Kaidan would rather not work with. The Council would not be refused in this matter, however, and now the time set for their meeting is far too close for Kaidan to reasonably cancel it. Perhaps it really is best to have it done with, anyway. He blinks rapidly, and looks at the file again. The commander’s official record lists a number of commendations, which is not surprising. Incompetence is not Kaidan’s concern. The man is, after all, a war hero, and the Council does not employ incapable people. He well knows, however, that official records are not always the most reliable source of information about a person, and the things he’s heard about Commander Shepard unofficially are problematic at best. He has problems with authority, and a tendency toward taking matters into his own hands. Most troubling, however, are the circumstances of the death of Admiral Anderson and the commander’s subsequent disappearance. Officially, Shepard had been cleared of any wrongdoing. Rumors that the official story was not entirely accurate are far too widespread for Kaidan to dismiss them as entirely false, however. Many of them leave a sour taste in his mouth that he cannot ignore.
