Wait hang on you guys, you know when Nona dies in Ntn how her body and organs split at the seams and her skin kinda starts to slough away? That’s like strikingly similar to what happens to people with acute radiation poisoning i.e. nuclear weapons. Irradiated soul Alecto causing Harrow’s body to fall apart?

My theory on the NtN ending:
Cassiopeia wasn't the only one to betray Jod thousands of years ago. She wasn't the only one to see that what Jod was doing was wrong and put plans in place to deal with it.
Anastasia the first almost had perfect lyctorhood and watched her God kill her cavalier in front of her so she couldn't do it. Maybe she really would have died. Maybe she would have gone the paul route. Maybe she would have survived and Samael would still be around. But he was killed in front of her and she had no say in it.
Alecto was odd, and a little dangerous, but she's the soul of the earth and if Jod could kill the most important person to Anastasia of course he could kill the thing who loved humanity so much she gave them power over life and death.
And when the Lyctors were convincing him to kill his pet revenent beast, the pin point of his greatest sin and a being in constant pain and hurt, maybe Anastasia, the one left behind, the one maybe magicked to silence through a sewn tongue, cursed jaw, felt sympathy and kinship with Alecto. Maybe she knew Jod would never truly kill Alecto. Maybe she was the first person in hundreds if not thousands and millions of years to look at Alecto with compassion and actually say "I will help you if only you tell me how". Maybe she made a promise to protect Alecto, maybe she made a promise to look after her while she sleeps. Maybe she made a promise that one day she'd come and wake Alecto up and they'd solve things together. Maybe one day they can undo what John did and maybe Alecto can have peace, finally, one day. And maybe Alecto swore that for the debt of waking her again she would do anything for Anastasia, any one thing, if Anastasia woke her up in a time when things could change.
But by the time Anastasia, frail with her necromancer build and squirreled away at the edge of the solar system, started reaching old age she realized it was too soon to wake her up. Too soon to send her into the lyctor viper pit again, not while Anastasia was so weak. So she tasks her daughter with guarding the tomb. "This door must stay shut until the day comes when the emperor must die" she says, and her daughter repeats this to her son, and so on and so forth until the body in the locked tomb becomes Armageddon. Not locked away for her own protection, not awaiting the day for the tomb keeper to wake her up and try again, not awaiting the day when the nine houses get to restart. No, she's the greatest enemy of god, she must be locked away lest she start Armageddon, locked away for the protection of the emperor and their duties to her tomb an icon for devotion.
But the bloodwards hold for 10000 years and one day the curse of silence will be lifted from the jaw of the ninth house tomb keeper, and the oath to Alecto is preserved in the Anastasian bloodline. And the daughter of the tomb keeper has awakened the monster once again

i love when people make posts confidently asserting predictions for Alecto as though they’re fact. I feel hesitant being like “I predict the main characters will be in it” because what the fuck do I know?

Hi again I am on a Nona reread and having thoughts. This may be obvious (?) but I'm thinking the devils found on Antioch and the Ninth must be the souls of the people who were killed and not resurrected by John.
From John & Harrow's final dream conversation:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hm. Sounds like we have some missing souls. Could they have gone beneath the River? Did John shove the souls he deemed unworthy through the stoma? Why aren't they in the River?
Kiriona seems to describe the devils as revenants, which are, as we know from HTN, only created by something with a soul experiencing a sudden violent death:
Tumblr media
Varun, speaking through Judith, implies that the devils are coming up from under the River via the Tower. He also says that they have been "left too long," which, you know, ten thousand years is a long time:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
From GTN, regarding the Canaan House spirits Teacher is so afraid of, who possessed Colum's body in the way the devils do:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hey, you know what's another way of saying ten thousand million? Ten billion. Now why would that number sound familiar....?
Tumblr media
Hm. Interesting.

Editing to add that this post from @demolitonlcvers has laid this all out and then some!!

This could very well be a reach and it could be just How Magical Decay Works in these books. But to me Kiriona's "my blood can't leave my body" deal sounds kinda avulsion-y — it turns to ash once it crosses a boundary, and using thalergy is the only way to bypass it, at least in theory. It's almost as if she's wrapped in a cocoon of entropy field. I don't quite know what to make of it; I don't think this field is something actually Physically there, maybe it's more about the word choice deliberately bringing back the avulsion scene to mind?? for some reason?? But anyway if Harrow decides to fill the hole in Kiriona's chest in AtN and it becomes sort of her own version of being subjected to the avulsion trial, with all the energy drain and the agonies, all endured to heal the person she loves, I wouldn't be mad at that at all.... It would be very sexy and poetic actually

my favourite theory with no evidence to back it up aside from "he would fucking do that" is that John ab-so-lutely knows how to untangle a cavalier and lyctors soul, it is in fact shockingly easy for him to do and yes, I am not only saying this because it would let us get some really interesting conflict but also BECAUSE THIS IS HOW BABS CAN STILL RETURN TO THE NARRATIVE IN THIS ESSAY I WILL-

Saw this on ig and I had to share. Original post on twitter from @ pinapali. Ofc it’s very little news for atn but us rats are impatient for atn to come out and will take whatever news we can.
My input to this news:
I really hope Gideon and Harrow are the ones getting married because my babies deserve a happy ending even tho I think there’s a very little chance that’s gonna happen because tam tam likes making us cry.

Wow bad dresses for harrow 😍 (probs)

I neeeeeed the scene of John's first contact with Gideon's body, feeling the nostalgia of those pre-resurrection corpses as he hears how her body refused to rot, being told how her death came to be, her sacrifice, oh how strong and beautiful she is.
Her existence is his undoing and his legacy.
Her existence is a double edged sword.
She is the sword the speared fence pierced across his heart.
He drags her soul out of the river. He renames her (but not really). He gives her a first house surname. He wakes her up.
Of all the things he created, the one he had no finger nor intent on is one of the most beautiful and resilient and truly tenderly human.
She's flesh of his flesh and blood of his blood she's Alecto's mirror and antithesis.
Wake gave birth to his blade. Her edges are sharp, he holds her he bleeds.
He doesn't let go.

Alecto Prediction #7
On the Ninth, there is a very specific face paint design that is only used when you’re gonna go fuck someone. Harrow wears this one day in front of Gideon. And the scene goes as thus:
Gideon: “huh. Never seen that design before. Lame.”
Harrow: “if you ever attended to your studies of the Ninth’s traditions, you would know that this, the Skull of the Penitent Taken to Church, has a very sacred and specific purpose.”
Gideon: “wow, so interesting. Maybe you go tell Paul about it and let me get back to polishing my sword.”
Paul, who recently read the Ninth’s new postulant hand book and has popped up out of nowhere: “it means she wants to fuck.”

Just got the visions of what Alecto will look like:
John: you know no one ever asks me anymore how often I think about the Roman Empire, it’s at least twice a day, remember Ceasar?
Alecto: no one remembers the Roman Empire bc you killed everyone in nuclear explosion
Kiriona : what’s the Roman Empire?

This is how it ends:
Gideon is going to take Alecto’s place as the soul of the Earth, because Alecto is long-dead and you can’t go home again. This will not involve her being Gideon anymore, mind you - the soul of a planet isn’t anything like a human being, because it is so large and contains so many multitudes. It contains concepts, like love and hate and forgiveness and mercy. It contains concepts like the freedom of the winds to blow, the mercy of the rains to soak the earth, the forgiveness of spring after a long and devastating winter. All of these, we have seen, Gideon also contains - and so the Earth will be Gideon, after a fashion. Hell, I suspect that the new citizens of Earth might even *name* it Gideon.
Gideon will be big and bright, full of promise and purpose. She will love the people who walk upon her ground, who ply her waters, who till her soil and coax new life from bare dirt. She will be a wonderful place to live - a new paradise, even, if you’re from the dead and dying Houses or the desperately struggling exoplanets. And in all the ways that matter, she will be Gideon.
And in all the ways that don’t matter, she won’t be Gideon anymore. They’re little ways, ways that will only matter to a very few, who will likely tell themselves that this is a good ending, this is the best thing for her, she always wanted freedom and what’s freer than being an entire planet? You can’t lock up a planet anywhere. They will tell themselves not to stand at her grave and weep. She isn’t there; she’s everywhere.
But you can’t kiss a planet. You can’t hold a planet. You can feel the whisper of the breeze through your hair, but it will never be her breath ghosting across your skin. You can feel the touch of the water all around you as you wade into the sea, but it will never be her arms embracing you. You tell yourself that you have no right to her, never did - especially not after how you treated her, especially not after what she did for you and, eventually, did for everyone - but you can’t help it: you miss her. It’s Gideon, and she belongs to everyone - but you miss your Gideon. And she is gone. You will never see her again.
It’s a very lovely and poetic ending and it’ll be a fitting end for the series but I hate it with every fiber of my being because god fucking dammit, those two kids deserved to be able to have their own lives, to learn how to be human beings together, to learn haltingly and with plenty of mess how to love each other in ways that did not rend or scourge. But I truly don’t think they will.
I know, I know, I’m a pessimist, what’s the evidence, etc.
- all of the parallels being established between Gideon and Alecto:
“The resting place of Harrowhark’s one true love,” how it’s Gideon’s sword now lying there when Harrow enters the tomb
The golden eyes
The healing abilities
The forgiveness
The love
The urge to be Harrow’s cavalier, and John’s
The anger
But also, I’m pretty sure Tamsyn said somewhere that all of the series is just cover for one simple, stupid joke. And what’s simpler and stupider than
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m sure there’s a lot more evidence that I can’t remember just now - I’ll add it onto this post later like my little conspiracy board. I just can’t be arsed to look it up right now because thinking about it makes me want to die. But I’ve been very reluctantly working on this theory for months now and nothing I’ve seen has convinced me I’m wrong.
