𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠: chris x reader
𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲: apologies are getting thrown at you left and right, but will you accept them?
𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬: swearing, a little angst
𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭: 583
𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐫'𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐞: the support for the first part was CRAZY i didn’t expect it to have that much hype! thank you guys🫶
forgot to mention this series will have social media and all that as well :)
Tumblr media
the party went on without any trouble, but you were also purposely attached to nate’s hip so you didn’t have to have another intervention with the triplets.
you woke up the next morning to numerous instagram notifications. squinting your eyes, you open the messages. you’re still not fully awake to comprehend who sent them.
Tumblr media
the two of you exchanged a few more words to discuss a time for them to come over, and at this moment, it is that time.
you take a deep breath before opening the door, the three of them staring at you with the same sad expression. your parents are at work, so you guys have the house to yourselves.
they walk in in silence that’s a bit awkward. it feels like you guys are strangers, and it fucking hurts.
you’ve thought a few times about how this grudge against them is so silly, but then you think back at the memories and realize that you’re allowed to be angry. you never believed the saying “LA CHANGES PEOPLE”, but turns out that might be true.
matt clears his throat. “thank you for letting us speak with you.”
“sure.”
glances are exchanged before nick starts speaking. “we’ll say we’re sorry a million times if we have to. you have every right to be mad at us. we let the fame get to our heads too much, and it’s selfish what we did to you. you don’t have to accept our apologies now, but we want you back in our lives, y/n.”
you nod at his words. they seem genuine, but deep down you still can’t forgive them fully. “i’m going to have to give it time.”
now it’s their turn to return the nod. “totally understandable.” chris says.
“but… i do miss you guys. maybe we can… start hanging out again?” you hesitate, taking your hand and rubbing it on the back of your neck.
the smallest hint of happiness spread across their faces. “done. we don’t go back to LA for a few weeks, but that doesn’t matter.” nick says with a smile.
“can i give you a hu—” you cut matt off by squeezing him tight. god, you missed them so much.
you give the same embrace to nick, but pause at chris.
you sigh. “you guys should head back home and hang out with your family.”
now it’s chris’s turn to think it. ouch.
they wave you goodbye and thank you again before walking off of your porch. you head up to your room, your back facing the door until you hear a voice.
“i want to see the note.”
you jump and turn around, seeing chris standing in the doorway. “go, chris. they’re waiting for you.”
“let them wait.” he says, stepping into the room. “i want to see the note.”
because you don’t have the energy to argue, you go over to where your wallet is and take the small piece of paper out. you hand it to chris.
he reads over it at least five times, getting more sad each time he does. how can he forget this?
Tumblr media
“why’d you keep it? after all this time?”
you fight the tears burning up in your eyes, your throat feeling tight. “you asked me if i promised to keep it forever. i said i do.”
you huffed out a laugh, continuing. “at least one of us kept our promise.”
he frowns. “what was mine?”
“that you’d always be there for me.” you shrug. “no matter what.”

The best and worst films of 2020
Tumblr media
Let’s be honest - 2020 was an extremely shitty year for moviegoers everywhere, as the Queen would say an annus horribilis.
Due to the Covid pandemic’s dramatic impact on nearly every facet of human life, cinemas closed, film festivals went virtual and film productions became an intricate mess of insurance and safety challenges.
Yet despite these dire challenges and an unpredictable future, cinema remained very much alive throughout the year, with a wide range of ambitious undertakings snaking their way into whatever form of release seemed viable. Blockbusters receded to the background, allowing a wide range of movies to trickle through an uncertain marketplace that would have been hostile to them even in pre-pandemic times.
So what cinematic gems and unmitigated disasters were dropped upon audiences during the year?
Ladies and gentlemen, may we please offer for your consideration...
HONOURABLE MENTIONS
THE CURRENT WAR - THE LIGHTHOUSE - IN FABRIC - BEING FRANK: THE CHRIS SIEVEY STORY (D) - BOMBSHELL - THE PEANUT BUTTER FALCON - THE SOCIAL DILEMMA (D) - LIGHT OF MY LIFE - THE ASSISTANT - THE LODGE - THE GENTLEMEN - THE WAY BACK - DARK WATERS - 1917 - THE BURNT ORANGE HERESY - THE HUNT
2020′S TOP TEN BEST FILMS
Tumblr media
10. THE WOLF OF SNOW HOLLOW
Hot off the critical success of his debut feature ‘Thunder Road,’ writer-director Jim Cummings’ refreshing yet effective take on the werewolf genre amped up the dark comedy whilst delivering quite a few chills. Tinged with realistically flawed characters and clever scares, ‘The Wolf of Snow Hollow’ might not have been your typical werewolf flick but it successfully managed to bring that classic legend to life once again.
Tumblr media
9. LET HIM GO
Previously last seen together as Clark Kent’s adoptive parents in ‘Man of Steel,’ Diane Lane and Kevin Costner were reunited onscreen as husband and wife again in writer-director Thomas Bezucha’s neo-Western drama ‘Let Him Go.’ Adapted from author Larry Watson’s 2013 novel, the film featured stunning landscapes, full-blooded moments of sudden violence and compelling performances from Diane Lane, Kevin Costner and, most memorably, Lesley Manville’s turn as a gritty and cunning matriarch.
Tumblr media
8. COLOUR OUT OF SPACE
Based on the classic short story by HP Lovecraft and featuring another scene-stealing performance from Nicolas Cage, this clever adaptation was an effective horror film with an unrelentingly grim sci-fi bent. In addition to the truly disturbing and inspired images of queasy body horror, ‘Colour Out of Space’ also marked the eagerly-anticipated re-emergence of filmmaker Richard Stanley (his first time back in the director’s chair since being fired from his 1996 remake ‘The Island of Dr Moreau’).
Tumblr media
7. THE INVISIBLE MAN
Who knew a remake could be so refreshing? With this updated take on the H.G. Wells tale, writer-director Leigh Whannell did just about everything right, delivering a tense, clever thriller with touches of both horror and sci-fi. As the fascinatingly flawed yet appealing tough protagonist, Elisabeth Moss gave a captivating performance in a film that was chilling in all the right ways, packed with plenty of twists and a deliciously nasty resolution.
Tumblr media
6. THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7 (NETFLIX)
Whilst the subject matter of ‘The Trial of the Chicago 7′ shared an uncanny relevance to today’s politically charged times, as a gripping courtroom drama with a stellar cast, the film ticked all the boxes. ‘West Wing’ creator Aaron Sorkin put his trademark traits - razor-sharp wit, rhetorical flair and political insight - to very good use in this masterful retelling of the trial following the 1968 anti-war protests outside the Democratic National Convention.
Tumblr media
5. HEARTS AND BONES
In his debut feature film, Australian director Ben Lawrence created a spiritually rich and immersive drama about the relationship between a grizzled, broken war photographer and a Sudanese refugee. Whilst Hugo Weaving was note-perfect in his portrayal as a crumbling man wrestling with his past, equally impressive was first time actor Andrew Luri who delivered a quiet yet memorable performance in what was an affecting piece of cinema.
Tumblr media
4. TOTALLY UNDER CONTROL (DOCUMENTARY)
Watching a documentary about the COVID-19 crisis in the middle of a global pandemic might not sound appealing but prolific filmmaker Alex Gibney’s latest work was easily the most essential non-fiction film of 2020. Shot safely in secret for five months, ‘Totally Under Control’ played out like a tightly-wound thriller as it placed the Trump Administration’s inept response to the coronavirus pandemic under the microscope.
Tumblr media
3. BAD EDUCATION (HBO)
As far as crime stories go, embezzlement isn’t always the most thrilling subject. However, ‘Bad Education’ turned a relatively simple white collar crime story about a New Jersey school administrator caught stealing money into a compelling drama, thanks to an incisive and nimble script and spot on performances from Allison Janney, Geraldine Viswanathan, Ray Romano and especially Hugh Jackman.
Tumblr media
2. MANK (NETFLIX)
Director David Finch’s dazzling portrait of Herman J. ‘Mank’ Mankiewicz, the screenwriter who collaborated with wunderkind filmmaker Orson Welles to write the first draft of ‘Citizen Kane,’ was a cinematic jewel from start to finish. Similar to last year’s ‘Once Upon A Time in...Hollywood,’ ‘Mank’ delivered a layered depiction of the filmmaking process, whilst Gary Oldman continued to excel at immersing himself in playing real-life characters, this time as the hard-drinking, intellectual screenwriter.
Tumblr media
1. NOMADLAND
Writer-director Chloe Zhao’s intimate drama about an unemployed widow living as a van-dwelling modern-day nomad was a thoughtful, contemplative and reflective piece of storytelling. It may have touched upon mature themes about loneliness, financial instability and restlessness, but ‘Nomadland’ remained an uplifting and hopeful piece of cinema that captured the various bittersweet reasons people choose to live a life on the road.
With an outstanding performance from Frances McDormand, brought to life through the charm of the ‘real life’ supporting cast, great direction and Joshua James Richard’s mesmerising cinematography, ‘Nomadland’ was the perfect film for 2020.
...AND NOW THE WORST!
DISHONOURABLE MENTIONS
VAMPIRES VS THE BRONX - BAD BOYS FOR LIFE - THE OLD GUARD - PROJECT POWER - ISN’T IT ROMANTIC - THE RHYTHM SECTION - WHERE’D YOU GO, BERNADETTE - I’M THINKING OF ENDING THINGS - MIDWAY - YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT - BABY DONE - FORCE OF NATURE - CAPONE - THE NEW MUTANTS - DOOLITTLE
Tumblr media
10. WONDER WOMAN 1984
To quote Red Letter Media’s resident film critic Mike Stoklasa, “this movie was the cinematic equivalent of the Bluesmobile.” Directed by Patty Jenkins, this 80′s-set sequel to the 2017 DC superhero hit was lethargically paced and featured a completely bonkers narrative that made absolutely no sense. Horribly scripted, disjointed and overstuffed (a runtime of 2.5 hours), ‘Wonder Woman 1984′ sadly jettisoned everything that made Jenkins’ original film so compelling. The result? An appalling misfire.
Tumblr media
9. THE GRUDGE
A curiously talented and interesting cast were somehow lured into - and subsequently wasted in - this pointless, tired, reboot/revival of the long-running ‘Ju-On’ Japanese-based horror series. Despite director NIcholas Pesce’s attempt to disguise the rudimentary nature of the plot via back-and-forth timeline jumping, ‘The Grudge’ was just a formulaic paint-by-the-numbers meander through a poorly developed story that existed only to prop up a bunch of uninspired jump scares.
Tumblr media
8. BIRDS OF PREY (AND THE FANTABULOUS EMANCIPATION OF ONE HARLEY QUINN)
There are many movies that have no reason to exist - and this latest misfire from DC Comics was one of them. Directed by Cathy Yan, ‘Birds of Prey’ was a mire of uninspired ideas and recycled genre conventions that got old real quick. Penned by Christina Hodson (’Bumblebee’ being the ‘highlight’ on her resume), the script was as simplistic as it was thin, with needless subplots merely introduced to inflate the film to a decent running time. Even Margot Robbie’s manic performance as the ‘Mistress of Mayhem’ couldn’t save this mess.
Tumblr media
7. JAY AND SILENT BOB REBOOT
What could’ve been a dream film for fans of these two classic stoner characters instead was nothing but a string of cameos and callbacks in a plot-less bore. Director Kevin Smith sucked all the life and fun out of this watered-down story, that suffered from a constant series of awkward and forced jokes that were painfully unfunny. An unfortunate stinker.
Tumblr media
6. AVA
This latest foray into the ‘female assassin for hire’ genre was about as cliched as you could get. An emotionally troubled female killer whose male mentor assumes the role of the surrogate father? Check. Pounding dance music score? Check. Obligatory nightclub fight sequence? Check. Confused love interest? You betcha! Humourless, dry and uninspired, ‘Ava’ played out like a poor man’s ‘La Femme Nikita.’
Tumblr media
5. FANTASY ISLAND
Hollywood’s obsession with repackaging Gen-X childhoods continued with this absurd attempt to reboot the classic 1970′s TV series as a low-budget horror joint under the Blumhouse label. At a dangerously close two hour runtime, there was simply nothing interesting about the film’s characters or its inane plot about a mystical island that grants wishes (a’la ‘The Monkey’s Paw’). Our advice? Turn ‘de plane’ around if you ever plan to visit this ‘Fantasy Island.’
Tumblr media
4. ARTEMIS FOWL
For every ‘Harry Potter’ that explodes into the public consciousness, there always seems to be a dozen or more failed franchises. Sadly, Disney’s ‘Artemis Fowl’ found itself in the latter category. Director Kenneth Branagh’s dull and superficial attempt to transfer this popular children’s book series from page to screen suffered from a lack of character development, an over-reliance in CG effects and featured a lifeless performance from newcomer Ferdia Shaw as the titular character.
Tumblr media
3. HUBIE HALLOWEEN (NETFLIX)
A month before last year’s Oscar nominations were released, Adam Sandler joked on ‘The Howard Stern Show’ that if the Academy snubbed him for his role in the film ‘Uncut Gems,’ he would make a movie “that [was] so bad on purpose.” And that’s exactly what happened. Supposedly a comedy, ‘Hubie Halloween’ was unfunny, disposable and completely devoid of any originality. Sadly for audiences, Sandler signed a four-movie deal with Netflix last year, worth up to $275 million - so we can expect to see more of this shit soon!
Tumblr media
2. ALIEN ADDICTION
Aliens visit New Zealand and get high smoking human faeces? Someone should have advised Kiwi director Shae Sterling that audiences have moved on from such puerile comedies as this abomination. Suffice to say, if anybody ever admitted to finding this film remotely funny, they’d probably be outcast from society. An embarrassment to all those involved.
Tumblr media
1. THE BEACH BUM
Director Harmony Korine’s generic stoner comedy about a prolific poet who drifts through life in a drug-induced haze had all the natural high of an unfiltered, soggy joint and was easily, hands down, 2020′s worst film.
‘The Beach Bum’ was a pretentious and uninteresting movie whose lead character, considered to be an ‘artistic genius,’ was nothing more than a relentless shithead to everyone around him. As Moondog, the semi-naked, bongo-playing, pot-fuelled beat poet, Matthew McConaughey was insufferable and grating in his portrayal of a character you would quite easily want to punch in the face - repeatedly. Blazed and confused, ‘The Beach Bum’ had no plot, no class and no entertainment value whatsoever.
MOVIE POSTERS
From the classic to the abstract, here is just a sample of some of the best poster designs from a highly unusual year of movies.

...AND FINALLY, WHEN WHEN IT COMES TO DIRE-LOG, THEY SAID WHAT!?
Tumblr media
“I've never wanted anything more. But he's gone, and that's the truth. And everything has a price. One I'm not willing to pay. Not any more. This world was a beautiful place, just as it was, and you cannot have it all. You can only have the truth. And the truth is enough. The truth is beautiful” (’Wonder Woman 1984′).
And who could forget this little chestnut of advice...
“That is the only truth and truth is all there is. You cannot be the winner because you are not ready to win. And there is no shame in that. Only in knowing the truth in your heart and not accepting it. No true hero is born from lies” (’Wonder Woman 1984′).

Violets
Tumblr media
Violets: A Joey Hudson Fanfiction
Relationship: Joey Hudson x OFC!Deputy
Rating: All Ages!
Summary: Joey is still figuring out who she is.
Warnings: Gay! SO GAY! Do not read if you’re not okay with that. Cursing, homophobia, slurs, death.
Word Count: 4928
Author’s Note: This is just the beginning of Joey and Madeline! This is mostly establishing who Joey is as a person. I’m so excited about this, y’all! The Deputy isn’t yet the Deptuy in this fic, but she will be.
It’s no secret that being gay in a small town is difficult. There’s maybe only two thousand people in all of Hope County, and that’s being generous. Joey Hudson grew up in Falls End, which had a grand total of about forty-five in it's entirety, again, being generous.
Joey’s thirteen when she first realizes that being gay is even an option. She'd grown up a bit sheltered, although it wasn’t purposeful. That’s just how it was in rural Montana, they were a little behind the times and it wasn’t something people talked about.
It’s October of 1998 and her families small television is on a random news channel, the two people on the screen are arguing about a boy who was the suspected victim of a hate crime in Wyoming. Her father is grumbling incomprehensible nonsense at the television. Her mother shakes her head and turns it off before heading into the kitchen to cook dinner.
Joey doesn't know what a hate crime is. She asks her mom about it and her mom tells her that it's when someone hurts someone because of a prejudice. All her friends are boy crazy, at least that’s what her mother says. She says that she raised Joey with a good head on her shoulders and that’s why she isn’t buying into the boy craze like all her friends. Her father says he’s glad because if any boy came near his precious daughter he’d have to put the fear of God into them.
Her friends are going over a copy of Dolly, reading about The 99 Hottest Guys to Watch in 99. She agrees without enthusiasm when one of her friends tears out a picture of Prince William and says she’s going to marry him. When two of her friends start arguing over who the hottest member of the new band N’Sync is she sides with one of them at random.
When she’s fifteen she has her first kiss, one of her friends is going on a date with a senior boy and wants practice. When Joey’s lips meet her friends for a few clumsy seconds she feels a puzzle piece slip into place and all of a sudden it makes sense.
Joey is gay.
Her father is sick, her mother says it’s lung cancer.  The doctors give him eight months at the most, Joey is a few months shy of sixteen when she’s told her father will die.
In 2001 Joey realizes how fleeting life can be. The world changes forever when the towers fall from the sky, the world gets a painful reminder that nothing is forever. She watches as her mother calls Joey’s grandmother for the first time in almost seventeen years. Her mother’s hands shake as she dials the number and makes amends, life is too short to hold grudges.
It’s in that moment Joey makes a choice.
“Momma, I’m gay.” She blurts out, her voice feeling too loud in the suddenly deafening silence of the house. It’s the first time she’s said it out loud and she feels a weight lifted from her chest.
Her mother blinks at her, her eyes owlish as if she isn’t certain that she heard Joey right and is trying to process it.
“I’m gay.” Joey repeats, her voice is stronger now.
Her mother nods slowly. “Okay.”
Joey’s heart soars, for a split second her world seems brighter. Her secret is out and it feels fucking incredible.
“Don’t tell your father.”
Her heart sinks.
“This’ll only worsen his condition.”
Joey can’t stomach the thought of lying to her dying father, but she doesn’t want to make things worse. She nods her head and agrees to do as her mother has asked.
The idea of her being gay somehow making her father sicker puts a heavy burden on her. She watches everything she says and tiptoes around the man she'd once been close to. When she was little he would pick her up and play airplane with her. When she got older he took her hunting with him, teaching her everything he knew.
Her father dies two months later and Joey can’t help but feel guilty knowing that he died without knowing his daughter. She feels even more guilty that shes secretly relieved, she no longer has to walk on her toes at home.
Her mother has asked her a few times if she’s sure this isn’t a phase. She points out that Joey hasn’t even tried dating a boy yet so how can she really be sure? Their whispered conversations instill a sense of shame in Joey.
Joey promises to try, because her mother is all that she has left in the world.
She’s asked to prom by a boy named David. She wants to say no but she doesn’t because she can’t get the image of her mothers smiling face asking her to please just try out of her head. She allows him to take her to prom, she allows her mother to squeal over how cute the two of them are together and take pictures. She even allows him to stick his tongue down her throat, because she has to try.
After that Joey knows it isn’t a phase.
Her mother doesn’t ask about the boy after prom. They don’t talk about it but her mother knows.
It’s 2003, she’s almost eighteen now and she has to make a decision, she has to grow up.
Her and her mother are having breakfast at a local diner to celebrate her birthday. A rejected half melted candle sits on the edge of her plate of pancakes.
Her mother asks if Joey’s put in anymore thought about her future. She hasn’t.
In the diner a boy who she vaguely recognizes as a kid two years below her is eating alone at the breakfast bar. She knows of the kid, she’s heard the rumors. Joey’s never been one to care about rumors, but now that she’s graduating in two weeks she cares even less.
Further down sits Sheriff Whitehorse, sits a few stools down. He’s already on his second cup of burnt coffee.
Her mother reaches into her purse and hands her a wrapped rectangle with a smushed blue bow. She opens it slowly, trying to avoid making a loud noise as she tears the paper. It’s a book entitled If not, winter. She stares at it for a minute, trying to understand.
“Open it.” Her mothers encouraging voice says in a soft tone, as if she doesn’t want anyone else to hear.
She opens the book and flicks through a few pages, her eyes land on the word lesbian and widen into saucers. Her mother meets her deer in the headlights look with a soft smile, her mother accepts her.
The fact that her mother has done this small gesture brings tears to her eyes, she'd been okay with her mom knowing and not having anything to say. But to have her mom's full support makes a warmth spread through her chest. Her mother accepts her.
A group of boys who will walk the stage with her in a few weeks enter the dinner, their laughter is deafening in the quiet of the diner. The bell above the door jingles proudly, signalling their arrival. The group of boys snag a booth, shoving each other as they all squirm into the worn seats.
At the sound Joey snaps the book shut and sits it on her lap, terrified of anyone knowing it’s contents. It's her secret and she must keep it, she has to.
One of them notices the kid at the breakfast bar and his eyebrows raise, the group takes on an uncharacteristic silence as they whisper to themselves and look in the kids direction. Joey can feel the trouble coming, the boys exude mayhem. She sends a thank you to God that the Sheriff is there.
The Sheriff gets up and goes to the bathroom.
So it begins.
The boys shove one of their friends from the booth, laughing like excited children as they watch him approach the kid.
“Hey, Chris,” The senior says, pretending to be nervous. He shuffles his feet and plays with his hair in over exaggerated motions.
The kid, Chris, glances over his shoulder and mumbles something in acknowledgment.
“Well, I was wondering… If maybe you wanted to go behind the bleachers and make out?” The senior can hardly keep a straight face as he asks, his face growing red from trying to hold back his laughter.
Chris lets out a small sigh and gets up, leaving a few bucks on the counter for his half eaten breakfast. He makes for the door but isn't allowed to leave.
“Michael, please leave me alone.” Chris says, a desperate note in his voice.
Michael laughs, glancing over at his friends for encouragement. “What’s wrong queer-boy?”
Joey flinches at the word as if he'd directed it at her. Her knuckles are white from how tight she’s gripping her fork. She should do something, she knows she should but she doesn’t. Joey is a coward.
She nearly jumps out of her skin when she feels a gentle hand wrap around hers, she glances at her mom and sees the sympathetic look on her face. Her heart twists.
Her mother is asking her not to get involved, because she knows that if she did the same fate would befall her.
Michael jabs a finger into the younger boys boney chest. “Am I not your type?” It isn’t a friendly question, or even a joking one. His words are like razors, the boy flinching as the words cut into him.
Chris ducks under Michael and runs for the door, causing the group of teenage boys to let out loud whoops as they abandon their table. The chase is now on. He doesn’t make it two feet away from the entrance before he’s tackled to the ground. The older boys all gathered around him, shouting slurs as they gleefully landed kicks on him.
Those same words mar the metal of the boys locker, forcing him to wear his shame like a scarlet letter. It shouldn't be shameful, but it is.
With each word and each kick Joey flinches, had she not been so careful that could just as easily be her. But it isn't, it's someone else and she's standing passive-watching it happen.
When she sees red on the sidewalk she finally gets the courage to stand, but she’s interrupted by a low voice behind her before she exits the booth.
“Tha hell?” It’s the Sheriff and he’s staring at the spectacle with a confused look on his face.
It takes him a second but he’s out the door in a flash, yelling and scaring the bullies off. Chris lay curled up in a ball, his face isn’t visible but the small puddle of blood seems to be trickling from somewhere around there.
Sheriff Whitehorse gently brings the kid to his feet and helps him back into the diner. “Donna, grab me some napkins and a bag of ice, please.” He asks the waitress as he sets the kid into a booth.
The Sheriff starts analyzing the kids wounds as he waits for the napkins and ice. Chris is swaying in his seat as if he’s about to pass out. Joey’s a coward, she could have stopped them.
When she sees the Sheriff start cleaning the kids wounds she realizes she doesn’t want to be a coward.
“I’m gonna apply at the Sheriff’s Office, momma.”
She walks the stage two weeks later, and as soon as the ceremony is over she heads to the Sheriff’s Office.
She will help people, she refuses to live the rest of her life as a coward.
It’s 2004 when she completes her training and becomes a Junior Deputy. The first thing she does is work a Sheriff’s Office booth at the Testy Festy. She hands out stickers to the kids while they stand bored as their parents complain to Whitehorse or thank him for all that he’s done.
One of the kids accepts the badge shaped sticker and immediately sticks it onto his shirt, wearing it with pride. He swears that one day he’s going to become a Deputy just like her. Her heart swells as she pats little Staci Pratt on the shoulder and sends him on his way.
She gets her first tattoo in 2008, it is above her heart and says ‘It is what you love’ in flowing script. Under it is a violet, it’s long stem underlining the words. The artist doesn’t question it, instead he says it’s a pretty idea.
Her mother has happy tears in her eyes when she shows her. After all these years her mothers support brings her to tears.
In 2011 Staci Pratt becomes the newest Junior Deputy.
Joey is twenty-six now and has never told anyone but her mother about her secret. She has never had a boyfriend as hasn’t kissed anyone since she was seventeen. Earlier in the year an attempt to repeal the law prohibiting sodomy, failed. In the state of Montana same-gender sex was still considered sodomy.
Joey Hudson was a Deputy at the Hope County Sheriff’s Office in Montana. Her job was to uphold the law and she was gay, in Montana being gay was a crime.
The department throws a small birthday party for Sheriff Whitehorse, it’s held at Joey’s house. It's the first time she's let any of her co-workers into her house, she's nervous that they might uncover some of her secrets.
As her guests walk through her house they analyze everything, Joey is reclusive and none of them know much about her. They greedily drink in every item on her shelves in an attempt to uncover her secrets.
Nancy points out that she must really love poetry, considering the sheer volume of prose that litters her shelves. Joey is uncomfortable and quickly changes the subject by offering everyone beer.
Her secret is safe.
It’s mid 2012 when it’s not safe. She has just arrested Sharky Boshaw for setting off illegal fireworks. He keeps making passes at her and jokingly- or at least she hopes it's jokingly- offering up his body for a lighter sentence.
When she doesn’t so much as flinch or acknowledge his words he says “Are you a lesbian or something? ‘Cause the Boshaw charm always works.”
He must see it in her face, the instant panic that fills her eyes as her body stiffens with dread.
His eyes soften and he goes “Just kiddin. Though I ain’t got no problem with it, Dep.” He gives her a soft smile and a cheeky wink as she tucks him into the back of her cruiser.
Sharky maintains an uncharacteristic silence as they head back to the Sheriff's Office.
In 2013 she is at the Spread Eagle, drinking with Pratt. They’re celebrating his twenty-first birthday with a few of their other work friends. A bar fight breaks out and it leaves a man bleeding on the floor.
He’s groaning to himself and fighting off Pratt who had tried to help him. The drunk on the floor goes by Ace, though his birth name is Floyd. He frequents the drunk tank, sleeping there like it's his second home. Every time he sees Joey he grabs her ass, Staci is pinning him down and keeping him as far away from her as he can.
The other man is being held back by Joey, though he’s still swearing at the bleeding man. It’s a typical Saturday night, there are never any charges pressed, it’s just what happens in a small town.
“I’m fine, get off me, Joey.” He’ll be in the drunk tank tomorrow.
His name is Lonnie, they are on a first name basis.
Someone must have called emergency services because there’s EMT’s walking through the door, they’re a little late but considering the only hospital in the area is thirty minutes away it’s forgivable.
Joey walks back over to Pratt and sighs, bumping his shoulder with hers. Their life exists only in this cycle, Hope County is too small for anything exciting to ever happen. Sometimes she thinks about escaping and moving somewhere with bright lights and more than one or two paved roads.
Her mother thinks it would be good for her, maybe if she moved somewhere like California she could fall in love. Her mom has become almost suffocatingly supportive, she loves it. She has small potted violets all over her house, gifts from her mother, cultivated with love.
Sometimes Joey entertains the idea, but she knows she will never move. The drunk on the floor squirms as the EMT’s try to stop the bleeding and take care of him, his arms flail about causing the two medics to let out low swears. One of them groans as she stumbles away from the man, one of his flailing limbs had connected with her eye.
Joey immediately goes to help. She was in work mode, all hopes of having a good night forgotten. Mary May gives Joey a sympathetic look as she hands her a bag of ice and a beer.
The beer is a reminder that Joey is a person outside of being a Deputy, it's a reminder she needs.
“Here.” She says, offering the girl the bag.
The EMT looks up at her, squinting as she tries to figure out who Joey is. “Thanks.” She mumbles, accepting the ice with a grimace.
The two sit in awkward silence for a minute before Joey speaks up. “Do you want to press charges?”
The girl cocks her head and thinks for a minute before shaking her head. “Nah, it happens. Beats getting stuck with a needle that was just in someone else.”
Joey can’t help but look at the girls hair, the white streak standing out against the rest of her curly brown locks catching her eye. She makes eye contact with the girl and realizes that the girl had caught her staring, her face heats up as she looks anywhere but at the girls face. A few drops of blood on the girls pristine white shirt catch her eye.
“It’s called poliosis, my mom and grandma have it too.” She’s gotten the looks many times, she knew what they meant and had rehearsed her response since she was four.
When she was little her mom got phone calls every year from her schools, asking her to please not dye her child’s hair. She’d sigh and tell them she hadn’t dyed it and that she wasn’t going to dye it to match the rest of her hair.
Joey nodded, taking a sip of her beer to quell the embarrassment that was blooming in her chest.
“I’m Joey, I’m a Deputy for Hope County.” She said, giving the girl a tight smile.
“I figured you were law enforcement when you asked if I wanted to press charges.” The EMT grumbles, wincing as she rolls her eyes.
Joey’s face falls a little.
“I’m Madeline. I just moved here a week ago.” The girl gave her an apologetic smile.
That explained it, in a place as small as Hope County everyone knew everyone. She’d definitely remember seeing someone as pretty as Madeline.
‘That was gay, Joey.’ Her brain hums.
"Want a beer?" She asked, immediately cursing herself.
The girls brown eyes widened before settling into another squint. "Sadly I'm on the clock for another twenty hours."
Joey nodded, fiddling with the label on her beer. She didn't know why she'd asked, it was obvious that she was still working.
“So, uh, you get stabbed a lot?” Why did she ask that? Was it possible for her to not be stupid for five minutes?
The girl, Madeline, giggles. “It's shocking how many people resist when you’re trying to save their life.”
Okay, maybe, her stupidity wasn't that bad. Madeline's giggle was like music to her ears; she hadn't been to church in years but the sudden presence of an angel in front of her made her wonder if she should go back.
Joey snorts and shakes her head. “Trust me, I have some stories of my own.” She takes a sip of the beer and remembers the few wild things that have happened over the last nine years.
“Yeah? Maybe we should have some drinks sometime and talk about the dangers of being good people.”
She splutters at the invitation, beer dribbling down her chin as she tries to process what Madeline had said. Was she asking her on a date? Was Madeline gay? Had Joey finally met another woman who liked women? She could sing she was so excited.
“I could use some friends.” Madeline said, quickly correcting herself.
The small glimmer of hope she’d felt when she thought Madeline could be gay was quickly crushed. Joey’s heart clenched a little but she smiled nonetheless. “Sure, that’d be fun.”
“Ready to head out?” Madeline’s partner asks, saving Joey from having to stumble through anymore conversation.
Madeline nods, pulling the now half melted bag of ice away from her eye. “See you around, Joey.”
As she walks away Joey notices something on her arm poking out from under her sleeve, the dark ink contrasting with the pristine white of her shirt. The tattoo looked suspiciously like a bust of Sappho, one that sat on a shelf at Joey's home. Maybe Madeline was into women, or it could be that she just really liked poetry. Joey hoped it was the former.
Joey and Staci stay for a few more hours, during that time Staci ends up having more alcohol than he can handle. By the end of the night he’s standing on a table belting out the words to Jolene.
She ends up half carrying him out to her car so she can drive him home. He’s mumbling mostly incoherent things but as she tucks him into the front seat and is buckling him up one thing he says stands out.
“That EMT girl was cute.” He slurs his words but due to Joey’s own curiosity about the girl she picks them out with ease.
“Let’s get you home.” She says in response.
He grabs her arm before she pulls away, he stares at her through a fog but there’s an intensity in his gaze. “Y’know I love you no matter what right?” He mumbles before dropping her arm.
Joey pauses, wondering if Pratt knows too, and the idea doesn’t bother her. The realization floors her.
He’d been like a little brother to her for the past few years, ever since he was sixteen he’d started showing up at the office and helping out with whatever he could. He’d done a bunch of volunteer work with the department and as soon as he turned eighteen he’d applied. Joey had been his mentor and the two had reached family levels of closeness.
A week later Joey and Staci are having lunch in the same diner where Joey had realized what she wanted to do with her life. The place holds a special spot in her heart.
“Hey! EMT girl!” Pratt shouts, Joey’s head immediately swivels around to look at the door where a confused looking Madeline is squinting as she tries to figure out who Staci is.
Her eye has a faint bruise around it, but it isn’t swollen. The slight discoloration is the only thing that proves that last week actually happened. Joey had begun to worry that the angel that invaded her thoughts was a figment of her imagination.
She’s in casual clothing now, a green cardigan with light blue jeans and cowboy boots. Joey decides that casual is a good look on her. She wonders why she cares so much about what she’s wearing and her brain tells her that it’s because she thinks Madeline is cute.
“Hey?” ‘EMT Girl’ as Staci had called her, looks completely lost, Joey feels a bad for her.
Madeline takes her eyes off of Staci and looks at Joey, her eyes immediately lighting up with recognition. “Hey!” She says smiling at both of them as Staci waves her over.
As she approaches Joey notices that Staci is suddenly taking up his entire side of the booth, spreading out as much as he can. “Sit with us!” He says, her only option being beside Joey.
Madeline looks at Joey, asking for permission before sliding into the seat as soon as Joey scoots over to make room.
Joey mouths 'bastard' at Staci when Madeline isn't looking, he smirks in response.
“What’s your name again?” Staci asks, tilting his head innocently at her.
Joey knows that Staci knows Madeline’s name, because he’s been mentioning her to Joey nonstop for the last week. Joey acts like she doesn’t care but every time Staci mentions the girl her heart jumps a little bit.
“Madeline Reese.” She gave him a sheepish smile, “I don’t remember your name either.”
“Staci Pratt.”
The waitress comes over and takes Madeline’s order which is just a grilled cheese with fries and a cup of coffee. Staci and Joey have a conversation with their eyes, Joey is giving Staci a warning look while he waggles his eyebrows at her.
The three make casual conversation, the entire time Staci is asking Madeline personal questions and sending looks to Joey when he thinks Madeline isn’t looking. Joey is certain that Madeline has noticed because Pratt refused to be subtle.
After they’re done with their food Pratt gets up to go to the bathroom, leaving Madeline and Joey alone. Once he leaves Joey realizes he was being her wingman, or at least trying to. Considering that she’d never actually come out to him and that neither of them were sure if Madeline was into women he’d done his best.
The two sit in silence until Madeline speaks up.
“He’s cute.” She says awkwardly and Joey’s stomach sinks. Madeline chuckles and shakes her head as she stares in the direction of the bathroom.
“Straight people really don’t know how to act, huh?” She follows up, her voice low as she turns to look at Joey. She has a cheeky smile on her face as she looks over the woman beside her.
“What?” Joey splutters in response. She’s not denying it but part of her thinks that she hallucinated Madeline saying that because she can’t believe the girl she hasn’t been able to get off of her mind for the last week isn’t straight.
Madeline looks uncertain for a minute. “They always try to get the few gay people they know together.” She explained, there’s a look of fear in her eyes as she stares at Joey.
Joey stares blankly in response, still unable to comprehend that the beautiful woman beside her likes women.
“Shit, you’re not? Fuck. I’m so sorry, dude. I didn’t mean anything by it-” She starts backtracking, she looks genuinely scared now as she edges her way out of the booth.
“No!” Joey answers, her voice high pitched and strained as she forces herself to do something, to say anything.
Madeline pauses, halfway out of the booth, still looking like she’s going to run. “I am.” Joey admits. The relief in the air is palpable, as the two grin at each other like morons. That’s how Staci finds them when he comes back from the bathroom, if he had taken his sweet time time washing his hands and fixing his hair well, who cared.
“Do you wanna grab coffee sometime?” Madeline asks, ignoring the fact that Staci has slid back into his seat and is watching them with a shit eating grin.
Joey’s heart flutters. “I’d love to.” She has a date, her first since she was a teenager.
“Great! Here, I’ll give you my number.” Madeline pulls a pen out of the pocket of her cardigan and writes down her number in loopy numbers, Joey notes the way her sevens have lines through them. She writes hers the same way.
“I’ll call you.” Joey promises, beaming dumbly as she shoves the napkin in her pocket, taking care to make sure it's safe.
Madeline nods eagerly before saying goodbye. Joey watches in awe as she leaves, she doesn’t look away from the door until Staci clears his throat.
“You’re welcome.” He says. He looks like the cat that ate the canary, causing Joey to lean across the table and smack his arm.
“Shut up.” She grumbles, but she doesn’t mean it. She’s on cloud nine thinking about her future date with Madeline.

#1 all because of the El Croquis
So this is my first fic, and I’ve never written Van before so if I could get some feedback on how I did with his dialogue/movements/general aura I’d love that. I wrote in second-person POV for the present-time stuff and I wrote in first-person POV for the flashback stuff. I hope it’s not confusing! Also, I feel like this could make a great sequel. Just let me know if you have any feedback. Thank you all so much for reading! Enjoy!
This one’s about a reader who studies architecture and is looking for an architecture journal called El Croquis in the library, but comes across something much better in the end.
-------------------
In a sleep-deprived haze, you sit back in your chair under the warm, dim fairy lights above you. With weary hands you open the first drawer of your old worn desk, grabbing your black leather journal. Wobbling slightly as you twist around your piano keyboard adjacent to the desk, you pick up your wine glass off the concrete floor and turn to the journal laying in front of you. From the ceramic cup you spun yourself on the pottery wheel in school, you find your best fountain pen. Staring at the paper, you have no words --- you need to record what happened tonight before sleep whisks you away and you forget everything. You begin:
Today I found another piece of myself.
You swirl the last bit of red wine that’s left in your glass, and finish it off. You remember that show on Netflix, Sense8, and marvel at how that’s not far off from how truly connected people can become in reality, and how sometimes the universe brings people into your life that can fit so perfectly in every way possible.
You pick up your pen and start to write again.
Browsing through the architecture library with a close knit group of people from my studio, following our professor through the narrow shelves, and her showing us book after book of the most beautiful work imaginable, I felt at home. All of us stood huddled around her in the tiny, three foot gaps between shelves; an incredibly intimate scenario for a university library. Nooks and crannies for reading and perusing, peeking at each other through the spaces where books weren’t.
At the end of the library perusal, our professor said goodbye to us and left through the glass doors around the corner of the long hallway. I looked down at my watch and realized I had the rest of the day to work on whatever I wanted, and maybe go out for a few drinks tonight with some friends if the forecasted rain didn’t hit until later. I was lucky that my last class ended at 11:00a.m. on Fridays; just before the cafe rush at the front of the school of design’s library got too hectic.
As I walked down the same long hallway my professor and fellow students had exited from just moments earlier to grab a cuppa, something peculiar caught my eye. A sign for the most recent El Croquis journal boasted that our school had obtained a copy and bound it already -- I looked up the call numbers for the book and I rushed to the back section of the library to try to find it.
Squinting at the paper numbers taped to the shelves, I couldn’t find it. I slowly walked up and down each aisle of the library, and then back to the sign. “Coming to Section D on April 16,” it read. April 16 was today. Just then, I had a thought - what if it was still in the back room? I hated going back there because of the dingy lights and the damp, gravelly smell of cement blocks. I decided to brave it to find the newest edition of one of the world’s best architecture journals and have a look at it.
After asking permission from the library techs to go into the room, I went down the stairs to the basement. I opened the creaky door to the back room, which was quite spacious; it was situated underneath the campus lawn space, which was about the size of a football field. The books and shelves that had become too worn to show off in the front part of the library were cast off into this room; the back corner is also where the books were bound by the student library techs. I walked the main corridor between the shelves to the back end of the room where I was sure I’d find the book.
Instead, I found six guys huddled in between makeshift room dividers made of bookshelves arranged in a mildly square shape, passing a joint around, sitting on top of stacks of books, and cackling unintelligibly in thick British accents. The smoke was surely going to infiltrate the books’ pages and never leave.
I had approached quietly up until I stepped on some crumpled paper that had most likely been flung from this microcosm the boys had created.
“Oi!” the one with the short, dark hair yelled as he heard the crunch of the paper under my shoe, “lads we’ve been found!” and all but one of the guys jumped and bolted past me with wild expressions, gripping their bag of joints tightly, laughing down the main corridor toward exit, sending my hair and nearby papers into a flurry. The racing footsteps echoed down the hallway.
I peered down at the man who was still there in the makeshift room. He was asleep on the floor, head laying on one stack of books and his arm propped on another smaller stack next to it. He looked dead peaceful. His eyelashes were impossibly long, and rested there near the tops of his cheekbones, which were quite chiseled. His jaw was a little crooked, and his lips were plump and the corner of his mouth was resting on the top of one of the books in the stack. My eyes traveled down the rest of him, realizing his gold necklace tucked into his black shirt under the leather jacket, and how his arms looked toned from here… and that’s when I noticed it. The new El Croquis. On top of the stack under his arm.
I moved over to him and slowly dropped down to my knees so that I could get a better angle on the situation. I thought, Should I wake up the guy? He’s not really supposed to be in here anyway, and I really want to get my hands on that book.
I decided to shimmy the book out from under his arm and try not to wake him; I’m not one for conversations with strangers, especially considering how weird the conversation for this situation would be. I slowly reached to pull the El Croquis from under his elbow and twisted it around so it wouldn’t hit his limp fingers. A corner of it caught on his leather jacket and my breath hitched - pleasedontwakeuppleasedontwakeuppleasedontwakeup - I thought with each beat of my heart as my pulse sped up. He stayed asleep. I lowered my purse to the floor, allowing my movements become a little daintier, and I opened the book’s cover a bit so the jacket sleeve would slip away from the corner. I gathered myself for a second, kneeling on the ground with the El Croquis tucked into my chest, and internally cursed myself for going through this much trouble for an architecture journal. I stood up, and padded away from him as quietly as possible.
I got to the newer portion of the library and checked the book out at the counter. I put it in my purse and set on my way to get a cup of hot tea from the Starbucks on the other side of campus because during my El Croquis escapade, the library cafe had closed for the employee’s lunch hour. I looked outside, and surely enough with the day I had already experienced, it was raining harder than it had in a long time just to add onto the trouble I went through. I decided to use the back exit of the library since I had nothing but the denim shirt I was wearing over my black short sleeve shirt to shield me from the rain.
A rich, cold rain was beating down on everything, and much earlier than the meteorologists had expected. Jumping out into mayhem from the stale purple hallway, I walked half a mile to my apartment. The drains were gurgling and sipping on the water as it ran down the street. The shirt I was holding over my head gradually got heavier and heavier with water, and moisture was seeping in my hair and in my boots but the reflection on the street and the buildings twinkling behind the droplets and the wet pitter patters on my hands filled me with a kind of nostalgia. It was like a scene from a movie.
When I stepped across the threshold of my apartment in sodden shoes and threw my keys down on the table next to the door, I peeled off my clothes and took a searing hot shower. When I got out, I wrapped myself in a towel, sat on my bed and pulled out my phone. I had a text from Jen asking what my plans were for tonight, another text from Chris asking the same question, a text from Brooke telling me which bars to hit up tonight, and three missed calls from a weird number.
I answered everyone’s texts, and contemplated calling the weird number back. I left my phone on the dresser and made myself a snack in the kitchen. I was taking the contents of my backpack and putting them in their respective places; pencils and pens in the cup, books in the bin under the desk, the El Croquis in plain sight on the nightstand, ready for night reading. I heard a faint ringing and went to get my phone again. It was the weird number from earlier.
“Hello?”
“Uh, hellooo, is this y/n?” The caller’s accent was British, like the guys from the library earlier. Oh, geez, I thought to myself.
“....Yes, may I ask who’s calling?”
“So uh, you left your wallet here in the library, and, well, I found it and got ya number off the studio access card.”
Great. So much for a sly reconnaissance mission for the El Croquis. The cute sleeping guy now had my wallet AND he knows my name AND he’d seen my shitty ID photo.
“You there, love?”
“Yeah, sorry. Um, where can I pick it up from you? Thanks for not leaving it there.”
“Well, I’m hangin’ with my friend Larry - his mate’s an exchange student here from where we’re from and he’s got a house ‘round here. I can text ya the address. He’s ‘avin a party tonight anyway so we’ll be here all night. Oh, and you’re welcome.”
There was some muffled talk about “gig” and “tonight” and “lids” in the background as he spoke.
“Right, so I’ll text you the address. I’ll see you later then, yeah?” he said into the phone.
“Yeah. Also, one last thing - what’s your name?”
“Van.”
“Alright Van, thanks, didn’t want to keep thinking some spam caller was trying to reach me again.”
***
Shortly after Van had called and sent me the address, I texted Jen, Chris, and Brooke and told them I was going to a party in the neighborhood tonight. They replied that Brooke had found some fantastic club on the other side of the city and they were all going to try it out. I told them I had to go to this one party to get my wallet, but they responded they were already on their way to the other choice. Sigh. I was riding solo. I ate a quick dinner, put on some minimal makeup, and wore my signature “architect” look: black jeans, black top, black chelsea boots, and some geometric jewelry. I went for some boxy cube earrings.
I walked to the house since it was only about a 10 minute walk from my place. Someone was exiting as I was entering the house, so I made my way in and looked around for Van. I spotted him in the corner of the kitchen chatting to one of the guys who had been smoking in the library earlier, who had big bouncy curls and thick-rimmed glasses. As I approached, the curly one said, “Come to bust us again?” in a cheeky tone and I rolled my eyes.
“Van, could I get my wallet please?” I asked him.
“Mmmm…. It seems there’s been a slight hiccup in your retrieval of the wallet.”
“What do you mean there’s a hiccup?” I asked.
“I can only reveal the wallet’s secret location if you stay and party with us lids until midnight.”
I stared back at him with an expression of disbelief for a moment, and then checked my watch. He just winked at me with a smirk on his face.
“That’s four hours away, Van,” I said through my teeth. I was starting to get a little pissed off.
“Did ya come here alone?”
“What?”
“Where’re your mates? Pretty girl like you has to have mates,” he said with a smile.
Ignoring his latter comment, you replied, “They went to another party across town.”
“So, love, looks like your schedule’s completely free! Here, come have a drink with me and meet everyone.”
Van hovered his hand over the small of my back and led me out to the patio outside where the makeshift bar was. He stopped me on one side of the bar and walked around to the other.
“Now then, what would you like?” He looked sort of cute, playing bartender.
“Vodka Sprite please. And make it a strong one.”
***
9:00p.m.
Van and I had just made the rounds through the entire house. He introduced me to literally everyone that had come in to party, and was cordial to everyone. He even made me snicker a few times with cheeky comments to others, even though I was supposed to be mad about him making me stay here until midnight. By now, I had consumed 2 ½ Vodka Sprites, mixed by Van himself, and Van had drank as much as I had plus what he had before I arrived. We were equally tipsy, and I was slowly forgetting that I was here for my wallet.
“Low” by Flo Rida had just come on over the speakers, a certain change from the previous chill music they had been playing here; it’s obvious whoever had the aux cord was ready to turn the party up. Van said, “Let’s dance!” and I clutched my red solo cup tighter. It was getting harder and harder to resist his charm. He wiggled his hips to the music, and it was obvious he wanted me to join him and the other people dancing in the living room. He hopped over to me, took my hand, and then used his other hand to take my solo cup and chug the rest of the contents while he walked backwards into the living room.
With no cup in my hands, Van had the opportunity to swing me around and around and around the room with his hands in mine. He wove in and out of people, sometimes having to raise our hands high to get over people who weren’t moving out of the way in time for us to plow through the room and outside where even more people gathered. We danced, tipsy and all-smiles, only focused on each other, for a long time.

10:00p.m.
Another hour had passed and Van and I had grown a lot closer. He couldn’t keep his hands off me - but in a respectful sort of way. He put his hand on my back to guide me to the next person he knew, and he had his arm around me when he was talking to people. He kept looking at me with those big, blue eyes framed by dark eyelashes, inviting me to participate in the conversation. Inviting me into his world.
We ran, hand in hand, back to the bar outside, and he started mixing everything he could together, throwing caution to the wind while I watched him with my chin resting on my hand. I was enjoying watching him. A little bit of vodka, a little bit of rum. Something blue; something gold with bubbles. This and that. He shook it with his hand over the rim of the cup, and then poured half of it into another cup, not afraid to accidentally pour some out all over the patio, and knock over a few bottles of liquor in the process. He held one out to me, and linked our right arms together over the bar. With our arms still linked, we drank from our own cups.
As soon as the liquid hit my tongue, I had to spit it out, and from the sound he made, Van did too. We both spit the nasty concoction into the grass, noses wrinkling and throats burning and lots of coughing. Van fell over me onto the grass and kept coughing and laughing at the same time.
A few minutes later, whatever he mixed hit the both of us and we were stumbling everywhere, having to mutter slurred apologies to the people we bumped into. One of those people I recognized; it was Kyle, one of my acquaintances from a lower-classmen studio.
“Heyyyyy Kyle!” I called out to him, even though he was about four feet from me.
“Hi Y/N! How’s it going? Great party, right?”
“I’ll say,” Van said, tripping into the room just as I had moments before.
“Oh! Y/N, you know Van?” Kyle said in a less drunk version of Van’s accent; he must be the exchange student his entire friend group knew.
“You know Van?” I slurred back at him. “I just met Van today. He stole my wallet.”
“Noooooo I didn’t!” Van playfully replied in a high pitched voice, swatting my hand in denial.
“So, Y/N, how’s that architecture project coming? You finished your exploded axons and section views yet? That’s been the real kicker for me. I’m still working on building my 3D model as well. So much work.” Kyle was trying to have a legitimate conversation with me, and I felt bad because Van was trying to distract me and I wasn’t in the right mind to be talking about coursework seriously.
“It’s fine… My project is based on simplicity and elegance, and experiential maps, so it’s coming along nicely. It’s all about emotional experiences you can convey in the spaces, that atmosphere, ya know?” I knew I was slurring every word I spoke to him. “I think the final review will be a cinch if I can pull off the rendered views,” I said as Van wrapped his arms around me from the side and started whispering things about art and big words in my ear. Kyle started realizing that we were getting cozy, and so it was then that he decided to break off from the conversation. “So some tosser mixed together a lot of our alcohol and wasted a lot of it, so if you two want another drink, you can have friend privileges and raid the stash of wine in my room. There’s a lot of it that I bought for just this kind of situation. Have at it!” He said with a wave of his hands. “Not that you need anymore,” he muttered.
Of course, Van and I immediately locked hands and ran through the kitchen, through the living room, down the hall and up the stairs to the bedrooms. Van threw open the door to the bathroom by accident and Van’s friend Bondy was heavily making out with a girl who had Bondy’s hat on backwards and was sitting on the bathroom counter. They didn’t even notice we had opened the door and kept on kissing furiously. Van shut it, and we both looked at each other for a moment before erupting into raucous laughter. We almost fell back down the stairs from laughing so hard and clinging onto each other roughly, and people started staring at us wondering what was going on.
The next door we opened was to a bedroom, and we began searching for the wine. We looked on the dressers, in the closets, and in the drawers, like it was a game. I got down on my hands and knees to look under the tiny bed, and Van did the same from the other side of the bed. We were laughing the entire time, and our hands met under the bed while searching for bottles. Van held tight to the hand he brushed up against. Under the tiny bed, he looked at me with those eyes that sparkled even in the dark, and we realized our faces were only a foot apart now. The atmosphere changed. The laughter stopped and we stared at each other, mouths falling open, eyes darting to and from each other’s lips as we realized what we really wanted to do.
“Just what the HELL are you two doing in here?” A guy, not Kyle, but still British, shouted as he walked into the room. Van and I hit our heads on the underside of the bedframe looming above us as he walked in, and we grimaced and grumbled in pain. The guy dragged Van out from underneath the bed by his feet, and Van yelped, “Larry, stop!” In a high pitched voice.
“Mate, we’ve gotta keep you in sight. Straighten up.” Larry turned to me and said, “And as for you, miss, don’t let him drink anything else.”
***
11:00p.m.
We had found the wine in Kyle’s bedroom and we stashed a bottle of champagne and a bottle of red wine behind the fireplace screen for later, whenever that would be. At Larry’s request, we had stopped drinking. He’d even given me his number just in case Van had decided otherwise and needed to be given a talking-to by Larry. And although we were now just tipsy instead of drunk, Van continued the touching. Brushing fingers up and down my arm, holding my hands even when we weren’t walking anywhere.
We both sat close, thighs touching, Van’s arm around me on the little couch someone had dragged from inside the living room to the backyard. Most everyone was inside the house now, waiting around for more alcohol to arrive since Van had mixed up most of the stuff they had before. He told me earlier he slipped Kyle some money to pay for what he mussed up.
Underneath the blue and green lights Kyle had strung up earlier that day, we sat in silence for a while and watched the people inside have conversations and go about their drunkened business.
Van spoke up first, his voice low. “You’ve got less than an hour to go.”
“Mmm?” I murmured, drawn from the quiet by his raspy voice.
“Your wallet.” He replied.
“Yeah? Haven’t checked the time in a while, what with being distracted and all.” I shot him a small smirk.
“Distracted?” Van played like he didn’t know what I meant.
“Oh, ya know, drunk dancing, bumping into Kyle, looking for the wine, et cetera, et cetera.”
“Speaking of Kyle - that was a nice talk you two had. That art stuff, I mean. Don’t know much about it, but I vibed with the idea that emotional experiences have effects on how people perceive things.” He continued as he pulled a pack of cigarettes out of his back pocket and fumbled for a lighter. “Atmosphere means a lot to anyone who’s on the receiving end of a work, whatever that work may be.” He lit the cigarette. “And that simplicity and elegance, right, from seeing the true potential realized, that’s what people look for.”  He blew a puff of smoke to the sky.
Van looked so beautiful in the soft blue-green light the overhead strands cast on his face. I took a finger and traced over the line of his nose, across his lips, and down to his chin. He watched me intently. I traced across his jawline, almost to his earlobe, and down his neck to the collar bone poking out of his shirt. I put my hand down and gave him a small smile.
“In every building I design I take the experiences I’ve had in my own life and I use what I feel to create the aura that people feel when they walk in. There’s only one first impression. It’s got to count.”
“Your first impression was an interesting one, love, how you proper slithered a book out from under my arm today in the library so casually. Real talent there,” Van chuckled.
My eyes almost popped out of my head. “You were awake? Why didn’t you say anything?”
“For the same reason you didn’t try to talk to me! Strange way to meet a person, yeah?” He smiled and took another puff from the cig.
I checked my watch. 11:50p.m.
Larry came over to us and sat down next to Van. “People’re gettin’ antzy, ay? Great party, great vibes. Love the lights.” Boy, Larry talked fast. He lit up a cigarette as well and motioned to the people inside, capturing Van in a banterous conversation about guitars and sets or something. A little left out, I stood up and walked into the house partly to get away from the smoke, and partly to give Van some alone time with Larry. Walking away from Van was physically difficult; his warmth had been so near to me all night that lack of it was uncomfortable. I realized just how chilly the April night had gotten.
I found the bottles of wine behind the fireplace screen and thought about popping the champagne. There wasn’t really a reason to, though. Maybe when I got my wallet back! I chuckled to myself. I meandered around the house, trying to find some other of Van’s friends like Bondy or Benji or Bob to speak to, but they were nowhere to be found.
I circled around back to the living room, about to go outside through the sliding glass doors to the backyard. Arms tightened around my waist just as I was about to pass the threshold, and a voice whispered in my ear, “I believe I have something of yours.” I twist around and there Van is with my wallet in his outstretched hand. I wiggled my hips a little as he handed it over. I smiled and hugged him. “Thank you so much for finally giving this back! Took me forever to get it.”
“You’re welcome, love.” He stood there, a little awkwardly. I didn’t really know what to say. Maybe we were done here. After all, most of the stuff we did involved us being drunk and not particularly normal. Maybe that’s just what Van did at parties.
“Well…. I’ve had such a lovely time tonight…. See you soon, then” I replied. I slowly started to turn around and walk toward the door, a little disappointed that the night was over.
“Y/N, wait! You’re gonna miss the best part!” Van called after me.
I turned back around to face him. “What do you mean? Isn’t the party over at midnight? Like, now?” His actions were confusing me.
He looked at me with an expression I couldn’t place. “The show?” He questioned.
“What show?”
“Catfish and the Bottlemen. Please stay and watch!”
I wanted to stay with him, but I didn’t really want to watch one of the crappy bands that usually played at the university parties here.
“Van, I’ve never really heard of them, and the name sounds a bit odd…. Maybe next time? It’s kind of late…” I was starting to feel funny. He was pressing about this. I looked back up at him, and he looked very disappointed. He turned and briskly walked outside, bolting into the crowd looking a little angry. Or determined?
I headed outside shortly after Van, and he pushed through the small crowd to get to the front of the stage, probably before the band started playing. I shook my head. I took a right and was walking across the yard along the side of the house until I heard someone speak up on the microphone right as I was about to exit the yard.
“Hi everyone, I’m Van from Catfish and the Bottlemen, and this song’s called Kathleen” he said, breathing heavily from the run up to the stage. I stopped in my tracks and slowly pivoted. There he was, on stage! With a guitar! With Bondy and Benji and Bob!
As Van sang the first lines, my mouth was still hanging wide open. I walked back to the small crowd that had gathered in Kyle’s backyard. Out of nowhere, a hand grabbed my arm from the outskirts of the crowd and helped me move toward the front. I twisted my head over my shoulder and realized Larry was the one pushing me up there. As soon as he stopped pushing me, I was right there in the front, and could register what was happening.
His voice was incredible. Raspy when it got louder, and so smooth and effortless at the same time because he sang what he knew with such raw emotion. He was probably waking up everyone in the neighborhood with those pipes, and he didn’t seem embarrassed at all, though he didn’t really need to be. He was the best I’d ever seen live.
***
1:00a.m.
The show had been amazing, nothing like I’d ever seen before. The blue lights beaming down on Van and the boys created an atmosphere so cool and beyond heavenly. Van had made eye contact with me so much during the show, and at one point it was so sensual that I felt a little self-conscious. The last riff of a song called Tyrants was played and Van hopped down off the stage right in front of me, dripping sweat with Larry trying to pat him with a towel. He shooed Larry off and put an arm around my waist, pulling me toward him and pushing our hips together. “How was that for a  first impression?” He asked. He ran his tongue across his lips before he crashed them onto mine in a short, but hot, kiss. Everyone watched and some people even gasped.
“How bout summa that champagne?” He grinned, and brushed his nose up against mine; I just nodded, still in awe of the aura he created and the fact that he just kissed me in it.
Larry had already thought ahead to bring a bottle nearby; he gave it to Van, and it was popped right there. The foam ran into the grass, cork nowhere to be found, and he held it to my lips to drink.
***
?:??a.m.
Stumbling through the streets of Kyle’s neighborhood, Van and I laughed and bantered and slurred our way up against many a tree to kiss each other senseless. We had lost the other boys a while ago on their way to find some fried food. We ran through the alleys of the neighborhood, trying not to hit our then-stashed bottles of wine on anything. My feet were getting tired. Van tried to carry me through the dark city streets, but he was stumbling too and couldn’t get very far. He teetered over a little too far with me in his arms and I dropped the champagne bottle. It shattered piercingly loud on the street, green glass flecking everywhere into a million pieces. They reflected in the wet pools of water left by the downpour earlier. Our eyes met again, and I dropped onto my feet and shouted “Run!”
We bolted down the alleyway and turned the corner just as lights were coming on where we had been seconds before.
After a few minutes of running and huffing and puffing and a few more hot stolen kisses against dimly lit lamp posts, we had arrived at my apartment complex. I fumbled for my keys as Van kissed my neck from behind.
Once inside my apartment, I set everything down and took the bottle of red wine from Van’s hands - the last bottle left from the party - while he looked around my place curiously. I poured us two glasses of the thick red wine.
Van sat down in my desk chair and stared at the piano keyboard. “Do you play?”
“Why else would it be in my apartment?” I gave him a coy smile.
He scooted off the chair to sit on the floor while I took the chair. I started playing some of Pachelbel’s Canon in D, my favorite classical song. Van was enraptured with the way my fingers glided across the keys, hitting every note perfectly. Under the warm yellow lights of my desk, he smiled and set his head against my thigh as I played him many a composition. His eyes glistened, probably as mine did earlier when I watched him have a hand at his own craft.
We sat like that for a while as I played. Van peered up at me through long eyelashes, watching me concentrate on tunes I hadn’t attempted in a while. Chuckling when I hit a very wrong key.
When I had exhausted my repertoire, Van took to looking through my vinyls I set up on a table near the balcony of my tiny studio apartment. I sat at the table, sipping my red wine, listening to him murmur “good record” or “don’t know this one” and the like. I started sketching on some scrap paper. Drawing a mass of green and blue meeting a warm abstraction of yellow and orange. I overlayed some geometric shapes on top of the swirls of color.
Van plopped on top of my bed next to my desk, setting his wine glass on the nightstand. The wine was gone from his glass. I realized he had also thoughtfully corked the bottle and put it on the counter.
I moved to put my glass on the floor next to the piano keyboard, still a little wine left in it. I climbed on the bed next to Van; he sat up. Never breaking eye contact, I slid the same leather jacket I had tried so hard not to come into contact with earlier off his shoulders. He put his hands on either side of my face and kissed me delicately.
He pulled away from me and helped me lay onto the bed next to him. He pulled off his shoes and socks and placed them neatly at the foot of the bed, and then did the same for mine. He climbed back onto the bed, lying on his side, head propped up with one elbow. He reached out and ran one of my cube earrings through his fingers.
“You’re gorgeous, you know.” Once again, it was he who spoke up. I smiled and thanked him quietly. “You’re not so bad yourself,” I said. After a pause, I kept on: “I had a really great time tonight. You’re lovely. The more time I’ve spent with you the more I’ve realized I’ve never had someone get on with me so well. It just worked today.” Van’s subsequent lean-in for a long, passionate kiss was his answer to that.
When we broke the kiss for air, I sat up. “Hold on. I have to do something before I forget.” He stared at me as I got up, sleepily walked over to my desk, and sat down. I opened the first drawer of my old worn desk next to the piano we just played together, grabbing my black leather journal, not unlike Van’s jacket. I picked up the glass of wine from the floor and set it next to the journal. I grabbed a pen from this old ceramic cup I made forever ago, and began to write this epic. I drained the glass of wine.
And here we are.
You look up at Van, who’s been patiently waiting for you to finish writing. He didn’t ask questions. He probably does the same thing when he gets song ideas. He’s hunched over something on the other side of the bed, looking perfectly at ease. You get up from your desk, and peel off your jeans. Van takes this as a cue to return his attention to you, nevermind whatever he was doing before. He watches you as you return the cube earrings to your jewelry box and brush out your hair. His eyes ask permission that he can strip down to his own makeshift pajamas. You nod ever so slightly and walk into the bathroom. You take off your bra and put on a bigger, warm black t-shirt over your skin. You take off the little bit of makeup you had on, brush your teeth and look at yourself in the mirror, loving how mussed your hair looks from staying out so late. When you return to the main room, Van is already under the silky sheets and most of his clothes are strewn across the floor.
You climb under too, and love the feel of your skin on his. He wraps his arms around you and the both of you drift off into a fulfilling sleep.
****
The piercing light of the sun through the windows blinded you at an ungodly hour. A voice said, “go back to sleep, love,” and drew the curtains. The voice left to have a smoke on the tiny balcony.
****
You awaken to the side of the bed being much too cold for your liking. The night before is a blur; you remember some things… you remember a boy…. He was in a band… You may have slept with him. You stand up from the bed, body aching from a hangover. You sit at your desk and start to read the journal at the open page.
Memory refreshed, you stand to make yourself some breakfast. You’re a little surprised; Van left no note. You wonder if he was just in it for last night only. He didn’t seem like the type to do that, but at least you’re glad you didn’t do anything but kiss him.
Breakfast was delicious - eggs and avocado salt and peppered on toast, and a heaping bowl of fruit.
You sat back on the bed with a full stomach, contemplating everything. At last, you decided that if he wanted to leave and be done with it, then so be it. No chance in chasing someone who doesn’t want to be committed. You’re disappointed, but at least he didn’t bail later when you were more emotionally invested. Although he spent the night with you. Played a show and wanted you to stay. Looked through your records. And played piano with you. And ran through the alleyways wasted, kissing you dirty up against light posts like you’ve never been kissed before. Sigh.
You open the El Croquis book that was on the nightstand and start flipping through the beautiful photos of built projects, reveling in the precisions of the plans and the ways the sites were mapped. You came across some wild projects that would probably influence your later work. They had everything you wanted in a project, all that stuff you said to Van last night.
You sit there flipping through the glossy pages for more than an hour, reading dissertations and examining the plans. This was one of the best journals that El Croquis had ever released. You were saddened as you made it to the end of the journal; that same feeling you get when you want to finish a book as quickly as possible because it gets so good, but then you’re sad when there’s no story left.
You flip to the last page, and gasp.
Taped over the back inside binding is the sketch you made last night, of the green and blue and yellow with the shapes overlayed. New lines inside the shapes denoted pockets of rooms, and new thicker lines showed boundaries of places, and soon you realize the sketch had been made into a rudimentary version of Kyle’s house, and parts of his neighborhood you got lost in, and your apartment. Van had studied the El Croquis to produce a mapping of your journey together while you had written about the same journey; your roles had reversed. Scrawled above what you both had drawn, he wrote simply, “El Croquis forgot one.”
You closed the book, smile beaming, and you hopped off the bed, walked around it, and your foot hit something solid. You realized a little something was peeking out from under the bed skirt…. Van’s phone. How ironic.
Immediately, you dial Larry’s number.
“Hello? Y/N?” a confused Larry answers. You can hear Van speaking in the background.
“Hi Larry. Could you hand me over to Van real quick?” You say in a chipper voice.
“Yeah, sure. One second.”
The phone crackles as it’s being handed from person to person until it reaches Van.
“Heeello?”
“I believe I have something of yours.”

(She’s back… after an unforeseen hiatus).
Introduction
Good morning, afternoon or evening to those who stumble upon this, like most I would like to find a partner to write long-term. At the moment I don’t have many, and wouldn’t mind at least two to three more. I should probably say a bit about myself, I am twenty-four years old and have been writing about 08 years +. I was a member of Quizilla, where I used to search for partners back in the day. I tend to lurk on other roleplay oriented sites such as RP.Me, and Tumblr from time to time. Below, I will list my rules, current cravings, full roleplay list and some last minute notes. If you see something that catches your eye please do contact me through one of the contact mediums I’ve listed; thank you.
Note: So, as mentioned above I had to take an unforeseen hiatus due to a number of things. (School and health being the two main contributors). However, I am back after a well-needed rest and ready to write again. As of today’s date I have reached out to everyone with whom I was speaking with and sent out replies. If we were speaking a while back (forgive me for disappearing), and you haven’t heard back from me, I’d love to get back in contact with you and begin where we left off. ❤
Types of Roleplay
-
Basic: Contact me with what fandom(s) you’re interested in, we’ll make a mutual decision on the choice, before exchanging oc information and discussing plots. The format is what we’re all used to: portraying our oc’s, each other’s love interest(s) and side characters.
Doubles: More or less the same as above, except if there is more than one thing you’d like to do  and are up for doing more than roleplay, than we can. I will probably only accept 2-3 per person, due to time management.
Split: The format is similar to the basic formula, we both choose one fandom of our respective sides. Then, exchange oc information, love interests and plots.
Split 2.5: This is similar to the former, but different than the ones before it. Normally, a split roleplay is done where we choose two separate fandoms; but I can make an exception for a basic format if that is what you wish. Now, here is where it’s different after we choose our respective fandoms, along with our oc information we will include a big or small write up of a plot for our character and their love interest(s). Now, I will give my partner full-rein in regards to what kind of plot they want. Want a storyline filled with drama and mayhem? Go for it. Want a reverse harem storyline with four characters vying for your character’s heart? Fine with me. This is your opportunity to play out any kind of headcanons and storylines you wish. I only ask for nothing that violates my rules or limits, otherwise sky’s the limit. I may accept 2-3 per person. If you need help with a storyline, let me know.
Rules and Regulations
Length: Normally, I will write one to two paragraphs on both sides. However, that is not my limit for I can write anywhere between one to five paragraphs per sides. Length for a single paragraph can range anywhere between 200-500+ words, whereas each individual side usually equates anywhere from 400-800+ words. I like to consider myself a paragraph|multi-paragraph writer, although I know a lot of people are converting to novella writers, I can accommodate to a novella partner just beware that it will take me longer to reply to you as opposed to someone else. This is due to how much time and effort that goes into novella responses. I am the type of person who likes to take the time to construct a quality response, rather than rush and send someone a response for the sake of replying. Which is why I ask, please give me time to write your response.
Format: I can write in either first or third person, despite preferring first because I can connect with my character more; I will do whatever my partner feels more comfortable with and if that’s second so be it. Also, don’t forget that roles between the two of us should follow accordingly; I play my OC, your love interest(s) and additional side characters. While you play your OC, my love interest(s) and additional side characters.
Love Interests, Mary Sues and Spotlight: I’m lenient when it comes to love interests, as I allow more than one suitor for our characters because love triangles make the story more interesting. However, I would ask that if we just so happen to have the same choice(s) for a love interest that we don’t fight about it; instead try to sort things out. I’ve literally had someone threaten me, simply because I liked the same person as them (I’m not kidding). Second, I’m not an extremist when it comes to characters; meaning I won’t knit pick about every little thing. All I ask is no Mary-Sues and no hogging the spotlight; this is a storyline created between the two us. Let’s share it please.
Spelling and Grammar:There are a lot of people who tend to knit pick about this; but rest assured I will not. All I ask is that you have a decent grasp on both spelling and grammar. Do this and we’ll get along fine; this is something that I can and will promise you.
Manners and Etiquette: This should be common knowledge, but all I ask is that during our time writing together that you treat me with respect and courtesy; I will return the gesture as it is only right. I’d like us to get along, I would hate for a disagreement to ensure and there was bad blood between us due to something frivolous.
Patience and Commitment: I am a full-time student, attending college and leave for school early in the morning and return home later in the afternoon; I am usually quite tired when I return home, but I try to reply to my partners as frequent as possible. However there are times, unfortunately when I cannot reply when I’d like due to an abundant amount of assignments, health issues which can lead to me becoming sick or an emergency at home. I try to inform my partners of these occurrences, but if you don’t hear from me in two to three weeks time don’t be afraid to send me a message and ask me about it. What I won’t accept, is being spammed every five seconds with the same message; again and again because I’m not replying like you’d like me to. I do my best to get to you all, roleplay is supposed to be fun and enjoyable; an escape from reality for both of us. It shouldn’t have to feel like a job. I will do the same for you because I understand everyone here has different lives and schedules to attend to; but please don’t ditch me half-way through the roleplay. If you need to take a break or something; then please tell me. I don’t bite- I’ll understand.
Limits:Tell me your limits when sending a request, as the last thing I’d want is to make you uncomfortable. My limits consist of the following; malexmale/femalexfemale/incest/pedophilia/bestiality. This is where my limits stand, these may or may not change depending on future roleplays; however if you’re unsure about something please don’t hesitate to ask me. Now onto what I will do, I am open to mature themes within the roleplays; I actually encourage them. That includes; cursing, violence, blood, smut, alcohol and lemons. However, I would like to keep the language and lemons to a certain level, meaning no dropping ‘F’ bombs every five seconds and no roleplays dedicated to sexual activities and sexual activities alone. No, there is more to a roleplay than that and I will not engage in such.
Canon, Crossover, AU: I can do strictly canon roleplays or an alternate universe roleplay. Alternate Universes can range from ‘what if’ situations, different settings and scenarios. If you have an idea let me know, or we can brainstorm ideas together; I also have a list of AU prompts so let me know if you’d like to take a look at it. I am also crossover friendly
Location: I can write through email, instant messenger (yahoo, aol, msn), Skype, Kik or Tumblr.
OOC Chit-Chat: I’d like to chat on the sidelines with my partners, as it allows the two of us to get to know each other; thus making things less awkward for the both of us. Plus, I like to make friends with my partners and would enjoy the extra person to converse with.

Final Notes
★Respect my limits and I’ll respect yours.
★This list will be updated periodically.
★Please acquaint yourself with my rules before messaging me. Failure to comply with them or in the instance of repeat offenses will result in the termination of the roleplay.
★Love interests are written in order of preference. If there is only one listed then that’s the only one and I won’t change it.
★Listed above are the fandoms I would be interested in writing for, with them are characters who I wished played against my OC. In return, I will play a character opposite your own OC.
★Please try to have at least two choices when contacting me. I will be thrilled if you have more than that.
★Seriously, don’t contact me if you’re going to ditch. I’m tired of having someone contact me, I get excited and then get dropped. It’s even worse when I write a starter or reply that goes unanswered. If you haven’t heard from me in two to three weeks time send a follow-up  message. I cannot stress this enough. Odds are I didn’t receive your message, my own message has gone astray or something simply came up. Either way I will always get replies out to my partners.
★Be prepared to plot.
★Split roleplays are an option
★Double roleplays are an option
★Plot Candies: Fandoms, Canon, Real world meets the Fandom world(aka: Characters from a fandom transported to the real world or vice versa),  Action, Adventure, Superhero fiction, Crime, Fantasy, Supernatural, Urban Fantasy, Dark Fantasy,  Epic/High Fantasy, Magical Girl, Alternate Universe, Horror, Mystery, Romance, Slice of Life, Thriller, Psychological, Drama, Mythology, Fiction, Tragedy, Time Travel, What-If (prompts),Married-Life, Pregnancy, Family, Crossovers, Reverse Harem,
★ Upon contacting me please make sure to do the following. First, I believe that first impressions matter and therefore would appreciate if you could please introduce yourself to me. I find when people contact me with simply “Want to RP” or “RP?” to be very off putting and therefore leave me with no desire to return the message. Second, please include the following information: what you’re interested in writing for, any limits that you may or may not have (this one is important because I know everyone is different) and what type of roleplay you’re interested doing. Lastly, it would be nice if you could include any ideas you may have. If you don’t have any that’s okay, if you do don’t be shy to share. Thanks. ❤

[ Fandom ] Roleplay Search || 02.10.17

Thanks. ❤

Top Ten Movies of 2016
This is my thirteen (going on 30) year of doing a list of my top ten (Eleven) movies of the year.  You should make a comment of some kind! And if you don’t see your favorite film, tell me. Enjoy Movies.
10. Love & Friendship: Whit Stillman + Jane Austin = A funny and wonderful film that any Jane Austin fan should see right away.  Love & Friendship is pure breezy wit from beginning to end, and with so many verbal punch lines that you won’t be able to catch every joke in one viewing.  Kate Beckinsale proves again that she is way more than the Underworld movies.  And Tom Bennett is an actor to keep an eye on since he steals every scene he is in.  Film Fact: Kate Beckinsale's first theatrical release in almost four years.
9. Don’t Breathe: Fede Alvarez + home invasion = A grind house thriller ride that never lets up. Fede Alvarez has done it again after his well done remake of Evil Dead.  Alvarez exploits the sensory impairment of his villain for one suspenseful set piece after another, demonstrating a strong command of his craft while investing the mayhem with some sly subtext, both economic and moral. Mostly, though, Don’t Breathe is an exercise in pure, sustained intensity that never lets up until the final frames. A must see for any one that loves thrillers. Film Fact: Stephen Lang wore contact lenses that greatly restricted his vision, particularly in low light. The other actors, in the scene taking place in the dark, wore lenses that made them look like they had dilated pupils but also greatly restricted their vision.
8. Arrival:  Denis Villeneuve (Sicario) + Aliens = One of best films of the off the year that appeals to the intellect just as strongly as it appeals to the heart. In a film that explores language and characters, it allows the viewer to experience the depth and wonders of what language means, what it’s for, and what it can do. Also, how we communicate alters our perceptions. I have been enjoying this trend of recent years of smart science fiction and I am really excited to see what Denis Villeneuve does with the new Blade Runner. (I wrote almost the same line last year for Sicario.)  Film Fact: Director Denis Villeneuve and screenwriter Eric Heisserer created a fully functioning, visual, alien language. Heisserer, Vermette and their teams managed to create a "logogram bible," which included over a hundred different completely operative logo-grams, seventy-one of which are actually featured in the movie.
7. Deadpool/ Captain America: Civil War: Ryan Reynolds + Rated R Superhero film = Gold. And Superheroes fighting each other + Actually a good Spiderman = Nerd dreams.  I am happy that Ryan Reynolds finally got to be the correct version of Deadpool and got to do the film correctly.  Deadpool was a hilarious, crass, and ironic film that did something certain audiences have been waiting for, something different and that is why its highest grossing R-rated movie of all time. I am hoping Logan follows this trend of something different.  Film Fact: 20th Century Fox refused to pay the writers of the film, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, for onset input, Ryan Reynolds paid out of his own pocket for them to be onset to look over the film. While Captain America: Civil War had phenomenal action sequences and good character development, it also redeemed the not fantastic Avengers: Age of Ultron and cleansed the palette for the next Spider-Man movie. I can actually say that I am excited for the next Spider-Man movie thanks to this movie.  I can also say this was the essence of a classic Marvel comic come to life: the melodramatic angst, the team-ups and the in-fighting between characters. Everything my teenage self would have wanted.  Film Fact: The day before filming a fight scene with Robert Downey Jr., Sebastian Stan sent him a video of himself doing intense bicep curls in front of the decapitated head of an Iron Man suit. He attached the message, ‘Looking forward to our scene tomorrow Robert.’
6. Moonlight: Alex R. Hibbert + Ashton Sanders + Trevante Rhodes = Three amazing actors playing one character through many stages of his life. Moonlight is a stunning piece of filmmaking that is beautiful shot. Barry Jenkins used a shoestring budget to create a heart warming story of a boy growing, learning and finally accepting just who he is. There is so much I want to say about this film but I rather it is a surprise when you see it.  I can say that Mahershala Ali is amazing in it too and that he deserves an Oscar for this role.  Film Fact: When Juan teaches Little how to swim, Mahershala Ali is really teaching Alex R. Hibbert how to swim. When production started, Hibbert did not know how to swim.
5. Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping: The Lonely Island + Mockumentarie = Box office failer, but Soon to be Cult classic (I hope).  I have to say I enjoyed every second of this movie.  While this movie has its silly moments that I enjoyed, I do feel it digs deep into the absurdities of not just the music business, but the nature of the music documentary. Couple that with genuinely great songs like “Equal Rights”, “Finest Girl (Bin Laden Song)”, and “Incredible Thoughts” and I feel like it is absolutely worthy of standing alongside other faux music docs like A Mighty Wind or This Is Spinal Tap. This is a movie I will be watching over and over again and finding new things to laugh about every time.  And after writing this, all I want to do is stop writing and go watch it again.  Film Fact: A small clip from a Lonely Island video "Kablamo" is seen in the movie.
4. Midnight Special: Jeff Nichols + Michael Shannon = Another Fantastic movie on my top ten list.  Jeff Nichols is on a string of fantastic movies. He is the Director of the fantastic film Mud that was on my top ten list last year.  He also directed another film getting a lot of hype this year, Loving. In the middle of those two films he decided to make a somewhat-Spielbergian sci-fi/adventure that manages to be both grounded and awe-inspiring. And he did what he always has done and hired the wonderful Michael Shannon to be in the movie, this time giving him a bigger role. Jeff Nichols also surrounded Michael Shannon with other great actors: Kirsten Dunst, Joel Edgerton, Adam Driver, Sam Shepard and young Jaeden Lieberher. This all together makes Midnight Special a lively and riveting movie that trusting its audience in a way few movies of this scope dare to be anymore. Its gets my award for best sci-fi of the year and continues the trend of smart science fiction movies. Film Fact: Jeff Nichols wrote the film as a reflection on becoming a father.
3. Manchester by the Sea: Kenneth Lonergan + Casey Affleck + Michelle Williams = Cryfest.   I have to start out that you will cry in this movie...well, at least I did.  Don’t let that scare you away from the wonderful film because while this movie is a sad movie, it’s also hilarious and sweet and frustrating movie.  The movie is just about Life, how messy and strange and sometimes incomprehensible it can be.  Kenneth Lonergan vision of human experience and the unknowability of the human heart is shown through the fantastic actors in the film.  A cast that includes Casey Affleck, Michelle Williams, Kyle Chandler (This man can do know wrong), Gretchen Mol, Matthew Broderick and a brilliant discovery Lucas Hedges.  One scene with Michelle Williams and Casey Affleck has me crying just thinking about it.  Go See it. Film Fact: According to an interview with Kenneth Lonergan on DP/30, the idea for the film didn't originate with him - the main core of a character going back home to take care of a family member after a death was pitched to Lonergan by Matt Damon and John Krasinski as a script that Lonergan would write and for Damon to direct. But due to scheduling conflicts with The Martian, Damon couldn't direct the film or star in it (he suggested Casey Affleck to star in the film.) Lonergan was then given free rein as a writer-director for the project, with Damon and Krasinski as producer.
2. Hunt for the Wilderpeople: Taika Waititi + New Zealand = A fun and beautiful film.  In this year of hell and death, we are lucky that Taika Waititi was there to give us this cheerful film that would require a strong effort to actually dislike it. After directing the fantastic What We Do in the Shadows, Waititi turned his attention to a heart-warming pre-teen adventure that would have felt right at home in the 1980s alongside The Goonies and Stand By Me. Julian Dennison and Sam Neill play off each other so well, that every scene with them is a delight.  The film also has beautiful shots of New Zealand forests. If you haven’t seen it, you are in for a real treat.  Film Fact: The Toyota that main characters use is called Crumpy, in reference to Barry Crump, the author of the book the screenplay was based on. An identical vehicle was driven by Barry Crump in a long running series of Toyota commercials in New Zealand, where Barry played a bushman taking a city slicker named Scotty for a drive through the Bush. Scotty was played by Lloyd Scott, who appears in this film as "Tourist".
1. Hell or High Water: Taylor Sheridan + Western = Best film of the year.  First thing that drew me into this film was the dialog.  Taylor Sheridan has shown he is a brilliant screenwriter after doing this film and last year’s Sicario. (This movie keeps popping up on this list.)  Sheridan has written a witty screenplay here that captures a bank-robbing cowboy movie perfectly while having a scathing commentary on the financial health of the country.  The film is a perfect balance of entertaining and having something say about the state of things.  The second item that helped this film is the stunning performances from Jeff Bridges, Ben Foster, Chris Pine and Gil Birmingham.  I would say the best role Chris Pine has ever played.  Jeff Bridges does a perfect job of being likeable and racist. And Ben Foster can do no wrong.  Then there is David Mackenzie directing.  He does a perfect job of showing a small buddy film but also displaying the wide open space of Texas.  I loved every inch of this movie.  Film Fact: The phrase "come hell or high water" typically means "do whatever needs to be done, no matter the circumstances". It also refers to the "hell or high water clause" in a contract, usually a lease, which states that the payments must continue regardless of any difficulties the paying party may encounter. Both definitions apply to different parts of the plot in this movie.

[Exclusive] Interview With MAYHEM Director Joe Lynch
New Post has been published on https://nofspodcast.com/exclusive-interview-with-mayhem-director-joe-lynch/
[Exclusive] Interview With MAYHEM Director Joe Lynch
Director Joe Lynch wears the epithet “deranged” like a badge of honor. His newest movie Mayhem is evidence of that, showing what it would look like if all your workplace murder fantasies came to life.
Mayhem has been screened at many film festivals like SXSW and Fantasia, and recently, the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival awarded Steven Yeun for Best Actor for his lead role in the film. If that’s not enough to convince you about how good this movie is, it’s also sitting at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes (at the time of this being published).
I was able to meet Joe Lynch in person while working for Fantasia last summer, so it was great to reconnect with him over the phone last week. The thing with Joe is that he always has a lot to say and he will never give you a single-sentence answer, which explains why he holds the record for the second-longest Q&A in Fantasia history (after Kevin Smith). We talked about shitty office jobs, filming Mayhem overseas and the possibility of a third season for Holliston (Joe and Adam Green’s sitcom. It’s like Big Bang Theory, but with horror nerds).
youtube
Chris Aitkens for Nightmare on Film Street: What has your experience been for the festival run of Mayhem?
Joe Lynch: Honestly, it’s been an amazing adventure. Every filmmaker at some point in their life always hopes and dreams to have that movie where all of the hard work, all the passion, all the blood, sweat and tears pays off in this interesting way where you get to share your art with these different people who come to movies, not just as a way to hook up with their significant other or as a time waster, but they love movies, they’re passionate about movies and they deliberately come to these festivals to discover new things or see old things again.
It’s a great community and to have a film that allows you to travel all over the world, over decisions that you made in a country that is not your own, it’s surreal! I think it’s completely bonkers. What other job allows you to do that? There’s not too many positions that allow you to do something you truly love that is something that can be consumed by anybody. It’s not like if you’re traveling because of business and you have all these different investors all over the country. Everybody loves movies! It’s the sort of thing you can share with practically anybody! And the fact that you can go to different parts of the world and meet people and filmmakers you admire and new friends.
Ever since March, I’ve been on this surreal trip, and I’m kind of sad that it’s coming to a close now with the theatrical release hitting, but it’s been a wild ride!
NOFS: Are you confident for the theatrical release in November?
JL: Any filmmaker is smoking crack if they say that they are confident in a release these days. It’s a fallacy that you can predict how a movie will do. Even with tracking on big movies, you never know. Obviously with It, no one saw that one coming and how that one really exploded. Or Get Out. There are movies that just sneak up on the zeitgeist and scream “gotcha!” But for the most part, it’s a crap shoot.
I’m as confident as I can be in knowing that I’ve made a movie that has been able to, in a shrewd sense, test-screen about 13 or 14 times with some of the best audiences in the world, and worst, but in the best sort of way where they’re very scrutinous. I’ve been able to test this movie out all over the world for the past eight or nine months, and not to be boastful, but I’m so proud that it’s actually connected to people, because I usually make movies that are very divisive, intentionally and unintentionally.
For once, this movie that is very personal to me, that was my personal statement about the state of my world and how I see the world, has resonated with audiences all over the world in places I never would have expected. It gives me more confidence than I’ve ever had with another movie and knowing how many people are huge fans of Steven [Yeun] and who are going to be big fans of Samara Weaving—very soon if not already— having that kind of chemistry, that magic in a bottle from them alone would already make me confident. In most cases, there’s been plenty of times where we’ve all met filmmakers, who you can tell when they say “(insincerely) yeah…this movie is great.” They’re on the junket route and they can’t say “I’m sorry, I just took this as a gig” or “there was a lot of compromise and I’m just doing this because the studio told me.” You’re not allowed to say that. You have to say “she was a dream” and “he was awesome to work with.” Sometimes, it’s fucking lies! I get it, it’s studio spin, or common spin that we’re all used to, we’re not allowed to be completely honest, but here I’ve been lucky where I haven’t had to do that all, and it’s been very refreshing. I can sit there and I can talk about the movie, like at that Q&A at Fantasia, people kept asking me questions!
Part of the reason I come to film festivals is I don’t get a chance to get out much. That’s what I crave. That’s part of why I love movies, it’s because it sparks amazing conversations from everybody. And hopefully, it will resonate with people who don’t get a chance to go to film festivals. And if you can’t see it in theatres, thank god that there’s iTunes and VOD, because with a lot of movies these days, that’s where most of the money is coming from. It’s a win-win situation for me in that regard.
I wish it was going to be in more cities and I wish it was a screening release with all the Marvel marketing that you can possibly have—or some of that A24 marketing too, fuck it, they’re great with their marketing—but getting out there and doing the festivals and getting the amazing responses we’ve had online, where real people are talking about it, that’s how I get buzz about a movie. It’s not marketing that’s being shoved down your throat, it’s my friend saying “dude, have you seen Brawl in Cell Block 99? That movie’s fucking amazing!” I’d rather take opinions from friends and people I’ve never met before than a commercial or an online promo. That’s what we’re striving for, to get the word out. We realize that it’s out there and hopefully there’s a lot of Walking Dead fans who want to see Glenn alive again!
NOFS: I feel a lot of people can relate to the movie because they maybe have worked a job similar to that of Steven Yeun’s character in the movie. I know you can somewhat relate to the story. Would you mind telling me a story of Joe Lynch in corporate hell?
JL: I was doing this project for this one corporate entity that’s an entertainment company but they’re owned by a company that’s owned by a company that’s owned by a company. We really weren’t working for this network, we were really working for the corporate conglomerate that owns the network. And this wasn’t how the network was at first, it was independently owned, but then it got eaten up by one conglomerate that got eaten up by another conglomerate. And in those turnarounds, there was a re-identifying: at first it was video game network. Then it was a modern-male socially-aware network. Now, we don’t quite know what it is.
But I was brought in to do this anthology project, and I got to bring in all these other filmmakers to help with this project. I thought it was so cool and such a great idea. I was there to help the filmmakers make very particular videos that were going to be used for the website to promote it. And one of the things I love about short films is that they’re usually low-stakes. I don’t have to talk to too many people and I get final cut because there’s not a lot involved and there’s not a lot of money that you have to worry about. And the thing is, we didn’t have a lot of money for this either, but I know how to make a short with 59 cents and a roll of duct tape, so I can make it three times. I like that challenge.
What I quickly realized though—and this is not the fault of my superiors, but it was their superiors—was that every single creative decision that the filmmakers made had to be approved. When it came to the creative side, from the initial script to how they budgeted everything to how it was edited and how it was delivered, it literally took 20 emails with every creative decision. Essentially, I had to deal with 120 emails everyday to find out if someone liked this color on this car instead of this other color. It was ridiculous. I know it’s not something that crazy, but I just remember feeling so emotionally dead about the experience, then having these three amazing filmmakers deal with that also. I tried to protect them from most of the bullshit, which made it even more difficult, because they only knew the half of it.
It was so creatively stifling that when I saw that my title was “creative executive producer,” I just wanted to cross it out because I didn’t feel I was able to be creative whatsoever. I expected it to be something I would be really proud of, but it just ended up being a bust. I really don’t work well in corporate space, I can do it if I have to, just to make ends meet. They hire you to be creative, yet they second-guess you and all they do is use passive aggression, when you really want them to be honest.
That’s what Mayhem is all about, it’s a battle against passive aggression. Everybody wants to discuss when they should just say no and just say that they don’t like this! Why do we have to side-bar everything? Why do we have to have another meeting? Because people’s voices might get raised? Someone’s feelings might get hurt? No one wants to get anyone’s feelings hurt anymore because someone will sue. That’s the problem with the corporate world. It’s this serpent eating its tail, because no one can be honest and everyone will sue. It’s such a deadening situation where no one can be their true selves. And part of directing is being able to be yourself, it’s your vision, it’s your voice!
NOFS: How much creative freedom were you allowed with Mayhem?
JL: I had amazing producers who trusted me, like the fools that they are! (I like to say that sarcastically). From the beginning, I was very clear with the particular tone I was going for. I knew that I needed sugar to make the medicine go down, so there had to be a lot of humor. I had to convey that to the actors, the producers, everybody, but once we were on the same page, there wasn’t a lot of conflict with that.
That fueled it because I knew exactly what I wanted. We didn’t have time to compromise. And because I worked that job, I was able to say “I know this world. This is exactly how it would be. There’s a reason why these particular people are in this particular part of the office at this particular time of day.” Little dumb details like that I feel that anybody who has worked an office job before would agree and relate.
And it’s funny, I got asked at a festival recently if there will be a director’s cut. But the movie IS my director’s cut. Whatever notes I received, I agreed with. And whatever notes I pushed back on, I had a very clear reason why. The biggest crossroad in the editing was that Samara would give me her unabashed id version in a take and then for safety, would do a take where she was more subdued. So when Josh Ethier and I were editing, Josh suggested we do a version where she doesn’t seem so crazy. And I remember one producer saying “does she have to be so crazy here?” It was a balancing act. We had to make sure that her crazy moments were tempered with the pacing of the movie. That’s totally a testament to Samara and she fucking owned it!
For the version that’s out there, I see all the flaws and I see all the mistakes, but I’m still proud of it and it could not have turned out better, especially for the conditions that we had to shoot it under.
NOFS: Why is it that you had to go to Serbia to film?
JL: As any filmmaker knows, money is time and time is money. There’s a reason why there’s a common adage: “make your day.” It’s a quote that every director knows all too well and it gives chills down their spine because most of the time, you can’t go overtime because it costs a lot of money. The amount of days you have to make a movie can dictate your ultimate quality.
I knew this movie needed as much time as possible, especially with the action and the gags, and I wanted to give the actors enough time to get into their characters. When you make a movie in 15 days—and I’ve been there before—it is rough! So when we got the greenlight and we had a particular amount of money—not enough that I wanted, but enough to work with—we were given options to where we can shoot.
I had a great line producer called Buddy Enright who’s been around forever and he’s the man when it comes to making sure a movie is maximised economically, yet it remains as creative as possible. So we had to find a place that would give us the most amount of days to shoot. We went first to Pittsburgh and they said 15 days. Then we went to New Orleans and they said 17 days. Then we tried Vancouver and they said 18 days. But it was not enough time.
But I had shot my last film, Everly in Serbia, mainly because of the tax break and the time as well. And I had a good time there, it was a very challenging movie, but it wasn’t because of the location. The crews were great and it worked out very well, even though it was half-way around the world, which sucked because I was away from family. So Buddy called the production company in Serbia and talked to the head of production who was on Everly as well. And they said we needed to come back because they had all this fake blood leftover, so we can use it to make Mayhem. And they offered us 25 days. That made all the difference.
So I would miss my family for four to six months, but I would end up with a better product, with better quality across the board, with better actors. What was great is that I worked with the same people I worked with on Everly, so it was kind of like coming home to family and friends. A lot of those people ended up being even bigger collaborators this time around; my art director for Everly ended up being the production designer on this one. I also got to bring back Steve Gainer (for cinematography) who everybody loves, he was just the life of the party. It was like going to Cheers, where he was Norm! We had a lot of goodwill already and we all got along great, I could not have done the movie without them.
NOFS: I want to switch gears a bit, because I’ve recently been watching Holliston. I saw the Kane Hodder documentary and he mentioned his cameo in Holliston and I recognized you in the clips.
JL: By the way, how great is that documentary? I loved it, it made me tear up about four or five times. He’s had a rough life. Anyway, you were saying?
NOFS: I just wanted to ask if Holliston was truly representative of the struggle as a horror director?
JL: Honestly, I think it’s pretty light considering that since Holliston, the business has changed exponentially since 2013. We’ve been talking about doing a third season forever, and we’re actually closer than ever. And man, the shit we’re going to be able to skewer this time around: between streaming and piracy, and doing TV instead of movies because no one is going to the movies anymore, and the fact that movies are all about foreign sales. And for us—I can’t really speak for Adam [Green] personally but I can speak for myself—it’s been incredibly challenging.
Why do you think I had to do the corporate gig? The day of free development deals have ended. And no one wants feature directors to do TV because everyone thinks they take too long, and that’s not true. I’ve done enough indie films with a gun to my head to know that I got to make my day. But it’s getting tougher than ever to get TV gigs because everybody wants them. There’s less money out there and less worthwhile projects.
I think that Holliston is definitely going to come back, and we’re going to have a lot to cover, especially Adam who has gone through a lot of emotional stuff over the years, between Dave Brockie dying, being in a divorce and finding love again, and the struggles on his end from doing movies. He shot the show before the Movie Crypt [Adam and Joe’s podcast] was even a thing! It’s such a big part of our lives now, I love doing it, but it takes a lot of work and it takes a lot of time away from my family. There’s been a lot that’s happened since season two, and it’s funny, my wife put on an episode a couple weeks ago and she said “I don’t think I’ve seen all of season two.” And I remember thinking that both of us have matured in a lot of ways since the last time we were together on that set. I’m really excited where it’s going to go because it’s going to really reflect the times now, especially where we are. Just to be on that set again with that cast is going to be amazing.  It’s going to be very special.
NOFS: I was surprised with the rockstars that were involved with Holliston; you had Dee Snider and Oderus Urungus. Is there a rockstar you would like to work with in the future?
JL: I know he might be too busy, but I would love to get Dave Grohl, because I know he’s funny, from what I saw in Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny. The guy’s got comedy chops. I’ve been a fan of him since the early Nirvana days and later on with the Foo Fighters. Who else? Anybody from KISS would be fucking rad. Lemmy [Kilmister] was going to do Holliston at one point in the second season, but we couldn’t get him at the time. There’s tons of possibilities, hopefully everyone stays alive long enough.
NOFS: Any last comments?
JL: Please, if you love movies, if you love supporting indie cinema, the best thing you can do is go out on November 10th—at least in the States—and see Mayhem in the theatre. I know it’s not playing in a lot of theaters, but if you do live near one of those cities, please go see it. If you don’t, get it on VOD and iTunes, and tell your friends.
This is a movie that you’re allowed to have a blast with on a Friday night and it will totally make your Monday more manageable. Trust me. Don’t be a dick, don’t steal it. If this movie does okay financially, it’s going to help the artists who made it be able to tell more stories and do more movies. The more that you pirate, the more that you’re destroying people’s lives. I hate to say it, but it’s true; my family and I have been affected by piracy. I’ve had employees in movie theaters say “we pirate shit off the internet all the time, and we’ve seen statistically that it doesn’t effect anybody.” Bullshit. In a hive situation where everyone is thinking that and pirating, no one’s going out to see these movies and it’s hurting the industry.  Please do your part. Do it for Steven, do it for me, do it for my goddamn kids! I
ndie cinema doesn’t have the benefit of having all the marketing money in the world. All the good movies—and bad movies—that we saw when we were kids, it was a bit of a gamble, you didn’t know if the movie would be good or not, but that was part of the adventure! Now everyone is so scared to waste their time and waste their money, they think they can pirate first then buy later, but no one ever does that. Take a chance. I’m really proud of the movie, everyone who worked their ass off on this movie is proud of it. The best thing you can do is push a button that says buy or rent. That is a vote of confidence that you want to see more movies like this. I think you’ll dig it.
Mayhem will be available in select theaters, VOD and Digital HD on November 10th.

This is our third annual trip to Pulley Ridge on board the Yankee Capts. As always, it was a blast to be fishing with great fishermen from our fishing forum communities. It is always great to put a face to screen names and it’s always great to hear how they fish in their areas. The exchange of ideas and knowledge is invaluable on these trips. Our trip this year was a grind like we haven’t seen before, but the captain was able to pull a rabbit out of the hat. He put us on top of quality fish and then found some fish that were chewing so we were able to catch and put fish in everyone’s cooler.
What a start! I got to the docks on 3 cylinders making me show up later than I ever would have. When I got there the Captain asked me if we were all at the dock so we could leave earlier and as I was told we were, with the exception of 3 people. I started contacting all the missing fishermen. One was by the Navy base, Victor (alias Martin and 5 other names including mutton slayer of this trip) was late, told me I am 20 minutes away but showed up an hour later, and Andre showed up as we were waiting on Victor. I counted the 19 we were supposed to have and we left the dock. As we were out on the water and on the channel bound to the fishing grounds, the boat stops. The Captain had to turn the boat around because Andre called saying we left him at the dock. CRAP!!! I must have counted the extra person on the boat (a Captain in training). We made our way back to the dock, picked up Andre and then off to the fishing grounds we went. Below a pic of Andre being picked up.
Tumblr media
As we went on our way we got a nice surprise snack from the Chef.
Tumblr media
Thanks to OSAGE, H4L jigs, Jigging Depot, and this tiny blog of mine we were able to give away hats, T-shirts, and some nice jigs, knives, and other tackle.  All took place on the second floor while at the same time I gave a small orientation.
Tumblr media
Our plan was to start with ARS (American Red Snappers) at about 1 am and then make a run to Pulley Ridge but a storm was on top of the fishing spot and as we got to another spot we were greeted by the taxman (sharks). Bill and a few others were able to get away from the sharks and landed a few ARS and other fish. We then took off to Pulley Ridge and arrived in the am. The bite was slow but we managed to catch a few here and there.
Below is John with a keeper Red Grouper caught on a goggle eye bait.
Tumblr media
Below is Jongsoo with a Red Grouper caught on 220 gram Jigging Depot jig.
Tumblr media
Below is Nilson with a keeper Red Grouper caught on a goggle eye bait and Rori telling him to let him grow a tad bit.
Tumblr media
Below is Victor, the slayer, with a nice Red Grouper caught on a goggle eye bait.
Tumblr media
Victor again with a Mutton Snapper caught on a goggle eye bait as Brian is trying to lick a bit of luck off his smoking head.
Tumblr media
Victor again with another Red Grouper caught on a goggle eye bait.
Tumblr media
Jongsoo got this Red Grouper with a 220 gram silver Sharkjig
Tumblr media
Imram got his Grouper on bait.
Tumblr media
Daniel landed his Mutton Snapper on the jig. This one got him the first Mutton of the trip prize.
Tumblr media
I managed to land this nice Blackfin on a silver 120 gram Jigging Depot jig. This one took the biggest Blackfin pool.
Tumblr media
I believe Alex landed his Mutton Snapper on a jig as well. This one took the biggest Snapper pool.
Tumblr media
Chris below with a big Black Grouper. This one won the Biggest Grouper pool. He caught this Grouper using an 8 ounce buck tail jig tipped with ballyhoo.
Tumblr media
He picked it up a few times for those taking pictures.
Tumblr media
Below is Brian trying to show a Lionfish inside the Grouper’s mouth. Yes, they have reached Pulley Ridge.
Tumblr media
Here is some bendo action by Dustin.
Tumblr media
The bite stopped and the grind started after lunch. Luckily for those who paid the $100 for the all inclusive food package we were in for a culinary treat. Below is the Brizo, a grilled panini with smoked turkey, salami, Brie, Swiss Cheese, Berry Chipotle, and Aoli Balsamic glaze. WOW that was good!
Tumblr media
Around 3 pm we got into a few more bites. Here I am with another Mutton Snapper caught on a silver 220 gram Sharkjig.
Tumblr media
I apologize to the guys as I was not carrying my pocket camera but instead I had to run to the table to reach for my big DSLR camera. Below are Mutton Snappers caught by William and not sure if it was Andre or Dustin on the jigs. This was a short bite around 7pm or so.
Tumblr media
Night time came and we got a nice dinner, a Chicken Cordon Bleu, White Wine Beurre Blanc Sauce, Sauteed Spinach, and a Parmesan Risotto with a side salad. This is when I learned the beer was included in the $100 all inclusive meal plan.
Tumblr media
Night time was another grind, I expected the Blackfins to show in large numbers but it never happened. Below is Bill with a Red Grouper around 5 am.
Tumblr media
The Captain moved and the a.m. gave us another short lived hot bite. Here is Chris with his Red Grouper on the jig.
Tumblr media
Below is Bill with his Mutton Snapper on bait.
Tumblr media
Nilson below with his Mutton Snapper on bait.
Tumblr media
Below is Jordan with his nice King Mackerel from a flat line.
Tumblr media
We were also expecting a good number of Wahoos, but the guys trolling lost a few hits and waited for one to materialize. It just did not happen so they fell asleep.
Tumblr media
Since the bite was so slow Captain Greg took us to deeper waters in the 350′ to 450′ range where a mixture of AJ, decent size Almaco Jacks, and some Groupers were slowly caught. Below is Chris with his catch caught on a jig.
Tumblr media
Jongsoo got lucky and won a prize for most unique fish. He landed a nice size Long Tail Bass.
Tumblr media
Nothing was happening so we made a 25 mile ride to another area where Robert was able to land a very nice Black Grouper. He patiently waited on this fish to get out of the hole, but in the end he had to just put that pressure and pull him out.
Tumblr media
Alex found a nice Almaco jack here.
Tumblr media
After that we moved again and this time we were in a hot ARS and Yellow Eye Snapper bite. I think everyone was able to get fish in their coolers on this stop. Below is Rori with a nice Scamp Grouper caught on Squid bait.
Tumblr media
Dinner was a very nice Surf and Turf combination; Filet Mignon, Crab Cake, Hosin Greens, Roasted Red Potato, and Side Salad plus a great raspberry shake. After dinner we went on our way to one more stop. Some fishermen went to sleep, while others stayed awake preparing their rigs, checking their bait and chit chatting a bit.

At 2 am Sunday we arrived at our last stop, so I went to the bunks screaming LAST CALL TO FISH GUYS, IF YOU WANT FISH WAKE UP! Someone screamed F- DAT gonna keep sleeping!  Well this stop was mayhem fish after fish after fish, many got their ARS limit here and many put fish in the cooler. The Blue Runners were a pain, but I was able to get my limit of ARS and got me a few Muttons as well. Below is Nilson with his 2 am ARS.

We got back to the dock and put away our tackle. Then the ending ritual began, numbers called, people responded and fish went flying into their coolers. Below is Brian walking towards Mario’s cooler with his African Pompano.

Once the fish were in the fishermen’s coolers, it was off to the scales to see who had the biggest Grouper, Snapper, and Blackfin Tuna. Below is Chris who  won the Grouper category by a landslide.
Tumblr media
I won the Blackfin Tuna category with only a couple of pounds difference.

Alex won the Mutton Snapper category with a nice difference in weight.

All in all, there were some mishaps at the start, but great food started early, and the giveaways were given. As we started fishing we had some quiet time with slow quality pickings, and then ended up with some mayhem fishing time.
After the long grind many of us were able to fill our coolers. Here is my 120 quart cooler, I was very happy about it.

The best part was that I did not have to go hunting for ice since the boat now has ice for sale on the property.

Below is the menu we had  to chose from, sorry for the blurriness, it was hard to get a good pic.

A big thanks and kudos to Captain Greg Mercurio for allowing us to fish more on the way back home, finding a way to put us on the fish that were biting, Those last stops put a lot of fish in our coolers. Another big thanks to the crew for working as hard as you always do. I hope the black box was filled with a good share of thanks from the fishermen of this trip. And who could forget the great food and the “wake me up at any time to cook food for you” from Chef Chad. Once again an awesome trip.
Pulley Ridge Lite 2017 – Quality and Good Times Tourney This is our third annual trip to Pulley Ridge on board the Yankee Capts. As always, it was a blast to be fishing with great fishermen from our fishing forum communities.

[Exclusive] Interview With MAYHEM Director Joe Lynch
