The NHS and the ethos of person centred dignified care is rapidly being taken over by agendas such as: Waiting times, Patient flow, KPIs, Action plans, Short staffing, More for less, Transformation. The list goes on...

Understandably, with so many conflicting demands on staff, its only logical to ask; What are staff doing for the patient / service user?

This current NHS culture is becoming obsessed with compliance, assurance and accountability. I know, because I did the job for an NHS Trust. I personally struggled with this way of thinking. Where is the service user in all this? Decisions made from reports, data spreadsheets and assurance from action plans and reports. Rather than engaging meaningfully with those we care for and support.

So here I am, making an attempt to remind and hopefully inspire staff to think about the patient and that all important relationship between staff and patient.

I'm introducing to my wards a 14 day event, #Actoftheday . The aim is for staff to carryout the described act at least once in their shift. The Acts will be carefully chosen to promote and lead staff to think about building on that relationship. To make a connection beyond the task. Tasks such as giving medication, taking observations, collecting the plates after a meal.

I will ask staff if they'd share their #Actoftheday on a board and how it made them feel. At the end of the 14 days, I'll ask staff if they enjoyed the event and if they feel it makes a difference to care and their job satisfaction.

Fingers crossed, they find it easy and continue doing it and somebody steps forward to Champion #Actoftheday

A good relationship with patients leads to great patient experience, better care and outcomes for the patient, job satisfaction, person centred cultures.

Focus on this, the more chance we have of keeping patients and service users at the heart of what we do.
