Alongside the likes of George Habash and Ghassan Kanafani, Khaled was a prominent member of Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). As a Marxist-Leninist revolutionary organization, PFLP’s mandate is to liberation Palestine and resist Zionist military occupation. Khaled and her family were forcibly displaced during the Nakba and sought refuge in neighbouring Lebanon. Leila was involved in Palestinian liberation movements from a very young age; in her early 20s, Leila took part in several hijackings (TWA Flight 840 and Dawson’s Field Hijackings) which were direct political actions designed to draw international attention to Israel’s military occupation and the continued displacement of Palestinians. Some hostages interviewed by the press in the aftermath of the hijackings shared that they understood the motivations the PFLP and had gained a better understanding of the oppression experienced by Palestinians. In 1970, Khaled was detained by authorities in London, but was later released in exchange for the hostages. Leila Khaled continues to inspire the spirit of not only the Palestinian liberation movement, but also that of other liberation struggles. Despite the hijackings being largely peaceful, with the intention of securing international attention, there are vehement efforts to malign the legacy of the PFLP and Khaled as designated “terrorists”.
