A Tip for the Hangman by Allison Epstein
“London watched death for the theater of it. They’d revel in real death like poetry, and when they left, life would wash the blood from them like rain, and they would return to their work, to peace.”

local woman is shocked and distressed to find that christopher marlowe, 16th century poet famous for, among other things, his dramatic and bloody death, is going to die in the novel she’s reading about christopher marlowe in the year of our lord 2022

that A Tip for the Hangman book did not meet my expectations at all. It started out pretty good but then they killed walsingham and everything got ruined and the ending was so disappointing

this is niche, but when adam said, “deiner welt vielleicht” ... i instantly thought that that felt like the kind of callous gut-stabbing comeback rooster would have shattered jake's heart with during their final fight.
i can see it crystal clear—this being their last ever interaction before the call back top gun.
"Bradley Bradshaw, the center of the universe." Jake would spat derisively, self-deprecatingly aware of the irony there.
"Your universe, maybe."
(can you picture jake’s devasted face? exactly like leo’s)

I AM ASKING ABOUT IT!!!
macheresin my beloved slutty besties
yay! the fic is actually rooster/hangman + phoenix/bob! and I'll give you the run down below the cut because uhhhh there's a lot. it's an idea that amy @floydshaw and I came up with when we watched coyote ugly together recently and woof it's gotten out of hand
it initially came about because amy was like omg what if coyote got his callsign because he used to BE a coyote. and then for me it turned into a complete AU thing where none of the characters (the whole squad feature in the fic) know each other through Top Gun/missions but Jake, Javy, Nat and Bob are all still in the navy (and are still Top Gun pilots) but get into trouble and put on probation where they're grounded for x amount of time or until they can make x amount of money. so to make money they work at a Navy bar (which is still called the Hard Deck because hello, perfect euphemism) and make money by dancing on the bar for everyone coyote ugly style. Rooster, Fanboy, Payback, Fritz etc arrive on shore leave and decide to go to this bar that everyone is talking about and Rooster sees Jake and is like. who the fuck is THAT.
and to skip over a whole lot of sex and plot, they fall in love!
but the pretty woman aspect of it is that Rooster wants to help Jake (and the others, I guess) get back in the air. somehow.

Hangman, but as a werewolf (personal)
I have this head canon ever since watching a few werewolf inspired things and Hangman needs to be a werewolf.
It starts out by everyone celebrating at the Hard Deck and after everything is shutting down, Hangman helps Penny clean up and while he's taking the trash out he's attacked by something. Turns out it was a mutated wolf (werewolf) and he slowly starts to turn into a werewolf ( it's a mix of human/wolf, like Lon Chaney Jr. and teen wolf) and the people who lost the mutated wolf are hunting for it and they end up catching Hangman. The Daggers are concerned and are trying to find out why he suddenly appears; only Javy knows because he saw the bite and all the symptoms Jake had.
This idea is so strong, I can't stop thinking about it. I've made a playlist, very bad art about my werewolf hangman hc, and the whole plot idea. No story, cause writing is so hard for some reason.

On Writing Jake Seresin
I don’t want to step on any toes but for the love of all that is good in this world, people from Austin, TX are not country. Austin is an overcrowded metropolis. It isn’t respected or well-liked by most of Texas or its surrounding states--frankly, most hate everything it’s become in the last thirty years.
If you want to headcanon Jake as a country boy (which is also not automatically a cowboy) that’s fine, but it’d be my strong recommendation to make sure he’s not a born and raised Austinite in your fic if you’re going to do that. Maybe he’s actually from somewhere like Florence, Elgin, or Marble Falls, but then moved to Austin when he was a little older.
I absolutely love that Southern boys are finally getting the love they deserve, but even Texas in and of itself has completely different cultures of what that looks like within the state. Texans don’t automatically have a clue about things like western wear, guns, or how to ride a horse.
TL/DR: Writing Jake as a cowboy or country boy from Austin’s as believable as writing him as a cowboy or country boy from Los Angeles.
A guy from Austin is likely to be the polar opposite of a guy from a town like Seymour. A guy from Flower Mound is going to be different than a guy from Lubbock even though they’d get along. Texarkana? Totally different than Austin. Never get in the car with a Houstonite if you wouldn’t get in the car with Kyle Busch.
Even geographically, the differences are drastic. West Texas is...dry.
Austin and DFW  (Dallas/Fort Worth)are giant conglomerations of poorly-defined concrete and cookie-cutter houses and lawns shoved together in the suburbs. Surrounding farm and ranch land has been swallowed up by houses and corporate developers, and it’s deeply depressing to watch those families who’ve been there forever living on their land trying to load cattle while ignorant drivers speed by. These areas of Texas were likely quite beautiful at one time, but now, you can’t even see the land.
Hill Country is beautiful.
East Texas is beautiful (though kind of swampy in some spots).
Rural Texas is where you’re going to get that quintessential “Texas” culture that the more urban areas piggyback off of at a very surface level. To their credit, some do genuinely get it. They’re just overrun by others who don’t.
I grew up in the country. My parents still live in the country. I still don’t consider myself country. I grew up with country boys and cowboys and even went to a cowboy church. I have a lot of family in Texas, and I have family in Austin specifically. They will tell you the same thing about all of the above.
I’m also not throwing city or suburban Texas boys--including Glen Powell--under the bus. Lord knows a few longtime followers here would laugh me out of the room on that one.
I don’t write all of this to be rude or crass, but I hope more will take it all into consideration when posting headcanons or writing fics.

question for my fellow writers!
how do you make it obvious on the masterlist that fics belong in the same universe without having to have too many masterlists at once?
I was thinking of doing something like this
universe title
fic title | read here fic summary
fic title 2 | read here fic summary
but I feel like this isn't very clear??? pls help a girl out
