Hey Sophie.. Since you're a nurse.. i just have to ask.. is men being horny for nurses a thing?? Or is it just a cursed fantasy from old people comics from facebook? I can't stop thinking about this..
I'm not a nurse yet (1.5 years to go!). I dont know how much of a thing that is nowadays, but I know there's some sexy nurse market out there somewhere lmao (sexy nurse halloween costumes and the old "spongebath" jokes).
I can only theorise the whole "nurses are sexy" thing is a combination of being a workforce that historically employed predominantly young women back in the day, another facet of the whole "uniforms are sexy" kink, and maybe also because nurses are in a position of power in their dynamic with patients so I'm sure people might role play that in their private lives if that's their kink (obviously not in real life because of, you know, being a crime and incredibly immoral etc).
mostly I feel like its the uniform thing back when nurses used to wear those cute lil dresses instead of scrubs. and it’s a weird thing to persist since the reality is that nursing is like the least sexy, glamorous shit ever. it’s taking care of people during the worst times of their lives while being exposed to a rich fucking tapestry of body fluids and smells.

“Namjoon...what kind of game are we playing?”
You smile through the question -- because no, it couldn’t be true that Namjoon tied you to his bed and left you there. The vibrator in your underwear suddenly changes speeds, and your mind is immediately drawn away from the thought.
“N-Namjoon?”
Your nipples stand up from the stimulation below, and your wrists twiddle around in your restraints. Your toes press into the bed and you gasp as the vibration grows a tick more intense.
You groan at the fact that you’re unable to control your pleasure, and you wriggle around the mattress trying to find some form of release.
The vibrator slows down for the first time and you whine as you toss your head side-to-side out of frustration.
Your eyes are shrouded in black -- still no sense of time or space around you. Your interview with Yoongi was definitely today, and you gasp as you recall.
Suddenly, it dawns on you that Namjoon removed your smartwatch before he tied your wrists to the bedpost.
“Okay Google, f-fuck,” You groan, biting your lip.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t quite get that.” Your watch responds, and you continue to whine and tug at your restraints -- nearing the peak of your release.
“Okay Google, what time is the event: my interview with Yoongi?” You plead, gritting the question through your teeth.
“The event: your interview with Yoongi was at nine A.M.”
“What time is it now?” You ask, feeling your underwear start to dampen.
“It’s nine forty-five A.M. Is there anything else I can help you with?” Google inquires. You whine before the watch shuts back off from a lack of response.
Just as you’re at the tip of release, the vibrator cycles through a variety of speeds repeatedly, and you feel a gloss of tears form over your eyes.
Your desire for relief causes you to hump the air, but you yelp when the vibrator kicks to top speed -- erupting your body into a bright, white heat.
The sounds of your frantic breaths start to fill your skull -- your throat running dry from your moans. The vibrator was still going, and you whine, knowing that it meant you were at rock bottom again before you could reach another release.
Despite this, your senses now seemed to be heightened -- your body aware of every neuron within and around it. You could now sense the earthy breeze coming in through the bedroom’s slightly ajar balcony door; your body slick from the heat you formed working your way up to an orgasmic release.
You could feel sweat droplets trickle down your skin -- and you notice the remnants of Namjoon’s cologne in the space.
After a moment you realize Namjoon really is gone.
The smell of his cologne floating in the air was always the last step in his routine before he left for work.

Namjoon waits outside of Yoongi’s office, looking down and studying his phone.
The screen has a choice of three buttons to press: low, medium and high -- and he toggles between the three quickly. He looks up and sees Yoongi approaching him, and Namjoon’s fingers hesitate over a final button. His thumb settles on high and he presses it, his lips curling into a slight smirk.
“I’m ready. You comin’ in?” Yoongi asks, hanging out from his glass doorframe.
“Yeah, totally. I’m all set.” Namjoon replies, clicking his phone off and slipping the device into the front pocket of his slacks. He grabs his leather portfolio and stands up, making his way into Yoongi’s office.
Namjoon sits down and crosses one leg over another, looking over a few notes in his portfolio.
“So, before we get started...do you know where your Vegas partner in crime is? Haven’t heard from her today. It’s so unlike her.” Yoongi states, looking at his watch.
“She was actually supposed to be my first CEO interview this morning.” He mentions, sucking his teeth in disappointment.
“That is strange. I’m not sure. She just might be tied up with something at the moment, I suppose?” Namjoon shrugs as he responds before looking up at Yoongi.
“Maybe...” Yoongi’s eyes drift into his head to think, but he shakes his head and focuses back on Namjoon.

Your ears perk up as you hear footsteps in the hall and you start to gently tug at your silky binds.
“Namjoon...?” You inquire in a low, scratchy voice -- nearly breathless. You feel his weight compress the bed and you press your head back into the pillow.
Another wave of warmth starts to fill your body as his finger traces a straight line from the top of your abdomen to your bellybutton. You quickly heave as you try to anticipate where his fingers will land, and you moan as he reaches into your underwear.
“You’re soaked,” Namjoon comments, pushing the vibrator closer to your clit, causing you to arch your back off the bed.
“Let me g-“ Before you’re able to protest, you let out a pleasurable cry as the speed increases on the vibrator. You bite your lip as more moans try to escape your lips.
The sensations coursing through your body send you into an elusive wave of pleasure that washes over you for the sixth time that afternoon. You hum before your body jerks up furiously from the overstimulation and ends in a tremble.

You feel him remove his wool coat and toss it to the ground, the warmth of his body enveloping you as he climbs on top of you.
“Ow-” He suddenly feels a hard nip at his lip and he looks down at you, watching you remove your blindfold.
“Are you happy you made me miss my interview?” You snap as you glare up at him, shoving his chest away from you. You reach into your underwear and slam the vibrator onto the night table.
“Classic asshole move,” You grumble, reaching to the floor and slipping your body into your skirt.
“Fuck, baby. Please,” Namjoon dabs at his lip with his finger, looking at the slight blood on his fingertip.
You throw your suit jacket on followed by your coat and heels as he sits up on the edge of the bed. He tries to grab your wrist, but you whip around to look at him.
“You used me. You’re insane. Let me go.” You grit through your teeth.
Namjoon looks at you in shock, his eyes wide.
“You made me miss something I’ve been working for my entire life. Endless nights -- alone to get where I am. I can’t believe I let a few nights with you rob me of that.” You scoff as you think about it, loosening your wrist from his grip.
“God. Don’t speak to me ever again.” You say firmly before you leave the room. He reaches his hand out in vain behind you, watching you walk away.
“You know what? I’m the insane one...” You mumble to yourself, your heels clicking across the wood floor as you head toward the front door.

The next night, your eyes focus on your computer screen -- the familiar blue light illuminating your tired eyes. You couldn’t move or blink, feeling imprisoned by the thoughts from the copious amount of interactions for the last nine hours.
Taehyung’s typing outside of your door finally comes into focus, and you sigh -- inhaling first, and then blowing out air from your mouth to release some of the tension from the day.
You throw your head back in your chair and it leans back halfway, a slight release occurring in your tight muscles.
You lick your lips and it brings the slightest twinge of arousal to the top of your thoughts.
Normally, Namjoon’s lips would be buried between your thighs right now -- but not tonight. If you couldn’t have Namjoon by night, it was before work or for a quick afternoon romp. That of course wasn’t the case anymore, and you sigh.
You bite your lip to distract yourself from the thought, and Taehyung raps on the glass of your door.
“Excuse me...sorry to interrupt. Your meeting with Yoongi is in about five minutes, so you might want to head up.” Taehyung looks at you, and you can tell he’s forlorn at your situation.
“Great, thanks Tae.” You nod as you sit up, refusing to hold eye contact with him to avoid feeling any further regret than you already did.
You shut down your computer and gather your things, throwing your coat over your forearm.
“Have a good night.” You say quietly, and Taehyung waves at you as you slowly walk off, head hung low.

As you wait for Yoongi to return, your eyes scan the glimmering cityscape. You look down and swallow, the appeal of this office -- this view -- not as glamorous as it seemed a few months ago.
“Sorry about that. Had to use the men’s room really quickly.” Yoongi mentions as he closes his door, and circles back around to his desk.
“Wanna tell me what happened?” He sits and stares at you as he awaits a response.
You twiddle with your fingers in your hands, a nail depressing into the flesh of your skin.
“I...” You bite your lip as you feel tears well into your eyes.
“It’s just so unlike you to throw an opportunity like this away.” Yoongi prods, and you look up at him.
“I know. I’m so ashamed.” You respond, your voice trembling.
Yoongi sighs in disappointment, his fingers drumming the table.
“I-I was hoping for another-“ You start, and Yoongi shakes his head.
“You know I can’t do that. Don’t put me in that position. There are so many qualified people applying for this role.” He says, shaking his head again. “You were my top choice and you just didn’t show up. That tells me that you’re just not ready to handle the pressures of this position -- that you’re not taking it seriously. You can never have an off day leading a company of this size and scale. Do you understand that?” He says firmly and you nod, swallowing your tears down your throat.
“No. I do understand, Sir. Thank you for your time.” You stand up and collect your things and bow deeply to him.
Yoongi lets out a deep sigh in disappointment as you walk out.
You take large strides as you make your way to the elevator bank.
As soon as you hear the ding of a car, silent, hot tears flow down your face and you sob.

The next morning you head toward the kitchen in your office, the sound of your heels echoing throughout the silent hall.
You open a drawer and reach for a Keurig cup -- choosing an Irish coffee flavor. You purse your lips, figuring its the closest you’ll get to alcohol this early in the morning.
You press the cup into the coffee maker, and you hear the machine pierce the plastic container. You hear the coffee start to flow into the paper cup, and you make your way to look at the city from the floor-to-ceiling glass windows.
You hear another set of footsteps, and you turn around to see Jimin. You knew he was Namjoon’s assistant, but he seemed to dress sharply for his role despite that.
Jimin stops in his tracks as he notices you staring at him, and he approaches the other coffee maker cautiously.
“Uhm, good morning,” Jimin says, his voice rising at the end of his greeting. He pulls a cup from a stack, looking at you.
“You’re Namjoon’s assistant, right?” You ask, folding your arms across your chest.
Your eyes were somehow incredibly intimidating in the moment, and it causes Jimin to shrink in your presence.
“Can you deliver a message to your boss for me?” You ask, raising an eyebrow and grabbing your cup.
Jimin gives you a silent nod as he stands frozen in position.
“Tell your boss he’s a fucking asshole.” You say cooly, blowing the steam from your cup as you stomp off.
The air returns to Jimin’s lungs, and he sighs as he rests his hands on the cool counter.

“Sir, I have a message for you,” Jimin says, rapping at Namjoon’s office door.
“Not now Jimin.” Namjoon says curtly, continuing to write on the piece of paper in front of him.
“It’s an important message. It cannot wait.” Jimin says firmly.
“Fine, go ahead.” Namjoon sighs, sitting back in his chair.
“The CMO asked me to let you know...” Namjoon perks up, his eyes growing wide. “She asked me to let you know...”
Namjoon’s eyes grow dark, his stare turning into a cold impatience.
“Just say it, Jimin.” Namjoon demands, tossing his gold pen onto the table.
“Uhm,” Jimin hesitates, but bites his lip once he sees the look on Namjoon’s face. “She said to tell you that...um, and I quote: you’re a fucking asshole.” Jimin cringes as he says it, running back to his seat.
Namjoon sighs and clenches his jaw before he runs his hands through his hair. He chuckles out of frustration as he leans back, looking around his office.

Taehyung’s phone rings, and he immediately picks up the line.
“God Taehyungie, it’s really bad over here,” Jimin whispers at the other side of the line.
“No, I know. I had to stay until eight last night helping her. She seemed pretty upset.” Taehyung sighs.
“Same here. She told me to tell him that he was a fucking asshole,” Taehyung gasps on the other end. “Normally they’re together, but now they’re both pushing themselves into overdrive at the office instead.” Jimin groans.
One of Taehyung’s vacant phone lines starts to blink.
“Hold on a sec Jiminie,” Taehyung presses the line and he nods as he hears the voice on the other end.
“Okay, yes. 63rd floor. Sure.” He smiles a bit and a glimmer of hope swells in his heart.
“I have to go.” He tells Jimin, hanging up the phone.
“Uhm, miss. Looks like someone is really sorry,” Taehyung says, watching a delivery man hand you a bouquet.
The bouquet screams sorry, the vase filled to the brim with a dizzying array of roses, tulips, lilies and orchards.
You roll your eyes as you see a small card tucked into the flowers: From Namjoon, and set the glass vase on your desk. You toss the card into the trash before diving back into your work, but Taehyung holds his hand up.
The delivery man enters again, this time with two large, differing bouquets: one of one hundred decadent red roses -- the exact number of days you’d been together with Namjoon before you split.
Another bouquet arrives of one hundred pink, white and yellow roses, and you inhale the scent of the flowers as its set in front of you.
You’re unable to process the moment as the man brings in seven more bouquets -- your office filled to the brim with a floral aroma. You close your eyes and inhale the scent of the flowers once more, the look in your eyes forlorn.
Taehyung looks at you with a soft smile, but he watches you quickly come to -- returning yourself to a state of anger.
“The monthly board meeting is in about three minutes as well,” Taehyung’s voice registers in your head, and you look up at him and nod.
You tippytoe and step over the array of flowers lining the floor to leave your office -- making your way down the hall.

You lean against a wall outside of the conference room, and you check your watch as you wait for people to arrive.
A man in a crisp grey and white checked suit walks down the hall. His black hair is slicked back over his head, and a small wisp of carefully placed hair sits over one of his eyes.
“Excuse me? Jackson?” You squeal, approaching the man.
Jackson turns his head your way and a smile envelops his face.
“My god, look at you?” You bite your lip, slicking your fingers over the fabric of his suit. “You’ve fucking made it to the big leagues, Wang.” You giggle, continuing to look him over.
“Look at you,” He throws the phrase back your way, his bright black eyes scanning your curves. He’d been after you for years and was fully basking in your attention.
Namjoon finally arrives, staring directly at you as he walks past the two of you. He watches people leave the room from the previous meeting, but his eyes dart back over to focus on you and Jackson.
Your giggles fill the hall as you and Jackson interact, and Namjoon feels jealously boil in his blood. After all, you were tied to his bed -- fully his, just a few weeks ago. You weren’t his anymore, but the sexy visions of all of the moments you shared were overtaking his thoughts: your silhouette in the shower, the water trickling from your body underneath the searing Vegas sun, the two of you hooking up repeatedly -- unable to get enough of each other.
The memories of your moans were tangible enough to feel on his lips, and he clenches his jaw as he watches the two of you.
Your eyes float over to Namjoon, and Jackson notices as he follows your eyes.
“Ah, trying to make him jealous?” Jackson smiles as you look at him quickly, and then back to Namjoon. “It can be our little secret.” He whispers, nudging you in the arm before you shake your head.
You glare at Namjoon and roll your eyes before you focus a smile back at Jackson. Jackson pats you on your lower back, lightly guiding you into the conference room.

As you enter, you pick a seat near the front of the room, and you subtly watch Namjoon hesitate to pick a seat. He exhales from his nose before he gets the gusto to sit across the table from you. You glower at him, and he smirks, satisfied with himself.
“So, the agenda was established previous to this meeting. Let’s just hop right in.” Yoongi starts, flipping through a few papers before him.
“First thing’s first. As you all know, we’re looking to lock a new CEO by the end of the year. That’s going to be challenging with the holidays, but I promise you we’re close,” He slams his fist on the table.
“God dammit, the next person could very well be right here in this room.” He points around the room and smiles, looking everyone over as the room erupts in a light chuckle.
Namjoon leans back in his chair with an air of arrogance, his fingers drumming on the table.
You angrily squeeze the pen in your hand, and look up with a smile -- trying to seem indifferent, but it was hard to be at the moment; indifferent that you were too busy chasing love and lost the biggest opportunity of your lifetime.
Your eyes catch Namjoon’s drumming fingers and you glare at him.
“Now, moving into updates from our CTO,” Yoongi points at Namjoon and he nods in response.
“So, earlier this year I attended the TechX conference to represent the product...”
Halfway through Namjoon speaking, you find your thoughts drifting to what’s happening below you.
You catch yourself hanging onto Namjoon’s lips: his plushy bottom one, the thick Adam’s apple bobbing up and down his throat, the deep valleys of his voice making you wet.
You find that your eyes shoot up to meet his, and then move to a brow that raises on his forehead.
You clear your throat and try not to look at him, but at the papers in front of you instead. The bundle of nerves between your legs were betraying you in the current moment and you weren’t sure what to do to quench your thirst. 
Your eyes float back up to Namjoon’s again, and this time you can’t help but lace them with lust. Your head falls into your hand as you watch him intently, tripping him up on his words.
After he finishes speaking you stare each other down, a storm swirling in both of your gazes. He swipes his tongue on the inside of his cheek as you stare each other down further, the tension tangible between the two of you.
“Lunch will be served momentarily. We’ll reconvene in ten minutes to finish up what’s left on the agenda.” Yoongi’s voice cuts through the taut revulsion that bounds the two of you.
You immediately stand and head toward the exit -- looking over your shoulder at Namjoon before you leave.
Namjoon stands, buttoning his suit jacket taut over his body.
Yoongi is about to call Namjoon over, but notices him follow you instead. Yoongi crosses his arms over his chest, and a series of thoughts finally click together in his head.

You saunter down the hall and you give Namjoon a look before you enter a small phone room.
The door is frosted and there’s only enough room for a floating desk and chair, and you slide back on the desk.
You raise your brows as you hear the door click open, and your fingers clench the edges of the table as Namjoon enters the room and locks it.
Your eyes scan the breadth of his frame, and you watch him slowly approach you -- his body landing to tower over yours.
He tosses his leather portfolio onto the desk, and your heart starts to race as your lungs fill with the spicy, sinful scent of his cologne.
Namjoon’s thumb and forefinger align with the edge of your jaw, his fingers tensing around the bone as he tilts your head up to meet his. His lips hover over yours in a hot hesitation as he hones his eyes on your dark, unwavering gaze.
His nose grazes over your neck to inhale your scent, now laced with notes from the flowers in your office. His eyes laser in on your lips, and your glare at him intensifies.
“Did you get my flowers?” He asks, still looking down at you.
“No. Not a single one.” You answer curtly, your nostrils flaring as you clench your jaw.
Namjoon blows a hint of annoyance from his nose, your loathing gaze only growing more penetrating.
“Why’d you follow me?” You ask, your voice thick with desire as you look from his lips up to the smoking lust in his eyes.
“You really don’t know?” You’re nearly breathless as his lips draw closer. You try not to let it affect you, but your toes curl up in your heels — your nails sinking into the wood grooves of the desk.
“No, I don’t know,” You breathe in. “Tell me.” You say with a deep exhale, an achy desire coating your throat.
You heart is ready to burst how much you craved him in this moment -- but you refused to give into him first.
“I’m here because I saw you looking at me with those hungry eyes like the very first day I met you,” His voice is rich and velvety, sending chills down your frame.
His lips brush yours, and it makes your own lips vibrate with heat -- the sensation knotting your core.
“Yeah...and what about it?” You breathe out.
He hums before your lips crash together, the room nothing but feathery moans and sucking sounds.
You pull your lips from his, licking the notes of sugar from his morning coffee from your lips as you roll his tie around your wrist. He collapses down and his hands fall to the desk on either side of you.
“I saw you looking at Jackson and I. Were you jealous?” You tease breathily into his mouth, jerking him closer to you by his tie. His nose grazes yours and he smirks.
“No...because you still want me,” He responds, his hands in your hair as he moves in to slip his tongue in your mouth.
“No I, mmh-“ you protest as you come up for air before both of your lips come together again.
“If you wanted him, he’d be here with you right now.” You let out a moan into his mouth at how right he is, grabbing the lapels of his jacket as your tongues intertwine.
“I thought you didn’t want anything to do with me,” He whispers, his breath hot in your ear after he pulls his lips from yours.
“I don’t...this is just a one time thing,” You lie, your head falling back as he kisses your neck -- the stubble on his chin scraping your flesh. You let out light moans as he sucks your neck, and his hands move to squeeze your waist.
“Be quiet...do you want the entire office to know how much you want me?” He demands, your breaths shuddering.
Namjoon’s hands press into your lower back and it makes you stand up, his hands wandering to your ass. His lips and hands were like magma, leaving fire in its wake wherever it went.
His desire makes you moan, his tongue swiping under yours as your arms reach around his neck to massage his hair.
“Liar,” He whispers as he backs you up against the wall, his hands gliding over your ass and landing in a smack. You gasp, the tail end of it a whimper that he captures with his tongue.
“Hush.” Namjoon whispers in your ear before he grabs a handful of your ass and smacks it again. You mewl, your hands wandering his firm, broad chest.
“You’re making me so hard right now,” His voice vibrates in the shell of your ear and you gasp as your hand wanders to the warmth of his cock, feeling how hard he is in your palm.
“Stop talking, we have five minutes,” You say breathlessly, and he pins both of your wrists to the wall. He pulls your skirt up to your waist -- sliding his hand into your underwear.
He dips his finger inside of your warmth, and he drags your taste down his tongue.
“Mmm fuck, I could take you right now,” He breathes out.
“Right now?” You ask, breathless. “No...” You say as his lips envelop yours again and you pull away for air.
“I think I’d rather have you tie me up in your room again because you’re threatened by me.” You state, and it makes him growl as he dives back into an open-mouthed kiss.
“Fuck, I couldn’t stop thinking about you,” He moans into your ear as his fingers slip inside of you. You groan at how wet you are, and you can feel yourself drip down his fingers.
“How many times did you imagine this?” He whispers, and you clench around his fingers as a burning heat fills your cheeks.
Your arms tighten around his neck and your fingertips crinkle the fabric of his suit as you near your peak. His fingers drag against your cushiony g-spot, and it triggers your release. He seals his lips to yours to hold your moans, and he pulls you close to keep you upright.
He licks his fingers clean and you kiss him, tasting your essence on his lips.
After a moment you pull your lips from his and he grazes his nose across yours a few times to try and recapture your lips.
Your hand smooths from his arm up to his shoulder, and you trail kisses up his neck. You use your free hand to palm him, and you tug at his ear with your teeth before you speak.
“I hope the job was worth throwing all of this away,” You whisper, removing your hand from his bulge as Namjoon gasps.
Your hands move to snap your skirt back down your hips, and you pull your hair from its updo to cover the blooming love bites all over your neck. You smooth the lapels of his jacket back down before you look up and relish in the flabbergasted look on his face.
Namjoon runs his hands through his hair, his cock still rock hard as you leave the room.
“Fuck.” Namjoon grabs the portfolio from earlier on the desk, using it to cover himself as he exits the room.

After you return to the conference room, you dig in your bag and pull out a compact. You bite your lip as you adjust your hair -- making sure no dark spots on your neck are visible.
You reapply your lip gloss, and Jackson kicks you underneath the table. He mouths “Did you...?” to you and you widen your eyes with an innocent look on your face. You steal a quick glance at Namjoon as he enters, looking down at the portfolio over his pants and back up to his eyes.
Namjoon sits, putting his elbow on the table. His fingers subtly meet his nose, and you watch him inhale the remnants of your sweet scent on his fingertips.
He tightens his jaw and you smirk, clamping your compact shut.

When I first began studying Renaissance history, almost two decades ago, I did so in part because I wanted a change from the world of present-day politics. I always found parallels, of course: I would laugh over sixteenth-century letters that unwittingly foreshadowed the voices of politicians I knew, but I was firm in my mind that the past was a foreign country. When I made jokes comparing those supranational centres of Europe - fifteenth-century Rome and twenty-first century Brussels - they got a laugh but I was sure I was being flippant. As I went on, however, the past seemed to become less foreign. I would read 'tech revolution' stories and think about the history of printing; read about the election of Pope Francis and think about the global sixteenth-century Catholic Church; read about the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean and think about the expulsion of the Jews and Muslims from Spain. This is not to say that nothing has changed: as we will see, there are many differences between that society and our own. But precisely because the legacy of this Renaissance (or Age of Reform, or Age of Exploration, if we prefer) has become so important in Western culture, in defining who 'we' are (and who 'we' are not), it is worth getting to know it better.
This is all the more important because the popular story of the Renaissance - like many versions of modern Western history - tends to focus on the genius and the glory at the expense of the atrocities. Machiavelli's ideas about power, for example, become a set of timeless aphorisms rather than emerging, as in fact they did, from a specific setting. The fact that all these people coexisted with the early European voyages to the Americas, to which some of them had personal connections, and that Italians provided personnel, finance and write-ups of the subsequent colonisation, is not unknown. The bloody side of the Renaissance has always been part of the period's fascination. It is more often told, however, in the fashion of TV's 'The Borgias' as the glamorous, sexy violence of the rich-and-famous murdering one another in pursuit of power (the viewer consoling herself that most of them deserve their fate), and far less the violence of war, exile, and colonisation, nor yet domestic abuse. This is the narrative that makes the Medici a family of mafia godfathers, and it is about as connected to the reality of Florence in the sixteenth-century as gangster movies are to actual life in a town run by organised crime today. I have no objection to people enjoying a bloody tale of vendetta: I’ve told the gory story of the Baglioni wedding in Perugia in 1500 to tour groups myself. Yet too much of this masks the brutal realities beyond Renaissance works of art. Take the 'Mona Lisa': Lisa Gherardini, the woman of the mysterious smile, was married to a slave-trader. One possible model for the 'Venus of Urbino' - Angela Zaffetta - was gang-raped. The Florentine Republic that commissioned and was symbolised by Michelangelo's 'David' came to a brutal end with a sack of 'unheard-of cruelty' in which thousands of men were massacred in just a few hours. 
As I was finishing this book in March 2019, forty-nine people were killed in a gun attack on two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. The perpetrator, a right-wing extremist, posted on social media numerous precedents for his actions, including notable Christian victories against Muslim forces. One was the 1571 Battle of Lepranto, the subject of my final chapter. Sixteenth-century history has rarely been so explicitly appropriated by the far-right as have, say, the Crusades or the myth of the all-white medieval West. More commonly, Renaissance history has played a more subtle, if no less pernicious role, the mythologies of its great men reinforcing ideas about European and Christian and white superiority without ever being so vulgar as to say outright. That is not to say it is wrong to appreciate or enjoy the artistic innovation of sixteenth-century Europe: there is plenty to wonder at. And by exploring how people of this world thought about their own media revolution, or considered questions of gender and sexuality, or responded to changing weapons technology, we can better understand our own world too, and the ways in which then as now brilliant cultural innovation can exist alongside - indeed, is often intertwined with - all manner of atrocity.

Repo! the Corona Opera: Part Two Fascist Boogaloo
Greetings fellow Repo! fans,
Here is my second installment of a series of three essays where I compare our contemporary times with the movie Repo! the Genetic Opera. My first piece detailed the similarities between the two worlds, and turns out, I have an awful lot to talk about still. I ended my last article by posing the question, "What went wrong in this dystopia to normalize the concept of death due to nonpayment?" No doubt, this movie is incredibly outrageous on many fronts, particularly within the dynamics of the Largo family. As mentioned in the previous piece, I highlighted the pervasiveness of GeneCo's power and influence towards the citizens in the city (is it called city of GeneCo? GeneCo-land? GenCity? An actual city in Italy??).

People who write stories often bend the rules to make their story compelling. Be it exaggerating social interactions, creating scientifically impossible scenarios, or even allowing the characters to use technology that does not exist yet. I admit the creators of Repo! applied all those tactics and more, which makes the parallels I draw that much more surreal. I want to acknowledge this before I dive deeper because yes, I truly think it would be impossible to have a company who can offer cheap and dirty surgeries with an absence of debilitating class action lawsuits resulting from botched procedures, infection, or their body rejecting the organ transplant. And while I admit Zydrate does not exist, yet, but we do have a long history with opioid abuse. If you asked me when I first watched the movie if I think the Largo family could be a mirror of an ultra wealthy family from real life, I would have politely disagreed with you. But times right now are freaking weird. A single day does not go by where something completely outlandish is blasted all over the news, particularly in the United States. 
In my last essay I pointed out examples where the citizens in GenCity live a life after experiencing a mass extinction event. Besides the technological anachronisms, society and GeneCo have an uncomfortably close relationship with each other. GeneCo is not merely a corporation that offers healthcare and surgeries, it has an unyielding power politically too. I argue that GenCity is ran by a fascist government that is controlled and operated by GeneCo.

If you're not a person who is super familiar with fascism, basically it's an extremist right wing government philosophy. I find it interesting that in the song "21st Century Cure", Graverobber says: Industrialization has crippled the globe. Although plagues, war, and other hardships existed before industrialization, that paradigm of change accelerated the imbalances between man and nature. Fascism did not exist until after World War I, after all. Between the world war itself and the Spanish Flu of 1918, there was a lot of pain and suffering felt all over the world. Fascists took advantage of vulnerable populations and asserted that their political party is the only correct party, and those who oppose are considered an enemy. Historically fascist governments have blurred the lines between the spheres of what's considered "public" and "private", and often danced harmoniously with business allies in pursuit of profit. As an effect, fascist governments have required citizens to foot the bill of a private company's losses. With enough propaganda, fascist governments will have you believing that this is ultimately for the betterment of everyone. And if you give them enough time, they will normalize terrible acts against humanity that barely make a peep, if the truth even comes to light.

For the rest of this essay, I will be highlighting examples in the Repo! movie that correspond with characteristics of fascism, using political scientist Dr. Lawrence Britt's The 14 Characteristics Of Fascism, which was published in the spring 2003 issue of Free Inquiry magazine.
The 14 characteristics are:
1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism: Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

The world surrounding GeneCo occupies itself with the concept that this incorporated area derives a sense of nationalism, in the absence of much dissent. If you see below, there is an advertisement on the top right corner that says, "Your Birthplace for a new Heredity". GeneCo is not just a company that sells organs and surgeries. It is its own incorporated city. This ad, combined with GeneCo's relentless messaging that not only did this company save humanity, you must conform to the idea that only GeneCo can provide you the experience of feeling clean, safe, and perfect.
2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.

Being able to legally repossess someone's organs because they didn't make their organ payments is about as disdainful as you can get. Nathan has a whole song called "Legal Assassin", and there doesn't appear to be many laws that would at least have the pretense that these repossessions are remotely humane. There are multiple instances in the movie where Nathan approaches a client who is already restrained, panicked, and powerless. From what I can gather from the media in Gencity, GeneCo proliferates the idea that the company would be dysfunctional if people could get financed surgeries and let those payments go to collections. When you're a mega corporation, they let you do it.
3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause: The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.

While the career of a Graverobber is certainly creepy and macabre, the idea that they could be executed without a jury of their peers is especially strange. After I created my last essay, my friend Veronica pointed out, that per "A Needle Into A Bug", one of the deleted scenes from the movie, that street zydrate is not actually derived from the brains of dead people. He extracts zydrate from bugs that nest inside the craniums of dead people, which in my opinion is a huge distinction. So who is he really stealing from? Is it morally okay to dig up a corpse to get drug goo to sell to junkies? Absolutely not, and the idea is incredibly disrespectful for the dead. And while I am sure there are graverobbers in this world that likely steal things like jewelry from corpses, I still wouldn't justify being executed extrajudicially.

Further, Graverobber's relationship with the Largo family has me believing even more that GeneCo needs them more than their media campaign can justify. Rotti has access to incredible surveillance of the city, so you would think he would eliminate anyone who enabled Amber Sweet's addiction. My theory is GeneCo knows that street zydrate may result in more surgery sales. However they want to continue making money selling the lab-grown stuff. So the end justifies the means, if we can associate graverobbers and those who use street zydrate as criminals, we can continue believing that "they" are the enemies setting everyone else back.
4. Supremacy of the Military: Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized. AND 12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment: Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.

GeneCo employs a private police force to carry out law enforcement. They patrol around a graveyard, a quasi-public space carved out for those who mourn. And because there is pervasive video surveillance, Rotti can demand that they do his bidding at any time. An example is his order to murder the repo man. We aren't aware of any sort of involvement beyond the borders of GenCity, but even the concept of a graveyard being a warzone is a special kind of hell. 
5. Rampant Sexism- The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Opposition to abortion is high, as is homophobia and anti-gay legislation and national policy.

Genterns! On the surface, it’s pretty cool that there is a large volume of female medical professionals who are skilled enough to carry out surgeries. However behind the sexy veneer is the reality that Genterns are not set up for success. They are not provided adequate PPE and work under non-sterile conditions. In the "Mark it Up" scene, one is killed by Luigi. Imagine going to medical school for years and years, only to be tasked with the job of organ warehouse worker. Then on one of your shifts you are stabbed to death because the CEO's son bumped into you while you were working. Not only that, but you are also expected to dress proactively for the purpose of selling the GeneCo product and experience.  
6. Controlled Mass Media: Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common. GeneCo has a monopoly on the media of the city. Politics, entertainment, healthcare, you name it, they have a direct stake in, and control over, the media. We do see from time-to-time tabloid clippings of the Largo family. But generally speaking, GeneCo puts a lot of effort in upholding their image. The best evidence is Blind Mag's story. She is a singer who acquired the ability to see after a GeneCo cornea surgery. And while she clocked into work day in and day out, singing and advertising for GeneCo for 17+ years, her departure resulted in Rotti murdering her. But why? Was he afraid of the things she would say? Rotti knew he was terminally ill when she declared her resignation, and yet killing her on stage is somehow less of a scandal?

7. Obsession with National Security: Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses. Fascist countries use fear as a tactic to keep the masses scared and compliant. The universe of Repo! is one filled with tragedy. Millions of people have died. I would imagine that the series of events that would lead to the creation and success of GeneCo was contingent upon people being scared for their lives. While dealing with the coronavirus, I find myself constantly checking my temperature, keeping my distance from people, and wearing a mask out in public. The human spirit is resilient, which is how we have survived so long. However sociopaths smell our fear and use it against us. The city of GeneCo is surrounded by plots upon plots of graveyards, signifying the carnage left after their public health crisis. I have a strong feeling that GeneCo was able to harness the threat of whatever caused the massive organ failure epidemic and as an effect created a power vacuum.

8. Religion and Government are Intertwined: Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.

This one is going to be a reach, particularly because there is an absence of religion in this story. I don't think religion would be on the creator's of Repo!'s purview, and honestly I don't blame them. If you look at the imagery of the story, however, it is very gothic. We have no idea if religion survives, and if it does, to what extent. I would imagine that people still have spiritual needs, and I argue that the GeneCo Opera is an example of how they get that fulfilled. 
"If you want it, baby, GeneCo's got it"

The GeneCo opera is not your typical opera experience. GeneCo specifically tells their customers to "testify". People are singing in unison, praising GeneCo. Clearly GeneCo has taken several human rituals and blended them together to create an over-the-top entertainment experience that seeks to advertise their company behind the testimonials of its patrons. The benefits of the opera for GeneCo, as a fascist entity, are two-fold: have people associate their most nirvana moments with an experience only GeneCo can offer (zydrate and surgery), and distract them with religious-like concerts so they won't question their neighbors being murdered on the streets by that very same company. 
9. Corporate Power is Protected: The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite. AND 13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption: Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.
Throughout the entire movie, the Largo family is front and center. We know Rotti is terminally ill, and he utilizes his final moments to tie up loose ends in his life. His children feel entitled to his estate and the company of GeneCo. At no point do we see Rotti consult with a board of directors at GeneCo, a private fiduciary firm, or with any government entity. I would describe the company of GeneCo to be a weird combination of an aristocracy, government body, and corporation. His children commit crimes with no recourse or justice. Rotti kills the doctor who tells him he's dying. Luigi kills multiple people throughout the movie. In one of the opening scenes, we see a photograph showing Pavi is cutting off a woman's face. In the credits we see Amber's body guards lying dead on the floor during her press statement. What sort of corruption took place to make these occurrences so prevalent and normalized?

10. Labor Power is Suppressed: Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.
We aren't super privy to the machinations that make this city functional. But there is a clear stratification that has sustained itself long enough that healthcare is not a right in this city, and those who can't pay for necessary healthcare can finance it. In a just society, if we have the means to save humanity, we can figure out a way to pay for it. Be it taxes on the most wealthy or other cost-saving measures, if there is a will, there is a way. However if you give a company enough power and money, it will do everything it can to stay on top. The best examples I can think of would be Nathan and Blind Mag's tenuous career at GeneCo. Neither really wanted the job they were given, but they were forced into those positions by Rotti. Had Bling Mag belonged to a entertainment union, would she have had more protections? Would a proper investigation into the murder of Marni result in justice being served, and the opportunity for Nathan to live a better adjusted life? Rotti masterfully manipulates situations that create powerless outcomes for his employees.

11. Disdain for Intellectuals: Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts is openly attacked, and governments often refuse to fund the arts We don't see any particular evidence that GeneCo is currently hostile to higher education or academia. What we do know is the technologies of this world are akin to something we'd see out of the 20th century. However GeneCo is advanced enough to synthesize usable organs.  In my last essay, I drew parallels to today by highlighting that there may have been a "brain drain" of intellectualism as a result of academics dying from their public health crisis. Outside of the opera house, we don't see many examples of art in this world. Maybe this is what happens when a government stops funding programs it deems frivolous or challenges the status quo?

14. Fraudulent Elections: Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.
Based off context clues in the movie, we know that there is a group of voting citizens who help determine whether or not a company can repossess financed organs that are passed due on their payments. We don't know who makes these votes, the election process, or anything like that. So it is hard to say if GeneCo goes beyond their media campaign convincing voters to keep repossessions legal. Despite this lack of knowledge, I would argue that GeneCo wields incredible power regarding the course of elections for laws that apply to them. Okay, you want to pass a law to make organ repossession illegal? Fine, we don't have to offer products on a payment plan. The very threat of being able to take away healthcare is something right wing governments loveeee doing.

Ryan Murphy’s (Kinda) True ‘Hollywood’ Story: 1940s Meets Gay Stars, Interracial Romance and (Gasp!) a Female Studio Chief
The prolific TV creator and Netflix unveil a revisionist take on the golden age of movies, showing how much (and how little) has shifted in entertainment and beyond: “'Hollywood’ can change the world.”
On an abnormally cold January evening, on the steps of Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium, history was being rewritten.
Two actors, one playing Rock Hudson, the other Hudson’s African American screenwriter boyfriend, Archie, were tucked inside a teal blue Packard Club Sedan, awaiting their cue. Outside, it was Oscar night, 1948, and despite warnings of grave backlash, the pair was prepared to step out as a couple for the first time.
Archie exited first, his eyes wide with trepidation, then Rock. In matching white tuxedos, they grabbed for each other’s hands and shuffled nervously down the red carpet.
The press box erupted in hisses, then boos.
“Are we doing the right thing?” Archie whispered.
“Absolutely we are,” Rock replied.
The two exchanged smiles, exhaled and made their way into the theater. Then they stopped and did it again. And again.
Ryan Murphy, the scene’s chief architect, was a few miles east, buried in one of his dozen other projects, but his fingerprints could be detected everywhere. The reimagining — part of his new Netflix anthology series, Hollywood — offers a world in which Hudson (played by Jake Picking) walked openly as a gay man, as opposed to the real-life heartthrob who remained closeted until his death from AIDS in the mid-1980s. Elsewhere in Murphy’s revision of history, an African American actress, played by Laura Harrier, is cast as the star of a major studio picture, written by Hudson’s black boyfriend (Jeremy Pope), helmed by a half-Asian director (Darren Criss) and greenlit by a female studio chief (Patti LuPone) and her gay head of production (Joe Mantello).
If Pose was Murphy’s effort to champion the marginalized, Hollywood’s his shot at imagining such marginalization was undone decades ago. The series, his first without his longtime collaborators at 20th Century Fox Television, drops in its entirety May 1, with a sprawling ensemble of real and fictional characters. It was supposed to feel timely, its period backdrop a reminder of how much and how little has changed in 70-plus years; now, landing in a world grappling with a global pandemic, its 1940s setting could be the escape so many are seeking.
“I’ve always been interested in this kind of buried history, and I wanted to create a universe where these icons got the endings that they deserved,” says Murphy, 55, who’s been waiting out the virus at his home in Los Angeles, with his husband and two young sons, who now require homeschooling. “It’s this beautiful fantasy, and in these times, it could be a sort of balm in some way.”
The Netflix executives who shelled out roughly $300 million for Murphy’s services in 2018 can only hope so. Already, they’ve had to cancel influencer screenings, scrap subway ads and punt on potential plans for a premiere benefit for the now hard-hit Motion Picture Television Fund, which houses several stars of the era in its L.A. retirement facility. As for the show itself, it’s certainly not the broad-sweeping, four-quadrant fare that Netflix is widely thought to prefer. The pilot episode alone features six sex scenes — a mix of gay and straight — and nearly all involve some sort of financial transaction. By episode three, which the show’s writers have nicknamed “night of a thousand dicks,” the characters have found their way to one of director George Cukor’s infamous pool parties.
Still, Netflix head of originals Cindy Holland says that Hollywood is exactly the kind of elevated, inclusive and ultimately hopeful programming that the company wants from Murphy, and the seven-episode limited series was fast-tracked as a result. “What I love,” she says, “is that Ryan is creating a world that he wants to will into existence.”

Murphy’s first inkling for Hollywood came over a celebratory dinner with Criss following their fruitful awards run for the Versace installment of American Crime Story. With rosé flowing, the two began discussing a next possible collaboration. Murphy wanted to do something young and hopeful; Criss proposed 1940s Hollywood. The 33-year-old actor had been fascinated by the lore surrounding characters like Scotty Bowers, the L.A. hustler who operated out of a gas station on Hollywood Boulevard, along with golden age stars like Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn, and he was eager to explore the era with Murphy.
“There’s a blinking red light on it that says, ‘Ryan Murphy, Ryan Murphy,’ ” says Criss, “because it’s sexy, it’s fun, it’s glamorous, it’s dangerous and it has resonance now.”
Murphy didn’t disagree. As a student of Hollywood history, he’d already gone down the road with his FX series Feud, which centered its first season on Joan Crawford and Bette Davis. This would simply allow him to dig deeper on figures who’d long captured his attention, from Anna May Wong, the first Chinese American movie star, who was effectively run out of Hollywood, to Hattie McDaniel, the first African American to win an Oscar and not be allowed to sit with her cast in the theater. “I’m always moved by these characters who weren’t fully seen or didn’t get their moment,” says Murphy in an interview on the Paramount lot earlier this year, where he was directing Meryl Streep in The Prom, another Netflix production. At one point, he’d even toyed with the idea of doing a Biography-style anthology series with an episode devoted to each.  
Not long after that dinner, Criss was at a bachelor party when his phone rang. It was Murphy. “He says, 'Do you mind if I just do my thing on this?’ ” says Criss. “And I’m like, 'You’re Ryan fucking Murphy. Do whatever you want!’ ”
So, Murphy picked a collaborator, Ian Brennan, with whom he’d worked on Glee, Scream Queens and The Politician, and the two began quietly tossing around ideas. With the help of a few researchers, they landed on a story that revolved around a Bowers-esque service station, with a staff full of actors and directors looking to be stars. “It was super fun and sexy and salacious,” says Brennan, “but it was also about the #MeToo underbelly of 1940s Hollywood, which felt very, very contemporary.”
The men found it exhilarating to depict sex so explicitly and in every possible combination. “To be able to describe exactly what is happening is really, really cool,” says Brennan. And despite the appetite for such racy content varying dramatically around the globe, Netflix brass was passionate about its inclusion — a marked difference from his and Murphy’s experience on previous shows, where they fought tooth and nail over the mere mention of sexual terms. “I hope this isn’t speaking out of school,” he adds, “but the one thing [Netflix’s vp original series] Brian Wright said to me, was, like, 'Thumbs-up on the sex. If anything, dial that up.’”
From the Pose writers room, producer Janet Mock would see Murphy and Brennan huddled in a nearby room and wonder what the latest “secret Ryan Murphy project” was all about. At one point, Mock found herself pumping intel out of a writers’ assistant, who told her, “It’s a thing called Hollywood, it’s about this gas station.” Having seen the 2017 documentary Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood, she figured, “OK, there’s no place for me in that. I’ll continue with Pose.”
But that would soon change, beginning with an eye-opening discussion in the writers room about which of the ensemble’s contract players would be picked to star in the film at the center of Hollywood. The role was that of real-life actress Peg Entwistle, a blonde Brit who jumped to her death from the famed Hollywood sign. “At first, we were like, “Well, it can’t be the black girl [Harrier’s Camille], they wouldn’t have done it. …’ And then it was like, 'Well, wait a second, what if it actually was? What if Peg becomes Meg,’ ” says Brennan. One what-if led to another and then another, and before long they’d decided to go back in and start revising history — this time, with Mock as a credited writer.
Now, rather than use the series to, say, showcase the powerlessness of a studio head’s aging housewife, in this case LuPone’s Avis, they tweaked the story so that suddenly it explores what would happen if Avis gained control of her husband’s studio. It was the same for several others, including Rock Hudson, says Murphy’s co-creator. Instead of telling the tragic tale of a person forced to hide, they allowed themselves to explore what would happen if he refused to do so. “Once we began asking, 'What if?’ it became a different show,” says Brennan, with Mantello adding: “It became a fable of what could have been.”
With Netflix execs eager to get the series up on the service, Murphy began loading the cast with his usual mix of familiar names — from Jim Parsons, as Hudson’s real-life closeted agent Henry Wilson, to Rob Reiner, as the head of the fictional Ace Studios — and newer discoveries, like Samara Weaving (Ready or Not) as Reiner’s daughter, or Picking as Hudson and Pope as his fictional boyfriend. As with other recent ensembles, he listed all of them not in order of importance or seniority but rather alphabetically on the call sheet. The message was clear: “The star of the show is the show,” says Murphy. Still, initial hires Criss and David Corenswet, who’d made his debut on The Politician, were given executive producer credits, along with backend points on the series. (There’s already talk of a season two, which would pick up in the late 1960s, with many of the same actors in entirely new roles.)
At some point in the production process, Murphy found himself scaling back the graphic nature of the series, too — a byproduct of his own personal recalibration, he says, having spent so much of his pre-Netflix life fighting to show so much as a woman’s nipple. “When you’re finally free, you have this tendency to go full tilt boogie, but ultimately I became much more interested in the emotion of the characters, and, frankly, I became protective of them,” he explains, suggesting every episode had an X-rated version, an R-rated version and a PG version, and, to the delight of participants like Corenswet, who plays an actor-cum-sex worker, Murphy would almost always select the R one.
“I think Ryan realized as we were shooting that the best part of the sex was the romance — and that’s always great to hear as an actor, especially when it applies to your five-page sex scene with Patti LuPone,” says the 26-year-old Corenswet. LuPone, for her part, was just thrilled she was still asked to do a sex scene at age 71. “Finally!” she bellows, praising Murphy for having both the vision and the courage to take the risks he does: “Ryan’s fearless,” says the Tony winner, who also popped up in Pose, “and I’m so happy to be in his world."

Long before Murphy was a household name, with a big fat Netflix deal to ostensibly take all the risks he wants, he was a frustrated former journalist fighting to change a system that wasn’t built for him. His own secret had been revealed at just 15, when his mother found a drawer full of love letters from his then-22-year-old boyfriend at their home in Indiana. Horrified, she and Murphy’s father threw their son into counseling, hoping he could be "fixed.”
A decade or two later, after his first career as an entertainment writer, Murphy carved out a place for himself in television, where he could exist comfortably as a gay man — so long as he didn’t try to write anyone like himself into scripts. “There were lots of words that they’d use to discriminate against you,” he says, “too flamboyant, too camp, too theatrical, and they were all code.”
By the mid-1990s, he’d joined forces with 10 or so other out or soon-to-be-out creatives, a group that included Nina Jacobson, Greg Berlanti and A Beautiful Mind’s Bruce Cohen. Giving themselves the name “Out There,” they’d meet in courtyards and living rooms to swap horror stories and try to plot a path forward. “We were young and didn’t have much money, but we had a lot of energy and a need to connect with and support each other as gay people working in a straight environment,” says Jacobson, who’d later collaborate with Murphy on American Crime Story and Pose. “And for a lot of us, it was, for the first time, that feeling of community.”
In time, Murphy, like the others, found a way to “monetize [his] pain.” His first creation, Popular, debuted in 1999, and other opportunities followed. Popular begat Nip/Tuck, Nip/Tuck begat Glee, and before he knew it, Murphy had moved from TV’s fringes to its red-hot center. As The New Yorker once wrote, “He changed; the industry changed; he changed the industry.” In early 2018, he signaled that power by signing a nine-figure deal, among the most lucrative in the medium’s history.
So it is perhaps fitting that Murphy’s first project wholly for and from the service includes a scene that trumpets what he calls “the thesis statement” of his career. It begins with Criss’ character, Raymond, being regaled by the story of Anna May Wong’s awe-inspiring screen test for the lead role in the 1937 adaptation of The Good Earth, a part that ultimately went to a far less deserving Caucasian actress. Suggesting it was one of the saddest stories Raymond had ever heard, a film executive played by Mantello responds:
“What’s so sad about it? The picture was a hit. [They] were right. You can’t open a picture with a Chinese lead or a colored one, a number of theaters won’t run it.”
Raymond: “But you said she deserved the part?”
Exec: “Yes, but the hard fact is, had she gotten it, the picture is not a hit.”
Raymond: “How do you know that? You never made the movie, so how do you know it’s not a hit?”
Criss’ character continues with a monologue that is so perfectly Murphy you can almost close your eyes and picture him saying it.  
“Sometimes I think folks in this town don’t really understand the power they have. Movies don’t just show us how the world is, they show us how the world can be. If we change the way that movies are made — you take a chance and you make a different kind of story, I think you can change the world.”
Criss himself would argue that Murphy already has. “His dial is always in extremes. So, if he’s doing Glee or Scream Queens or this, it’s at an 11, almost as a middle finger to reality,” says the actor. “It’s like he turned the dial over to say, 'This is how I’d like to see the world in my wildest dreams. Ain’t it fun?’ ”
In the past two years, since he moved his creative hub from 20th Century Fox TV, where he still maintains a considerable roster, Murphy been responsible for producing roughly 200 LGBTQ characters, many featured as leads. At least a third of his Hollywood cast is older than 70 (“Seventy is the new 40,” he teases), and nearly every project he launches is fronted by a woman — and that’s just in front of the camera. “If you see it, you can be it,” Murphy says often.
It’s a worldview that appeals to Netflix’s Holland, for whom he’s already prepped two films (Prom, The Boys in the Band), two docuseries (Circus of Books, Secret Love) and five seasons of inclusive television, including a Halston miniseries that, along with his 20th programs Pose, American Horror Story and American Crime Story, shut down care of COVID-19 in March. In the weeks since, when he isn’t toggling between Tiger King and MSNBC, Murphy’s kept busy writing two new decidedly hopeful series, each with the express purpose of providing viewers and himself an escape. “Ryan’s the rare creator who speaks to many audiences,” says Holland. “It’s not just gay people or straight people or older people or younger people, it’s really all people who are interested in the human condition.”
To date, Murphy claims he has yet to hear the word “no” from his Netflix bosses, though he’s definitely been nudged in certain directions. “They don’t want me to do small, niche things,” he says, acknowledging that not too long ago a project like Hollywood would have been deemed just that. “But they know how to market this,” he explains, noting that Netflix will push his latest series on viewers who also like love stories, young adult series and LGBTQ fare.
For those who worried the ultra-competitive producer would chafe in a system that doesn’t provide a public report card (aka ratings), he argues that that’s been liberating. Brennan backs him up, revealing how they received initial numbers for The Politician a week or two after it premiered late last summer and then another trove of data a month or so later; and though the latter could effectively game out how many people would watch the series over time, Brennan says, “We were sort of like, 'I don’t think that’s helpful.’ ”
Murphy takes it a step further, insisting he’s no longer interested in the old metrics, like how many people are watching or how many awards a series has generated. “All the things that people tell you will make you feel successful … I have those things, they don’t,” he says. What matters to him now is being able to tell stories that he wishes he or others could have seen. To that end, he can’t help but wonder what his own life would have been had he witnessed Rock Hudson walking the Oscars red carpet as an openly gay man — and though it’s too late to change his own experience, Murphy would like to be able to improve the experience of others. So, he took a chance and made a different kind of story. “Hollywood,” he says, “can change the world.”

Hell Week 101
What is it? Hell Week is a tabletop campaign, created and DMed by myself. It uses the Fate system instead of Dungeons and Dragons, which means there’s a couple of differences in mechanics.
What is the plot? In a world of superheroes and villains, a hero team has recruited four new junior members. They must face off against supervillain threats while also unravelling the mystery of the greater forces working against them.
The player characters:
Captain Catfish: A leopard/piranha hybrid originally created for evil. The lab he was created in was stormed by the government, and Catfish was found and turned into a hero. Cute and fluffy, but he also has a very big gun.
Cain: A bounty hunter with wings and the ability to create weapons out of nothing. Cain has quite a reputation, unstoppable, but a sucker for more coin.
Spud Bud: A large, strong, sentient man made out of mashed potato. He was brought to life by a crazed cook who is currently trying to track him back down to cook him. More disturbing than aggressive, he is a self-proclaimed ‘Sexy buff sweet potato’.
Night Knight: Aka “Goblin”. A goblin mage typical of a far more fantasy-style world, she’s dipped her fingers into quite a few pockets to satisfy her love for shiny things. Her magic is versatile but her favourite spell is ‘Blow enemy’s limbs off’.
The ally NPCs:
Lady Luna: A cheerful werewolf, the most encouraging of the team. She spends most of the time in her wolf form, and her power increases in moonlight. If you need support, she’ll always be there for you, even if her positivity comes on a bit strong.
Doctor Dalmatian: The team healer, in more ways than one. DeeDee handles majority of the team’s public relations, organising press conferences, filling paperwork, meetings with the mayor. He puts off sleeping for days to keep working and relies on caffeine to keep him going, which is a big cause for his irritable and impatient personality.
Gepetto: Between looking like a human-sized doll and his ability to control anything humanoid, Gepetto can come off as quite creepy. Luna and Dalmatian will vouch that he is still a hero who wants to protect people, even if he doesn’t do so well when he has to interact with those same people.
Harley ‘Taser’ Hofelder: Harley is the team’s engineer, upgrading them with gear and equipment. Although he rarely leaves his workshop, he still watches majority of the team’s battles. Harley is deeply afraid that they will be hurt or worse out in the field, but has never voiced this fear to his teammates.

The villain NPCs:
What is Black Mamba’s Villain Alliance? The VA is the main supervillain group in New Salvation City, where the campaign takes place. In a similar vein to the Legion of Doom, the VA is an association of villains who have partnered together under one leader in order to serve their own goals.
Fester Jester: Bouncy, colourful, and undead, Fester Jester is a clown and the ringmaster of her own circus. She has a near-unlimited power to bend reality, but only while inside of a tent. Fester Jester craves being the centre of attention, and while her focus is always on putting on a good performance, she’s very fond of abducting people and ‘convincing’ them to be an audience member or one of the acts. (Current status: Captured by the PCs, limbs were torn off but later reattached)
Trencher: A mutant anglerfish man with a mouth full of teeth. The Alliance’s smuggler, Trencher takes pleasure in his job and in acting like the monster he appears to be. Get on his bad side and you’ll wind up either cussed out or his next meal. (Current status: Arrested. Suffering severe lung and rib damage from close-range laser blast)
The Boogie Man: Combining both the looks of haunted houses and disco into his personal style, Boogie Man loves nothing more than crashing parties and making himself the headliner. With the help of his stage presence and his ‘Roadies’, he’ll keep you around to watch his full show. Whether you want to or not. (Current status: Active)
Miss Vile: One of the Vs, a villain duo of lesser status that work for Crono Sector. Vile has the ability of transmutation and uses this to make and sell super-powered weaponry. Compared to her partner, she’s level-headed. On her own, she’s glamorous, sarcastic, and rude. She has no qualms about calling others out on their bullshit. (Current status: Assigned by Crono Sector to accompany Boogie Man)
Mr Venus: One of the Vs, Venus considers himself the boss and Vile his sidekick. His charming personality is designed to lure his targets into lowering their guard. His power means that even a kiss to the hand will make your well-kept his stolen knowledge. Venus’s sense of self-importance leads to frequent temper tantrums and sulking. He wants to be a member of the main Assembly, and he wants Black Mamba’s job. (Current status: Assigned by Crono Sector to accompany Boogie Man)
Crono Sector: Owner of the most successful security company in the city, Crono has possibly the most reach in New Salvation. He uses his company as a front for not only his own crimes, but as a backdoor for the rest of the Assembly. A fan of time bombs and speaking in metaphors, Crono does not like mistakes, and he believes he does not make them. (Current status: Watching the hero team closely)
Black Mamba: The crime lord at the head of the Villain Alliance. Almost every action of the Alliance is directed by his hand, and he always gets a share of the spoils. He may appear to be a gentleman, but there is a venomous streak willing to sacrifice others for his own ends. his hands are blackened to the elbow and can dissolve anything they touch. (Current status: His name has been mentioned, but there are currently no leads as to who or where he is)

Famous American Artist: Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol - American, 1928-1987. Andy Warhol, one of the most notable artists of the 20th century, turned his fascination with pop art and advertising into iconic works of art. Warhol had a successful career as an illustrator in New York City before standing out as an artist with his paintings and celebrity portraits "32 Campbell's Soup Cans." He worked in a variety of media, including screen printing, sculpture, photography, and film. Warhol opened a studio in New York called The Factory, where everyone from intellectuals and activists to celebrities and drag queens gathered.  When he graduated from college with his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1949, Warhol moved to New York City to pursue a career as a commercial artist. It was also at this time that he dropped the "a" at the end of his last name to become Andy Warhol. He landed a job at Glamor magazine in September and became one of the most successful commercial artists of the 1950s. He won frequent awards for his singularly whimsical style, using his own technique of erased lines and rubber stamps to create his drawings.
 In the late 1950s, Warhol began to pay more attention to painting and, in 1961, he debuted the concept of "pop art," paintings that focused on mass-produced commercial products. In 1962, he exhibited Campbell's now iconic soup can paintings. These small canvases of everyday consumer products created quite a stir in the art world, bringing Warhol and pop art to the national spotlight for the first time.  British artist Richard Hamilton described pop art as "popular, transitory, expendable, inexpensive, mass-produced, young, witty, sexy, sophisticated, glamorous, big business." As Warhol himself put it: "Once you 'have' pop, you can't ever see a sign the same way again. And once you think of pop, you'll never see America the same way again."  Andy Warhol pop art featured Coca-Cola bottles, vacuum cleaners, and hamburgers.
 In 1968, however, Warhol's prosperous career almost ended. Valerie Solanas, an aspiring writer and radical feminist, shot him on June 3. Warhol was seriously injured in this attack. Solanas had appeared in one of Warhol's films and she was reportedly upset with him for her refusal to use a script that she had written. After the shooting, Solanas was arrested and later pleaded guilty to the crime. Warhol spent weeks in a New York hospital recovering from his injuries and underwent several subsequent surgeries. As a result of the injuries he sustained, he had to wear a surgical corset for the rest of his life.
  In the 1970s, Warhol continued to explore other forms of media. He published books like The Philosophy of Andy Warhol (From A to B and Back Again) and Exposures. Warhol also experimented extensively with video art, producing more than 60 films during his career. Some of his most famous films include Sleep, which shows the poet John Giorno sleeping for six hours, and Eat, which shows a man eating a mushroom for 45 minutes.Warhol also worked in sculpture and photography, and in the 1980s, he moved on to television, hosting Andy Warhol Television and Andy Warhol's Fifteen Minutes on MTV.
 In his later life, Warhol suffered from chronic problems with his gallbladder. On February 20, 1987, he was admitted to New York Hospital, where his gallbladder was successfully removed and he appeared to be on the mend. However, days later he suffered complications that led to sudden cardiac arrest and passed away on February 22, 1987, at the age of 58. Thousands of people attended a tribute to the artist at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City.

The winter sun was exactly what you needed. That's one thing you loved about touring, a lot of the time it took you away from the cold. You remembered when you first started out, you were in small venues with barely anyone watching. You were fortunate to find a few local circuits which helped you build your name. The trouble with what you were doing was that it was oversaturated, you needed something groundbreaking to make yourself known. You had been dancing since you could walk, you were fortunate to have parents who supported you. When you were ten you started saving your money because you were fascinated with the Argentinian tango and wanted to visit Buenos Aires to learn properly. You did exactly that when you were seventeen. You stayed there for three years. You also met the love of your life, Xavier who was there on business, on your 20th birthday. He was smart and successful and took you around the world with him and encouraged you to dance. He even built a very large dance studio in his apartment for you.  One day while you were in Bali he took you to see fire dancers, you were hooked. You wanted to learn that, so you did. It took a lot of courage as the fire scared you, and you burnt yourself a couple of times, but fortunately it was never anything too serious. When it was one of those rare stints you were back home in New York, you stumbled across burlesque dancing. The women were glamorous, they were sexy, they were everything you felt you needed to be. You read everything you could have about burlesque. You started to take classes to understand the basics and it started to snowball into other things, from aerial to pole dancing, to pyrotechnics and sword swallowing. You decided burlesque dancing was what you wanted to do with your life, and that's what you exactly did. The more well known you became amongst the dancers and fans the more Xavier pushed you away because you needed him less and less. You realised you didn't need him at all when you twenty-four and walked away from him. You weren't going to let some man destroy your dream. After you ended the relationship you ended up dating a lot of business owners and trust fund children who hadn't worked a day in their life. You eventually grew bored of this and decided not to date anyone which became easier and easier due to touring.
Sitting in the dingy bar bought back all those memories, it was nice to have a night out in between shows. You wanted to say that it was nice not being someone else, but in reality your stage persona was you. That night you were dressed in a dark red velvet pencil dress, it clung to your figure in all the places. You stood out in the crowded room. As did he. He was rough around the edges, not the usual type you would go for. He was captivated by you and he had a cocky smile on his face as walked over to you. He was wearing a dark red shirt which was buttoned down exposing his chiselled chest with a leather jacket over the top and dark jeans. He wasn't that different to the guys you went for, he loved himself just as much. He leaned on the bar as he stared at you smiling, you flirtatiously smiled at him as you slowly looked away. “What you drinking doll?” He moved closer to you which made you look at him with a smirk on your face. “Vodka on the rocks.” You raised glass at him as you said this still with the smile on your face. You adjusted your position as you leaned on the bar yourself, to accentuate your legs and ass which definitely caught his attention as he was eyeing you up as he ordered two more vodkas. “Do you have a name darling?” The smile not leaving his face. “Y/N.” You hold out your hand to shake his and he cups your soft hand in his rough ones before kissing the top of your hand not taking his deep blue eyes off yours. “Billy.” His voice was husky and low, like you he knew he was going to conquer you. You knew he was used to getting any girl he wanted when he wanted, so you decided to make him work for you. You were the one in control. “How does a beautiful girl like you find herself in a place like this?” His said as he took a sip of his vodka. You look at the bar, it wasn't great, but it definitely wasn't bad. It was just a bit middle of the road. At least they had good vodka though. “I'm on tour,” You smirked at him leaning in closer, you could smell a mixture of cologne and cigarettes on him, and he could smell your expensive perfume on you. “You in a band?” He laughed gently at this, thinking that there was no way an elegant girl like you could be in a band. “Something like that,” You winked at him taking the last sip of vodka before paying your tab. “Might see you around.” You blew a kiss at him as you walked off confidently swaying your hips. He stared at you in awe wondering if you were real. You enjoyed your two days in LA of not doing anything except preparing for your show, which came around quickly. The show was sold out, you were performing to a crowd of over 2000 people. This wasn't the biggest crowd you performed for, but it didn't stop the nerves. As you squeezed yourself into your crystal encrusted corset and adjusted your extravagant headpiece. “GUYS, DOLLS, AND NON-BINARY PALS PLEASE PUT YOUR HANDS TOGETHER FOR THE BEAUTIFUL STRAWBERRY D'LITE!” Your partner in crime, Leah announced to the audience. You walk on stage and begin your routine.  This routine involved you breathing and eating fire. The audience were starstruck. After the show you get dressed back up and make your way to the bar out the front of the venue and met with everyone who wanted to meet you and have photos with you. This was the favourite part of your night, as you got to meet people from around the world. You saw a few a familiar faces and enjoyed conversing with them and seeing what they were up to and how they were enjoying LA, or how they were enjoying the USA because some were from overseas and flew in specifically to you. That's when you see Billy again. This time he was with friends, you could tell it was his friends idea to go and see you as he looked like a fish out of water. He clocks you again and looked intimidated, he was like a shy school kid who was trying to pluck up the courage to ask you to prom. The crowd started to filter out and move onto the next place. You order two vodkas and bring them over to him along with a napkin which had your hotel address on it. His eyes are wide in shock as are his friends. “Repaying the favour from last night.” You smiled handing him the glass and napkin before walking off. His friend's jaws dropped so fast you were sure a couple of them could have swallowed you whole.   The hotel suite was large, you had a view of the entirety LA from your private rooftop garden. You were lounging under the moonlight in a sheer feathered robe that made you look like you had just killed your millionaire husband. When you get a call from the front desk saying that someone wanted to see you. You instructed to let them up knowing exactly who it was. You make your way downstairs to the bar in the living area of the suite and started making yourself a cocktail. The elevator dinged and Billy walked through to where you were. “What can I get you?” You took a sip of your cocktail smirking. “I can see something I want.” He walked over to you confidently, taking the cocktail out of your hand and had a sip before putting it down on the bar. You say nothing and lead him to the bedroom pushing him down onto the queen size four post bed and gave him a  show he never going to forget. The LA show signalled the end of your tour and you decided to hang around in LA exploring with Billy, which involved the historic music venues, a hike up to the Hollywood sign, and all the other touristy things. The day before you were heading back to New York he took you to his favourite secluded beach to teach you how to surf which was hilarious as you were really bad at it. You wiped out several times which made him laugh a lot. You spent all day with him, he was completely unlike anyone you had ever met. He wasn't trying to be anyone he wasn't. He had a real passion for surfing and worked as a mechanic in a garage. He had a younger step-sister that was studying to be a game developer. You instantly felt comfortable with him and he felt comfortable with you. You watched the sunset together, he lit up a cigarette and passed it to you who happily accepted it. You weren't usually a smoker, but it just felt right in the moment. You laid your head down on his lap still smoking the cigarette and he was playing with your hair gently. He was very content as were you. A wash of spontaneity came over you and you sat up examining his beautiful features. You decided not to go back to New York. “Do you want to go Thailand with me?” He looks at you in shock and nods with his mouth slightly agape.

dino golzine is a great antagonist.
to start with, he ruined so many children’s lives in sex trafficking, including ash’s. many of them never made it out alive. he was the man behind corruption and crime in multiple areas, planning operations in the military and killing countless people for the sake of human experimentation being only one of them. he has no back story because it doesn’t matter, as there is no justification or true reason to his actions. he simply had a lust for power, and so he ruined others in order to become powerful. sometimes that’s all there is, and sometimes that’s all there needs to be. he is a pedophile, a rapist, an old creep, and a mass murderer. he cares about no one but himself and sees people as tools that can be disposed of in heaps— things that owe him their life because he “created” them through torture all while calling it love. in short, he is absolutely despicable.
when you see him on screen you are disturbed by his twisted philosophy, you are disgusted by his brutal actions, you fear what he will do next to the characters you’ve grown to love, and you are angry when he doesn’t receive the kind of death he so deserved in the end.
dino is ultimately a manifestation of the corruption that goes on right under your nose. he is the embodiment of those who committed crimes and received no consequences for their actions in the eyes of the law. he is the direct cause of eiji (naive, like we all are at first) becoming aware of the world around him and its truth, and the reason why when eiji goes back to japan without ash, he will eventually realize his world is no different than the slums of new york, if only with less guns. he is deliberately unsettling to fans as a result of this and more.
no one really likes to talk or think about him, and that’s because true evil isn’t likable or glamorized. it isn’t sexy or fetishized. it is monstrous. it simply is, and you will despise it and ignore it as best you can because it is all around you. 
and any character that incites fear, among other emotions, due to realism like that is well-written.

McMafia is going to be released in Latin America. My translation of the interview with James originally in the Spanish language:
“We enjoy seeing other people commit crimes”: James Norton, actor of McMafia
Interview with James Norton, one of the protagonists of the show McMafia, who plays Alex Godman, the son of Russian criminals who tries to lead an honest life.
Why do you think that the stories about mafia are so fascinating for the audience?
I’m a big fan of mafia stories and epic movies like Godfather or The Irishman. I think it is related to the fact that we like what is subversive, we like seeing other people commit crimes; I think we all fantasize with what it would be like to go against the wind and break the system. Specifically, in terms of mafia there is a great story, sexiness, weapons and danger. Mafia is related to Italian families and loyalty, but the contradiction proper is smuggling, and our idea of mafia is this opulent family who is in control of a city. The whole point is to show how this community has expanded beyond a city, having values related to family and loyalty be overshadowed by a search for money and power. It is a different kind of mafia.
What has been your greatest challenge when interpreting Alex?
James Watkins, the director, and Hossein Amini, the screenwriter, wanted Alex to be the product of his upbringing. As he was born in Russia and was immersed in the private education system in England, working for very powerful media in the city, he is someone not so open emotionally. Thus, we wanted to show someone who was enigmatic and mysterious, in control, and I think having gone through many private schools and thriving is part of a survival mechanism. The challenge was concealing his deepest story, about his family, revenge, his most human side, the most emotional side. And another challenge, a bit more practical, was learning Russian. I had to talk to Aleksei Serebryakov and Mariya Shukshina in Russian, and that was tough, having to learn my lines and then talk to them and just nod as if I knew what they were saying; that was a challenge.
What is your opinion on the criminal world?
The show is based on the book McMafia by Misha Glenny, so we interpreted characters or people that were victims or committed those crimes. We wanted it to feel real; we wanted to show that the world of mafia and crime have permeated the corporate world, as well as the corporate world being linked to crime. What I most learned from the show was that the more aware I became of the corruption in the world, the more it shocked me; we should do more to placate this type of corruption. Part of the reason why we are fascinated by this type of life is because of the mansions and cars, but in the show we show the cost of that. My heart is with those who pay the price for a reduced number of people who lead a glamorous life and I think we should do more of what we can to stop this, being agents of change.
What was the most fun part of interpreting this character as an antihero?
What makes Alex so genuine is the fact that he is deeply human and I feel that increasingly, the idea of antiheroes is being left aside. We take distance from the idea of villains and heroes as shown in comics. We wanted the audience to feel they knew Alex, that there are people like him in the world that are working in finances or politics. Alex has a desire for revenge, but also for survival, and in most cases you think his actions are fully justified. I think the more complex or undefinable is a character, the more human it feels, and for me this is the reason why Alex is more appealing to the audience.
Did you have a chance to talk to the writer, Misha Glenny? Was there anything in particular that you took from the book to build this character?
Misha was very present during filming and it was exciting, because he is an encyclopedia on modern mafia. With him we structured the world to which Alex belongs, we borrowed plenty of anecdotes and knowledge on certain characters.
What is your expectation on the show?
We would be very satisfied if it sells internationally. We explored Russian corruption and part of the argument occurs in South America. Thus, we wanted to make sure that the story is as international as possible, because the whole point of McMafia is to show how mafia is no longer about the control held by a single family, is about control by global corporations.
Do you find any difference between cinematic and television productions?
One of the things that excited me about participating in McMafia is that almost all of us have participated in movies. James Watkins, British director of the Woman in Black, is for me someone renowned globally. The production of McMafia is so good that it would work if shown in movie theaters. Now in television there is a chance of having the same scale as in a movie, but with the chance of telling an 8-hour long story, and for an actor that is a gift.

A/N: @thesvenqueen​ You know my brain works in weird ways, right? So you said “hurt/comfort for sure but also pretending dating and also secretly dating AND the whole “I hate you” but ends up hooking up/getting together” were your favorite KA fic tropes and somehow that turned into this mess with journalism and fake dating and guns and drugs. It makes more sense when you read it, I swear! I hope you like it!
A very merry unbirthday to you!
Kristoff would be the happiest man in the world when the week was over. He still couldn’t believe that he had gotten himself into such a mess. It had been easy for the past year or so to pretend to hate Anna Arendelle. Her parents had been corporate royalty and he was certain that was how she’d ended up as their team lead fresh out of college when he’d been working for the tribune for three years longer than her. His articles were well thought out, hard hitting pieces of classic journalism, and hers were the world’s fluffiest puff pieces about the state forest queen’s three-legged dog or an ice-cream parlor worker who gave a kid a fresh cone when he’d dropped his. It didn’t make sense to him that she’d been immediately hired on as the head editor of the investigative reporting team.
It was easier to pretend that he hated her than to admit to himself that he actually liked her work. She picked light subjects, but she reported on them well. Her voice was clear and trustworthy when she wrote, and people liked to hear what she had to say. He liked to hear what she had to say, and that he also liked the way that she looked when she was saying it was a coincidence. A simultaneously fortunate and unfortunate coincidence given their current assignment.
He hadn’t expected Anna to take such an interest into his article proposal when he brought up the idea of an in-depth hard-hitting investigation into local restaurants that were doubling as fronts for various seedy and otherwise illegal activities. He had expected her to turn the thing down or turn it into something like “The Top Ten Drug Front Restaurants In Town” or something equally as “buzzfeed-esque”. What he hadn’t been expecting was for her to insist upon joining him with an explanation of “My parents loved this city, I became a journalist to make it a better place” and “We’ll be less conspicuous if we pose as a couple”.
It had all made sense at the time, but now he was walking into their first restaurant, a fancy Italian place that was rumored to hold high stakes poker in its backroom. It was one of the least worrying places they’d be hitting, what was illegal gambling and maybe a few respectable mob ties next to places who were possibly involved in human trafficking or gun running? It wasn’t the poker game that had him on edge of course, it was Anna in her little black dress.
She was a strictly oversized cardigan and leggings girl in the office, but here she was in a dress that showed off just how small her waist was and how the freckles on her cheeks also dappled her shoulders and chest. He couldn’t get over it, as much as he was trying not to think of how gorgeous she looked or how he could probably map constellations on her skin with his lips, he couldn’t stop thinking it.
“You look nice,” he finally choked out as they were seated. It made sense to say it because she did and they were meant to be dating, but it was about more than that and he knew it.
She flushed a bit. She often did that. He told himself it was because she was so fair in complexion. He let himself pretend, for the moment, that it was because she was interested in him. It helped him with his act, and it was nice to pretend that a girl as pretty and smart and sweet as Anna would get all dolled up to go out with him.
“So do you,” she said in response, speaking to him over her menu as if the tiny paper could hide her blush.
He was a gentleman, even if his thoughts were erring on the side of rakish. He pretended not to notice her blushes and glances towards him as he looked at his own menu. He knew it was likely an act anyway. They were faking a relationship for an article and it was going to kill him.
The waiter interrupted their solitude with the wine list and Anna froze up. He knew what she was thinking, he could see it on her face, the conflict between “we’re on a date and that means wine” and “we’re on the job and drinking is not a good idea”.
“None for us thank you,” he said with a smile, “We’re celebrating a reason not to drink for the next nine months.”
With that the waiter provided them with a congratulations and two glasses of water. Kristoff got a look from Anna, and while it didn’t look upset or even annoyed he had already begun the process of beating himself up for the answer. He could have said anything, they were nondrinkers, it was a religious thing, they didn’t serve the one single random wine she liked and he wouldn’t drink in solidarity. He could have picked one of many convenient excuses, but he’d said what he’d said.
Now he wasn’t just fake dating his boss who he was pretending to hate when they weren’t fake dating even though he found her extremely attractive and intelligent. No, now he had also gotten her fake pregnant from their fake sex life that he secretly wished was a real sex life. He secretly wished that someone would shoot him while they were working on this story just so that he wouldn’t have to make it to the end of the week.
“Cheers?” she asked, holding up her water glass with the same odd look on her face that he now read as amusement.
“Cheers,” he replied, clinking his glass into hers before taking a sip. This week was going to kill him one way or another.

As it ended up most of the places they’d ended up at were busts. It was Friday and despite the divine torture of seeing Anna in various little black dresses every night, they’d only had two illegal gambling situations to show for their work. One had been just kitchen staff running a football betting situation without dispensation from the state. The other had panned out to be an actual high stakes poker game as they had expected, but really it wasn’t a secret at all and while they’d report on it, they didn’t really expect anything to be done about it.
Tonight, however had been different. So different that the whole plan had gone sideways.
It had been easy enough in the beginning of the night. A nice steakhouse, no wine because Anna was still fake pregnant. It was getting so easy for them to fake date, he’d even accidentally pulled her chair out for her at the office out of habit that morning. She looked beautiful as always, her hair pulled back to reveal her long neck. He’d barely slept Wednesday night imagining kissing it. They’d laughed and smiled and toasted with their water, had eaten some good food and were about to call it a night when Anna had decided to take a trip to the ladies room that had somehow landed them where they were now.
They were in a back room, far less glamorous than the elegant dining room they had been in just shortly before. There were cases upon cases of what appeared to be cocaine around them and by some miracle, no alarm had been raised that they were present. Anna had pulled a snub-nosed Glock from somewhere under her skirts, which Kristoff would have thought was immensely attractive in a spy movie sort of way if it weren’t for the fact that they were in deep shit.
The police were on their way, and Kristoff, also armed was trying to remember when he’d thought this week was going to end on a dull note for their story. Anna had her gun trained on a man who was standing with his hands up. He hadn’t made a move since he saw Kristoff was packing and Kristoff was quietly praying and thanking whatever God that would listen that they had stumbled upon the greenest drug runners in the business. It would make for a great story if they made it out in one piece. Realistically he already knew that if they survived this they were going to hand the story over. They’d risk the danger of putting their names on an article about backroom gambling that got a business in a bit of trouble but pissing off people selling coke was bad enough without sticking your name on a front-page story about it.
They’d been lucky. The police arrived and stormed the place. Kristoff was right about the operation being the least experienced one in the history of the city and everyone involved on either side made it out unharmed.
Kristoff spoke to the police as did Anna, and it felt odd to him to be the one getting interviewed. He was usually on the other end of questions, which was odd enough, but in conjunction he realized that he could barely focus. He was watching Anna from across the way and she was shaking.
By the time they were both done being interviewed and had been cleared to head home, unsurprisingly without police protection, it was 1am. Kristoff draped his coat over Anna’s shoulders. It was a reflex, but also something he wanted to do.
“Promise me you’ll never do that again?” he asked her gently.
“What the gun?” she asked, seeming a bit shaky still, but present. She was tough. “I have a concealed carry don’t worry about it.”
He watched her fake a smile and he shook his head. Almost everyone in the department had a concealed carry, he was hardly worried about that. Though he had seen her put it back in a thigh holster when all was said and done which had brought a very fleeting return of the “spy movie sexy” thoughts he had before.
“No Anna, I meant… Don’t go into back rooms without me… without a partner. I’m just saying, you don’t know what might have happened if I didn’t come looking for you. I’d never forgive myself if something happened to you.”
Anna shook her head, “I thought you hated me?”
They were in front of his car now. He was going to drive her home, he was supposed to anyway. Everything felt twisted now, especially after he heard her say that she still thought he hated her when he’d never really hated her at all. It was easy to be confused he supposed, given that they’d spent all week faking being in love, but he wasn’t sure that it was fake either now.
He sighed, “I’m not good with talking. I can write words that make sense Anna, but I can’t…” he trailed off for a moment looking at her, really looking at her before he picked back up. She looked so small covered up by his jacket, but despite her size and the fact that she was still shivering from the adrenaline rush, she looked formidable and strong and beautiful. “I had to tell myself I didn’t like you to get through the day. You… I just never thought that there was a chance…”
She stood on her tiptoes and pressed a kiss to his cheek. Her eyes were wet, but when she spoke she sounded clear and confident.
“There’s a lot more than a chance Kristoff.”
