I watch so much content I can't help but see the similarities between actors/actresses. I last posted about how I couldn't stop comparing Chen Feiyu to the Sprouse twins when I first began watching his dramas, and the same is happening with Liu Haoran and Mile Phakphum. I can't unsee it!

Sara takes (kind of sort of) a break from talking fanfic and bandfic to talk about a different form of storytelling– music, and writing about music! @shineswithyou is a familiar face around Oasis and U2 tumblr, but what you might NOT know is that she has recently embarked on a writing journey of her own, with a substack blog about music and its place as the soundtrack of her own life.
Sara and shines talk about her blog, and the difficulty of “writing words about sounds”; how music is a language in and of itself capable of telling its own (and our own) stories.
Of COURSE we loop it back around to fanfiction and RPF (or, ‘real person fanfiction’), and how bandfic is, at its core, a pure form of love for the musical artist. so, i guess i should probably talk about Bitter Medicine on this website, as i'm watching twitter burn down and my reach do its best impression of a shrinkydink. let me figure out how to get this book across...
Bitter Medicine stars:
Elle, a kind of (read: very) disorganized descendant of the Chinese god of medicine who is basically a wimpy Sailor Mars who'd rather do art all day but is forced to undersell her abilities to protect her big brother
an emotionally constipated French elf who is a secret softy but has to be Hard and Tough because reasons; also he is seventeen anxieties in a Savile Row suit
Tony, the very gay, very self-absorbed brother who is a main character cursed to be a side character in a book that's not actually about him (how could this be? why would i do this to Tony? he doesn't know)
It's got:
two people who definitely like each other but can't figure out how to say it because they're isolated and don't people that often
a different act structure than you're used to, most likely
at least three chili peppers, according to sources not me (these are open door scenes, folks)
creatures from world mythology! actually it's pretty heavy on non-Western mythology
a Men in Black, but with faeries vibe
Nirvana in Fire references, because of course
but also a La Haine reference because i could
a teenaged tanuki, a ghost-spirit hybrid, a Jersey Devil, and a disaster polycule in possession of a single brain cell

hello! Id like to ask if you can describe what are the layers Luo Binghe (thai version) from SVSSS are wearing? Im having troubles the one with the collar im on a budget and I wanna cosplay him thanks a bunch!

Happy to hear you are looking to cosplay LBH! Ah, the very pretty but complicated Thai cover artwork. . . this one makes me groan at how intricate it is. I screen shot this from the SVSSS carrd.
There is a lot of layer action going on. Kityone, an amazing soul, did great work to remove text from more official artwork for the Thai editions.
This is the only full length shot of Binghe’s outfit I could find.

Layers
1.) Zhong yi layer 1- innermost layer - black. I’d pick a cotton or linen fabric for this. You are looking at one that is very slim fitting. The Hanfu Story sells them as well to give you an idea for cut; see
here
2.) Zhiju layer 2 - straight hem robe - black with narrow sleeves. It has what I think is an ‘artistic/anachronistic’ high Mandarin-ish style collar. The Erha manhua/artwork does this all the time. It seems to be a thing for xianxia attire. It is hard to find info on this in English, so, I could totally be wrong. I can only find that type of collar on vintage patterns - think cheongsam/qipao or maybe Qing historical garments. I’d personally copy the cheongsam/qipao collar as a base pattern and then modify it to match the hanfu style. I know this is a huge shortcut but it makes sense in my mind. Do a mock up with scrap fabric.
3.) Zhuji layer 3 - straight hem robe with red neck placket and red sleeve cuffs. I think this has shorter sleeves that fall just past the elbow (3/4 length?) and are super wide. [cries in sheer yardage] The sleeve looks like it almost reaches mid-calf or lower. I think it is supposed to be imperial/royal level - like the looooong sleeves you see in Nirvana in Fire worn by the princes when they attend court. The neckline is a deeper V and I think a good reference for the cut is from the cdrama My Heroic Husband with the MC, Ning Yi. His outfits frequently have this style which makes a clear X across the chest. The blue/teal one in the middle is the best match and seems to fall in the right spot on the chest.
4.) Belt with long fabric strip/accent. I have no idea what the large silver belt buckle is supposed to look like - we don’t have good enough detail and resolution. However, we can see that there is a long strip of red fabric that falls from the waist down the front to the feet almost. On top of the red fabric is a fancier accent piece in black with silver trim and tassels. I think it is a mix of these accessories from LBH and SQQ in the Korean cover here. With the shape of SQQ’s being a slightly better match - minus the tasseled pendant.
5.) Banbi jacket/coat - white with red trim and “artistic” choice collar. The jacket is a short sleeve one with a red cuff/trim that is clearly an under layer but I would attach it to the white jacket to make my life easier and less sweaty. The popped collar baffles me - is it sort of like a jacket with a lapel-ish collar? It gives me vibes of the jackets that Sakamoto and Takasugi wear in Gintama and shogunate officials which are also anachronistic by design in a series like Gintama. Or maybe a better comparison is the donghua for Thousand Autumns and Yan Wushi’s open collar layer?
It looks like the neck placket itself is thick in the middle and normal on the outside. I’ve attempted to make a quick example of what I think this looks like here.
I think this is what I would do to sew it onto the jacket and make sure to add interfacing and iron it well.
I would do these five layers if I wanted to cosplay this LBH outfit. The zhong yi layer is really important since that is where you are gonna sweat the most, I found it worked well with my 13 hours of WKX with a wig in LA having to stand outside in lines in the summer temps.

1. How many works do you have on ao3?
42 at the moment
2. What’s your total ao3 word count?
269,795. Almost half of that is one fic though, lol
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Currently most active in Trigun, perennially/intermittently active in Nirvana in Fire, currently dormant in CritRole, and hiatus in Sandman. Interests wax and wane! And who knows what I'll discover next? Not me, that's for sure.
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
Mate, I write mostly gen fic. I'm not here for the numbers. A kudos means that a whole human being with thoughts of their own spent some of their precious moments on God's green earth reading my thoughts and kinda liked 'em.
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I do! ...........eventually. sometimes several years later. And why? I dunno, it just feels polite? Also human connection, even digital. That's a thing.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Probably Inference, but that's just because of the canonical main character death. Visitation Hours is bleak in implication, not in actual ending. My definition of "angst" does not always align with readers' definitions of "angst," which can be hilarious for me when I get weepy reactions on something I thought was relatively lighthearted.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I do 'equivocal' better than 'happy,' I think? The goal is emotional resolution or emotional discordance. Happy's incidental, which almost certainly means I don't write a lot of happy endings by the standard measure.
8. Do you get hate on fic?
Not hate so much as people who are belligerently confused? I get some bonkers fucking comments and anons sometimes, which I delete, a smattering of entitled weirdos, and a sprinkle of (typically unintentionally) back-handed compliments.
9. Do you write smut?
Nope! Suggestive, sure. Dirty language, if relevant. Implication, when called-for. Smut? Nope.
10. Do you write crossovers?
I have written a short series of crossovers between Machineries of Empire and Nirvana in Fire. Haven't written any since, but they're not off the table.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Yup! More plagiarism than theft in entirety, though. At least once had someone lift a whole scene, dialogue, phrasing and all, and claim it as their own with obvious intent to get mileage without credit. And I have happened upon recognizable lines from my fics in other fics enough times to have several nickles. I get miffed about the latter, but the charitable assumption is just that it was a phrase fresh in their minds/recalled without association.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Into Russian, I think? Godspeed, fanfic translators, the strongest of us all.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I've co-written original stuff before, but I don't think I could ever do it again, original or fanfic. Not that it wasn't a pleasant experience at the time!
14. What’s your all-time favourite ship?
I don't have a favorite ship, but I do have a favorite dynamic, which is the mutual "you're the only motherfucker in this club who can handle me" a la that one Lorde tweet. The buckwildness has to be compatible, preferably complimentary. We're not talking enabling, though that can be part of it. It doesn't even have to be a ship. That grok/trust combination.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but probably won’t?
Look, I don't know what WIPs are going to get finished until I post them, okay?
16. What are your writing strengths?
I like character studies! And I feel like I am getting better at limited points of view, though they keep wanting to slide omniscient.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Same-hatting with @chubsthehamster here: plot. What the characters are doing in any given story is largely just to break up the dialogue and introspection. Things happening? They don't, sorry. Gotta work on this.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
For straight dialogue in another language, it's still dialogue, and it still has to serve the story, so if it makes more sense to drop it untranslated, drop it untranslated. If the reader needs to know what's being said, italics or paraphrase.
For mixed languages, it's totally situational and depends on the character, too. Did they just get back from an exchange program in France and they're insufferable about it? Are they a very new second language speaker? Are they an expat? A bilingual parent who wants their child to grow up speaking one language preferentially? An academic, or someone who learned their whole vocabulary based on a single vocation (ie: a doctor who can get by using Spanish in a medical scenario but not outside the clinic)? All of that is going to influence their speech pattern.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Nirvana in Fire!
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
Just as interests wax and wane, I like some fics more and some less, and today's favorite could be tomorrow's cringe.
