Zygarde the Cryptid
Calling it right now Zygarde is going to be a cryptid in Legends ZA that potentially partakes in some domestic terrorism as they struggle to build Lumios City into a metropolis of the future. Zygarde will not like all this construction of an enormous city in the middle of the region and will mess with its construction. Torn down buildings here, broken machinery there, maybe a collapsed mine or two. All the while people talk about a horde of weird Green Dogs that move faster than anyone has seen breaking things or attacking people, or maybe a giant serpent that scares people off. No one has managed to get a good look at it but it starts causing mistrust of Pokémon within the city and works up both people and Pokémon.

The Ecosystem Trio (Xerneas, Yveltal, & Zygarde) and the Wheel of Reincarnation
The Wheel of Reincarnation is the fundamental force of the universe that cycles and recycles souls into and out of the physical plane to experience life, death, and rebirth for all eternity. There are Seven Facets of the Universe or Stokes Of the Wheel that keep the universe functioning. The first three are more obvious: Xerneas, Yveltal, and Zygarde, who deal with life and death directly, and who are tasked with maintaining balance in the physical plane. The next three are the Creation Trio: Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina. They handle the balance of the universe at large, the non-life, the things that keep the universe flowing and running correctly. These three, paired with Arceus itself, are the other four facets of the universe, who will be discussed in a later entry.
Xerneas (#716)
Abilities: Fairy Aura
General Information: Xerneas the Life Pokémon. It is one of the embodiments of the universe, or even a facet of Arceus, however one wishes to interpret it, and is the Deity of Life. It has two “forms” it’s neutral state, the one it exists in when it is not using its powers, and its active form, the one most depicted in legends and seen in battle.
Xerneas is 9’10 ft (3.0 M) tall and weighs 474.0 pounds (215 kg)
Divinity: Eldritch Being
Heritage: Arceus
Divine Role: The Deity of Life
Place in the Wheel of Reincarnation: In every universe that Xerneas (or its dimensional counterpart) exists in, it is the one responsible for reincarnation and thus is the one who brings souls back into the physical plane to experience life anew.
Should Xerneas be destroyed, no new life would be born, and the universe/Arceus will exert its power to create a new one to return balance to the world as soon as possible. However, birthing Xerneas or any of the Eldritch Beings is exhausting, and the powers that be would need to rest for an unspecified period of time.
Personality: Xerneas is kind and gentle, and sees no difference in worth between the flowers, the Pokémon, and the people that inhabit the world. Often, Xerneas is in a hibernative state, where it spends time watching over the world from the astral plane and tending to its facet of the Wheel of Reincarnation there.
Role Amongst Humanity: Xerneas is the Bringer of Life, the Forest Walker, He/She/It/They Who Brings the Flowers, Revered One, Life Bringer, and many more variations of this. Humanity have known about Xerneas for eons, and have beloved it for the role it plays in the world. It’s hard to name any particular examples, when Xerneas is so prevalent in countless ancient and modern cultures, that there is no example greater than another. This is to say, that specifics are left to the needs of your campaign.
Special Rules:
1.) As an Eldritch Being, Xerneas is entirely incapable of being caught through conventional means, ie: no Pokeballs (not even Master Balls). This does not disclude un-conventional means, such as the Red Chain or other such magical entrapments, nor does it disclude Pokémon Rangers from being able to use their stylers to calm or befriend Xerneas.
2.) Should Xerneas be destroyed, life will cease to be born until Xerneas is itself reborn.
3.) Xerneas is indeed capable of bestowing immortality, but this is done seldomly, for it distorts the balance of the world when done too often.
Yveltal (#717)
Abilities: Dark Aura
General Information: Yveltal the Destruction Pokémon. It is one of the living embodiments of the universe, and the Deity of Death. It is 19 feet long (5.8 M) and weighs 447.5 (203 kg).
Divinity: Eldritch Being
Heritage: Arceus
Divine Role: Deity of Death
Place in the Wheel of Reincarnation: As the god of destruction, Yveltal is the natural counterpart to Xerneas, who wields the power of death over the ecosystem as part of the grand balance of the Wheel of Reincarnation. For every soul that Xerneas rebirths into the world, Yveltal balances it with another death. In the grand scheme of it all, Yveltal came second to Xerneas, for death cannot exist without there first being life. Its role in the Wheel of Reincarnation is simple yet heartbreaking: to reap souls back into the cosmic cycle of death and rebirth, where they may undergo transformation to become something new all over again.
Should Yveltal be destroyed, all death would cease until the universe is capable to rectify this. Be warned, this means that those caught in the throws of dying, will continue to suffer, and the consumption or destruction of other lifeforms, no matter how small or large it may be, will cease.
Personality: Despite the nature of its existence, Yveltal is not an unkind being, though it has been known to be ill-tempered at times.
Role Amongst Humanity: As the Deity of Death & Destruction, Yveltal is feared and revered by humanity, and more than one person has sought to destroy it and failed. It is truly the Harbinger of Death, the Wings of Oblivion, Death Incarnate. In times past, Yveltal was sometimes seen flying over battlefields to reap the souls of the deceased. In some depictions, Yveltal is a great kindness to those who suffer, though these depictions are far fewer than those that describe it as a merciless death god.
Special Rules:
As an Eldritch Being, Yveltal is entirely incapable of being caught through conventional means, ie: no Pokeballs (not even Master Balls). This does not disclude un-conventional means, such as the Red Chain or other such magical entrapments, nor does it disclude Pokémon Rangers from being able to use their stylers to calm or befriend Yveltal.
Yveltal has the power to take away life from any non-immortal being, no matter what stage in life or condition its in. Not only this, Yveltal is fully capable of permanently destroying a soul from existence, a counter to Xerneas’s Immortal Life, Yveltal can cause Immortal Death.
Yveltal ultimately gains power from death. When it hibernates, it rests in a cocoon state.
Zygarde (#718)
Abilities: Aura Break, Power Construct
General Information: Zygarde the Order Pokémon and the Deity of Balance. To most of the world, Zygarde is the being most relevant to them and their lives. Life and death come in cyclic patterns, but the ecosystem at large is vital for balance. Zygarde is effectively the supervisor for Xerneas and Yveltal, the one who observes and ensures that balance is maintained, and is there to strike back, should something occur to off balance the world or should something happen to either of its counterparts.
Zygarde is a unique being, an entity composed of 5 separate “cores”, ie: brains, and Cells. The Cells and Cores are all physically independent from each other, but the Cells are entirely at the command of the Cores, who function as the leader of the brains of a hive mind, utilizing the many Cells at its disposal to observe the ecosystem in many different places at once.  There are an unknown quantity of Cells, but each Core is connected to a proportionate 1/5 of the entire population of Zygarde of Cells… ish. It gets a little weird when combining into larger forms, but effectively Cores are able to lend Cells to each other for the purposes of powering up, and the fusion of Cells and Cores into a larger Zygarde form also serves to transfer knowledge to the other Cores. Because all Cores and Cells are part of the same being, this mutual cooperation is easy to achieve.
When the Cores need to fuse into larger forms, there are three main forms that Zygarde can achieve:
10% form is a dog-like form with 1 core and 10% of its Cells. This is the form that a single Core can achieve on its own without calling for help from the other Cores. It is 3’11 ft (1.2 M) tall and weighs 73.9 pounds (33.5 kg). This form is capable of running over 60 mph, and specializes in close-quarter combat. It likes to sink its fangs into an opponent’s chest.
50% form is a snake-like form with 2-3 cores and 50% of its Cells. This is the classical depiction of Zygarde, and often the state that it exists in to rest. As it rests, Cores periodically return to it and cycle back into the ecosystem, allowing Cores to share knowledge and for Cores to take turns resting. This form is 16’05 ft (5.0 M) long and weighs 672.4 pounds (305 kg).
100% form is the Ultimate Form of Zygarde, containing all five of its cores and 100% of its Cells. This is the form that emerges when Zygarde must correct a great wrong/threat to the balance of the ecosystem. It is 14’09 ft (4.5 M) tall and 1344.8 pounds (610 kg). This is the “Fuck Around And Find Out” form.
Divinity: Eldritch Being
Heritage: Arceus
Divine Role: The Deity of Balance and Order
Place in the Wheel of Reincarnation: Zygarde is not directly responsible for the birth, death, and rebirth of souls in the Wheel of Reincarnation, but it is responsible for what could be argued the most important: the balance of the ecosystem at large. Zygarde is the one who neutralizes threats to balance. Zygarde is the one who ensures that both life and death are protected. Zygarde is the one who acts when outside forces threaten the balance of the its world. Zygarde is the one who acts to birth new gods when needs emerge, such as Zacian and Zamazenta, or Solgaleo, Lunala, and Necrozma. Zygarde is the one who emerges to defend Xerneas and Yveltal (especially Yveltal) when something happens to either of them.
Personality: Zygarde has a balanced personality with a deep-seated love and passion for its home world. It is also, perhaps, the most ruthless of the three when the time comes. Yveltal may be the deity of destruction, but it sees itself as doing a kindness and a performing a necessary act to allow life to flourish (ie: it doesn’t see the unfairness in death), and Xerneas is the benevolent bringer of life—Zygarde though, Zygarde is the maintainer of balance. Zygarde sees life and death as equally necessary, but understands that death feels like a cruelty to life, and equally that life can feel like cruelty to those who suffer in anguish. It recognizes the need for ecological and cosmic balance, and when it does kill, it kills knowing that death is cruel to the living, and acts of a sense of justice that Xerneas and Yveltal intrinsically lack. Zygarde will protect its home world relentlessly. But on the flip side, it loves its home world with passion and ferver.
Should Zygarde be destroyed, the universe/Arceus would act to create a new one.
Role Amongst Humanity: Zygarde is the Deity of Balance, Gaia, Mother Earth, and so many countless more. As mystical and fearsome as Xerneas and Yveltal may be, they have little direct impact on the functioning of the world at large, only existing to ensure that life, death, and rebirth occur—barring weird circumstances, of course. When epic and existential threats occur, it is Zygarde that humanity has always had to contend with, either on its side or against it.
Special Rules:
As an Eldritch Being, Zygarde is entirely incapable of being caught through conventional means, ie: no Pokeballs (not even Master Balls). This does not disclude un-conventional means, such as the Red Chain or other such magical entrapments, nor does it disclude Pokémon Rangers from being able to use their stylers to calm or Zygarde.
Each Zygarde Core acts independent of the other, which doesn’t typically mean much in terms of practical game play, but it does mean that in the 50% and 100% forms, each Core is independently capable of observing the battlefield and processing information accordingly. Most pressingly, the five cores in 100% Form are fully capable of acting independently of each other, meaning that five separate points of combat may be present—think like an action game with a Final Boss Battle with multiple heads that you have to kill, except the Cores aren’t heads they’re brains controlling different parts of the total body and can strike independently of each other.
Zygarde has two abilities, both Aura Break and Power Construct, so long as it is in any of its combined forms.
Rules for the Mythology Section: All Pokémon listed exclusively under the mythology sections are entirely uncatchable by conventional means. Pokémon Trainers are not able to catch these Pokémon because they are gods and eldritch beings. Only Pokémon Rangers have a chance at taming these beings.

I realized I never posted ALL the colouring book illustrations, and since I no longer have any stock, I figured I'd share.
A collection of little Pokémon teams for Lost Lighters, drawn in 2021! There's a bunch of details I forgot about, but I still consider Ultra Magnus + 10% Forme Zygarde to be the biggest brained choice lol

Legends Z-A Thoughts and Theories!
Okay, I was pretty quiet on my opinions for Scarlet and Violet, but I'm confident enough to be very pleased and optimistic for this! Legends Arceus was the strongest Pokemon game we had in a decade, and to see them continue this, bring back Megas, and take an extra year to hopefully make it non-buggy? Makes me so so excited!
On Megas:
It's a bit of a surprise to see Megas back, but honestly? Not too much of a surprise. Even ignoring the inevitability of Kalos remakes, Megas are the only gimmick Pokemon kept around in their spinoffs. It was in Mystery Dungeon, Shuffle, Smash Bros, Pokemon Go, and probably more I'm forgetting! So it was always in the back of Gamefreak's mind and I'm glad it's truly back again!
With Gens 8 and 9 bringing back cross-gen evos, I think they'll focus on only giving Megas to three-stage lines, to not quash the potential of 2nd stage Pokemon getting regular evolutions. So starters and Pokemon like Flygon can get Megas since they can't evolve further, but Pokemon like Tropius and Chimecho probably won't, in case they get evolutions in Gen 10 (That then get Megas)
I also don't think we fully grasp how many more Pokemon can get Megas now, too. Barely any of Gen 5 and 6 had Megas (Seriously only 2 Pokemon between the 228 Pokemon in those gens) and we've had THREE more generations since then!!
Note: We went from wanting a Dunsparce evo, to wanting a Dunsparce Mega, to getting Dudunsparce with mixed fan reception. Now I'm going to be a selfish deluded clown bitch and get my hopes up for a Mega Dudunsparce.
Speaking of starters and Megas, do we think we'll get a mish-mash of older starters for this game that then get Megas (Say, Piplup, Snivy, and Scorbunny) or will we get Megas for the three Kalos starters?
Megas may mean Mega Stones return as held items, and held items weren't in Legends Arceus- new gameplay advancement?
Legends Arceus gave us 7 new Pokemon (most of them cross-gen evos) and a dozen new regional forms. Do you think we'll still get regionals this game, or will the design team be focused more on making new Megas instead?
On the world:
It's been confirmed the whole game is only in Lumiose City- how big is the map?? Hopefully we really do get lots of sidequests, biomes for wild Pokemon, and traversal options.
When is this? We're redeveloping Lumiose City, but are we in the past developing it into its current state, or are we in the present/future developing it into a new solarpunk city? Or neither, and this is a "Paradox" game set in a timeline which doesn't quite match ours?
This doesn't have to be an isekai (as in, we don't have to be time travellers again per se), just keep that in mind!
The "Z" in the logo represents Zygarde, with the black color and green hexagons. So who's the "A"? It's green with green scale/leaf patterns on it. What does it represent? The "Chaos" to Zygarde's "Order"? Is it a 5th Zygarde form or is it a whole new Pokemon?
Meta thoughts:
This further confirms my theory that Gen 9 will last until 2026, where they announce Gen 10 on that year's Pokemon Day for their 30th anniversary, and that's great! I'm glad they aren't overworking themselves too much compared to Gens 6-8.
On them "skipping" Unova remakes: I don't see this as skipping. We've been long overdue for a Z version since Kalos is literally the only Pokemon region to only appear in one release (no third version, no remakes, no sequels, no ultras, no DLC). So we're simply making up for the "deficit" of a third version here, and we can go back to focusing on Unova remakes for Gen 10.
Do you think we'll get any final updates to SV to tide us over until the next LegendZ trailer around August? Maybe a small DLC, mythical reveal, or free update?
Pokemon Adventures skipped the last Legends game, so they'll probably skip this one too? I'm fine either way- at least by skipping it, they won't be too rushed and stressed, and they'll actually have the time to flesh out SV and catch up with ORAS/SM/USUM/SwSh in the full volumes.
But on the off chance they do adapt Legends Z-A, do you think we'll get dexholders named Z and A??
Note for the future- the Yoasobi Pokemon song BiriBiri has a part where they namedrop all the game titles- one part has the lyrics "ABC to the XYZ". Long shot, but if Legends Z-A does indeed have an ABC theming, this could be a crazy bit of either coincidental or intentional foreshadowing!

so like… legends arceus gave dialga and palkia (the original sinnoh box legendaries) origin forms to match giratina’s origin form & similar lore to match, right?
do you think legends za will give xerneas and yveltal incomplete and complete forms (a la zygarde’s 10% & 100% form) with their “default” forms being their 50% forms?
i feel like it could be justified: say that we we only saw the 50% forms in X&Y because of their power being drained & channeled into the ultimate weapon or team flare could only control 50% of it or something

Is Z-A Just Zygarde-A?
In my last post, I theorized that the A in "Z-A" is Yggdrasil, or the Tree of Life Pokemon. Sometime during that post, it clicked: none of my theory would change if the "A" Pokemon was also a new, larger configuration of Zygarde. In fact, it would help.
Tumblr media
Source: BBC Bitesized
Bulbapedia theorizes that Zygarde Cells are based on slime molds, which would be pretty cool. But what if they're actually plant cells?
Of course, Zygarde isn't a Grass Pokemon, but can something made of 10-100 cells really be called a "plant" still? Maybe, I don't know. But Zygarde is a Ground Pokemon, so it's close.
Here's my theory: Zygarde was once a huge Grass-type Legendary Pokemon, the Yggdrasil Pokemon that Xerneas and Yveltal centered around, and may have even lived in originally before Team Flare captured them. This Yggdrasil Pokemon protected the balance of the ecosystem, as you might expect a Tree of Life legendary Pokemon to do.
(Zygarde still protects the balance of the land, it's just harder because half of it lives in a cave and the other half are cells. Something clearly happened.)
Then something cataclysmic happened to disrupt the Yggdrasil Pokemon. A Ragnarok, if you will, and the Pokemon was so devastated that it was split into countless cells thrown all over the world, even as far as the distant islands of Alola.
So Zygarde's cells are the cells of the original Yggdrasil Pokemon. Only, like most complex life, there are trillions of them. Zygarde isn't the complete Pokemon. It's much like Kyurem: a part of a fractured Pokemon that isn't around now.
And what would disassociated cells of the Tree of Life do if they were lost and trying to find their form? Well, remember the Tree of Beginning from the movie Lucario and the Mystery of Mew?
Tumblr media
Source: Bulbapedia
Well that definitely is a Yggdrasil reference. It's actually made of crystals, much like the Ultimate Weapon/Eternal Flower, and it can spawn ancient Pokemon from its circulatory system, including its own Regis.
This makes sense given the Tree of Life is the origin of all life, all creatures. And it gave me this idea: when these lost disassociated cells try to come together and find a form, they have a memory of all the creatures Yggdrasil created. This is why Zygarde Cells can come together to form a number of different Yggdrasil legends depending on how many cells are recombined.
Perhaps in Pokemon Legends Z-A, our goal will be restore some version of that tree. And to do that, we'll have to find 1000 Zygarde cells throughout Lumiose City. Why 1000? Well, it's only one more collectable than the 999 coins in the Gimmeghoul quest. And like that quest, occasionally we'll find clumps of them: ten here, fifty there, making our quest more bearable.
But more than that, Zygarde does have an attack called Thousand Arrows. Plus, once you do %100, the next cool percentage is %1000.
And once we find 1000 cells, they'll recombine to make Zygarde %1000. Origin Zygarde. Beginning Zygarde. Or just Zygarde-A.

[start post description:
(content contains suicidal ideation)
an arrangement of digital drawings featuring the relationship between two pokemon: in the first drawing, they are a weedle and a zygarde cell. Zygarde says, boredly, "stop defending me and just let me die."
Weedle replies while brandishing his stinger angrily. "No, I can't take it you asshole!"
The next drawing, Zygarde rests boredly behind an agitated-looking Kakuna. Kakuna has an "R" pattern on his chest.
The next drawing features Zygarde in their canine-like, 10% form. Their green color fades into a unique blue on their face. They are smiling, contently laying in a patch of grass; in their arms rests Kakuna, who appears just a little less anxious.
In the last drawing, Beedrill hovers, half-lidded eyes peering over his large blades. He has R patterns in his stripes. Zygarde, now in their 50% form, writhes reticently behind Beedrill, looking on ominously.

As an XY enjoyer, I was holding out hope for new Kalos games rather than Unova remakes. And Apparently I was right to do so! Now with the new game announcement, it means some things to me and I have predictions/thoughts.
(more under the cut in case.... future spoilers)
1. It seems like it's set in the modern day, potentially not long before or after the originals. So We probably get to see more Sycamore. Which. Yes please. Gimme. I would like to see my boy.
Tumblr media
2. If it's set not long after the originals, Potentially a Lysandre return. Or mention. There's no way he's DEAD dead. So they better do him justice. He got flubbed in the original games.
3. MORE KALOS LORE! FINALLY! 11/12 YEARS (when Legends ZA releases) AFTER XY PROPER!
4. The cancelled event Pokémon, AZ's Floette, might ACTUALLY be obtainable this time around! (Which also means the return of event mythicals like Volcanion, Hoopa, and Diancie)
4.5 which also means if you have Xerneas, Yveltal, and Zygarde from either the original games or the shinies from Go, USUM Ultra Wormholes, or SWSH Dynamax Adventures, they can probably be brought over!
5. Zygarde might be the big bad you have to defeat this time around, using Xerneas and Yveltal to stop them. Probably controlled by someone like Xerosic. (think like Ultra Necrozma in USUM, or Eternatus in SW/SH)
5.5 that being said, Xerneas and Yveltal may get new powered up forms (potentially Megas) as a boost to calm the rampaging Zygarde
6. Sycamore actually participates in Story Events with the player. Because he might feel bad for asking so much of them the first time. (It's a stretch but a Sycamore lover can dream. I want to see him be a badass like in the anime. Give him his Garchomp)
7. Team Flare might still be kicking around, though subdued a bit depending on how long after the originals it's been. Maybe some new faces in there. Malva is probably the one running things with Lysandre being MIA.
8. It might be revealed that Kalos and Paldea did have beef in the past, which is where Paldea's crater came from. Bringing Paldean pokemon into Kalos may strike up new dialogue. (If paldean 'mons can be transferred over, that is. If that's the case though Terapagos, Ogerpon, and the Sandwich Dragons are going to be nerfed. HARD. Especially the small Terastal Turtle.) (i wanna see Sycamore's reaction to a Clodsire or Terapagos. He'd love the little guys.)
9. New megas, but that's kinda obvious. I'm thinking some i want to see are going to be Rapidash, Talonflame, and the original Box Art Legends.
10. It may be revealed that Sycamore and Lysandre did have a little fling, if not a full on relationship before the weapon incident. They gave us Brassius and Hassel in SV. And implied one with ORAS Maxie and Archie. You know what we want, Gamefreak.
(bonus) 11. A Paldean character might appear for a side quest.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm holding out hope. But just the fact we're getting more Kalos stuff at all is enough to make me happy. It gets glossed over far too much.
still thinking about that one "mother characters and what pokeymons they would use" post you made and i still think its funny that boney was also included and got boltund. but now i just think it would be awesome if mick and king also got their own pocket monsters: i think mick should get fidough or dachsbun and i think king should get the 10% forme zygarde because it would be awesome. beautiful dog world out there
mick's clay model looks like a spry little spitz breed, so i wholeheartedly diagnose him with rockruff. he often gets called a bull terrier, but i think the sloping face is just stylistic tbh. that said, game freak really ought to make a bull terrier pokemon as soon as possible.
i think king would be a sleepy, cowardly old mabosstiff. or mmayyybbee a big ol arcanine that used to be energetic and regal in his prime - and now that he's 13 he just lays around all day. as much as i think mabosstiff suits him better, i do kinda like the thought of ness' childhood dog being a gen 1 pokemon (earthbound & rby came out so close together, yknow).
