Today we are shamelessly reposting from @wildkrattstv as we're heading off this afternoon for a glamping weekend! Anyway - as a bit of a tech-head, I do believe that not all screentime get in the way of kids connecting more with nature. For example, Wild Kratts is one of my son’s favourite #tvseries on @netflixuk - it’s an animated show based on real-life #zoologist brothers and teaches kids about #wildanimal species. 🐵⠀ Kids can learn about animal behaviour and habitats plus also about conservation and environmental issues. My son loves it and often brings up interesting facts & figures in conversation that he's learnt from watching. There are over 2,400 described species, but many more exist and are waiting to be discovered! They come in a variety of shapes and colours and are masters of blending into their surroundings. Some resemble the bark from a tree or petals on a flower, while others mimic dead leaves blowing in the wind!⠀ ⠀ One reason for their cryptic nature is that these predatory insects like to ambush their food. They will lie in wait for prey to venture within range. When they do, the mantid lunges forward and extends its raptorial arms, reinforced with muscles and sharp spines, in one speedy execution. Their warrior-like strike can happen in 30 to 50 one-thousandths of a second! That’s quicker than the blink of an eye!⠀ ⠀ Mantises are known for their lighting fast front legs, but they can also be statue-like too! We found a loquat tree in our new backyard (also called a Japanese Plum tree) I can't wait till the fruit is ripe, but we don't have to wait to enjoy the benefits of this medicinal plant. The leaves make a delicious tea, which will be a fun addition to our #poetryteatime Loquat Tea reportedly helps with digestion, respiratory, and skin health. It is rich in Vitamin A, calcium, Iron, and Potassium. They say it makes an excellent relaxation tea as well. My son & I are generally happier at the ‘adventure’ end of #outdoorlearning than the craft end - as we are a bit impatient shall we say - but we were inspired to try @mudnbloom ‘s leaf #claytile activity recently. How To: This is pretty simple - find a leaf with obvious, thick veins. Roll out some air drying clay and press the leaf into it to leave an imprint. Finally, paint the leaf and leave the clay to dry (you can also trim around the imprint too if you like, as we did). My son took quite a gothic or miserablist approach to his painting - he likes trees with black or dark leaves. I have no idea what that means for the future.. More: This was quite a nice way to spend half an hour/ keep son from asking for a snack, and we chatted about the changing colours of leaves in the autumn and also about why leaves have veins.
