Our Microbial Ecology professor is offering us extra credit if we can find three different kinds of lichen. My lab partners were unsure where to find lichens but the answer is simple, everywhere! The slightly more complicated answer is that they grow in the places that other plants and fungus can't grow, with rocks and tree bark being the most common. I was able to find all of these, in my own yard in about 10 minutes.

There was a colony like this one growing on the foundation of our house but I didn't want to disturb it so I was glad when I found this lovely specimen on a rock in our landscaping.

This was also on the same rock, it isn't a great picture but you can see the little rhizones that are used to attach themselves to the rock.

The reason lichens can grown on rocks and other inhospitable surfaces is because they are actually a symbiosis of two different organisms and there partnership is what makes it possible. Each lichen consists of mycobiont, a fungus, and a photobiont which is either an algae or a cyanobacteria. (a cyanobacteria is a kind of bacteria that can do photosynthesis.) The photobiont can produce energy through photosynthesis and the mycobiont can break down the substrate (yes, even rock) in order to get other nutrients that lichen needs to survive.

In fact here's another lichen I found on a rock in our landscaping. If you click on it to see the full sized image you can actually see the little grains of sand from the lichen breaking down the rock.

Keep in mind that this picture was taken at high magnification, to give you an idea of scale, here's the same lichen (or at least a very similar one) growing on a cement window sill at my kids school.

You can see how it might be overlooked as just some discoloration. If you've ever at an old cemetery, you'll see that a lot of the oldest headstones are pretty much completely yellow or orange, that's lichens.

This one was growing on a dead stick that had fallen off our apple tree. The round things are the apothecia, the reproductive structure of the fungal symbiont, that's why they often look like tiny mushrooms.

It can be very difficult to identify lichens to species because even lichens with different symbiotes can look very similar. If you were to disregard the apothecia, the one above looks a lot like the first lichen but the fact that they are on different substrates is evidence that they are different kinds. They aren't even the same growth form the first one is lobed and this one is foliose. I do own the keys to identify them, but I have yet to actually attempt to.

Lichen are also very particular about their habitat. The population on the apple tree (left) is very different from the population on the Cottonwood tree. (right)

Disclaimer: all of these lichens are very common in this area and were either on loose rocks in our landscaping, bark that was already peeling off the tree or on dead branches. You should never collect lichens if you aren't confidant that they are well populated and it's best not to damage their substrate to collect them

So I made a silly au to my own au months ago

So I found these old drawings in my old sketchbook

Basically, what I imagined is that - you know, I mentioned how something baaaad happened during the recital in my OMOFALLS au. Well here, I imagined that that bad thing would be uhm. Sunny kinda. Uh. Oyasumiying himself on stage. And I can't really spoil omofalls too much but basically Sunny was going through a rough time. Bad time at school, bad time at home, bad time doing some pretty sus occult stuff⁉️⁉️

Yeahhhh that Grimoire doesn't contain child drawings only uhm

RITUALS 🤓🤓🤓🤓

Again I can't spoil much

But dis dude HERE in that UNDEAD SUNNY AU just. Came back to life???

And I have several routes for how the events could play out. I'm still indecisive:

- Sunny stays alive the coffin somehow for like, 4 years. And like he stays alive somehow by...eating these weird ass blue flowers growing around and out of him??? Idk bro. Don't ask me how he survived this long with a stab wound, no O2, no food – leeeet's just pretend uh. These flowers are cool asf + photosynthesis with no light somehow

And after these four years he's like "fuck it let's get outta here" and Basil was here like "oh sunny I miss you" and then Sunny is like "surprise motherfucker" and Basil is like "AAAAAAAA"

And then they become a silly detective duo

The problem with that option is that (lemme just show you a screenshot of my reasoning lol)

So yeah. I...don't know if I'm even able to write toxic Sunnflower (because here Basil would legit give off groomer vibes) and like their dynamic, done correctly, could be just terrifying and I'm here for it. However it would lose that silliness I had in mind when creating that AU.

Also yeah, we could spice things up by making Basil research these stuff at the same time, desperate to undertand what the heck was sunny doing by the time he was alive. In his remembrance, yk.

BUT this gave me a sillier idea

- Kill off Sunny, as in he's not alive in the coffin. He's dead DEAD. Ded. And Basil researches this stuff to make him come back to life, BABYYYY.

And he succeeds! Except it took only one year. Basil is still messed up in the brain but like less messed up (and I can rest in peace bcuz he's not giving off groomer vibes here)

And so! They can be paranormal investigators together once again! Except this time it's way more serious!

Sunny's family probably moved out, or maybe not, idk

Either way he has to hide himself so people don't recognise him

Blue flowers grow out of him sometimes so Basil has to cut them out. It doesn't hurt him at all.

That forest is NOT normal at all guys 🤯🤯 but that's for another day. In fact, that's for the day I finally release omofalls lol 😵

synth my buddy synth is an iwatex oc of mine!! i dont focus on them enough.. dont give them enough attention.. smh.. shame on me.. this will contain some iwatex spoilers. here's their relationship charts that i made a few months back! there's an error in anemone's (red/orange girl) teenage thing. it means to say "vace's dislike of synth rubs off on nem"

some of this has changed, but most of it has remained the same. synth is cool. she's trans! which way? yeah! he realizes that during the game, so, sol can help him out and such.. he're younger than sol, also.. her birthname, which they like still, is nudibranch! dib for short:) then, when she realizes she's trans, she keeps their legal name (bc he's lazy lol, and as i said, he likes it) and then have a more public name, which is photosynthesis.

they choose that name because he's rlly a big flower guy. his job is agriculturist! and, florist in the side:) it doesn't pay too many kudos, but he likes it!!! knows all about the vertumnian.. vertumnilian? flora, and loves learning more about it!! however, you can't feed the colony on flowers. so!! their main job is agriculturist, they help maintain the land and all the jazz that agriculture involves. therefore, they're close with cal, and therefore, tammy!! i also imagine sol:) since their mom is head of geoponics

I didn't meant to be rude, but why is he fat? I mean, u have to bue quite Active to survive in the commonwealth, also he is kinda like a plant right? Photosyntesis n shit shouldnt make u fat i guess

How're you gonna say "normal not fat" to a fat person, about their oc that is based off them, and then say you didn't mean to be rude.... That is a very rude thing to say...

But back then, I was just learning how to draw, and didn't know how to draw fat bodies yet and to be honest, I wasn't putting much effort into learning. Now I do know, and now I do put effort into it. And if you've been around long enough to know what my very first drawings looked like then you should know how much my art has improved since then. At the time as well, I was just newly using art to ease and explore my dysphoria, and having him look more like what people expected men to look like felt ok. But just giving up and drawing him how he really looks and how I look has made me feel so much better about both myself and who I am as a man, and that it's perfectly okay (and sexy 😳) to be fat. And, it vastly improved my art skill.

There's a couple other reasons why he looks different in old art, 1 being that he's younger in those pictures and that's why his vitiligo is different too. I draw him at different ages depending on his age in relation to my fic which I don't plan on ever sharing any more of because of asks like this :) close friends are the only people I talk about this stuff with anymore bcs they aren't fatphobes, homophobes, or ableists

2nd, I am very active person, I walk and bike every day like, religiously, and I'm still chunky! Activity level doesn't equal weight. I do these things every day with my roommate who is very thin, and eats waaayyyyy more than I do. And I'm still fat and they're not! And again, he is based off me, so he is fat. We are both muscular and fat which just makes you look even fatter. Look up strongmen if you don't know what I'm talking about. He's that, but softer because I like belly. He's an old man, he stopped being thin with more defined muscles as he aged, just like everyone else

3rd, photosynthesis works by turning sunlight into glucose, which is sugar. Jay doesn't need to eat, but he likes to anyway. No matter how much you walk around if you're still 'eating' all day (by being in the sunlight) and then eating food on top of that, you're not going to look like one of those fake super models. Bodies just don't work that way, you're gonna be chunky. Plus some people are just big even without extra fat. Plus the dude is old as hell and has one leg, like... He isn't charging around fist fighting raiders and pretending he's Mr. Save the 'wealth like the game wants you to be. He just loves walking around with Nick studying things and farming at home. His story isn't the game's story and the game is super unrealistic in itself, I really would not base your idea of what bodies should look and be like off of gameplay mechanics.

And about surviving in the Commonwealth, you really don't have to be that active. You can just be strong, resilient, smart and resourceful and survive just as well or better than other people. I don't know why you think fat people can't walk around or whatever but we have a perfectly fine time doing stuff... I garden, walk, exercise, hike, whatever just fine and I'm still fat and I am not the only one so I don't really know why you think fat people would just like... Die off or not exist or whatever you believe

But most importantly he's fat just because I want him to be and that's it. There doesn't need to be any other justification really.

The SAVEd Project Master-Ish Post

“The SAVEd: A self proclaimed “team” of four surviving beings from scrapped, destroyed or collapsed AUs who managed to SAVE shortly before the destruction of said AU, allowing them to exist in a blank void of nothing as something similar to Outcodes. Thanks to the work of W, they were able to meet under very strange circumstances… These four more often than not go by the names ‘Beta’, ‘Ai’, ‘Mist’, and ‘W’.”

Howdy! It's me, Jpeg, and that weird description of a group that I just wrote is a rough run down of the dumbest idea for a project yet. I titled it “the SAVEd project” and if you read the description above, then it may be clear why. In this semi Masterpost (more like a concept post) I’m going to list the characters and their overall bios. If you don't care about this, then I understand. If you don't feel like reading all of it at once, I’ll link the individual posts at another given point in time.

It is also likely that the plot for the project will be written out a while before I make a black and white comic version of it so I have more time to get the character designs down and until then, feel free to ask questions if you're interested. And if youre not and you think Im a stupid wanna be, then thats fine too. I don't care.

In case it is not obvious, this is a fan project made by someone who's not the greatest with digital art since I still don't really know how to use my art program. Ai is the only truly original character of mine and was not based on anyone. Beta, Mist, and W are my takes on characters and the non existent AUs they're from belong to me, but the concept for Gaster, Chara, and Sans belong to Toby Fox. I hope that makes sense. Anyway, I'm going to go in that order too. Beta, Ai, Mist, and W. That's also the order I drew them in lol. Anyway, enjoy (sorry about the fact that this is inevitably going to be a very looooooooooooong post).

Name: “Beta” Dreemurr

Age: 11 (Incapable of aging)

Gender: Male

Soul Type: Red (Determination) fading into Light Blue (Patience)

Physical Features: Hair covers left eye, and scar covers right. He can see through his right eye, just like Frisk can even though their eyes also appear to be closed. Baggy jumper that resembles Classic Chara’s sweater. Locket was a gift from his AUs Asriel. Always walks around barefoot, and is the shortest of the group (not shown to scale in the drawing above). Does not appear to have a mouth physically, no one has any idea how that's supposed to work or if he uses photosynthesis or not-

Personality: Mute, but very expressive otherwise. Likes defenestrating people he doesn't like and is pretty chaotic. Can be chill and a good child sometimes. Sometimes. Always wandering off.

Name: Ai

Age: 16 (Incapable of aging)

Gender: Female

Soul Type: Green (Kindness)

Physical Features: Fluffy medium length tan-ish hair and light blue-grey eyes. Where's a pure white dress and leggings and white boots. Gold star hairpiece is a solidified SAVE point.

Personality: Tries to be serious and the ‘mature adult’ of the group even though there is in fact a real adult in the group. Was kind of adopted by W. Has a very dirty sense of humor and swears a lot.

Name: Mist

Age: 18

Gender: Male

Soul Type: Purple (Perseverance) but like, monster

Physical Features: Looks like any other sans, albeit a little shorter and younger. Sewed jacket and scarf. As he was homeschooled by his very busy father (W) he had a lot of down time in between lessons. (A note about their family. Papyrus is not present in the timeline as he was sent to train with Undyne in the capital. Mist and Papyrus were adopted by W at a young age when they were abandoned by their parents, their father being W’s brother. Papyrus’ nickname is Vapor.)

Personality: Overall relaxed and very dedicated to spending every waking moment of his life doing something. He can't just not do something. Mah bois a little hyperactive. Loves creating things and reading, overall the most open minded and creative of the group. Usually the one coming up with crazy plans and sometimes they even work. Has the slightest bit of survivor's guilt.

Name: “W”.D Gaster

Age: No one really knows...

Gender: Male (He/They)

Soul Type: Gold (Justice) but like, monster

Physical Features: One cracked down the front of his face, the other painted on because he thought it’d be funny. Usually wearing a labcoat of sorts and always keeps I.D on him, even after his AU collapsed. Golden eyes represent his soul type technically speaking, just as Mist’s Purple eyes represent his.

Personality: Tries to be the serious responsible adult but just cant hack it. Will get revenge on people who have previously hurt him or his children. Dad jokes galore. Mist is constantly asking him to not embarrass him in front of his friends and W takes it as a challenge. Sciency and overall just a dad friend, but literally. Rather than the usual "OooO spoopy scary bad dad man" hes "OOOOOOOOOO I see LIGHT am I dead?" crack head energy when hes not trying to set a good example for Mist and the others.

This post took all day to write and I poured two hours of work into each of these pieces of art, so I would appreciate if this post doesn't go to complete waste. So if you made it this far, thank you! If you have any questions, I think my asks are working? I dunno no ones ever asked me anything.

Venus Flytrap : Care & Growth

Plant Them in a Plastic Pot With Good Drainage

Venus flytraps need a lot of moisture, but too much water in the pot or in their ground can lead to mildew growth and root rot—so plant them in a pot with drainage holes. Although they can still grow in pots without drainage holes, this requires you to pay more attention to how much and how often you water.

Also opt for plastic pots rather than clay or cement blocks. Minerals in the clay or cement can enter their water supply, which can cause mineral burn.

As your plant grows, you may need to repot it to give it more breathing room. Gradually move up to bigger pots. There's no use planting it in a huge pot thinking that this will make it grow faster.

What Type of Soil Do I Use for Venus Flytraps?

As mentioned in the beginning of the article, Venus flytraps are used to growing in undernourished, acidic, and sandy soil. Using a 1:1 ratio by volume of sphagnum peat moss to horticultural sand is perfect for holding moisture while still providing drainage.

What Is the Best Soil for Growing Venus Flytraps?

Don't use regular potting soil, compost, or any enriched soils or mosses. Also resist the temptation of using fertilizers to help them grow. An overload of nutrients is actually harmful to the plant.

Use horticultural sand, not sand from the beach. Sand from the beach, like clay pots, can add too much mineral content and cause your plant to wither.

Use peat moss and not just sphagnum moss. The difference is that sphagnum moss holds too much water and has a neutral pH. Peat moss, commonly referred to as sphagnum peat moss, is more acidic and holds just the right amount of water, mimicking the conditions in the flytrap's natural habitat.

Use gravel or use more sand to provide more drainage. Perlite is commonly used to aerate soils and prevent them from caking. You can also try using a 1:2 ratio by volume of peat moss to sand.

How Often Should I Water Them?

The soil should be kept damp at all times. Usually, you only need to water every few days, but if you live in dry or hot areas, or if you have larger pots, you may need to water every day.

However, be cautious of overwatering. Growing in a large pot or in dry, hot conditions can make the surface layer of peat moss seem dry, but the deeper layers may still be moist.

Only use distilled water or rainwater. Tap water—or even filtered water—usually contains too many alkaline minerals that will harm the plant. Remember that they thrive in acidic environments.

If you are forgetful or don't have enough time to water, one trick is to put the pot in plastic tray, dish, or saucer. Fill the tray up with water, and the peat moss can draw it up over time like a sponge. This is most useful for smaller pots or during the summer, when the weather is hotter than usual.

How Much Light Do Venus Flytraps Need?

Venus flytraps can survive in partial shade and a minimum of 4 hours of sunlight, but if you want them to thrive, provide them with 12 hours of direct, bright sunlight. The morning is the best time for this since the rays are not too intense.

Avoid direct sunlight if it's too hot out, like during the summer, to prevent them from burning or drying out. You can provide some shade by hanging some cheesecloth or other light mesh fabric over the plants. You can also place them under the shade of taller plants or trees. Just make sure there is still adequate sunlight coming through the shade.

They can get some sunlight indoors if you place them by a window that has access to direct sunlight—usually windows that face east, west, or south.

What if I Don't Have Access to a Window With Direct Sunlight?

If you live in a place that isn't too sunny, or you don't have windows that face the sun, consider investing in artificial growing lights—usually fluorescent or LED lights. Keep the lights close to the plant (about 2-8 inches away). Remember to turn them off after 12 hours

Should I Feed a Venus Flytrap?

If you are growing them outdoors, they can probably catch their own prey. However, if you are growing them indoors, or you notice they are looking unhealthy, you can periodically help them out by feeding them small insects.

Just make sure to keep track of which traps you have fed. You don't want to overfeed them. They can only open and close so many times in their life, and repeated feeding can sap their energy.

It is best to feed them live insects because this will help trigger their natural digestive processes—urea released by the insect signals the plant to secrete digestive juices. However, feeding them live insects can be difficult to do and really isn't necessary. Feeding them dead insects is perfectly acceptable.

What Can I Feed Them?

As their name suggests, they love eating flies. However, they can eat any insect small enough to trap, such as mosquitoes, moths, ladybugs, spiders, beetles, and ants.

If you feed them, make sure the insect is about 1/3 the size of the trap. If the insect is too small, the trap may not close fully and may end up not eating it at all because it won't provide enough nutrients. If the insect is too big, the trap can't close fully, making it harder for the plant to digest the insect and increasing the risk of a bacterial infection (from bacteria accumulating on the dead insect).

How Do I Feed Them?

I use a long tweezer to hold an insect (small spider or fly). The trigger hairs should be touched for the trap to close. Tickle them a tiny bit with the insect's legs.

How to Care for Venus Flytraps During Dormancy

Venus flytraps bloom in the spring, grow through the summer and fall, and go dormant through the winter (roughly 3-5 months). They do not die in the winter, although it may look like they are. They just aren't trying as hard to grow in order to conserve energy for the next growing season.

This doesn't mean you can just neglect them. They still need sunlight and water to perform photosynthesis. Here are some tips to help your plant make it through the winter:

The best place to keep them is outdoors, but make sure you don't live in a region that is susceptible to frosting and freezing. Plants in pots are more likely to freeze over, so the best tip is to move them into the ground, where the soil large volume of soil can act as insulation that protects the rhizomes. Remember to use acidic, sandy soil that is suitable for Venus flytraps.

Keep the plants cool, but don't allow it to freeze. The ideal temperature range during dormancy is between 32 ºF and 55 ºF (0 ºC-11 ºC). However, it will still stay dormant at higher temperatures.

Some people keep their flytraps in a plastic bag in the fridge for the entire winter. If you choose to do this, remove dead leaves (appear brown or black) and mist with fungicide to prevent mold and fungal growth. Check on them periodically to make sure they have enough water

Give them some sun, but less sun than usual. Dormancy is thought to be brought on by a combination of dropping temperatures and shorter days (shorter amount of daylight). During the winter, the plants should receive less than 12 hours of light.

Keep the soil damp, but you don't have to water as much. The plant still needs some water, but it won't be using up as much of it. Monitor the moisture of the moss daily for the first week to help you gauge how often you need to water.

When it comes out of dormancy, gradually increase the amount of sunlight, food, and water.

Why You Should Take Care of Them During Dormancy

You can choose to let them die over the winter, but dormancy allows the Venus flytrap to remain healthy and strong. Cared for properly, they can live up to about 20 years.

Repot Them as They Grow

As more traps grow and get bigger, give them more room by gradually transferring them to larger and larger pots. This will give them more breathing room—both for the traps and the roots. Growing roots can cause the sand and moss to compact, so larger pots are a good idea to improve aeration.

Prune Dead or Dying Leaves

Sick, dying, or dead leaves and other plant parts are susceptible to fungal growth that can invade and kill the rest of the plant; it is important to remove them as soon as you notice them. It's easy to tell if the leaves are dead or dying: they will be wilted, dry, and appear brown or black.

It's best to prune as early as possible, but if you forget, and you notice mold starting to grow, remove the affected parts right away and lightly spray the plant with fungicide.

Should I Let My Venus Flytrap Flower?

Producing flowers is energetically costly for any plant, but in the wild, they do accept the cost for the sake of reproducing. However, for a potted Venus flytrap, flowering is unnecessary, and unless you are experienced and know how to care for a flowering plant, it will likely cause your plant to weaken and possibly die.

The flower grows up from the middle of the plant from a rod-shaped stalk. Once you notice a growth in the middle of the plant that doesn't look like the other flat leaves, you should nip it immediately.

What Happens If You Put Your Finger in a Venus Flytrap?

The Venus flytrap won't be able to harm you, but you will be harming it. If something like a twig, animal, your finger brushes against the trigger hairs, the trap will close, but it little else will happen. The trap will reopen in about a day. However, this is energetically costly for the plant.

A Venus flytrap can only close and open a few times within its lifetime. It may pique your curiosity to put your finger in—or even see if it can eat other foods like small bits of meat—but unnecessarily triggering the trap will only result in the plant's premature death. If you notice that a trap isn't closing when triggered, it is possible that it has eaten recently, or is running out of energy and nearing the end of its lifetime.

How Do Venus Flytraps Work?

The monster-looking leaf, or trap, has two lobes, each sporting tooth-like spikes (trigger hairs) along the edges that trap insects such as spiders, gnats, houseflies, and ladybugs. The two lobes produce a sweet-smelling nectar that attracts insects.

When an insect lands on a trap and bends one of the trigger hairs, the jaw-like lobes quickly snap shut, claiming the unwitting insect as its victim. Over the next few seconds, the trap gets tighter, making an air-tight seal as it floods the chamber with digestive juices to draw nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorous from the insect
