The works above are from Department of Contemporary Art’s latest group exhibition Degrees, organized with Tampa’s Greater Public Studio. It explores the multiple uses of the word “degrees” including in climate change, education and history. About Degrees from the gallery’s website-
In this exhibition, we unravel the layers of meaning behind ‘Degrees’. From the nuanced shades of truth that shape our perceptions to the tangible degrees of temperature that influence our environment, the exhibition creates a dynamic dialogue between different dimensions of this concept.
Situated in a pivotal battleground state, the exhibition also contemplates the intricate relationship between degrees and the pressing issue of global warming. Delving into the political discourse, we examine how degrees of belief and denial intersect, particularly in the context of climate change debates.
Furthermore, the exhibition prompts contemplation on the notion of an art degree. What does it signify? How does it define one’s creative journey? These questions guide us through an exploration of artistic qualifications and the degrees of expertise they represent.
A journey through art history reveals the connection between degrees and lines, as we delve into the associations between angles, perspectives, and the progression of artistic movements. This collection invites you to ponder how degrees of inclination can shape artistic expression and historical narratives.
Join us in this immersive exhibition, where degrees of interpretation converge, offering a multi-dimensional encounter with the concept of ‘Degrees’.
Tomorrow (10/26/23) from 6-9pm is the last chance to see the show.

WEEKEND ARTINGS: Arts and culture experiences to enjoy with family Thanksgiving weekend
Tumblr media
Thanksgiving weekend is fast approaching. Maybe you already know where you’re taking your out-of-town family members, or maybe you don’t. For those still deciding, here are some of the best last-minute arts and culture experiences you can share with family in Tampa Bay this weekend.
1. Sanding Ovations encore in Treasure Island. When are your aunt and uncle from Alaska ever going to see professionally-sculpted sand if you don’t take them to Sanding Ovations encore on Treasure Island this weekend? Here’s a preview from 10 Tampa Bay.
youtube
2. “The Nature of Art” at The Museum of Fine Arts in St. Pete. There’s a lot to see at the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Pete, especially if you’ve never been there before. If you have been before, this weekend’s a great time to revisit, as the MFA opened “The Nature of Art,” their first campus-wide exhibition, on Oct. 28. I have many things to say about how you should experience “The Nature of Art,” but you’ll have to wait for my Creative Loafing review for those extra words. In the meantime, check out this video snapshot from ABC Action News.
3. “From Far East to Far West” at The James Museum in St. Pete. Given from Far East to Far West’s focus on ancestry, it’s a great show to visit with family. Maybe you’ll learn some of your family’s history in the process. Here’s what I wrote about the exhibit for Creative Loafing.
4. Florida Stories Walking Tours. Celebrate local stories with a “Florida Stories” walking tour of St. Petersburg, Ybor City, Tarpon Springs, or Safety Harbor. The Florida Humanities Council hired local writers to help with the scripts for their self-guided walking tours, accessed through the Florida Humanities Council’s Florida Stories app.
youtube
5. St. Pete Mural Tours. There are still some spots left in Florida CraftArt’s original walking mural tour this Saturday.
And if that fills up, you can always download a map directly from the SHINE website and do your own driving tour.
6. The Clearwater Marine Aquarium promises a “Sea of Holiday Joy” and art this weekend. Get there early Friday morning, 8-10 a.m., and you might catch Santa diving with the dolphins. In addition to the usual marine attractions, CMA offers holiday crafts and activities for kids during “Sea of Holiday Joy” weekends. And thanks to a collaboration with the Morean Arts Center, Level 4 of the CMA Visitor Center hosts a collection of marine-inspired artwork for the next several months.
7. Fairgrounds St. Pete has extended hours this weekend. They’ll be open until 10:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday night. That gives you plenty of time to immerse your out-of-town family members in Florida culture via locally-made art. Locals should know that the Fairgrounds holiday experience, Scents of the Season, doesn’t open until Nov. 30. If you still don’t know what Fairgrounds is, I’m going to refer you to my 2021 Creative Loafing feature where I interviewed the founders before Fairgrounds opened to the public.
8. Impressionism on both sides of the bay. People don’t always agree on art, but everyone loves impressionism. And that’s why “Frontiers of Impressionism” at the Tampa Museum of Art and “Dali and the Impressionists” at The Dali belong on this list of things to do with your family this weekend.
9. Brew culture. We brew a lot of beer in Tampa Bay, and it’s more than good enough to introduce your relatives to. From citrus-forward IPAs to tropical lagers and Florida Weisse styles, Tampa Bay has its own unique beer culture. I like to pick up a few six packs from Crooked Thumb in Safety Harbor before family visits from out of town so they can sip on local flavors during their stay. I have yet to try their beer, but Grindhaus Brew Lab hosts a Holiday Maker's Market with Author Josh Ginsberg this Sunday in Clearwater.
Find a brewery near you using Visit Tampa Bay's Tampa Bay Brewery Map.

Another amazing @countdownimprovfestival. Many thanks to Justin Peters and @kellybmore and the team of volunteers and performers that made these past few days so memorable. It was great to reconnect with old friends, make new ones, and share so many laughs. Also, many thanks to friends who supported and made it possible for me to do three shows during the festival! It was great to perform with my @fstimprov and @bigbangimprov teams and to guest with Hot Mess: The Musical! ❤️ I’ve been lucky enough to witness every iteration of this festival and I can say that this is one of the most fun festivals I’ve been to. Justin and Kelly not only curate a line-up that offers a diversity of styles and voices but they’re also able to put pieces in place that allow for a supportive community to instantly come together and exist for a few days. From the swag boxes to the after parties, all of the details are well thought out and in support of the artists and comedians that are in attendance from all over the country. Great to see everyone again and I’ll see you next year in Ybor City I’d not before. ♥️ 💜 🐓 (at HCC Performing Arts Center Ybor Campus) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChSP2KfOlZm/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Ybor City Arts Tour was last week and was a great way to check out the many spaces currently in the Ybor City area. The Kress Contemporary building with its multiple galleries, artist studios, performance space (The Fringe Theatre), and microcinema, was definitely a highlight.
The above images are of sculptural work by Edgar Sanchez Cumbas (he was also in the Department of Contemporary Art group show in the same building). It is just one of the rotating works you can find while walking around the space.
Below are some selections from the event.

With Nick Carter starting his solo tour in Mexico and South America this week, I thought I would look back at my Nick Carter solo-touring life and why I will always support him.
As anybody can tell you, I’m a Nick girl. While I love all the Backstreet Boys immensely, there has always been a special place for Nick Carter that controls my heart.
Nick Carter on his “Now or Never” tour in Valdosta, Ga. / Photo by Karah
In 2002, when news was really breaking that Nick was doing a solo album, I followed it closely. I remember when clips of the songs snuck online, especially “My Confession.” A clip of “My Confession” got online from some music review website that July 4th weekend and I cried like a baby. See, my website was called “My Confession” at the time.
So when he announced his first solo show at Guavaween in Ybor City (aka Tampa), I was going. I bought tickets the second they went on sale at a, I believe Publix, where the local Ticketmaster was. It was a very warm October day, even for Florida, but I stood in front of the stage for eight hours or more to make sure I was in the very front and I was.
Seeing him perform solo for the first time was something special and is something special that I will always hold close to me. During the show, when he performed “My Confession,” I was singing along with him and if you watch bootleg copies of the show, you can see him ask me “you know the words?” as he was singing the verse. I knew the words. I knew everything. I took three rolls of film at that concert (before digital cameras!).
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
As you can see, the photos aren’t great. I should really rescan them (haven’t in, well, probably since 2002). The lighting there sucked, but that didn’t matter. Nick was amazing.
After that, there were the Christmas shows and I saw a few of those. They were short sets, usually with only about five or six songs, but he killed it every single time. He also took time out to punch inflatable snowmen.

When it was time for his solo tour to start, I can’t tell you how many shows I went to because I honestly lost count. See, I had dropped out of college at the time, severely depressed and so I decided to go to as many concerts as I could. How I afforded that? I have no idea. I really don’t. I wish I had an answer. Concert tickets were cheap then and I remember sleeping in my car a time or two. But I went.
The best one had to be in my hometown of Valdosta on April 5, 2003.

That concert was everything to me. I fought with the guy who booked shows there to book Nick and he did. I ended up with about 6 front row and second-row seats that I split amongst friends and we lived our very best life that night. It was one of the last few shows on the tour, with, I believe, the last two being Orlando and Ft. Lauderdale.
There was just something about seeing him solo back then that gave me this spark. It was my happiness. I have so many more photos that I’ve never scanned that maybe I will someday.
During that time, seeing Nick Carter in concert was my medicine. It was my anti-drug. He was a drug. Some might call it an obsession, (but this is my confession lol) but to me, it’s what kept me sane.
Since then, I’ve seen each of his main tours – “I’m Taking Off,” “Nick and Knight” and “All American.” I haven’t seen them as many times as some have or as many times as I did the “Now or Never” tour, but even now, 15 years later, there’s something about just him being on stage that gives me this boost of excitement.
While I’ve loved every tour he’s done, “Now or Never” will always hold a special place to me. One of my favorite parts of that tour, besides the tour in general, was Nick performing “Just What I Needed” by The Cars. Every single time, I lost my shit. I loved it.
During his soundchecks on the “All American” tour, he asked people online for suggestions of songs he should sing in soundcheck. Before the Nashville shows, I told him “Just What I Needed.”
And he did it. You may hear me lose my shit in Hannah’s video of the performance below.
Having seen him from his first solo show to one of his last in Nashville, Nick as a solo artist has matured and only gotten better with age. He understands the art of a concert and what fans want and meanwhile is the nicest guy alive. In all of my times talking with him, whether at a meet and greet, on a cruise, or alone in a bar, he has never been nothing but great.
So, people sometimes wonder why I support Nick Carter. It’s because at a time when he wasn’t his best self, he had his own troubles, he helped save me from myself, just by being himself.
Personal: Why I will always support @NickCarter’s and his solo work With Nick Carter starting his solo tour in Mexico and South America this week, I thought I would look back at my Nick Carter solo-touring life and why I will always support him.
