About Degrees from the gallery’s website-
In this exhibition, we unravel the layers of meaning behind ‘Degrees’. From the nuanced shades of truth that shape our perceptions to the tangible degrees of temperature that influence our environment, the exhibition creates a dynamic dialogue between different dimensions of this concept.
Situated in a pivotal battleground state, the exhibition also contemplates the intricate relationship between degrees and the pressing issue of global warming. Delving into the political discourse, we examine how degrees of belief and denial intersect, particularly in the context of climate change debates.
Furthermore, the exhibition prompts contemplation on the notion of an art degree. What does it signify? How does it define one’s creative journey? These questions guide us through an exploration of artistic qualifications and the degrees of expertise they represent.
A journey through art history reveals the connection between degrees and lines, as we delve into the associations between angles, perspectives, and the progression of artistic movements. This collection invites you to ponder how degrees of inclination can shape artistic expression and historical narratives.
Join us in this immersive exhibition, where degrees of interpretation converge, offering a multi-dimensional encounter with the concept of ‘Degrees’.
Tomorrow (10/26/23) from 6-9pm is the last chance to see the show.

Student Spotlight: Bruce Dexter
Bruce Dexter is a first-year M.A. student, coming to us from Florida, where he pursued his undergrad degree in Italian studies. He is an active student in the program, attending events, participating in functions, and lending his support to the department and Club Italia. To get to know Bruce a little better, we asked him to tell us about his interest in Italian, what brought him here, and what he is looking forward to during his academic career at CSULB:
1. Tell us a little about your decision to study Italian-how did it happen and what influenced that decision?
My desire is to change my career path. I have spent years in the Business World and am now ready to pursue something I am abundantly passionate about. I have always loved languages and Italian is the most exquisitely beautiful of them all. Italian is amazingly wonderful.
2. There are a multitude of universities that offer Language Arts programs and Literature Studies. Why did you choose Cal State Long Beach for your studies?
Cal State Long Beach is among the greatest of public research institutions. It is preeminent in every discipline that I have researched. Its rankings are extremely high and every College of the University has the highest accreditation in their respective fields. I am extremely excited to be a part of the Beach Community knowing that a graduate degree from CSU will have the weight that gives me the edge among those matriculating from other schools.
3. How have you engaged with the Italian language and culture up to this point?
A native of Miami-Dade Co FL and a Tampa Bay Area resident, I have been fortunate to have been reared in a highly culturally diverse environment. Since childhood, I was exposed to those in our Italian-American communities which comprise Sicilians and Neapolitans. As early as the 1880’s they became a major ethnic component in Tampa’s Ybor City (Similar to New Orleans French Quarter) and the Old West Tampa. Both of these are primary historic districts. I was exposed to Sicilian dialect and Tampa’s own brand of a mixture of Spanish, Italian and English which we call Tampeño or Tampegno. However, Sicilian varieties of Tampegno are starting to die out as the generations pass. I formally learned Standard Italian by obtaining a BA in Italian at the University of South Florida (USF)-Tampa, among my undergraduate degrees.
4. What are you most looking forward to as you move through your academic experience at CSULB and in the RGRLL department?
I look forward to continued refinement of my spoken and written Italian as well as the opportunity to explore contemporary literary trends in the target language. I hope to broaden my exposure by interacting with those who share my passion for Italian and with whom I can network.
5. What is something unique about you that you would like to share?
I used to be a Probation Officer. That is not for me…haha. I am an insurance medical claims analyst with more than a decade of experience with Blue Plans and have a Master's in Business Administration but aspire to be a University Professor. After completing the MA in Italian at CSU I hope to get into a Doctoral program. Ideally, I would like to earn both a PhD in Italian as well as a Doctor of International Business.
Glad to have you here, Bruce!  We look forward to helping you reach your academic goals and can't wait to hear more about Tampegno dialect and its presence in Florida.

There were so many great artists showing work at the group of galleries in the Kress Building in Ybor City, this post needed to be split in two. For part one, on Tempus Projects’ three spaces, head here.
Quaid Gallery is an artist cooperative gallery founded by a group of Tampa artists and is focused on contemporary artists creating mixed media exhibitions. In addition to monthly curatorial projects, they are planning to host events which will include readings, drawing nights and film screenings. Liquid Snow is their current exhibition and included the artwork pictured above by Jessi Sherbet, Mia Makes It, and Mike Cannata.
Parachute Gallery is showing One and Only · يكتا , which centers around the project Green Wedding by Fort Myers, Florida-based Iranian artist, Leila Mesdaghi.
From the website’s description of the project-
In late 2021, Mesdaghi traveled to her childhood home in Tehran, Iran, to throw herself a wedding, sans partner. She writes, “As a child I had dreams about getting married and having a wedding in our house. An Iranian wedding is a heavily glamorized and festive event where the bride is treated like a princess and guests come celebrate and admire her with gold and jewelry. I decided to have a wedding for myself. I made my dress at a high-end fashion boutique, bought a beautiful gold ring with my dad’s money, hired Maryam Saeedpoor (a well-known photographer,) a hair stylist, played Persian wedding music, and had a few friends plus my aunt and uncle as my guests.”
Documentation of the ceremony—a series of six limited-edition portraits by Saeedpoor and a collaborative video piece with director Khashayar Khalilkhani and vocalist Mahboubeh Golzari, reciting a poem by Iranian poet Houshang Ebtehaj about love and longing—beautifully articulates the complex emotions behind the project.
The photos and dress are seen in the image below, along with the work of six regional and national artists whose work ties into this project thematically. These artists are Sharareh Allahyari, Jordan Blankenship, Golbanou Moghaddas, Pottery Boys – Glenn Woods and Keith Herbrand, and Rebecca Stevens.

Tampa artist and photographer Jenny Carey has opened a new space, Gratus, which is currently showing her work. She also had her book, All I See Is Your Glinting: 90 Days in the Pandemic, which she created with Gianna Russo, the inaugural Wordsmith of The City of Tampa, available for sale.

For more of Carey's work and to see what's next for the gallery, check out her Instagram. She also founded Creatives Exchange, a collective of professional women artists in Tampa.
Finally, Department of Contemporary Art Tampa, FL, once a week for three weeks is hosting a mystery local artist. During the event the artist of the evening was revealed as Selena Ferrer. This week on 12/15/22, the last artist will be revealed. Also check out the gallery's Instagram for updates.
