Embracing Values Beyond Genre
Tumblr media
Source: Tina Yamashina on Twitter
As everyone knows, shonen manga is the most popular genre of all manga with seinen coming in 2nd place. There was some discussion about why the shojo and josei genres haven’t become as big as the former with audiences in Japan (and worldwide). A 1-volume manga series called Shojo Manga seems to have quite the answer on why that’s the case, with the panels above.
As translated from RocketNews24,
“Man: “If…if shojo manga really were interesting, wouldn’t more men be reading them?”
Woman: “You’ve got it all wrong. It’s not that men don’t read them because they’re not interesting.”
“Women read shonen manga and seinen manga. Men don’t read josei manga, but not because they aren’t interesting.”
“Men have no problems with women pursuing them while they, the men, hold onto their own values. But they absolutely can’t stand getting closer to a women’s values.”
That last paragraph is intriguing to say the least. As a man, I do feel that there is some truth to this. I love it when women like the same things I like. I welcome them no matter what. Yet I know that the male psyche can get a little insecure if it feels that women pose a threat. Women also do the same to each other.
Here’s the thing - when I’m around other guys who feel inadequate about their own selves as men or take strong pride in being macho, I have felt threatened because I was afraid of the teasing that would happened. When I am by myself, I feel relieved and find female fandom interesting to talk to. I don’t enjoy the pressure of masculinity at times where I think it hurts more than it helps.
Lately I’ve been inspired to use a Final Fantasy IX speedrun route developed by a transgender female streamer based in Germany. She was able to come up with a route without researching other FFIX speedruns. The runner focused a great deal on limiting the amount of menus needed and time spent on them. As any speedrunner will tell you, being able to menu well is a key component of being good at going fast. She has the current World Record for the PC version of the game (as of this writing). I downloaded her notes, loved what I saw, watched a popular FFIX speedrunner gain success with it, and will use them once I get back to playing the game again. If I were around the casual crowd, I would get criticism about why I’m taking advice from a girl and a transgender one at most. I don’t want any part of it.
But what about anime and manga? I don’t know know too many of my female friends that follow shojo or josei much. Some find the shojo cliches to be unrealistic to read or the artwork not amazing. But what about josei? Why is there a lack of interest into the mind of an adult woman going through life’s struggles? I mean, a mangaka like Moyoco Anno has fascinating stories to tell. Maybe it comes down to statements like this.
“I ain’t gonna be a nurse; I don’t have the tolerance for people. I don’t want it to sound bad, but I’ve always seen a woman in the position of a nurse or some kind of health care worker. I see it as more of a woman’s touch.”
That’s from an article about the state of jobs in America where knowledge/soft skill jobs where women excel in are increasing, compared to the traditional blue-collar jobs where men feel comfortable in continue to decrease. It ties into the Shojo Manga statement on women’s values. You don’t mind someone getting success as long they always walk behind you, but not ahead where you have to look to them for advice. You don’t want to look weak.
However, I do think it’s important for men to understand women and see what to learn from their experiences. Their values may differ from one another and they may do things that make you go “Huh?”, but that’s the charm. Women represent the emotional complexity that life brings. They also represent something that’s missing for most people - a sense of community. Women believe in building foundations for groups of people more so than men. One final point I want to make is women provide lessons in listening and not saying anything. I’ve noticed that many men (including myself) rush to solve problems, when we need to sit down, listen, and then go from there in a way that’s more thoughtful. I’m still figuring things out every day as there’s always something new to discover.
I’m not going to say that women should be treated as the holy grail because nobody’s perfect. It takes a mix of all kinds of values from all kinds of life to develop the value that makes someone “mainstream” in the eyes of many.

I think that water colour really flows well with the feeling of “in praise of shadows” because it lends itself to a mistake or unintentional line or texture but urges you to incorporate that’s into an idea. I wanted to capture the feeling of a shadow which can be an extreme blanket of darkness only showing what it wants you to see, where as, it can also just give a light wash over the place that gives it a relaxed and dull feeling.
I love Tina Yamashina’s style of using patterns to compliment her illustrations and give them a dream like effect with softer colours and more pastel colour pallets.
91miyo’s style is a lot more watercolour base to create fluid characters and illustrations which is what I have tried to capture in my work.
Tumblr media
I’ve been using pencils as a kind of way to show shadow effecting the whole environment and a monochromatic feeling is a common theme in bookcovers for this book so I wanted to carry that through to the inside illustrations.
